(my travel companion)
『I love this little book. The author is motivating and the poses are described accurately. However I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner without any yoga experience. It does help when you know the poses. The routines at the end are nice and easy to follow. It's small enough to fit in any bag and doesn't weigh anything when you need to watch the weight (flying).』

(Yoga, tea, soy,&pilates)
『As I was in the "downward-facing dog" yoga position enjoying Oolong tea with a dash of soy contemplating my little pilates workout that I had just completed, I thought, "darn that Erika Dilman, if she hasn't completely changed my "little" life for the better"!
I look forward to her next little book and hope she considers "the little prostate care book" for her next project.』

(Good things come in little packages)
『I have been taking yoga classes for over a year, have several videos and cds. However, I carry this book with me. Whenever I have a wait in an office, I just do a few simple stretches from the book. Some mornings I only have 15 minutes, and I choose a few from each section. The poses are easy to understand, the descriptions are well written. This book is simple, yet powerful.』

(WONDERFUL)
『This book is a great start for a person interested in yoga. The pictures are helpful. The descriptions great. It is a wonderful size for taking to the gym or anywhere. If you are interested in getting into yoga this book would be of great assistance. I have given a couple away as gifts so far.』

(This book inspired me to try yoga! Easy to follow poses)
『I'm taking my first yoga class next week after reading this book!! The author's personal account of using yoga to improve her health is inspiring. What prompted me to explore yoga myself though was her explanation of how it can benefit others, plus her down to earth approach to yoga. She has easy to understand descriptions and depictions of poses and breathing exercises. She also emphasizes that yoga is an activity that can be beneficial upon first attempts but is even more useful if one is patient and practices over time.』
『Appealing to both beginning and intermediate level yoga students alike, this timely little book helps demystify and simplify the practice of yoga with over 40 basic poses and provides a variety of workout combinations that fit anyone's busy schedule, including: -- 7 breathing exercises to relax body and mind -- 10 efficient workouts -- from a 5-minute refresher to a 40-minute intensive -- 15 poses to combat neck strain, backaches, and tight shoulders caused by computer use -- and much more.』
『Perfect for beginners or folks with a bit of yoga experience,The Little Yoga Bookis a perfectly portable antidote to stress. The book is based on a "gentle, flowing yoga" called Hatha yoga. It features poses to undo tension related to computer use, and packs in more than 40 illustrated poses for improving flexibility and stamina, 7 powerful breathing exercises for soothing both your mind and body, and 10 individual workouts, from a quick workplace refresher to an intensive at-home program.

Author Erika Dillman started practicing yoga after being diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome. She was nervous when she went to her first class: "I couldn't shake from my mind the pictures I'd seen in yoga books of gaunt, solemn men, wearing what looked like giant diapers, with one leg wrapped around their necks, and cold, expressionless women in Jack LaLanne-style polyester unitards nonchalantly twisting, bending, and lifting themselves into torturous positions." Dillman successfully dispels myths like these, explaining how she slowly learned that yoga can be an uplifting, individual pursuit, and one that reduced her fatigue, boosted her flexibility, and may very well have saved her sanity. Her awe and respect for the art of yoga is palpable, makingThe Little Yoga Booka big pleasure to read.』

(buying it again two years later - hauntingly good)
『This collection of essays is killer! I'm still smiling thinking about it two years later and picking up another copy to read it again! Gave my original copy to a friend instead of Goodwill where most all other books I am ambivalent about go.

(Achingly funny, powerfully inspiring.)
『I can think of only a few books that have moved me so completely while also triggering repeated, spontaneous eruptions of laughter. It's Dyer's masterpiece and a transcendent read for anyone piecing together the mysteries, longings and abject absurdities of adult life. Can't recommend it more highly.』

(Travels and Trips)
『This is a collection of travel essays and drug-taking reminiscences, presumably autobiographical, covering several years of the author's middle life (they start in 1991) during much of which he seems to have been depressed, in spite of strenuous efforts to have fun.
He writes well, but some of the subjects, such as getting high with flower children on a Thai beach, no longer sound as fresh and original as they must once have. Mystical insights into Mahayana may be great experiences but don't make for entertaining narratives. I thought his best writing was when he described decaying downtown Detroit, surrounding the artificial oasis of the Pontchartaine Hotel,stone-cold sober in the rain.
Such a memoir raises the question of whether illicit drug-taking can be self-treatment for depression. Would he have been better off with Prozac?

(Drug-Induced States Make for Eye-Opening Global Adventures From a Clever Writer)
『I have to admit I picked up this book with the comic title because I heard the author writes of his experiences at the Full Moon Party on Hat Rin Beach in Ko Pha Ngan, Thailand. I have indeed been to this relatively isolated island but not to the infamous festival of alcohol and psychedelic trance music. Luckily, British writer Geoff Dyer has actively partaken fully in all the legendary activities that have made the festival's reputation. But this episode is not the only attraction in this slyly funny, surprisingly introspective travel journal, which glides seamlessly from place to place on a magic carpet of hallucinogenic drugs. With a blessed lack of apology, Dyer chronicles his wide variety of mood swings with mind-bending wit and precise observation. A true drifter, he takes his jaundiced eye, as well as his loneliness, frequent listlessness and pervasive self-dissatisfaction, along with him wherever he goes, but what prevents the book from being an incoherent downer is how he makes his restless nature palpable and often hilarious.

In a collection of eleven short stories, the author takes us to New Orleans, Cambodia, Bali, Paris, Ko Pha Ngan, Rome, Miami, Amsterdam, Libya and Detroit, but he makes a point of ending each chapter with something to leave the reader wanting more. It could be a vivid image or a personalized sensation but never a look-back summary. Whether it's musing about the potential of a racially motivated incident on a Mississippi road trip or the details of a suicide in Miami's South Beach or the lush greenery of Bali's rice paddy fields or the artistry of a one-legged barber in Cambodia, Dyer has a gift for conveying his thoughts in an authentic, descriptive way that does not smack of posturing. It seems only appropriate that he ends his book at the Burning Man festival, the pinnacle of radical, often hedonistic self-expression. There, he sneaks up on a deeper purpose in life with little contrivance. If drug-induced states of alternating euphoria and depression are not your cup of tea, clearly this is not the book for you. Otherwise, I suggest you sit back and enjoy a most intriguing and idiosyncratic travel writer.』

(A collection of LiveJournal entries for lazy, smart adults)
『I read this book while I was in India, and I did not like it at all (the book, not the country). The author's tone made me feel angry. He sounded so lazy and boring. One of his stories in Paris talked about smoking marijuana on a date and walking around downtown. That was the crux of the story - he got stoned in Paris on a first date with a younger girl. That's cool if you are one of my college buddies, but not cool if you're a 40-something author who I paid good money to read.』
『This isn’t a self-help book; it’s a book about how Geoff Dyer could do with a little help. In mordantly funny and thought-provoking prose, the author ofOut of Sheer Ragedescribes a life most of us would love to live—and how that life frustrates and aggravates him.

As he travels from Amsterdam to Cambodia, Rome to Indonesia, Libya to Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert, Dyer flounders about in a sea of grievances, with fleeting moments of transcendental calm his only reward for living in a perpetual state of motion. But even as he recounts his side-splitting misadventures in each of these locales, Dyer is always able to sneak up and surprise you with insight into much more serious matters. Brilliantly riffing off our expectations of external and internal journeys, Dyer welcomes the reader as a companion, a fellow perambulator in search of something and nothing at the same time.』

(As complete a book as I could want!)
『This book is a treasure trove of information. If you want to know everything about yoga and pilates, this is the book for you. This comprehensive collection--a compilation of several books--is profusely illustrated with full-color photos. In some ways, this book reminds me of DK Guides, which are also full of photos and helpful captions.

The only thing that might have made this hefty tome even better would be spiral binding, which would make it a little easier to use while exercising. Still, this is a minor issue completely eclipsed by the usefulness of this guide. This is a book well worth owning!』

『This book is, in my opinion, a modern classic. Students of yoga should be familiar with this book even if Iyengar yoga isn't the tradtion of yoga they adhere to. Tlhis is because the information in the book is foundational and expresses universal principals of yoga philosophy, alignment, and therapeutic uses of yoga poses.』

your teacher's instructions, and very helpful for a new student. There is so much to learn! The photographs of Yogi Iyengar are especially helpful to someone who is new to this amazing type of yoga.』

(Very disturbing)
『I ordered this book based on some good reviews and found it deeply disturbing. In order to articulate my point I will include quotes from the book with my comments in parenthesis:
p. 60 Neurosis is a terrible sickness of the soul .... And is a disgrace to homes (and that would be most people since most of us do have some degree of neurosis)
p. 90 in regards to snake symbolism - "we will be sexually attacked by a woman" (attacked? that must happen really often to men, scary thought for some perhaps but pleasant fantasy for others)
According to the gnostic master hypnotic trances are detrimental (I happen to find them very pleasant and useful)
p. 99 "intellectual beast, intellectual animals" (I guess those are the ones criticizing him)
p 100 "wandering degenerated infrasexual" who might suggest that the astral body can be built without the necessity of the sexual act (ridiculous without needing explanation, plus very unbecoming language for a spiritual "master")
"Those imbecile ignoramuses" (language, pleeease!)
P 100 "What is as abundant as evil weed in this Perverse, Corrupted and Doomed Aryan Civilization are the false hermaphrodites, meaning the homosexuals of Lilith, the gays" (I guess everyone has an opinion on homosexuality but our Aur Weon's has a very destructive edge to it. He cerntainly does not subscribe to the live and let live attitude. It is sad that he feels that he needs to displace his anger on a group of people who are already marginalized and harassed as it is)
P 65 on strawberries: "if we are making strawberry jam, we will have failure in love" (I would interpret it more like preserving love but since a word with loving and loved people would be so much better in my view, please, just make a different kind of jam if you must in your dreams of otherwise, or better yet just buy them in the store)
P60 "the readers of this book must not fall into errors by judging a person because of their dreams or because anything else" "must not slander people" (it seems to me that he could take his own advise)
P 53 "sacred sperm" "spermatic liquor" - don't loose it in sleep (OK, I find this a little grandiose and quite honestly a bit tacky. I also did not see a mention of sacred egg. If sperm was sacred, then quite naturally so should be the eggs released by the ovaries. However, stopping their release is not something that nature intended us to control in order to develop spiritually or else we should all go on birth control pills. So perhaps it is not such a bad thing to dispose of some sperm and egg periodically, unless of course the treasures of the male gender are superior to the ones of the female gender)
P 38 "those people with subjective psyches........are ignorant of their own impotence, nothingness, shamelessness, misadventure, and psychological misery and nakedness" (whoever he is referring to, growth and spiritual development cannot be encouraged by berating and humiliating people. If anything it just crushes the spirit. But I don't think that is a concern for our Samael Aun Weor)

(A short masterpiece)
『This books was created from Master Samael's lectures on the subject of awareness and dream yoga. The book, though short is packed with so much information. Information that you can start 'practicing' as soon as you finish the first chapter. I have been practicing the key SOL for some time now so after reading the first few chapters I put the information to good work and have been able to achieve astral experiences in the short time I have owned the book. The book is good for beginners but they might have to explore some of Samael's other writings and gnostic information in general to get the full 'knowledge' from the writing. Overall straight forward and a great read, also highly recommend the 'Yellow Book' by Weor to compliment the practice of Kundalini Yoga.』

(No word to describe its value)
『This book is for those who want to learn to become awake in the internal worlds.
Follow the exercises and experience for yourself. It will take a lot of practice and patience, and is well worth your effort!

(Simple, Practical, and Possible)
『Dream Yoga is short, simple, and practical. It provides methods that any sincere student and seeker can utilize in order to experience vividly, for themselves, the great reality of the Astral Plane.

I've been familiar with the Astral for a long time. However, I'm really just an exception, because most of humanity still doesn't understand that we exist in many dimensions. We only percieve this three dimensional world with the five senses, even though there is much more. If you look at the snail, you understand that it percieves one-dimensionally through sensations. The dog percieves two-dimensionally. And yet, both these animals exist within the three-dimensional plane. We know this because we have the faculties to proove it. However, these animals don't. This is the same case with higher dimensions, like the Astral Plane. There exist beings who understand that we are like the snail and the dog, without the faculties to percieve higher dimensions.

When human beings dream at night, what really happens is that we leave our physical bodies. Most people aren't aware of this because it takes a certain discipline in order to awaken the Conciousness, in order to live and breathe in those dimensions just as we do here. A person who is awakened is always aware, 24/7. In the day they are like any normal person. They have a job, kids, and a marriage. What makes them exceptional is while the rest of humanity is unconcious of where it goes at night, the awakened individual knows. He has Concious Will. He can study all the Great Mysteries of the Cosmos, speak to Self-Realized Beings, visit wonderful places, etc. (because there are less laws, including the absence of gravity, you can fly to places).

All of this is very possible. Any individual can experience the Astral. It simply takes interest, effort, and discipline. The book Dream Yoga offers such a discipline, including practices that will help one get started. It's also an excellent reference for advanced students.』

(Lucid dreaming)
『This is a good introduction to lucid dreaming/astral projection. The approach given is very similar to Tibetan dream yoga, which is somewhat different from western lucid dreaming. The latter puts a scientific spin on dream travel and consists of induction techniques and self-suggestion exercises. This book, however, presents lucid dreaming in a more spiritual way: as a means of exploring superior worlds in higher dimensions.』
『A collection of chapters and lectures which provides a complete program of study and practice related to the awakening of the consciousness in the Internal Worlds. Every sincere person who practices the techniques included in this book can experience directly for themselves the realities beyond the physical world. Includes, for the first time in English, a complete reference to dream symbols and their meanings as explained by Samael Aun Weor.』

(Extraordinary)
『I was recently diagnosed with advanced osteoporosis. I am 54 with the bones of an 85 year old. I was at first shocked followed by depression, frustration and despair. I bought a stack of books on osteoporosis, all informative and valuable, but it is this one together with Linda Sparrowe's YOGA FOR HEALTHY BONES that gently turned me around, opened my heart, lifted me out of the depth of my depression and inspired me to return to my yoga practice. Jan Maddern in YOGA BUILDS BONES writes with authority and yet with a sensitivity that makes me trust her yoga program and motivates me to help myself heal and strengthen my weakened bones. She has helped heal my fragile heart as well as my fragile bones and I thank her.』

(A treasure)
『This is truly a wonderful book, beautifully and thoughtfully written, with valuable information, excellent exercises, stretches and meditations. It condenses some of the valuable treasures yoga offers in spare, intelligent prose that seem lit from within. I would recommend it for any younger, healthy woman wishing to prevent osteoporosis in later life or looking for a way to balance hormones naturally now.

Someone older and anyone with health problems should definitely show this book to her doctor before plunging in. Many of the poses require a great deal of strength in the upper body and great flexibility.

I gave it only four stars because having just one illustration per exercise or stretch, most of which are multi-stepped, is often not sufficient for a person new to yoga, as I am, to figure out how to do the sequences correctly. Although I read the instructions a number of times before trying each pose, I fear I might do something wrong and inadvertently hurt myself. Still, this isn't insurmountable: I have other books which show many of the poses in more detail, and a video. I think a teacher or a class would be most helpful, too, for anyone planning to buy this book.

All in all, though, it is a great book which will get a lot of use: a real treasure!』

(Yoga, helps your hormones make connections with bone and)
『muscles, to prevent bone loss.

This book is aimed at women; the author is a yoga teacher that specializes with post-menopausal women. Her Mother was diagnosed with osteoporosis. This book is a gem, very well researched and thorough.

The book opens with calcium information, what causes oteoporosis, myths, foods that help and don't, a calcium test and ideas beyond calcium to build bones.

Then 5 routines are shown to build bone and maintain strong bones and develop muscle tone. Five routines cover: Upper body,Lower body, Ovaries, Adrenals, and Parathyroids, Pineal, and Pituitary glands. Parathyroid glands control calcium levels in the blood.

Black and white sketches show the pose, the name, the benefits and instruction, also the focus and sometimes a visualization is given. No equipment is necessary and benefits include more energy, deeper sleep and less stress.

The author encouarges Women to see how YOGA can benefit them in other areas of life. The book ends with a bonus section for menopause symptoms.

I bought this book as a preventive aid, my grandmother had osteoporosis. I don't know if it was her lifestyle or genetics that caused it to develop or both, but why take any chances.』
『Osteoporosis is an enormous concern of women as they enter their 40s and 50s. The success of books like Miriam Nelson's Strong Women, Strong Bones has spread the word that strength training is imperative for good bone density. But many women don't feel comfortable lifting weights in a gym. With the easy 20-minute routines in Yoga Builds Bones, women can not only improve their bone density but also increase their energy and concentration and improve relaxation. And all in the privacy of their own homes! Yoga Builds Bones includes: -- 20-minute routines that include breathing and relaxation exercises -- Information on bone density and calcium -- and why yoga is the absolute best exercise for women as they age -- Original illustrations for each pose that make it easy to follow The revised and expanded menopause symptom relief section includes: -- All new routines for weight gain, hot flashes, mood swings, insomnia, and more -- New section on using yoga to boost libido Yoga Build Bones is a must-have for all women over 40, for younger women interested in preserving their bone density, and for yoga devotees of all ages.』

(The Ultimate Yoga Resource)
『Swami Vivekananda is, without a doubt, the best resource for learning and maintaining a practice in any of the four major yogas. I highly recommend this title as well as his titles on Jnana and Raja yogas as they complement one another beautifully. In Vedic science, and particular, the teaching of yoga, most books written are very complex and often difficult to understand in such a way that one can put the knowledge to use. Not so with Swami Vivekananda. He is direct and easy to comprehend, while at the same time he is passing on profound and useful concepts. His texts are the foundation of my Yoga library.』

(Overestimated?)
『It resulted from lectures about the topics and does not cover the topics deep enough. But although the other yogas from Vivekananda are quite interesting, I was somewhat disappointed with this one. This does not mean, that there would be no good statements in this book, but just not enough of them. Both, karma yogis and bhakti yogis would probaly prefer other books. One may still want to read it, to get a better understanding of Vivekanandas idea of the spiritual path.』

(Love Everybody, Everybody Work.)
『Mountains of hatred can by crushed using this book as a tool. Strong characters can be built using this book as a tool. Explaination of the Karma Yoga is very good. The Ramayana and Mahabharat have been narrated well. But the best part in the book is the explaination of Bhakti and its application in real life. The book teaches you to love Everybody. This book will touch you and question you if you are a bhakt.』

(An eloquent and true voice of loving wisdom.)
『This work remains a clasic and offers within one pair of covers understanding of an effective and proven path to spiritual balance. I have known this work most of my life, as I am the third generation of my family in the United States aware and helped by knowing Vedanta. Rarely have vision, knowledge and clarity of voice been combined with such felicity as in this work, which I place above almost all other works on religion, faith, spirit and spiritual practice. After almost half a century of spiritual seeking, paractice in Christianity, Zen, Eastern faiths, and now my personal daily spirital unfolding of practice of loving kindness and service, I have come to see that the path described by the Swami in this work is one which we all share in fact, if not in name; service to all and to our loved ones IS the highest and easiest and hardest daily practice. I predict that this work will never go out of print, and I am glad that we retain the gift of this and other printed works to aid us all.』
『By Swami Vivekananda,Karma-Yoga and Bhakti-Yogadescribes the way to reach perfection through the performance of daily work in a non-attached spirit (i.e. Karma-Yoga - the path of selfless action) and by sublimating human affection into divine love (i.e. Bhakti-Yoga - the path of divine love).Karma-Yoga and Bhakti-Yoga, along withJnna-YogaandRja-Yoga, are considered classics and outstanding treatises on Hindu philosophy. Swami Vivekananda's deep spiritual insight, fervid eloquence, and broad human sympathy shine forth in these works and offer inspiration to all spiritual seekers.』

(Too Disorganized for Me)
『I'm not a yoga professional. In fact I know very little about yoga at all. What I am is a home schooler who is using a curriculum which recommends Angel Bear Yoga for kindergarteners. So I thought I'd give it a try.

Angel Bear is a wonderful program. I bought the dvd as well, and we adore it. I like their attitude and approach. Although I was concerned about the character building aspect, I needn't have been--its not religious. So I really like the program. However this manual is very badly put together. I tried to use it with my daughter and it was a complete flop. Everything is broken down into sections, so in order to do one lesson you have to find all the different components in all their different places, figure out what order they should go in, and all without losing the attention of a hyper 5 year old. I'm going to try prepping the lessons first, but honestly--how much work would it have been to simply leave them together? Why deconstruct a manual into useless bits?

『[[ASIN:0978906004 Angel Bear Yoga Main Lesson Book- A complete children's yoga program book featuring kid's yoga poses, breathing exercises, nature activities, character building and more! It's Angel Bear Yoga!]
My students look forward to doing our daily yoga lesson. I have used yoga in my classroom for several years, but these lessons tie together character traits and yoga movement. I notice that my students remember the character traits and remind each other of these during the day. The lessons are easy to follow and are well written. At the end of each lesson all those participating feel calm and ready to start our day!! I highly reccomend this book of lessons for anyone wanting to do yoga with children, it is a great book.』

(Angel Bear Main Lesson Book works!)
『We started by using the Main Lesson Book ad found that the kids loved the poses and stories that went along with them. They were engaged and intrigued by it all, and this became an important way for us to connect. Great fun too!』
