(Hearsay accounts of Siddhas)
『I read this book years ago...Having been brought up in Tamil Nadu, with knowledge of Tamil language ,literature and folklore, I can say that this book contains folk-lore stories about the 18 siddhas which most children hear about..there is no historical or factual matter in this...while the siddha tradition of evolving the body through yoga, herbal medicine and other practices exist, the lives of the siddhas given here, as well as that of Agastya are all fictional stories only...Only about Ramalinga Adigal we can say with any confidence since he lived in the 19th century..But he is not one among the 18 siddhas..It is easy to spin stories with a few anecdotes about these siddhas.Ever since'Autobiography of a Yogi' was published by Yogananda, many books have come about telling us about Babaji, only slightly modifying or adding to the account given there....If you want to believe that Babaji and his sister live somewhere in the Himalayas, that he was born as Nagaraja and moved to Sri Lanka and so on,you are free to do so...but the accounts about the 18 suddhas are just folklore accounts in Tamil Nadu!』

(Not worth reading)
『Marshall Govindan of Montreal, Canada credentials are questionable as a Guru, and his books and lessons render many inaccuracies from this ancient tradition.

The Kriya yoga lessons in his Canadian Ashram are not the same original techniques taught by Shyama Charan Lahiri, known best as Sri Lahiri Mahasaya in 'The Autobiography of a Yogi' by Sri Yogananda; and as rendered by other kriya yoga lineages in this tradition since 1861.

Before you embark in the practice of this "secret" Raja Yoga practice from Mr Govinda. Ask yourself the real motives behind his 1991 publications about Babaji's "new" techniques and then use your own judgement based on your study and research.

Since the publication of Autobiography of a Yogi by Sri Paramahamsa Yogananda Giri in 1946, many people have claimed that they had met Mahavatar Babaji and that he supposedly continues revising and sharing new pranayama techniques of kriya Yoga to the World.

Think thrice before spending a cent on this book.

(Enjoyable to read)
『I found this enjoyable to read. If what is written is true I do not know. If it is false I do not know. I do know I enjoyed reading this book and felt good while doing so. I also felt a resonation within to the writing in this book. So to me it is good. I would recommend this book based on what I have written above.』

(An Inspiring book for humanity!)
『This book revels the unlimited potential of human evolution. It shows that the current human development is at its infancy and it is very possible to achieve immortality with the human body.

To prove my point I would like to recommend other inspiring books such as the ''conversations with God series'' by Neale Donald Walsch which clearly states that the human body is designed to exist for eternity. That book also revels that our current physical, spiritual, intellectual and technological development is at its infancy compared to other civilizations in the universe.

There is a striking similarity between these books. M. Govindan has shown that Mahavatar Babaji and the other perfected beings are not myths. In the ''The Complete Conversations with God (Boxed Set)'' series, God has also revealed that a number of human beings had achieved immortality in the physical plane and He made a reference to Babaji as an example!

The main reason that this book as received some negative reviews is because the readers themselves do not believe in their own divinity. Didn't Jesus teach that we are all gods and the kingdom of heaven is within us?

I highly recommend this book for those who wish to improve themselves in their thoughts, words and deeds. This book shows that nothing is impossible to achieve.』

(I recommend it)
『I have enjoyed this book. It speaks about the ancient lore of Yoga. It is only like the tip of the iceberg of a great knowledge. Those who like to know deeply about Yoga will like it.』
『The first authoritative biography of Babaji, the immortal master made famous by Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi, an all-time best-seller. Babaji lives today near Badrinath, in the upper Himalayan mountains. His body has not aged since the age of sixteen, when centuries ago he attained the supreme state of enlightenment and divine transformation. This followed his initiation into scientific art of Kriya Yoga by two deathless masters, the siddhas Agastyar and Boganathar, who belonged to the "18 Siddha Tradition", famous among the Tamil speaking people of southern India. This rare account, by a long time disciple, reveals their little known stories, ancient culture and present mission, as well as how their Kriya Yoga can be used to bring about the integration of the material and spiritual dimensions of life. Clear explanations of the psychophysiological effects of Kriya Yoga and guidelines for its practice are given. It includes verses from the Siddhas' writings with commentary. A book which will inspire you.』

(Excellent)
『This large book on yoga and kriya shows in detail how to do various yoga exercises, breathing excercises, a meditation method called ajapa japa, kriya yoga, and very much else.

It does not seek to indoctrinate anyone, but to present an Indian-based, yogic lifestyle with its claims and demands on your time.

And contrary to other books that sell by their title of "kriya yoga", this one gives you exact kriya methods, in a progressive program. It shows up from the book that there are many kriya yoga techniques, but also a core kriya method: it is a way of breathing that is called ujjayi.

There are others that propagate kriya yoga too, but some tie you for it, tie you to beliefs, guru worship, and tie your future by a harsh oath of unconditional loyalty that purports to extend even for life-times. Self-Realization Fellowship hands out kriya yoga in such a way. If you value the freedom you have got already, here is a better deal - kriya without ties.

The programs in the book are strenuous, but should be attainable by quite supple persons, all in all.

I am glad indeed I got this large (over 950 pages) repository of yoga teachings and methods, and thankful to the publishers too. It is a book I would not miss.』

(This book is not a cosmic joke)
『People who believe this book is a cosmic joke will unfortunately miss out on an unique opportunity here to learn aspects from yoga which were only available from very advanced yoga teachers and gurus. If you could say that there would be a bible on yoga, which I don't think you can, you could say that this is the definite bible on yoga.
When I got the book and looked in it I was surprised and overwhelmed to find so much text in it compared to just a few illustrations. The usual yoga book has lots of photographs with instructions, however these books often miss out on the very essential information to practice yoga not just as a stretch or fitness exercise, which certainly do have benefits. I always knew there was a lot more to yoga than was presented to me and I've been doing different types of yoga for over 20 years.
If you want to get more out of your yoga practice, this is absolutely the book for you. It tells you about all the other aspects of yoga and specifically about kriya yoga.
The book gives an outline to practice yoga and it is suitable for anybody, from beginners to very advanced yoga practicians.Even though is has a lot of text it is a very practical course in yoga and easy to follow. It is very readable and understandable and he gives very down to ground information about the "higher consciousness" aspects of yoga.
I love it and it is worth every penny I paid for it.』

(THIS IS THE ONLY BOOK ON YOGA YOULL EVER NEED)
『If I were to have only ONE book on yoga it would be this. Covers EVERYTHING. Perfect for students and teachers alike. Worth every penny. Its HUGE! I love this book so much. So much information, and I agree with other reviewers. Dont be intimidated.
And please, dont listen to the person who gave this a 1 star saying that some little man in India is laughing all the way to bank...whatever to you, I hope you find peace within yourself. Im sure The Bihar School of Yoga in India is sad for people like you. Im sorry you feel that way and had to publically give a 1 star without even reading the book Im SURE. All proceeds from all BSOY go back to the ashrams, schools and to other charitable causes!
This book is a treasure that I carry like a BIBLE!
JAI Swami Satyananda, JAI SIVANANDA! Om Namah Sivaya!』

(If you only read one book about yoga in your life.)
『This book is very complete, and yet doesn't focus on the extreme aspects that make so many people think that they 'can't do yoga'. You -can- do yoga, without being a "circus performer", (as is mentioned in the book). As there is no unecessary physical extreme here, there is also no judgement of motive: You want to do yoga / you have your reasons / yoga is good / any motives to do yoga are good motives. Teaching by good example, rather than rules; inspirational.』

(Cosmic joke)
『If you paid $80 for this book, somewhere in India a stout little man in orange is laughing all the way to the bank.』
『Yoga is not an ancient myth buried in oblivion. It is the most valuable inheritance of the present. It is the essential need of today and the culture of tomorrow. Swami Sivananda Sarswati. This book is the most comprehensive text ever published on yoga. It contains a complete course of 36 structured lessons on all the practices of integral yoga. The lessons were compiled from the teachings given by Swami Satyananda Saraswati and are useful as a practical and theoretical guide for all levels of yoga teachers and aspirants. The book presents a synthesis of yoga in a scientific and systematic manner. The different branches of hatha yoga, mantra yoga, karma yoga, bhakti yoga, jnana yoga and kriya yoga are progressively introduced with special emphasis on practice, theory and application in daily life. Includes line drawings, diagrams and colour plates. The depth of knowledge this book contains provides the link between you,the practitoner of yoga and an experienced guide and teacher. This link is your sadhana(spiritual practice),the beginning of your inner transformation, spiritual awakening and realization of higher ideals in life. The techniques covered in this book have their basis in the ancient vedic (tantric and yogic) shastras and were handed over the centuries from guru to disciple. Now in an age when travel and communication have become almost instantaneous affairs and there are more efficient methods of disseminating wisdom than the human voice and ear,we wish to offer these transcendatal instruments of grace to all who have eyes to read and ears to hear.』

(Yoga for the hips and shoulders review)
『The book thoroughly outlines exercises to support the hips and shoulders. The only challenge is that I did not receive the instructional video. Any way to get that resent?

『In all my years of teaching therapeutic Yoga, the two most common physical limitations I have seen are in the shoulders and hips. Even for people with back, neck or knee pain - if they are able to improve the functioning of their shoulders and hips, their back or neck pain becomes much more manageable or even resolved. I've designed and laid out the yoga exercises from simple to complex. As you develop awareness in the simple exercises, you'll gain ease of motion, stability and strength, which you can then take into the more complex exercises to further enhance your awareness, ease, balance and freedom』

(Great Book)
『This is a great book on introduction and overview of Yoga. It covers postures, breathing exercises, tantra, and meditation. It also covers a bit about the different chakras, although this is only an overview and not detailed explanation. Overall this is a very good book.』

(If you only get 1 yoga book, make it this one!!!)
『This is a fantastic yoga book! It covers many different subjects relating to your Yoga practice from introductions to different types of yogic traditions to breathing, meditation, and actual yoga postures and routines. There is a section on Hatha Yoga cleansing techniques and even eye yoga. Swami Janakananda also discusses the chakras and kundalini. The last section really gets into meditation and how yoga can fit into your daily life.

Out of all the instructional yoga books I've seen this is by far the best! This is a very comprehensive book and I continually pick it up a read different sections.

Swami Janakanada is the founder of the Scandinanvian Yoga and Meditation School and you can read more about him at http://www.scand-yoga.org/english/om/janakananda.html.

Swami Janakananda also has a lovely CD out for the practice of Yoga Nidra which I highly recommend. Please see my other reviews on Amazon for more information. Namaste'』

(One of the Best)
『This was neither my first Yoga book, nor my last, but it is probably my favorite. It is a comprehensive introduction to kundalini yoga, and covers basic asanas, pranayama, and various meditation and concentration techniques. It is a very practical book, written in a clear, direct style. Swami J. offers his instruction without necessarily advocating a radical change in lifestyle (e.g., vegetarianism is not required). If I could keep only one yoga book, this would probably be the one. It presents more than enough information and exercises to keep one working for years and years.』

(Yoga Chick - A Hip Guide to Everything Om)
『My neice and I LOVED this book. It gave us something to work on together besides arguing about the messy state of her bedroom and how often she gets to drive my car. Besides the poses, which were challenging and fun, we especially loved the section called "Going with the Yoga Flow." We didn't feel overwhelmed, which we sometimes have when looking at some other yoga books. Doing the practices is great "us" time.』

『I'm suprised only one review of such a well informed and contrivesial book. Perhaps a truthfull telling does not fufill the human need to be part of a great story stretching back milenia instead of a few hundred years? Regadless, the truth always liberates, and ultimatly, isn't that whay yoga is all about? Read this book and you will have to question wether to judge the power of asana from your experiance or an illusion of its antiquity.』

(Blowing off the Dust)
『The Yoga Tradition of the Mysore Palace

Author: N. E. Sjoman

The Yoga Tradition of the Mysore Palace has just come out in its second edition with some minor corrections and a new preface. It is an extraordinary book in the breadth of research that informs it. The book presents strikingly original conclusions on a subject where most insights have been doctored to fulfill the faith in its various forms or keep up with the advertising extravaganza.

The book traces not the history but the development of the yoga schools that have flowered with B. K. S. Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois and T. Krishnamacariar. It goes back further into the history of yoga reclaiming the practise history as the main authority, as opposed to the academic history.

Sjoman examines the academic history from the point of view of the "practise history" which requires re-evaluating and reclaiming it from both Sanskrit commentators and Western academics. His interpretation of the sutra of Patanjali from the perspective of yoga practitioners is especially welcome.

This approach makes more sense than the academic interpretations. The story elaborated here is supplemented by philosophical and textual arguments by Indian scholars and pandits too often neglected in Western scholastics, and by unique insights into those traditions that could only be given by someone immersed in the tradition.

The history of the Mysore Palace School gives us an insight into how the yoga system which is foremost in the whole world today has come into being. The history reveals not just the "material moments" as such, but the ideas that were part of what went into the formation of modern yoga today. The book examines how contemporary yoga practise is shaping yoga, and the vital factors that give it social context.

The core of the book is a translation of a text from the 1800s from the private library of the Mysore palace which is the only textual documentation of an extended asana practise - asanas being the yoga positions that form the core of yoga practise today.

The translation of this text from Sanskrit in Kannada script is supplemented with notes and appendices relating the asanas to earlier references and later practise. This text is helpful in establishing a dynamic tradition of how the groups of asanas came about.

The book is written with a rare scholarly acumen and humor. It is not a "how to" or "save the world" book but a deeper and more sustained insight into the transition of the practises of yoga from a spiritual discipline carried on by ascetics in solitude to a modern world mass marketing phenomenon. The learning and research that has gone into this book is not generally accessible. The insight it provides should be welcome to any serious student of yoga. A complex and learned assessment of the whole yoga tradition, this book will claim its rightful place on the shelves of scholars all over the world as the first actual history of yoga. ======================================』
『This book traces the developmental years of the Ashtanga Yoga tradition of K. Pattabhi Jois as well as the Iyengar system through exploration of the early years at the Mysore Palace. I also depicts an ancient text called: SRITATTVANIDHI. It is recommended for anyone wishing to understand more about the formative years of two of the worlds most popular and dynamic teachers: K. Pattabhi Jois and BKS Iyengar as well as their teacher: Krishnamacharya of Mysore.』

(a Great Companion CD)
『The CD is best for extending the lessons from the Main Lesson Book or Card Deck. My three year old seems to imagine she's right there with Angel Bear and Sweet Pea, and she's very creative in answering questions about the stories.

Although the Angel Bear Yoga program does not use traditional names for poses et cetera, it's theme of positive character traits really has young children interested. My daughter LOVES it, and she talks about all of the traits and poses she learns with everyone in the family. She likes to "define" them as well. I think it empowers her as well as fostering creativity, relaxation, and appreciation of nature.』

(Review of the CD)
『I don't know why all the other reviews here seem to be for the card deck, not the CD. I posted my review of the cards with the cards.

I think this CD has some great visualization exercises, but they're probably better for 6 year olds and up, unless you're a preschool teacher who is familiar with all the Angel Bear resources. I bought this for use at home with my three year old and her attention span isn't mature enough for this, and neither is her vocabulary advanced enough to understand words like "abundance," "compassion," "integrity," etc.』

『\Seekers interested in searches for truth and Hindu spirituality will find an excellent guide in THE YOGA OF TRUTH, which uses a series of easy introspective questions to help penetrate the ego's barriers to understanding. THE YOGA OF TRUTH analyzes the steps to realization and higher consciousness, considering illusions and obstacles of ego and self. New age collections will find this engrossing.

Diane C. Donovan
California Bookwatch』

『A guide to Jnana Yoga--the Way of Silent Knowledge--by direct contemplation of the Unchangeable

• Shows that everything in one’s body, personality, thoughts, memories, and experiences has form and is changeable and, thus, is neither essential nor eternal

• Identifies the witnessing consciousness within--all that remains when the ephemeral is eliminated--as the real Self, the one and only unchanging eternal Being

InThe Yoga of Truth, Peter Marchand, through a series of deceptively simple introspective questions, leads the seeker into discarding everything--body, personality, thoughts, memories, experiences--that disguises the ego’s relentless masquerade as the Self. This form of contemplation, with its constant commitment to witnessing without attachment, disempowers the ego’s fixation on its products, leading instead to the realization that the witnessing consciousness is, in fact, the one immutable Being within or without--the real Self, the true You.

The universal illusion rests upon space and time, body and elements, the life force, mind, intellect, ego, and Self. Jnana Yoga reveals not only the insubstantial and illusory nature of our presumptions but also our habitual commitment to the illusion of being an individual that they create. This illusion collapses like a house of cards before direct inspection. When something has form, when it can change, it cannot be the eternal with which we seek union. Witnessing consciousness stands alone as that which is without form. InThe Yoga of Truth, Marchand leads us simply, and compellingly, to the truth of our nature and the peaceful bliss of true Being.』

(Not a lot new here, but worth hearing)
『I was a little let down by this CD. I am a fan of other things Stephen Cope has done and was expecting to be really excited by this. But there is nothing new here and it seems much more surface level than his other works (perhaps it is the spoken vs. written, but I find people like Pema Chodrun and Jack Kornfield very compelling on audio). This would make a nice introduction for someone who really has not spent much time on yoga/meditation, but is probably not for people who have read Cope's work.』

(Awesome!)
『I love this CD set. I haven't listened to the first CD yet as I just received it yesterday and went straight to the second CD which has the exercises on it. Stephen has such a nice calming voice and I was extremely relaxed after listening to it. I love how he keeps you focused on the "feeling" aspect with no judgment. Very highly recommended!』

(Very useful exercises along with a simple introduction to a yoga worldview)
『This set consists of two CDs. The first CD provides a simplified introduction to yoga thought and covers concepts such as duality, interdependence and the distinction between feeling an emotion and acting out. It also talks about the development of witness consciousness, introduces the concept of an energy body and talks about how this is related to working with emotions. The first CD also briefly discusses yoga as a physical practice and an overall life philosophy. It's a good introduction for those who know very little about yoga, but have some real curiosity about the very basic concepts.

The second CD is where the real value of this set comes in. Disc TWO begins with an exercise called the daily body scan which puts one in touch with the sensations that are occurring in the body. Since emotions are related to what is occurring in the body and awareness of changes in these sensations, the overall effect is to heighten awareness of emotions as they are expressed or held in the body.

The second exercise on this CD talks about riding an emotion as a surfer would ride a wave. It builds on exercise 1 and helps the individual to disidentify with their emotion it while fully feeling it. This causes a felt shift and perhaps a healing transformation. This often happens in therapy, so this is not exactly a foreign concept.

I particularly like the third exercise on this CD which you do before you fall asleep. It is similar to exercise 2, but it brings in the events of the day and has a very relaxing phase that quiets the nervous system through deep and relaxed breathing. Physiologically, by extending the exhalation by relaxing the abdomen and avoiding chest breathing, the parasympathetic branch (calming) of the nervous system is activated. If you don't like deep explanations, then all I can say is it will help you with problems with insomnia.

If you are interested in working with emotions in this way and would like to read further, I suggest THE POWER OF FOCUSING and/or FOCUSING and Tara Bennet-Goleman's excellent book EMOTIONAL ALCHEMY. For a truly great and comprehensive introduction to yoga, I highly recommend THE YOGA TRADITION by Georg Feurenstein. If I could rate this book a 6 I would and it is a tremendous bargain at under $30.00.』

(Hypnotic)
『My husband and I used this regulary for a few months, and we both saw dramatic differences in how we handle and approach life. It came at just the right time to help me move my yoga practice "off the mat." Stephen Cope's technique is amazing: his voice, words, attitude, intent are all set at just the right level to provide a deeply accepting posture. In many ways it is the best self-hypnosis device I've ever found. I can't say enough positive things about Yoga for Emotional Flow!』

(A Must Have in Any Yoga Library)
『For anyone interested in a totally accesible guided meditation, the first CD provides a step by step methodology which is easy for any beginner and valuable for seasoned pracititioners. The verbal cues are perfect, the tone is soothing, the infomation is clear and spot on. I have given this CD set a gifts to friends going through difficult times, chemotherapy, separations, as well as to people new to yoga. Once you listen to this, you will want to share it!』
『More than 4,000 years ago, the early masters of yoga made an astonishing discovery: before we can find true happiness, we must first learn how to be open to the energy of our emotions. On Yoga for Emotional Flow, Stephen Cope, psychotherapist and Senior Scholar-in-Residence at Kripalu, the largest yoga center in America, presents a life-changing strategy for "riding the wave" in even the most challenging emotional situation.

Cope details the psychology behind the difficult circumstances we create for ourselves through improper handling of our feelings, and shares the prescription for effectively relating to anger, fear, grief, joy, and others from a yogic point of view. Through breathing and visualization techniques used successfully by thousands of his students, Cope offers listeners practical tips for day-to-day emotional balance; lessons in awakening the "witness consciousness"– a nonjudgmental vantage point for welcoming emotions; steps for "clearing the field" at the end of each day, and more.

For the yogi, there are no "bad" feelings– only unskillful responses to our ever-changing emotional states. Yoga for Emotional Flow is an essential program for working with these powerful forces, and a template for a new way of being.』
