She even shows how to modify "Downward Facing Dog" so that now I can do it. Gardening and yoga do go together and this is the only book I have found that combines the two. The illustrations are outstandingly beautiful. If this author wrote another yoga book for the very beginner, I would buy it. I will also look for books with the same illustrator. This is not for someone who regularyly practices yoga - It is for somone who wants to incorporate yoga into their life but they are not flexible enough for a beginner tape. It is also a routine in short segments. I want to get outside to "play" not spend an hour missing a sunny morning. This book has moves to do before you go outside, moves during your gardening and moves after. THANK YOU VERONICA FOR THIS LOVELY BOOK! ---Peggy 』 『
Gardening is considered a contemplative, gentle pastime, but it makes many demands on the human body. The 21 yoga positions in this colorful guide are intended to energize gardeners so they can enjoy planting, mulching, digging, and harvesting without the aching back and sore knees. The first section,“Breaking Ground,” emphasizes warming up the spine and gently engaging the hips, back, and neck. Section two, “Planting Seeds,” focuses on standing and balancing poses. The last section, “Harvest,” covers relaxation, elongating tired muscles, and refocusing the spirit. Yoga balances thecentral nervous system, tones and cleanses the internal organs, strengthens the circulatory system, and promotes an overall sense of well-being and contentment. This guide draws on that ancient discipline to transform taxing activities — from crawling between rows to weed and squatting for hours to plant seedlings to digging out new beds and watering — into rituals of rejuvenation for mind, body, and spirit.

Sure the concept of partner yoga has been presented before, But not like this. Here, the `practice' transcends to communal ceremony...as playful as you like, yet leading to sensitive, divine connection. And, it's not limited to asanas ....All maya koshas are honored: (physical/breath/ mental-emotional/ intuitive/and bliss bodies). And, I really like the descriptions of the chakras and using mudras with a partner (so creative and original). ALSO, The photos are gorgeous! The author's writing is as eloquent and inspired as the quotes! (a `non-yoga' friend wants the book just to `look at' ) However, it also works on the practical level: guiding you through developing and varying your very own practice...gentle or more challenging. I believe this practice is possible for any two people. I've tried it with partners not my size or degree of flexibility; just use that open mind and a blanket to adjust height. Your reward will be `Namaste' experienced throughout the practice!』
(A beautiful, heartfelt celebration of partner yoga) 『This book is a real gift for those of us who love yoga! The positions are really original and innovative, as well as gorgeous to look at. The author encourages her readers to let go of perfection and to embrace connection instead. The postures are a nice blend of both the practical and the spiritual, as well as both the simple and the more challenging. I love the chapter on Mudras (symbolic hand gestures). I've never seen examples of partnered mudras before and they are just beautiful. The photographs are amazing as well - you just want to keep this book nearby so you can look at it regularly for inspiration. I plan to give this to friends as gifts - it's really special.』 『
Share the joys of yoga—and increase the benefits. The familiar postures of Hatha Yoga have renewed power and effectiveness when partners work together. Though all the asanas are touched upon, this comprehensive holistic program charts new ground in looking at a joint practice. There are creative interpretations for twoof yogic breathing, symbolic hand gestures, mantras, and vinyasas—those special, flowing sequences of poses. For a restorative and healing workout, one person goes into repose while the other applies leans, stretches, twists, and compressions. Special advice on the art of partnering reveals how to create a positive, safe, and nurturing environment. In all the exchanges, the mutual support helps both people work better and improve alignment. Special black and white symbols representing each partner make directions easy to follow.

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Excellent) 『This large book on yoga and kriya shows in detail how to do various yoga exercises, breathing excercises, a meditation method called ajapa japa, kriya yoga, and very much else.
It does not seek to indoctrinate anyone, but to present an Indian-based, yogic lifestyle with its claims and demands on your time.
And contrary to other books that sell by their title of "kriya yoga", this one gives you exact kriya methods, in a progressive program. It shows up from the book that there are many kriya yoga techniques, but also a core kriya method: it is a way of breathing that is called ujjayi.
There are others that propagate kriya yoga too, but some tie you for it, tie you to beliefs, guru worship, and tie your future by a harsh oath of unconditional loyalty that purports to extend even for life-times. Self-Realization Fellowship hands out kriya yoga in such a way. If you value the freedom you have got already, here is a better deal - kriya without ties.
The programs in the book are strenuous, but should be attainable by quite supple persons, all in all.
I am glad indeed I got this large (over 950 pages) repository of yoga teachings and methods, and thankful to the publishers too. It is a book I would not miss.』
(This book is not a cosmic joke) 『People who believe this book is a cosmic joke will unfortunately miss out on an unique opportunity here to learn aspects from yoga which were only available from very advanced yoga teachers and gurus. If you could say that there would be a bible on yoga, which I don't think you can, you could say that this is the definite bible on yoga. When I got the book and looked in it I was surprised and overwhelmed to find so much text in it compared to just a few illustrations. The usual yoga book has lots of photographs with instructions, however these books often miss out on the very essential information to practice yoga not just as a stretch or fitness exercise, which certainly do have benefits. I always knew there was a lot more to yoga than was presented to me and I've been doing different types of yoga for over 20 years. If you want to get more out of your yoga practice, this is absolutely the book for you. It tells you about all the other aspects of yoga and specifically about kriya yoga. The book gives an outline to practice yoga and it is suitable for anybody, from beginners to very advanced yoga practicians.Even though is has a lot of text it is a very practical course in yoga and easy to follow. It is very readable and understandable and he gives very down to ground information about the "higher consciousness" aspects of yoga. I love it and it is worth every penny I paid for it.』
(THIS IS THE ONLY BOOK ON YOGA YOULL EVER NEED) 『If I were to have only ONE book on yoga it would be this. Covers EVERYTHING. Perfect for students and teachers alike. Worth every penny. Its HUGE! I love this book so much. So much information, and I agree with other reviewers. Dont be intimidated. And please, dont listen to the person who gave this a 1 star saying that some little man in India is laughing all the way to bank...whatever to you, I hope you find peace within yourself. Im sure The Bihar School of Yoga in India is sad for people like you. Im sorry you feel that way and had to publically give a 1 star without even reading the book Im SURE. All proceeds from all BSOY go back to the ashrams, schools and to other charitable causes! This book is a treasure that I carry like a BIBLE! JAI Swami Satyananda, JAI SIVANANDA! Om Namah Sivaya!』
(If you only read one book about yoga in your life.) 『This book is very complete, and yet doesn't focus on the extreme aspects that make so many people think that they 'can't do yoga'. You -can- do yoga, without being a "circus performer", (as is mentioned in the book). As there is no unecessary physical extreme here, there is also no judgement of motive: You want to do yoga / you have your reasons / yoga is good / any motives to do yoga are good motives. Teaching by good example, rather than rules; inspirational.』
(Cosmic joke) 『If you paid $80 for this book, somewhere in India a stout little man in orange is laughing all the way to the bank.』 『Yoga is not an ancient myth buried in oblivion. It is the most valuable inheritance of the present. It is the essential need of today and the culture of tomorrow. The lessons were compiled from the teachings given by Swami Satyananda Saraswati and are useful as a practical and theoretical guide for all levels of yoga teachers and aspirants. The book presents a synthesis of yoga in a scientific and systematic manner. The different branches of hatha yoga, mantra yoga, karma yoga, bhakti yoga, jnana yoga and kriya yoga are progressively introduced with special emphasis on practice, theory and application in daily life. Includes line drawings, diagrams and colour plates. The depth of knowledge this book contains provides the link between you,the practitoner of yoga and an experienced guide and teacher. This link is your sadhana(spiritual practice),the beginning of your inner transformation, spiritual awakening and realization of higher ideals in life. The writer is a SadGuru Sadhananda from Yogi Lahiri Mahasaya's unbroken chain of Guru. (Lahiri Mahasaya is Swami Yogananda's Guru's Guru).
It is recommended for those who have developed deep interest in the subject. I have found no other contemporary book that goes into so much details.

(Kriya Yoga Esoteric Yoga Revealed!) 『Though I might understand where the several negative reviewers are coming from, regarding the English translation and the lack of detailed instructions in the involved esoteric yogic practices, nevertheless this is the first time that the mysterious practices of Kriya Yoga are finally explained. To the intermediate and advanced "student" of esoteric yogic practices, this book fills in a number of otherwise missing pieces of yogic information on practices. So that with some understanding of kundalini yogic and meditative practices already established, this book will lead you yet further in your quest for full transformation. I highly recommend this book.』
(A companion to the shiva samhita and yoga sutras of patanjali?) 『This book reads very much like the other available yoga sutras, but the twist is that they speak to the reader in a more modern setting.
The 4 kriya yoga initiations are not exactly like those in the SRF teachings, and both are different somewhat from the methods available online at http://www.kriyayoga.com/ (which seem to be a mixture of the SRF methods and the pranayama technique in the book using the mantra Aum).
The instructions for Kriya yoga pranayama (Step 1) more or less vaguely remind me of the methods in Aleister Crowley's "Liber HHH" as they are designed to bring about identical effects in the practioner, and the asana/pranayama are slightly similar.
The book itself is a real delight, there are many color photos and paintings in the introduction. It has a bright orange ribbon and the pages are thick heavy paper.
The message presented in the text is fairly clear and easy reading for anyone who has studied (or applied) eastern spiritual texts before.
I have to subtract one star due to the author's habit of leaning the text to an intellectual level repeatedly.
By all means, buy this book if you are interested in kriya yoga. The author comes from a direct lineage but you may find this benefit to be somewhat detrimental as some sections read drying. People in India think differently than Americans and to bridge this you have to look at the work with the mystic's mindset of not immediately understanding everything but continuing through anyway. Some words in Hindi and Sanskrit simply do not have good English equivalents so they left them in the original languages, which then have to be pondered over to grasp the meaning of.』
(A good book) 『The book is well written. It does describe the Kriya technique in general but it is not exactly the same as taught by SRF. It will be very hard for a person who has not practiced either yoga or meditation to understand this book. The author does know of the subject matter of which he writes. To the author I say thank you for producing this book.』
(A must buy for all sincere yogis) 『This is a book about the general description of kriya yoga by Swami Sadhanananda, a disciple of Swami Bhabananda Giri. The work is translated by Dr. Kalyan Bhattacharyea.
Firstly, I must warn the potential buyer that the English used in this book contains some grammatical mistakes. However, the translator acknowledges these mistakes with humility at the beginning of the book. If the reader does not mind these minor grammar errors, this book is highly recommended to all sincere seekers of God.
The actual technique of ALL the levels of Kriya yoga is actually revealed to the public. So far, as I am concerned, this is the ONLY book which does this. However, it must be pointed out that the techniques are revealed in a general manner and if one wants to learn these techniques in a detailed manner, they should write to Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF). Followers of other religions (especially Islam) would find that by practicing these techniques, it would actually complement their religious beliefs and lifestyle. For example, towards the end of the book, the author gives the reader a detailed explanation of performing the ZIKAR, which is a method of sadhana. The author states (by giving a detailed explanation) that zikar is a type of pranayama which aids the devotee in reaching Allah. Christianity and Buddhism is also given attention here as well.
In conclusion, I would highly recommend this book to all sincere seekers of the spiritual path. Whether one is a Muslim, Hindu, Christian or followers of other faiths, this book presents the reader with an overwhelming feeling of unity between all the different religions of this world, through the practice of kriya yoga.
』 『Kriya Yoga– Its Mystery&Performing Art, written by Swami Sadhanananda Giri is described by many of its readers as the Kriyayoga Samhita or the Holy book of Kriyayoga. The luminous words of this inspiring&empowering title are pregnant with spiritual wisdom, which has changed the lives in hundreds of its readers exposing the proper practice of Kriya as originally taught by Yogiraj Sri Sri Lahiri Mahasaya. It is highly recommended as a follow-up of the classic– “Autobiobraphy of A Yogi” written by Paramahansa Yogananda. Paramahansa Yoganandaji’s luminous words in “Autobiobraphy of a Yogi” have inspired millions of people across the world to taste the innermost essence, the nectar of Kriyayoga. But even with such huge number of followers, anideal&authentic text book of Kriyayoga with both theoretical&practical details is in demand. The secret behind the success of the above title in reorienting its readers’ outlook&lifestyle in general is nothing but translation of the divine powers of its author into its contents. The present title with its inspiring&empowering words is a gift to the mankind from another Sadguru– Swami Sadhanananda Giri – from the same lineage. It is a printed shape of his realizations emanating from highest level of spiritual wisdom. Kriyayoga is a novel science comprising of all the best techniques available in different traditional oriental systems of yoga for control of the innate breathing exercise or Pranayama. Yoga – in its totality – prepares the mind as well as the body for the ultimate goal of life – association&assimilation of the individual consciousness with the Supreme Consciousness. The path described for such a marvelous journey is same, simple&secret in every religion– control of the senses&concentration of the mental faculty through control over the respiratory process. Kriyayoga is mentioned in the ancient renowned philosophy of the great sage Patanjali, as a mean for communication with the Absolute by way of certain significant practices– intensely secret. Our revered Sri Sri Lahiribaba revived that sacred tradition&presented to us as the most advanced, up-to-date way of spiritual practice– suitable for both the familymen&renunciants, for any human soul beyond any barrier of religion, caste, age, sex or nationality. As in every art, practice of Kriyayoga too has to be performed under the supervision of an able Master– a self-realised Guru ‘in living’, who himself has crossed all the stages of yogic sublimity. He is the sole origin&medium of transfer of spiritual energy to an obliged&obeisant disciple. Only He holds the key to self-realisation for the disciple. The insurmountable restlessness of human mind has to be focused in the way taught&tutored by the Guru. Any attempt to sail alone in spiritual practice is totally prohibited. Swami Sadhanananda Giri descends from a sacred Guruparampara, the traditional Indian lineage of Guru. Through this masterpiece he wishes to provide every spiritual practitioner in the path of Kriyayoga a‘practical guide’, to satiate his inquisitiveness, for an insight into the knowledge necessary to allay all misgivings&also to help him appreciate his journey through newer stages of spiritual upliftment during sadhana.』

(very inspiring read) 『Mr. Iyengar writes so anyone can understand and brings humor to complex subjects. The book has helped me deepen my yoga practice immensely. I completely recommend to anyone, especially those choosing to follow the yogic path.』
(Yoga philosopy 101) 『This is a surprisingly accessible overview of yoga and levels of practice. It is not a "how to" manual, but rather a "why to" manual with insights for the beginner as well as the experienced.』
(A book telling of a journey) 『I thought this was quite an interesting book of life--the life of B.Y.S. Iyengar. Recommended for those who are real curious.』 『
B.K.S. Iyengar—hailed as "the Michelangelo of yoga" (BBC) and considered by many to be the most important living yoga master—has spent much of his life introducing the modern world to the ancient practice of yoga. Yoga’s popularity is soaring, but its widespread acceptance as an exercise for physical fitness and the recognition of its health benefits have not been matched by an understanding of the emotional, intellectual, and spiritual development that the yogic tradition can also offer. InLight on Life, B.K.S. Iyengar brings readers this new and more complete understanding of the yogic journey. Written with the depth of this sage’s great wisdom, Light on Life is the culmination of a master’s spiritual genius, a treasured companion to his seminal Light on Yoga.
』 『If this book is to lay any claim to authenticity, it must make one point clear above all others. It is this: By persistent and sustained practice, anyone and everyone can make the yoga journey and reach the goal of illumination and freedom. Krishna, Buddha, and Jesus lie in the hearts of all. They are not film stars, mere idols of adulation. They are great inspirational figures whose example is there to be followed. They act as our role models today. Just as they reached Self-Realization, so may we.
Many of you may worry that you are unable to meet the challenges that lie ahead. I want to assure you that you can. I am a man who started from nowhere; I was heavily disadvantaged in many ways. After much time and effort, I began to reach somewhere. I literally emerged from darkness to light, from mortal sickness to health, from crude ignorance to immersion in the ocean of knowledge by one means alone, namely by zealous persistence in the art and science of yoga practice (sadhana). What held good for me will hold good for you too. Today you also have the benefit of many gifted yoga teachers.
When I began yoga, there was, I am sorry to say, no wise, kind teacher to lead me. In fact my own Guru refused to answer any of my innocent inquiries on yoga. He did not instruct me as I do my students, offering them step-by-step guidance in an asana. He would simply demand a posture and leave it to me or his other students to figure out how it could be realized. Perhaps that stimulated some stubborn aspect of my nature, which allied to unshakable faith in the subject of yoga made me burn to go on. I am ardent and passionate, and maybe I needed to show the world that I was not worthless. But far more than that, I wanted to find out who I was. I wanted to understand this mysterious and marvelous "yoga," which could reveal to us our innermost secrets, as equally as it revealed those of the universe around us and our place in it as joyful, suffering, puzzled human beings. Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Great DIY book, especially for beginners) 『This is an excellent starter, with helpful pictures, clear instructions, and lots of great suggested "routines." It's especially helpful that the book is large has a spiral-bound spine so the pages stay open. You can have it at your side as a reference while you do the poses.』
(best yoga book) 『This book is an excellent source for creating your own yoga program. It has great descriptive pictures and good routines. It doesn't replace a beginner taking a class from a good instructor (no book can do this), but it is a good source for follow-up exercise on your own.』
(Good, solid information) 『This is an excellent book for any yoga practitioner. The spiral binding is worth the price of the book alone, and the routines are most helpful. Most yoga books don't outline routines and beginners or people with no access to yoga classes are left wanting. The book fills this need.
Of course it doesn't address the spirituality behind Yoga. If it were to do so, it would be an encyclopedic book. For beginners looking to explore Yoga's spirituality, a very good starting point is Donna Farhi's "Bringing Yoga into Life." Patel touches on certain points in a way designed to pique the reader's curiosity, such as the ayurvedic methods, and she provides websites at the back of the book for further exploration.
The asanas are good, solid beginner to intermediate asanas, and I appreciate the contraindications listed for some of them, which isn't provided by most yoga books. I wish more asanas were listed, such as the half-pigeon pose (a favorite of mine) but the book, at least, whets the appetite for more. The only concern I have about the asanas is that there aren't enough pictures outlining some inverted poses, such as the Headstand or the Shoulderstand; when the head and neck are involved, one cannot be too careful. I like seeing the poses and counterposes in their proper sequences, although I wish the author would discuss the need and reason for following a pose with a counterpose at more length.
And now I'm off to do a routine, with the book laid flat on the floor!』
(Total Yoga by Patel) 『This is an excellent foundational work for beginning yoga enthusiasts and practitioners. The basics are discussed at great length. For instance, Kriya yoga is action-based. Sahaya is spontaneous practice of the art and Viniyoga consists of a series of fluid movements aimed at deep relaxation and concentration. The Vinyasa Ashtanga emphasize synchronous breathing techniques to promote health and well-being. The practice of yoga even extends to food; whereas, the sattvic are considered to be wholesome foods as opposed to processed foods. The basic postural elements of yoga are explained. For instance, the easy posture or leg fold is demonstrated pictorially together with the more advanced forms. This work is excellent if you are a beginner. It explains all the techniques in simple English with diagrams depicting the various motional dimensions of yoga. It is a good value for the price charged.』
(Excellent Book for Any Level, But Not Comprehensive) 『I agree with the previous reviewer that the book is well-designed. The spiral notebook spine makes it perfect for laying out while you practice. Everything is illustrated with photos, including blow-ups/close-ups for the more complicated aspects of the asanas. I also enjoy the fact that routines for all age groups, levels of mastery, and states of health (e.g., menopausal and pregnant) are listed with clear, easy-to-follow directions. In short, the book is a great guide for beginners and experts alike looking to try yoga or refresh their memory in the absence of an instructor.
My only caveat is that if you are looking for a blend of the spiritual/metaphysical/philosophical aspect along with the physical aspect of yoga, you will definitely not get it here. The yoga in this book is presented in a very Western, I daresay clinical fashion. The philosophy is implied or sprinkled throughout only to be glossed over, since you can't get into this much detail about yoga without making a few references, however fleeting, to the "other side" (non-physical) of yoga. Any persons who are new to yoga and fear any of the "brain washing" aspects from philosophical indoctrination (which I think is a bogus notion to begin with) need not fear any of that here. The book is very good, low price or not, and thorough in many respects - all the ones most beginners will be concerned with - but it doesn't quite merit the "total" part of its title.』
『Fresh, stylish and intensely useable, this step-by-step progressive guide explores the foundations of good yoga practice with a flowing sequence of quick-reference figures. Total Yoga shows how to fit yoga into any situation: commuting, sitting at a desk, or working out at the gym. Posture and breathing exercises help alleviate over 50 common ailments, from back pain and women's heath problems to allergies and insomnia. Over 200 full-color photographs are featured.』

(No Show) 『This book was a big disappointment to me as it provided very little information on how to actually do the recommended exercises. For a book of less than 200 pages, it has almost 1/3 dedicated to discussion of general yoga topics. It has a Preface, Acknowledgements, an Introduction, Theories of Yoga, Traditional Yoga vs. Yoga for Golfers - we haven't gotten to any actual instruction yet. A better choice for golfers looking for more flexibility and comfort would be Roger Fredericks DVD series.』
(Disappointing) 『This book was not what I expected it to be. The photographs are small and in black and white.
