(Without doubt one of the finest, most inspiring books I have come across!) 『If any of the mystical traditions appeal to you, please invest the small price to own this book. Clearly and concisely this small treasure reviews Patanjali's sutras. Alberto Villoldo makes them poetry to the soul and heart. Each sutra is given a few sentences so beautifully expressed that no more is necessary. To alleviate "disciple-quilt" he states so wonderfully to the advancing student on page xxvii "As Swami Venkatesananda said: "Renounce the self that does the renunciation". With so many New Age books leaving enthusiasts with an almost inability to speak a sentence without self-correction, "Yoga, Power, and Spirit" takes the true student to the heart of the ancient traditions and well beyond the superficial hype of the current, sometimes, very limiting explanation of the metaphysical and sacred. Simply Dr. Villoldo gives us an easily understood adjunct to other sound authors such as Paramahansa Yogananda, Wayne Dyer and Greg Braden. He is in that class!』
(Yoga, Power, and Spirit: Patanjali the Shaman) 『This book is a portable treasure chest of inspirations. Dr. Villoldo doesn't just reword the old, he renews it for what is needed by today's humanity. It is a bridge between yesterday and tomorrow. Read it and let it come alive within you and renew your spirit for the future.』

The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali is the classic text on the spiritual practice of yoga. Written more than 2,000 years ago, this work is a map to the fast track to enlightenment. They derive from an ancient oral tradition, whenDevi, the Divine feminine, was worshiped. Yet, today, the Yoga Sutra is taught by priests and scholars from a masculine Hindu tradition that obscures the simple wisdom in it.Yoga, Power, and Spiritshows us that the Sutra is pre-Hindu, and that the power ofDeviand enlightenment are available to us at all times, without guru, temple, or decades of study. Yoga isthedirect path to enlightenment. Patanjali taught that all knowledge was acquired directly from the Source. This bookreveals how the power ofDevican guide the practitioner of yoga to sure and inevitable self-realization.Alberto Villoldois a shaman who has practiced Yoga for 25 years, and embraced the way of the Divine feminine. He has traveled to the source of India's holy rivers in the Himalayas to rediscover the wisdom of the Sadhu, India’s ancient shamans. He brings to life the spiritual teachings of yoga in a pure, practical, and irreverent way—stripped of dogma and brimming with poetry and spirit.

(Essential Buddhist Yoga) 『The Tibetan Book Yoga is a beautifully designed book, very easy to read, and Western oriented in its informal and practical style. Yet it not only delights but also gives us essential information -- rather hard to come across -- on the practice of Buddhist Yoga. A true jewel.』
(Enlightening!) 『This book is WONDERFUL. As others have mentioned, the illustrations and explanations of the postures sometimes seem a little light, but it is an amazing book! I have practiced yoga for several years and recently learned about tong-len; to see them so effortlessly merged in this practice seems perfect!! I did find a DVD with the same title (also by Geshe Michael Roach ) at the following link: [...]. I haven't had a chance to watch the DVD yet, but am hopeful it will shed more light on the physical postures. Even without "perfect" asanas, though, I believe that this "mindful" yoga will do much to bring peace and harmony to those who practice it. As westerners, we often get very caught up in the physical side of yoga; this book helps explain why it's important to delve deeper. 』
(awesome) 『the tebetan book of yoga is so good. it is exactly what i was looking for. it is easy to read and understand, and has deepened my yoga practice and daily life.』
(Finally the truth is being told!) 『For about 45 yrs I have done so-called inner energy training of the Chinese, Japanese and of India. This book tells the story in a concise manner, of what has been mostly lost from Yoga Hatha and other arts. I also read "How Yoga Works" by Geshe Michael and am now looking for a workshop to attend. This is strong meat for men and women...not milk for babes.』 『
Yoga came to Tibet from India more than a thousand years ago, and it was quickly absorbed into the culture's rich traditions. In this small book readers will discover Heart Yoga, which developed over the centuries in the Gelukpa tradition of the Dalai Lamas. The program presented here combines popular yoga exercises wtih special Tibetan poses, and methods of working from the inside to give a healthy and a happy heart.
Roach discovered a number of previously unknown Tibetan works on yoga in the course of his ongoing efforts to find and preserve ancient Tibetan Buddhist texts. He discusses the ideas and insights presented in these texts and places them within the context of the Buddhist tradition. To help readers incorporate this ancient wisdom in their daily lives, he provides a specific regime of yoga postures and meditations. Combining instructive illustrations with the unique philosophical underpinnings of the Buddhist approach, Geshe Roach has created a unique program for yoga on a physical and spiritual level.
』 『Geshe Michael Roach'sThe Tibetan Book of Yogais an excellent second yoga book for someone who is interested in Buddhism and is looking to deepen his or her yoga practice. The slim volume--based on Heart Yoga from the Gelukpa tradition of the Dalai Lamas--delves more into the philosophy behind the poses than their practice. In the first four chapters Roach provides a quick history of Heart Yoga and introduces the uniquely Tibetan Buddhist aspects of the practice. Drawing on Tibetan conceptions of human physiology, Heart Yoga imagines five levels to work in each yoga pose. These levels include the physical body and the breath but also encompass the "inner winds" (internal energy channels), thoughts, and "world-seeds" (each seed is a part of karma that "ripens when we look at something, and colors how we see it").Heart Yoga is infused withtong-len, a Tibetan meditation of "giving and taking" where the practitioner generates compassion through a mental image of taking away pain from others and giving joy. In later chapters, Roach walks his readers through the 10 exercises that form the core of the daily, 30-minute Heart Yoga practice. Each exercise is described in modest detail (with a few accompanying black-and-white photographs) before Geshe Roach offers his commentary on how the exercise serves the development of the five levels. Throughout, he remains centered on the fifth level, world-seeds, and the generation of compassion, as the vital foundation for successful, long-term practice.Roach, the first American to receive the title "Geshe," has done a valuable service in bringing these ancient Tibetan traditions to a wider, English-speaking audience. ButThe Tibetan Book of Yogais not a comprehensive guide for a yoga beginner. Roach suggests in the text that readers "piggy back" on other yoga teachers and teachings to learn correct pose form and avoid injury. In the end,The Tibetan Book of Yogafills an important niche in Western yoga as an introduction to Tibetan philosophy of yoga, an introduction that may well spawn a new generation of books, videos and schools to expand on its teaching.--Patrick O'Kelley』

(Vital Yoga Book) 『I love this book. When I first encountered it years ago I thought the woman was a little kooky with all the talk about the "spiritual body" but over the years I keep returning to this book. In fact, it is one of the few books I insisted on replacing after losing my house in Katrina. There is no flowery language here, despite the spiritual talk. The author is so straightforward you only have to read a few sentences before you have to stop and let the truth sink in. Very few yoga writers are this direct. This book is definitely worth buying.』
(Very good book, insightfull.) 『The descriptions above are accurate, the text is informative and thorough. Really a very good book, very insightfull. I didn't give it 5 stars because at times... Yes it's a yoga philosophy book but at times I found it contained passages either very redundant or of the type 'I'm not gonna tell you now, but I will in later chapters'. But I do prefer drier texts without the flowers. That being said, this is definately a must read for those interested.』
(find your heart and live a truly consonant life) 『this small book holds a synthesis of the yoga school of Kashmir shaivism -- read it and you will add immesurably to your life. there is such wisdom here, expressed concisely and accessibly. read it and love!!』
(Human Ethics) 『This book has given me a whole new perspective on Life, Love, God. It is my hope everyone I know will read it as its message is helpful, hopefull and completely true.』 『The first book to explain why the philosophy of yoga, not technique, is the key to developing courage, confidence, and well-being.
Christensen's book equips readers with the confidence and courage to persevere even in the face of obstacles-an added bonus to yoga's other benefits of strength, relaxation, and piece of mind. Table of Contents: Introduction - A Journey to Your Powerful Inner World Chapter 1The Spiritual Body: Your Inner Power Source Chapter 2Many Roads All Ending in One Place Chapter Introduction to the Ten Ethical Principles of Yoga Chapter 4 Ethic #1-Nonviolence: Don't Harm Yourself Chapter 5 Ethic #2-Truthfulness: Don't Lie to Yourself Chapter 6 Ethic #3-Nonstealing: Don't Steal from Yourself or Others Chapter 7 Ethic #4-Celibacy: Be Respectful and Aware of Sexual Desire in Yourself Chapter 8 Ethic #5-Nonhoarding: Simplify the Things You Want and the Things You Need Chapter 9 Ethic #6-Purity: Make Yourself Clear and Powerful Chapter 10 Ethic #7-Contentment: Practice Being Happy In the Moment Chapter 11 Ethic #8-Tolerance: Encourage Heroic Capability in Yourself Chapter 12 Ethic #9-Study: Nourish Your Spiritual Body Chapter 13 Ethic #10-Remembrance: Recognize the Support of Your Spiritual Body Chapter 14 The Passion of Unity』
『The postures, orasanas, of yoga are only the half of it, according to Alice Christensen, founder of the American Yoga Association. "Many practitioners begin to realize after some time there is 'something else' to be discovered in Yoga that speaks to our universal desire for meaning," she says. While the daily exercises are tuning the physical body into shape, mystical awareness begins to emerge."
This awareness can be focused and honed by abiding by ethical tenets, explained in this book, that are intended to help the yoga practitioner attain personal growth, confidence, and a sense of well-being. In fact, Christensen writes, the movements of yoga were developedafterthe guidelines, in order to maintain the body's health while the practitioner worked toward a higher state of spiritual awareness. Christensen illustrates these tenets, including nonviolence, truthfulness, purity, tolerance, and remembrance, with colorful anecdotes. For example, she once spoke about yoga at a heavy-equipment manufacturing company in southern Ohio. She brought up the celibacy tenet, how it differs from abstinence, and how it's best to start to incorporate it into your life slowly. She advised those in the audience to try not to think about sex for five minutes at a time. One intrigued audience member said, "Geez, can you imagine how restful that would be--five minutes of not thinking about broads?"
Even if you start out by making subtle changes, the guidelines for living suggested in this book are bound to bring about dramatic change. It's a sort ofPower Yogafor the mind, crossed with a simple-living guide, and written by a true sage. For anyone looking to reach a state of self-actualization and empowerment, Christensen's forged a fine path.--Erica Jorgensen』

(Marvelous book for all) 『Reviewed by Lisa Bullert for Reader Views (4/07)
"Sukha" is the word I have chosen from "Sacred Sanskrit Words" to describe my feelings while studying this book. Sukha means, in short "ease, peace, inner joy." "Sacred Sanskrit Words" is a wonderful tool to have in order to make the most of yoga, meditation, and chant sessions.
Leeza Lowitz and Reema Datta begin "Sacred Sanskrit Words" by explaining the history of Sanskrit, and how to pronounce the words. Then in the section entitled "Sacred Sound," the authors teach about how powerful Sanskrit words are and how each sound is sacred, among other fascinating lessons; and even about the scientific basis for the Sanskrit language. Often, this reviewer skips the introduction to a book in order to get to the "meat," but in the case of "Sacred Sanskrit Words," reading the intro is well worth it -- quite interesting and enlightening.
The "Sacred Sanskrit Words" section is one that reader should not rush through, but study, taking in each word and its meaning. This is a great book to read when there are only a few spare moments to find peace in the day. Pick this up on the go, carry it wherever you go. These words will change any day into a good day.
Then, to top it all off, Lowitz and Datta throw in several beautiful chants. The authors do a wonderful job of explaining what these chants are for and how to do them.
In the opinion of this reviewer, this is marvelous book for all, for anyone looking for knowledge, searching for inner peace; or looking to enhance his or her meditation, chant and yoga sessions. This is a great stress reliever. I have learned a lot from "Sacred Sanskrit Words," and I have been able to make life a little less stressful and more enjoyable for reading this.』
(Interesting Primer) 『A delightful introduction to common Sanskrit terms that one comes across in works pertaining to Buddhist or Hindu practices and beliefs. Provides a better understanding of the terms included in the work and may stimulate more interest in the study of the beautiful Sanskrit language itself. The selection of the Sanskrit chants is small and arbitrary.』
(Introducing more than 160 spiritually significant Sanskrit words) 『Sacred Sanskrit Words For Yoga, Chant, And Meditation is the collaborative work of experienced and expert yoga instructors Leza Lowitz and Reema Datta. Introducing more than 160 spiritually significant Sanskrit words (including some of which like karma , nirvana, and chakra have entered the English language) with Devangari scripts, pronunciations, chants, and brief cultural as well as historical explanations, Sacred Sanskrit Words is a practical and exceptionally portable paperback reference book with native script renderings large enough to reproduce as tattoos or decorative art. Especially recommended as a resource for dedicated students of yoga, and meditation, Sacred Sanskrit Words is an invaluable addition to personal and academic library Eastern Religion reference collections and supplemental studies lists. 』
(unsure of authority) 『As a translator, I'm always wary of people who take responsibility for translating from one language into another without a firm grounding in both languages. I realize that it's done, but in my personal experience, a lot gets lost unless the person is an absolute master in his or her area of expertise. I bought this book out of curiousity, but it seems to be riding a trend, not contributing much to the field.』 『
"A must-have for anyone who is new and serious about exporing the subject further. Also recommended for advanced practitioners who may want to 'brush-up' on their Sanskrit." --Yoga Magazine UK

"...A joy to read: it has accuracy in its translations, beauty in its presentation, and conveys the spiritual richness of the yogic tradition. It will definitely enrich the life of many yoga teachers and students." --Ascent Magazine
Joseph Campbell called Sanskrit "the great spiritual language of the world." Usually ships in 24 hours 『These four traditional guided Yoga meditation practices of 3, 7, 11, and 30 minutes are for those who want to gain a solid foundation practice in traditional meditation that will lead to advanced meditation. By repeatedly following these basic practices, meditation will naturally deepen, gradually leading to the direct experience of the pure consciousness and joy, which is beyond the mind.
These are authentic renderings of meditation as taught in the Himalayas by the masters of traditional Yoga meditation. The methods are consistent with authentic meditation teachings of the most respected instruction manuals, including the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and Vedanta meditation of the Upanishads. These guided meditations integrate both mindfulness and concentration meditation, and lead one towards kundalini awakening and the enlightened state of samadhi through the path of meditation.
Each of the four meditations follows the same systematic approach, although they are of different lengths to match your time available and your personal inclination. They each guide your attention inward through the levels of your own body, breath, and mind, allowing your awareness to come to rest in a very relaxed state of deep stillness and silence. This systematic approach of self-awareness is one of the most direct and effective forms of meditation.
Simply decide how long you would like to spend with your meditation, and choose the 3, 7, 11, or 30 minute guided practice. You will discover for yourself that calmness, serenity, and peace of mind can be experienced in even a few minutes.
Following the custom of the ancient sages, the depth of Yoga meditation comes from inner awareness of the levels of your own self, rather than by diverting attention through music, as pleasant as music can be. Therefore, there is intentionally no music in these recordings. This inner exploring through self-awareness is a more refined form of meditation that leads you deeper into the stillness and silence of your own being.
Gently focus your attention on each of the aspects of yourself as the voice guides you, including awareness of your body, then your breath, then your mind, and then beyond. Allow all of the other thoughts, emotions, sensations, images, or impressions to come. It is the nature of the mind for thoughts to come. It is also natural for them to go. As your attention moves systematically inward, you gradually learn to remain undisturbed, unaffected, and uninvolved by the streams of thoughts as they naturally rise and fall. Even a few minutes of stillness and silence, every day, is a very nice gift to give your self.

(required text in my teachings) 『i share consciousness in the world, and this book is one of the three that i require as reading material. i can pick up almost any page at any time, and the teaching strikes my internal core directly. thankyou Daniel Odier for bringing such lightness of being and presence to me, and this world.』
(A Gift to Western Seekers) 『Daniel Odier's rendering of the Spandakarika is a valuable resource for all seekers, but especially for westerners.
Most seekers are familiar with the great spiritual heritage of India and the spiritual wealth it has offered the world. Famous texts like 'Autobiography of a Yogi' or 'The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna' and the ancient texts are brimming with spiritual wisdom and humor, but I have always found such texts to be difficult at times for westerners like myself to comprehend completely. The times in which they lived, their traditions, culture, and language are indeed quite different from our own.
Authors like Danier Odier are refreshing to westerners (america, europe, canada, australia) in that they are more easily grasped by us. This book is a translation and commentary of one of the oldest and most important writings on Kashmir Shaivism (a pillar of Hindu mysticism). Odier, who has successfully traversed the path of sadhana by the grace of his teacher, describes the meaning of these texts in western terms. His humor, his metaphors, and the stories of his own personal experience of the 'sacred tremor' were invaluable to me and I found them far more revealing than the translation of the actual text itself.』
(Ch'an ordination of a spiritual master) 『This book presents translations of early Tantras (sacred Tantric texts). In this book Odier reports that "in the spring of 2004 in China, I met the Grand Ch'an master Jing Hui, dharma heir of Xu Yun, better known in the United States as `Empty Cloud' (1839-1959), who is recognized as the foremost Ch'an master of the twentieth century. My master Jing Hui gave me the Ch'an ordination in the Lin t'si and Caodong schools, as well as the permission to transmit the Zhao Zhou Ch'an spirit in the West." Ch'an is Chinese Zen.』
(Yoga Spandakarika) 『The Yoga Spandakarika (spanda: sacred tremor; karika: set of verse), originally written in the ninth century by Kallata, is one of the fundamental Tantric texts of Kashmir Saivism. Teacher and author Daniel Odier brings one of the first translations of this scripture to the West with clear and engaging language and commentaries. In the book, he also presents the Vijnana-Bhairava - another fundamental text of Kashmir Saivism - and other scriptures to help assimilate the teachings. A main principle of the book is that of spanda, the sacred tremor that inhabits everything. Odier teaches that in order to feel the tremor, we have to find the root of desire and experiment with that excitement, that shivering delight. He goes further to say that we come across this tremor in our everyday life, but in order to tune in to the Divine, we need our desires to be objectless. This is quite a challenge for me, but Odier continues by saying that the point is to understand that everything is Divine and that divinity is not an object so we should turn our desires toward that "objectless Divinity." At that moment, we can feel spanda without a cause or effect; we can just become the Spanda. He also encourages the practitioner to adopt a "spherical view," where everything is included in our practice. That view enables us to evolve without limitation and helps us to integrate wholeness in our lives. The first section of the Yoga Spandakarika offers a full translation of the fifty-three verses, while the second section features Odier's commentary interlaced with the Spandakarika text and other sacred texts. The translations are fluid and poetic, and the commentaries illuminate the verse in an engaging way without using overly complex language and concepts. Daniel Odier has a long history of training and practice in Tibetan Buddhism through his teacher Kalu Rinpoche. In another of his books (Tantra: l'initiation d'un Occidentalà l'amour absolue, Paris: J.-C. Lattès, 1996; Pocket 1998), he explains his training with a Tantrika Master named Lalita Devi, who taught him the Tandava: a dance where the practitioner learns how to feel the spanda throughout his body. He has also trained in Ch'an Buddhism with Chinese master Jing Hui. I was quite pleased by this book and feel that Daniel Odier writes from a place of experience and not simply intellectual knowledge. The poetic translation reminded me that sacred texts are indeed poems and many translations rarely offer this. In my own path I have come to understand that Divine Mother encompasses my whole life and if I try to cut some part of my life, then I am only negating a part of my own divinity. The Yoga Spandakarika helped me realize how my human feelings are key tools to understanding this divinity, and that the Divine can be as close as a shiver of joy.』 『
Translation and commentary of one of the most important texts of the Kashmirian Shivaism tradition of Tantra
• Author was a student of the late Kalu Rinpoche
• Explores the transmission of Mahamudra, the Great Cosmic Gesture
• Includes the Vijnanabhaïrava Tantra, which contains the totality of the oldest source text on Yoga
The Spandakarika, the "Tantric Song of the Divine Pulsation," is said to have been transmitted directly to the sage Vasugupta from the hands of Shiva on Mount Kailas. In his commentary on these fifty-two stanzas, the sage Ksemaraja described them as the heart of the Mahamudra.
The oldest masters of Spandakarika viewed everything in the universe, including matter, as consciousness and created a yoga practice in accordance with this realization. The sacred dance of Yoga Spandakarika, Tandava, is extremely subtle and difficult, requiring thousands of hours of practice to master, yet it surpasses any other physical practice, allowing the practitioner to touch the divine inner pulse. Once its third stage has been mastered, the yogi or yogini is able to manifest the dance of Shiva in space, a tradition visible in the statuary of Tantric temples in India and Tibet. Energy is no longer contracted by the perception of duality, and the mind and body become unbounded, forming a sphere that contains all that was formerly outside. InYoga SpandakarikaDaniel Odier passes on these vanishing teachings as he received them from his Tibetan master, Kalu Rinpoche, and Kashmiri yogi Lalita Devi.
