(A living yogi)
『A true gift to mankind is found in this author -- I've been watching his serene face in weird, twisted poses, and have been following his instructions for breathing (pranayama) for a long breathless moment, and he still amazes me.

This book is one of dozens that reflect on the writing of patanjali, a bce period holy man that wrote three books about what he felt were important issues for society as a whole, and individuals one-at-a-time. The books were about Yoga, Ayurvedic medicine, and the Sanskrit language. Each book was written like poetry, with each stanza talking about consciousness and the role that yoga (path, in Sanskrit) plays in that journey. A must have for anyone who considers yoga important to their existence and to mankind in general.』

(Shed your own Light....)
『The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are a simple, clear series of aphorisms designed to help a person realize that the human mind is controllable.
I read a portion of them daily. This famous yoga author proves that too many words can muddy even the clearest water.
As Patanjali himself said, "There is knowledge of everything through intuition".
I feel there are too many books written on "how to" understand spiritual
teachings, and that this is another one.
There are many translations of the Sutras available. Buy one, and if, after reading it, you need someone elses opinion, buy this book.』

(One of the Best translations of the Vedic Scriptures!!!!)
『This Translation of the Yoga sutras...is Superb!!! The only translation of this or any other vedic scripture that is on the same level is Swami Satchitandas yoga sutras, both are the jewels of all modern translations of the Vedas! I have been studying and practising the vedic religion since 1996 and both B.K.S Iyengar and Swami Satchitanandas translations are the most comprehensive, in-depth, intuitive, scholarly and truly Spiritual and Vedic, and not tinged with a particular cult/sect slant. I believe that the reason that both men have written such Great translations...is because they are generational Caste Brahmanas....period. That is why they have such an in-depth understanding of the Vedic sriptures and principles. Iyengars translation...to me, is Mind blowing!!! I could only read one or two pages at a time, just to really ingest and digest the information on an intuitive and intellectual levels. With this translation and Swami Satchitanandas translations....ALL OTHER TRANSLATIONS OF THE VEDAS PALE IN COMPARISION!...and are the scribblings of philosopical neophytes....period. This book has help me so much with dharana and other aspects of my daily Meditational practices. B.K.S Iyengar gives alot of scholarly, useful information.』

(even if you have never been to a yoga class ...)
『... this book will still be of great interest and value to you if you are spiritually inclined.

the top reviewers assertion that the yoga sutras represents the theory behind the practice of hatha yoga is not really correct.

hatha yoga (which is what 'yoga' normally stands for in the west) is actually only a minor part of the yoga sutras - i think it occurs in no more than a single verse in the text! one can infact say that to be a yogi as per patanjali one needn't even practice hatha yoga!

historically the most ancient philosophical school in india was the saamkya as taught by the sage kapila (even for the historical buddha circa 500 bc, kaplia was 'ancient'). patanjala yoga is traditionally considered the sister system of the saamkya. while saamkya taught metaphysics and the theory of enlightenment - about the eternal purusha (one's true self/soul), the transient praakriti (primal matter which includes the body and mind as well as the objects we experience), how the purusha is seduced by the 'dance' of praakriti and thus bound to a limited existence and how the seperation of the two effects enlightenment - yoga provided a practical path as to how such enlightenment can be effected. thus one of the traditional meanings of the sanskrit words 'saamkya' and 'yoga' itself is 'theory' and 'practice'.

the heart of the yoga sutra lies in the verse 'chitta vritti nirodah' - the cessation of mental modifications. ie when the mind is controlled and brought to stillness, you will know the true nature of your own self - enlightenment.

hatha yoga can be used as an aid to achieve this goal - that is what it was created for - but that doesn't make it indispensable. there're even more serious philosophical/spiritual/ethical/discipinary issues involved which is what this text mostly covers apart from the philosophy.

so this book is more for those who're looking for greater spiritual/philosophical depth behind/beyond the science of hatha yoga. or for anybody who is looking for greater depth and meaning and spirituality in life even if they have never been to a yoga class. this is a seriously deep spiritual text.

btw saamkya had no place for 'God' in its philosophy. even for patanjali, yoga does not mean union with god (as per the popular interpretation) - rather the seperation of purusha from praakriti, where god *can* help.』

(excellent, but only for professionals)
『This beautiful book from the world teacher Iyengar was difficult to read, and I am teaching yoga already for 25 years. So, for me it was marvellous, but not recommended for beginners.

Herman Gielen. Holland.

『This book provided readers with a fresh and accessible translation of this ancient text.』

(Poor sound, good yoga nidra)
『There's no denying that the sound quality is poor on this recording but the purpose is to follow the instructions, not to conduct a critique of the acoustic technology. As a technology of consciousness this is a good example of yoga nidra - the quality of commercially available yoga nidra is variable and this is one of the better ones. My only complaint is that the end is a little sudden.

Nevertheless, one of the aims of yoga nidra is to hold the consciousness at the threshold of alpha and theta brainwaves and this disc will certainly facilitate that end.』

(The point of this offering)
『An Occult 1977 Classic Collector's item with the fullest advanced Yoga Nidra ever released as taught by Paramahansa Satyananda Saraswati in 1965. This CD contains the advanced ingredients of "Nyasa" and is unlike other offering of Yoga Nidra as it contains the Tantric core that digs deeper and awakes very specific area of the brain. CD adds to Chakra and Kundalini workbooks information of Yoga Nidra as well as offering a great tool to a stressed out world. As a student of Swami Anandakapila Sarawati online courses it's not surprising that this CD information is part of his wonderfully put together courses. So the point of this offering is not in the sound track it's in the end results in the person that truly practices the techniques offer within the CD.』

(Authentic Yoga Nidra with Nyasa)
『I have just reviewed the couple of negative comments made on amazon.com, and it is obvious that the persons do not understand and therefore will not yet benefit from the deeper implications of the Tantric practice of Nyasa.

This is the first Yoga Nidra recording that I have heard containing Nyasa, and I am so glad that now more people worldwide will now be able to purchase it via amazon.com. This beautiful recording of the technique of Yoga Nidra captures the most advanced elements of Yoga Nidra ever released, and importantly it is, as taught by Paramahamsa Satyananda Saraswati in 1965.

It is important that dedicated disciples of Paramahamsa Satyananda Saraswati that have been initiated into these classical Tantric Yoga techniques (some which were briefly revealed) keep the techniques alive, so that current and future Yoga Aspirants and Sadhaks treading the path of Self Realization have the opportunity to experience our Guru's Tantric Yoga.

Many of Paramahamsa Satyanandaji's early (1960's) teachings such as the Yoga Nidra which contained the important element of Nyasa, appear to have been later "removed" from the original sequence that most of us have been exposed to.

I started practicing Yoga Nidra as taught by the Satyananda Yoga Ashrams worldwide in 1984 (24 years ago) and from then, up until Guru Poornima in 2006 I had never been taught the Nyasa during Yoga Nidra.

It was only then during my visit with Swami Anandakapila on the auspicious day of Guru Poornima, when we sat together in a meditation posture doing the practice (whilst listening to the original cassette tape which Swami Anandkapila graciously lent me), had I heard Yoga Nidra taught using Nyasa. I consider that moment an initiation into authentic Tantric Yoga Nidra, and I am still fathoming in the deeper implications.

Thank you Swamiji for being who you are, a rare gem in this world of which is known as the great samsara.

(Surprisingly Good)
『I also half way believed the lousy reviews below. However, I try to buy everything on yoga nidra available and make it a primary practice.

I was entranced by the soulful quality this had in terms of depth and the charismatic quality of the voice that actually leads you through yoga nidra. I found this to have a much more authentically spiritual feel to it than any of the others. You can practically smell the incense this is so authentically yogic. And the lady who does the actual leading through the process was almost enchanting, I thought.

In fact, I was somewhat amused that after listening to this a couple of times I felt emotionally involved with her. This sounds ridiculous but I mention it just to give an example of how much more engaging this was than some of the more california feeling ones.

Nothing in yoga nidra is more important than the charisma of the voice leading your through the process. If the voice fascinates it is much easier for it to hold your attention and you don't find yourself cutting zzz's instead of meditating.

Well, if the flavor of authentic India tantra is your cup of tea, or if you just think it might be, give this a listen. It won't disappoint.

Best of luck in your spiritual life.』

(The best Yoga Nidra CD on the market)
『I am amazed at the two negative reviews here. To say that this CD is bad due to it being taken from the original tape recording is akin to saying the Sistine Chapel is bad due to some flaky paintwork. I have found this CD to be much deeper than the other Yoga Nidra recordings I have worked with. That is not to put other teachers down but Swami Anandakapila for me is the only teacher I know of who brings us the very essence of Tantra. This work offers us a deeper, authentic experience of relaxation seldom taught.』

Yoga nidra is a life-changing technique practiced by sages and yogis for thousands of years. Available for the first time as a digitally remastered compact disc, Yoga Nidra Meditation can help you achieve a unique state of consciousness conducive to self-healing and spiritual growth.

Dr. Jonn Mumford, a world-renowned authority on Tantra and yoga, and Jasmine Riddle will guide you through Tantric meditation and visualization exercises. Accompanied by music and mantras, your conscious awareness will rotate through your physical body, mental images and sensations, and the chakras—ultimately ending with "psychic sleep." During this special state of consciousness between wakefulness and sleep, you can communicate with your subconscious.

Full relaxation—physical, mental and emotional—is just one of the many benefits of yoga nidra. The enclosed sixteen-page booklet explores how this technique is a catalyst for efficient sleep, deep meditation, healing childhood traumas, awakening the chakras, and spiritual enlightenment.』

(yoga can make us all healthier)
『I am a beginner in yoga. I want to learn it to help me stretch my body and relax it. This book was recommended by my yoga teacher and seems to be a great all purpose book, with information accessible to beginners but challenging to seasoned yoga practicers.』

(Start a Yoga Program on Your Own)
『This book is the best for self instruction. The illustrations are superb and the instructions to match. You work in a step by step manner and move on to the next lesson only after you conquer the moves from your present lesson. The philosophy of yoga is well explained and this book will help hook you permanently in the practice. I have purchased several copies to give to friends as gifts. They have all expressed great gratitude for leading them into this practice. I have benefitted immensely from using this book and I am hooked forever in the practice of yoga.』

(Great Photos, Great Information)
『I have several books and DVDs on yoga. I definitely agree that seeing yoga in motion really helps you learn the progression and movies. I also understand that there are many situations where you simply don't have access to a TV! Sometimes having a book to stare at, to really examine the poses and read the words, can be just as helpful in its own way to understanding how yoga works.

This is definitely the case with Yoga for Your Life by Margaret D Pierce and Martin G Pierce. This large format book is full of glossy, full color photos of poses. It is laid out as a step by step instruction manual, starting with simple breathing and moving along to more complex poses. It's not about twisting yourself into a pretzle - it's about finding flexibility, strength, stress relief and calm in your life.

The book is very clear about taking things slow and easy. It explains that yoga is NOT about pain. You do a pose until you reach resistance, and you hold it there. You don't push until it hurts. It doesn't matter what anybody else is doing. Yoga is not about competition. It is solely about you doing the best you currently can, and working to gently improve each day.

So, towards that aim, the book provides wonderfully simple, step by step instructions. You begin with breathing and simple twists. You move along to more complex poses, but nothing involves superhuman spinal bends or other unusual shapes. It is all about learning to balance, learning to support yourself, learning to flex. Gently.

For each pose they discuss options for people who cannot quite do what is being shown. We all have our unique limitations, and the book understands that. There is always a way to progress forward.

Well recommended! Yes, you should have a DVD too so you can see the poses in motion. But in terms of a book to look through, to read and reread, I definitely suggest taking a look at this one.

(minimal amount of useful information)
『this book is useless as an aid to practice.
there are many photos, but the pictures don't provide
enough information to guide a newbie, and the routines
provide nothing for more advanced practioners.

(The Best Beginning Yoga Book Out There)
『In my opinion, this is absolutely the best beginning yoga book you will find anywhere. It is not a book about getting into perfect pretzel shaped postures; it is not a book pushing Eastern philosophy; and it is not just another fad exercise book. This is a serious, well balanced, and gentle introduction to yoga. It's focus is on teaching yoga movements and postures in a gentle way that is accessible to anyone, and on introducing yoga as a means to improving your overall sense of well being and health.

"Yoga for Your Life" is organized into a set of lessons that guide you gently from simple movements towards the more familiar postures you might see in other books, but at every step of the way, emphasis is placed on adopting the postures to your body. This makes yoga accessible to anyone no matter what their age or physical fitness level or body type.

The lessons are beautifully illustrated with color photos of real people performing the movements in each lesson. There are no dry stick figures; there are no yogis in loin cloths; there are no unrealistic models. Just real people demonstrating each sequence of poses.

One of the most helpful features of the illustrated instructions is the way one's breathing is linked to specific movements of the body. Many yoga books describe this in words, but "Yoga for Your Life" has incorporated the breathing very clearly into the photo sequences of the lessons. By linking one's breathing to the movement of one's body, the whole experience feels more purposeful, and focused.

Throughout the book sidebars and other commentary introduce you to the ways in which yoga can be integrated into your life beyond just the physical exercises, but as with the postures, emphasis is on adopting what works for you.

Having tried several introductory yoga books, this is the one that really clicked with me, and enabled me to actually make yoga part of my life. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a beginning introduction to yoga book.』

"Yoga is the most powerful system of stress management, but it is also...a system for transforming our awareness and quieting down our mind and body to experience inner sources of peace, joy, and well-being. I highly recommend Yoga For Your Life as a practical and clear guide..."--Dean Ornish, M.D. Over 400 beautiful color photographs present the spirit of yoga adapted to fit the American lifestyle. Along with eight progressive, easy-to-follow lessons are innovative methods for making yoga work for you every day--to wake up, calm anxiety, focus the mind, and prevent insomnia. Even if you're a beginner, you can pick up this book and start practicing right now! 160 pages (all in color), 8 1/2 x 11.

(This has been a great resource as a yoga student/teacher)
『I bought this book at a discount sale before I really knew that much about yoga. Later I became so intrigued with the healing power of yoga that I studied to be a yoga teacher. During the course of my study I had to write research papers, study asana, learn about body structure, healing, and the spiritual journey. This book was not a book that was required reading but it was one of my most used resources. It helped me to see an American Yogis journey and relate it to my own life. Although some people might criticize the occasional personal story in the book, I enjoyed every personal moment that was written about. The stories made the book an easy read as well as made the possibility of becoming a good yogi seem accessible to me, not just something that "other people" can accomplish.

This book went very well with the Light on Life book by BKS Iyengar. The asana information has been of great benefit too, I like to have many different descriptions about the particulars of a pose. I'm a healthier person because of this book. Thank you Beryl Binder Birch, because of this book you've been one of my gurus.』

(no more stories! please!)
『Birch once again gives us more information about herself than is needed. Check out Donna Farhi's "Yoga: Mind, Body and Spirit" for a more thorough examination of the subject matter without all of the self-important jibber-jabber.』

(A clear intro to the 8 limbs of Astanga Yoga)
『Power Yoga, Beryl Bender Birch's first book, is a great introduction to developing a strong asana practice. In Beyond Power Yoga, Beryl reminds us that true astanga yoga is about more than physical health; rather it includes ethical living, a disciplined mind and body, and openness to that which is larger than ourselves. Beryl presents this information in a conversational, friendly manner, similar to how she spoke at a workshop I recently attended. Asanas, of course, are at the core of this work, and BPY gives us a good overview of a mixed primary and secondary series of practice. However, BPY goes beyond the asanas by linking the chakras to the 8 limbs of astanga yoga practice as detailed in the Yoga Sutras. The section on pranayama is exceptional--she brings a relatively obscure practice down to earth in a way that reveals not only how to do it, but *why* it's important to practice in our lives. This is a book for those interested in the larger picture of yoga and how it fits into a spiritual/philosophical worldview of how to live rightly on this earth. Highly recommended for those who like to sweat but are ready for even more from their practice, as well as those from other hatha yoga traditions, if just to prove that astanga yoga is rooted in spirit as well as matter.』

(Thank you, BBB, for this powerful book!)
『First there was Power Yoga. I remember buying the book in 1996, intrigued by the cover. Once I started reading it, I could not put it down! A few months later, I went to a workshop Beryl, and her husband, Thom, gave in Chicago. What an incredible experience. What inspiring and open teachers! The sun and moon interchanging and shining brightly between them. When "Beyond Power Yoga" came out, I was one of the first in line to get it at the bookstore. I love it! It is quiet personal, heart-warming, and educational as well. Each book stands as a strong foundation on its own. Thank you, Beryl, for sharing so much joy, knowledge, and personal experience in yoga. Your tapes are wonderful too!』

(Beyond Power Yoga)
『I am greatly impressed by Birch's new book, "Beyond Power Yoga." I feel that she has managed to distill all of her experience and teaching skills into an incredibly well written text that is both very enjoyable to read and also very inspiring and personally challenging. Usually sequels are not as good as the original, but "Beyond Power Yoga" is an outstanding exception. I feel that it is truly an uncompromisingly honest piece of work.』
FROM SWEAT TOSAMADHI:The Path of ASTANGA YOGA

Beyond Power Yogapresents and explores thecompletejourney of the classicalastanga yogasystem, from power yoga to meditation and liberation. Bender Birch's first book, the groundbreakingPower Yoga, introduced one level ofastanga yogato mainstream America -- a high-heat, high-energy mind/body workout. Now,Beyond Power Yogapresents all eight levels, or limbs, of this ancient method -- a total practice for body and soul.

Drawing a parallel betweenastanga yoga's eight limbs and the mind/body energy centers(chakras)of Eastern philosophy, Bender Birch shows us how we can balance and heal our body, focus and relax our mind, amplify and direct our energy(prana),and ultimately reclaim our spiritual connection to Universal Consciousness. Each chapter offers specific practices to help the reader uncover and experience the insights of theastanga yogajourney.

  1. The YAMAS: Exploring the Fundamentals
  2. The NIYAMAS: Doing the Work
  3. ASANA: Practicing the Postures
  4. PRANAYAMA: Breathing Mindfully
  5. PRATYAHARA: Turning Inward
  6. DHARANA: Developing Concentration
  7. DHYANA: Experiencing Meditation
  8. SAMADHI: Living Joyfully

Presented in the down-to-earth illuminating style and inspiring voice of the author, illustrated with easy-to-follow photos, plus a specialwallchart of theasanasequences,Beyond Power Yogaoffers a short form of the dynamic mind/body power yoga method, then journeys through the deeper levels of spiritual practice.』
『Yoga poses, orasanas, are just part of a traditional yoga practice, although this fact has largely been overlooked by the masses who've taken up yoga in the past several years. Inastangayoga, for example, there are eight branches, or "limbs," of yoga that each correspond to a bodychakra, or energy center, which combine physical and spiritual activities to balance the energy of the body and mind. (The third limb encompasses the asanas familiar to most yoga students; the other limbs includepranayama, or mindful breathing;dharana, or concentration;dhyana, meditation; andsamadhi, living joyfully.)

Learning about the eight limbs inBeyond Power Yoga, Beryl Bender Birch's follow-up to her 1995 bestseller,Power Yoga, could have been a dry and almost scholarly project, but rather is thankfully as rejuvenating as a Hawaiian yoga retreat. Birch's writing style is at once confident and soothing, and often humorous. A prime example is her explanation of the yoga concept of dharma (if you follow your dharma, you're following your universal path, or calling). Birch was newly married and mourning the passing of her dog. She was "just looking" at the pound for a Siberian husky and saw "in the flesh, the very dog I had been 'seeing' and searching for--thoroughly gorgeous, completely show quality, perfect markings, fit, strong, outgoing and very friendly, but totally wild. The dog came bounding over to me and jumped into my arms, all fifty pounds of him. There was no question God wanted me to have this dog." There was also an older, matted, underweight, crabby husky there too, which she couldn't bear to leave. So she bought both of them from the pound for $17.43, but then spent $400 at the veterinarian to have them dewormed and immunized. She and her husband needed that money for rent, and he lambasted her for her irresponsibility. The day their rent was due, they received a $400 gift from a former student, thanking the Birches for ridding him of his back pain. Birch says that the thought never occurred to her that the rent money would be a problem: "If I had been plugged into the perception that it was going to take a long time to get that $400 back, then it would have taken a long time to get the $400 back, and I could never have had those dogs."

Beyond Power Yogaincludes dozens of photographs of Birch demonstrating basic asanas, including the Sun Salutation series, but for the reader looking for a full "power yoga" workout to get you good and sweaty, her first book will still be a necessity. But beginning- through advanced-yoga practitioners serious about using yoga as a path to self-fulfillment should find the information inBeyond Power Yogato be positively life altering.--Erica Jorgensen

(The symbols of Hatha Yoga)

Lovely artistic interpretation of asana that only comes to light when one has fully embraced the practice.Nicely organized and detailed enough to explore one asana and how our mind reacts in that asana.
The copy I have has a front cover that has symbols on it rather than the person in posture, and I think that is a better reflection of the books content. camella Nair - Author of Aqua Kriya Yoga』

(Yoga to Reflect On)
『I thought hatha yoga, the asanas, was about the body. Then I picked up this book and found out that the poses have a much richer purpose than making my body feel good. I tried just standing in the Mountain pose, just standing still going nowhere as Swami Radha suggests. Oh, I thought, that's easy, probably too easy. What does it feel like to stand still? Just standing there. I can do that! Ten seconds later my foot's tapping the floor. And my mind's thinking, thinking, thinking--I got things to do--I can't just stand here.

That was when I began to understand how the asanas reveal what my mind is doing. I've tried several of them now using Swami Radha's suggestions for reflection. Balancing on one leg in the Tree, asking, Can I bend like the willow or do I stand rigid like the oak? I waver and suddenly realize I'm hanging on, gritting my teeth. Bending forward in the Tortoise, looking for that quiet place within, I feel sheltered, protected, safe, and my body eases itself deeper into the pose. It likes this place. So does my mind. Triangle, reflecting on the cave of the heart. What are the three steps to the sanctuary? Patience, maybe? Compassion? The words start to flow, words to reflect on, words to think deeply about.

The way my body does the pose tells me what my mind is like.

This book takes hatha yoga to deep places inside. It's been a revelation to me.』

(Hatha Yoga and mind-body connections)
『This book is an amazing resource for taking your hatha practice deeper, not in the body, but in the mind. It has clear instructions about how to work with an asana and how to really use it to learn about yourself, beyond the body, into the mind and spirit. As a physical therapist, a Somatics practioner and a yoga teacher I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in taking their hatha to a new level of understanding.』

(Hatha Yoga: The Hidden Language)
『Sometimes my body feels like it's speaking in tongues. That tight shoulder, the pain in my lower back - what does it mean? What is my body trying to tell me? Originally published in 1988, Hatha Yoga: The Hidden Language details Swami Radha's systematic approach to understanding the symbolism of the asanas and messages from the body.

I first encountered Hidden Language a couple of years ago during a morning Hatha Yoga class at an ashram. I was surprised when the instructor asked us to pull out our journals and write words we associate with trees before we lifted into the Tree pose. We came out of the pose and reflected further on the tree as a symbol, and then the instructor posed questions: Where are your roots? What nourishes you? We went into the pose again, reflecting on the questions and being receptive to insights. It seemed so mysterious and yet obvious: Hatha Yoga asanas are based on real, tangible things - trees, flowers, birds, structures. Of course these physical forms have the potential to function as metaphors as well.

"Hidden Language Hatha Yoga is both deeply personal and brilliantly universal," writes ascent columnist Swami Lalitananda in her introduction to the new edition. "Through attention to the symbolism of the asanas, we can discover layers of meaning and make connections that change our lives. Because we are listening to the body, our reflections take on an honesty and reality that the mind can't deny."

After that initial class, I bought the Hidden Language book and have worked with it on a regular basis. The questions and reflections on the poses have helped me translate the discordant dialogue between my body and mind. My copy of the book is dog-eared and covered in notes - this new edition is to be released just in time.

It's difficult to make a good thing better, but this new edition is a vast improvement on the original. Much remains the same: each chapter is a different asana, with twenty-two altogether - basics such as Tadasana (the mountain), Matsyasana (the fish) and Garudasana (the eagle) - and they are presented in the same order.

There are some new additions as well. The line drawings have been replaced by the artful photography of Derek Shapton. This is not to say that the changes are merely cosmetic - the new edition is much more user-friendly. The bibliography is updated and appendices on mantra, Kundalini Yoga and other spiritual practices have been added.

I am still trying to decipher the secret code of my body, and Hatha Yoga: The Hidden Language is an excellent guide. This book will satisfy long-time practitioners of Hidden Language Hatha Yoga and introduce a new generation of yogis to a brilliant approach to the deeper meaning and full potential of Hatha Yoga.』

(What Yoga Poses Do For You Emotionally)
『I loved this book, took lots of notes, and review it often. It provides things to think about in yoga poses, symbolism and possibilities. Great book! Covers about 12 poses.』
『Long considered essential reading for Hatha Yoga students and teachers, the revised 20th anniversary edition of Hatha Yoga: The Hidden Language presents 22 classical Hatha asanas with in-depth investigations into their symbolic natures. Swami Sivananda Radha explores the mythological meaning of each posture as she encourages the hatha yogi to stretch beyond the physical. Building on the classical foundations of an ancient tradition, Swami Radha brilliantly synthesizes the ancient wisdom of yoga with an understanding of psychological and spiritual facets of contemporary life. With this approach, one can penetrate the mystical messages of the asanas so that the body is truly understood as a spiritual tool. It was twenty years ago when Swami Radha first introduced the transformational Hidden Language method to students interested in going deeper with their practice. Now, with expanded instructions on how to incorporate the Hidden Language method into a personal practice, beautiful photographs by Derek Shapton and an introduction by ascent columnist, Swami Lalitananda, the 20th anniversary edition of HLHY is essential reading for the serious student of yoga.“This book contains the insights of an extraordinary woman who dared to look deeper into the practice of asana to experience wholeness, which is the essence of yoga." – Sharon Gannon, co-founder of the Jivamukti Yoga method “Swami Radha's book has been on my bookshelf since it was first published. The language of yoga, as spoken by Swami Radha, speaks to my heart.” – Amy Weintraub author and yoga teacher』

(I LOVE it! And I've been practicing yoga for over 20 years.)
『I've had many yoga teachers over the past 22 years - but Jan Baker is the best one yet. What I enjoy most is having a regular schedule of postures. Having this book is like having my own private instructor right in the comfort of my home. I get together with 3 friends every Sat. morn. We really love the meditations, too. This is the best book I ever had on yoga.』

(Definately 5 stars! Exceptionally Good)
『This book was recommended to me by my yoga teacher. But now, I feel as though I have TWO yoga teachers! As I read the book and do the postures I feel as though Jan Baker is right with me, guiding me through each step. And I love her meditations at the end of each lesson. I've been a follower of yoga for many years and have read numerous books on the subject...but never one that encompassed every aspect of yoga. Ms Baker's book is extremely precise. I love the way it's written...as thought it's just for me alone. It's a book that will benefit beginners...all the way up to yoga teachers (like mine)!』
『For anyone intimidated by crowded yoga classes, complicated textbooks, headstands, or simply touching their toes, YOGA FOR REAL PEOPLE offers a year of classes that progress from beginning to intermediate to advanced levels of practice. A down-to-earth guide for yoga teachers and students alike, this book is illustrated throughout with more than 160 photographs correctly demonstrating 100 poses.』

(important text for understanding tantra)
『This is perhaps one of the most important texts to truly grasp the deep insights of tantric yoga. Frawley provides a clear and lucid path to understanding the role of the Goddess in Yoga, Tantra and Ayurveda and lights the way for the reader to awaken the Goddess in their own hearts and minds. If you are seeking to delve beyond the surface, this is the text that will provide the key!』

(Body = Art)
『While some people may argue that this is just a 'vanity' book, the pictures within will convince all that the body is an amazing piece of art. David Life and Sharon Gannon, owners of the immensely popular Jivamukti Studio (http://www.jivamuktiyoga.com/) in New York, contort their bodies in ways that are truly mind-boggling. The photos are shot in black and white - alternating between playful and intense moods. If you are a fan of Life or Gannon, this book is a tribute to their mastery of yoga.

For those of us who just enjoy yoga, this is art - pure and simple. For those who are not familiar, the pictures may be intimdidating or a curiosity.』

(Tribute/Art -Must have for yogi's)
『This is a wonderful book of inspiration, fantastic photography&art. But mainly is a tribute to David&Sharon Gannon's life's work. What a beautiful&original way to document a life dedicated to yoga! Any yogi would miss out by not having this fabulous book in their library. Truly a work of art.』

(Beautiful Book ...)
『Very nice and well done photos of Sharon and David. Motivating. A great piece of art. R.』

(Art of Yoga? Should be The Art of Vanity)
『The photos are indeed beautiful,(kudos to Martin Brading) but overall the book left a bad taste in my mouth upon realizing that this book is more a testament to the authors than to the testament of the art of yoga. The beauty that comes from the art of yoga is its transformative magic - not just physical transformation, but spiritual transformation. It's difficult to see that when the pictures are pretty much just glamor shots.

(Yoga Is Art, and this shows The Art of Yoga)
『This book is awesome! They are two of the most wonderful and influential yoga teachers in the West, and they're showing that yoga can be fun. The text is so touching and I use it for a "quote guide", pulling some of the beautiful sayings out for everyday notes and letters. I've bought a copy for everyone I know who practices yoga, including myself. It's a refreshing change from the many textbooks available. I recommend it to anyone wishing to perk up their coffee table.』
『A beautiful and inspirational book, The Art of Yoga presents stunning images that capture more than 100 asanas (physical postures) as exhibited by two of the world's best known and most respected teachers of the discipline. The Jivamukti Yoga method is a style of yoga created by Sharon Gannon and David Life in 1984. It is a vigorously physical and intellectually stimulating practice leading to spiritual awareness. The name jivamukti means "liberation while living." Jivamukti is one of the nine internationally recognized styles of Hatha Yoga. Gannon and Life have taught such high-profile celebrities as Sting, Madonna, and Christy Turlington, and literally thousands of students regularly attend classes at the Jivamukti Yoga Center in downtown Manhattan. The Art of Yoga represents the culmination of an almost ten-year collaboration by the authors with noted British-born photographer Martin Brading. As each of the magnificent black-and-white images captures the physical intricacy of the position, a brief accompanying text crystallizes its spiritual essence through texts from the Sanskrit.』
