(The Yoga of Discipline)
『This book didn't say too much about how to achieve discipline of the senses, it just said to do it. But learning to use the word discipline was helpful. EDIT, several days later. This poor rating is my fault and not the book's. I got an email prompting me to rate the book and I wasn't but about half way through it. I'm edgy about deleting emails and so I wrote the review too soon, I retract that opinion. It is very helpful with eating issues. By saying that nobody ever died from a little starvation but lots of people have died from overeating, this book has helped me with overeating. It gets much better in the second half, I love it. My previous bad review is my bad. signed Lisa, not John』

(A classic of Yoga)
『This is one of my favorite books of all time destined to be one of
the all time classics on Yoga. I not only learnt a lot from this book but also found the teachings life transforming.
Highly recommended!!』

(This is a great book!!!!)
『The chapter on eating is absolutely essential for anyone with food issues. It's a totally spiritual approach to eating and food that has changed my life, and my health. Don't be fooled by the word "discipline." Gurumayi is a yogi and when she talks about discipline it has nothing to do with harsh restrictions or anything like that. With food, for example, she talks about its sacredness, and how it is a form of God. One of her main teachings is that God dwells within everyone and she goes into an explanation of how when we eat we are actually feeding God within us. She presents the body as a temple of God, something that's sacred because of that and so it's important to treat the body with the highest respect. Eating, she says, is an incredibly sacred act. Food itself is sacred. This is such an uplifting and life-changing book for me. Since reading it I have come to respect my body and take care of it. I've changed my dietery habits and feel much better about the way I eat, what I eat. I'm more conscious. I highly recommend this book.』

(Wow!)
『This is an excellent book which not only shows you the sweetness of the Yoga of Discipline but that makes you believe in your own capacity of becoming the person you've always wanted to be! Very practical, very inspiring, very helpful! I loved it!』
In this collection of 14 talks on yogic discipline, Gurumayi Chidvilasananda discusses discipline in seeing, hearing, eating, speaking, and thinking.

(Iyengar Yoga)
『A very good book about Iyengar Yoga geared toward women and their special needs. The best yoga to practice as a beginner!』

(Gem for Women by Geeta Iyengar)
『This book really is a gem. It has basic information for all women in all their life stages. From Puberty to Menopause, Geeta lays a foundation for a sound and healthy yoga practice which can help ladies everywhere connect to their own inner Goddess. This is an important contribution to any yogini's (or male yoga teacher) library.』

(Great resource for women...somewhat hard to navigate the descriptions and photos of asanas)
『This book is a great resource for women. The only problem is that the photos of the asanas and their descriptions are in different parts of the book and you have to use the index to find them. Still, I heartily recommend it. Has good sections on how to adjust your practice during pregnancy, menstruation, for different hormonal imbalances, etc.』

(a must have for yoga teachers)
『If you teach or are serious about yoga and are a woman, get this book. The Iyengar name continues to never disappoint. Its a great reference book when you are finished reading.』

(A great tool for beginners)
『I first got this book from the library when I was waiting to have surgery for uterine growths. I had never done yoga, and I was looking for a way to ease my pain. This book can actually help with many mild medical conditions. It is set up in an easy to reference way, with lots of pictures and clear, detailed descriptions. Many of the positions even have 2 possible methods, one for the novice, and one for the advanced student. This is great when you are first starting out and you lack flexibility.
My favorite thing about the book is that it allows you to look up positions by name and by function. If you want to ease back pain, or just get more flexibility in your back, you can reference moves that aid the spine. There are even suggestions for building a routine.
I highly reccomend this book.』

『Yoga, A Gem for Women presents a detailed, practical guide for the yoga student who wants to go deeper with her practice of Hatha Yoga. The book is divided into three sections that create an integrated path of yoga suitable for both the beginner and advanced student:

Theory--Yoga and Women
A natural bridge to health and well-being
Practice--Knowing Your Body
Techniques and benefits of over 80 asanas complete with photographs and detailed instructions
Experience--On the Threshold of Peace
Relaxation, breathing and the practice of meditation』

(great qigong manual)
『As a long time practitioner of qigong, I have never been a fan of Mantak Chia's work; I found his books to be too scattered, and difficult to piece together. Yudelove manages to take Chia's system, and not only make it understandable, but also make it safe by adding the element of timing and systematic practice.

This book is clearly written, fun to read, and packed full of good info. The only caution would be that I would not recommend it for beginners; I think that many of the practices are outside the beginning level ability to feel what all those metaphors are talking about. It is a supurb text for those who have some level of development-- this is the difference between high school and 300 level college credits.

All things said and done, this is the best book on the subject matter I have ever read. For better beginning texts, I would check out "opening the energy gates of your body" by B.K. Frantzis, and "the way of energy."』

(A book for Cultivation of Sexual Energy and Much More)
『Erick Yudelove has been a student of Mantak Chia. He has put together a manual for practice that encompasses the information that could be found in Mantak Chia's books, but is further enhanced, clarified and perhaps simplified by Yudelove's own discoveries.

The book covers some basic practices from Taoist Alchemy such as Six Healing Sounds, Microcosmic Orbit, Inner Smile and some forms of breathing before proceeding with sexual practices. The book also includes the practices related to the Fusion of the Five Elements, Bone Marrow and Standing Chi Kung.』

(VERY DETAILED - Excellent Descriptions)
『Yudelove did a great job bringing this info to the West. There is so much info and history and understanding in this book, that I can confidently recommend it to any of my Nei Gung or Nei Jia friends or students. Presented more like a workbook than a book makes this book a great training tool. No need to say more.

(Brilliant !)
『This is a unique book, a step-by-step tutor to higher levels of Taoist Spiritual Alchemy given in a systematic way. The final God and Goddess exercise is the best technique I have come across - yet it appears as a result from all 14 weeks' exercises woven into an extremely efficient method which puts us in contact with higher forces of the Universe. The books seems like a summary of Mantak Chia's reachings, but in fact it is not. It is a real breakthough.

Just an advice - the book may be used by beginners, but I recommend potential practitioners to start with the "100 Days" book by the author. The Golden Flower will make things REALLY work.』

(Just excellent)
『When I bought this yoga book, I didn't have much expectations other than to learn the various poses properly. So, I was pleasantly surprised to find such a delightful yoga book. It is reader friendly and, while aimed at those who have no background on yoga, it does not dumb down the principles of yoga at all. It explains in a nonsensical and in a neutral tone what yoga is and the instructions on the poses are clear. It has suggested sample practices to help guide the reader in eventually building their own practice. I love the huge photos to supplement the instructions. Best of all, while it is larger than most books (hence the larger photos), it is not too thick or heavy for me to carry around. I've even brought it to ski resorts so I can practice.』

(Start with this as a basic reference)
『An excellent starter book. An emphasis on an enjoyable practice that complements and enhances one's life. Great photos. A thorough, well-rounded introduction to yoga. Start with this and then go on to books that are more specialized.』

(Great Yoga Book!)
『I am a Yoga teacher, and I recommend this book for home practice. The point of Yoga is to turn inward, and really feel what your body is doing, and what your body needs. In classes, we tend to get competitive, which really hinders our practice. This book is a great way to learn poses to do at home, and without having someone there yapping at you the entire time, you tend to really FEEL the poses. I think classes are important to learn postures and how the corrected posture feels, but I encourage people to have a home practice as well. This book is wonderful.... big pictures makes it easy to use while practicing, and a few different series of Asana's in the back help guide you through an at home class. The basic meditation helps people start to understand how to quiet the mind, and the Chakra info is wonderful! Namaste!』

(A Good Yoga Book for Home Practice)
『This is my one of my favorite yoga books... it explains about lines of energy, chakras, the different types of yoga and Hatha Yoga, and of course, is full of some basic poses. It also includes some sequences for different occasions, included the classic Sun Salute. The nice thing about this book is that it also has clearly explained breathing exersizes, and what the do. It also has a nice intro to meditation, and includes severla different meditatoin techniques to introduce you to this idea. Of course, if you don't take classes, you SHOULD start taking them, and even if you do, this book will help you with your own at home rutine. Overall, a good little book.』

(yoga is a lifestyle)
『if you understand that the asanas are a very small part of what true yoga is, you will love or at least like this book. foremost it is a biography of the writers' journey through yoga- if you are strictly looking for an instructional guide, this is not it. the negative reviews on this book bother me. the poetry in it is beautiful- this book was meant to inspire people to look at their emotional and mental development instead of their physical development.』

(Great yoga book for those new to yoga.)
『The best way to describe the book, Yoga: The Poetry of the Body, is as a conversational dialogue between Rodney Yee and Nina Zolotow, a writer and yoga student of Rodney's. She asks Rodney questions about yoga, his classes, and life in general, to which Rodney responds. The book also includes poetry chosen by Rodney as well as short stories written by Nina.

As someone new to yoga, I really enjoyed this book. The conversational dialogue really helps address a lot of issues and fears that I think a very common with yoga.

The book is divided into six parts:

Part 1 Why - Basically a brief dialogue that addresses the question of why people practice yoga.

Part 2 Before You Practice - Rodney describes the tools of yoga, including an exploration of our own bodies through massage

Part 3 Falling Into Yoga - Rodney presents eight short yoga practices. The idea behind this section is that each practice has a theme and Rodney gives brief description of each pose. He deliberately chooses not to go into detail so that people will just "do" the practices and learn from their own body and observations. More detailed descriptions of the poses are given in Part 5.

Part 4 Being Present - This section of the book focuses on your breath and getting you to focus on it. Rodney gives seven breathing games. To quote Rodney,

"In a breath observation practice, you are trying to get into that same state of deep relaxation while still remaining conscious. It's like learning how to see all those odd fish in the deepest, darkest part of the sea-you need to be able to drop that far down into your own ocean. When it's that quiet, you can begin to see your breath."

Part 5 Posing and Reposing - This section provides detailed descriptions of the individual poses and also provides modifications and shows the use of props.

Part 6 Unwrapping It - Basically a couple of pages to summarize and provide an ending for the book.

There is also a priceless Appendix B: Yoga and Watermelons. LOL

I am really enjoying this book. As someone who has just discovered yoga in the last five months or so, this book is a great introduction to the idea of yoga and establishing a practice. I think yoga and yoga books can often be very intimidating to someone just starting out. This book directly addresses those fears and encourages you to just get out there and do it. I would highly recommend it for someone new to yoga.』

(Any book that begins with a quote by Emily Dickinson has to be good.)
『"If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry." --Emily Dickinson

I Love yoga! (--have since I did my first yoga vhs about five years ago though it feels like a lifetime, it's so natural for me.) This book is good for all yoga enthusiasts. Everyone will appreciate the photographs of Rodney's examples of each pose (although I think they should be larger) along with instructions of the poses and probably all who practice yoga should enjoy the conversations between Rodney and Nina Zolotow. In the section of part three, Why We Do Yoga, Rodney shares this: "For me their was an immediate emotional component to the practice of yoga. When I started practicing yoga, I felt like I was no longer ruled by my emotions. I felt like I still had emotions--very strong emotions--in fact, I could observe them more deeply--but I felt like I was no longer controlled by them, that I actually had a sense of choice and a sense of deeper understanding because I wasn't so emotionally reactive in my life."
We shouldn't be controlled by our emotions. I've learned this and let me tell you, it is wise and liberating.

One more quote by Rodney...

'I read an article in a newspaper that quoted the {} church as saying, "Yoga is dangerous because it clears the mind and leaves way for the devil." It clears the mind and leaves way for the devil. That's amazing to me, but in some sense, I realize people actually think that. We've actually been trained not to think. It's like in yoga class, people think it's about stilling the mind. It's not about stilling the mind. It's about following the mind. It's really about deeply following something. What we're doing is we're disciplining the mind so that it can continue to follow the present moment, watching things arise as they arise. Watching thoughts arise as they arise and actually being cognizant of life as it's arising. To really be in it--otherwise you're not living a life. You're living an illusion of life. You're actually disassociated from what's really going on....'
Hmmmm.

A worthy book to own to use to practice, appreciate and to understand yoga. My practice is something that will be with me forever. I realize now that it is so much a part of my life that I incorporate it into every workout routine I do, at some point! Even if I'm doing a video, I will either do yoga at the beginning or end 99% of the time! If you haven't tried yoga yet, please do! You won't regret it. You go at your own pace, and benefit and get more flexible with each effort. It is great for your body and your mind.
Soar!』

(A Mixed Bag - 3 Stars is a Stretch...)
『I was really looking forward to this book, as I've found Yee's videos (and Patricia Walden's as well) of great use for my practice. But this book was a real letdown. Apart from the photos (the best part), which would be perfect for anyone beginning a yoga practice, there's not much to recommend. The "interview" portions between Yee and Zolotow are totally unnecessary, if not outright annoying; it's more like a schmooze session between "student" and "master". C'mon, already. Isn't that what appearances on "Oprah" are for? And the poetry would be better left in a separate volume - they don't really give anything to the book. All put together, it comes off as a little too "Real Simple" if you know what I mean. For some reason, after reading about all of the interview portions I could stomach, I came away with Yee having this distinct "nobody understands yoga but me" attitude. It could be the way it was written, but it comes off as more than a little prissy. A little humility would be nice, you know? Thanks just the same, but I'd rather re-read the truly essential "Light on Yoga" by B.K.S. Iyengar - THAT'S the book you should buy. Check out Yee's videos for guidance, but buy this only if you want a good looking coffee table book.』

(Makes yoga accessible for everyone)
『I have been practicing yoga at home with videos for about 2 years from now, and Rodney Yee is my favorite instructor. However, I've heard some people criticize his videos as being too mystical or too fast-paced, especially for beginners. In this book, Yee makes yoga accessible to everyone in part by making HIMSELF accessible--ie, via the reprinted conversations with his co-author, Nina Zolotow. The interviews allow the reader to see Yee as a real person rather than the yogi "master" he is often considered to be (he even jokes about this title in the book!). Furthermore, although he does discuss Eastern influences in his own yoga practice, he places great emphasis on yoga being fun and enjoyable and encourages modifications rather than a strive for "perfect" form.

In addition to talking about his craft, Yee offers eight varied yoga practices appropriate for beginning students; each practice focuses on a theme, such as "falling" or "breathing." Beautifully simple black and white photographes of either Yee or his wife, Donna Fone, performing the poses accompany each practice. In the last section, "Posing and Reposing," each of the 45 poses utilized in the practices is photo-illustrated and described in detail. Although this book is aimed at beginners, it will stimulate the thought of any aspiring yogi. Highly recommended!』

Yoga is one of the hottest fitness trends today, and millions of people are looking to renowned yogi Rodney Yee for instruction. Fresh from a guest spot on Oprah where he taught yoga to the masses, Rodney Yee is well-known around the world and travels extensively both nationally and worldwide to teach weekend workshops, week-long teacher training workshops, and yoga retreats.

For the first time ever, Rodney Yee explains in writing his highly popular and successful approach to yoga. Yoga: The Poetry of the Bodyis an introduction to the practice of yoga in both its physical and spiritual aspects. Using more than 400 beautiful black-and-white photos, this book takes beginners, as well as more advanced students, step-by-step through 8 full yoga practices based on 45 of the most basic yoga poses. Using thought-provoking student-teacher dialogs, Rodney makes abstract concepts come alive, thereby allowing readers to better understand and appreciate the essence of yoga. All in all, this book presents a wonderful and stimulating journey into the world of yoga that reflects both the way Rodney teaches and his personal philosophy. It is sure to please yoga enthusiasts everywhere.

『Rodney Yee, named the "stud-muffin guru" byTimemagazine, is one of the most sought-after yoga instructors in the world, packing classrooms in Hawaii and California and selling millions of copies of his 17 videos.Yoga: The Poetry of the Bodyis his first book, and is as much a compendium of practical instruction on the most common poses as it is a dialogue on Yee's philosophy of yoga.

Yee decided to writeThe Poetry of the Bodyto give in-depth information that's impossible to include in his videos, and this is where the strength of the book lies. He delves into exquisite detail about the proper posture, breath work, and positioning for the 45 most common yoga asanas, devoting several step-by-step photos to each one. (However, sometimes the book goes overboard on the detail--there are more than 400 pictures, and the photo meant to illustrate where the groin is located is hardly necessary!) Yee includes eight yoga practices--the "playful practice," "relaxation practice," and those based on "grounding," "falling," "breath," "resistance," and "movement"--each a series of a dozen or so poses designed to help the reader "self-study" and discover the ways in which the mind and the body interact.

Although the poses in these "practices" are nothing out of the ordinary, Yee's incredibly muscular and supple physique may intimidate rather than inspire novice practitioners, and his sincere but frequently corny instructions on how to fully embrace the poses may well be a turn-off ("Surrender the seed of your body into the earth, water it, and let it blossom"). Diehard fans will also be disappointed that much of the book is devoted to the opinions and contemplative creative writing of his coauthor, Nina Zolotow, one of Yee's students.--Erica Jorgensen

(Book - line drawings are great!)
『It is easy to see how to do the various yoga poses from the line drawings. They are easy to use.』

(Good book)
『The practices are very short - the only caveat. Otherwise, if you've done yoga before, you can use this book as a reference guide to your own practice. I generally do sun salutes and then do one of the days depending on what I feel like doing - balance postures, strength, sitting.

Good variations - I use it a lot like an encyclopedia of postures.

Its proven good when I use it in combination to the her other book - Yoga in 15, 30, 60 90 mmins.』

(not for beginners)
『if you're a beginning yogi without any proper instructions beforehand, this books is not going to be helpful.
if you already know the proper way to do poses then it's a great addition.
i'm not blaming the book. a book is not the best way to teach yourself yoga.

but the pictures are surprisingly helpful and the instructions are straightforward.

(Cute and useful)
『I like this book in part because of the cute illustrations instead of real photos. Besides, there are captions in case you get confused. I try to "study" the lesson before doing it so that the flow doesn't get disturbed but i still have to refer back to the book. I guess that's true with any book - it isn't as easy as being in class and having someone verbally tell you what to do. I'm guessing it will get easier with practice. I would not recommend this book to a complete beginner as there are complicated inversions that I believe would require some supervision and mentoring in person. Also, it's easier to figure this stuff out if you've done it before. I'd suggest this if you've had a few months of yoga class and want some guidance to keep you at it. I was trying to keep doing yoga after I left my job with workplace yoga, but it wasn't as nice and flowing as a class. This book really motivates me to do yoga each day since there's a session for each day of the week - in binder/tab format.
Also, I made the mistake of buying it for $20 at the store - gee it's only $8 here!』

(Disappointed by the line art)
『We all know that Cyndi Lee is a guru in the industry. So, I was very disappointed that she chose not to use actual photos to depict poses and correct postures, but rather line art.』
『Too busy to attend yoga class but can't be bothered to read the endless instructions in the latest yoga book? InOM Yoga: A Daily Practice, celebrated yoga instructor Cyndi Lee brings the rigors and reqards of yoga class to the home with a totally unique method of teaching. Instead of wordy directiosn and minimal pictures, each series ofasanasis communicated entirely through easy-to-follow illustrations and tips. Monday is devoted to the Sun Salutation to welcome the week's start. Thursday's practice focusses on sitting poses, when the week's energy is dwindling. (GREAT)
『I have just about every kids yoga book out there. This was a great addition to my library however it is way too expensive!?? I am not sure it is worth $40 although it is a great book.』

(love this book)
『this book is filled with great ideas and tons of yoga info. i also love Jodi...the author!』

(Simply brilliant)
『Although the title put me off at first normally these kind of books are great in their simple concise explanations so I ordered it anyway.

I have to say it's an excellent book, I normally teach adults yoga and am just branching out into teaching children. However I am finding that I can take information from this book to use in beginners adult classes too as its simple, down to earth, no nonsense explanations of yoga make it a lot easier for students (at whatever age) to understand.

An absolute must if you would like to teach yoga to children.

(Great Info for Yoga Teachers)

(quite comprehensive)
『I thought this book was excellent--I'm using it with my four-year-old, who has learned all 5 yanas and is able to recite them. She loves doing the poses and it really changes her mood when she's grumpy. I only wish there were better pictures. Sometimes it is hard to follow the diirections with no pictures.』
