Finally I found this book, and immediately I could tell it had everything I had been looking for, in one place. This book gathers a huge wealth of information in one place.
I wasn't ready to fully commit when I bought the book, but I could tell it was worth having. Months later, after a lot of growth, I finally started. It has only been a month and a half, but this practice, along with a lot of self-inquiry in everyday life, has changed so much for me. I don't know what I would have done otherwise--would I have been stuck, like I was feeling when I finally committed? Yogani is clearly not an egoic guru and also offers a wealth of information for free on aypsite.org. Additionally, he is quick to respond to e-mail questions. It is so worth the price, it is a bargain for the massive wealth of information inside (and I am kind of cheap!).』
(No other Yoga book comes close) 『Simply put - this is the most comprehensive and easy-to-understand text on Yoga I've found yet. Everything is explained in both esoteric/spiritual and exoteric/anatomy-based manners. The chapters are arranged to lead the reader through their own practice, adding new techniques as one progresses. Yogani has clearly spent many years learning and practicing many style of yoga. Now he has compiled the best into one complete text.
Unfortuntaly his mini-book don't have the same power as this original AYP book.』
(The Real Deal) 『When I first read the reviews for Advanced Yoga Practices, I worried that they may have been faked since they were so glowing. I decided to buy the book anyway. It was a pleasure to discover that the book is even better than the reviews. Unlike much of the yogic/spiritual tradition that shrouds advanced techniques in secret, Yogani spells out yogic meditation practices from the basic to advanced, giving complete, easy to understand instructions. At the same time, he reminds readers that they must take responsibility for their own spiritual progress with respect to the advanced practices. To apply those methods before having the proper level of understanding and training can create problems. I suppose an analogy would be that you wouldn't ask 16-year old to drive a race car 200+ miles per hour when they are first learning to drive. That is a recipe for disaster. Rather you idle slowly about a parking lot or side road until you get the hang of driving a car. Similarly, Yogani introduces the basic meditation and breathing (pranayama) practices and gradually introduces more advanced techniques.
Since the lessons first originated with some website lessons, there are lots of questions and answers from seekers who have written him, and he gives very practical advice, and always reminds people to self-pace with respect to how deeply they delve into the more advanced practices. It is a very refreshing approach.
I have a large library of spiritual books, many of which did not deliver as much as I had hoped. That said, I would whole-hearted recommend Yogani's Advanced Yoga Practices to anyone who is very serious in their pursuit of meditation and advanced level practices.
P.S. May I add, that although I have purchased a ton of books from Amazon, especially in the spiritual genre, I have never written a review of a book. This book was so good, I felt compelled to write a review. I send my most sincere thanks to Yogani! 』
(You owe it to yourself) 『After reading these fine reviews I have nothing more to add other then to encourage you to join us on this marvelous spiritual adventure. We now have the tools to complete the journey, only the will remains. Thank you Yogani. Namaste』
(The Guru is in YOU!) 『Put your ego aside and follow this Path to self-fullment. Clear, concise and practical ancient methods of clearing out all of your past emotional and karmic baggage. For the beleivers in traditional Christianity, you will be surprised at the relationship between Jesus Christ and ancient Yoga. Yoga complements and enlightens all Beleifs and Yogani brings it to you in clear and easy to follow instructions. The most complete single book on escatic Yoga available....』 『FROM THE BACK COVER:

THIS IS NOT THE ALISTAIR TRANSLATION. And I highly resent being led to believe so, because I was really excited about getting that version for my kindle. THE REVIEWS YOU ARE READING ABOUT IT ARE FOR THE ACTUAL ALISTAIR SHEARER TRASLATION. The hard cover, paper and ink book that says translated by Alistair Shearer Not this digital impostor.
This is just another boring, academic and dry translation. I think you can get the same thing through Wikipedia or Google books for free, which makes me wonder if the poster is even the real author. Sigh. Maybe I can email Alistair's publisher and get them to do the actual book for kindle. And whoever did this: shame on you and picture your mother looking cross and waving her finger at you.』
(Perfect Condition, quick and efficient!!) 『This book was in perfect condition, came to me quickly and was very well done by amazon. Thanks.』
(Fabulous) 『You can tell from the very beginning that this translation was done by someone who personally understands the meaning of the sutras. And the introduction itself is worth the price of the book -- it's a perfect primer for anyone wanting to learn more about the mysterious path to the Divine.』
(Pocket Book for the Yoga Sutras) 『I've read the Yoga Sutras of Patajali by Sri Swami Satchidananda and found that book to be a much more detailed description of sutras. This book is very brief, which may a good introduction but I've found it to be much less useful. If you are looking for a deep understanding of the sutras, I'd recommend a book with more content.』
(The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali....translated by Alistair Shearer) 『This is an enlightening translation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. This book is easy to read and contemplate on. The English word choices are thoughtful and consistent. Mr. Shearer also writes a wonderful introduction to the translated text. I once attended a philosophy lecture on Yoga by a college professor who claimed mastery of Tantric Yoga and the Sanskrit language. During lecture, he commented that the Sutras of Patanjali were difficult and "certainly not bed time reading material." I couldn't have disagreed more with the Professor knowing that Mr. Shearer's translation is easy to read, assimilate, and makes wonderful reading anytime night or day, as I have done many, many times. I recommend this translation to my Yoga students and I also give it as gifts. Enjoy!』 『
One of yoga's most important and influential works, this classicforms a keystone of Indian philosophical and religious thought. The eight-step path to Raja Yoga consists of restraint, observances, posture, breath control, sublimation, attention, concentration, and meditation. This volume contains complete sutras, along with a commentary by Veda-Vyasa and explanations by Vachaspati-Miçra.

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (handy addition to your yoga collection) 『i teach pilates classes but like to add yoga moves into my classes. this book provides excellent step by step instructions for many poses. i like the clear drawings, unlike the other poster i actually prefer drawings because pictures can sometimes look outdated. this book feels current and "fresh". the book is small, i can trhow it in my gym bag for a quick reference.
the only enhancement i would have liked is to have each pose provide a brief statement on the benefits or parts of the body worked. as an instructor i really value that information and being able to pass it on to my students』
(Tiny, but chock-full!) 『I've found this very useful: for travel, for a quick reminder of a pose, for inspiration. In addition to being a great How-To, it gives loads of information that I haven't gotten in classes, including wonderful explanations for physical and inner effects of, and safety precautions for, poses.
The "Yoga Speak" and "Be Mindful" sidebars are wonderful bite-sized bits of information. And the illustrations are the clearest, most elegant I've ever seen!』
(Take this along on your next trip) 『This book is not intended as an instructional book for beginners, nor as your sole source of yoga instruction. It is meant as a reference guide for those who are already studying yoga in some capacity (you'll find it useful whether you're taking your first class or your twentieth) and who would like a guide to the poses, or asanas, for use when they aren't at class and don't have an instructor to guide them. This little book is also perfect for taking along to the office or on a trip.
While yoga is an extremely gentle form of exercise, doing it wrong (like any exercise) can be dangerous. So if you want to continue your practice away from home or class, it can be invaluable to have a guide to remind you of how exactly to do it. Also, with such a guide you won't be limited to the five or ten poses you can most easily remember. This book has a total of 108, and includes the Sun Salutation and several practices (series of poses to use as a single workout).
Each chapter (chapters are divided by type of pose, such as inverted poses or backbends) starts off with general alignment instructions and cautions; be certain to read these even if you're sure you know what you're doing. Additional cautions are sometimes included in small boxes next to individual poses. This to me is always a sign of a good yoga instructor who is mindful of the possible difficulties and medical issues of her charges.
This book gets into some very difficult poses, which makes it a reference you'll be able to use throughout your yoga experience. I do wish it had included more indication of which poses were more advanced and should wait until later, although if you assume that you should not practice any pose in this book until you've done it at least once in a class, then you'll be fine--and again, since this book is meant as a companion and reference guide, that would be appropriate.
One particularly useful aspect to this book is that it includes "preparation" poses for some of the more difficult postures, which can also be used as substitution poses if you don't yet possess the physical capability to perform a posture.
Despite some very minor imperfections (I prefer photos to drawings, although these are good drawings), this book serves as an excellent reference work. It's perfect for those who are at any stage of their yoga practice, and want a simple guide to the asanas to take with them wherever they might need it.』 『Don’t just sit there!
Yoga can be practiced anywhere, but no one wants to lug around a full-sized, soup-to-nuts book. The solution: a book of poses and a few routines to enable one to practice at work, on a business trip, or while vacationing.
• Includes more than 108 illustrated yoga poses for home, office, and travel, with concise explanations for what each pose achieves • In India, 108 is considered a sacred number • Features routines that utilize the poses •ABC Newsreports that 16.5 million Americans practice yoga—an increase of 43% since 2002 • Medical practitioners are now using yoga as a therapeutic tool to deal with carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive stress injuries』

By simply reading it you can get cured of various misunderstandings about the nature of your mind and incorrect reasoning. Through binding the ancient Indian way of understanding mind processes with the modern psychology of Western kind it widens the horizons of modern psychology and psychotherapy - which since is no more binded and kept away from the spiritual sheath.』
(Yoga and Psychotherapy) 『A highly insightful discussion of the relationship between the two. A pleasure to read and essential for any psychotherapist interested in more than 'the surface'.
』
(An extraordinary synthesis of Eastern and Western thinking) 『It's easy to get overwhelmed in the study of the structure of consciousness. We can start with the symbolic and highly poetic images from the Bhagavad Gita and Rumi. We can plunge into the esoteric, nearly impenetrable treatises on the arcane aspects of yoga and meditation with all the chakras and sheaths and such. We can lose ourselves in the wealth of western psychological advice about self-actualization, avoiding neurotic behavior, and disciplining our self-talk. We can vicariously sit in on those immensely profound conversations with Krishnamurti, trying to learn from his cool, intellectual analysis of the real and the unreal.
But the question remains. How can these wildly divergent sources of help be woven together into a comprehensible whole?
One way is to get two swamis and a western-trained medical doctor together to create a blended presentation of all these traditions. That is exactly what this book provides.
The authors describe how they worked through their own confusion, often staying up all night in the process. The result is "a comprehensive theory of personal evolution which incorporates the best of both systems [east and west]."
I thank them for overcoming their confusion because the book helps me overcome mine. This book is dense and challenging, but it rewards the hard work of anyone who studies it diligently. I recommend it highly.』
(Enlightening Concepts) 『If you have ever tried to conceptualize the difference between the brain and the mind this book will be of great interest. I was also fascinated with the author(s) description of the psychotic, the nuerotic, and the mystic. I believe this book will be appreciated by anyone who has enjoyed studying psychology and wants to continue the study as it progresses after the achievement of a healthy ego.』 『Provides and in-depth analysis of Western and Eastern models of the mind and their differing perspectives.』

(Terrific resource) 『I have enjoyed the benefits of yoga for several years, guided by excellent teachers. After moving to a new city, I found that I was ready to pass on some of what I know, by starting to teach. This book has been a terrific find -- reminding me to look with fresh eyes at things that I had once learned in class or in workshops which had since become "automatic". I found the writing, illustrations and photographs clear and useful, with enough detail to support good practice. The examples of "misaligned forms" are also wonderfully clear for the novice -- with a colleague or a mirror, an independent student could make good and safe progress. It is a valuable complement to the other books on my Yoga shelf.』
(Excellent Intro to Yoga&Yoga Zone) 『I am a rank beginner when it comes to yoga--I didn't even think about it until last year and just started taking classes this year (2001). This book provides a good introduction to Yoga Zone's brand of yoga--a mixture of three types: Hatha yoga (a physical form of yoga), Tantra yoga (a more philosophical form of yoga) and Ayurveda yoga (a healing form of yoga). The section on breath and breathing (an important part of yoga and life in general) is great and the descriptions and illustrations of the various postures are quite helpful (and take up the bulk of the book). Finger and Bingham have a very personable style of writing that makes it seem you are being spoken to, rather than reading a book.』
(Excellent for beginners...) 『like me! Completely new to the yoga scene, I saw this listed in the "Editor's Picks" as one of the top yoga books and decided to buy it based solely on that. And I don't regret it. Alan Finger takes you not only on an informative and practical journey into the world of yoga, but a gently spiritual one as well.
The book is nice quality, with easy-to-read pages and beautifully illustrated poses. I like how he emphasizes substance over form i.e. you don't have to *look* perfect to have a perfect yoga practice. It's the approach and the inner work that goes with it that matters the most.
The form he teaches (ISHTA) is an amalgamation of different yoga "schools", developed by he and his father(a master yogi) and taught in their Yoga Zone studios. He gives a 20 min. practice and a 40 minute regimen, with the option to customize it later when you feel more adept and comfortable.
As for me, I already have all the poses for the 20 minute series marked in red, pages bookmarked, and I plan to get the video tape as well, to get even more benefit from seeing it in action. So, if you're a beginner like me, this seems like a great place to start and I highly recommend it. Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll practice more of that "ujjayi pranayama" breathing... ;)』
(Excellent book!) 『This book was wonderful, easy to understand, and perfect for beginners as well as seasoned yogis and yoginis. As a yoga teacher, I find myself referring to this book while teaching my class. It's a great way to get yourself started in yoga, and keep you strong and flexible.』 『Let the modern authority on yoga guide you on the most important journey you'll ever take.
As people search for inner peace amid increasingly hectic lives, the practice of yoga continues to gain popularity. Yoga means to yoke, or to bring together, the various aspects of the self -- body, mind, and spirit -- and while the physical and mental benefits of yoga are truly astounding, to many people the idea of yoga is intimidating. In fact, nothing could be easier than starting a yoga practice, andYoga Zone Introduction to Yogais the perfect guide.
In the first section, Yoga Master Alan Finger offers a brief history of the different types of yoga and how they are practiced in the West, including an explanation of the ISHTA yoga that Alan created and that is taught at Yoga Zone. You'll learn about the benefits of yoga and how to prepare for a practice with different breathing exercises. Next Alan outlines two series of beginner postures, accompanying each pose with detailed instructions on how to achieve it, along with tips and modifications for various fitness levels. All the exercises are fully illustrated and the text is instructional yet friendly, in the tradition of a Yoga Zone studio class. Following the postures, there's a special section on relaxation and meditation, cornerstones of any yoga practice. Packed with personality and full of valuable information,Yoga Zone Introduction to Yogawill introduce you to a life of unlimited possibilities and infinite joy.』
IPhone 3G used's review (Important but overlooked classic) 『It remains surprising that so few Westerners have translated or commented on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, which play a significant role in the transition from a more primitive Hinduism to a mature Vedantaism. Translations are not difficult (these sutras are one-line aphorisms) but capturing the essence and understanding the context is essential. Of existing translations with commentary, Taimni's has the virtue of scholarship, even objectivity. He understands the highest achievements of his author and of the Vedanta tradition. Still, it is a large, even ponderous book, written in big block paragraphs that run to wordiness and repetition. There is no historical or bibliographical apparatus, and the novice will be quickly put off. But Patanjali is important enough to pursue, and this is, with all its shortcomings, the best available version.』
(It is the best book on the yoga sutras) 『Taimni was a biochemist and his scientific viewpoint helps aid Westerners to understand the subtleties of Patanjali's yoga sutras. The author also starts each sutra with the Sanskrit and the translation before the commentary. He even includes diagrams to help the reader. The yoga sutras are a roadmap to spiritual progress. Taimni makes them exciting and useful to yoga practitioners and meditators, no matter if they are beginners or advanced. A sample set of quotes on pranayama are: "Deep breathing has nothing to do with Pranayama", "Real Pranayama begins when the breath is stopped for some time between inhalation and exhalation." For the advanced meditator who is interested in the last three stages of the eight fold path (dharana, dhyana, and samadhi), Taimni's commentary shows he is well-versed in those states of mind. For example, "In practicing Dharana, it is found that as the depth of abstraction increases and the grip over the mind becomes stronger, the frequency with which the distractions appear becomes smaller." The last half of the yoga sutras dwells on the advanced states of samadhi (including samyama) and here Taimni shines with detailed advice, unlike most other authors of similiar commentaries. "When the Yogi performs Samyama on any quality his mind becomes one with that quality for the time being as has been explained in I-41. The positive qualities like courage, compassion, etc. are not vague nebulous things as they appear to the lower mind but real, living, dynamic principles of unlimited power which cannot manifest fully in the lower worlds for lack of adequate instruments." For me, Taimni's Science of Yoga has been a life-long companion and a handbook to higher consciousness.』 『Patanjali's Yoga-sutras is considered to be the most authoritative treatise on Yoga. Condensed in one hundred and ninety-six aphorisms or sutras are the essential philosophy and technique of Yoga. Over the centuries, scholars and teachers of Yoga have attempted to expand these sutras with commentaries and explanations. This is a comprehensive work giving the text of the Yoga-sutras in Sanskrit, transliteration in Roman, followed by a translation and commentary. It covers the fields of evolution, the unfoldment of consciousness, the practical approach to a spiritual way of life, the unravelling of the great mystery of existence, and the culminating experience of samadhi, the goal of the kingly science of Yoga. Presents to the serious student the fundamental teachings of Yoga, its science, philosophy and technique, in the light of modern thought.』

(A Socratic approach to yoga) 『This is an unusual book in the yoga tradition. The reader should not expect to find a systematic treatment of yoga topics but rather a distillation of many hours of constant dialogue between an advanced yoga teacher and his mentor. The book reads like Plato's Dialogues, but here, it is the student who asks the questions. Questions (there are more than 250) and answers are grouped around six major topics: philosophy, asanas, Pranayama, meditation, yoga therapy, and everyday life. Given the large amount of subjects covered, the authors direct the reader to the proper sources where they can obtain more detailed information on the topic. The reader can benefit from a well presented index of Sanskrit and English terms and can jump back and forth through the text as an observer; by doing this, the reader can make some technical stops, consult additional sources, and record additional questions that eventually would be sent to the authors for a subsequent volume. Ramaswami (born in 1939) spent more than three decades studying with T. S. Krishnamacharya (1888-1998), tutor of K. Pattabhi Jois, Indra Devi, B. K. S. Iyengar, and T. K. V. Desikachar, and is considered the greatest exponent of yoga in modern times. Ramaswami is the author of Yoga for the Three Stages of Life (2000) and the best-seller The Complete Book on Vinyasa Yoga (2005).
David Hurwitz teaches yoga in Los Angeles and has a teacher training certificate from the American Viniyoga Institute. In 1990 Hurwitz began studying the yoga tradition of Krishnamacharya with A.G. Mohan (Chennai, formerly known as Madras, India) and Gary Kraftsow, but when he met Srivatsa Ramaswami a few years ago, they began to develop a deep friendship; the two authors travel together, giving lectures and master classes.

(A friendly dialogue on yoga) 『What if we were able to listen in on a dialogue from a classical and ancient tradition between a serious and learned yoga student and his erudite teacher? "Yoga Beneath the Surface" offers a rare, modern equivalent of that time-honored student/teacher tradition. It captures the essence of some of yoga's deepest concepts, and helps refine our understanding of many yoga techniques, reflecting a friendly tone using clear and simple language. The glossary allows the reader to access subjects and questions easily. And I won't be surprised if dedicated yoga teachers and students from around the U.S. ask David Hurwitz and Srivatsa Ramaswami to bring out a sequel! This book is highly recommended. 』 『
In The Complete Book of Vinyasa Yoga Srivatsa Ramaswami presented the full breadth of yogasana teachings as taught by Sri. T. Krishnamacharya (1888–1989) — the father of modern yoga. Now, for the first time, Ramaswami imparts his vast yoga experience and knowledge of Krishnamachara's distinct vinyasa krama system in an accessible question-and-answer format with experienced California yogi David Hurwitz. In a beautifully clear and conversational style, Ramaswami and Hurwitz delve deeply into various general and specific topics relating to yoga philosophy and practice, shedding light on even the most confusing concepts. The nearly 240 questions are drawn directly from Hurwitz's private study with Ramaswami, and include: Does yoga leadto happiness? How do we achieve the famous ahimsa (non-violence)? How does the yogi "see" his soul? What is the role of breath in Asana? Where does willpower come in? and Was Krishnamacharya happy? Yoga Beneath the Surface is the next best thing to studying directly with one of yoga's true gurus —and a must-read for every serious yoga student.

(Good premise, average execution) 『A very interesting premise that is well presented -- until you get to the Yoga sequences.
The sequences are very basic and very repetitive -- with the same photographs being used over and over again.
In short, there are better books on the practice of Mindfulness and there are better books on Yoga practice.
If you want both in one book, then this one is OK. Although, personally, I'd recommend Erich Schiffman's "Yoga: The Spirit and Practice of Moving Into Stillness" over this one.
My copy of Schiffmann's book is well thumbed. But I doubt that I will pull "Mindfulness Yoga" off my bookshelf too many more times.
』
(Exactly what a yogi needs to know) 『I've been doing yoga for about 5 years and began to become more interested in why we do yoga, in its spirtual underpinnings if you will. This book perfectly addresses that topic. There's an excellent description of yoga's origins and relationship to Buddhism. Moreover, it's a great tool to turn yoga asanas and movement into "moving meditation." Even in vinyasa-power yoga, there's a lot we can learn about and practice to enhance mind-body-spirit connection. This book does an outstanding job of informing the new or experienced yogi about how to gain more insight into what we really want to achieve from yoga.』
