(Nothing too challenging, but pleasant and relaxing. A nice option for yoga novices and people on bed rest) 『I have been using my Yoga in Bed book here and there, and thought I might try it as a 'session' today.
THE AM SECTION
The AM routine took about 45 minutes to do, but I would imagine it would be shorter or longer to do the whole thing depending on how long you held each pose, how slowly/quickly you breathe and move through things, etc.
About half of the poses offered in the book used up the entire bed, so my poor dog had to keep moving around. I imagine sharing a bed with a sleeping human would entail only doing some of these poses.
The only props needed are bed pillows, which worked fine. I had to shove all the blankets off the bed to really be able to get good stretches in. Of course, I could have *made* the bed instead, but I felt lazy.
I thought the yoga poses themselves were super relaxing. Almost too relaxing. I was expecting a few of the energizing poses you can actually DO in bed, like the cobras and down dogs, but the poses offered were honestly just prep poses and stretching. I added a of my own few boats, bows and locusts just to keep things interesting. For the AM routine, this could have been a tad more stimulating.
THE PM SECTION
The PM poses were just what I was hoping for - relaxing, a way to ease out the kinks of the day and release the stress. I found doing the entire routine took about 25 minutes. I particularly like the massaging the Mind and Rub the Slate Clean techniques.
There is a Savasana at the end called the Chill Out Meditation. I like this one - this is rather how I end up doing the meditation part (to be loving and gentle with your puppy-like mind). And if this section results in sleep, that is just fine. This IS a sleepytime routine, after all.
The book finishes with some information on yogic sleeping (lucid dreaming, prophetic dreaming). This part is really just a blurb - there is nothing here to instruct the reader on these techniques. It's more of an "here are some things you might want to look into" bit.
The last few pages of the book describe how to create a sacred sleep space (how to set the mood, how to make good sleep a priority) to help ease you into restful slumber. A few resources for insomnia/sleep disorders are listed.
OVERALL IMPRESSIONS
Overall I like this book and find it very handy. I like the way the spiral binding folds out flat. I like the thick, smooth pages, and the large, bright, happy pictures.
I also like the soothing text that describes the poses as "sweet" and "delicious," reminding me just how luxurious yoga is supposed to feel.
I think the AM part is a little underwhelming for experienced beginner yogis and above. I would have liked to see some harder bed poses here. However, absolute yoga novices will not be intimidated to begin yoga right here, with this pleasant little book.
The PM section is appropriate and lovely. I was able to actually do all these poses with DH lying in bed next to me, which was a plus.
I did find that this book was a LIFESAVER for me when I was sick. I recently had a several week illness that really took me out. I was able to use and enjoy this book the entire time to keep up with my yoga practice. There is nothing challenging here and all the poses really are designed to gently stretch and relax the body. I imagine this book would be really very helpful to people on bed rest or with some forms of disability.
Recommended on various levels with the understanding that these are all super easy poses.』
(Fibro friendly stretches! Wonderful!) 『I have fibromyalgia and other health problems that make my very stiff and sore. I have been looking to try yoga but everything is just too hard, fast or painful! Not this book! The book lays flat on the bed or the floor so you can have it handy while you are learning the stretches. You are encouraged to take it slow and easy too. These stretches are just as easily done on the floor too. For those of us that cant stand up for very long this is a very effective routine. If you can only do a few of these stretches then do those. You are introduced to simple meditation too. I enjoy this book so much I ordered the DVD too. I would love to give this book to everyone I know. Absolutely wonderful!!!!!!!!』
(A few flaws but generally great for anybody) 『Many people have an interest in yoga, but simply don't have the time. They are on the go from start to finish, barely having time to drink down coffee for breakfast or race through McDonalds for lunch. How are they going to get in a full hour of class for yoga?
Edward Vilga has the solution. The ring-bound book "Yoga in Bed" lies nicely flat, and provides a variety of simple poses you can do while settling down to sleep or when preparing to wake up. You don't have to find your mat or strap. All you need is you, your bed and perhaps a pillow.
These aren't complex backbends or ankle-behind-neck positions. They are about stretching, twisting, and gaining focus. When I do the nighttime ones, I really do find myself unwinding, slowing down, and preparing for sleep. It's a great way to release the stresses of the day and get ready for a much needed rest.
In the opposite way, the morning time ones help me to get out of bed. Sometimes it's tempting to just lay in bed for a while - but these provide a gentle transition to get my eyes open and the blood beginning to flow. It's a gentle way to start the day going smoothly.
I really like how the book lies flat with its ring binding - and the large photos of the poses really help to illustrate what to do. Again, not that any of the poses are complicated at all - but sometimes it's nice to see the pose laid out.
Now that being said, the book was written by a man - and all the poses are of a sexy woman in PJs in a variety of positions. It gets a little gratuitous at times, with 6 different pictures of her just laying in bed and smiling in different directions, without any real indication of why there are different pictures of her. It felt a little uncomfortable.
Plus, is this Lolita?? She has got teddy bears all over her bed. It just added to the uncomfortable factor.
Another issue is that this girl apparently has a huge bed with nobody else in it that she can stretch out on to do her exercises. Me, I have someone in bed with me - and there simply isn't enough room to do some of the activities. I would have hoped that they would design the actions to be performed on a "single bed" - i.e. either a person's normal bed or on their half of a more full bed. To expect every book reader to either be single with a huge bed, or on an off-schedule with their partner so they have the whole huge bed to themselves, doesn't really make sense to me.
That all being said, you can pick and choose through to find activities that do fit into your situation, and I do find them very relaxing and refreshing. So I think it was a cool idea. They just should have put more thought into the model / environment of the photos they were taking, and also into the size of the bed they were designing the exercises for.
Rating: 4/5』
(buy it and do it.) 『This is a great way to get used to doing SOMETHING for yourself. Low impact, and for me, noticable reasons why I should be doing it.
enjoy.』 『
Yoga has been shown to promote flexibility, deep relaxation, strength, balance, coordination, and a general sense of well being. But for many busy people, joining a yoga class may be an unrealistic goal. Illustrated with lively color photographs, YOGA IN BED—a concept developed by an overworked yoga instructor who had no time to practice on his own—offers gentle stretches and guided meditations that can fit into anyone’s schedule. Author and teacher Edward Vilga’s goal is to make the practice of yoga accessible and fun, and he’s chosen and named poses, from “Breakfast Bend” to “Winding Down Twist,” that are within the range of most healthy individuals, and easy to do in the comfort and privacy of home.

The little guide book and cards format are really convenient, informative. Easy for beginners. Great format for sharing with others. I will have fun with this for years. Did I say colorful, fun, and informative yet? Absolutely. All that. Inspiring too, because each card has a meditation suggestion on it, the graphics are smooth, and you can arrange them in any sequence you like following the constructive advice from the book to get a really nice hatha yoga experience. Timeless.』
(I like how the postures are related to the chakras) 『The cards don't have real pictures and sanskrit names, but I did like the few different poses that aren't classic poses. I would recommend these cards for a beginning yogi who only wants surface level information on the poses. I did benefit from the way the cards are arranged in order of chakras. It was a nice way to develop a class plan to assist a group of students in a particular chakra healing/activating session. The stickers that came with the cards were pretty. I used these cards when I first started to teach, to help me develop a class outline.』
(an all time favorite) 『I had this yoga deck years ago, lost it in a move, and can never quite forget them. It is lovely to be able to find it and purchase it again. It is colorful, effective-in that there are loose cards that can easily be referred to during practice, allows for personal creative input as you follow the instructions, inspiring, and therefore contributes to keeping up one's yoga practice.』
(Great Idea, Useful In Many Ways, But Not Well Executed!) 『I gave this Yoga Card Set 4 Stars in spite of my comments in the Title.
Overall I really do like the way the structure of the set works. Their are many really interesting poses, some I've not seen before (and I've been doing Yoga daily for 7 years, have a great teacher, a library of Yoga books and over 70 videos).
I like using the idea that she grouped "like" poses by colour, these are categorized by the type of movements they use (forward bends, back bends etc). This helps a lot with structuring the sequence of the poses and gives a lot of room for creativity in structuring one's practice.
The little companion book is nicely written and clear as far as how to use the cards and considerations for sequencing. However the cards themselves are not very user friendly. The pictures are vague drawings and often don't seem to be showing what the written instructions often indicate. Even the instructions themselves are not very clear on many of the cards either.
What would have been nice is if the book had each pose with a detailed description of the pose plus photographs, then the cards could just be used as summaries. Unfortunately because you are limited to the small amount of instruction on the cards you don't get enough information to work with.
As a person with a lot of experience with Yoga I feel that at least sometimes I can "read between the lines" to a point and yet there are still some things that leave me confused. I think someone without any experience of yoga would be completely lost.
Still, I gave the four stars because I have found benefits to this set overall in spite of it's shortcomings.
Namaste』
(disappointing) 『I read the little book it came with, which I did like, but the cards I did not. Very good idea, but the illistrations are hard to understand. And the directions don't coincide with the pictures. I am going to try Tim Clark's yoga cards, "create your own yoga program."』 『No more trying to turn pages of a book while standing on your head! Instead pick eight illustrated, instructive cards and place them in front of you while you work each yoga position. "Deal" out exercises designed to relax the mind, release muscle tension, and improve circulaton. "Basic Yoga For Everybody" is a book and card set certain to provide many hours of healing and joy for the body and soul.』

This is a must have for the person that wants to put the right foot forward in understanding and developing a personal Yoga practice, or for the individual that hopes to gain a better historical understanding of this ancient practice. In a concise fashion the reader will acquire the tools to develop an individual practice. The reader will also find answers in identifying an instructor and style of Yoga that is right for them. Clear photographs and detailed instructions round out this most excellent and "Essential" resource.』
(Just like the title says--Yoga Basics) 『This book is a competent introduction to yoga. Contrary to one reviewer, the section on yoga philosophy is short and to the point.
The section on yoga teachers and styles can be very useful in helping to decide what yoga style you might wish to explore.
The section (the bulk of the book) on yoga postures is adequate but unexceptional. The descriptions are ok, but the photos are small and not especially clear. No variations are shown for advanced practicioners or for those with limited flexibility.
There is a brief description of yoga props, but no information on how to incorporate them into your practice.
The section on sample yoga routines is mediocre.
This book is best as an inexpensive supplement to a good yoga class or video tape. The best beginners yoga book I've seen is "Yoga for Beginners" by Mark Ansari and Liz Lark.』
(Very basic information with too much history.) 『The book covers the very basics of yoga. It is too long on history and people in the yoga movement, which is ok for those who want that stuff. I went away wanting much more from the book. It did not deliver what I had expected.』
(A clearly written book about yoga philosophy and practice.) 『This title is a handy resource book for practicing yoga, although the spine design makes it difficult to keep flat on the floor near your yoga mat. However, the posture photos and descriptions are easy to follow. The history and philosophy of yoga are written very accessibly, as are the approaches to meditation. I enjoy this book as a yoga student of 8 years, and am glad a yoga teacher recommended it. I keep signing it out at my library, but it's so handy and succinct I want to give it a permanent place on my bookshelf.』 『

(Kundalini yoga explained - for beginners) 『fabulous book for beginners who wants to combine the practice with the theory. I loved the practical approach to the book, well written for a seek and beginner like me, light to read and certainly leaves you hungry for more information. you certainly can feel that Gurmukh is passionate about this form of yoga and I can almost feel the positive energy that often comes from practicing yoga. Some beautiful gems of spiritual knowledge. A must read if you really want to have a better understanding of kundalini yoga, it is more than just the breathe of fire.』
(Intriguing reading) 『I got this book in combination with her yoga video. Interestingly, they do not follow the same "program" of movements. The book is divided into areas where you can focus on specific physical and mental situations you have and her suggestions for addressing them. Fascinating knowledge, but a bit cumbersome for applying on one's own.』
(Gurmukh is amazing!) 『I loved this book, I read it everyday, a little at a time, and I read it over again! I shared it with my students, and anyone who would listen to me! It is full of wonderful very helpful information! A must buy!』
(Lovely book- go for it!) 『I have already have a collection of yoga books and yet I still highly recommend this book very highly. Gurmukh's anecdotal style is very affectionate, supportive, and warm. I particularly enjoyed the stories from her own life. Kundalini yoga is VERY different from the hatha, triyoga, ashtanga, etc. that I've done before. It's energizing- that's an understatement! You'll feel much brighter, or as she says, radiant.』 『
Gurmukh, an internationally renowned yoga teacher, outlines the spiritual and physical practices of Kundalini Yoga, which she has taught for the last thirty years. Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (The photos alone are worth the price of the book) 『Performing the exercises in this book will improve your dexterity and possibly even contribute to better performance, say, on a computer keyboard or playing a musical instrument. Whether the hand poses actually enhance psychological/spiritual areas, as the author claims, I can't confirm, as my discipline is all over the place and I practice the mudras sporadically and in various combinations. The exercises are definitely worth doing, and they relieve the stress and tension in my hands better than the massages I'd been getting. That said, the delightful photographs of the author in a range of costumes with complementary make-up and sets make the book fun on an entirely different level. The images evoke (for me) Emma Peel, Madama Butterfly, Mata Hari and Barbarella. These photos are so cool I find myself gazing at them and meditating upon the meaning of, say, the turn of a wrist or the lift of an eyebrow. Not only is Sabrina Mesko introducing and promoting mudras to the west, but she is reviving the art of hand-dancing in a spectacular way.』
(Simple, Practical, Powerful) 『Finally, a book that provides practical use of ancient healing yoga. The focused descriptions alongside the corresponding chakras, and photos make this book a modern classic--easy to read, easy to use, powerful results!』
(Question to a writer?) 『Dear Sabrina, I have a question regarding the "historical" information you cite about the unknown Armenian king (p4) in your book "Healing Mudras." You state that his reply to the question what he would take home was, "the hand dancer, because he speaks better with hands than my people do with words." I am curious to know which Armenian king you are referring to and what reliable source you've used for this information in your non fiction book. I enjoyed your book, but I am concerned about other readers who might be misinformed by a story that is not based on historical facts and is not cited as a possible legend.』
(Great starter on mudras) 『I had spent too much time with the windows of my room closed. I wondered why I always found it so hard to concentrate and why I felt so sleepy when I was reading or studying for a college class. The first time I practiced a couple of mudras in a row, I felt very energized and alert. Ever since I have started practising two mudras every morning before I start my day. It feels wonderful. I have noticed that I am no longer moody. Sabrina has written a great book. Though it doesn't describe the meaning of each mudra in depth, the instructions and photos make it easy to do the mudras.』
(Great book) 『I really like this book, which I use in conjunction with Sabrina's video on the same subject. It contains exercises that I haven't seen elsewhere. The book contains some details that are missing from the video eg which chakras to concentrate on, which colours to visualize and which mantras to use and other guidelines for practice. On the other hand, the video shows precisely how to execute a good selection of the mudras. Before I got the video, I wasn't quite sure how fast and deep I should do the different breaths.
I found the mudras were effective right from the beginning, but their effects only intensify, the more you do them. I really feel recharged after a tiring day at the office after doing a few of these. I find that they clear my mind and prepare me for meditation, if I feel like doing it, or just relaxing. I hope that Sabrina writes another book soon. She is a good example of what she teaches, with her flawless complexion and clear eyes.』

(A review from my wife, a yoga teacher) 『I purchased this book on the last day of Radiant Health Yoga Teacher Training. I had heard about it months previously and knew that at some point I would read it. I thought it was very "appropriate " that I came across this book on the last day of training. The reason is that Lilias Folan was the first yoga teacher I was ever exposed to back in the seventies via her PBS television program. So here I am almost 30 years later, my last day of classroom teacher training and I find her book, not in a conventional bookstore but in a gift and candy store. There she was, looking up and smiling at me from the front cover in her purple long sleeved shirt and black pants, arms out stretched lovingly with her palms open. No accident.
This book gently introduces yoga to an aging population (Lilias and I are both a part of that population now) in typical Lilias fashion.
Not only does this book discuss asana (and adaptations) but also much of the book is dedicated to meditation, pranayama, the koshas, as well as a little information regarding the Yamas and the Niyams and the stage of life that people our age (Lilias and me) are in now. It is wonderfully written to this age group.
This is a beautiful book and I will use it both as a reference and an inspiration for many years to come. 』
(A Yoga Book for All Ages) 『Yoga gets better with age, and age gets better with yoga a la Lilias.
Whether you grew up learning triangle pose watching Lilias on TV, or if you are brand new to yoga, "Yoga Gets Better With Age" is for yogis of any age or level of wellness.
Clear, concise and with lots of easy to follow pictures featuring people with real bodies, "Yoga Gets Better with Age" stands out from the pack.
』
(Love and Light) 『This book added so much to my love of yoga. Lilias has such a beautiful way of teaching and she is such a warm and understanding person. She has given me the gift of "love and light" in this wonderful book.』
(Wonderful for all yogis) 『Lilias's book is an excellent resource for understanding yoga but also to better understand your own practice. Lilias shares her knowledge of yoga in a holistic manner, covering all of the major topics necessary to gain a true understanding. She communicates the philosophy and practice through her own experiences so that it is not intimidating and easy to understand for a yogi at any level. It is a truly wonderful book and Lilias's enthusiasm for yoga is felt in every word you will read.』 『
Nothing softens the aging process like yoga! Now, the First Lady of Yoga shows how to add more flexibility, energy, and joy to your life--with her new method of "yin" stretching for the maturing body.
As Americans in their 40s, 50s, and beyond search for ways to increase flexibility, diminish aches and pains, enhance well-being, and slow the aging process, the word is out: yoga does all this and more. But traditional yoga poses and stretches can be a problem for stiffer, less pliable bodies. That is why Lilias Folan--the most beloved and admired American yoga teacher ever--has created "yin" yoga, a specific, safe, and creative way to stretch and strengthen within each yoga posture. The technique, which cannot be found in other yoga works, is at the heart of this book. Some outstanding features include: o More than 200 photographs of Lilias demonstrating the yoga postures using her innovative techniques o Lilias, in her trademark soothing and upbeat style, guiding readers along a spiritual path that leads to increased vitality and a higher Self o Engaging stories of her life's journey from this internationally renowned yoga master and grandmother
Whatever you're looking for at this time of life--wisdom, serenity, meaning, energy, bliss, or simply to feel better--Lilias will show how a mindful practice of yogic principles can help you find it.
