(Required reading for anyone who thinks they practice yoga)
『This book will wake you up to what yoga really is--a set of hardcore spiritual disciplines that lead to full liberation from suffering...if you practice long and hard and smart enough!

This book represents the best of academic writing. Written as a collection of very readable 2-5 page essays, it is as inspiring as it is informative. Georg never compromises his position that yoga requires intense practice and study to reach the final goal, nor does he lose sight of the integral nature of yoga sadhana (no 30 days to loose hamstrings here!).

Read this in a week and you'll know more about yoga than most so-called yoga teachers...and you'll be inspired to practice more seriously than ever, whether your practice of yoga involves the postures or not!』

(The Deeper Dimension of Yoga is Up There!)
『Georg Feuerstein has produced a large number of books. This is my all-time favorite, because it covers in essay form a vast territory. All the essays are highly readable and thought-provoking. Let's have more of this sort of anthology.』
『Here is a comprehensive survey of the full breadth and depth of the 5,000-year-old Yoga tradition, emphasizing its potent philosophy and spiritual vision. Georg Feuerstein demonstrates that Yoga is much more than a system of physical exercises—it is a profound path of self-transformation that encompasses a range of teachings, practices, and sacred texts that can help us cultivate wisdom, balance, and inner freedom, as well as physical health. Feuerstein is one of the few Western scholar-teachers of Yoga whose writing and teaching penetrate the full richness and depth of this ancient tradition. Here he offers a collection of essays touching on all facets of the discipline. Topics include: The different branches and styles of Yoga The ethical teachings of Yoga Yoga and vegetarianism Meditation and mantras Choosing a teacherTantric Yoga The experience of ecstasy』

(Yoga for the short set)
『Yoga fans of the world avert thine eyes for I am not one of you. Haven't anything against it, mind. But my primary and initial contact with the exercise (sport? lifestyle?) was in college with a 22-year-old instructor who told us that sleeping during class was fine. Like Pilates, yoga has always been a kind of mystery to me. Even more mysterious still is the plethora of yoga titles you will see out there for children. Everything from Babar's Yoga for Elephants to Little Yoga: A Toddler's First Book of Yoga. These books are out there and they are popular. So it was with supreme built-in skepticism that I saw The Kids' Yoga Book of Feelings arrive on my desk. I had two problems right off the bat. The title contains the words "kids" and the word "yoga", which sets of the preliminary alarum bells. But then you get to the word "feelings" and the warning signals suddenly start blaring out a concentrated series of percussion-like honks. Feelings and yoga? That can't be a good idea. It can't, but the book gets away with it. Eschewing the more sickly aspects of yoga-based feelings, Mary Humphrey has penned a really nice how-to book that instructs kids on various positions and the responses they engender. The mind/body connection is no longer as debatable as it once was, but aside from any of that I'm just grateful to have a book in my collection with clear-cut photographs, useful poses, and a text that will be snapped up and enjoyed by many a parent and child looking for exactly this.

"Yoga allows you to meet the you inside of you." Oh so? Apparently. Author Mary Humphrey explains at the start of the book that yoga is a practice that has existed for more than five thousand years. There is no wrong yoga style, and the process can make you feel better and allow you to focus your mind. That said photographer Michael Frost captures five nicely multicultural kids as they reenact each pose. From the Lotus Blossom (good for feeling peaceful) to the Puppy Dog (happy and perky) to the Opossum at the end (satisfaction) each picture and accompanying text helps the reader learn it step by step. Accompanying animal drawings are by Janet Hamlin.

Truth be told, the yoga book I'm fondest of is probably Twist: Yoga Poems as penned by Janet S. Wong and inked by Julie Paschkis. That was the children's book that introduced me to the best yoga pose of them all: The Lion. It's a pose that really justifies children's books of yoga better than any other position I can name. Here's how it works: You sit on your heels, put your hands on your thighs, stick out your tongue, and roar. I'm glad I read Wong's book before I read this one too because had I encountered it on my own and without any background I might have fallen under the false assumption that Humphrey was making up pseudo-yoga poses in a kid-friendly manner. Not the case. Yoga, it would seem, lends itself naturally to children's books. And clearly photographer Michael Frost shares my thoughts on The Lion. After all, every single kid in the book is performing it on the back cover.

Speaking of Mr. Frost, he does a nice job. The Eyewitness trend of placing a photographed subject against a white background is beginning to get a little old. Soon it will seem as outdated as a 1960s psychedelic poster. Fortunately each shot here consists of the child posing on their yoga mat with a detailed illustration in the background of one color or another. The kids for their part seem to be having fun and their smiles aren't the stuck, plastic grins of the reluctant child model. They age in ranges between what look to be 8-10, identifying their audience right off the bat.

Yeah, I like it fine. I'm no yoga guru so it's entirely possible that there's some huge gaping inaccuracy about the exercise that I have missed in my ignorance. No matter. It's a fun book to read through and I can see it being checked out in droves by parents hoping to inculcate their own children into a yoga-friendly lifestyle. Whether or not you see that as a good or bad thing is entirely up to you.』

(This book rocks!!!)
『If you want a book that can support you in teaching yoga to children this is the one. Not only will it support you in asana it will help you in helping them develop their self expression. I have been using it in NYC public schools with my students, as well as in my personal practice. It is a great way to introduce young people to self-expression and yoga. And the pics are awesome too.

Cheers,
Vanessa Tricoche』

(The Kids' Yoga Book of Feelings)
『From its bright cover of multicultural kids in colorful clothes reaching out, up, and down, this is a special yoga book for young people. The book features double-paged spreads, one showing a wonderful full-page photo of a child in a pose that has an animal or familiar object linked to the feeling being expressed. The facing page has the name of the pose, a short passage about the feelings associated with it, and an affirmation. Each page with text is set on a beautiful background that picks up the colors in the photograph facing it, and includes an illustration of the animal associated with the pose. The introduction to yoga is informative, yet kid-friendly.』

(Kids' Yoga Book of Feelings)
『This is an incredible children's Yoga book! It is beautifully written and photographed and easy to understand for even a young toddler. I love the way it describes the poses as certain animals and links them to a state of being -- peaceful, calm, centered, etc! A positive affirmation is given with each pose. My 4-year-old son LOVES this book so much that I now give it out as birthday gifts. My 7-year-old nephew discovered the book and sat quietly reading it to himself for 10 minutes. After looking through all the photos, he jumped up and asked his dad to do one of the poses with him! I think kids like the book b/c they can open it to any page and do that particular pose. I also think they enjoy the pictures of children doing the poses. If my son is feeling angry or scared, we get out the book and do a yoga pose to bring him into a better state of being. I highly recommend this book for kids 4 years to 13 years of age.』

Yoga is an art that emphasizes a calm, happy state of being. Yoga helps to harmonize your feelings to achieve a more balanced way of living. Each of the poses described has an animal or familiar object linked to the feeling it expresses. In addition, there's an affirmation about the feeling being released. For example, as you assume the pose of the polar bear, you say, "I feel balanced and grounded," just as a polar bear stands firmly on a patch of ice. Come celebrate yoga with the kids in this book as they demonstrate twenty poses from the Butterfly to the Opossum.

(Fun for my Tot!)
『My two year old enjoys this book quite alot. I am constantly surprised by the times and places she'll begin her yoga sessions, any where from the beach to the doctors office. Though I have not made it a part of our every day as I'd wanted to, the images and poses really seem to stick with her. Its a nice little book. Short and sweet, the poses are adapted for the very young, but if you have fun with it your child will too.』

(I LOVE this book!)
『This is a great little book! The illustrations are just darling and there is a helpful little guide in the back of the book for parents. I read it to my 3 year old and she did the positions quite easily - the animal comparisons for each move seemed to be inspiring to her. My nine year old even liked particpating.

I wish I had found this book sooner and plan on getting copies for my friends with toddlers/preschoolers.』

(a reference)
『This book is repetitive of other books in the genre (healing wise woman traditions) but it is also an excellent book to have on reference for when you forget the stuff that you know you 'know'. There are comforting tea recipes, yoga poses (that don't make me feel like I have to compete with yogis in some class) and a mish-mash of information pertaining to women's healing. It's a comforting little reference book to have when I don't have the time or energy to flip through hundreds of pages of other reference books.』

(Eh.)
『This book reminds me of those fake books that are just advertising for some product, and not only was it advertising, but it was really poorly designed advertising. In this case, the product is the LUNA YOGA class. Now it may be that I will find some great benefit in taking a class, but I do not want to now that I have read 15-20 pages about how I should. A simple note in the foreward (along the lines of "You should really take a class to gain the full benefit of these exercises") might have done the trick.

The guide to poses was useful, although you could get the information from another yoga book (Yoga for Women by Paddy O'Brien for instance). The dances were the one piece of new information that I have not come across before... Anyhow, if you can get past all that, you might find something useful i this little book.』

Women are women, not men, and deserve to follow their natural femininity. That's what Luna Yoga is about. The book isn't just about exercises; it's about attitude, an embracing empowering one.

This type of yoga isn't new. It's an old philosophy and healing art. Indications show the origins of yoga to be feminine, but today yoga is thought to be a man's expertise. In a man's world women learn to look, think, act, and walk like a man. Adelheid teaches that there is nothing wrong with being a woman with natural body movements, with our moody moods and freely moving hips.

Adelheid uses evidence with care and discrimination, but not everyone will be open to her theories. Some will call her a feminist and a New Ager, as if those are bad things to be. Some will refuse to hear her out. Luna Yoga is directed towards women seeking natural ways in healing and/or maintaining health, especially in the fertile and sexual areas.

Luna Yoga Contains (in this order):
*Introduction
*Publisher's Preface
*Editor's Preface
*Why Luna Yoga?
*Author's Foreword
*Part One - The Roots of Luna Yoga
*Part Two - Using Luna Yoga
*Part Three - Luna Yoga Exercises
*Part Four - Luna Yoga Healing Sequences
*Part Five - Sensuous and Sensible Additions
*Part Six - The End, and the Beginning
*Resources and Further Reading

Adelheid presents the reader with well-constructed work that covers theories from research along with experiences that instruct, inform, and empower. She discuses technical and factual information gathered about her experience. Adelheid brings classic yoga together with Aviva Steiner's menstrual calisthenics and provides detailed instructions for breathing exercises, sketched illustrations, tribal fertility dances, and recipes. Her content is original, her style of presenting and authenticity of facts - excellent. She wrote Luna Yoga in second person making her encouraging words come alive.

It began for Adelheid when a diagnosis confirmed cervical cancer and her search led to an alternative besides surgery. She studied her life style, lack of satisfaction with inner longings, and wondered if they had anything to do with the cancer growing inside her. "Cancer is a very strong signal. It shows you are bored with life." Therefore, Adelheid decided to quit her job, discover alternative medicine, and take time for herself. After she studied with Aviva Steiner, another test later revealed a class 1 PAP; healthy cells.

Excerpt From the Book:

"Luna Yoga works by stimulating and tonifying the endocrine system. With great probability, due to the intense concentration on our sexual organs, a feedback cycle is formed with the pituitary gland which directs our entire endocrine system. The gentle sensing exercises, the focusing of our breath o the sexual organs, and the dances all help to regulate our hormones."

Publisher Susun Weed says this about the book:
"I went to Adelheid's class expecting the usual breathing, stretching, and meditating. What a delightful surprise to find myself in the midst of a quiet revolution in the way yoga is offered to women."

Editor Amy Sophia Maroshinsky says this:

"Adelheid writes of the importance of menstruation and the need for women to heal and empower themselves."

I'd never tried yoga before, but Adelheid's book inspired me to place my body into unusual positions. At first, I felt apprehensive, but later found the exercises liberating. I suspect further examination into this style of yoga is in my future.

As a woman who believes women are as good as men, only different, I agree with her philosophies and

Adelheid Ohlig clearly intends to bring the philosophy, discipline, and healing art of luna yoga to the attention of women. 『I use this book allot in teaching and showing my older students that no matter what age, yoga is for everyone.』

(Yoga for Seniors)
『As the baby boomers age group becomes a significant portion of the population, it is necessary to inspire more people to keeping the body and the mind healthy and active. Whilst the models in this book are for the most part very adept in their asana practice, some of the asanas translate very well for the over 50 year old that has not had much exposure to yoga. The triangle is a nice example of this and the standing twist with one foot on the chair.
I think the book is an inspiration for student who is open minded. Many of my senior students laughed when I showed them some of the poses in the book saying "I can't do that". Yet in that same class they did do some of the asanas, and with integrity too. This was a great psychological boost for them. We are never too old to learn new things, only too old in the habits we have cultivated. An added bonus was seeing British actor Terence Stamp in some of the photos. Camella Nair - Author of "Aqua Kriya Yoga".』

(Intimidating to Seniors)

(Great Partner Yoga Book!)
『Amazing book! Not only is it artistically beautiful, the poses are fun and challenging. If you're already a yoga buff and are looking to find a book with good partner poses, then this is a great buy.』

("Contact" is a picture book)
『This book has beautiful pictures. The text is interesting but scanty. I would have liked more detail on the principles of the poses and how to actually do them. Many of the poses shown are beyond what the average practitioner can do.

(In Touch with your Partner)
『This is the best partner yoga book that I have found. I have taught yoga for many years including "date night" yoga so I'm frequently looking for new books to get fresh ideas for class. CONTACT is beautifully photographed and written for the yoga mat or the coffee table.

(A Beautiful Disappointment)
『I really wanted to love this book. It's beautifully designed with gorgeous photographs, inspiring poses, and lofty prose. My wife and I pored over it's pages with anticipation, but when we attempted the positions, we were frustrated by scanty instructions, repetition, and fluff. Both of us are experienced in yoga, though not advanced, and most of the poses were either too tame or too difficult.

The book looks nice on the coffee table, but we're still looking for a good book on partner yoga.』

(The Inner Art of Contacting Yoga)
『I loved how Tara Guber wove the understanding of deep relationship wisdom into the understanding of this powerful partner yoga. It gave me an insight into the postures and as I practiced them with my husband, I also thought about the wisdom and anchored that in my heart and body. The result is more joy, connection and play with my husband. I recommend this to anyone who wants more intimacy and juciness in their life.

(Very good foundation for building up your yoga practice)
『Alan Finger truly sounds like a yoga guru.

In this book, he provides guidance and direction in performing basic yoga poses and reveals their relation to the human chakras. This, in my opinion, is very important in getting your foundation straight&solid, so it can safely be built upon.

The book is written well, without bogging you down with excess theory or pages of boring information, yet neatly introducing useful concepts. The author goes into great detail in explaining how to correctly do a certain pose, and points out common mistakes. I have found it very helpful. The brief real-life examples of balances and imbalances in chakras are also quite interesting.

Lastly, the spiritual part of the book: meditation. I was quite a novice to the whole practice of meditation prior to reading this book. So no surprise, as I tried, I did not always feel like I was entering "the state of oneness, yoga", and at times I couldn't even let go of restless thoughts. But it improves with time and practice. And Alan Finger emphasizes it - practice consistently, in order to get results. I would probably also play some quiet meditation music while listening to the book's audio, as it comes without background music.

I do recommend this book to all who are seeking another dimension in their lives. It will not only help you become better at your yoga practice, but may as well help you make a shift towards a better life and being a better person.』

(Amazing gateway to a powerful practice)
『I'd been to Alan Finger's seminar in NYC years ago and wanted to have that information again to try to recreate the miraculous results I got there. The book in combination with the excellent meditation CD were everything I'd hoped they would be. If you're looking to open up your meditation practice and take it to a new level, I strongly recommend this program. If you've never worked with your chakras, you will find a new discipline you never knew existed.』

(Amazing mantras really work!)
『I have been doing yoga for many years before it became well known and supposedly popular. (Although every other commercial these days has some woman doing yoga in order to attach their product to this symbol of a healthy lifestyle (even a house paint commercial!), I wonder how many folks actually practice for more than a little while...) At any rate, the feature that made this book better than all the rest was the CD which introduced me to the chakra mantras which allowed me to actually feel the chakras in my body on my very first attempt using the mantras! And this author is offering his wisdom at a very reasonable price! Buy this one new!』

(A beautiful balance)
『I found this book to be really helpful in understanding the relationship between yoga and the chakras. It is written so well and I could put it into practice immediately. A must have for those looking to deepen their yoga practice』
『According to the yogic tradition of India, the seven chakras, or energy centers, concentrate and distribute refined life-force energy throughout the body. (Hatha with an Ayurvedic slant)
『It is nice to see Mukunda in print again. I think his strengths as a communicator are in the way in which he outlines "how to polish your practice" and "precautions" that are peppered throughout the book.
I think a reader should have some knowledge of Ayurveda and hatha to begin with to get the most out of the book. The most profound statement in the book reminds us that "many of the benefits of yoga we can only speculate at". Reason being , we are all so unique. Ayurveda now along with Yoga is gradually being recognized as an important facet to adopting a heathier lifestyle and yoga students are becoming more open to the concept of doshas and how they can refine their own practice in a class setting. I liked the detailed section on 'Ayurvedic Yoga Pranayama' but felt that some examples of how the vayu's move in specific asanas may have been useful. He mentions that Frawley's book 'Yoga for your type' is 'impractical' because of its generalization then goes on to list vinyassa's for vata, pitta and kapha students. The meat of the book in my view is reached at p165 "Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy". Interestingly he says that there are no soley pitta or kapha diseases according to Indian pathology, yet every disease will involve vata. Thus, the untimate goal of any hatha class, be it ayurvedic wisdom infused or not has not changed. It should leave the student feeling more balanced, focused and serene by the end because they have increased their self-awareness. There is no mention( I don't think) of ayurveda being ultimately a dualistic system that balances the sun and moon. A prominant chart with times of day to practice could have been useful.(vata, pitta and kapha times are listed however in the appendix charts at the back)I like the way he links pitta, vata and kapha to the kriya yoga system of self-discipline, self-study and attunement to indwelling Reality. Tridoshic balance he says is vata-relax the body/pitta-fire in the belly and kapha-a warm and loving heart.Let's hope that is what this book helps to bring out in more people. ("jewel after jewel of wisdom caught my yogini-writer's eye".)
『At first glance, I have to admit, this modest looking book, devoid of color photographs, looked b-o-r-i-n-g! But, out of respect for the author, who I first met in the 1970's when we were both taking our teacher training at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco, I wanted to give the book a fair chance. As I perused the pages, jewel after jewel of wisdom caught my yogini-writer's eye. Plus, I love the fact that throughout Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy, Mukunda uses the word "Yogini" which, if you think about it, is actually more inclusive than "yogi." A refreshing change!

Mukunda is a lifelong student of classic yogic texts and this book is not only a manual for a balanced Ayurvedic yoga lifestyle but a distillation of Mukunda's dedication to expressing the essence of yoga in all his writings and teachings.

Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy makes clear that one of the greatest contributions of Ayurveda to true health is the understanding of individual constitution and the idea that what balances one person unbalances another.

By marrying the sister sciences of yoga and Ayurveda, Mukunda moves away from an increasing tendency to medicalize yoga therapy. Instead of offering prescriptive recommendations for specific medical diagnoses, he presents sequences of vinyasa (moving with the breath)and pranayama (breathing techniques)suited to Ayurvedic body types.

My main criticism of the book is that the line drawings of the sequences of poses do not include clear references to the use of props. The average beginner may have difficulty following the flexible figures depicted in the drawings. For this reason I do not recommend this book as a beginner reader's sole instructional manual. Aside from this, Mukunda's instructions of the poses reflect his deep understanding of yoga philosophy, anatomy and kinesiology.

Enlivened by stories and wisdom teachings, Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy offers food for body, soul and spirit. I highly recommended this book for all serious --and not yet serious --yoga practitioners to access a deeper level of preventative self-care, in harmony with the seasons and attuned to the rhythm and balance of each individual.

(Simple and adaptable!!!)
『I love this book. Let me say that I've probably owned this book 4 times, but it continually disappears and I have to buy it again. I am a pediatric occupational therapist, so I do a lot of Yoga with children with disabilities.
I've used this book with kids ages 3 through 18 that have varying levels of disability. The colorful pictures truly grab children's attention. The pictures are basic enough that children can look at the picture and attempt to imitate the pose. The yoga is 'watered down' enough that I can adapt these poses to most any child, not only those with special needs. My own daughter loves to look at this book with me!
You do not need a high knowledge base about Yoga to make this book effective and practical. I've purchased many other kids yoga activities, and this is the one that I use daily in my professional practice.』

(Good foundation for kids' fitness)
『This book is well-written, and approaches yoga at a good level for kids.

The authors have selected a good variety of movements, and presented them in a format that make them accessible to kids. There is a mixture of easy and not-so-easy positions, and instructions for how to start simple and get more advanced as the child progresses.

There is also ample instruction for the adult who is overseeing their practice. I haven't had a lot of exposure to yoga myself, but I got enough information from the book that (with a little preparatory work on my part) I felt confident in knowing how to get them in the right position while watching out for any problems.

(Note to the sharp-eyed: No, I'm not related to the author)』
