(Excellent simple guide)
『I loved reading this book. Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. It talks about how to live a yogi lifestyle including nutrition. It has some positions, but basicaly a general understanding of yoga.』

(Basic Introduction)
『This is a basic introduction to various yoga paths (hatha yoga, jnana yoga, karma yoga, etc.). I would not call it "comprehensive" or a "guide to daily life." Rather, it's an anthology of Yoga Journal articles that are fine, but more valuable for the beginner.』

(A very general introduction that is easy to read.)
『This book basically is a collection of articles and writings that were published in Yoga Journal, and written by other people that are well respected figures in the Yoga lifestyle. It explains the history and traditions of Yoga, different schools of thought and practice. It is very general, and touches on many different topics, but does not go into much depth about anything, which makes it very easy to read for the beginner of Yoga to get a broad introduction of what's out there, and what it is.』

(A modern classic)
『This book covers all the bases and gives you everything you need to know about yoga philosophy and tradition. With all the offshoot yogas around today, it's so nice to find a book that describes traditional yoga philosophy and practice in an inviting, easy-to-read way. I like that it's a collection by dozens of different writers. You get lots of points of view, but not contradiction. I love this book and refer to it time and again.』
『A masterful exploration of the major schools of yoga, published on the 100th anniversary of yoga in America. With this book, readers will discover the wisdom of the millenia--and learn to live yoga. Topics include the yoga approach to diet and nutrition, meditation as an antidote to stress, the yoga of love and devotion, and more. Photographs and illustrations.』

(Vinyasa yoga, a comprehensive approach of a long tradition)
『A very mature and comprehensive work on yoga, suitable for beginners as well as advanced students. The suggestions how to procede are sound and based on experience. The cd joint with the yoga sutras is beautiful and makes you feeling like in India.』

(Confused Introduction!)
『Its very funny to see the auther announces in the introductary pages that he is the authority of yoga and found a new way.

Its better if he stops criticizing the other styles, improves his own style and writes a useful book in future.

Gained two points because he said he spent many years with Krishnamacharya.』

(complete book for yoga)
『I am a starter for yoga and this bok is very easy to understand. This book is complete with photos and explaination in depth.』

(Fantastic)
『The book is really complete. Have hundreds of photos. I am a yoga teacher and this book is a great compendium of unumbered series of vinyasas.』

(Extraordinary Effort!)
『I own this book and I have had the privilege of learning yoga from Mr. Ramaswami even though it was for a brief period of time. The book can not substitute for him, as he is an exceptional teacher but being in the United States, I treasure the book as he has done an extraordinary job in presenting yoga as he has learnt from his Guru. This book is a must have for anyone who wishes to even learn a little about Yoga. Don't go for other superficial books when such a rare gem is made available for us.』
Sri T. Krishnamacharya (1888–1989) was the most influential figure in the last 100 years in the field of yoga. Many of today's best-known yoga teachers—including his brother-in-law B. K. S. Iyengar, his son T. K. V. Desikachar, and Pattabhi Jois, founder of Ashtanga yoga—studied with him and modeled their own yoga stylesafter his practice and teaching. Yet, despite his renowned status, Krishnamacharya's wisdom has never before been made completely available, just as he taught it. Now, in The Complete Book of Vinyasa Yoga, Srivatsa Ramaswami—Krishnamacharya's longest-standing student outside his own family—presents his master's teachings of yogasanas in unprecedented detail. Drawing upon his 33 years of direct study, beginning in 1955 and continuing nearly until his teacher's death, Ramaswami presents more than nine hundred poses and variations in logically structured sequences, precisely describing Krishnamacharya's complete Vinyasakrama system. Along with every movement of each yoga posture, he covers the proper breathing techniques for each pose—something no other book also derived from Krishnamacharya's teaching does. Nearly 1,000 full-color photographs and a 90-minute audio CD are also featured in this authoritative landmark presentation of the study practiced by the "grandfather of modern yoga."

(very unique and useful)
『This yoga book is unlike any other out there. The focus is on the lessons we can get from yoga, and how those lessons fit into the larger scheme of things. Nancy has a way of saying something very profound yet in an easy to understand style. It's very well written and is especially suited for the serious yoga student and teacher alike. Each chapter is independent of the other so you can pick it up whenever it suits you and still follow along. Bravo!』

(An Excellent Book For Anyone Who Wants To Learn About Yoga)
『Having been a yoga student for many years, and a teacher for the last 8, I have always wondered why a book like this was never available. Well, I'm happy to say it finally is, and it was well worth the wait. Guiding Yoga's Light thoroughly explains yoga in its fullest form--how to live the yogic life through the lessons we learn and teach in yoga class. I've told my students to purchase this inspiring book so they can come to yoga with an understanding beyond asana. I've told my teacher friends to purchase this book for it's awesome lesson plans. It's a book that every yoga student (teachers alike) should have in their yoga book collection!』

(The perfect manual for yoga teachers)
『This is an expanded and revised edition of an invaluable tool for teachers of yoga at all levels. It includes a wide variety of wonderful lesson plans, useful 'words of wisdom,' and is copiously illustrated by a couple of great models. It remains essential reading for professional teachers everywhere and really exciting to see it back in print.』

(WOW, is all I can say!)
『Just received my New, Expanded Edition yesterday. I simply could not imagine how this edition was going to exceed the first edition because it was so outstanding, but it has. There is a class plan for everything from breathing, asana focus, salutations, prana, pranayama, yamas, niyamas, emotions, mindfulness, chakras, lessons of the heart and relaxation. Each class idea follows through with setting the intention, the lesson, asanas for deepening, practice off the mat and wise words. What I like is that you can carry each chapter through for a full class, adding in more or less asanas, or take parts from several chapters and build a customized class. I also like the soft cover format and this new edition is full page size with lots of white space for making notes. What a great resource. THANK YOU, NANCY!!』
『Now in an updated, expanded edition, this book presents 74 easy-to-follow, succinct lesson plans offering instruction in hatha yoga, including asana, pranayama, the yamas and niyamas, the chakras, creating mindfulness and understanding emotions. This book also includes three new, teacher-requested chapters: Salutations in Motion, Lessons of the Heart Centre and Relaxation. For convenient reference, teachers and students can also refer to the vocabulary of Sanskrit pronunciations included in the glossary.Lesson plans progress from basic yogic concepts important for beginning students to more advanced material. Each lesson plan offers a written script for use in class. For beginning teachers, these scripts provide a helpful structure and set the stage for mindful yoga instruction. The book interprets yoga's 5,000-year-old philosophy in an effort to inspire, delight and empower yoga students to enrich their physical, emotional and spiritual lives both on and off the mat.Through each lesson, the book demonstrates how the strength, balance and stretching of the physical practice can inspire a healthy, complete and joyous existence.』

How to Create, Practice and Teach a Yoga Hip Opening Sequence

This is a sequence designed to show people how to stretch and strengthen the hip rotators. When your students understand how these muscles work in different asanas, they can do hip opening, back bending and twisting in a way that is safe as well as fun and invigorating.

In addition to providing a template that can be used to do or teach a hip opening sequence, this book also explains the logic behind the creation of a sequence designed to open the hips. Learn why it is easier to open the hips when you start with poses that externally rotate the legs and hips and then move gradually into more challenging poses such as Parivrtta Trikonasana (Twisted Triangle).』

(Yoga for Transformation: Ancient teachings and Practices for Healing the body, Mind and Heart)
『This is an excellent Yoga Book. I would recomend it for Vinyasa Yoga enthusiast and other forms of Yoga enthusiasts alike, as well as people new to Yoga. It has easy to follow instructions with short routines that even the businest person can fit into their daily routine. I have also found from first hand experience that the techniques for back pains work if followed consistently.』

(Elegance in Action)
『There's lots of noise in the yoga world today. . .infomercial style promises that yoga will sculpt this and mold that. This book brings much needed clarity to a confused universe. It's message is simple, time-honored, and authentic: your yoga journey begins and ends with you. Yoga for Transformation is elegant and speaks with a quiet, compasionate wisdom that radiates the true spirit of a profound yogic heritage.』

(An Authoritative Presentation and Practice Manual)
『I have actively worked with this book for 2 months and this teacher for 5 years. This is an elegant, innovative introduction and practice manual for the broader and deeper dimensions to Yoga practice.

The publication is in two parts. The first is a presentation of the classical five dimensions to the human being from the Taittriyha Upanishad integrated with the Kriya Yoga model of transformation from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and the age and orientation models of Yoga practice from the teaching lineage often known as Viniyoga in the West. This discussion alone will be of much interest to the serious Yoga student of any tradition, for many classical teachings are condensed in a well-written, authoritative and accessible manner. The authority comes both from the influential teachings of Krishnamacharya and his son, Desikachar and the scholarship of the author, a student of Desikachar, Sanskrit and religion for many years.

Following this foundation is a series of discussions and practices sequentially emphasizing each of the 5 dimensions: Annamaya, Pranamaya, Manomaya, Vijnanamaya and Anadamaya. Within these discussions are more well-written teachings on Pranayama, the Bandhas and the Cakra model. These practices are instructive and surprisingly challenging by themselves, but they are not prescriptions. They are illustrations of principles that can be further adapted by individuals to better support their own bodies and purpose for Yoga practice. In brief, this is what the Viniyoga teachings are all about. Still, the practices can be practiced by individuals on their own or used by a teacher as a template when working with his or her own students in group classes. For those not familiar with Viniyoga, the practices are well-presented with pictures and detailed instructions.

For those who have worked with the author for some time, several of the practices are familiar, but others are new. Many of the best practices he has presented at workshops are not shown. This book will be a relief for the many students who have tried to recall the flood of information presented at workshops around the country because much, but not all, is finally written down. A natural complement for this book is Kraftsow's first book, Yoga for Wellness, where the principles of Viniyoga asana practice are presented, along with many therapeutic applications of breath and movement. Three other good complements are Yoga for Body, Breath and Mind by A.G. Mohan, The Heart of Yoga by T.K.V. Desikachar and The Essence of Yoga: Reflections on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by Bernard Bouanchaud.』

(What you need from Viniyoga of Yoga)
『Designed very simply with clear pictures. A book that every yoga student should have. A very good reference. Gary Kraftsow's "yoga for wellness" deals with the technology behind viniyoga, where this piece gives a personal practice session including pranayama.』
『While there is no denying yoga's popularity as a form of physical exercise, the other life-enhancing aspects of this tradition remain obscure to many Westerners. InYoga for Transformation, Gary Kraftsow introduces techniques that treat not only the physical body but also the emotions, mind, heart, and soul of the practitioner-the places where real transformation can take place. There are breathing techniques to control energy levels, exercises to train and sharpen the intellect, and meditative practices to help increase self-awareness. With more than 350 black and white photographs throughout, this unique and accessible book is dedicated to strengthening the whole self-body, mind, and spirit.

"Gary Kraftsow . . . will inspire every Yoga enthusiast." (T. K. V. Desikachar)』

『Yoga has millions of devotees in the Western world, but most contemporary yoga students center their practice on postures but not on the ancient teachings that are still relevant today. InYoga for Transformation, author Gary Kraftsow leads the modern yoga student in combining posture practice with the rich and deep tradition of mind, heart, and spirit. He presents core postures (asanas), clearly illustrated by models of all ages, and describes how to incorporate breathing, chanting, meditation, prayer, and ritual to add a spiritual dimension to your practice.

"The purpose of these practices is to serve you in deepening your self-understanding, and to assist you in the process of self-transformation," writes Kraftsow, founder of the American Viniyoga institute and author ofYoga for Wellness: Healing with the Timeless Teachings of Viniyoga. Viniyoga is a methodology for developing a personal yoga practice using asana, pranayama (breathing), meditation, ritual, and prayer. This multifaceted book is recommended for the serious yoga student who wants to explore new dimensions of yoga; it's not for the beginner or dabbler.--Joan Price

(Heru Bryan)
『This is the best book ever written, in the area of Chinese ancient Daoist alchemic practices. And I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to advance further in internal alchemy. I have been reading and re-reading this book for over 20 years, and everytime I open it, there are still bits and pieces of information, that is still helpfull in my cultivation. For the price, I would say this book is a gift, "really,"』

(Best meditation ever)
『I just want to say that I don't agree that this book isn't for beginners. I started practicing the meditation techniques taught in this book when I was seventeen and the only experience I had prior to that was a little bit of mantra meditation. I had great success! I got as far as feeling vibrations along the 8 channels and having wind pass through my ears. Very highly recommended.』

(A Must Read For Any Serious Taoist Yoga/Chi Gung/Qi Gong Practionaire)
『Many years before almost any Taoist Yoga, Chi Gung books were available. Long before Mantak Chia great works that break it down in physical simple terms and Dr. Yang's Hallmark extremely detailed must read The Root of Chinese Qigong; this was the only book out there.
It allowed me to get started years ahead of what I would have been able to do otherwise.
This book is a must read because it was the first out there and gives some detail that is availble no where else.
The descriptions used here help much with being able to imagine, then really feel and subsequently control and manipulate "vital breath" (a form a chi energy) to eventually open psychic centers and transform jing to higher forms of chi (shen), and thus nourishing and evolving those centers.

(Excelent - highly recomended for practitioners)
『Highly recomended for sincere practitioners with a meditative understanding.

Read the Preface first, and pay particular attention to the first chapter. While not said in these words, what is unusual about this practice teaching is that it starts off with emphasizing a degree of stability in non-dual awareness (ch1) and emphasies its importance for any hope of success. This is what is lacking in so many watered down teachings, with people spinning around in the practices for years with little solid benefit from a higher viewpoint.

The english translation is not the most fluent, and terms such as 'the need to not be mindful of the process is absolutley necessary for success', is spot on in its original intent, but lost a bit in translation. In this instance what is refered to is an anchoring beyond the thinking mind and its ambitions, limited conceptualizations, which crowds the space so that the underlying light is not noticed and cultivated. It does not refer to an abandonment of awareness, rather a deepening of it.
There are a number of simular areas in the book, including things like a disaste for sexual relationships, etc; but if you get past the immeadiate words and undertand the essence of what is being said in the containement and how the underlying flows are qualified (or more so are not qualified into a dualistic energy), then this is the original true meaning.

While the feminine side is an inherent aspect of the internal landscape for anyone proceeding with this practice, nevertheless this book gives it no outward attention and its male mode of presentation might be a little difficult for female practitioners to sort through and integrate the teaching in a way meaningful for them.

The above comments are not meant to discourage anyone who loves meditative practice away from this book. It is truly one of the best and most rare books in a caliber far above most of what is offered.

(Enlightening)
『Earlier I read another book by Charles Luk which was on Master Hsu Yun's discourses and Dharma words and the Diamond Sutra, called "Chan and Zen Teachings, 1st Series". Reading the words of Master Hsu Yun was enlightening and motivating, so I was curious to read another book of Luk's- Taoist Yoga. I was not disappointed.

This book gives all the basic information you might be curious about when it comes to Taoist alchemy and immortality. It gives instructions on Taoist methods aimed at improving health, rejuvenating the body, and even the ultimate aim of creating an "indestructible diamond-body". The ancient wisdom presented in this book is really impressive. If practiced, the methods taught in it can be very beneficial to any yoga practitioner.』

(helpful for young and old.)
『This book has been helpful in getting writing going. Not intimidating and for all ages to use.』

(Yoga for the Brain is a great workout!)
『Teaching students to write used to be so boring. I can remember my teachers in school saying, "Be creative!" but I was never really taught how to do that. I am now a teacher and am faced with the challenge of teaching students to be creative. Yoga for the Brain is a great addition to my writing program in that it gives the student something to base their creativity. For example one entry is "What has been a hard lesson for you to learn?" What a great idea to think about! This is not your typical sentence starter book.』

(Real life writing)
『I know this book was written for teachers, but as a newspaper columnist, I am often asked to conduct writing workshops for adults and teens who want to become writers. Not only do DiPrince and Thurston give hundreds of prompts for on-the-spot writing exercises, many of which help the writer practice and identify good writing techniques, but they also give 50 examples of how to get started writing in "the real world," which is what most adults in these workshops want. For years I'd done my own research and shared my own experiences concerning good places to start out writing, but this list tops anything I ever did on my own. Also, as a substitute teacher, I sometimes find I have dead time to fill and these prompts are fabulous both as fillers and as full lessons for those times teachers leave no plans. There's something in here to cover all bases and as the title implies, this book provides exercise all areas of the brain.』

(Great Writing Tool!)
『Yoga for the Brain is a wonderful tool for teachers of writing. I use this book daily, along with Unjournaling, as journal prompts for my 6th grade students. They laugh, talk, and really get the imagination going! My kids no longer whine when it is journal time...they actually remind ME to do it! Great book to buy!』
More than 365 topics are included in these daily exercises that encourage writers to play with language and "stretch" their writing style. Dispelling the fear of bad grades or criticism, these activities encourage writers to have fun, take risks, and write in new and creative ways. Engaging writing prompts range from the serious to the bizarre, all with the intention of exercising writing muscles, regardless of the writer's strength. Ideas for completing real-world projects include writing material for a family website, a babysitter newsletter with important information about a child, and a persuasive letter to convince a parent to change a household rule.

(Yoga prescription from the experts)
『Any Yoga practitioner and teacher should feel privileged that this book is made available. The authors bring out their experience in dealing with ailments of the body applying Yoga in such great detail. A host of common and not so common ailments are covered - explanation of the relevant anatomy, examples of people they treated with Yoga and the routines used.

As a Yoga teacher I find this book immensely (that is just an understatement) helpful. I routinely use and refer this beautiful presentation to address my student's concern. The authors understanding and respect for the (patient's) body and a diverse audience a book can reach is evident in the routines which are mild and curative, in the precautions and helpful wholesome practices that can also be followed.

The publishers have done a terrific job in the quality of the photographs, printing and the overall book itself. Another jem of a book about application of Yoga for what is needed most today. The authors and publishers have truly done a yoeman service by making such content available.』

(A Well Written, Sound Guide and a Delight to Read)
『As practicing Yoga therapist, perhaps my best recommendation is to note that I have spiral bound my own copy and some of the pages are becoming a bit dog-eared.

This is a well written, sound introductory guide to Yoga therapy, written by two of the Western leaders in this emerging discipline. The text has an elegant simplicity, reflecting years of experience. I especially appreciate the thoughtful allopathic medical advice and wise lifestyle counseling well integrated with the Yoga practices. I also appreciate the extensive resource guide and the many academic references. The book as a whole provides much insight for students, yoga teachers and other health care practitioners wanting to explore the many possibilities for Yoga for health and wellness as well as an alternative or complementary therapy.

As a teacher attempting to work with individuals as a whole, however, I remain somewhat uncomfortable with the connotations of the title of this book. Yoga therapy is not a set of mechanical prescriptions for common ailments. That sort of cookbook assumption does a disservice to the breadth of the discipline, the role of a teacher and the many dimensions to each student. The authors, of course, know this well. Larry Payne has done much pioneering work in Yoga therapy and in bridging this discipline to the allopathic medical community.

In my view, the practices in the book are more illustrative of general principles applied to specific individuals and situations at a point in time rather than prescriptions that can be easily generalized. In that sense, this book may be more appropriate for the experienced Yoga therapist who will be familiar with various caveats, alternative approaches and broader dimensions to Yoga practice.

For example, chronic lower back pain is probably the most common complaint brought to Yoga therapists. The practice suggested in the book should be helpful to many in "typical" situations and I have used it successfully with some of my own students. Few students are typical, however. For many students that particular sequence will be too strong, or too gentle or too long, or contains a contraindicated movement, such as the twist. In real life, many students will have other important health considerations besides unspecified lower back pain, e.g., a different limiting injury, excessive stiffness or flexibility, difficulty breathing, depression, perhaps even much experience in Yoga from another tradition, etc.

Many students will have, or will soon develop, other goals for practice besides pain relief. Increased physical&psychological strength and private spiritual support are two common, but much different aspects of Yoga practice that can be woven in or stimulated from therapeutic applications.

Finally, perhaps more than a technique, students may most need a relationship with a teacher who will see them as a whole, something they might not find in the conventional health care environment.

From those perspectives, there is no substitute for working with a well-trained and experienced therapist. Finding a qualified practitioner, however, may be difficult. This is common with many emerging CAM therapies, but perhaps especially acute in Yoga. There are no standards for Yoga therapists and few in-depth training programs.

An obvious companion to this book is Yoga for Wellness by Gary Kraftsow (from the same teaching lineage). Compare, for example, the much stronger sequence for working with the lower back in that book and the emphasis on case studies. Together, these two books provide a rich, complementary perspective on Yoga therapy.

For those interested in Yoga and complementary and alternative medicine, I recommend The Yoga of Healing by T. K. V. Desikachar and Dr. Arjun Rajabopalan. Also The Best Alternative Medicine by Dr. Kenneth Pelletier. For broader and deeper perspectives on Yoga from the same lineage, see The Heart of Yoga by Desikachar and Yoga for Body Breath and Mind by A. G. Mohan. Practicing or aspiring Yoga therapists should be subscribers, or course, to the International Journal of Yoga Therapy, co-founded by Larry many years ago.』
