In stock soon. Order now to get in line. First come, first served. IPhone 3G used's review (A Repetition of Themes From Previous Wolf Books) 『The title is far more provocative than the book. Most of the discussion centers on aspects of quantum physics that Wolf has written about multiple times now. If you've read his excellent PARALLEL UNIVERSES, for example, you've already assimilated much of what THE YOGA OF TIME TRAVEL has to say. Discussions of Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, parallel universes, space-time, and the communication between past, present, and future have already been covered in several of Wolf's books. If you are already familiar with such concepts, you don't need 150 pages of background and foundation for what, in the long run, amounts to a very short discussion of mental time travel and its usefulness in improving our lives.
Wolf does have a decent chapter on the nature and flow of time, although his terminology gets a bit dense. While the book is, for the most part, readable and accessible for the layman, it does occasionally lapse into the same complexity and disorganization so evident in his very disappointing THE DREAMING UNIVERSE.
Ultimately, the thesis of the entire work comes down to the following: one may free oneself from the contraints of time through meditation, entering into the timeless realm where one surrenders the ego (and hence the endorsement by Deepak Chopra). But do we need all the repetitive scientific explanations to arrive at this conclusion, which is explained in a hundred other books? Wolf also claims that by traveling back in time--i.e., remembering--we can become happier by learning from our mistakes and forgiving ourselves and others. Okay, true enough, but this isn't exactly a revelation.
For Wolf, time travel is a mental construct (short of a real time machine), a notion that seems painfully obvious. We can approach time travel through "unfocusing," thus freeing ourselves from Heisenberg's observer effect ... or we can meditate. It all comes down to the same thing.
Handled differently, this could have been a great book, one Wolf is certainly capable of writing. In the end, however, I didn't learn anything new from this particular treatise.』
(Misleading title) 『I may have to read this book again in say, 10 or 20 years. Maybe it will make sense then. I must agree that there were some good parts in it. In fact, I did take a few interesting ideas from the book. Overall, an interesting, riveting read it is not. If you view transcending time as akin to traveling through it, this may be a book for you.』
(Delightfully Crazy Book) 『I haven't finished to read this book yet, however, it is very interesting and delightfully crazy.Excelent point of view.』
(a waste of time) 『Just finished the book. Very disappointing. The intro and first chapter which I skimmed in the store showed promise, but the book didn't deliver. The title is deceptive. Aside from some token quotes attributed to the Buddha and Patanjali, there is no yoga in this book. The writer clearly has no real personal experience with meditation or yoga of any kind, and writes about these topics as if they were mere ideas which he can fit into his personal intellectual scheme, rather than practices that millions of people devote their lives to. Aside from the living, breathing practices that people DO everyday, there are associated schools of philosophy with thousands of years of history and refinement, which he also neglects. This book is really a pop-quantum physics text in the guise of a spiritual text, and despite the self-conscious hipness (for lack of a better word) of quantum physics compared to straight science, it still comes across as parochial and Eurocentric in this regard. I'd like to read a book with the same title written by someone who has genuine knowledge of yoga and its philosophies, aimed at improving the lives of the rest of us (who arent physics nerds.)』
(A different angle on time) 『As a mental health professional, I recognized Wolf's context of going into the past, since I have led many clients into the past by recreating experiences that hurt them and gave a poor perception of the world. When I take them back, I can have them re-look at the experience from the ones who caused the hurt so they realize the context of the action, and that it was not meant to hurt them at all or as badly as it did. Wolf's concept of recreating the past event fits nicely with his proposed use of time travel into the past.
Regarding time travel in the future, Wolf talks about being open to future ideas, and reminded me of a time when I wrote "from the top of my mind," which led to ideas I had not heard of before. The experience sounded very similar to his description of future time travel.
Finally, the romantic idea of getting into a contraptions and actually going back or forward for an "in person" visit was discouraged by the book, but the realistic use of time travel became much more down to earth and usable. The experiences of reaching timelessness through meditation I have experienced and his descriptions are right on target.
The reader will be pleasantly surprised with all of what goes into making up "spacetime" and how the concept of linear time came about. I have a much fuller understanding of types of time and the beginning of an understanding of it. Very readable and interesting for the non-scientist.』 『Fred Alan Wolf, theoretical physicist, uses an ancient Hindu meditative technique, that draws on yoga and quantum physics to show that time is a flexible projection of mind.』

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Yoga chanting mantras) 『While looking for another book on chanting mantras, I came across this one. This is a wonderful book - well researched and well written. Paul grew up in India and spent 5 years in an ashram so he not only knows the facts and the culture and beliefs but has a real feel for presenting his subject in an easy to understand manner. You don't have to know Hatha Yoga to do yoga chanting but you might want to after reading this book. And you don't have to understand every single thing he writes about before you start your own chanting. Included with the book is an instructional CD which is helpful if you're unfamiliar with the pronunciations of the hindu/sanskrit words.』
(Om sweet Om.....) 『Chanting is an art - and for those of us from a Western background, it can feel a bit otherworldy or "foreign". I have always been interested in chanting and mantras but too intimidated to try it.
Russill Paul has put together a book and CD set that helps to demystify chanting and make it more accessible for all audiences - no matter what your spiritual or ethnic background. This well written book clearly explains the basics and theories behind chanting - and it provides exercises to get you started immediately.
These exercises help anyone to begin chanting in a confident manner. I am tone deaf and have no musical talent whatsoever - yet I am able now to practice mantras with a keener ear. I am already feeling the effects! (Hindu mantras are believed to help with many issues from removing obstacles, spiritual advancement and even mundane problems.)
The Yoga of Sound is a practical book which can get you on your way to a daily mantra practice. I would also recommend the books by Thomas Ashley Farrand as a supplement to this book. That being said, Paul's book seems to be more complete and I felt more inspired by it.』
(Wonderfully Written, Authentic Spirituality) 『I was required to buy this book for a class I was taking at the university entitled "Religion and Music". My professor was Dr. Don Beck who is an expert on this topic and has produced both a published book and a cd of Hindu devotional music. The book came highly recommended from him, and now that I have read it I would wholeheartedly agree! This is a wonderful book regardless of what spiritual path you are on, and in particular if you are looking for a way to re-entergize your own practice. The book explains how one can use the power of mantra as a spiritual practice, and it is written by an author who has both a Christian and Hindu background. He thoughtfully incorporates aspects of many religious traditions to accomodate all readers, and he is thoroughly knowledgable on this subject. He writes clearly and simply, and at the same time he gets you excited about the subject matter. Honestly, I thought this book was going to be filled with New Age fluff, but it offers genuine advice on how to practically get started with this wonderful practice of reciting mantras. I was pleasantly surprised, and I think anyone with an interest in deep religion or music will greatly enjoy this book.』
(sound magic) 『I had the privilege of taking a workshop with Russill in the summer of 2004, which is how I was introduced to his work. His excellent book "The Yoga of Sound" has proved highly complementary to that experience, but it is also a powerful work with no trouble standing on its own.
Yoga has become extremely popular in the Western world, but the aspect of yoga that focuses on the power of sound - the power of mantra and chant - has not transfered as well from the realms of Hindu mysticism. The book explores the reasons for this and sets the practice of mantra in a wider context, adaptable not only to those from any religious and spiritual background but to the hectic pace of modern life. Mantra is brought further into a 21st-century setting through the accessible and fascinating discussions of quantum physics as they apply to sound. The book is also a practical manual, teaching the reader how to use yogic mantra with the help of an included CD.
Russill Paul is a truly gifted teacher, and his spirit of devotion and eagerness to share the joy of the power of mantra shine through in this beautifully written book.』
(Buy it, read it and read it again) 『I am particular, discriminating, and well read. If you really are interested in total spiritual development, especially with asanas, you'll read it and recommend it to others. I am waiting for paper back to come out so I can buy copies for all my teachers.』 『
Largely unknown in the West, yet developing alongside the popular form of Hatha Yoga that has swept the world, the Yoga of Sound is a 3,500-year-old spiritual system for reducing stress and maintaining health. Like Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, the Yoga of Sound offers potent sources of energy in the form of sonic formulae called mantras, or sacred chant. In this book and accompanying CD, musician and teacher Russill Paul explores the four powerful streams of this system: mantras (sound), mudras (sacred gestures), pranayama (breath control), and dhyana (meditation). Like his award-winning music, Russill Paul’s presentation of this ancient tradition makes it accessible for modern Western tastes and lifestyles. In lucid exercises presented both in the book and the CD, Russill shows how everyone can learn the art of mantra simply by training the voice. He shows how these practices can help reduce stress, enhance emotional well-being, and optimize the body’s energy flow.

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (A wonderful new yoga) 『This book is written such that someone with only a smattering of yoga background can understand the postures, but would be a bit confusing to someone with no background at all. Some of the poses are easy and provide immediate beneficial effects. Others are more difficult and bring a sense of accomplishment when they are finally attained. However, some yield almost no relief or are too difficult to attain without sufficient strength. The postures are all pictured individually with tips and instructions which are usually easy to follow and are grouped into levels of increasing difficulty. There are also suggested flows and tools for partners to develop their own. Overall, this book can guide beginners into developing greater flexibility and trust as well as suggest more difficult movements when partners are ready to advance.』
(Dissapointing, low budget) 『The cover is the beat part. Illustrations are low quality.

(Inspiring) 『This has offered a great number of new ideas for my own practice and classes. It has inspired me to create some of my own partner poses.』
(A Guide for Advanced Yogis) 『This book is beautifully written, with great photography, but leans more toward those who are young, strong, and agile. Many of the poses offered look more acrobatic than yogic, but if you can begin working on them while you are young, they might someday be accessible. There is usable information an older or less experienced person would be able to glean from the text, but much of it is simply out of reach for those who are less supple or farther along in years.』
(Very well done!) 『This is a beautifully written book with great pictures, it is very easy to understand and follow. There are lots of helpful tips, and information regarding the benefits of each pose. I taught a class using the book as my text, and the results were outstanding!』 『

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (New-agey and unscientific) 『This is the type of yoga book that brings yoga into ill repute among scientifically-minded people. It discusses chakras and yogic nutrition (based on balancing two "energies") as if they were facts. Yoga can be great for one's body and one's mind, but this book does not present it at its best.』
(Fantastic introductory book for those interested in yoga) 『Where to begin? This is the most comprehensive guide to Yoga for beginners I've ever seen. It delves into background, history, breathwork, meditation, spirituality (not religion--it explains the difference), and, of course, the asanas, or poses. The information is interesting and lively, striking a nice balance between depth and simplicity. It's straightforward and clear, but with a playful tone.
Key to any good yoga book is a wide variety of asanas, or poses, to keep you interested. This book has several chapters including standing poses, balance poses, bends, inversions, and more. The information it provides is extensive and impressive.
Each posture includes at least one drawing of the properly-performed posture, and sometimes more than one showing it from different sides or angles. Often there are illustrations of posture variations, and sometimes there are ones showing you what not to do.
The asanas include warnings about things to watch out for and contra-indicated conditions, as well as variations for easing into the postures, or simpler/less stressful variations in case you simply can't do the full asana. Many of them also include more challenging variations as well, for once you've mastered the standard pose.
The authors' vinyasanas include a warming series, a high-energy series, and a mild/calming series. There are also several series for workouts of a particular length, including three five-minute sessions for when you only have a few minutes here or there, three 15-minute sessions, and a 30-minute and one hour session. Even better, the book includes instructions to help you construct your own vinyasanas!
All in all I'd say this is the perfect book for the beginner, or for someone who wants a full and thorough introduction to the world of yoga.』
(Everything you always wanted to know. . .) 『i read this book for my book club, and the meeting of the club included a yoga class. It is VERY thorough. I liked the "ouch" boxes, which remind the reader that the goal is not to hurt oneself, or to push beyond one's limits. There is perhaps more of the philosophy than I might have wanted, but this would be a reader's personal preference. Photos very helpful.』
(Great for beginners) 『I recently got the urge to try yoga and figured a good place to start would be this book. I was right! It's written for anyone, it's instructions are easy to read and follow and the illustrations are great. They also sprinkle it with a little humor to lighten things up. They make learning yoga less intimidating and make it more likely for you to actually try it and keep doing it. If you're wondering about yoga and don't know where to start, then this is for you.』
(Does not meet expectations) 『I picked up this book with great expectations. The book does not necessarily shatter all that, but must say am not much impressed. Some breathing techniques appeared to be inaccurate while most yoga postures are not for real starters. Also, step-by-step posture with better and more pictures would be really good. In general, I think this deserves average rating.』 『Completely restructured to focus more on the how-to components of yoga, this step-by-step guide replaces photos with all-new two-color line illustrations that not only show readers what the various yoga postures look like, but how to get in and out of them easily and painlessly. Non- intimidating and easy-to-follow exercises show readers just how fun and relaxing yoga can be.』

(This book has been a nice tool as a yoga teacher) 『I love this deck. The descriptive saying were a nice tool to incorporate into my language during my classes to help my student feel a pose in a different way. Rodney's form is beautiful and inspirational. This deck was useful at the beginning in outlining my class, and memorizing the sanskrit names. I still like to thumb through to deck before class to remind me of a pose that I haven't taught in a while. I've now graduated to doing his videos to work on my own practice.』
(Great tool for practice) 『This deck has helped me stay with more yoga practice more than any other tool;more than videos, books, tapes. I can design a practice that is very short for busy days or an intensive practice when I have the time. I can also spend as much time on one asana as I like before moving on, a limitation of video tapes. I used this deck when I recently traveled to a third world country where electronic equipment was not available. The cards concept is a wonderful idea for any practice.』
(Great tool for your yoga practice) 『Rodney Yee's yoga card set is wonderful. Each of the cards (well made on thick, coated cardstock) has a wonderful, clear photograph of Mr. Yee in the pose, the name of the pose, recommended time for each pose, and a description/reminder of what one should be looking for in the pose. (Part of the "Feel" listing for Happy Baby Pose: "Keep your feet directly over your knees, and let them be awake and vibrant. Keep your chest broad...") The back of the card has a mediative quote. The cards are numbered and placed in order of groupings: preparatory, standing, twists, back bends, seated, forward bends, and restorative. The deck also includes suggested sequence cards for continuing your practice.
The deck has been perfect for travel.
While these cards are wonderful and easy enough for a beginner, I would encourage ANYONE beginning their yoga practice to seek out a class in their area. Taking classes with a qualified instructor (even if only a few) will help you greatly in your practice. Body awareness is a key to long, injury-free practice, and that 'understanding' is impossible to get from a dvd, book or card set. No matter what you age, size, or level of ability I encourage you to try yoga. It will change your life. Good Luck!』

I read the reviews that were posted too and decided to see for myself. I paid the price, got the book, read the book and did the exercise. The immediate effect was a dramatic increase in my mental acuity and concentration which continued throughout the day. Per the book's suggestion, I'm doing it daily 7 times in the morning and 7 times at night; takes less than a minute. I have to say that my mental functioning continues to feel dramatically improved and that's worth a heck of a lot more than $25 to me. A single exercise with this degree of efficacy and power deserves to be presented in a beautiful package. I recommend the book because it has more information than the AARP blurb. It provides a support that will aide you in incorporating it into your ongoing daily routine.』
(13 Sentence Explanation&A 2-Minute Exercise For $25?) 『Superbrain Yoga is a very simple exercise with purported powerful results that help people to become more alert, focused, and able to learn and remember.
This is a readable and short 4 chapter double spaced book with 14 pages dedicated to pictures. The meat of the book is contained in one paragraph. The remainder of the book is filler containing mostly testimonials and descriptions of major energy centers. I read it while watching the first half of a NCAA basketball game today.
I am 58 and not in the greatest of physical shape; however, I was able to perform the exercise in a matter of a few minutes without difficulty. I like to keep an open mind while reading being careful not to make judgments until I have had time to digest the material.
This book is way too many pages for its short message contained in 13 sentences on page 50. The only way I could justify paying the price for it is if Superbrain Yoga actually works. Supporting documents contained in the testimonials and some reviewers indicate it does. You might want to see for yourself. 』
(Could have been done in 25 pages) 『Although the promise was great, the text covered a relatively small range of material with a huge amount of verbiage. The focus was on a single technique. So I was disappointed in that I would have liked more for the $ I spent on the book. I got the technique itself from the AARP magazine and hoped the book would give me more.』
(highly effective) 『Master Choa is known for his ability to simplify highly complex and esoteric subjects. Superbrain yoga is a masterpiece of a technique. It transmutes sexual energy from the lower chakras and brings it up to the brain and nervous system. In English, this means that it highly energizes the brain and nervous system. This can help folks (particularly children and adolescents) become smarter, calmer, and more focused. It can help develop a stronger, healthier, more coordinated body. In my own son, it caused an unbelievably dramatic change in his athletic ability. In a certain sport in our local recreational league, he went from being the lowest draft pick one year to being near the top in the next year. Coaches on the opposing team were cheering him on, their jaws dropping open from seeing the transformation. He is now playing at a competitive AAU level. He has also noticed a marked improvement in clarity and focus as applied to his studies.
If you are looking for an easy yogic practice to increase overall energy level or libido, check out the 2 powerful energy-generating exercises found in "Your Hands Can Heal You" by Stephen Co and Eric Robins, MD.』
(Just One Exercise) 『On the positive side, the single exercise featured here is beautifully presented with colorful and detailed drawings. The exercise is clearly described in the text section. I have used it and found it very energizing.
Unfortunately, the rest of the text is an elementary review of the chakras and testimonials. It reads in large part like a term paper. In the testimonial section reference is made to Super Brain yoga exercises. I would have liked to see those other routines.
If you are expecting an in depth, detailed routine, you will be disappointed. If you would like to try a simple but effective exercise and find testimonials inspiring, this book is for you.』 『GrandMaster Choa Kok Sui Reveals an ancient Indian technique of increasing your brain power by harnessing the body's primordial energies. Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Refreshingly insightful) 『I found the overall discussion of the place of yoga in the modern world very relevant and thorough. Most books on yoga philosophy quote Patanjali and although in a relevant fashion, it is the questioning that one comes across not frequently enough. I think old philosophies need to be evaluated and modified to suit the needs of the times. As the Dalai Lama says if some philosophy does not make sense in terms of modern wisdom, scientific or otherwise, then we need to reevaluate it accordingly. Ganga White does bring up a similar idea and I think that is what I found to be the strong point of this book. Even in the discussion of the simple sitting posture White describes its physiological benefit and that is an appealing feature of this book to me. Leave aside the benefits of twists or inversions, the simple idea of the benefit of sitting down on the floor, off the chair makes lot of sense to me. Thanks Mr. White for the thoughts and ideas.』
(it does what it says in the title) 『I went to Ganga Whites teacher training at the White Lotus Foundation and this book really opened up my practice and prepared me for a life changing experience doing his teacher training. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who wants to take their practice further, start a personal practice, or just learn more about yoga.』
(A guide for Yoga users to enhance their experiences with their meditations and rituals) 『Yoga is not spiritual hooha; there is a scientific element to the healing it provides alongside the spiritual. "Yoga Beyond Belief: Insights to Awaken and Deepen Your Practice" is a guide for Yoga users to enhance their experiences with their meditations and rituals. Although aimed at those with some experience, "Yoga Beyond Belief" is simple enough for novices to read and learn the art. A top pick for community library spirituality collections. 』
(Starts slow...but get's much better) 『When I first started reading this book, it was hard to follow. The intro by Sting is a little disoriented and out-of-place. BUT---once I got past that and into the author's writing, it became GREAT. It clearly presents yoga and all of the benefits one can receive from the practice. Not a How To, but a Why To. I changed this review after getting through the first part--It actually deserves 4 stars.』
(Should be Required Reading for All Yoga Students) 『I have been teaching yoga for more than 33 years and have known Ganga White for most of that time. This much-awaited book shows clearly why he has had such a universal influence on so many. Dr. Andrew Weil referred to him as a "noted renegade yogi" and I agree that Ganga has been a frontrunner in questioning and challenging old traditions. I have always seen him as stating the obvious that others have not dared to vocalize. In statements such as "our understanding of spirituality needs to grow and evolve beyond the limits of tradition and ancient mappings" (page 204) Ganga tries to tell us to "grow outside the box" at a time when so many are now trying to emulate the East. For those new to yoga, he explains in clear, easy-to-understand language about many of the ancient concepts and aspects of yoga. An example is in his discussion of meditation. It is commonly thought that to meditate, one needs to learn how to sit for long periods and "empty the mind" or focus on a mantra. But Ganga frees the reader from these boundaries by explaining that "...innner silence is still only one petal of the flowering mind...a questioning mind, an intelligent mind,a flexible mind, an open mind...these are just a few of the myriad valuable capacities of the mind" (page 172-3)and he suggests sometimes walking out in a forest to appreciate nature instead of just sitting. Simple. Obvious. Along with his charming stories, Ganga makes this book not only thought-provoking but also fun to read.I encourage all my students to read it and hope that others will do the same. This book is a gem and I recommend it to anyone who wants to "stand on the shoulders of the past to find out how we can see a bit farther." (page 11)』 『Yoga Beyond Beliefoffers a unique vision of contemporary yoga. It integrates scientific and practical approaches providing a much-needed integrative perspective that complements existing yoga books for all levels and styles of yoga students. Serving up a collection of valuable insights gleaned from a lifetime of exploration, practice, study, and teaching by one of America’s pioneering and leading teachers of yoga, the book assists readers in making sense of the many discordant claims and teaching techniques that currently exist in the yoga world, freeing readers to pursue their own individual paths of yoga and personal practice. This is an essential text and reference for all yoga practitioners.
The book first sets a context for an open-minded and evolutionary approach to yoga practice, and then explains the core principles of the many branches of yoga. A clear foundation is given for how the physical practices of yoga work to produce remarkable results of health and well being. The chapter Injury, Pain, and Healing shows how to prevent injuries and how to heal injuries should they occur. The reader is given a wealth of sophisticated of tools, insights, and anecdotes gleaned from a lifetime of practice and teaching to develop, hone, and tune his or her personal yoga approach. This book makes yoga come alive for the reader.
The book concludes by going beyond the physical aspects to the heart of yoga. It illuminates and gives insight into the discovery of non-dogmatic forms and evolutionary approaches to meditation and spirituality. It presents a clear argument showing the pitfalls of regimented systems and how to make everything in daily life part of yoga practice and spiritual development.
Ganga White gives us his unique and creative perspectives on a time-tested discipline for a healthy and vital life. Entertaining and thoroughly readable, this book offers a coherent explication of yoga, its philosophy and practice. White’s integrative views will inspire beginners and accomplished yogis to trust their inner wisdom and creatively reassess their practice. He is a great storyteller and gives us his personal and creative perspective, breathing fresh air into an ancient discipline.Yoga Beyond Beliefoffers an original, integrative approach to body, mind, and spirit that is practical, inspiring, and full of valuable insights to enliven and inform anyone’s yoga practice.』
