(Appreciating Truth)
『The book arrived quickly and in the expected condition; I could tell it was used but very clean. It's just what I needed to continue my yoga home practice. Thanks you all!

Sue』

(Mastering the Basics)
『The book's title might be "Learning How To Do Yoga Without Turning Yourself Into A Pretzel. No doubt, Mastering the Basic is a better choice for the book's title. The trick to doing yoga is knowing the preliminary moves that eases one into the posture without strain or exertion. This book does just that with illustrations and concise easy to follow text printed next to the illustration.

Make no mistake about it, yoga can become "entwining" but this book stops short of that. From the most elementary posture one progresses to more complicated postures in what seems effortless. The result is, "Hey, look what I can do.".

Therefore knowing what to do and how to do it makes all the difference in the world in sticking with your yoga practice and this book does exactly that. If you ever wanted to learn how to do yoga this book would be a big help in getting you started down that path.』

(Great foundation for yoga practice)
『I am reviewing the DVD which has two programs: Flexibility Strength and Balance and Deepen&Strengthen.

This dvd is great for beginners. You are lead through a series of warm-ups that are basic to all yoga moves. You learn how to move and hold the body which is essential for a good yoga foundation. There are two sessions. I prefer the Flexibility session to the Deepen and Strengthen.
The 2nd session makes you hold the positions for long periods. The young woman demonstrating the moves is Amazing! This is probably "old school" for many people, but without the foundation, you might as well just be exercising. Not for every day use, but great when I don't feel like twisting my spine into a pretzel.』

(Just what it says)
『I feel this book does what it says, covers the basics. It's easy to read and the pictures clearly show each pose. There is more to read than expected, and it is all beginner-friendly¬ over-kill at all. A good book that provides exactly what it says it will.』

(A must for Yoga students and teachers alike)
『This Hatha Yoga manual is authentic, clear, thorough, precise and well illustrated. For each posture, there is at least one illustrative photo. All the postures are scientifically sequenced. As a Yoga student of the same tradition, I recommend this book to all Yoga students and teachers without reservation.』
『This book covers all aspects of yoga practice including postures, breathing, relaxation, meditation, lifestyle and fundamental philosophy. Provides two illustrated posture sequences and has 420 photographs.』

(Yoga books)
『I have been teaching yoga to an older group and this has helped me teach them safely with props, and keep them interested in learning new techniques without fear.』

(Yoga for 50+)
『For a 58 year old woman who takes Yoga classes with much younger people, this is a wonderful book that gives me alternative moves and use of props for this older body.』

(Not what I expected, but good for what it is.)
『I suppose it's my fault, what I really needed was 'yoga for 70+' to help me with the Gentle Yoga class I teach.

This book doesn't really address the age-related concerns I run into with my older students, like how to work around hip replacements and osteoporosis, what to substitute for inversions when a student has glaucoma, etc. But, like I said, my students are well over age 50 (I'm nearly 50 myself) so it's my fault for expecting too much.

The poses and prop variations it teaches are what I use in all my classes for less-flexible students of all ages. From that perspective, though, it's a fine book with clear instruction&illustration.』

(Not worth it.)
『I can honestly say i'm very disappointed with this book. I expected to actually learn more about about poses (especially for the elderly) As a yoga instructor myself i found this book to be horrible i would never recommend it for a beginner. Yes, the poses are for beginners but what the book fails to do is explain these poses, and what prep poses to do. Not once did the book mention the four points of contact on the foot to help with balance it fails to remind the reader to make sure there archs are not collapsing, it lacks tellin readers about the common mistakes that are done in certain poses. I would not recommend it if you are a beginner or a yoga instructor, searchin for modiifications.』

(Keep the Yoga Fire Burning After 50!)
『This modest looking book by Richard Rosen, a master yogi over 50, offers lots of practical tips for older beginners and their teachers. I especially recommend this book to younger yogis who are looking for ways to teach yoga safely to their parents and grandparents. Add this book to your yoga library to keep the yoga fire stoked over the long haul!
--Suza Francina, author, The New Yoga for People Over 50 and Yoga and the Wisdom of Menopause.』

As baby boomers pass age 50, problems with knees, ankles, and backs are leading them into lower-impact forms of fitness. The stress of career and later-in-life children also have them seeking new ways to relax. Combine these pressures and it is no surprise that yoga is increasing in popularity among the 50-plus crowd. Tailored specifically for this burgeoning population,50+ Yogaoffers a straightforward approach that makes it easy to learn yoga at any age.

The book's adaptable program allows readers in good shape to experience a challenging workout, while people with physical limitations benefit from gentler postures, breathing exercises, and meditation practices. Throughout the book, the author focuses on the needs of older beginning students, providing tips for moving comfortably into a pose, avoiding injury, and using helpful props, such as chairs, foam blocks, and cotton straps.

The author details the basic principles of yoga and teaches the common elements of all postures and movements: alignment, breath, and awareness. However, the vast majority of the book is devoted to teaching the yoga poses through the use of step-by-step photos, clearly written instructions, and helpful hints from the author.

(The Yoga of Eating)
『This book should be read by everyone who eats! Read it and pass it on!』

(Healing food for the mind!)
『I'd like to second the reviewer who wrote... "if we lived in a sane world, this book would be a bestseller".
And we can only hope that this day will come!

If you have ever felt confused about how to make sense of the contradictory recommendations of all the external dietary authorities out there as to what "eating healthy" involves, this book could really change your life. It is all about learning to access and trust our body's great intelligence and messages about what we each need to eat, rather than preferring to trust the blanket prescriptions and advice of all kinds of external authorities or traditions. This book offers profound (and I really mean profound) reflections about the relationship between food and consciousness, between our eating practices and our spiritual growth (as individuals and a society). It totally challenges the very foundations of our current culture... which is very much at war with our bodies. It offers a very inspiring and surprisingly simple alternative.

I just loved this book. Reading it was an exhilarating, liberating and healing experience all at once.
While it definitely goes against the grain, it offers the kind of simple and elegant truth that one ends up immediately recognizing as right on!』

(The Yoga of Eating)
『This book is brilliant, and the man who wrote it has the awareness of a sage. I found myself reading it like I would a John Grisham novel....... with anticipation of what the next page would reveal. Now, I need to go back and savor the profound knowledge Eisenstein has given those of us who have struggled for years with eating and weight loss. It is the first book on weight that doesn't deal with right and wrong. Most of us who have had to deal with body image and weight know exactly what I am talking about. We are our own worse critics.
Eisenstein has a vast knowledge of health and nutrition overall. However, that isn't his focus. His point of view puts the individual in charge of listening to his or her own unique body's wisdom as a guide and resource. For the first time in years, I feel hopeful that I can have a healthy relationship with my body.』

(Awareness rather than a diet)
『This book is not about ayurveda or following any other diet program, and does not include recipes or identify what you should eat. The author offers suggestions about how to bring more awareness to your eating habits and life. His solution is to stop forcing your body to conform to the mind or the latest diet strategy. Instead, pay as much attention as possible to each aspect of eating, from "Am I hungry?" to savoring each bite to listening for when the body is satisfied. If the bite doesn't taste good, then the body doesn't need it or want it. He addresses and proposes ideas for cravings, including theories for psychological understanding.

For the more spiritually evolved, he confronts the idea that enlightened people eat vegan, or survive only on air, etc. Just because an enlightened person eats only vegetables doesn't mean that eating only vegetables makes you enlightened. The author suggests that that your body will tell you when you're vegetarian, not your mind. There's even a nice essay about eating meat versus eating vegan from a consciousness evolution and cultural impact perspective.

He offers a highly conscious perspective for those seeking to bring more awareness to their lives. If you're open to the idea of accessing your body's own intelligence or intuition and looking for perspectives to move you further along, then this book will be valuable. If you're looking to be told what to eat, look elsewhere.』

(Illuminates the Body/Mind/Spirit of Eating.)
『Readers of today's diet and nutrition books face bewildering and contradictory advice. Eisenstein's gift is to help us cut through all the mental chatter and learn to trust in the higher authority of our own bodies. As we cultivate this inner wisdom, we will learn to distinguish artificial addictions from authentic appetites and identify foods that not only bring us great pleasure but support our quest for health. As a student of yoga, I love this profoundly simple book.』
『The Yoga of Eating is a practical and inspiring manual that offers original insights on the physical and spiritual functions of sugar, fat, meat, and other foods; fasting, dieting, processing, willpower, and the deeper principles of self-nurture. This book appeals to a higher authority--your own body--and shows how to access and trust the wisdom your body has to offer.』

(seriously fantastic)
『this one has proven superbly useful to me throughout my practice thus far (when it wasn't serious, and when it turned serious). the illustrations and photos are incredibly handy; and coupled with all of the descriptions of how to progress through basic to advanced variations of poses, this book is an incredibly comprehensive approach to beginning a serious home yoga practice.

+there's a chapter on breathing with a variety of depictions ranging from basic to advanced.
+lays out basic poses into a beginner/maintenance routine on a chart.』

(Complete)
『I have a previous version of this book science 1992. Its been the foundation for my practice. I have dwelled into other schools of YOGA like ashtanga, but this practice is always from where I start every time I come from a break. The book also covers the basics of pranayama, meditation, nutrition and other things that go hand in hand with Hatha Yoga. The Sivananda School of though is concentrated on holding an asana and relaxing, controlling the breathing and meditating while holding it.』

(The proper way)
『Despite the ridiculous advice in the review "Approach traditional hatha yoga like Sivananda Yoga with extreme caution. In only a little time, you too can develop a degree of flexibility that can directly cause a loss of stability in your spine, in turn causing long lasting health issues. Strength and flexibility are not incompatible, but it is very easy and tempting to pursue yoga as your only fitness program, at the expense of strength, stability, muscular, and cardiovascular endurance. This is not a good health and fitness strategy for most folks. " -this book is just fabulous. If you're performing the asanas properly, as this book clearly details, then there is no risk of your back getting so flexible you will loose stability in your spine. In fact, if your doing the asanas in the proper fashion, in the order this book detail, then the strength of your spine will increase dramatically, not loose stability. That is simply ridiculous. It sounds like a weight trainer/strength trainer loosing clients to a yoga class. Yes, it's true there are plenty of weekend trained yoga instructors that don't know what they are doing, but this book is not one of them. It is simply the best methodical approach to Yoga I have yet read, and tells you why one posture follows another in a particular order, increasing strength and flexibility. Also, the "cardiovascular" benefit mentioned in the review, or supposed lack thereof, is simply not true if these asanas are performed with the proper breathing techniques and meditation. Whatever "study" the reviewer is supposedly sighting is clearly flawed. My own experience, verified by my doctor and several cardiologists, is to keep doing what I'm doing for such overall excellent cardiovascular health (which I have not always had). That would be Yoga, derived not from a class, but at home, from this fine volume. Read it thoroughly to understand the underlying principles, then do it, every day. You will not be disappointed.』

(a lifestyle not just an exercise)
『I have been interested in yoga since my teen years, I do the asanas, but wanted more. This book is part of my "more".
I am going slowly with this book and instructions are not always easy or to me, at least, complete. I lead a contmeplative lifestyle and realize that body, mind and spirit are all connected. I am not interested in public displays of fashionable yoga clothing, hot new teachers, going to yoga spas. I choose to do with less, since I need less, my wants are losing appeal for me. I am vegan for the health of animals, and attempt to live a "do no harm" life, part of "do no harm" includes taking care of myself at a deeper level and respecting my body, mind and spirit.
If you want an exercise book, this is not it. If you want the begining of a lifestyle change, go with this path....promises to be quite the journey.

(A very good complete yoga book)
『I'm a yoga teacher and I love this book!I got this book for my Yoga Teacher Training as a book we had to have. This book goes over everything you need for a yoga lifestyle. It's really informative about alot of different points. It has lots of pictures for reference. The instructions on how to get into the poses are very easy. The only thing I don't like is how much emphasis they put on the headstand. First, in the sequence that they reccomend the headstand is one of the few first poses you should do. I was taught to do it towards the end of practice. Plus constantly doing the headstand is actually not good for you. It has it's benefits but you can over do the headstand pose. Overall it's a really great book and everyone who practices yoga should have this.』

(A Monumental work)
『When I got the book from Amazon, I was all pumped up to read and finish the book as quickly as possible. I also was determined not to rush thru the pages without understanding everything in depth. But when I reached 200+ pages, I realized that it is such a monumental work and it would take its own course towards completion, however I might try to "drink-it-all-at-once" and whatever be my enthusiasm.

A few days I was able to understand and proceed faster and for many days I was stuck in a single page contemplating the meaning. The truth is that the contents of the book gradually grew on me and any effort on my side was just to aid it. The tons of stories, allegorical statements, profound sayings found in the book have affected me very deep inside that I can only admire it in wonder as to how it all happened inspite of me. Venkatesananda's command over the stuff he's talking about is evident in every word contained in the book.

I can only be thankful for everything that helped me in buying this book.』

(Fractal Hinduism)
『Vasistha's Yoga, supposedly the third longest book in the world, appears in this concise edition, superbly translated and deflowered, which is to say that it steers clear of Platonic, Aristotelean and Judeo-Christian biases while excising the poetic, Kalidasa-esque sections. As for the work itself, it forces its reader to get practical with his or her view of the spiritual - no "love and light" allowed - while at the same time undermining the solidity of the material. The format is one of stories, within stories within stories, interspersed with Upanishad-like instruction, which makes for a very compelling read. One caveat: a danger to uncritical, spiritual escapists.』

(Great Book)
『This book is an amazing book full of knowledge and Truth. This book stretches your mind beyond any imagination and helps in breaking all the mental barriers. I have read only 100 pages so far but I Love it.』

(Best Book Ever Written)
『Reading this not only can change dramatically your cosmovision, but can let you undertand the secrets and the enigmas of the Universe and human existance. There's no doubt. This book was inspired by GOD himeself.』

(Best of the best)
『This book is not for the beginers in this field (Just a caution). People who need to know the ultimate truth about this so called universe and who is already well versed in the scriptures should be able to understand what exactly the author means. Please do not interpret it wrongly and please clarify if you are not sure, with people of higher wisdom.』

(On the Translation of the HathaYogaPradipika)
『Overall, this text is an excellent resource for the aspirant on the path of yoga. I highly recommend this text; along with an in depth study of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras.

I spent a few months reading the Sanskrit, the English, and discussing the content of this short text at the Yoga Society of San Francisco with a world-renowned scholar of Sanskrit. We not only used Akers translation, but we also used 2 other translations. Of all the translations I have read, I have found that Akers translation is the most accurate. However, the only drawback of this text is that it doesn't have the transliteration. It goes from Devanâgarî to the English. Thus, folks who cannot read the Devanâgarî of Sanskrit will find it challenging. But if you have no interest in reading Sanskrit and just want to read the English you are fine. My only advice is that before you perform the exercises in Chapters 2, 3, and 4, I suggest you seek out a guru who is a master of these practices. Because like most exercise routines they may vary depending on one's unique constitution and where one is on their spiritual journey.

Review by Nârâyaa (Anthony) Biduck, Co-Creator of Urban Yogis [...]

(The classical Hatha Yoga Manual with Sanskrit&English)
『This is a unique translation of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. Sometime in the 15th Century, Yogi Svatmarama put down his principals of the practice of Yoga. Many of these include the mysteries of Kundalini --the coiled center of energy close to the base of the spine. But there is a lot more here for the student of yoga, including photos of the various "asanas" or positions, health, diet and mental hygiene. If you read Sanskrit, this would be a treasure. If you don't, you still have a line-by-line translation of this ancient and honored work. It's like listening to the yogi himself as he lectures his disciples. Fascinating reading--and if you are a practicing yogi or yogini, you'll find this insightful.』

(Closest thing to a "source code" that we have)
『The two best known English translations of Svatmarama's classical text on yoga from the Fifteenth Century are by Pancham Singh and Elsy Becherer. The former is 87 years old and the latter is a translation (with commentary by Hans-Ulrich Rieker) from the German, and is therefore twice removed from the original Sanskrit. Both books are out of print. Surprisingly there is virtually nothing else in English despite the fact that the hatha yoga teachings found in popular works, including B.K.S. Iyengar's celebrated Light on Yoga, are in no small part based on Svatmarama's text.

Brian Dana Akers brings us a new translation set with the English following the Sanskrit verse by verse. His style is straightforward, clear and elegant. He does not make the mistake of trying to translate yogic terms that are really not translatable, e.g., "nadi," "prana," "bandha," "mudra," etc. Instead he invites us to use a dictionary of yoga. He also makes the sly suggestion in his brief but graceful Introduction that "the scientifically minded do some empirical research. In a peaceful country, in a quiet place, free of all anxieties..." (p. xii)

Well, I have done some small research and I can tell you that Svatmarama knows whereof he speaks. I can also say along with Akers that I do not recommend some of Svatmarama's practices, (some of the "cleansing" mudras are unnecessary today; indeed they are dangerous) and clearly the old master exaggerates. However, his intention was not hyperbole. He spoke instead in what is called an "intentional language" that would guide teachers and advanced practitioners without confusing or revealing too much to beginners. This way of speaking is also called samdhya-bhasha ("twilight language") according to Georg Feuerstein. Thus a practice that allows one to become "young, even if old" may be distinguished from another practice that "destroys death," which in turn may be distinguished from one which leads to the place where "time is not."

Even though I first encountered the text almost 25 years ago and have read it several times, I did indeed find a dictionary helpful. I used Georg Feuerstein's definitive The Shambhala Encyclopedia of Yoga (1997), but could have also used an English-Sanskrit dictionary to explore the more secular meanings of some words, which might have given me a better feel for some of the nuances of expression used by Svatmarama. To really appreciate Svatmarama's text perhaps this from Feuerstein might be helpful: "Language has the curious capacity to both disclose and veil the truth, and since ancient times the masters of India's spirituality have been especially sensitive to the possibilities and the limitations of linguistic communication." (Opus cited, p. 167) Rather than throw himself into the briar patch of Svatmarama's expression, Akers has wisely stepped to the side and let the text speak for (and against) itself.

But what is the Hatha Yoga Pradipika? It is simply a course in how to obtain samadhi, or liberation or freedom from the pairs of opposites that dominate our lives. It begins with asana and pranayama and ends with transcendence. All of the postures so familiar to us, and all of the breathing exercises have but one purpose: meditation leading to pushing aside the veil of ignorance that characterizes ordinary existence. It takes a long time to get there. The "empirical research" that Akers recommends will be a project of years (unless of course one is particularly gifted).

What is not mentioned in Svatmarama's delineation are the ethical and spiritual considerations called the yamas and niyamas that we find in Patanjali. I recommend that the Hatha Yoga Pradipika be studied in conjunction with Patanjali's celebrated sutras as aids to your practice. They have much in common, but there are some significant differences. Svatmarama makes no concessions to political correctness nor to social or religious considerations. His text is indeed striking in its terse and single-minded, even profane, ambition. Quite simply there is a problem: bondage to samsara. And there is a solution: hatha yoga leading to raja yoga leading to liberation.

Brian Dana Akers and the people at YogaVidya are to be complimented for bringing this text to the general public and for doing so in a most attractive manner. This is the book you want after you have finished with the popular texts.』

(Features the original Sanskrit side-by-side with English)
『Ably translated into English by Brian Dana Akers, The Hatha Yoga Pradipika is the classic sourcebook on Hatha Yoga, written by an East Indian yoga master named Svatmarama in the fifteenth century C.E. to preserve for future generations his own experience and the wisdom of older works now lost. This faithful reproduction of the crucial text features the original Sanskrit side-by-side with the exacting English translation. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika reads as a selection of individual phrases describing the hatha yoga poses and giving insight into the spiritual nature of yoga. Black-and-white photographs illustrate several of the poses. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika is an impressive and highly recommended reference for students and devoted practitioners of Hatha Yoga.』
『This affordable, definitive edition of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika contains the original Sanskrit, a new English translation, and full-page photographs of all the asanas. 『A really intensive beginning guide for students so that they can improve their yoga through understanding (anatomy, philosphy, spirituality are all included). Well done Gregor.』

(An excellent pick for any new age collection.)
『ASHTANGA YOGA: PRACTICE AND PHILOSOPHY is the first of its kind covering all eight limbs of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, and comes from a yogi who describes its history, the basic movements, and posture using photos, written instruction and even anatomical illustrations. Details on myth and philosophy accompany insights on techniques and are accented with black and white photos throughout, making for an excellent pick for any new age collection.』

(Excellent resource tool for the yogi.)
『This is not just another 'how to do yoga yourself' book, but a thorough study of both the postures and philosophy of Ashtanga yoga. At a time when almost every well-known teacher has their own 'brand' of yoga, Mr. Maehle goes back to the source to both explain the foundation of the practice and the philosophy that supports the physical practice.
Almost all western practictioners come to yoga as a form of excerise and are unaware of the philosophy from which the physical practice developed. This book covers both in accessable language and explanation. Serious student will want to have this as a resource and serious Ashtangis will find it invaluable along with D. Swenson's Practice Manual. Ashtanga Yoga: The Practice Manual: An Illustrated Guide to Personal Practice』

(Ashtanga Yoga)
『In the western world, yoga is often viewed as a great way to exercise- perfect for flexibility and stress management. It is that. However, in our ignorance, we are only getting part of the benefits of this practice.

True yoga is not only about the physical positions it is also about the philosophy. Without the philosophy, the forms have no context or meaning. Moreover, without this balance, students may actually be causing themselves and their bodies harm.

Ashtanga Yoga is an important resource for anyone who wishes to practice yoga. It blends practice and philosophy together for fuller understanding. Some of the best extras in this book include photographs of each posture, colour illustrations of the muscle groups used in each movement, and line by line interpretation of the Yoga Sutra.』

(Top Notch Ashtanga Resource)
『Astanga Yoga Practice and Philosophy by Gregor Maehle is the most thorough exploration of the various aspects of Ashtanga Yoga available today and a valuable resource for all yoga teachers and practitioners. In this book, Gregor extensively explains the fundamental techniques of breath, bandhas and drishti and makes a comprehensive study of each posture of the Primary Series, complemented by clear and informative anatomical illustrations, photos and descriptions.(Examples and links to excerpts appear below the buy button) He also shows how minor adjustments can make a big difference and how growth in one posture will benefit the execution of other postures. Additional information on the mythological background and yogic context of specific postures enhances and enlivens the text. The book does not stop there, however.
Gregor shows how Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali are an organic whole by clearly detailing how the 8 limbs are practiced within the Ashtanga Vinyasa system. Included in the book are sections about the deep influence of Yogic philosophy on the development of human society and Gregor's own transmission of and insights into the Yoga Sutras, informed by his extensive consultation with ancient texts.
This large format paperback book has 300 pages and weighs over 2 pounds. I am sure it will benefit all teachers and students of yoga who read it.』
