(Great teacher, but not for everyone.)

『I've been practicing yoga for a couple of years regularly now. I consider myself a beginner but wanted to venture into the more challenging Ashtanga series as I've heard so much about it. Many of my friends have said it has changed their lives.

I was somewhat disappointed by this DVD, and it isn't in heavy rotation on my player. Part of the problem is the first 5 minutes. There is a series of traditional chanting, but no explanation of what the chanting is or what it means, or why we should bother to do it. There are other vaguely wise-sounding hippyish comments that I found hard to relate to or connect to.

In contrast with something like Bryan Kest's Power Yoga series (which certainly has its overly cheesy moments), I felt this DVD was totally targeted to people who live on organic farm co-ops who have copies of Siddhartha on their bookshelves. While there is nothing wrong with this, sounds nice in a lot of ways, many North Americans living in urban settings cannot immediately be coerced to "om" and speak Hindi confusedly in their overpriced lofts after a 10 hour workday. She continues to mention terms that experienced yogis may know, but she doesn't explain to the "beginners" she advertises to on the front of the box.

I like wisdom and spiritualism, but not wrapped in a hippy packaging I can't really relate to. Her voice, as well, maintains a sober monotone alto throughout the video. There is something too dire about it despite the beautiful beach setting.

If you have more patience than me and a very strong desire to learn the Ashtanga style, or you enjoy the more traditional approach repleat with chanting and specific terminology, then this video is for you. If you have a hard time appropriating ancient cultural elements that you are unfamiliar with, or you find that you'd like a teacher who can articulate ancient wisdom in a very easy to stomach manner, I'd reccomend Bryan Kest's DVD instead. It's one I play often, and even though he wears cutoff denim shorts, I feel a hekuvalot better after a class.』
