IPhone 3G used's review (Yoga's history, branches, and therapeutic uses) 『This excellent documentary, aimed especially at Western practitioners of hatha yoga, explores the origins and development of yoga, the branches of yoga, the transmission of yoga to the West, and the uses of yoga for health and healing. The film includes commentary by an impressive array of yoga teachers, scholars, MDs, and others (including B. K. S. Iyengar, Rodney Yee, Georg Feuerstein, and Jon Kabat-Zinn) and historical footage of some important twentieth-century teachers (including Krishnamacharya and Indra Devi).
The film is divided into five parts on two discs. Disc One (142 min.) opens with a segment on the contemporary practice of yoga in the West (11 min.).
Part 1, "ORIGINS OF YOGA" (23 min.), covers the Indus Valley civilization, the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Bhagavadgita, and the Yoga sutras. (I've used this part and the beginning of part 2 in teaching Hinduism to undergraduates.)
Part 2, "BRANCHES OF YOGA" (46 min.), begins with good explanations of bhakti yoga, karma yoga, jnana yoga, and raja (ashtanga) yoga. Then there's a discussion of yogic views of the human body/mind that isn't clearly tied in with what precedes or follows it, followed by a brief and unilluminating discussion of tantra and a rather abstract discussion of kundalini yoga. Part 2 closes with a good, detailed exploration of hatha yoga.
Part 3, "YOGA'S PASSAGE FROM EAST TO WEST" (16 min.), covers the Asiatic Society, the Transcendentalists, the 1893 World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago, and Swami Vivekananda.
Part 4, "MODERN YOGA" (46 min.), profiles five teachers who were instrumental in reviving and shaping hatha yoga in the twentieth century and introducing it to the West: Krishnamacharya, Indra Devi, Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, and Desikachar. (I think parts 3 and 4 will mainly be of interest to yoga devotees who've already heard of some of these teachers and to scholars of contemporary Hinduism or Asian religions in the West.)
Part 5, "YOGA AS THERAPY" (56 min.), is basically a separate film. (It's the only part on the second disc, and it has its own opening credits.) IPhone 3G used's review (Excellent yoga mat!) 『This is quite a wonderful mat. I needed a mat that had a very strong grip on it and I chose this mat for that reason. My hands and feet tend to sweat during practice and I don't move at all on this mat. Even in down dog, I am SO much more comfortable and can concentrate on my breath much easier without my hands continually slipping. I have the sedona red, and I think it is beautiful.
Pros: Durable, Eco-friendly, very non-slip, beautiful colors, comfortable, for every mat sold they plant a tree.
Cons: Heavy- but this doesn't particularly bother me. Must step off to the side to do certain balancing poses like Tree because the cushion makes it difficult to balance.
Overall, the cons don't bother me because I have not yet found a mat that works better for me than this one. I just wanted to say, It's about TIME we have a yoga dvd designed for surfers! I've been a yoga teacher in Southern Cali for almost 10 years now and have had SO many surfers come in complaining of shoulder and back issues due to surfing. I got this in a green leaf pattern, which I love. I use it with Gaiam's regular 1/4" thick yoga mat and the straps of the sling are long, but it works fine. Also, I'm 5'8" and the ball is too small for me. I was disappointed to find that this kit came with a VHS tape, who even uses VHS anymore? It certainly doesn't feel like I got my money's worth.』

(Great Kit!) 『Based on the price and quality, this is a fantastic kit for someone beginning to use balance/stability/fitness balls. For this price, you're getting the ball, pump, mat, and a very basic instructional video. Most balls of this quality are priced higher than this for just the ball!
The ball itself is perfect for petite consumers - if you're over 5'5" or so, please get a 65 or 75 cm ball, depending on your height. The pump is kind of cheaply made, but it gets the job done and you're probably not going to use it more than a few times, because these balls tend to stay well-inflated. The mat is a typical yoga/pilates mat. It is a thin mat (1/8 of an inch), but I personally prefer my mats this way. Too thick and you can't do exercises properly. It is perfect for ball exercises.
As for the video, it is just a very basic introduction, geared toward the yoga end of things. I recommend also buying an in-depth instructional VHS/DVD that concentrates on the fitness ball topic in which you're most interested (weightloss, flexibility, pilates, yoga, etc).
Regardless of which product you buy, you're definitely making a great choice when buying a fitness ball!』
(A nice starter kit for a yoga/Pilates beginner) 『This is a good kit for getting started with yoga/Pilates. It includes some nice, quality equipment for a good value. The high-quality ball is rugged and easy to pump (the pump is included). The ball is 22 inches/55 cm, which you wouldn't know unless you read the actual box - the perfect size ball if you are between 4'8" and 5'5" or on the "petite" side. You also receive a nice, grippy yoga mat and a so-so instructional video. The video is short and the instructor is easy to follow, and after finishing it you feel like you've got a good grasp of at least a few of the "basics" of yoga/Pilates - terminology as well as actual poses. The video isn't the best quality, though. I would have preferred something longer, and in DVD format, but for the price, I really can't complain.
After I practiced with this set for a while at home, I felt ready to tackle a more advanced yoga/Pilates class at my gym. Overall, a good starter kit.
