Kakaku:Lumivision IPhone 3G used's review (Of historical intererest) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier were already in love during production of this film and it`s because of them this is still of interest. Flora Robson still excell(she was to meet Vivien as her servant Ftattateeta in CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA - by the way my first review on this site on this very day - and a nice switch since Vivien is Robson`s lady-in-waiting here)... The battle was always a bathtub-affair(noted even in 1936). Olivier`s crying of grief was cut in the US because the thought of the time was that is wasn`t manly enough. Note also a cameo by James Mason in an ealy scene. Vivien Leigh is at her best and it`s the only film pre-Scarlett that she gives a star performance. The film does have a good storyline, but halts because we miss the interplay between Leigh and Olivier when their not on screen together....』 (The Best Queen Bess) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This is a period piece set at the time of the Spanish Armada which is little known to Americans. This is a shame since it is a fairly good one. The action does not focus so much on the Armada as it does on the political intrigues leading to it. It also focuses on a love story between English, Lawrence Olivier and the half Spanish Vivian Leigh. When all is said and done, it is their story. The threat of invasion is just the backdrop. Both of these big name Hollywood stars do a wonderful job but neither does as good a job as Flora Robson who plays Elizabeth I. She does not get as much screen time as the others but her portrayal of the English monarch must rank as definitive. It is a role she reprised in the Hollywood epic, THE SEAK HAWK, with Errol Flynn. The movie is not great but it is a highly enjoyable period piece. Enjoy it. 』 (Very good movie!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『My family enjoyed this picture very much. It was well written, and my Sister even recognized the uncredited James Mason in the film. The acting was superb (Flora Robson made a very regal Queen Elizabeth I). Well worth watching!』 (A movie worth watching!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Definitely a wonderful movie, Fire over England, brings to the screen the story of a young English naval officer as he strives to uncover a plot, find the conspirators and warn the Queen of the imminent threat of foreign invasion. The setting is 1558 England. King Philip of Spain has collected enough gold from the colonies in the Americas that he has built the Spanish Armada. In addition he has set up a network of spies and operatives in Queen Elizabeth's court who serve as his eyes and ears in England. The clash between England and Spain is as fascinating as the conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism, and both are presented very well in the film. Needless to say, the Hollywood heavyweights Vivien Leigh and Lawrence Olivier as well as the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! The only setback is that Fire over England is a 1937 film and compared to modern films, or even epics of the time such as Gone with the Wind, falls short of being a masterpiece. Nevertheless, the film combines drama, action, and romance, making it one of the best of its kind. The setting, the dialogues, the music and the costumes are all wonderful! History, Intrigue, Duty, Love, Passion, and Honor, are all about. It is a movie worth watching, especially for those with a soft spot for History! 』 (Still the best screen Elizabeth!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This is one of the best-scripted of all cinematic costume dramas, even if that script does require the young Laurence Olivier to sing (sounding strangely like Noel Coward as he does). Vivien Leigh is perfect as the young lady-in-waiting envied by the ageing Elizabeth, who finally manages to renounce her dreams of lost youth; James Mason makes a fine villain; and above all Flora Robson makes a seriously convincing and complex Elizabeth, politic and inspiring all at once. It makes more recent movies about Elizabeth look sadly shallow and trite.』 『Alexander Korda often enlisted Tinseltown talent to lend his British productions some Hollywood pizzazz. For this spirited historical film about the intrigues and counter-intrigues leading up to the Spanish Armada's assault against Queen Elizabeth's brave little island, William K. Howard directed and the cameraman was the great James Wong Howe. Still, it's the Russian French art director Lazare Meerson who takes top honors with his ethereal sets. The swashbuckling pales besideCaptain BloodorThe Prisoner of Zenda, but the diplomatic crosstalk and young Larry Olivier's James-Bond-in-a-ruff act are delicious. Vivien Leigh is Olivier's love interest (on screen and off), and royalty is royally served by Flora Robson's gusty Good Queen Bess (a role she reprised inThe Sea Hawk) and Raymond Massey's wonderfully lugubrious Philip of Spain. Robert Newton plays another Spaniard, and if you don't blink you'll glimpse James Mason as the traitorous Hillary Vane. --Richard T. I spent hours watching and learning and wanted to pass it on. Now I hope she uses it to make me and my husband lots of new presents!!!! I love the step by step process. It is great having it on DVD because it is easier to flip back and review what was said and done. Now if only I had time to Knit. It is a shame she doesn't explain when you can sneak in time to knit! That is my only complaint...』 (Not good for beginners) ![]() ![]() 『Like most Gen-Xers, I have been sucked into believing that knitting is cool again. So I went to my local library and got a few books on knitting along with this DVD. I was very disappointed with this DVD and glad that I rented it from the library rather than buying it. Laura-Jean seems to be a superb knitter but a horrible teacher. I know NOTHING about knitting. One of her first instructions is to make a slipknot. Since I'm a white collar worker, no longer in the Girl Scouts, and never worked on a pirate ship, I have no idea what a slipknot is. Unfortunately, Laura-Dean did not explain or show what one was either. Her speed is annoyingly fast. I constantly was stopping, rewinding and putting my DVD in slo-mo just to keep up. I did better reading "Teach Yourself Visually Knitting" than watching Laura. I give it 2 stars because it might be good if you are refreshing or have some knitting experience already, plus Laura Jean seems like a nice enough person and I would hate to just poo poo a nice person and all. If you have no idea how to knit and are truly a beginner, don't get this. Beginners will simply leave feeling frustrated and discouraged.』 (good instruction.) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This is an excellent instructional video for knitting. Laura-Jean's technique is a little unusual, and beginning knitters may want to consider picking up the absolute basics elsewhere, but this DVD goes beyond where other DVDs leave off, such as reading a pattern, increasing and decreasing, making buttonholes and other things. Sure, Laura Jean is kindof obnoxious, but if you can overlook her personality quirks, you can get a lot out of this DVD. 』 (How to have fun knitting) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I loved the enthusiasm of Laura-Jean as she teaches how to do several beginner's projects. Thanks so much, Laura-Jean, for making knitting so much fun!! I recommend this DVD highly and I am buying some extras to give as Christmas gifts for my friends.』 (It Can't Just Be Me...Can It: Disappointing DVD at Best) ![]() 『I am surprised at all the four-star ratings on this instructional knitting DVD. For almost $25 I am disappointed in it. I am a new knitter, having taught myself the basic stitches at stitchguide.com and elsewhere on the internet. I wanted to learn more and am a bit challenged when it comes to learning strictly by reading, especially when it comes to something spacially related, like making one long piece of yarn into a garment using two needles. I found I had to go to extreme slow stop-motion when watching Laura demonstrating the knit and pearl stitches, almost as if she was a magician performing slight of hand. It should've been very clear, I felt. Also, I still don't know how to knit on circular needles. At no time does Laura bother to tell me in which hand to hold which needle, so that I was stumped until I did again, slooooow stop-motion using my player's remote and to my surprise saw her switch the needles in her hands almost imperceptibly. This is bad when teaching a new knitter...Again, I expected this to be more clear. If I wanted magic, I would've bought something else. I also expected to learn what to do when I drop a stitch, and this valuable piece of information is hidden somewhere in the tape, surely. I'm sure I'll find it eventually. In general, I find my basic questions unanswered. A pleasant personality for sure, but for truly new knitters I cannot recommend this instructional video, and certainly not for the price, new. I learned as much for free online.』 『"Always wanted to learn to knit? It's easier than you think, and this DVD will guide you through step-by-step. Our movie begins one fine day when the Queen approaches the Kings guard with the proposition of his help to ensure the safety of their daughter as she travels with her dowry to wed the Sicilian King. Things go awry when a very dumb group of bandits attack them, and force the group into a broken down house, that just happens to sit in the very middle of a huge field. Now the fact that the placing of this house is very convenient, for the band of desperate, dirty ruffians led by Ron Perlman must rush into the open glade to attack. If this wasn't bad enough, we find that the good guys have a certain adventage, possessing a feat known as the "Tigers Claw" Which is supposed to be a deadly weapon. What it really is is sending three people rushing wildly out into the field and slaying as many people as possible. They only manage to achieve this successfully for the 'bad guys' happen to be insanely stupid. The sword play is also the worst I've ever seen. Stances are sloppy, there's virtually no talent displayed, and the fighting reminds me of the battles I used to fight against my brothers. Really bad and totally lacking in realistic proffesionalism. Oh, back to the story. Well, the 'bad guys' die without managing to kill even one of the opposing party. If this wasn't enough to make us convinced this was definatly a scripted movie, the way the guard and princess fall in love is even dumber. A few yells, proffesions of hate, and five minutes later they are in love. I shake my head in unseen disgust. Also don't be fooled, some have said this is a movie that gamers will love, they are wrong. We gamers are not so totally dumb that a movie such as this will have us jumping for joy. Arrgh......There still has to be a level of intelligence there for us to enjoy it. On the whole, this is a movie that has bad acting, bad camera work and equally bad music. Besides which the costumes where a few centuries short of being truly Renaissance. From hooped skirts, to the men's almost 1700th century styles, this definatly cannot be considered influenced by the century they where trying to portray. In conclusion, don't rent, and most definatly don't buy. See if some unlucky friend of your's happens to have it first.』 (For the ten year old Muskeeter.) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Treachery, villainy, swordplay, noble secret love and a princess in peril: what more could the average ten year old would-be Musketeer ask for? Set in the days of chivalry at sword point, "The King's Guard" is the tale of the "last stand" of a princess (Ashley Jones) being taken to a marriage that will save her father's throne and the young noble Guard (Trevor St. John) who secretly loves her, against the traitorous ex-Guard (Eric Roberts) who wants her and the greedy Lord (Ron Perlman) who wants her dowry. This movie has nice costumes and I think that's where most of the money went. Ninety-nine percent of it takes place in one setting. There are no horses although the DVD cover shows a cavalry. The acting runs the spectrum from almost-painful-to-watch (Jones) to oh-good-someone-knows-what-they're-doing (Perlman, Roberts). The swordplay, although decently choreographed, is done too hesitantly by most of the actors to be truly exciting. People who are into the Renaissance Fair, SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) and LARP (Live Action Role Playing) scenes may be able to glean some inspiration from the costumes and sword play. Although there is much fighting there is no blood or gore so this would be an excellent family movie for anyone with young children going through a swashbuckling phase. There are some funny bloopers after the end credits. Worth a rent for gamers, worth a rent/buy used for youngsters.』 (TRUTH, HONOR, COURAGE AND CHIVALRY) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This fine Medieval tale of a proud king will fill your heart with a longing for the noble days of knights and castles.』 『 The King's Guard 』 『 Hitman's Run 』 『 Best of the Best 』 『 Stiletto Dance 』 『 Intoxicating 』 another good item omega fetish『 The Night Evelyn Came Out of The Grave Uncut DVD + The Red Queen Kills Seven Times Uncut DVD English Audio Limited Edition (7000 Units) 』

Kakaku:Sundance Channel Home Entertainment IPhone 3G used's review (Loads of campy fun) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『A witty homage to women's films of yesteryear, all tied up with a big gender-bending bow.』 (Good satire) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Why is it that the most banal and straightforward films get lauded by the Motion Picture Academy, while films that push boundaries and take risks, especially if comedies, get ignored? And why is it that there is no separate category for comedies and musicals for the Oscars? In watching the DVD of the 2003 Sundance channel film Die Mommie Die! I could not help but have these thoughts. It's a truly brilliant film, with an Oscar caliber performance by Charles Busch, playing a Joan Crawford/Susan Hayward/Gloria Swanson/Bette Davis/Doris day-like hybrid character in a spoof of the Grand Dame Guignol classic films of the 1960s that inspired such 1980s television soap operas as Dynasty and Dallas. What makes it so brilliant, aside from the dominant performance by Busch, is that it works both as camp, in the vein of the films it parodies, and also as a lampoon or satire of camp. Achieving excellence in one of these veins is difficult enough, but to go two for two in the same film is damned near miraculous. And given that the Grand Dame Guignol genre is so campy to begin with, it's even harder to achieve than in parodying other stock forms, such as science fiction, in the recent The Lost Skeleton Of Cadavra, itself a terrific spoof of 1950s sci fi, but far easier to pull off than this film's aims were. The moments that are the most memorable, and which make this film soar, are the not quite sure if one should laugh moments, because there is a sense that there is genuine emotion being felt by the ridiculous characters within. This is brilliance, and it all goes back to a terrific screenplay written by Busch, a renowned drag queen, who adapted the screenplay from a late 1990s one man show. Busch, in a red wig, also looks remarkably like Eve Arden, and although it's been years since I saw 1960s sitcom The Mothers-In-Law, which starred Arden and Kaye Ballard, I'm sure that Busch loaded a few sly references to the actress upon whom both the name and look of his character is derived. The basic premise of the film is that Busch is washed up actress/singer Angela Arden, in a loveless marriage, who takes on many lovers. Her twin sister Barbara died years earlier, her movie producer husband, Sol Sussman (Philip Baker Hall), is failing in health and business and manipulates their maid Bootsy (Frances Conroy), who is in love with him, her daughter Edith (Natasha Lyonne) is a bitch who hates her, and her son Lance (Stark Sands) is a mentally unbalanced homosexual. Add in Lothario tennis pro Tony Parker (Jason Priestley), who also wickedly savages his own tv soap opera persona, and the makings of a fun film abound. He also seems to be channeling a poor man's Peter Lawford in his brim hat, tennis shorts and penny loafers. There are numerous greatly funny sex scenes.... This is a film that never, in a billion years, would get nominated for an Oscar, the way Brokeback Mountain has, but it represents everything artistically that Brokeback Mountain is bankrupt of- originality, daring, humor, humility, and terrific writing. The same sad fact of neglect also unfortunately applies to Busch's great performance. There will come a time, though, when injustices like this even out, and when film lovers who are speaking of this film draw a blank when Brokeback Mountain is mentioned. Let's hope that we're all alive and kicking when that day comes. 』 (Die Mommie Die, DVD) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This is one of the campiest movies I've seen since Mommie Dearest. Great to see at a dinner party.』 (A Drag Queen Extravaganza!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Charles Busch, who wrote the script for this film as well as plays the lead, has produced an odd soap opera with appeal to gay audiences. I had never heard of Charles Busch but he obviously is the penultimate drag queen in his outlandish flowing gowns, wigs, and dalmation pantsuits. The story is actually based on Greek tragedy but in the hands of Charles Busch, it becomes a camp classic. The story is based on the Greek myth of the twin sisters, Helen of Troy and Clytaemnestra. Clyteamenestra is married to Agamemnon. Agamemnon has sacrificed his oldest daughter in an effort to change the course of the Trojan War, which he wins. However his wife Clyteamenestra has taken a lover, Aegisthus. He has another daughter, Electra, and a son, Orestes. In the hands of Charles Busch, these Greek mythology characters come to life in a sordid tale of Hollywood murder, incest, and all kinds of other sexual oddities. Jason Priestly plays the bisexual gigolo lover who seduces both the son and the daughter in the story. One well acted character is the maid, played by Francis Conroy, the mother from "Six Feet Under". Natasha Lyonne plays the role of Electra seeking revenge on her mother. Phillip Baker Hall plays the role of Agamemnon, the Hollywood producer. Charles Busch, playing actress/singer/dancer Angela Arden, is on camera about 90% of the time and carries the film with his costumes and hairstyles. The clothes he wears are outlandish but entertaining. After I saw the DVD with a group of guys, it was interesting how they described all the outfits you will see in this film. Some parts of the film move more smoothly than others but overall it is entertaining and a bit over the top.』 『"You slipped into my life as easily as vermouth into a glass of gin," purrs reclusive singing star Angela Arden, as played by camp icon Charles Busch (Psycho Beach Party). Arden is not only haunted by a secret, she's treated like dirt by her louse of a husband (Phillip Baker Hall,Boogie Nights), her snoopy maid (Frances Conroy,Six Feet Under), and her petulant daughter (Natasha Lyonne,Slums of Beverly Hills). Only her mentally defective son (Stark Sands) and a well-endowed gigolo (Jason Priestley,Beverly Hills 90210) treat her with love and affection. Is it any wonder she takes drastic action to improve her life? Replete with lurid sex, incestuous overtones, a poisoned suppository, musical numbers, an acid freakout, and black-and-white flashbacks,Die Mommie Die!lovingly sends up movie soap operas.
