(WWII through the eyes of a modern progressive)
『This was not what I had expected. The content is concentrated on social issues rather than events of the war or strategies. While the footage and letters used are obviously valid and interesting glimpses of the times, it appears that the selection of material and editing was done with respect to a modern progressive mindset.

There were a lot of gruesome deaths in the war and many minorities were treated unfairly. If these are the aspects of the war that you wish to learn about, then this is the documentary for you. Otherwise, you *will* find some interesting information with regard to the war itself, but you will have to endure the former to get to it.』

(One of the best overviews)
『I usually don't respond to reviews (negative or positive) but some of the perspectives offered on THE PERILIOUS FIGHT really trouble me. I teach Advanced Placement U.S. History at a Southern California high school and I can tell you that I see virtually NO inaccuracies in this program. Some may indicate it's anti-American (and I'm not sure what that means)or that it glosses over certain elements of WWII. The film isn't revisionist, and "anti-war" activist Martin Sheen does a fine job of narration (if you're not anti ANY-war, something's wrong). Of course, these are only my viewpoints but if someone says a documentary or book is historically inaccurate, please make sure you can cite facts. I think many of these reviewers are like a fellow I once met who said he would be a great history teacher because he loves to watch the History Channel and is "really into" WWII. THE PERILOUS FIGHT is somewhat of a rarity--a literate interpretation of the war, much like two of the better books on the conflict: WARTIME (Paul Fussell) and CHOICES UNDER FIRE (Michael Bess). I encourage viewing of this program as it's compelling, multi-dimensional and non-biased.』

(Captivateing)
『I didn't see this movie being anit-war or anti wwII at all. It wasn't until I saw other reviews that I even considered it. But really, its not. It talks about other things that were going on during the war, like civil rights and the wars effect on the American people. And It shows what America did before we entered the war. How Rosavelt ammeded laws so he could send arms to Britian and France. If you want to learn about death camps and hear extensive battle tatics then buy another movie. WWII was one of the most popular wars in our History, and I would say little if any of us Americans now do not believe that Hitler had to be stopped, the death camps had to be stopped. But that doesn't mean that war is pretty,or something to be seen through the rose collored glasses of glory. It costly and gruesom. It shows the triumph and defeat of both the American military and the American people. Our Patriotism and Our Internment Camps. Their worry and their pain. I think this was a beautiful movie. It covers things that most movies don't bother mentioning.』

(Somewhat revisionist; but entirely moving)
『Reading the other reviews on this piece, I was startled to see people criticizing each other so harshly. I should think everyone would be aware by now that just about all history is currently taught or presented through the "politically correct" lens of our culture (for example, the holiday is called Thanksgiving not because the deeply religious Pilgrims were thanking the Native Americans only, but because they were grateful to God first and foremost--but since that bit of important information brings God into the classroom, it is often eliminated or changed).

So yes, there were points of emphasis in this series that seemed a bit forced in their inclusion, but for all that, it was, over all, deeply moving, and, as far as I could tell, mostly accurate. Part of the negative reaction may be because of Mr. Sheen's being the narrator; he does a wonderful job, but if it had been, say, Charlton Heston, the reviews might have been slightly less negative.

All of which goes to say that, the less viewers know about an actor or actress' political views, the more likely they are to enjoy the presentation; and an alert and creative teacher in a more conservative private school could still use this series for teaching not only about WW II, but also how the current academia interprets it. After all, how history is viewed is part of history itself.』

(Different Perspective, Hardly Anti-American)
『Toss the tiresome cry from the right in the previous review aside. This video is about World War II through an American lens. It provides an interesting, FACTUAL, balanced perspective of World War II as it was viewed by Americans on the home front at the time, largely through letters and film of life at home and for soldiers in the field. Contrary to popular belief, not all Americans were supportive of the war throughout the entirety of their country's involvement in it. People got tired of losing their sons, husbands, and fathers, as well as the many sacrifices they had to make to support the war effort. That fatigue is reflected here, as well as Americans' biting the bullet about these things because they knew this was a war that had to be won. This is not a 'this happened in this battle and that happened at that battle' kind of set. If you want that kind of a a comprehensive DVD set about WWII, you are better off with the excellent but pricey "World at War" set. If you want a lot of jingoism and unquestioning flag-waving, this is not the set for you, either. This DVD is highly recommended.』

(Marvelous dancing)
『These six wonderful works offer us a deeper experience of the work of Hans van Manen in addition to Concertante on another dvd. Music by Britten, Part, Bach, Scarlatti and even listenable Cage provide the inspiration for the movements. The dancers are amazing and the choreography top drawer world class fantastic. Two discs of terrific works. Solo, for 3 male dancers done to Bach's Partita for solo violin is my favorite, truly dazzling, athletic, and so right with the music. Deja Vu for male and female sparkles. There's more. Try it.』

(Fantastic!)
『My daughter loves this movie! She is 2 years old and fascinated with elephants.』

(Disney's Dumbo)
『My grandkids love to watch this movie (and I love to watch it with them).
It has great animation, and funny as well as tender scenes. When the mother elephant sings "Baby Mine, Don't You Cry" I always water up. A great song from a great movie.』

(Brings Me to Tears Every Time)
『Jumbo? Don't you mean Dumbo!

And so the tearfest begins.

I loved this movie as a child and recently rediscovered it while visiting with my two year-old niece. As is typical for kids that age, we watched the movie everyday (sometimes twice) for a week.

Every time I cried.

I can't really think of another Disney movie that depicts such a wonderfully loving and sweet relationship between parent and child (no Bambi didn't do it for me).

Plus Dumbo is the self-doubting underdog throughout, which simply makes me love him even more.

Oh, and my niece, she squealed with delight for Dumbo's triumphs each time and paid serious attention to the sad parts where mother and child are separated. Never underestimate a two year-old.

The only reason I stop short of giving it a 5-star is the dated depictions of excessive alcohol use, smoking and the stereotyping of the crows...yeah I know you can't stereotype crows as such, but we can easily figure out to whom those stereotypes apply. Can't go back in time and undo the social circumstances that made this acceptable childrens entertainment.

Overall, though the touching story of an outcast only a mother could love and his triumph over his tormentors is timeless.』

(Best Disney movie for toddlers)
『I have various Disney movies and this is the best one for toddlers as it does not contain the thematic and real violence of a Peter Pan, nor sibling bickering like in Cinderella nor a too-hip attitude. Instead it is innocent and very positive in its message of overcoming your weaknesses and of self-esteem. (In fact I read an article that a company in India uses this movies to motivate its employees.) Aside from this, this movie is a masterpiece for people of all ages. The next best ones for toddlers are maybe Cinderella and The Jungle Book and when they are a little older Little Mermaid and Alice in Wonderland. For Aladdin and Lion King I'll maybe wait until my little one is maybe 5.』

(My new review today)
『More Dumbo carttoon movie from Disney !
Elizabeth L.』

『With high-flying entertainment and messages about friendship, acceptance, courage, and believing in yourself, Walt Disney's DUMBO is "a timeless classic for children of all ages. Walt Disney at his finest" (Us Weekly). Meet Dumbo, Mrs. Jumbo's sweet little "Baby Mine" who charms all who see him . . . until it's discovered that he has huge floppy ears! With the support of his very best friend, Timothy the mouse, Dumbo soon learns that his spectacular ears make him unique and special, allowing him to soar to fame as the world's only flying elephant. You'll love all the daring adventure, colorful characters, award-winning music, and a circus tent full of fun bonus features! Go behind the scenes with DisneyPedia's "My First Circus," an all-new activity where you can learn about your favorite circus animals. This Big Top Edition also features Sing-Along Songs, a DVD Storybook, a new digital transfer, and much more.』
『A Disney "classic" that actually is a classic,Dumboshould be part of your video collection whether or not you have children. The storytelling was never as lean as inDumbo, the songs rarely as haunting (or just plain weird), the characters rarely so well defined. The film pits the "cold, cruel, heartless" world that can't accept abnormality against a plucky, and mute, hero. Jumbo Jr. (Dumbo is a mean-spirited nickname) is ostracized from the circus pack shortly after his delivery by the stork because of his big ears. His mother sticks up for him and is shackled. He's jeered by children (an insightful scene has one boy poking fun at Dumbo's ears, even though the youngster's ears are also ungainly), used by the circus folk, and demoted to appearing with the clowns. Only the decent Timothy Q. Mouse looks out for the little guy. Concerns about the un-PC "Jim Crow" crows, who mock Dumbo with the wonderful "When I See an Elephant Fly," should be moderated by remembering that the crows are the only social group in the film who act kindly to the little outcast. If you don't mist up during the "Baby Mine" scene, you may be legally pronounced dead.--Keith Simanton

(Abysmally poor sound production)
『What might have been interesting lectures and power-point presentations are absolutely sabotaged by having the camera/sound recorder at the back of a lecture hall caputuring the ambient sound of amplified voices. For whatever reason, the microphones were not tied into the recording, so what you get is a dismally low grade recording of amplified voices as they are dispersed throughout the hall. Then, to compound that problem, an insipid "new age" vocal soundtrack has been laid over the lectures rendering them essentially inaudible. I wholeheartedly agree with every reviewer who lambasted this DVD for it's amateurish, defective and inexcusably crummy production values.』

(Sound quality)
『The sound quality was poor. Music was added throughout the program. The music was pleasant but made it very difficult to hear the speeches. I wish I could have made out enough to know if the subjects were well covered.』

(Very poor quality production.)
『Horrendous sound quality with annoying background music makes this DVD almost unintelligible. Amatuerish, low quality production of probably interesting speakers, echoing blandly in a large room. I only hope I can get a refund for this money-waster.』

(Poor DVD quality)
『I would not even give this a rating of 1 star for I could not even watch the DVD that was sent to me it was of such poor quality.....I am disgusted with the amount of money that I have wasted on such an item...And would not recommend it to anyone.』

(Questions and Answers with the best of them)

『After the tight plotting and quirky intensity ofFargo, this casually amusing follow-up from the prolifically inventive Coen (Ethan and Joel) brothers seems like a bit of a lark, and the result was a box-office disappointment. The good news is,The Big Lebowskiis every bit a Coen movie, and its lazy plot is part of its laidback charm. After all, how many movies can claim as their hero a pot-bellied, pot-smoking loser named Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) who spends most of his time bowling and getting stoned? And where else could you find a hairnetted Latino bowler named Jesus (John Turturro) who sports dazzling purple footgear, or an erotic artist (Julianne Moore) whose creativity consists of covering her naked body in paint, flying through the air in a leather harness, and splatting herself against a giant canvas? Who else but the Coens would think of showing you a camera view from inside the holes of a bowling ball, or an elaborate Busby Berkely-styled musical dream sequence involving a Viking goddess and giant bowling pins? The plot--which finds Lebowski involved in a kidnapping scheme after he's mistaken for a rich guy with the same name--is almost beside the point. What counts here is a steady cascade of hilarious dialogue, great work from Coen regulars John Goodman and Steve Buscemi, and the kind of cinematic ingenuity that puts the Coens in a class all their own. (Rescue Dawn)
『Very good movie. Quite a story and Christain Bale is such a great actor to play this part in it.』

(Surprisingly decent)
『You probably won't remember this movie the week after next, but as you watch it, it's fine entertainment, based, as noted, on a true POW story. The actors are uniformly good, and the script, even if you've seen things like it before - "The Deer Hunter" - is intelligent. The suspense works well, and the jungle scenery is fascinating. I expected a loud shoot-em-up based on the dvd cover, and was pleasantly surprised to encounter more of a psychological survival tale. It was filmed from ending to beginning, so the actors could start out emaciated, and gradually regain weight. Watch it.』

(Visually arresting, but a forgettable film.)
『This movie was specifically requested by my brother as the film upon which we would build our Blu-Ray collection. We watched it the first night we had gotten our Playstation 3 and HDMI cable. That was also the last time we watched it.

Visually, we couldn't have picked a better movie to inaugurate ourselves into the world of Hi-Def films. Herzog's cinematography is exceptional. The colors and details are so arresting and intense that, honestly, it is almost overwhelming for a moment. Unfortunately, the sightseeing doesn't get to last very long, as once Christian Bale's Deiter Dengler gets captured, the tone shifts visually to the muddy prison camp for much of the rest of the film.

I wish I had more to say about this movie, but unfortunately there's not much more to say: Christian Bale's performance is engaging, but on par with what we'd expect from him. The real star performance comes from Steve Zahn, who finally reveals that he can act. He performs well beyond what one would expect from the guy that starred opposite Jack Black in Saving Silverman, and if I had to pick one real reason for seeing this movie, it would be his performace. Ultimately, though, the plot drags through most of the second act, and while it's not a bad film by any stretch of the term, it's just not a movie I've had a strong desire to watch again.

I would say that fans of Christian Bale should get this movie, but if you are a big Bale fan, you probably already have it.』

(Not that good)
『My wife and I watched this movie but it wasn't that good at all. The seller sent it to us very fast, but after watching the movie I wouldn't watch it again.』

(Harrowing tale of survival)
『Flying a bombing mission over Laos in 1965, Dieter Dengler (Christian Bale) is shot down, tortured, and imprisoned in a POW camp. Refusing to give up hope, he leads the other, dispirited captives (Steve Zahn, Jeremy Davies, Abhijati "Meuk" Jusakul, and Lek Chaiyan Chunsuttiwat) in an escape attempt.

This film is quite good at presenting not only the physical privations of torture and starvation but also the mental toll exacted by the fear, boredom, and hopelessness of incarceration. Set against this backdrop, Dieter's refusal to give up becomes a powerful testament to the resiliency of the human spirit. Director / screenwriter Werner Herzog is famous for shooting his films in difficult locations; in this case, the gorgeous Thai countryside provides a stunning setting and steeps the film in authenticity. This may be Herzog's most conventional film, but it is well worth watching.

『Real-life story of a US fighter pilot Dengler, shot down and captured during the Vietnam War. Christian Bale as Dengler, plans a death-defying escape.』
『In the tradition ofThe Great EscapeandThe Deer Hunter,Rescue Dawnis Werner Herzog's take on the pulse-pounding POW genre. Unlike most such efforts, however, his isn't just based on a true story, it's a remake of his 1997 documentaryLittle Dieter Needs to Fly. German-born Dieter Dengler (Christian Bale, who first made his mark in Steven Spielberg’s prison camp dramaEmpire of the Sun) has longed to pilot a plane since he was a boy. When he joins the Navy during the Vietnam War, he gets his wish. Then he's shot down over Laos. Though he survives, Dengler is captured by the Pathet Lao. Through his internment, he meets Duane Martin (Steve Zahn in his finest performance), with whom he becomes fast friends. While Dengler is arrogant and resourceful, Martin is patient and humble. With Dengler's assistance, the prisoners escape, but the untamed wilderness turns out to be just as dangerous (cinematographer Peter Zeitlinger ably captures its cruel beauty). Those who've seenLittle Dieterknow how this tale ends. Suffice to say, Herzog's reenactment makes for rousing entertainment. If the film has a flaw, it's that the rah-rah finale plays like something from out of a mainstream sports movie. That quibble aside, the actors, including Jeremy Davies as a delusional campmate and Toby Huss as a fellow flyer, are aces. And Herzog, who's been concentrating on nonfiction, likeGrizzly Man, proves he can direct a Hollywood-style action epic with the best of 'em. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

『Mayhem rules inDeath Race, a head-over-heels remake of the Roger Corman cult classicDeath Race 2000, in which cars become lethal weapons. The strength of this new version is its total single-mindedness about vehicular homicide; it has the virtue of no cluttering subplots or simpering sentimentality. And banish all memory of the original's wild satirical comedy:Death Raceis as grim as a dinner tray to the face (a reference that will be explained in a key sequence). In a slightly futuristic maximum-security prison, cons take part in brutal races around the island prison, their violent deaths watched live by millions of viewers. Jason Statham, possibly cast because of his driving dexterity in theTransportermovies, plays a man wrongly imprisoned for murder. Joan Allen provides her brittle cool as the warden, who recruits Statham to assume the masked persona of a legendary driver called Frankenstein. Tyrese Gibson is Frankie's main rival, Natalie Martinez provides the fetching eye candy, but the acting honors go to Ian McShane, as the philosophical prison mechanic. One misses the cross-country race from the original film, as the setting here is claustrophobic and the cars are largely colorless and indistinguishable from each other. Director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil) continues to display the sensibility of a video-game addict, which will either be a recommendation or a turn-off, depending on your own tastes. At least it doesn't have the hypocritical moral blathering of something like the somewhat similarCondemned--who knew you could be so grateful for simple, straight-forward head-bashing?--Robert Horton
