(Here's what it is, here's what it ain't)
『Slap Shot is bottom-of-the-barrel minor league hockey. It's blue collar, living on the edge of desperation, rust belt culture. It's about a marginal business run for purposes irrelevant to sport. It's people miscast in life from hacks who see themselves as pros, to elitists who deign to play with the low-lifes. It's about people screwing up their relationships, about mis-communication and non-communication. It's about how people hurt each other in order to connect with one another. It's crude and irreverent. It's about the really screwy things people finally rally around. It combines more comedy genres than I can count.

Slap Shot is not a typical heartwarming sports flick. It concludes nothing about good and evil. Or overcoming long odds. It's not about a noble coach or noble players. Or illuminating all the wonderful things inside us. It's not for children. It has little to do with pro hockey.

Slap Shot is often described as one of the greatest sports movies ever filmed, but understand what that really means. This is a dark comedy about the human condition put into a sports setting. Low-end minor league hockey, which is a low-paying dead end for most players, is a perfect setting for the movie's themes, especially when set in a dying backwater city. The characters are losers who cling to their illusions, and circumstances and a mismatch between their ideals and personal illusions has led them straight to the bottom. The finale of the movie is first about one final heroic go at ideals - Old Time Hockey! (and even here there's a manipulative twist) - then decends into absurdity ... and the mood lifts and people finally connect as reality sets in. It's a wonderful, unconventional use of sports in film.

Paul Newman is superbly cast in this film. A lesser actor couldn't possibly have pulled off the complexity in this role. He is simultaneously an idealist, a pragmatist, an aging star holding off the inevitable, a womanizer still in love with his ex, conniving, and personally engaging. His manages all that and more in a completely convincing manner.

The film is a classic. Newman said it was one of his favorite roles. Roger Ebert lists it as one of the greatest American comedies.

Priceless.』

(To hockey what "Bull Durham" is to baseball)
『Just one of those 'classic' sports movies. Aside from the 70s nostalgia, it's the fact that if you've ever worked or played in the minor leagues this movie will ring absolutely true. I finally burned out my old VHS version that I played every October when the NHL starts up. The names, the references, the laughs; even if you don't like hockey, "Slap Shot" can be appreciated for what it is - a look back at the bottom rung of a bygone era in sports.』

(Damn Funny)
『This is a very funny movie. When I watched it the first time, I was just thinking "this is not how sports should be played, where is the sportsmanship." But then I watched it again a few days later, and I realized that it is more about how messed up things were in a town like this and in the '70's, and it suddenly made sense that they desperately wanted to keep their jobs, so they did whatever it took. There are a lot of classic lines in this movie, and it kept me laughing the whole time. How can anyone forget the Hanson brothers after watching this movie? Paul Newman does great as well, very tough, very funny. Good movie.』

(ugh!)
『Paul Newman was hopelessly miscast in this pic.It was unnerving to hear the filth that came from his mouth. He is too great for that.Hard to believe this is the same man who excelled as Fast Eddie Felson or Cool Hand Luke.』

(Slapshot)
『Does this really require a review. A NEwman classic and throw in the Hanson Brothers and you have a great film!』
『A failing ice hockey team finds success using constant fighting and violence during games. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 02/14/2006 Starring: Paul Newman Allan Nicholls Run time: 123 minutes Rating: R Director: George Roy Hill』
『Paul Newman and hisButch Cassidydirector, George Roy Hill, made a very original comedy in this 1977 story of an over-the-hill player/coach (Newman) for a lousy hockey team who gets results when he teaches his players to get dirty. One of the most hilariously profane movies ever to come out of Hollywood, this is the kind of film that makes its own rules as it goes along. Newman is very good, and while Hill goes for the gusto in terms of capturing the violence of this world, his instinct for comedy has never been sharper. Great support from Strother Martin, Paul Dooley, and the rest.--Tom Keogh

『Franco Elica is a dissolute movie director who slides into despair after being asked - to his horror - to make a film. Hoping to avoid a looming sexual-harassment scandal, Franco flees to Sicily where he hides out and meets a host of colorful characters: a man who makes his living shooting wedding films, a film director who is faking his own death to finally achieve fame, and a cultured Prince.

The menacing Prince, a huge fan of Franco's movies, commissions him to shoot the wedding of his tempestuous daughter, Bona, with whom Elica quickly falls impulsively, dangerously in love and whose wedding he becomes driven to sabotage at all costs.

Beneath the film's farcical surface is a scathing vision of a cinema in decline: As the cinema goes, so goes the nation -The Wedding Directoris an implicit indictment of a moribund country and a wake-up call for revitalization, peering into the looking-glass to produce a self-reflexive satire of the world of filmmaking.

(Not bad but it could have been better)
『"Dear Boys" was what I expected from the reviews I read prior to purchase but I was disappointed that overall the story line wasn't very cohesive. I was hoping for a film that had the substance of "For Lost Soldier" rather than one that was only a step above soft core.』

(Video Quality Very Poor)
『Not at all what I expected. Subtitles made no sense to the images viewed and just generally NOT a good purchase. Very pleased with the method and timeliness of the delivery, though.』

(Dear Boys)
『I was most disappointed with the quality of this DVD - it seems nothing more than a poor copy from an even poorer Video which is such a shame as I had eagerly awaited the transfer to DVD. The film is excellent but spoied by the poor quality of the DVD』

(Growing Up Dutch and Gay)
『"Dear Boys"

Growing Up Dutch and Gay

Amos Lassen

Finally available on DVD is one of the first gay themed movies that I saw many years ago. "Dear Boys" is a Dutch film made in 1980. It deals with two young boys; it is a very liberal look at handsome young men who discover their sexuality in the mind of a middle aged writer. Wolf is a successful author but he is plagued with self doubt as well as writer's block. He is afraid that as he ages, he will no longer be able to attract the kind of young men he is attracted to. In actuality the movie is about how to deal with the world when being a homosexual was considered to be an abnormality.
Wolf (Hugo Metsers) becomes more and more demanding about the young men he desires but they are more attracted to each other than to him. The movie reverts to a series of fantasies that deal with some of the problems that we were dealing with in the 80's. Director Paul de Lussanet looks at religious guilt, sado/masochism, guilt and romantic love and then gives us a look at the issues in unrepentant and nonsentimental ways. It is an interesting film but dated and must be looked at as a witness to the way that things were. A sometimes funny and other times extremely serious movie, it was once considered to be extremely erotic and candid. It seems mild by the standards of today.

(Dear Boys (Lieve Jongens) (Dutch, Subtitled in English) - DVD (1980))
『Outrageously graphic even by liberal Dutch standards, this homoerotic tale explores the relationships of an aging writer and his young male lovers. Extensive nudity and mature sexual situations.

『Starring Hugo Metsers, Hans Dagelet and Bill van Dijk. Hugo Metsers stars as Wolfbroer, an aging gay writer who becomes more demanding of the young men he has affairs with. They, in turn, are drawn to one another. What follows is a sequence of erotic a』

(Dr Pincus is just delectable!)
『A Brit in New York dies on the operating table. After being resuscitated, discharged and leaving the hospital, he finds he can see and communicate not only with the living, but also with the dead. As soon as the dead discover his secret they just won't leave him alone...
I have always found Ricky Gervais (The Office, Extras) incredibly Englishly funny. In Ghost Town he did not disappoint. He was hilarious from the first to the last minute, what facial expressions! But what got to me, was how sexy his character, Dr Pincus, became as he developed as a character throughout the film. By the end of the film I was positively infatuated with Dr Pincus! The setting (New York) added to the sense of Englishnes mentioned. Excellent.
The film is not just a thigh-slapper though, particularly the middle of the film is quite touching. It makes a pleasant 'Christmas story' (although not set during Christmas, it smacks of being somewhat Dickensian in its theme), has that feel-good factor, and could even pass for romantic comedy.
Lots of quotable one-liners.』

(Spoofing Good Movies...)
『Why is it nowadays producers find the need to spoof good movies? That's all this film does in an attempt to be funny. I was already taken back in the beginning when they started off by making fun of Pulp Fiction, one of the greatest movies ever. I'm all for making fun of Bring It On and such but leave the great films alone.
What I don't understand is in order to even understand most of the films they mock, the viewer would have to be in their mid-twenties yet the humor is that of a middle-schooler. Either society is dumbing down with age or the younger are getting old way too fast. The only reason it gets two stars is in hope that whoever watches this will go out and rent the films this "movie" trashed on.』

(Delightfully intelligent, stupid movie.)
『The most surprising thing about My Big Fat Independent Movie is that no one had made it sooner. Crammed full of every cliché it can lay it's hands on, and openly disparaging of every independent movie made from Pulp Fiction to Run Lola Run its crude, disgusting, full of sexual innuendo, stupid dialogue, foul language and is hysterically funny from beginning to end.

Oh sure it's as subtle as a brick wall and as intellectually challenging as professional wrestling, but that's half the fun. Billing itself as the lowbrow comedy for the highbrow crowd, it makes no pretensions to being anything more than a brilliantly stupid movie. High art this isn't and thank goodness for that.

Like a scythe in a cheap horror movie it cuts everything down in size so no ones a head and shoulders above anyone. All your favourites are seen minus their aspirations to art hood. Oh sure some of the jokes are more stupid than funny, but that's to be expected when you're shooting target practice with a grenade launcher. You'll blow everything up, but stuff is bound to be a little messy around the edges.

In case you were wondering, there is a plot to this movie, mainly useful for bringing in the stunning variety of clichés and allusions to other movies that pepper the film, but it does provide a semblance of structure for the fun. Two thugs Sam (Neil Barton) and Harvey (Eric Hoffman) are sent to Las Vegas by their employer to botch a robbery of a suitcase.

On their way, they are supposed to pick up a guy with a guitar case full of weapons. Unfortunately, he has a tragic encounter with a semi-trailer while engaged in conversation with a French girl, Anomalie (Ashley Head) who just wants to make everyone happy. (If their idea of happiness is winding up dead in horrific accidents than she does a bang up job)

Instead, they pick up a guy with a trombone case, with a trombone in it; Johnny Vince (Darren Keefe) He's happy to go along because he's still recovering from breaking up with his girl friend, who he went out with twice five years ago. What with the restraining order and all, it's been difficult to try and get back together with her, and the lure of Las Vegas irresistible to the want to be hep-cat.

What independent movie would be complete without the confused and disillusioned woman who just can't be happy with her lot in life? With that in mind, they kidnap Julianne (Paget Brewster) after some really gratuitous violence in a grocery store. Julianne is so confused that she can't decide if her husband ignored her because he lusted after the male black gardener, or if she was dissatisfied with the life of being waited on hand and foot by a devoted husband.

As they continue along on their trip they stop for lunch at My Big Fat Greek Restaurant (the highest grossing independent restaurant ever), run over a German woman jogging, and meet up with the Lanky Man (Neil Hopkins doing a remarkable impression of Christopher Walken) who has the key to the warehouse where they are supposed to botch the robbery.

He also has the key to their obligatory fantasy scenes, until he gets so disgusted with the clichés involved he throws them all out. One of the sillier aspects, but still nicely done, of the movie is having the characters commenting on the "independent" aspects of what's happening in the scene. Whether it's choosing appropriately ironic music for a torture sequence, or deciding on the best wayto get the audience to relate to your anti-hero psychotic tendencies, they're very concerned about ensuring that they make the grade.

Along with two sub plots; a trio of Hassidic hit men intent on discovering the formulae for the ideal corn beef sandwich, and a guy who can't remember anything except Kenny G. is responsible for his wife's death, our companions finally make it to the warehouse. After the obligatory surreal dance sequence, the final showdown can take place. Suffice to say it's just what you'd expect, but more.

My Big Fat Independent Movie is stupid, inane, pointless and howling funny. It is obviously made by people who are both fans of independent movies and who are aware of how contradictory that term is becoming. To genuinely appreciate this movie, it will help if you've seen the movies they're teasing. I'm sure part of the fun for some people will be trying to identify the thirty or more features referred to in the movie.

Watching Pauly Shore getting his head blown off with what looked like a rocket launcher, and Jason Mewes as a sex starved answering machine are just added bonuses to this delightfully intelligent, stupid movie.』

(A fun spoof that rewards audiences familiar with its source material.)
『Where My Big Fat Independent Movie really excels is by pulling elements from some very serious dramas and showing how comical they are when tweaked outside of their original contexts. Adding extra kick is the spot-on mimicry of the original films' visual styles that Zlotorynski is able to pull off with efficient shorthand that should tickle the knowledgeable film buffs who've seen the originals.

While the bulk of the humor may be accessible to those who have watched the IFC or Sundance channels occasionally, I should stress that if you don't know which movie had four simultaneous pictures running in quadrants onscreen or where the idea that dream sequences can't happen without a midget was lifted, you may be wondering why your nerdy film geek pals are giggling and you aren't. (To be fair, if you hadn't seen Signs, 8 Mile and The Ring you wouldn't have laughed much at Scary Movie 3 either.) If you find yourself scratching your head too often, that just means you've got some good movies to catch up on.

Unless you're a chin-stroking killjoy who takes their cinema too seriously, you should definitely find some big fat laughs in My Big Fat Independent Movie.』

(WOW -- what a load of $*%&^!)
『I so wanted to like this movie and was looking forward to enjoying a good spoof parody film in the genre of SCARY MOVIE or NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE. But this film was not one tenth as funny as these examples. SM and NATM are not great films but they do make me laugh and are better than other similar films like HOTSHOTS, AIRPLANE and POLICE ACADEMY. I was expecting something within the same ball park from BIG FAT INDEPENDENT MOVIE. It's seems in theory that this premise could work. Make fun of all the independent movies of the last 10 to 15 years. But this was crap because of the lame actors and terrible script which inevitably means bad direction as well.』
『A film that touched the hearts of a generation and one of the most important movies of the decade… ...sounds really boring! If you want laughs, MY BIG FAT INDEPENDENT MOVIE takes a comedic hammer to indie film faves like SWINGERS, MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, PULP FICTION, MEMENTO, and loads more! This hilariously smart satire tells the story of Johnny Vince, a swingin’ hepcat who meets hitmenSam and Harvey on a road trip to pull a "botched robbery" in Las Vegas. Along the way they take a deeply unfulfilled not- sogood- girl hostage (Huff's Paget Brewster), encounter the mysterious Mechanic (Clint Howard), get harassed by a foulmouthed answering machine (Jason Mewes)... and did we mention the lesbians? The result, hilarity ensues! SCARY MOVIE spoofed horror, AIRPLANE did it to disaster flicks, NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE mocked uh, teen movies… now it’s time for Independents to get theirs in this hilarious spoof that takes the highbrow world of independent film to an all-new low』

『Well, it isn't completely uncensored. There is still some shielding / blurring of some of the action. And, I was kind of expecting these to be not before seen cases. I think I didn't read the description correctly. :)

All in all, it is entertaining.

(Dissappointed)

(Enjoyable music from start to finish)
『I bought this based on strength of the CD. The band is superb and Rance Allen is consistent throughout the disc. You get to see the effect of his very dance-oriented music ministry on a live audience. Good cameos from Kirk Franklin, and Fred Hammond and his brothers provide ample support, but it is truly the "Rance Allen" experience.

Any downside, is that visually, other than Rance there is not much going on onstage. The band stays in the background (playing incredibly well), but for such a dance-heavy repetoire there is very little coordinated movement on the part of his backup singers - especially his brothers who share the stage with Rance. They sound fine, just not much to watch since they aren't moving together.

That aside, however, I've watched this DVD over and over many times and it was well worth the purchase.』

『I "CAN'T HELP MYSELF", I must say that I truly enjoyed being part of the "LIVE EXPERIENCE" Concert performed by none other than RANCE ALLEN, featuring other Great Gifts to Gospel. This "LIVE EXPERIENCE" has left me feeling overwhelmingly joyful. To hear, see and feel the beauty of God's Grace through song just "MAKE ME WANNA DANCE". This magnificent experience has led me to express wholeheartedly the meaning of the words song by this GREAT ARTIST.

"IF I COULD MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE", I would go "ALL THE WAY" back and just "LOOK AROUND" and "SAY YES". "TO THE OTHER MAN", "I KNOW A MAN WHO" is "GONNA MAKE IT ALRIGHT".

You see, "THERE IS NO NEED OF CRYING", because the Lord is always supplying. If we abide, he will provide, every time a "REASON TO SURVIVE." "I'M A LIVING WITNESS" and truly believe that if we would just "HOLD ON", "SMILE" and "CEASE FIRE" we can stop the hatred and began to heal the "HEARTACHES".

Now the time has come, we have "GOT TO BE READY" and must remain forever steady. Men of every kind, these are the signs, so let's strive to having once again that desired "PEACE OF MIND".

On the strength of our daily prayer: Dear Lord, "THE SWEETEST NAME", "YOU'RE MY EVERYTHING", "MIRACLE WORKER" and "PREACHER MAN". "YOU'RE THE JOY IN MY SOUL", "I BELONG TO YOU", "STAY WITH ME" because "I GIVE MY ALL TO YOU".

Again Lord, "DO YOUR WILL", and "GOD BLESS AMERICA".......

"AND THAT WILL BE GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME".......
