(Silent Wings DVD)
『Overall I'm 100% satisfied with dvd I ordered and the condition, time it took to get here, etc. all was great! I recommend this site and dvd.』

(SILENT WINGS THE AMERICAN GLIDER PILOTS OF WWII)
『FABULOUS ACTUAL ACCOUNT WITH REAL FOOTAGE. TRUE STORIES OF REAL HEROS NEVER BEFORE AWARDED THEIR DUE. ESPECIALLY FLYING ALL THOSE TROOPERS IN UNDER ENEMY LINES IN THE DARK . A VERY GOOD MOVIE AND STORY.』

(Silent Wings DVD Review)
『A month ago a man in my late father's platoon set me the DVD "Silent Wings" the story of American glider pilots during World War II. Since this man, Bill Shorter and my Dad Charles Wilber were glider riders I found this nearly 2-hour documentary very informative and a pleasure to watch. Many Americans don't realize that the gliders were an important and dangerous part of the American airborne forces during that war. Using interviews with both German and American glider pilots along with great insite by reporters Walter Cronkite and Andy Rooney the DVD was excellant. It not only showed American glider action but also German glider assualts. I recommend this documentary for not only WWII buffs but anyone interested in history.』

(Answered a question.)
『When my graduating grandson (heading for college) asked me about "gliders" in wartime for an essay on WWII, my interest in anything that flies answered some of his questions, and to reinforce it, I got him the copy of Silent Wings and that gave him a better documented story; bravery, heroism, victory and tragedy.』

(A Long Past Due Tribute)
『They all volunteered - to serve in a branch of the service that no longer exists. They knew they were to be pilots on a one-way mission. Fly them in and then grab a rifle and join the infantry. That was the lot of a Glider Pilot. The G on their wings surely stood for "Guts"
Watch this exciting tape and you will certainly want to tip your hat to the few living veterans of this extrodinary branch of the Army Air Corp.』

From the early race to build gliders to the D-Day invasion at Normandy and Nazi Germany's final surrender, Silent Wings - The American Glider Pilots of WWII narrated by Hal Holbrook, reveals the critical role gliders played in World War II offensives. Through rare archival footage and photographs, the film places the audience right at the center of the action in the dangerous world of the American glider pilot.

During WWII, 6000 young Americans volunteered to fly large unarmed cargo gliders into battle. For these glider pilots every mission was do-or-die. It was their task to repeatedly risk their lives landing the men and tools of war deep within enemy-held territory, often in complete darkness, using only a stopwatch to navigate.

Thousands of lives were saved and battles won because of their efforts. In fact, one pilot interviewed said - the 'G' in their emblem didn't stand for glider; it stood for 'guts'.』

(UFC 3 : "The American Dream")
『UFC 3 comes to us from Charlotte, North Carolina and features the return of Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock, and the debut of Kimo Leopoldo. Everyone anticipated a return bout of Gracie vs Shamrock in the Final, but alas injuries would not allow this to happen. UFC 3 also returns to the original format of 8 fighters in the 1st round, with the winners progressing onward. Once again, there is an interesting mix of fighters squared off against each other with their respective martial arts disciplines on display.

1st Round Matchups:

1. 6'8" 616 pd Emmanuel Yarbrough (Sumo) vs Keith Hackney (Kempo Kung Fu)

2. Ken Shamrock (Shootfighting) vs Christophe Leininger (Judo)

3. Roland Payne (Muy Thai) vs Harold Howard (Karate)

4. Royce Gracie (Jiu-Jitsu) vs Kimo Leopoldo (Tae Kwon Do)

The 1st round fights lasted a bit longer than some of the fights in the first 2 UFC's. The best fight for me was Gracie vs Kimo. Kimo was very tough, and Gracie's most difficult opponent to date. Also, once again we have a huge Sumo fighter taking on a karate expert, and the outcome is to be expected. As mentioned in other reviews, the Final is disappointing, as several fighters were injured in their fights, and unable to continue.

Overall, this DVD does not have as great of fights as the 1st 2 UFC's, but it still provides plenty of knockouts and submissions for the UFC fan!』

(The UFC that changed my mind about the Gracies...)
『UFC Classics, Vol. 3 is the UFC that changed my mind about the Gracies. Watch and you'll see why.

It was another great addition, filled with testosterone and mismatches. The first bout is scary, a 500 pound man vs. a 200 pound man. 'nuff said.

Kimo vs. Gracie... Kimo became my hero in this DVD. I thought his "religious martyr" gimmick was risky, yet hilarious. Kicking butt for the Lord. Magic!

And it seemed to work, as he pushed Gracie hard, bringing about the most disgraceful ending to a match every. It changed my mind about the Gracies. Watch and you'll see why I was immensely disappointed in someone who I respected (and still respect).

Modern fans might not appreciate it with the evolution of the sport in the modern day. But in its time, it was spectacular.』

(It's all too real.)
『Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson?
Red Sox and White Sox winning the World Series in consecutive years?
Phil Mickelson taking a third major?
The band out on the field?

Kids' stuff. You want bizarre, you want unpredictable, you want oh-my-god-what-the-hell-is-going-on...take a look at UFC 3.

All the elements were in place for a titanic Royce Gracie/Ken Shamrock rematch in the final. Opposite brackets, each with beatable, untested opponents. Both principles rested and in good health. Either they'd face each other, or one would get toppled in an incredible upset, and we've have a brand new rivalry on our hands. It had to happen. Right?

It starts out reasonably enough. Keith Hackney, a scrappy little bulldog from the mean streets of Chicago, takes on the gargantuan but immobile and clumsy Emmanuel Yarborough, with predictable results. Next, Shamrock grapples with veteran judo fighter Cristophe Leninger, who gives a valiant match. Then Canadian trash-talking pummeller Harold Howard trades punches with hometown hero Roland Payne, an action-packed slugfest with a suitably spectacular conclusion.

And then things get weird.

No one could've predicted this. But then, isn't that the beauty of sports? Who would've thought that the script would go off the rails so suddenly. And that Steve Jennum would have to step up to save the day. (Steve who? You'll see...)

UFC was pitched as a completely real contest. In the third tournament, it was almost too much so. That's what makes it a must-see.』

(True "Ultimate Fighting" Before Everyone Did Jiujitsu)
『Modern Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a hybrid sport where fighters train in both striking (usually a combination of techniques from boxing, Muay Thai, and Taekwondo) and grappling (Brazilian Jiujitsu and wrestling). A thick rulebook exists that prohibits such attacks as biting, hair pulling, eye gouging, hitting to the groan, kneeing/elbowing a "downed" opponent, etc... Even clothing is regulated, with padded gloves and mouthpieces required to minimize damage.

That, however, is not how it used to be. In the "old days" of ultimate fighting, martial artists from completely different spheres of combat would come together in no-holds barred battles of complete domination. There were no weight limits, You might see a huge sumo wrestler battle a karate master or a boxer trying to punch out a ninja. You couldn't be disqualified for biting (though you could be fined), hair-pulling was legal, and punching to the groin happened all the time. During this "iron age" of MMA, fighters battled to answer the age-old question of which martial arts style was the most powerful - and "hybrid" martial artists were almost non-existant.

UFC 3 is the epitomy of this age, and one of the best MMA tournaments you will ever watch. MMA legends like Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock are at the top of their games during this event, and matches that would NEVER happen in modern times (such as the legendary sumo vs. kenpo karate fight where the cage is broken during a sumo-slam) are common-place. While the very last match is a bit of a let-down, almost every single one before it is high-intensity combat that will make your jaw drop. If you want to see what true ultimate fighting is all about, this is THE DVD to purchase.

(UFC 3 - The American Dream)
『This DVD of UFC 3 is a historically great one because it marks the first UFC event to be won by someone other than Royce Gracie but also the only 8 man tournament to be won by an alternate. The matches are your classic old school UFC brawls for the most part, with the finesse of Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie throw in there.
The fights are all good, starting with Emmanuel Yarbrough (600 lbs) vs Keith Hackney (200 lbs). This event also debuts Kimo, the first man to expose Royce's weaknesses in the octagon by pounding him so much in his match that after Royce beat him and moved in, Royce could not continue in the tournament. You will also see many entertaining personalities, which the UFC always supplied back then. Aside from Kimo and his manager, Joe Son, we also get Roland Payne who breaks bricks on his shins and Harold Howard, a Canadian Karateka who is not all their in the head.
Buy this UFC event if you are a fan of the old school UFC or just want to compare it to the events of today. They are not the most technical matches but they are still very exciting.』

『UFC Classics take you ringside to the original battles– before there were rules. Masters in the skills of boxing, jiu-jitsu, karate, tae kwon do and more, the original warriors battled it out to the bloody end. Witness legendary Hall of Famers Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock in their epic battle, and experience the full intensity of the most controversial and captivating era in UFC history!』

(Sci-Fi Fantasy For Our Conflicted Age)
『This re-imagining of L. Frank Baum's classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, is not all sweetness and light. But neither is it laden with the grim-jawed cynicism of Frank Maguire's Wicked. And it's hard to classify it as fantasy, not with all the steampunk elements and cross-cultural references that make this Oz more dimensional than the original. It's more of an immersion in a completely different world, designed to upset expectations and put your brain on a psychic tilt-a-whirl.

D.G. (Zooey Deschanel) has been brought forward to the modern Midwest: a technical genius stuck in a rural farming community, she feels her conservative parents and miserable job stifling her. Only her artwork and her elaborate dreams keep her sane. When an army of black-clad stormtroopers suddenly attacks the farm, her parents fling her through the whirlwind, claiming she'll be safe on the other side.

Once there, the world in which she finds herself could charitably be considered analogous to Baum's original. It is full of visual and textual allusions to both the novel and the classic 1939 movie, such as the costume and makeup design of Raoul Trujillo's "Raw," who straddles the line between Burt Lahr's movie character and W.W. Denslow's illustrations. The Yellow Brick Road is reduced to a minor plot point, but the Witch (Kathleen Robertson) is a much more fully dimensional character, with an intricate history that makes her somewhat sympathetic.

The Outer Zone, or O.Z., is a world of moral complexity, where pat answers are few on the ground. D.G.'s companions must earn her loyalty, and vice versa. The Tin Man of the title (Neal McDonough), so called because of his Texas Ranger badge and long-barrel revolver, is a grim-faced man who must overcome his wrath if he wants to rediscover his place in the world. These are not characters who are good or bad because the plot demands it, but because they are fully realized and drive the story under their own forward momentum.

Director Nick Willing creates a sophisticated visual backdrop for the characters to move through. Part rococo technology and part Neuschwanstein majesty, the visual element helps bring home the otherworld quality of this miniseries. There are a small handful of scenes, particularly when the heroes are fleeing the Witch's tower, when it's obvious the actors are playing against a chromakey set with the hope that the visuals will be matted in later, but these are sparse and not terribly distracting.

One element I'm glad for is that D.G. in this version of Oz is fully committed to where she is. She spares herself, and us, the mewling for home that was so off-putting in the book and the classic movie. She lives in the present and works toward noble goals, rather than getting caught up in wanting to go backward. This makes us as an audience want to go forward with her.

This is not the same old Oz. It's a sci-fi fantasy for our more conflicted age, a battle that offers to play itself out and bring us along not because it's supposed to happen, but because its characters and their hope speak to us. Though probably not for kids, "Tin Man" is a fantasy a contemporary audience can believe in.』

("And Something About An Evil Witch" ~ Bringing Permanent Darkness To The O.Z.)
『Prepare yourself for surprising and unexpected twists and turns in an Oz that even Judy Garland wouldn't be able to recognize. This time it's Zooey Deschanel as DG (i.e. Dorothy Gale), the traveler, or "slipper" between worlds who finds herself in a perilous situation that makes the original 1939 film look like a carefree walk in the park. Though this is a made-for-television mini-series the production values are stellar and the cast superior. I don't think Zooey has ever let me down and her courageous companions; Alan Cumming, Neal McDonough and Raoul Truijillo add a lot of energy and personality to keep the audience focused on this somewhat overly lengthy production. Kathleen Robertson was also a big plus as DG's older, allegedly evil sister Azkadellia, adding a much appreciated touch of sexuality to keep the adult, male audience occupied.

What really makes this storyline unique and entertaining is the massive use of creative license to adapt the original plot, landscape and characters into a new imaginative vision while still maintaining a credible link with the original cinematic classic. The first indication one gets that this tale will be different from what they're used to comes just by reading the title chosen for this mini-series. Why would they omit Oz and Dorothy from the title and call it `Tin Man'? To be sure more surprises lay ahead for the intrepid viewer. The second major change is the clever way in which the word Oz is changed from the name of a place to an acronym of a place. It's not Oz anymore, it's the O.Z. meaning the Outer Zone. Yes there are lots of subtle alterations like this to keep the viewing audience on its toes.

I was also pleased by the updated metamorphosis taken place within the ranks of DG's trio of fellow sojourners. The Scarecrow was no more, now replaced by Glitch (Cumming), a lobotomized human with a prominent zipper down the middle of his hairline, an ex-cop named Cain (McDough) nicknamed Tin Man because of the badge he used to carry and Raw (Truijillo), a member of a race of empathic, hairy, lion-like beings who possess the ability to read minds. Even little, loveable Toto has returned, but not in a form you would have ever anticipated. Toto is only the animal form of a shapeshifter known as Tutor when in human form. Be prepared for a lot more changes than just the few mentioned here.

On the negative side I'd have to mention the Evil Witches scheme to bring permanent darkness to the O.Z. wasn't very original. If you've seen `Kull the Conqueror' ('97) or `Hellboy ('07) you've seen it before. The other drawback is the length of the production which is a common concern when it comes to mini-series. About midway through you might find yourself losing interest, however If you make it to Part 3 the storyline accelerates and you'll find yourself infused with a shot of adrenaline with the introduction of several unanticipated plot maneuvers that will carry the now invigorated viewer to the end.』

(Superb Movie)
『This is a wonderful re imagining of the wizard of oz. More accurately a sequel to it in a way as it takes place about 200 years (guessing at the number) after the Wizard of Oz. D.G. goes on her quest through the O.Z. or Outer Zone and collects an group of friends to help her defeat the evil witch. Sound familiar? It is well worth it though and I adore this movie.』

(Great movie... NOT closed-captioned!)
『I love Tin Man but I DO NOT love it on DVD. There's a federal law (known as the ADA) stating that all things on TV must be close-captioned for the hearing impaired/deaf. Imagine to my surprise and anger that this movie does not meet those standards.』

(Where is it?)
『We loved this series on TV and were thrilled to know we could get it; absolutely the height of creativity and depth and a link to something child-like we know, The Wizard of Oz; It's as if you now understand. Our only disappointed is NO CLOSED CAPTION! Our daughter is hearing impaired and doesn't enjoy movies/TV without captioning as she loses so much. There was captioning when it was aired so it was a great disappointment. Can you check into why there is no captioning? In 2008 it should be automatic. We feel like we got cheated.』
『A tent-pole miniseries release from RHI Entertainment and SCI FI Channel, Tin Man is a modern science fiction update of L. Frank Baum’s timeless "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." When a sorceress named Azkadellia scorches the once-beautiful land of OZ into a desolate wasteland, the only hope lies in an "outsider" named DG, a young Midwestern woman, whose troubling dreams have summoned her to the doomed paradise. 『Hollywood's legendary "woman's director," George Cukor (The Women,The Philadelphia Story), transformed Audrey Hepburn into street-urchin-turned-proper-lady Eliza Doolittle in this film version of the Lerner and Loewe musical. Based on George Bernard Shaw's playPygmalion,My Fair Ladystars Rex Harrison as linguist Henry Higgins (Harrison also played the role, opposite Julie Andrews, on stage), who draws Eliza into a social experiment that works almost too well. The letterbox edition of this film on video certainly pays tribute to the pageantry of Cukor's set, but it also underscores a certain visual stiffness that can slow viewer enthusiasm just a tad. But it's really star wattage that keeps this film exciting, that and such great songs as "On the Street Where You Live" and "I Could Have Danced All Night." Actor Jeremy Brett, who gained a huge following later in life portraying Sherlock Holmes, is quite electric as Eliza's determined suitor.--Tom Keogh

『OK - maybe I haven't watched this yet, but it was filmed in Berks County, PA - around Kutztown, and my Ex-girlfriend's late father has a bit part in the movie...

This may be written for a 12 year old, but I am sure it is entertaining... I mean, I'll never get that 90 minutes back from watching "Coyote Ugly" - but I sat through that...』

(High Times should be ashamed)
『This movie is horrible, the acting is contrived, the plot is looser than a crack (...), and there is enough cliche in this movie to make it an afterschool special. I don't know anyone who smokes and uses the word dude four or five times in a sentence. Why would high times use such cop out dialog? Were they making this movie for Pat Roberts or Tucker Carlson. High Times should be ashamed. Comedy is one thing, but this is as far from comedy as CURSED is from a horror film. Anyone who saw this pile of steaming crap will know what I am talking about. Not really too much to say about this film, except that just because a movie has pot in it certainly does not make it underground or cool. This movie is as underground and cool as Richard Nixon's meeting with Elvis.』

(Fromage)
『This is a pretty bad movie. Suitable for Grade 12 viewers / stoners. Not extremely well made (the dialogue is buried a lot of the time) or well plotted (very contrived and silly storyline). There are no funny characters that make the movie watchable despite its awfulness (like in Little Nicky). The ending, while better than the ending for 'Mars Attacks' is still cheesy in the extreme.

(I say Nope to Dope, but Yes to this Movie!)
『When my husband rented this movie, I was skeptical. After watching it, I had to add it to my DVD collection. The movie revolves around a briefcase of pot with 'bad karma' that no one can seem to get rid of. As the story unfolds, many different people are intertwined and cross each others' paths (including an artist, a she-male, a chick band, pot dealers, the FBI, and the mob) until it all comes together at the end. I LOVE movies like that! So, you can smoke a doobie and watch it for the pot references, or just pop it in the player and watch a comical movie with a funny/happy ending. I LOVE it when everything works out in the end.』

(This is not a bad movie at all (if you like stoner movies...)
『For fans of The Lunachicks, this movie features that band along with a lead role by sexy tattoo-covered singer Theo Kogan. Jason Mewes has a VERY SMALL part, so fans be warned! The story revolves around a briefcase of pot that is stolen and falls into the hands of several different New York City characters (dealers, mobsters, stoners and musicians). The main reason to see this movie would be Theo Kogan, as she shines in this one. And as for the reviewer who compares the amazing film Excalibur to Pot Luck and Flash Gordon? What!!? Flash Gordon was campy fun. John Boorman's 4 star Excalibur is a beautiful, stunning film that I find more entertaining than any of the 3 Lord Of The Rings. A classic in every sense (and the reviews were almost all stellar when it was originally released). I am truly baffled!』

(Adequate introduction)
『The author is a likable guy and he gives some
swell advice about choosing an instrument. I had
owned an accordion for years before watching this
so I had figured out a lot of stuff on my own -
even though I'm still not very good at playing.

His advice is the same sort you would get about
learning the piano - play Hanon exercises. He
shows how to play the bass side of the accordion,
how to shake the bellows, etc...

If you a rank beginner with the accordion and
you don't know music I don't think you'll get much
out of this. If you know music and want to learn
the accordion you'll find it much more useful.

Professor Louie's Rock and Blues Accordion covers
much of the same material and has more stuff as
well - a decent primer on how to play some Blues
jams on the instrument. I would recommend
the Professor's DVD before this one.

(Great for learning the Accordion)
『This accordion dvd is very thorough and very good about covering a broad base of styles and techniques that can be applied in a number of different musical situations.』
『If you are an accordionist, you’ll want this DVD! Joey Miskulin, an acknowledged master of the instrument, gives intermediate players a close-up look at the skills that have made him a successful and highly sought-after studio musician, recording artist and concert performer.

(White Dog: When Man Becomes His Own Worst Enemy.)
『Samuel Fuller's name is synonymous with his 1980 film The Big Red One and with his more controversial films Shock Corridor (1963), The Naked Kiss (1964), and White Dog (1982), which the studio (Paramount) refused to release until 1991 because of its subject: racism. Based on a 1970 semi-autobiographical novel by Romain Gary involving a stray German shepherd, White Dog stars Paul Winfield, Kristy McNichol, Jameson Parker and Burl Ives. It tells the story of an unmarried young actress, Julie Sawyer (McNichol), who takes in a stray white German shepherd for her protection, after accidentally hitting the dog with her car. Unbeknownst to her, the innocent dog has been trained by an extreme racist to attack black people on sight. After discovering the dog will brutally kill any dark-skinned person it sees, Julie takes the dog to a sympathetic Black dog trainer, Keys (Winfield), who obsessively attempts to re-educate the dog to stop attacking blacks. The re-training has an unexpected side-effect, and I won't spoil the plot. Paul Winfield carries the film with his didactic re-education scenes. Fuller's film is ultimately about the realities of human hatred, and the film's final scenes carry its message home. It is unlikely that this film would offend anyone today.

The new Criterion edition of White Dog features a newly restored high-definition digital transfer of the uncut version, approved by producer Jon Davison; new video interviews with producer Davison, co-writer Curtis Hanson, and Sam Fuller's widow, Christa Lang-Fuller; an interview with dog trainer Karl Lewis-Miller; rare photos from the film's production; and a booklet featuring new essays by critics J. Hoberman and Armond White, plus a rare 1982 interview in which Fuller interviews the canine star of the film.

(THIS DOG STILL BITES!)
『In 1982, Samuel Fuller's "WHITE DOG" created a storm of controversy that resulted in a limited theatrical release with no follow-up video until now.

What was falsely labeled an incendiary racist film that could provoke real life violence is instead a bold anti-racist parable about how racism is learned or taught. In the movie the metaphor is a dog that has been trained to attack people with dark skin.

The origin of the story is a harrowing true incident Romain Gary wrote about in Life magazine.

The movie story is simple. Julie Sawyer (Kristy McNichol in her first adult role) is a young actress who, while driving one night, accidentally hits a white German shepherd on a mountain road. She takes it to a vet and tries to find the owner. In the meantime, Julie grows attached to the dog. One night it saves her from a intruder who attempts to rape her. Later, the dog runs away and comes home bloody. On a movie set with Julie, the dog attacks a black actress. Julie realizes the dog has been trained as an attack dog so she takes it to "Noah's Ark" an animal shelter and training facility hoping the dog can be deprogrammed in some way. She is told that the dog is a "white dog," one trained to attack black people. At the facility, Keys (Paul Winfield), a dog expert sees this as an opportunity to see if racial prejudice can be unlearned.

This low-budget film is sometimes heavy-handed but is immensely watchable and the restored uncut widescreen transfer is, as with all Criterion editions, made from the best elements available and is very crisp and clean.

Kristy McNichol has a natural, winning charisma on screen. Her top billing is justified and she has an easy, believable chemistry with the dog (actually five dogs were used).

Paul Winfield dominates the latter half of the film. His performance is focused and intense. I was reminded of a superb dog story in which he starred, 1972's "Sounder."

The great Burl Ives has a small part as the co-owner of "Noah's Ark." It is great to hear that singular voice even if it is only in spoken words.

Director Sam Fuller had a reputation as a tough, cigar-chomping sometimes over-the-top, story-teller. He has been called "the tabloid poet." Fuller did not shy away from controversial issues and in fact helmed other films with racial conflict as a theme. He died in 1997 at the age of 85. This was his last film.

There's a wonderful featurette containing new interviews with producer Jon Davison, co-writer Curtis Hanson ("L.A. Confidential") and Fuller's widow Krista Lang.』

『Samuel Fuller's throat-grabbing exposé on American racism was misunderstood and withheld from release when it was made in the early eighties; today, the notorious film is lauded for its daring metaphor and gripping pulp filmmaking. Kristy McNichol stars as a young actress who adopts a lost German Shepherd, only to discover through a series of horrifying incidents that the dog has been trained to attack black people, and Paul Winfield plays the animal trainer who tries to cure him. A snarling, uncompromising vision, White Dog is a tragic portrait of the evil done by that most corruptible of animals: the human being.
