Usually ships in 1 to 3 weeks IPhone 3G used's review (Better than most low budget films) 『You can see that this film was made with a bare-minimum budget but it is entertaining nonetheless. A physically abused woman tries to avoid her "loseeeer" boyfriend and ends up on the street with no place to go. A boxing promoter and another woman feel sorry for her situation and offer her $50 to look "pretty" and hold up round cards at a local boxing tournament.
After the tournament, the three go to a bar but the woman gets bored and leaves asking the promoter's chauffer to take her home. The chauffer was one of the fighters at the tournament and she strikes up a conversation with him and learns that he teaches some kids how to box when he is not driving.
With all the anger in her because of her boyfriend, she shows up at the boxer's gym asking for lessons. He finally agrees and the woman is determined to learn how to fight to get back at her boyfriend. Anger is her inspiration and allows her to get through the vigorous training.
Through sheer luck she is able to win her first match and also to stand up to her ex-boyfriend. Obviously a romance develops between her and her boxing coach, which later impedes on their professional relationship.
If you take the movie for what it is you will be surprised at what the director was able to do on so limited a budget. I give it a little bit better than 3 stars.』
(Dreary, pointless little film) 『I purchased this film because of the misleading cover art. I mean, it stars former Baywatch babe Erika Eleniak, and she's lookin' pretty hot and (...)on the cover. The scene depicted is actually in the movie - for about 5 seconds. It's part of a montage. Whoever did the wardrobe for this movie apparently went to the local Goodwill and cleaned out the "free" bin. Eleniak wears crummy looking sweats throughout the movie, about as far from (...)as they could make her. Thanks moviemakers - thanks for the intentionally deceptive cover.
If you're thinking this is like a female Rocky movie, forget it. It would be like Rocky if Rocky didn't have the climactic fight at the end, but instead he just walked up to Apollo Creed and smarted off to him, and then the credits rolled.
Even as a Lifetime movie of the week, this thing is weak. It's more like a Lifetime afternoon movie, broadcast shortly after lunch, on a Tuesday. The characters just aren't the least bit developed. They act like 99% of irresponsible teenagers would act if put in the same situations, but these people are adults, which makes them come off as a bunch of losers. Eleniak is in what we're supposed to assume is an abusive relationship, but instead of getting a job and getting her own place, she gets a hobby. She makes a new friend, and uses her place as a crash pad when she doesn't feel like going home. Although her friend is really the only likable character in the film, the whole friendship goes nowhere and really serves no purpose except to pad out the screen time. She's also got a boxing coach, and his gym is going bankrupt. He could save it with his new Baywatch boxer, but he screws that up. Loser. Eleniak gets it on with him, and we get a montage that encompasses her entire amateur boxing career. One is left with the impression that she's about ready for her second amateur fight, but instead she's turning pro. So much for this being a boxing movie. So much for it being a romantic movie, because that goes absolutely nowhere. So much for it being a drama, because it ends just when one would think the last act should be starting.
Just a dreary and dull little waste. It can't decide what it wants to be, so it apportions equal time to each subplot. Sort of a little bit of everything and not much of anything. It's not Eleniak's fault - this script is hopeless and the director was utterly clueless.』
(Thinking outside the box) 『Before I first saw this movie I was expecting a Lifetime channel movie of the week, but it turned out to be a little better than that. In fact I thought it had a hint of independent movieness about it or it could have been the small budget. Maybe it was both. Kind of a quiet movie, small cast, and urban Detroit setting. Erika portrays a woman, Patty, caught up in an abusive relationship and struggles to find her way out of it. Hooking up with a Tommy, a would-be amateur boxer who also runs a boxing gym, Patty asks him to help train her. Her reasoning? Maybe to take out her frustrations over being defenseless and punched out by her boyfriend or to somehow seek her own independence. Patty's boxing interest takes off and although becomes a novelty at first, through the magic of film she ends up in the championship bout of the year.
The chemistry between the Tommy and Patty was nice and restrained at first to allow the plot to unfold before the fireworks go off between them. James Colby was a good find for this movie and thought he had boxing and all the mythology about it at the right temperature for this movie which wasn't about boxing in my opinion. Not about what they could get out of boxing, but what boxing would make of them - stronger in life inside and outside the ring hopefully. Peripheral characters include the opportunistic boxing promoter, a sympathetic girlfriend and the desperate loser boyfriend all of whom put in good performances in their roles.
I like that Erika tried to pick an atypical movie project that stretches her talent and this one does it. Never would have expected her to portray a reasonable fascimile of a boxer, but she does pull it off. She looks really cut in this movie and although a lot of the boxing was sloppy and wild, in the climatic Rocky fight against a really buff opponent (professional maybe?) she looked like she had done some good training for this movie. Only nit-picky thing I had was I wished they hadn't beauty groomed her to be so good looking in this movie (maybe it's just her natural beauty and she can't help it!), but a dress-down like Cameron Diaz in "Being John Malkovich" where she was so grungy and unrecognizable would have made the character more sympathetic and empowering when she succeeds. And the most important thing - was there nudity? Well... if I had directed there would have been the quintessential shower scene, but alas they didn't ask me. She does have a brief nude scene from the side in a love scene with James Colby where I was still wowed with her hot bod. Not much stuff on the dvd except audio setup and chapter selections, actor commentary or making of the movie would have been nice to see though. Another good Erika movie to see is A Pyromanic's Love Story with a strong performances by John Leguizamo and Sadie Frost.』
(This is another "Knockout" movie....) 『..as in similar to the movie "Knockout" and not really a great boxing movie. It's more of a cute girl doing boxing. Erika Eleniak looks to be in great shape for the movie. It's too bad the script is really boring that you can't get more into it. Even with Erika in great shape, she's no boxer which becomes quite apparent during her training and fight sequences. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. As always, they choose a real female boxer as an opponent but don't spend enough time training the star to complement the adversary. About the only good refreshing thing about this movie was the coach and his gym. It was interesting to see a young coach and his bviews about boxing and training. Don't know if that's enough to carry this movie for some. It wasn't for me. Nope, definitely can't recommend this movie unless it goes to deep discount, and you're just bored at 12 AM.』 『After years of domestic abuse, Patty (Erika Eleniak), finds an outlet for her anger in the ring of a community boxing club. She's spotted by the club fight promoter Fred (John Doman) and one of his round-club gals, June (Aunjanue Ellis). With the help of a trainer, former hopeful Tommy (James Colby), she begins to learn how to box and gain self-esteem. Tommy sees Patty's rage and tries to help her channel it in the ring. Patty learns a valuable lesson-the difference between fighting and boxing. When you fight, you lose. When you box, you win! As Patty's talents grow stronger so does her relationship with Tommy. In the end, Patty earns the self-confidence to stand up for what she believes in, the power to take control of her life and make it her own.』

(Great one) 『Great Instructional Blues Finger picking DVD if u are a beginner in acoustic blues and want to go to an intermediate level this is the right DVD to Purchase. It introduces the finger picking style and takes you up to be a fairly accomplished blues finger picker player. I really enjoyed this DVD, from 1 year now I'm still learning from it. If u r really serious about playing the Blues don't miss this DVD a lot of instructions far more advanced than the first one, but if u r a novice just start with the first one. 』
(This is a lot of fun!) 『Volume one was a great way to introduce acoustic blues. Happy assumes nothing in terms of the player's knowledge, and his enthusiasm for acoustic blues is contagious. By assuming nothing, he covers the very basics...even down to how to count, and then moves on to some very EASY to play songs that are...VERY EASY to "dress up" and sound quite impressive. Volume 2 picks up where Volume 1 left off and is also a lot of fun. The didatic aspect of the DVD is undeniable, but I found, especially with these DVDs on the acoustic blues, that I was learning without really recognizing it because I was enjoying myself. I have many of Homespun DVDs (I consider a library of Homespun instuctional DVDs a must for every guitar player---and every piano player (my son) who seeks a solid education) and some are quite challenging; where one DVD might last me for months of lessons----the Blues series are fun and learning is coming along fine. Happy shows that the blues variations are just endless.....and blues is not all "blue" or depressing music, but rather can be quite uplifting. His love of the blues goes back to his early teacher, whom he quotes often, and it feels like the viewer and student is being let in on some old, old secrets. Great to learn these songs, and then to teach them to my kids. It is funny to hear a 5 year old wake up and sing, "Good morning, blues, how do you do?".
Homespun is the premier music instruction today. I will continue to build my DVD library, which now includes instruction on acoustic guitar, blues, folk, solo playing, general instruction, as well as Harmonica, Drums, Piano, and the Irish Tin Whistle. My entire family loves music and is benefiting from the great work by the Traums.』
IPhone 3G used's review (Rohmer scores again) 『Anyone who watches an Eric Rohmer film and is not entranced must be tired of life. His movies explore, in a way that is unique in the cinema, the myriad relations between people in and out of relationships.
Could this movie have been made in any country other than France? No, it could not! Is this a good thing? Well, there have been quite a few nearly unwatchable French films, particularly in the last 15 years, but I defy anyone who has even the smallest romantic bone in their body to watch this and not be uplifted, moved, charmed.』
(The grand pursuit) 『This is the second movie in Rohmer's series "Comedies and Proverbs." A young woman, Sabine (played by Beatrice Romand) gets fed up with having affairs with married men and decides to get married herself. She picks out a lawyer, Edmond (Andre Dussollier) and goes after him straightaway - even though he's not the least bit interested in her. He tries to be polite, but she just won't get the message, she keeps coming on. Finally, in a rather disappointing and far-fetched scene in Edmond's office, he finally gets his point across that he's not interested (his reasons seem contrived and dumb - a real let down). Up to that point, however, the movie is quite good, though of all Rohmer's movies this could be the least substantial, his closest work to a piece of fluff.』
(My First Foreign Film, and Definitely Not My Last.) 『Eric Rohmer's second movie, A Good Marriage, is the first one I've seen, and my being a big fan of Arielle Dombasle aside, it is a very good one. Sabine (Beatrice Romand) is tired of being used and treaded on lightly by her married boyfriend, so after dumping him, she decides she is going to get married. As she explains to her artist friend Clarisse (Arielle Dombasle) she is going to get herself a husband without bedding him first and that's that. She hasn't any prospects, but Clarisse deliberately tries to push her and her cousin Edmond (Andre' Dussollier), who is a lawyer, together at a sister's wedding.
From the beginning, it is very clear that he isn't interested as he just runs out after a phone call. Clarisse insists she has recognized love at first sight and, though Sabine is cool about it, she single-mindedly and relentlessly begins to persue him, determined to make him her husband "whether he likes it or not!"
One can admire Sabine on the one hand for fearlessly going after what she wants, having decided to up her scruples and better things for herself. On the other hand, one gets annoyed at her childlike tantrum-throwing behavior, particularly at her birthday party when he shows up late. I actually felt sorry for him as she wouldn't stop calling his office, then eventually showed up there for a one-on-one in which he informs her he's written her a letter. I also took her side as he spewed off the same old excuse in subtitles: "It's not you, it's me." A man who avoids you and sends you a letter is pointedly telling you that it's you, and saying that it's him is a paltry attempt to be kind.
I do like how she is able to pick herself up and start all over again, realizing her mistake, and I love the humorous ray of hope at the end, which I won't give away. Sabine is a typical young woman learning all about herself and relating to others around her, and Clarisse is her eternally optimistic, romantic best friend. Their relationship and Sabine's with her family say much about her personality and attitude. This is a meaningful, yet fun and enjoyable movie that teaches important lessons about your will and others' being complete opposites. A good, solid story free of the garbage that permeates too many Hollywood productions. This one is clean and highly enjoyable. 』
(Absolutely delightful) 『The movie is from Rohmer series of proverbs, and it is very kind and charming. For me, it was a story of a young girl coming out of age, about a conflict between her determination to achieve a goal despite all odds by trying to manipulate others and how life unfolds to shock the her that other people's emotions are not simple matter. What I love about Rohmer's films is the kindness and warmth that radiates, although the stories are somewhat melancholic. I wish movies like this be done nowadays, too, without that garish vulgarity that blights modern cinema. This is not for Hollywood lovers, therefore.』
(YOU SHALL MARRY ME !) 『Second of the famous " comedies and proverbs " of French director Eric Rohmer, A GOOD MARRIAGE is a less serious movie than THE AVIATOR'S WIFE, the first movie of this great artistic achievement. One smiles and laughs a lot during A GOOD MARRIAGE, and that's not so common in Rohmer's filmography !
One fine day, Sabine, a 25 years old art student, decides to get married. She is sure that she won't have any problem at all to find the right man ; she's pretty, young and smart. A handsome Parisian lawyer, played by a terrific André Dussolier, will be the chosen one. Without knowing it. One suffers (if you're a man, of course) with the poor man, absolutely not in love with Sabine, trying to escape from the charming girl's arms without hurting her.
A GOOD MARRIAGE is showing in a comic manner that will is not sufficient to obtain what one desires proving, if necessary, by treating this subject that it is definitely not a Hollywood product.
Images and sound are surprisingly good for a Winstar DVD... but extra-features are still under-average.
A DVD dedicated to bachelors.』
『The second of Eric Rohmer's "Comedies and Proverbs" series,A Good Marriagestars Béatrice Romand as Sabine, a headstrong, emotional Roller coaster of a searching single woman. She impulsively leaves her married lover one night and decides she's going to marry, setting out to find her man with a mixture of romantic idealism and calculated determination. When her best friend Clarisse (Arielle Dombasle, fromPauline at the Beach) introduces Sabine to her handsome cousin Edmond (André Dussollier,Perceval), she seems to have found her mate; it's just a matter of convincing him of the impending marriage. But, alas, all is not so simple in Rohmer's world of modern love. Romand's Sabine is a delightful conundrum: resolute, firm, and fiercely independent on the one hand; moody, impulsive, and emotionally fragile on the other. Like all of Rohmer's films, this is driven by conversation, from uncomfortable small talk to confessions between girlfriends, but Sabine also lives her life, passionately pursuing her goals with the single-minded zest of a woman on a mission. Her road to love may take a few unplanned detours, but Rohmer, the eternal romantic, concludes the film on a delightfully hopeful note packed in a few glances and a flirty smile.--Sean Axmaker』

And the cast is hilarious. My favorite character (aside from Kevin)is the bird/homeless woman who ends up being a sweetheart. I always choke up at the end when she and Kevin hug it out. Again, the little guy meets up with colorful people on the margins of society (including a pigeon woman played by Brenda Fricker) and again he gets into a prop-heavy battle with Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. The latter sequence is even worse than the first film in terms of violence inflicted on the two villains (director Chris Columbus, who also made the first film, can't seem to emphasize the slapstick over the graphic effects of the fight).
