(A Perfect Disappointment)
『I like a special type of book when I'm commuting. The plot should have plenty of action, the sillier and more predictable the better. The characters should be easily identifiable and two-dimensional (one-dimensionable is even better). In short, the book should distract me without really keeping me from paying attention to the road. This book was perfect.

So why was I disappointed? The description of the novel on the back of the case said that after her husband's death, Nell begins to suspect "fowl play." There were no chickens in the book. I felt cheated.』

(MARY HIGGINS CLARK HITS THE SCREEN)
『I was always a fan of MURDER SHE WROTE, trying to outguess the hero in discovering who the murderer was. You'll find the same kind of mindless enjoyment in this adaptation of Mary Higgins Clark's novel. Sean Young plays an aspiring congresswoman whose selfish architect husband (Christopher Shyer) objects to her returning to the political scene. Her father is a congressman (Lloyd Bochner), so it seems natural to follow in his footsteps. But then hubby's boat explodes and Young is left a widower, but someone's trying to kill her! Peter Deluise is the chunky detective who tries to get to the bottom of the crimes. You won't have a whole lot of trouble figuring out the outcome, but it's fun and well performed.』
『To catch a killer youve got to follow the money, no matter where, or to whom, it leads. Sean Young (No Way Out) stars in this riveting thriller based on the #1 best-selling novel by Mary Higgins Clark, the "Queen of Suspense."

Prominent politician "Mac" MacDermott (Lloyd Bochner) has been grooming his granddaughter Nell (Young) to follow in his footsteps. Unfortunately, Nell's architect husband Adam is under investigation for his part in an infamous real estate and construction scam. When Adam and several business associates die in a fiery explosion, Nell vows to clear his name, enlisting the help of a detective (Peter DeLuise) and a mysterious medium who claims she can contact Adam from beyond the grave. But as Nell delves deeper and learns the truth about her husband's life - and death - she becomes the target of a shocking conspiracy!』

(great movie)
『I love the old disney movies that have been cleaned up. they are so much crisper and full of color. One of my favorites!!』

(Robin Hood, As I Remembered)
『As with many stories, this one comes from several versions, even within the Disney group. This is basically the version I remembered of the animated presentations of Robin Hood. Look for some of the Robin Hood cliches, like the arrow splitting the arrow already in the bulls eye (Can this really be done? Check with the Myth Busters!)

Sherwood Forest may be close to home. During one of the fight scenes, I distinctly heard the "fight song" "On Wisconsin." How did this end up in the movie? Was this some kind of product placement?

Buy it. Enjoy it. Give a copy to a kid you know. Keep a copy for the kid you are.』

(Listen to Peter Ustinov!)
『My kids and I find the movie very entertaining and charming -- 3-year-old Martin wants this movie and only this movie no matter the myriad alternatives we offer.

I remember growing up with the soundtrack playing all the time on LP, so I have a fond place in my heart for it.

But, having seen it more time than I care to count, I still cannot get enough of Peter Ustinov's voice characterizations of Prince John. His phrasings are a comic tour de force. A real masterstroke. And he's clearly having the time of his life sounding everything from dictatorial commands to loud thumb-sucking and crying for his mommy.

As a side benefit, those who loved Baloo the Bear in The Jungle Book get a second chance to watch him, as Phil Harris voices the character of Little John who is drawn as -- Baloo the Bear! Unfortunately, the songs don't quite rise to the level of "Bear Necessities," but they're cute and catchy nonetheless.

Most highly recommended for all ages.』

(Great flick - presentation a mixed bag)
『Robin Hood (Most Wanted Edition)

Not known as one of Disney's better animated features, but still quite watchable. The repetitive animation reminds me of 1970s cartoon "shortcuts" that were common - look at the animal parade in the opening credits.

After a side-by-side comparison, I think the movie is better framed by the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Still, it's hard not to like a Disney animated feature with Phil Harris' voice.』

(Disney's Robin Hood)
『This is the best animated version. Our kids loved it when they were young and now our grandkids love it. They watched three times the first day.』
『Studio: Buena Vista Home Video Release Date: 09/19/2008』
『A minor classic from Disney, this 1973 all-animal, all-animated musical version of the familiar story is more charming than one might expect. Perhaps it's the warm, chummy take on key relationships within the legend--the way Robin Hood (Brian Bedford) gets twitterpated whenever the subject of Maid Marian (Monica Evans) comes up or the way best pal Little John (Phil Harris voicing a variation on his own Baloo fromThe Jungle Book) admonishes the Sherwood Forest hero, "Aw, Rob, why dontcha just marry the girl?" (Then, of course, there's the canny "casting" of the romantic leads as foxes: Robin the sly one and Marian the, well, foxy one.) The rest of the vocal cast is lively and eclectic: Peter Ustinov, Andy Devine, Terry-Thomas, George Lindsey. Roger Miller provides the songs and voice for the minstrel character Allan-A-Dale. The film is ably directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, whose decades of work in Disney's animation division helped create the studio's rich legacy.--Tom Keogh

(This is NOT your father's VHS movie)
『Caveat emptor ... The DVD does NOT contain all the scenes from the original movie (I have an original VHS as well). I made in inquiry to the publisher but never received a response. Transfer is as good as can be expected but for some reason is incomplete.』

(A genius filmmaker)
『Perhaps nothing in this world compares to the individual who lacks talent, even the basic movie making skills, and despitde his liabilities manages to actually create a legendary film. These rare indiviuals, through tenacity or insanity, effectively rises above that forgettable level of total mediocrity to rise to the highest ranks of thos who have earned a name in the film industry. Ed Wood personified this. But the cross dressing Ed Wood was brazen, actually attempting to insert plot, storyline, and even sound into the mix. No, the writer and director of this movie even circumvented these factors to rise to a level even lower than Ed Wood and he is still making money from this film. The formula is simple. Find scantily clad women, two potentially unknown leads, create a storyline on the back of a matchbook, and do some guerilla filmmaking in the seedy portions of LA. This film doesn't even include sex scene unless you consider strangulation some sexual fetish. No social message, no clear arc, nothing resembling a good movie. And you will probably love watching it because in your heart, your soul, you still secretly cheer for that nobody, who hasn't a shrewd of talent, who is blessed by the mighty God who rule Hollywood, and actually end up making money on a movie. Great movie if you keep that in mind.』

(great DVD, except for...)
『I know I'm in the minority, but "The Hollywood Strangler Meets the Skid Row Slasher," is, to me, Ray Dennis Steckler's best movie, which is rather astounding, considering it's just 72 minutes of the same repetitious scenes. This DVD has a good deal of bonus gristle (probably more than the film deserves, but I'm not complaining), with two commentary tracks (one with Steckler, one with Joe Bob Briggs), a still gallery, and interviews with Steckler and Carolyn Brandt. The remastered sound and picture is superb for a Media Blasters release (though the image is a tad grainy). The one problem--and I don't know whether I should be more ticked off about this--is a bug within the DVD encoding (that has to be it, since I exchanged one copy for another copy that had the exact same problem) that occurs after scene selection 8, stops, and skips into scene 10, technically excising the whole scene at the modeling agency. Sheesh. Well, aside from that--and it'll probably be a minor complaint to anyone else--this is a good treatment of a highly disrespected film.』

(don't understand the hype)
『So many people cited this as their very favorite Christmas movie, and I'd never seen it, so I figured I should watch it.

Basically, it's about a boy in the 1940s who wants a BB gun for Christmas. It's set in the 1940s. Rather than a single, linear story, it's a series of scenes about their life in the 1940s. Did I mention that it's set in the 1940s? Argh. Obviously, the filmmakers spent a lot of time and money getting the setting just right, because they beat the audience over the head with it every chance they got. Drove me up a wall, in case you didn't notice.

It's also got the first-person voice-overs from grown-up Ralphie. If you watched The Wonder Years, it's like that. A grown-up navel-gazing about his childhood. It's almost as entertaining as listening to someone tell you about their dreams.

There were some amusing scenes, of course, and I even laughed aloud several times. And I really enjoyed the end. It was such a nice parent moment--that no matter how disappointing his own life was, he could still give that joy to his son. Awwwww....

I'd guess it would be a more appealing movie if I had an idealized view of childhood or of the 1940s (it was set in the 1940s, by the way). Unfortunately, I have neither. Or if I liked Hollywood's version of a "cute kid." I have kids. Three of them. They're cute--or were, when they were younger. I tend to find Hollywood's version of cute obnoxious and whiny.

On the other hand, I can't agree with the (very few) negative reviews--almost all of which complained about either vulgarity or *gasp* a gun! for Christmas! *ack!*--either. It was the 1940s. Kids had guns. They had BB guns in the 1960s, too--well, the boys did, at least--I had to borrow my little brother's. And it's pretty obvious that vulgarity doesn't bother me--I give Blazing Saddles 5 stars.

I'm glad I finally saw it, but I don't think I'll be watching it again.』

(UGH!!!)
『Do people not understand what matted means yet? I mean come on!!! Its not hard...This movie was shot in 1 37 1 which equals to (fullscreen). The theatre version was matted, meaning they cut off the top and bottom which is intended...The tv (fullscreen) version is the original 1 37 1..So when you buy the widescreen version its the matted version, exactly the one saw in theatres...So for all you ppl who think this was a widescreen movie cut into fullscreen then cut again to widescreen are wrong wrong wrong!!! come on ppl!!!...Read the technical stuff about the movie before you make a bad review....Home Alone, Christmas Vacation and this movie all were shot in 1 37 1 then matted for theatres, so if you buy a widescreen matted version its the theatre version!!! Which is the correct version....』

(Cashing in on its populairty by exploiting its fans...)
『Up until this point, Naruto has been an amazing and well-thought up series, and has kept me watching it simply because it never ceased to amaze me. But I realize that at the Sasuke Retrieval Arc, the anime studio that brought the series to life from its comic book source hit a brick wall; they feared that they may catch up to it and may not give its creator enough time to put the storyline into fruition and thus may ruin the consistent flow and pacing that the series had (I believe it was at least two chapters per episode).

But instead of taking a break or even taking an entirely different path with the storyline altogether, the anime company decide to throw in what may be considered the worst filler to ever grace television. This wouldn't have really mattered, but it stretched for over 100+ episodes. This serves nothing to its fans other than to cash in on its immense popularity. As a fan of Naruto, I feel insulted because this particular anime company seems to believe that fans wouldn't care about the quality of the series, as long as there's a consistent quantity available.

Now I don't have a problem with some filler. I've seen anime that have had filler episodes and they were considerably good. But episode after episode of Naruto filler and you start to wonder why they even bothered. It's like they flocked to the internet and read subpar fanfiction as their source of inspiration. Simply put, each "arc" consists of Naruto and his friends looking for Sasuke, running to a village, meeting a key character that doesn't like him and Naruto doesn't like key character; they discover some plot element that puts people in danger or may be significant to finding Sasuke, they fight and win, then at the end of it all, Naruto and key character become best pals even though any leads they have to finding Sasuke are a dud.

Do not waste your time with this box set or the future ones. Even if you are a big fan of the show, they are not worth the effort. I understand it is not Viz Media's fault that Naruto has an endless desert of filler episodes, but there are other ways to support the series without buying these box sets. Go out and buy the comic books, or buy the franchise video games that are available on the 360 or PS3. Or best yet, buy the Naruto Shippuden box sets as soon as they come out (or you can even watch the latest Shippuden episodes on the official Naruto website for free). But do not waste your time with this one.』

(The Filler Episodes Are Here But Don't Be To Upset They're Actually Pretty Good)
『Yes this set will have what a lot of fans call the filler episodes of Naruto that the animators for the series had to make until the manga series made more chapters so the animators didn't pass the manga chapter issues. I feel that these were actually pretty good as you get to see Naruto and his friends interact more with each other than they do in the manga series. You'll see Naruto teaming up with people like Hinata and Kiba to do a bounty hunt for a supposed criminal, team up with Team Gai as they help a terrorized village from a notorious group of rogue ninja, and there are episodes of when Naruto teams up with just one partner for jobs like when he teams up with Ino who's hired to be a body double for a feudal lords daughter. Some of the episodes are funny and comedic while others are dramatic and action packed but for the episodes still entertaining. The animation is still pretty good and clear and the audio is great as well nice and sharp. And as always the voice actors for both the dubbed and subbed versions did a superb job. So until the Naruto Shippuden episodes arrive on dvd for us enjoy these episodes as they are very entertaining and fun to watch for any Naruto fan out there...』

(Filler isn't the only problem...)
『As the other reviews posted have stated the episodes that begin here right to the end of the series are filler The $34.99 pre-order price on box set 10 seems to validate this as 11 drops to $29.99.

Filler isn't the only problem, however. Another major let down with these episodes is animation quality. Shippuuden was released directly after this series ends without missing a beat. Sadly this must have required the top artists working on the project because they definitely didn't do any of these episodes. The consistently beautiful animation was one of the major factors that first drew me to Naruto. It's not found here and actually seems to get progressively worse.

I'd give every box set up to this point a 5 star rating. They are packaged well and pretty fairly priced compared to a lot of other anime series' I've bought in the past ($29.99 a dvd for DragonBall Z with just 3 episodes comes to mind.) A lot of work has to go into the dubbing of a Japanese series to English, and you can play these dvds with direct translation subtitles and it's nearly word for word. This is one of my favorite parts of the box sets because I have watched some translated anime (again DBZ comes to mind) that left me wondering what the hell they were doing when they started making up their own dialogue. In addition each box set has had a major development or introduction of characters and plot twists that leaves you anxiously waiting for the next set. These episodes actually do quite the opposite too often making you cringe at how bad they get.

I still plan to buy the sets for my collection as I recommend other fans do to support the series and anime in general. Just take the reviews here into consideration before you start to watch them to help ease the pain. You can also take solace in the fact that Shippuuden comes after these do and makes up for it.』

(Filled with fillers)
『If any of you happen to be purchasing this box set, you may or may not know that this where the filler arc begins. These episodes were not originally in the manga, but instead show events that happen before the Shippuden the next installment of the Naruto series.

While they weren't in the original story, the fillers aren't really that bad at all. They're just not as action packed, plus some of the episodes really don't make much sense at all. And don't go any near as in depth when it comes to plot. While some of the arcs are semi-long, most are not. The plot of the arcs instead resembles more of a Saturday morning cartoon as many of the filler episodes are stand-alone and don't require knowledge of the previous episode to understand what's happening. And so some people who watch Naruto don't enjoy them, others do. If you're a big Naruto fan and want to complete your collection than go for it. If you don't like the fillers than don't waste your time, it's a personally choice. I'd say it's worth a few laughs and I plan on picking it up.』

(Well I guess you should get it... IF...)
『IF you are a super dooper Naruto Fan, this is the beginning of the SUPER FILLERS of the series which DOES NOT Follow the Manga at all. For those who want something to FILL their time until SHIPPUDEN Box Sets Arrive this would be what you want.

For those who want true to the books STOP HERE your collection is done. Go buy other sets.

(Watch "Cannery Row", it will become one of your favorites too!)
『The film "Cannery Row" is one of my all time favorites! Yes, I have read the novel "Cannery Row" many times and I love it and I did read "Sweet Thursday" many years ago. I know to some what I am about to say would seem sacrilegious, but I actually feel that this film improved the story of "Cannery Row". It gave the character "Doc" a love interest which helps to round out the story and made the whole flow of the story much, much better, omitting only parts of the book which were relatively minor. I especially appreciated the omission of the large number of deaths which took place in the first half of the book. In the film they would have just made the tone of the story wayyyyy too dark! I also like the amalgamation made with several characters in the book into one or two characters in the film and even the changing of some characters such as store owner "Lee Chong" into "Joseph and Mary" (one male character!). For one thing, I just can't see "Lee Chong" dressed up like Dracula. I also love the history made for "Doc" in the film (which is not in the book), about his having been a potentially great pro baseball player who quits at a young age, and his connection to the character "The Seer", in the film. One of my favorite scenes from the film which was in the novel was the wonderful scene of fulfilling the legend of the "Beer Milkshake" and "Doc`s" reaction after tasting it. All in all, the book is like the film but just gives us more background to certain events in the film and the film adds some things to the story, which while not intended by John Steinbeck, still brings the story more depth and flavor.

The film has perfect casting! There isn't a single actor's performance that isn't simply wonderful. There are many standout performances in this film. I have never been a big fan of most of Nick Nolte's work, but I truly can't see anyone else but him portraying "Doc". He's superb and strikes just the right tone of an educated man of science living in a place where he is surrounded by mostly uneducated salt-of-the-earth types. Debra Winger brings exactly the kind of feistiness, vulnerability and sexiness needed by the role of "Suzy". Even here voice, which can be a bit high pitched when she is excited, is in itself endearing in this setting. M. Emmet Walsh as the chief bum "Mack" who has been in countless movies as a supporting actor gives one of his finest performances here. Walsh brings a harmless abrasiveness to the role while still making him thoroughly likable. Frank McRae as the strong but mentally challenged "Hazel" brings a heartwarming innocence to the role which was different from the way "Hazel" is written in the book. I prefer the film "Hazel". The addition of the plot thread where "Hazel" is convinced by a psychic reading that he is destined to become the President of the United States and the subsequent anguish this causes him always warms my heart and makes me smile. The town Madame and owner of the Bear Flag Restaurant brothel, who in the book is called Dora but in the film is called Fauna who is based upon a real Madame named Flora, is precisely played by Audra Lindley. She has the "flaming orange hair" and plays the flamboyant style but earthy wisdom of the character to a "T". Another great performance is from Sunshine Parker who portrays the character of "The Seer" in the film. He might be a bit old for the role, in comparison to "Doc", but he brings a sweetness to the role that makes one smile and makes me cry every time I see the scene near the end of the film. Also, I would agree that, most of the time, narration in a film can be a bit annoying (example: original theatrical release of "Blade Runner"!) and can draw away from the film, but not in this case. In this film you have the wonderful avuncular voice of the great John Huston, the actor/director. He mixes in just enough narration to the film to make it comforting but not annoying. In fact, after I saw this movie the first time from then on when I read the "Cannery Row" novel I hear John Huston's voice in my head when I read the narrative of the book. For that matter the same goes for all the other similar characters between the book and film too!

The Direction of the film was extremely well done by David S. Ward and he deserves a great deal more credit and recognition for this film than has ever been accorded to him.

As far as the sets and scenery in the film, anyone who has lived in a fishing village knows how accurate the sets and scenery were are in this film. I have never lived in Monterey, California but I have lived in or frequently visited many fishing towns along the coast of Oregon, such as Bandon, Newport, Charleston and Coos Bay, and every time I watch this film it is like coming home to those places.

The music of the film is perfect. Mostly jazz and swamp boogie piano, much of which was played by the great jazz pianist Dr. John, along with some finely chosen classical pieces brings a great flavor to the film and helps the viewer even further in feeling they are transported back to that time.

Finally, it is a special kind of film that makes you wish you lived in an economically depressed, industrialized town that stinks like dead fish and where you live around professional bums and a whorehouse! I've lived in similar places and watching this film always gives me the yearning to go back to those towns. Many people who like or even love this film have said that it is one of the most underrated and under-recognized films in movie history and I couldn't agree more! This film deserved many Oscar's which it didn't receive. I have been waiting for years and years for this film to finally be released on DVD and I am thrilled beyond words to see that my wish is finally going to come true! I transferred my VHS copy to DVD-R a couple of years ago so that my tape wouldn't deteriorate any further but the original VHS release was always substandard and of poor quality. It was in full screen and when the transfer was made they didn't even properly center the picture, so even bits of the opening credits are cut off at the edge of the screen. I hope this will be a Widescreen release which this film so desperately needs and deserves so we can see the film finally as the Director intended it to be seen. I think it will help bring this wonderful film to the attention of a whole new generation of film lovers and bring it the recognition it has missed in the passed.
I couldn't give a higher recommendation for this film than "See it, you will LOVE it"!』

(Finally!)
『Finally! I've been waiting for this to hit DVD for years! I was just about to break down and get it on VHS, and now here it is!』

(A suggestion to Tom Keogh)
『Dear Tom Keogh, re: your review, verisimilitude? egregious contrivances? Just a suggestion to you: get the hell over yourself.』

(DVD disaster)
『The original film was in beautiful widescreen. The DVD is cropped and therefore should be avoided--a disaster and a shame that Warner Bros. couldn't show proper respect to a beautiful film. Don't waste your money on this.』

(Finally . . . on DVD)
『I am so excited that the DVD will soon be available for this wonderful movie. It is one of my top 10 movies that I have been waiting years to come out on DVD. I highly recommend it. Love the dance scene, one of the best movie moments ever. Love the whole quirky, funny, sweet movie!!!!』
『This 1982 effort at adapting John Steinbeck'sSweet ThursdayandCannery Rowis barely watchable, salvaged only by the thoughtful performances of Nick Nolte as a marine biologist and Debra Winger as a drifter. David S. Ward (Down Periscope) made his directorial debut and thoroughly botched such essentials as pacing and verisimilitude. (The sets look as artificial as any of Francis Ford Coppolla's more egregious contrivances.) If you can stay with it, however, there are plenty of good acting moments to hang your hat on.--Tom Keogh

『The book was helpful. I ordered the book for vegtable gardening and at least half of the book is devoted to flowers. Otherwise, the dealer was escellent.』
