(Beautiful but repetitive)
『This movie definitely has some excellent cinematography and beautiful landscapes in the scenery, but I found it very boring. It seems that for half of the movie all that is going on is people are walking down the mountain then back up with water, then repeat. The drama unfolds with some slow motion shots of people almost tripping and/or spilling the water. I have to say there are some intriguing moments though. If you must see this movie, I would recommend the box set 'Beautiful Women of China'. For a few dollars more it includes this movie, Ju-Dou, and Life Show. Please note that as in the Ju-Dou individual DVD reviews, the video transfer quality is sub-par for Ju-Dou in the box set as well.』

(Beautiful and poignant)
『This film won:

Best Actress, Shanghai International Film Festival
Best Picture, Best Director, Shanghai Film Critics Award
Silver People's Choice Award, India International Film Festival

This film is a visual poem, just simply beautiful. The story quietly tells the hardships of bringing precious drinking water to a Hunan mountain village. All the villagers---men AND women, have to help, carrying the heavy water through a narrow, rocky pass to this mountain village. The main characters are Ah-ming and A-Shui, they love each other but Ah-ming is forced into an arranged marriage. Ah-ming's wife eventually leaves, and Ah-shui is forced to go the city for a while to find work. The story is told from the point of view of a visitor involved in a difficult dam project to help the village.

(He knows his stuff!)
『I thoroughly savored this DVD. Mark Phillips is DA BOMB!!! Seriously, there's truly nothing snobby about him. He's funny, charming, and doesn't seem to take himself too seriously. I am really a "beer gal," but thanks to Mark I'm exploring new worlds of wine!』

(Great Wine Course)
『We went to Napa Valley and brought along this DVD set and thoroughly enjoyed learning about wine and tasting wine while we were driving through the beautiful vineyards and stopping at some for tastings. Mark Phillips talks about wine in an easy-to-understand fashion and makes it a lot of fun! It was perfect for our trip!』

(Stop Wine - ing!)
『Stop Wine-ing! If you haven't purchased this entertaining, yet most educational DVD, you are definitely missing out. Not only does Mark do a fabulous job "teaching" and sharing his wine tips, it is a great resource to use for a theme party. Living outside the United States, we've "featured" this fun and entertaining DVD at several "representational" events promoting American wines and sharing a delightful side of American culture! The "hands-on" interaction encourages lots of fun and laughter - even amongst the stuffiest of guests. Don't delay, get yours today and stop Wine-ing!』

『Enjoying Wine with Mark Phillips

I thoroughly enjoyed this pbs series by Mark Phillips on wine. Geared towards beginners who want a "sane" approach to enjoying wine. Loved the tip about making ice cubes with wine for use with cooking later on. I hate wasting good wine.』

(Fantastic&Funny)
『Very informative&fun! Mark Phillips delivers a tremendous amount of great wine facts&ideas in a hilarious way. I love this DVD!

『Enjoying Wine with Mark Phillips aired on over 314 PBS stations in March 2006 which shattered all records making it one of the most watched wine shows in American television. Phillips was asked to do the show because of his irreverant, humorous and entertaining approach to wine. The 60 minute special is available for you to watch and covers topis such as: How To Taste Wine; What Wines Go Best With Food; The One Ingredient That Makes Every Wine and Food Combo Work; How To Store, Save and Serve Wine; What To Do With the Cork When the Waiter Gives It To You; When To Send Back the Wine; When to Microwave Wine; When to Freeze Wine; Putting Wine in Tupperware, and much more.』

(FATAL........FOR YOUR POCKET!!!)
『This was one of the worst movies I'v ever bought through amazon. Low budgeted and BOOOORING.』

(BAD MOVIE)
『THE GIRL IN THE MOVIE WAS CUTE.. THE ACTING SUCKED AND THE STORY LINE WAS TERRIBLE.. AND THERES A 2ND MOVIE.. I THINK I WILL SAVE MY MONEY』

(Bad sign when the make up is better than the movie!!!!!)
『Ok, this movie....horribly boring! Death scenes are not exciting or gory! The make-up on the face of the "clown" was the only cool thing. What was he trying to be, a clown who escaped from a male strip club? For god's sakes, why shirtless? AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!』

(Love this movie!!)
『I almost feel as if I have to apologize for giving this movie 5 stars. Clowns are one of my biggest fears, and when I saw this on the shelf I had to rent it. I loved it! It scared me silly, when so many horror movies recently have barely made me cringe. Yes, it's a B or idependant film, and some of the characters, especially Lynn, I would have like more in depth character development. But come on! This is a crazy clown who stalks and murders with an axe! I bought this movie and have watched it several times, and I can't wait to watch part 2 when it's released.』

(The Worst Movie I've Seen This Year!!!)
『It deserves ZERO stars! This thing was hyped to death and like most horror fans I anticipated the release of Fear of Clowns. Okay, I know B-movies can be fun, like Killer Klowns from Outer Space. But that movie was supposed to be silly. This film was trying to be scary!! What??!! I'm all for laughs with a good cheesy horror flick on a weekend but you have to draw the line somewhere. This was a waste of my time as well as the director and the dreadful actors. I hope I never see those people again in anything! I thought Shivers had potential but the whole concept was totally wasted. The storyline didn't make a lick of sense and nothing was believable or frightening at all. And how about that technicolor blood? I thought we've outgrown that since the 60's and 70's! There is nothing fun or scary about this piece of crap whatsoever, and it totally mocks what indie horror should be. Either you're a spoof or you're not. Make up your mind before you make it people! This is a huge let down! I dozed several times during it and prayed for it all to be over. Please ignore this when you stop by the video store. The case and all of it's 4 star ratings are deceiving. Fear of Clowns is nothing to be afraid of.』

(Don't be fooled)
『I can't figure out how Rudy has gotten the mileage he's gotten. I've watched many of his videos (heck, at some point, you've seen everything else), and I have found him to be consistently, extraordinarily, shallow in his research and understanding of his subject countries and locales. Please understand, I say that in the context of knowing many of his destinations, in some cases quite well.

If you want a light, fluffy, skim of the region, Rudy is your man -- he never covers anything that you wouldn't know about if you gave nine minutes to absent-mindledly flipping through a competent guidebook... and in the same depth. Think of Rudy as a tour bus, passing through at twenty miles an hour, giving you a glimpse, but never quite stopping to let you smell the roses. Or the horse manure. Lite, cheerful, sanitized, smooth, and lo-cal.

For a basic introduction to a country or region, Rick Steves is a better resource, whether or not you are seeking bargain travel -- look especially to Rick for help with building and prioritizing a trip around available time, and for help finding nice little spots the big books may overlook. If you want more than Rick offers, you'll have to start working your way through more serious volumes. Rudy ain't it.

On a positive note, the pictures aren't ugly. If your library has nothing else, and if you've seen everything else on Netflix, you probably won't regret the money invested, unless you've already been to the destination, in which case you may well be asking, "Why, Rudy, why? It would have been so easy to do a much better job."』

(Enchanted Italy)
『While a bit dated, these segments on travel in Italy with Rudy Maxa are enjoyable. The selection of sites is a bit limited, although Mr. Maxa does tend to cover a lot of territory in a short time. His visit to the Chique Terre was brief and focused on the villages, so those interested in the beautiful walking trail between the villages will be disappointed. The "extras" included are very brief and provide little additional information, so if you are a regular viewer of Rudy Maxa's public television series, you will find nothing new here. His discussion of air travel consolidators is good and, if you are interested in this topic, may be worth the purchase of the DVD.』
『Rudy Maxa is public radio’s original Savvy Traveler and host of the American Public Television series, Smart Travels. (Attn: Basic cable viewers)
『I liked this movie, but I had never seen it on HBO so I didn't know how much sex there really was in the city. If you like the series on basic cable and you're an adult, go for it, but be prepared for some soft core porn.』

(Bummer in the City)
『Having enjoyed the television series, I was afraid, from all the hype, that the movie would be a big disappointment. Well, I couldn't have been more right. The thing that makes the TV series work is that the friendship among the women is stronger than anything else; all the superficial stuff is just icing. In the movie, the strongest thing is the massive assault of designer label product placement; it's all superficial stuff and nothing else. It's like one long, annoying commercial. And by the way, the movie is all Carrie all the time; Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha -- far more interesting characters -- have almost nothing to do. The men are beyond an afterthought. The movie is also bizarrely, gratuitously crass. I almost walked out of the theatre. Beyond a dud, this movie is offensive to human intelligence. I hear they're making another.... yikes.』

(The more things change the more they stay the same)
『I finally watched this movie as a rental and liked it surprisingly better than I expected.

I liked it enough to buy it used from Blockbuster for $10, if that says anything...

It's long. And parts of it are a little corny, but the kind of corny that serious fans of the show will be able to overlook without a second thought. It seemed to me that a few of the actors have had some face work done. It looks tacky but when they're dressed like a million bucks, who really cares.

Girlfriends who drop their lives on a moment's notice to fly with you to Mexico don't really exist, and wouldn't we all love to live like Samantha Jones and have the freedom to jet back and forth every other weekend from LA to NYC?? But see, that's the point. You gotta watch the movie knowing it's all about fun and not much about reality.

In the end I guess that's why it's so darn satisfying...
and keeps us always wanting for more.
At the very least, my Carrie craving has been satiated for at least another two years... when they finally come out with another sequel!』

(I want more Sex and The City)
『Just a little consumers point of view about this movie: Everyone was dying to know what happened to Big and Carrie, how was life for Miranda after her moving, what went on with Samantha and her relationship that was really lasting and, of course, what happended to our beloved well educated Charlotte.

I believe the end of this series left a void for women, women who where finally seeing their inner voices speaking back at them from the TV set. It was amazing how friends gather around to do what a lot of people called the Sex and City therapy sessions. Everything was there: 4 women daring to speak on behalf of millions and giving men a clue on what's really going on inside a woman's head when it comes to sex.

You must purchase this movie or your collection wont be complete!!!!』

(Fun as usual)
『The SITC movie was vintage; good to see the girls again and the next generation. If you are not a fan, don't get it; if you are, you will find it is as good as a long running TV show.』

(English translation makes it comfortable for new learners.)
『This DVD was colorful and slow-moving. It was great for me, an adult who knows not-a-word in Chinese. My son, 3-years-old, could have used a faster pace. With English translation, it was a non-threatening way to learn four colors: red, green, blue and yellow; four animals: dog, cat, duck and rabbit; and a handful of useful phrases. New words were repeated often and clearly. And, for the adults, I loved the section at the end which gave the phonetic spelling for the Chinese words and phrases.』

(A wonderful series -- great for all families)
『I love that this video series features children of all ages and many ethnicities -- so welcome in our bi-racial household. My kids love repeating after Bao Bei and friends. This DVD series makes my kids WANT to learn more Chinese and encourages my kids to use the vocabulary they learn here. We can't decide which DVD we like best in the series (you can watch them in any order), so our family recommends you get them all.』

(Love these videos!)
『I am a Chinese American while my husband is Caucasian. Although we speak English at home, we really want our daughters to be able to speak Mandarin as well. The Bao Bei videos have been great and definitely a hit in our home. My almost 3 year old is always asking to watch Bao Bei and my 10 month old is fascinated by the colors and characters in the videos.

What's most fascinating is that my almost 3 year old now can name all the colors as well as count in Mandarin. If you are a parent and want your kids exposed to and learn Mandarin Chinese, definitely get all the Bao Bei video series!』

(my son loved this)
『My almost 3 year old son loves this dvd and requests to watch it quite a lot. we've only had it a month but he's already pick up quite a lot of the vocab. i think it would be more helpful if the pronunciation vocab at the end was put at the bottom of the screen or after each word rather than right at the end so that a connection can be made between the spoken and written aspect of the language - which is why I've only given 4/5.』

(Just perfect for preschoolers -- perfect intro to Chinese!)
『This DVD is fun and not overwhelming for my two-year-old and my four-year-old. Bao Bei definitely captures their attention (and affection!!) and inspires my children to repeat words and phrases in Chinese. I think that this is a perfect introductory series for English-speaking children. I have tried other DVDs, which had WAY too much information for kids and were too much like drills. The kids in this video are multi-ethnic and of various ages, which I really appreciate. My kids adore Bao Bei and her cricket friend. The quality of this series is tops!』
『This DVD will provide your preschool-age children an entertaining introduction to Mandarin Chinese. Your children will love Bao Bei the panda puppet, and Chu Chu the cricket, while they teach and entertain! The DVD utilizes common words, phrases, and greetings that provide children with a linguistic foundation that they can actually use conversationally in everyday life. The stimulating visuals and captivating sounds keep children coming back for more!

Mandarin Chinese is the language to learn in the 21st Century. Experts agree that preschool-age language learning promotes life-long ease with second languages. Your preschooler is a terrific learner, with amazing energy and eagerness to learn new things. Optimize this opportunity by providing a wonderful introduction of a foreign language that will give your preschooler an edge in the future.

The DVD is approximately 30 minutes long. There is a list of the Chinese words and phrases at the end of the DVD in ping ying.』

(Attack of the Killer Lotion)
『Long before Bela Lugosi's career was destroyed by the wondrously incompetent Ed Wood, the actor previewed things to come with his performance in another B-movie classic, The Devil Bat. Notable today for being so campy you should only watch it from a tent, The Devil Bat tells us the grim tale of a bitter scientist who seeks revenge on his enemies by training killer bats to strike those using a unique shaving cream. Truly, the heat and soul of a good-bad movie is an immersive and believable plot...

Now a part of Legend Film's Cult&Horror Classics Collection, The Devil Bat's contribution to the cinematic canon is being preserved for future generations in fully digital DVD form. And, as with all classic Legend releases, the DVD contains two versions of the film: a newly colorized version and the original black and white version. You're free to select which you'd rather watch, but if you haven't yet seen everyone's favorite movie monster in full color, I highly recommend you do so. At least in my case, color connects the audience more closely to the events on-screen, and honestly makes it difficult to determine that the film is nearly seventy years old. Plus, for fans of Lugosi, it adds a certain human element to his performance that is otherwise absent in a bland grayscale.

So pitch your tent and "camp" out with me!』

(You will do it! Or Dr.Shooveocker I will put a evil course upon you....)
『The Devil Bat is a great Bela outing. Of course its no DRACULA or MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE but its hard not to get a kick out of this grade Z P.R.C opus about a MAD DOCTOR who develops a breed of giant bat he attracts to his enemies with a special after-shave he advises users to rub"on the tender part of your neck." Loads of cheap fun, with cardboard sets and pathetic special effects;Bela seems to be having a ball and so should you! For those of you who love remakes and sequels(???)see The Flying Serpent and Devil Bat's Daughter』
『Bela Lugosi is a well-meaning scientist, driven mad by his greedy bosses. He seeks his revenge in the only way he knows how: by breeding a race of Devil Bats to do his sinister bidding!  The town's only hope is an intrepid reporter who must investigate the deaths and determine what, if any, connection they have to a mysterious new type of aftershave that's been seen around town...The Devil Bat rivals Lugosi's work withEd Wood for campy 50's chills and will have you thinking twice before your next shave!』

『MARIO MORENO REYES "Cantinflas" (August 12, 1911 - April 20, 1993) was a comedian of the Mexican theatre and Film industry. His interpretation of Cantinflas, a character originating in the pelado, the impoverished campesino-cum slumdeweller that came to represent the national identity of Mexico, earned him popularity with the common people that he was able to parlay into a long, successful film career that included a foray into Hollywood. Charlie Chaplin once called him "the greatest comedian in the world," and he is often referred to as the "Charlie Chaplin of Mexico". While some of his films were dubbed into English for American audiences, and his work found some favor among the people of France, the wordplay of his Spanish-language humor did not translate particularly well into other languages. However, he was wildly successful in Spanish-speaking Latin America , where he still has many devoted fans. GERMAN VALDES (September 19, 1915 - June 29, 1973), better known as "Tin-Tan", was a Mexican actor, singer and comedian. He often displayed the pachuco dress and employed pachuco slang in many of his movies, some with his brothers Manuel "El Loco" Valdez and Ramon Valdez. He made the language of the Mexican American Pachucos famous in Mexico. A "calo" based in Spanglish, it was a mixture of Spanish and English in speech based on that of Mexican immigrants. He usually acted with his "Carnal" (sidekick), Marcelo Chavez, who also accompanied Tin Tan with a guitar. He was a very important figure during his golden years of movie making, from 1949. His 1953 movie,CALABACITAS TIERNAS, a comedy, was chosen as one of the best in Mexican cinema. He has the record of having kissed the most actresses in his career, some of them the beauties of their day. Some of his co-stars were Marga Lopez and Rosita Quintana. He was also one of several people who were originally intended to be on the front cover of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper Lonely Heart Club Band but he was ultimately excluded. He requested that Ringo swap him for a Mexican Tree, and he did.』
