(Fun, Smart, and Cleverly-Written Romantic Comedy)
『This was a real surprise to me. Since Miss Pettigrew (Frances McDormand) was supposed to be a nanny, I thought this was going to be a kid-focused movie. Luckily for me, it's anything but. If you enjoy clever wordplay and old-fashioned, slightly complex, drawing room-style comedies, you'll get a kick out of Miss Pettigrew and the host of characters she runs into. (If you like beautiful young people in various states of dress, you'll also get a kick out of Amy Adams and her consorts, as well as a 1940s lingerie fashion show.)

It's nothing deep, but lots of fun. Wonderfully cast, well acted, and deviously humorous, this is an hour-and-a-half well spent, yet you'll spend MUCH less out of pocket than you would at the movie theatre. Highly recommended.』

(A Sweet, Lazy Afternoon Charmer)
『MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY is a sweet, appealing way to spend a lazy afternoon. Set in London at the onset of WWII, MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY tells the story of two very different women whose paths cross briefly, making a huge impact in each other lives. This film leaves you feeling happy, with a big smile on your face.

Amy Adams and Frances McDormand are perfect foils for each other. Amy Adams plays the young, carefree, morally questionable, gorgeous young starlet (Delysia Lafosse); Frances McDormand is the plain, unassuming daughter of a clergyman, who makes a rather unsuccessful living as a governess (Miss Pettigrew). Miss Pettigrew has just been fired from another job, and Delysia finds herself in multiple romantic entanglements. The two women find each other, and each makes a big difference in the life of the other. Delysia Lafosse learns what she wants most in her heart, and Miss Pettigrew learns to live. In the end, both get everything that they deserve.

The performances from the entire cast are very pleasing, each person playing their somewhat stereotypical characters to a tee. The costuming is perfect for the period and simply lovely; I really enjoyed all the clothes in this one. The cinematography is muted and soft, working very nicely for the time period portrayed. Overall, this is a very well done film.

A cross between Cinderella and Pygmalion, MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY is a thoroughly enjoyable film, a charmer for the whole family. A real life fairy tale that leaves you contented and satisfied, everyone lives happily ever after. Which is exactly what you want.

(Beyond boring)
『I actually saw this in the movie theater and wanted my money back. The plot was totally unbelievable. The pretty woman in one of the leads was annoying and trying unsuccessfully to channel Marilyn Monroe and it was not at all convincing that the main character, Mrs. Perrigrew, a very plain and boring woman, would attract any male attention the way she did in the movie. It was just all silly and rediculous.』

(A frothy concoction...but well worth a look.)
『Over the years I've seen many film reviews that will label something as "frothy" or even a "frothy confection." This description never really spoke to me...but the other day, I watched MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY, and nothing could describe it better than a "frothy confection."

It's frothy because it's almost lighter than air. A lot of energy went into whipping it into something substantial...but the slightest pressure will deflate the integrity. It's a concoction because it is almost unrelentingly sweet and pretty much of no nutritional value.

This isn't to say it isn't fun to consume...because it certainly is.

Miss Pettigrew (Frances McDormand) is a dowdy, straight-laced nanny who has been fired from yet another job because she actually seems to insist on disciplining the children, and perhaps isn't a very good people person. It's the dawn of WWII in London, and there is simply no work to be found. In fact, she's trying to dig food out of the garbage, and is reduced to eating a soup kitchen, and she has lost all of her clothes except the old, brown items she's wearing. By "stealing" a job from her agency, she shows up at the door to a glamorous apartment, whose resident, Delycia (Amy Adams) is looking for a social secretary...a job Miss Pettigrew is not cut out for. Or so it would seem.

Delycia, however, is in the midst of a conundrum. She has one man upstairs in her bedroom (he's a theater producer, and Delycia wants to star in his next show...no matter the cost), but she needs to get rid of him, because the man who owns the apartment she's staying in is about to come over. Miss Pettigrew, almost despite her distaste for the situation, manages to extract Delysia from trouble, and Delysia takes an instant liking for her new "friend."

The movie essentially follows roughly a 24 hour period, in which we meet Delysia's several boyfriends, see the two new acquaintances head to a swanky lunch, pick out some new clothes for Miss Pettigrew, attend a fashion show, host a party and visit a nightclub. Everywhere they go, they meet the same little circle of socialites...a bunch of backstabbers, for the most part.

The movie mostly revolves around Delysia's need to decide which man is right for her (we know almost from the beginning, so mostly we're watching to see how Delysia gets there)...and even more enjoyably, watching Miss Pettigrew emerge from her shell and take some first, delicate steps towards truly reconnecting with mankind. The two women are just what the other needs to kick their lives forward. Not one moment of the film is truly surprising, and while there is plenty of sniping and scheming...no one is really an irredeemable villain.

While the film is not intellectually stimulating, it has lots going for it anyway. First of all, the costumes and sets are fabulous. The designers must have had the best time recreating the highest possible fashion of the time. (Pay special attention to Delysia's bedroom...it is a marvel.) I found myself literally grinning just looking at the movie.

And the performances are delightful. Amy Adams can't seem to fail to be charming. In ENCHANTED, she was warm, funny and irresistible. In MISS PETTIGREW...she's bubbly and full of life, but she's also neurotic and a bit of a floozy. Yet by the end, she's won us over. McDormand continues to do no wrong (in my book). What I like about her is that she can make herself appear plain, middle-aged bordering on elderly, dowdy, severe and humorless...and then in the twinkling of an eye, she drops 10-15 years, is radiant, intelligent and full of humorous mischief. The real fun of this film is watching her very subtle transformation.

I want to give special "shout outs" to Ciaran Hinds as the stuffy, reserved fashion designer who is intrigued by Miss Pettigrew, and to Shirley Henderson as the conniving Edythe. Hinds is just a amazingly commanding screen presence (I'm thinking of his imperious Julius Caesar in ROME), but here he shows his romantic side to really nice effect. Henderson is best known as Moaning Myrtle in the HARRY POTTER films...but here she is far from playing a teenager. Her distinctive voice serves her well in this juicy little role.

MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY is the kind of film you won't remember for long...but it was so delightful during its running time, and left me feeling good for awhile after its conclusion. Honestly, not many movies can even live up to that modest but admirable level.』

(What a delight!)
『This movie is just a breath of fresh air! A feel-good, rags-to-riches romantic comedy - the best kind in my opinion! Fantastic cast, fantastic plot, fantastic love story! Great music, great setting, great costumes, great humor! The story is just too sweet! True love can find you at any age and when you least expect it, and this movie is proof that one person can change your whole life for the better in just one day! Highly recommended!』
『Academy Award® nominee Amy Adams (Enchanted) and Academy Award® winner Frances McDormand star in this charming comedy about finding a new life and a new love, all in one day. When Miss Pettigrew (McDormand) stumbles upon the chance to become the new "social secretary" to glamorous high-society singer and actress Delysia Lafosse (Adams), she seizes the opportunity despite being totally out of her element. Swept up into the glamorous whirl of high society, it’s all Miss Pettigrew can do to keep up with Delysia as she juggles her lovelife and career in this “delightful champagne cocktail of a comedy!”(Leah Rozen, People).』
『Based on a 1938 Winifred Watson novel,Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Dayis a colorful story about lives stalled in middle age but kick-started again by the follies of youthful lovers all around. Frances McDormand stars as Miss Pettigrew, whose inability to hold a job in London as a governess compromises her well-being shortly before England’s entry in World War II. Finessing her way into a position as social secretary to a young, American golddigger and singer named Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams), the starving Miss Pettigrew finds herself at the center of a whirlwind that is her new employer’s life. Hemmed in by lovers and suitors--including a young, theatrical producer (Tom Payne) looking to cast one of his pleasing girlfriends in a plum role; a creepy nightclub owner (Mark Strong) in whose flat Delysia lives; and a pianist (Lee Pace) who genuinely loves her--Delysia needs a map to figure out how to navigate through life. MissPettigrew, who suffered a loss during WWI that she does not speak of, nudges the naïve songstress toward wise decisions. But she is at the mercy of Delysia’s formidable friend (Shirley Henderson), who knows the truth about her impoverished state and is engaged to a much older man (Ciarán Hinds). The latter, a fellow of substance who seems to be meandering through life, falls instantly for the soulful Miss Pettigrew. Full of Art Deco trappings and paced with a vintage, screwball comedy energy,Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Dayis like watching a contemporary version of a Hollywood classic. --Tom Keogh

(HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2 (BLU RAY))
『MY WHOLE FAMILY REALLY ENJOY THIS MUSICAL SHOW ON BLU RAY. PICTURE QUALITY IS SHARP WITH AUDIO IN PCM. GOOD ACTING FROM ASHLEY TISDALE AS SHARPAY.』

(Go High School Musical!)
『This movie was good. Although I must admit, like many sequels, it was not as good as the first. More things are unrealistic in this second movie. However it is still a sweet, fun, clean, entertaining movie. For best results, you really need to watch the first one first!』

(HSM 2)
『This movie hasn't left the player since it arrived. My daughter is obssessed, and, unfortunateley, I find these songs stuck in my head all day and night. Beware Disney's mind control!』

(Musical lover)
『This series of musicals just exceed my expectation. I thought they'll be lame, but they are excellent! Great music and choreography, strongly recommanded.』

(A fun movie)
『The Wildcats are back! In the sequel to the hit Disney Channel Original movie that aired in 2006, taking the world by storm, High School Musical 2 stars all of your favorites. Only this one is about their summer.
The Wildcats get summer jobs at the Evan's family's country club. Sharpay Evans family's that is. And of course where there is Sharpay, there is trouble. While the number one thing on everyone else's "To Do List" is "Have Fun", the number one thing on Sharpay's is "Take Troy from Gabriella." And that's exactly what she tries to do. But will it work?
This sequel is full of great music, just like the first movie. From ballads like Gotta Go My Own Way, to upbeat party songs like the grand finale, "All For One."
Is this movie better than the first? I don't think so. But, is it a fun, family movie that will definitely get everyone dancing and singing along? I would say yes.』

『Schools out and Troy, his teammates, and Gabrielle all get jobs at a country club for the summer. Sharpay s father runs the club so she is used to getting her way around there. Sharpay is determined to win the club s summer talent show, an event she has dominated for the last six years. She thinks getting Troy to perform with her will cinch the win, so she dumps Ryan as her partner and schemes to get Troy away from Gabriella so she can perform with him.』
『What time is it? Time forHigh School Musical 2, the sequel to the Disney Channel smash that aired on Aug. 17, 2007 and became the most-watched basic-cable show ever. School is out, and Troy (Zac Efron) and Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens) are looking forward to a summer to remember, but Troy also needs to make bank so he can go to college. As it turns out, Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale), the self-proclaimed primo girl of East High, has her eye set on primo-boy Troy, and gets him a job at the country club her parents own. It looks great for Troy when Gabriella and the rest of the Wildcats are hired also, but when he gets preferential treatment from the club manager (Mark Taylor) and others, it puts all of his relationships in hot water.

Everyone's back from the original movie, including Zac's buddy Chad (Corbin Bleu), Sharpay's brother Ryan (Lucas Grabeel), and Gabriella's friend Taylor (Monique Coleman). And the songs on the hit soundtrack often parallel the originals and are just as catchy: the Troy-Gabriella duet ("You Are the Music in Me," which is later Sharpay-ized into a rock version), the sports-flavored hip-hop number ("I Don't Dance," but this time on the baseball diamond instead of the basketball court), the Gabriella lament ("Gotta Go My Own Way"), the climactic stage duet ("Everyday"), and the mass-ensemble closer ("All for One"). But the sequel doesn't just stick to the status quo. Other songs include a flashy opener ("What Time Is It"), Sharpay's poolside feature ("Fabulous"), a percussive ensemble number ("Work This Out"), and Zac's solo ("Bet On It"), and the dances are even bigger this time around, relentlessly high-energy and often spectacular. In addition, the "let's put on a show" angle ! is only a subplot and the romance is now front and center--which meansHigh School Musicalhas lost a bit of its innocence. But it's still wholesome viewing for tweens of all ages. Sharp-eyed Disney Channel fans will spot Miley "Hannah Montana" Cyrus as an extra.--David Horiuchi

On the DVD
The extended-edition DVD adds one new scene, in which Sharpay and Ryan perform the Hawaiian-themed "Humuhumunukunukuapua'a," which not only is fun but adds a bit of character development for Ryan. This number (which was on the CD as a bonus track) is incorporated into the movie and also accessible from the bonus-features menu, along with a four-minute blooper reel and music videos for "You Are the Music in Me" (one U.S. version and a Mexican version with Paulina Holguin and Roger) and "Gotta Go My Own Way (Canadian versions in French and English, both with Nikki Yanofsky). A "dance rehearsal cam" shows the choreographers and cast working on nine numbers (36 minutes total). Director-choreographer Kenny Ortega coaches, offers pep talk, and declares, "If it wasn't for Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon, we wouldn'tbehere!" There are two sing-along options, one with English subtitles and a "karaoke" version with English subtitles but no vocals.--David Horiuchi

(The Princess Bride: Not Horrible, but not good either.)
『Let me say this first and foremost, my boyfriend told me about this movie while walking to the library one day. At first, I told him I didn't want to see it, but he insisted that I should give it a try and afterwards tell him how I felt about it. So, I said O.K. and borrowed it for the weekend. And there I was, sitting in the living room with my boyfriend, watching the Princess Bride. Robin Wright plays the serious, deadpan Princess Buttercup, Cary Elwes plays the poor, lame, non-acting farmer/pirate character, Westley, Chris Sarandon plays the very cruel and very pathetic prince Humperdink, and Billy Crystal plays the lovable Miracle Max. Now, I was very Surprised to see the late Andre the Giant in this film, he did a very good job being that this was his 1st movie debut. He made me laugh and that really helped. I'll miss him, we all will. Still, I couldn't shake the fact that something was bugging me through the film, It was Cary's character Westley. Not only did his acting sucked (like it always did.) But there was an issue about his legs. They looked like they've been traded for woman's legs! (the black, tight pants gave it away, sorry.) Of course he had so much love for Buttercup, but that couldn't even make it up due to Westley's corny lines. Cary, go in the kitchen and make yourself a Ham Sandwich, ya killing me! Anyway, Robin Wright's Buttercup character was another thing that was bugging me. Why would a princess be so serious and deadpan all the time? She only smiled when she wanted to. Really, is that the princess way of life? NO WAY! They made a cute couple for the time being. Going on, Chris Sarandon's character, Humperdink. His performance needed some work. He was so snobbish, so arrogant, so high-and-mighty and very cruel that he litterally made me sick. I had to mumble under my breath that he was alot better in the "CHILD'S PLAY" movie. Yes, he bugged me also. Everybody else's performances were okay. Swordfights, honor, true love, bravery and triumph were the only morals that I recognised. There's nothing wrong with that. Andre's character was funny and lovable, Billy Crystal's character was funny as much as he wanted to be. He needed more scenes though. Oh, and the music in the background, I loved it. It sounds so beautiful, it should be on the soundtrack. My boyfriend didn't like the movie either. This movie is DEFINITLY for the kids. I'm just grateful that I watched it only once. And what's with that punk villian with the 6 fingers? Doesn't he realize that he could get away making Humperdink angry because of the 6 finger income? (I hope I said it right.) Anyway, I leave this movie towards the likes of my brother and sister. They'll probably like it. Bye, I've said enough.』

(True Love and High Adventure in the Land of Florin)
『Screenwriter and novelist William Goldman's book, The Princess Bride, was first published in 1972. For years Goldman, who wrote the screenplay for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, attempted to have a film adaptation made, but every time an unforeseeable obstacle prevented this from happening. Then in 1985, Rob Reiner, director of This Is Spinal Tap and Stand By Me, began work on the now classic film. Though the film wasn't a Box Office smash, this can be blamed on 20th Century Fox's poor marketing campaign, it has since become a classic and has often been imitated by other lesser films seeking to capitalize on the film's success. However, there can only ever be one film like The Princess Bride.

When a ten- year-old boy is sick and forced to stay home in bed, his grandfather comes to visit, bringing him a special present. When the boy unwraps the package, he is disappointed to find only a book. But his grandfather explains that The Princess Bride is no ordinary book. It's a book that has been in the family for many years, read by one member of a generation to the next. As for the story contained within the book, it tells an exciting tale of "fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles."
"It doesn't sound too bad. I'll try and stay awake," the boy replies.
Along time ago, in the land of Florin... a handsome farm boy and beautiful peasant girl, Westley and Buttercup, fall madly in love. But Westley can't afford to marry Buttercup, so he goes to sea to seek his fortune. While he's away, Buttercup hears rumor that his ship was attacked by the Dread pirate Roberts, who never left captives alive. Buttercup was left heartbroken and so five years passed. Prince Humperdinck, who by law has the right to choose his bride, takes Buttercup to be his wife. Before they can be married, Buttercup is kidnapped by a trio of strange mercenaries: Vizzini, a supposed mastermind, Fezzik, a gentle giant, and Inigo Montoya, a Spanish swordsman. On their voyage to the neighboring land of Guilder, where they intend to start a war, they discover that they are being followed by a dashing and mysterious masked man. One by one, the masked man defeats the three mercenaries and escapes with Princess Buttercup, just as they are being pursued by Prince Humperdinck and Count Rugen. The masked man reveals himself to be Westley, and then he and Buttercup seek shelter in the deadly Fire Swamp. After surviving the many dangers of the Fire Swamp, including Rodents of Unusual Size (or ROUSes), they are both captured by the prince and his soldiers. Buttercup is taken back to the castle to marry Humperdinck and Westley is taken to the Pit of Despair, where he is to be tortured by Count Rugen, but after a series of unexpected incidents everyone (well, almost everyone) lives happily ever after.

The film features an amazing cast including Cary Elwes as Westley, Mandy Patinkin as Inigo Montoya, Chris Sarandon as Prince Humperdinck, Christopher Guest as Count Rugen, Wallace Shawn as Vizzini, Andre the Giant as Fezzik, Fred Savage as The Grandson, and in her first major film role, Robin Wright as Princess Buttercup. The supporting cast includes such great actors as Peter Falk, who plays The Grandfather as well as narrates, Peter Cook, Mel Smith, Carol Kane, and Billy Crystal. Every single member of the cast gives a pitch-perfect performance.
The Princess Bride also features some of the most memorable lines of dialogue in recent movie history, as well as some truly iconic scenes. The film is hard to categorize as any single genre. It's equal parts romance, adventure, fantasy, comedy, satire, and fairy tale. Though it only did modestly at the Box office when it was released in 1987, the film found its largest audiences through the home video market, and is now considered a classic (as it should be).』

(As you wish)
『You got a evil prince who wants war with a neighboring kingdom. A pirate chasing after his true love. A giant, and a swordsman built on revenge with the classic fantasy story of good vs evil. You will find this fantasy movie to be in the vein of Willow, Legend, Labyrinth, the 10th kingdom, The never ending story.
Its a pretty good movie but from a guys point of view there was too much "true love" nagging on your emotions and not enough action/fight sequences. But then again since this was filmed in the 80s I guess newer viewers might be jaded by all of Hollywood's special effects.

(The Princess Bride - More than just a fairy tale)
『This classic movie brings viewers of all ages back to a time when movie making and storytelling were one in the same. No special effects were needed, just good acting and a great story line.

I highly recommend this movie!』

(Fun movie, fun book)
『This movie was my first introduction to the story of The Princess Bride and for years I loved watching it. This movie is seriously a hit for all ages. It keeps young children interested and gives the adults jokes to laugh at. The comedy with sarcastic undertones, the simplicity of good vs bad, the impossible feats accomplished and of course, the awesome performances from the actors were all players in what makes this movie fun to watch. There is a prince and a princess, bandits, fighting, magic, and love. All under two hours. And yet for all the times I've watched this film, I never knew about the book by William Goldstein. Folks, this is one good read. The humor is more prominent than what you pick up on from the movie and it gives you background info on characters like Fezzik and Indigo. While it is much more encompassing than the movie, the movie stays true to the book which is another reason to like it. I would recommend both movie and book to those looking for a fun plot to follow.』
『From celebrated director Rob Reiner (When Harry Met Sally) and OscarÂ(r)-winning* screenwriter William Goldman (Chaplin) comes "an enchanting fantasy" (Time) filled with adventure, romance and plenty of "good-hearted fun" (Roger Ebert)! Featuring a spectacular cast thatincludes Robin Wright (Forrest Gump), Cary Elwes (Liar, Liar), Mandy Patinkin (Dick Tracy) and Billy Crystal (City Slickers), this wonderful fairy tale about a Princess named Buttercup and her beloved is "a real dream of a movie" (People)! *1969: OriginalScreenplay, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 1976: Adapted Screenplay, All the President's Men』
『Screenwriter William Goldman's novelThe Princess Brideearned its own loyal audience on the strength of its narrative voice and its gently satirical, hyperbolic spin on swashbuckled adventure that seemed almost purely literary. For all its derring-do and vivid over-the-top characters, the book's joy was dictated as much by the deadpan tone of its narrator and a winking acknowledgement of the clichés being sent up. Miraculously, director Rob Reiner and Goldman himself managed to visualize this romantic fable while keeping that external voice largely intact: using a storytelling framework, avuncular Grandpa (Peter Falk) gradually seduces his skeptical grandson (Fred Savage) into the absurd, irresistible melodrama of the title story.

And what a story: a lowly stable boy, Westley (Cary Elwes), pledges his love to the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright), only to be abducted and reportedly killed by pirates while Buttercup is betrothed to the evil Prince Humperdinck. Even as Buttercup herself is kidnapped by a giant, a scheming criminal mastermind, and a master Spanish swordsman, a mysterious masked pirate (could it be Westley?) follows in pursuit. As they sail toward the Cliffs of Insanity...

The wild and woolly arcs of the story, the sudden twists of fate, and, above all, the cartoon-scaled characters all work because of Goldman's very funny script, Reiner's confident direction, and a terrific cast. Elwes and Wright, both sporting their best English accents, juggle romantic fervor and physical slapstick effortlessly, while supporting roles boast Mandy Patinkin (the swordsman Inigo Montoya), Wallace Shawn (the incredulous schemer Vizzini), and Christopher Guest (evil Count Rugen) with brief but funny cameos from Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, and Peter Cook.--Sam Sutherland

(Joseph's story in claymation)
『This is a 30-minute animated film of the biblical story of Joseph. The clay animation is nicely done, and the writers did a good job with the condensation and adaptation of the biblical text--capturing the most important parts of the story and sticking relatively closely to the biblical account.

I couldn't help noticing, though, that Joseph and his youngest brother, Benjamin, were given the fairest skin and the smallest, straightest noses of the twelve brothers. That is, the two "good" brothers look much less Semitic than the "bad" brothers who sold Joseph into slavery. Because of this, I hesitate to recommend this film for children. But I've used it in college and high school religion courses and simply drew students' attention to this issue.

I also have the film "Ruth" that's part of this series, and I think it's excellent.』

(Great Looking Bible Story in Claymation Style! Scripturally Accurate! Fun!)
『If you are a Christian who likes the classic Christmas claymation TV specials like RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER, or even better, LITTLE DRUMMER BOY, then you will be quite pleased with this DVD! It looks like the same style, done with a little more detail and skill, and it is very accurate to the Bible!

This is a great little DVD, made by the BBC in the 1990s. Actually, this company made three of these Bible stories, and they are all worth owning, especially at this low amazon.com price. The other two are RUTH and ABRAHAM. Search the amazon.com DVDs with the words TESTAMENT, BIBLE and then either RUTH, ABRAHAM, or JOSEPH.

This company also made about 7 cartoon, drawn animation Bible DVDs, which are also virtually all very good, but these claymation ones are truly priceless for any Christian Bible story lovers and/or their kids!』

『MARIO MORENO REYES "Cantinflas" (August 12, 1911 - April 20, 1993) was a comedian of the Mexican theatre and Film industry. His interpretation of Cantinflas, a character originating in the pelado, the impoverished campesino-cum slumdeweller that came to represent the national identity of Mexico, earned him popularity with the common people that he was able to parlay into a long, successful film career that included a foray into Hollywood. Charlie Chaplin once called him "the greatest comedian in the world," and he is often referred to as the "Charlie Chaplin of Mexico". While some of his films were dubbed into English for American audiences, and his work found some favor among the people of France, the wordplay of his Spanish-language humor did not translate particularly well into other languages. However, he was wildly successful in Spanish-speaking Latin America , where he still has many devoted fans. GERMAN VALDES (September 19, 1915 - June 29, 1973), better known as "Tin-Tan", was a Mexican actor, singer and comedian. He often displayed the pachuco dress and employed pachuco slang in many of his movies, some with his brothers Manuel "El Loco" Valdez and Ramon Valdez. He made the language of the Mexican American Pachucos famous in Mexico. A "calo" based in Spanglish, it was a mixture of Spanish and English in speech based on that of Mexican immigrants. He usually acted with his "Carnal" (sidekick), Marcelo Chavez, who also accompanied Tin Tan with a guitar. He was a very important figure during his golden years of movie making, from 1949. His 1953 movie,CALABACITAS TIERNAS, a comedy, was chosen as one of the best in Mexican cinema. He has the record of having kissed the most actresses in his career, some of them the beauties of their day. Some of his co-stars were Marga Lopez and Rosita Quintana. He was also one of several people who were originally intended to be on the front cover of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper Lonely Heart Club Band but he was ultimately excluded. He requested that Ringo swap him for a Mexican Tree, and he did.』

(Beautiful but repetitive)
『This movie definitely has some excellent cinematography and beautiful landscapes in the scenery, but I found it very boring. It seems that for half of the movie all that is going on is people are walking down the mountain then back up with water, then repeat. The drama unfolds with some slow motion shots of people almost tripping and/or spilling the water. I have to say there are some intriguing moments though. If you must see this movie, I would recommend the box set 'Beautiful Women of China'. For a few dollars more it includes this movie, Ju-Dou, and Life Show. Please note that as in the Ju-Dou individual DVD reviews, the video transfer quality is sub-par for Ju-Dou in the box set as well.』

(Beautiful and poignant)
『This film won:

Best Actress, Shanghai International Film Festival
Best Picture, Best Director, Shanghai Film Critics Award
Silver People's Choice Award, India International Film Festival

This film is a visual poem, just simply beautiful. The story quietly tells the hardships of bringing precious drinking water to a Hunan mountain village. All the villagers---men AND women, have to help, carrying the heavy water through a narrow, rocky pass to this mountain village. The main characters are Ah-ming and A-Shui, they love each other but Ah-ming is forced into an arranged marriage. Ah-ming's wife eventually leaves, and Ah-shui is forced to go the city for a while to find work. The story is told from the point of view of a visitor involved in a difficult dam project to help the village.

(He knows his stuff!)
『I thoroughly savored this DVD. Mark Phillips is DA BOMB!!! Seriously, there's truly nothing snobby about him. He's funny, charming, and doesn't seem to take himself too seriously. I am really a "beer gal," but thanks to Mark I'm exploring new worlds of wine!』

(Great Wine Course)
『We went to Napa Valley and brought along this DVD set and thoroughly enjoyed learning about wine and tasting wine while we were driving through the beautiful vineyards and stopping at some for tastings. Mark Phillips talks about wine in an easy-to-understand fashion and makes it a lot of fun! It was perfect for our trip!』

(Stop Wine - ing!)
『Stop Wine-ing! If you haven't purchased this entertaining, yet most educational DVD, you are definitely missing out. Not only does Mark do a fabulous job "teaching" and sharing his wine tips, it is a great resource to use for a theme party. Living outside the United States, we've "featured" this fun and entertaining DVD at several "representational" events promoting American wines and sharing a delightful side of American culture! The "hands-on" interaction encourages lots of fun and laughter - even amongst the stuffiest of guests. Don't delay, get yours today and stop Wine-ing!』

(Excellent beginners guide to wine)
『Enjoying Wine with Mark Phillips

I thoroughly enjoyed this pbs series by Mark Phillips on wine. Geared towards beginners who want a "sane" approach to enjoying wine. Loved the tip about making ice cubes with wine for use with cooking later on. I hate wasting good wine.』

(Fantastic&Funny)
『Very informative&fun! Mark Phillips delivers a tremendous amount of great wine facts&ideas in a hilarious way. I love this DVD!

『Enjoying Wine with Mark Phillips aired on over 314 PBS stations in March 2006 which shattered all records making it one of the most watched wine shows in American television. Phillips was asked to do the show because of his irreverant, humorous and entertaining approach to wine. The 60 minute special is available for you to watch and covers topis such as: How To Taste Wine; What Wines Go Best With Food; The One Ingredient That Makes Every Wine and Food Combo Work; How To Store, Save and Serve Wine; What To Do With the Cork When the Waiter Gives It To You; When To Send Back the Wine; When to Microwave Wine; When to Freeze Wine; Putting Wine in Tupperware, and much more.』
