Fights weren't as exciting as the first four UFCs, the Gracie-Shamrock "superfight" was a superbore. However, UFC 5 does contain my favorite fight of all time: The SAFTA man vs. the Nude Steakhouse guy!
The show opens with Jon Hess, co-founder of "SAFTA" fighting systems (don't ask) vs. Andy Anderson, owner of the "Totally Nude Steakhouse" chain in Texas (classy places, no doubt). Hess, who claims to be in great shape yet is built like Baby Huey, tosses David Carradine-style martial arts serenity out the window and announces he's there "to break people." Anderson, sporting a huge potgut and a face like the back end of a horse, steps in ready for combat wearing clown pants guaranteed to strike fear into the heart of any opponent. For the next 90 seconds, Hess flails around like a 3rd grader in a playground fight yet still manages to kick the walrus pus out of Anderson, who ends up partially blind in one of his eyes from Hess's gouging. If you're tired of the precision punching and fluid technique of the Chuck Lidells and Nogueiras of the world, this fight is for you...two laughably untalented oafs engaged in a ludicrous techniqueless brawl that ends with Hess soccer kicking Anderson's head into the wall. Priceless. 』
(Stalemate) 『The superfight was a 35 minute fight nobody wanted to see. Ken did a great job of making this one of the worst UFC's. Ken is one of my all time greatest fighters, but if you dont want to fight dont get into the octagon.』
(Terrible Event) 『I've seen almost all of the UFC events, and I assure you that this is one of the worst ones available on DVD. The superfight between Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie did not live up to the hype even in the slightest, and it was mostly just Ken Shamrock laying on top of Royce Gracie in a defensive Jiu-Jitsu posture for about 35 minutes. It was one of the top 3 worst fights I've personally been exposed to in the UFC, and the other fights(with the exception of just a couple) in this event were not that impressive at all. And the main event consisting of Dan Severn winning the championship, also, was not that impressive at all.
I do not recommend spending even 4-5 dollars on this product, and I recommend purchasing UFC 6 instead, which is the debut of "Tank" Abbot.』
(Three future legends, two destinies...one winner.) 『This tournament had a little of everything.
Andy Anderson vs. Jon Hess was a typical UFC opener, i.e. baaaad. Hess uses seemingly every $1,000 infraction in the book and Anderson does little more than take it. Larry Cureton vs. Todd Medina saw two pure standup strikers go to the ground almost immediately. Medina wins via front choke. Next, powerful veteran grappler Oleg Taktarov takes on overmatched Ernest Verdecia...and finds himself at a disadvantage for nearly the entire fight, turning it around only at the very end to win. Clearly, something's not right with him. And the fearsome but still uncrowned Dan Severn grapples with strong Joe Charles and slowly but very surely dominates him. The semifinal has Dave Benetau step in for the, er, unwilling Hess; he eliminates Medina in short order. And in a highly controversial showdown, Taktarov fails to get any effective offense against Severn, who eventually pounds him in the face until John McCarthy calls for a stoppage over Taktarov's protests.
Then it's time for inaugural Superfight, the titanic rematch between Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock (and incredibly the second and last time they'd ever face each other). It would last 36:06, the longest fight in UFC history. This was one for the ages...but not for the reasons everyone thought it would be. And there would be controversy. Would Gracie have gone to his back if he'd known that it'd make him helpless? Could Shamrock have somehow, at some point, gotten more aggressive? In the end, neither would win. But in a sense, perhaps that's appropriate. Why should the sports first megafight have a simple resolution?
And then it's all over but the newest star looking to make it official against Beneteau. To Beneteau's credit he didn't go down easily...for a while. But the same destiny that prevent a winner in the Superfight seemed to be pushing for one here.
In all, it was a true clash of the titans with more than its share of twists and turns. An exciting, entertaining night...but you'd expect no less from MMA.』
(The Return of the Beast and the first Superfight!) 『With ferocity never quite seen before in the relatively short life of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC); wrestler Dan "the Beast" Severn steamrolled thru his first two opponents in UFC IV, placing him in the finals against the most decorated fighter in UFC history. His Greco-Roman skills were put to the test against Royce Gracie in a 15 minute battle. Unfortunately, for Severn the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert was able to secure a triangle choke forcing him to tap out. Fast forward 5 months later to the Independence Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina, where once again Severn would have an opportunity to win the UFC tournament. With experience on his side, he looked to take what he could not in the previous show.
Before UFC V, all UFC's centered on the main tournament. In this format, one fighter, Royce Gracie dominated all but one tournament in route to glory. Fresh off his latest tournament victory in UFC IV, Gracie was now asked to participate in only one fight dubbed the "Superfight". His opponent was a familiar foe, but eager to prove his skills in a rematch against the Brazilian. Ken Shamrock was back and finally got his rematch against Gracie, their bout would be scheduled for 30 minutes with a 5 minute over time period if needed.
The fighters involved in the main draw (tournament) were all for the most part rookies in MMA and the UFC.
Andy Anderson - A veteran of bare knuckle challenge matches who was short, but very bulky.
John Hess - A confident, agile, and serious big man ready to impose his style (SAFTA) on his opponents.
Larry Cureton - Another large fighter, who was a kickboxer.
Todd Medina - A religious man who listed "Jeet Kune Do" as his discipline. He was a big man first and foremost and was ready to win.
Oleg Taktarov - A Russian Sambo expert with experience in amateur competition. He looked on paper as a serious ground fighter.
Ernie Verdicia - The fighting Paramedic who was a Kempo stylist. He looked to use his fast hands to win.
Joe Charles - The "Ghetto Man" was back after a quick UFC IV fight. He was an expert in Judo.
Dan Severn - Decorated wrestler with experience (UFC IV) and redemption on his mind.
Dave Beneteau - Canadian wrestler with fast hands. He was very balanced for a fighter of his era.
The tournament would feature a rather large field of fighters of different disciplines. Still though, it was the fighters that knew how to fight on the ground that would separate themselves from the pack and emerge as threats. In this tournament an alternate would play a big role and a fight would be stopped due to blood. All in all, a good and rather quick tournament solidifying a place in history for the victor.
The first Superfight would be just that: Super. The fight was an epic in terms of time (36:00), but left many asking for more afterwards. While it is hard to pinpoint a specific compelling story arc for this season, that doesn't mean it wasn't filled with the charm, smarts, and rapid-fire dialogue that madeGilmore Girlsone of the brightest shows on television. Stellar supporting turns from Liza Weil as Paris, Rory's friend and nemesis by turns, and a pre-O.C.Adam Brody, as a band member who falls for Rory's best friend Lane (Keiko Agena), also punctuated the drama of the season with great comedy.--Mark Englehart』

Tina Fey doesn't quite top my list of Hollywood hotties (declares the pig in me). What turns me on about her is her smarts, her wit and her sense of humor. I've geeked on her since her days in SNL, all the way to 30 ROCK and now to her theatrical releases. And is it too kinky to admit that her Sarah Palin impressions render her even more attractive? (dammit, it's too kinky, isn't it?) BABY MAMA is Fey's likable second feature film (after Mean Girls (Special Collector's Edition)), and it floats on the strength of Tina Fey's talents and her odd couple chemistry with Amy Poehler, also from Saturday Night Live. But, since it does feature Tina Fey, I expected something edgier. Instead BABY MAMA gives us formula.
Kate Holbrook (Fey) is a thriving, single career woman who, at the age of 37, suddenly gets the urge to have a baby. But when she finds out that she has a T-shaped uterus (apparently disastrous for conceiving), she resorts to a surrogate mother. Except that the baby mama the straight-laced Kate sets her eyes on is Angie (Poehler), a low income white trash girl. Uh oh. Then, it's just a matter of time before the film contrives a way to have Angie move in with Kate. Because we're about to venture into "Oh, snap!" territory.
After other films like Father of the Bride 2, Juno (Two-Disc Special Edition with Digital Copy) and Knocked Up (Unrated Widescreen Edition), BABY MAMA can't help but feel familiar, even if it does offer up a different perspective. The presence of both Fey and Poehler lends a singular SNL vibe to it all, although not so strong that it deters from the enjoyment of the movie. Michael McCullers's script goes for the big laughs, but also mines many opportunities for sentimentality.
The baby mama drama doesn't break new ground, but once you get over the disappointment of the picture's over-all blandness, you can sit back and soak it in. Fey and Poehler handle the dramatic elements with ease and warmth, and their contrasting personalities provide several good gags (I like what happens when Angie couldn't solve the locked toilet dilemma, and it's funny to me that the unhip Kate's entire arsenal of dance moves consists of framing her face over and over). One of Poehler's assets is this loose cannon energy she exudes and barely contains, and, here, it provides an effective synergy with Fey's more reserved core. Their culture clash scenes are fun to watch, specially when Tina puts on her appalled or bemused expression (which is often).
Poehler puts in enough work that you don't mind going thru that same old, same old. Her Angie starts out immature with horrible social manners, and her antics may make the more refined out there cringe. But she's not really meant to be an unlikable character. Gradually, Angie develops into a sympathetic woman-child.
The movie takes full advantage of Tina Fey's persona (I only wish she'd written this script). Fey has this ability to play it mousy and unassuming, yet at the same time be able to serve up her own digs. Not to mention, Fey can assume a harried mien like no one's business. No complaints about the supporting cast. Steve Martin enacts a health foods guru role and sports a ponytail wig. His character's a quirky sort, who rewards his minions with forehead-to-forehead bonding and with five minutes of uninterrupted eye contact. Sigourney Weaver runs a surrogacy center and it doesn't at all strike her character that it might tick off her clients when she blithely brags about her fertile body and constant state of pregnancy. Oh, Entitlement, thy name is Sigourney. Maura Tierney and Greg Kinnear show up but are underused. More relevant to the plot, Kinnear and Fey's romance needed more room to develop.
I might've laughed the loudest during the group therapy session, based solely on that one guy's line delivery regarding his dour Wiccan surrogate mom. I also like that the actor who plays the loser PC guy in all those PC/Mac tv commercials has a bit role. The dvd also comes with humorous audio commentary by writer/director Michael McCullers, producer Lorne Michaels, and a riffing Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
BABY MAMA, bland but enjoyable, would've been vastly improved if Tina Fey had written the script. I was expecting even more barbed skewering of stuff, more wicked jabs at obssessive upward mobility and the self-absorbed yuppie lifestyle and all things New Agey. Instead, what we get is bland.』

(Words do not describe....) 『Words cannot describe what happens when your family sits down and watches this movie during the month of December. It doesnt have to be Christmas Eve or Christmas night, any night you happened to have free in December will do. We do it every year. And honestly every year, we hear a funny line we never heard before. We must have been laughing too hard the year before. Every family should own this movie. Seeing it with commercials on tv isnt as good as watching it all the way through the way it was intended. This has got bo the funniest holiday movie ever made. A Christmas Story is up there and so is the original National Lampoons Vacation but there is something extra special about this one. It is a one-sided, nationalist reflection of most probably an ill personality. I am rating this DVD as 1-star. That single star is for the fact that, it is a very good example of how one can twist the realities of history according his desires.』
(Review of Attila '74) 『The best way to put this is that this is a very good documentary of the events that transpired in cyprus in 1974. The scenes were shot just after the conflict and the people that the filmaker speaks to have fresh memories of the events that transpired. There are some funeral scenes that are a bit intense and it seems that the mouners are playing to the camera a bit. Being a history buff , I thought the filmaker did a good job , got alot of the green line shots and did his best to show that Turkey was the evil invader in his opinion. I don't remember him speaking to many Turks though.』
(One side of the coin) 『I am a displaced "greek" Cypriot from the North part of Cyprus. This documentary fails to examine what led to Turkey's invation nor any of the atrocities we commited against the weaker turkish minority which we oppressed for years. A turkish-Cypriot could find no job, not even as a waiter, and we forced them to live in ghettos, in terrible poverty. IT WAS GREECE WHICH RAPED CYPRUS FIRST! In 1974 I was fourteen and I recall the first civilian casualties being from Greek tanks. Turkish tanks landed on the island five days later. This is never mentioned in our History textbooks. Most of us have been brainwashed through an intensely hellinocentric education where Greeks are always the good guys and the innocent victims, and through Greek Orthodox Religious Studies (an obligatory school subject since age five). Our schools breed racist Orthodox talibans who are totally intolerant of other religions, including other Christian denominations, and especially hostile towards Moslems. And when these talibans commit racist crimes (as in the 2005 murder of a turkish-Cypriot boy in Limassol) the press describe them simply as remote cases of mental illness instead of as mass products of our education system. The church here is so influential that I consider my country as the " Iran of the Christian World ". There even exist Iran-type church courts which nowadays (fortunately) deal mainly with Family Law cases. The Republic of Cyprus is the only European Union country where authorities violate human rights (US State Department Report on Human Rights, 2006) and the police torture citizens (Amnesty International Press Release on the torture of two handcuffed students by 12 policemen, April 2006). Trafficking of women for prostitution is semi-legal, big scandals are never resolved, night bombers, murderers and drug barons are seldom brought to justice, etc., etc. All this in half an island of 600.000 people with one of the highest percentages of policemen in Europe! I don't think the situation in the Northern part is that bad. There is a lower crime rate, it is a secular state where moslem clergy have no political power and it does not foster the illusion of being a "European" country. People there are more down to earth and less spoilt. Although the so-called "official" Republic of Cyprus is an independent member of the UN and the European Union it is in fact A PUPPET STATE OF GREECE: 1.We have been programmed to consider ourselves Greeks and not Cypriots. If Greece wins in an international contest in which Cyprus has lost, we celebrate as if our own country has won. We are ashamed to consider ourselves simply citizens of our country without any prefixes. If a native dares call himself a Cypriot and not a Greek, he is accused of being a traitor. (Same as if Norwegians believed to be Swedes just because they speak a similar language and have the same religion!) 2.Cyprus is the only country in the world without its own National Anthem (we use Greece's). 3.Our national flag is semi-official (it is subordinate to the Greek flag which is conspicuous on all government buildings, schools, churches, clubs, in the army, even in athletic facilities). During soccer games Cypriot flags are considered "provocative" symbols and are confiscated by the security but Greek flags are permited. 4.Major political decisions taken by our governement must first obtain the OK of the Greek prime minister. 5.Our army is run by officers from Greece. In April 2004 the United Nations, with the support of the United States, carried out a referendum for peace and reunification. The vast majority of greek-Cypriots voted No, employing all sorts of excuses (the president even wept on TV in his attempt to convince people vote No), while turkish-Cypriots voted Yes. The government, backed by the large communist-turned-nationalist party, considers this "No" as a victory against the almighty United States !!! It seems that most of us believe the ideal solution to be the construction of a Time-Machine that would transport us back to before 1974 and reestablish greek dynasty in the island. Deprogramming greek-Cypriots will not be an easy task and cinema can make a significant contribution. This film however is biased and superficial. It fails to clearly show younger generations what really happened before and during 1974 so as to prevent the recurrence of similar events in the future. 』
(Brilliant - a slap in the face for those who done it!) 『You can always tell those who support the invasion as they are the ones who rate this poorly. This documentary shows what every Cypriot experienced and remembers of that terrible period. It pushes history into the faces of those who are in denial. Just like the Germans try to forget the second world war, the Turks try to ignore that what they did was exactly as the title says: Rape Cyprus!!!』
(The Politics of Film) 『Interesting how so many of the comments are not about the film itself, but about the self righteousness of perceived truth. One thing for sure, this war, what led up to it, the consequences that it had for the people of Cyprus, is truly a forgotten place in world history, very few people know that it happened and what really ocurred. For that, this film has value, and whether it pretends or not to be a sole source is perhaps not important--any film will represent a point of view. Was it a good film as a film? I found it interesting because the topic is interesting, and there should be much more visibility of what happened, to both sides, during and after the 1974 war. My perspective on war is this: I was in a restaurant during the Falkans War, they announced that the British had just sunk the Argentinian Cruiser, and 800 Argentinians had died. The room erupted with cheering. My companion, who was from Cyprus, said: "But think of all the mothers" The room went quiet. This film does the same for me, for the people who suffered on both sides.』
