My fifth grade teacher even read to her class about it decades ago. In the way that I'm excited about modern biodiversity, I'm excited about the past. If humans can learn more about extinct species that once lived in Australia, then great. This work put the least interesting info first. Late in the work, they speak of how modern cat-scans can tell us things that anthropologists from a century ago could not know. That was refreshing, but all the wannabe-Indiana Jones stuff was not. But this work tries too hard to be sensationalistic. The narrator says, "Once the anthropologist got a photo of the skeleton, he knew he had to act fast before poachers arrived." What poachers!? Set up some video equipment and make sure no unauthorized person enters your excavation area. Talk to local police and see if they can surveillance at the sight. See if your university or a philanthropist will pay for detectives and other people to make sure no one robs your find. Poachers get away with things in under-developed countries because those countries don't have the financial and technical resources to stop them. Plus, this is not a rhino or panda that moves around and could hide somewhere. That darn skeleton can't move on its own! Next, the narrator says, "The team only has three weeks to obtain the skeleton." Why? Is it gonna get too cold or hot? Ask your university if it'll give you some parkas while you are digging? Talk to anthropologists in Alaska or Russia and get advice on how to do work in cold environments. Again, much ado about nothing! The work shows anthropologists going into tiny holes in the ground by rope. Can't you ask the engineering department if they can find a way to blast a huge hole in the ground without damaging the fossils? In pyramids, they try to make spaces for experts to conduct work. You see ladders and shovels and stairways in Ancient Egyptian stuff, why not do the same thing Down Under? Australia is too rich and its universities have too many resources for things to be as difficult as they are portrayed in this documentary. I really think the work wanted to portray anthropology as if it were exciting as Harrison Ford's character. So unnecessary! No disrespect to Australian accents, but they aren't heard that often in the US. The accents here were kinda distracting, if I'm allowed to be honest. It was hard to focus on the speakers' content when all I could think was "Shrimp on the barbie!" Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman, and Geoffrey Rush just don't have accents that thick. In the same way that the documentary "Grizzly Man" was great but had a distracting German-accented narrator, I honestly think many American viewers won't concentrate as much because the thick Australian accents are going to attract their attention instead, MATE! G'DAY!』 『Deep beneath the Nullarbor Plain, one of Australia's most hostile and barren landscapes, lies an ancient cave that has remained untouched for hundreds of thousands of years. Matt Damon reprises his role as Jason Bourne, the CIA-trained assasin who is struggling to put together the pieces of his past which have been shrouded in mystery ever since the first installment. Greengrass' "shaky cam" approach lends the film a thrilling sence of urgency and tension. We feel right there in the thick of the action with Jason Bourne as he dodges CIA operatives who are out to kill him on his trek home to Washington DC where he was trained and hopes to unlock the mystery of who he truly is. This is easily the best installment of the series. The action is relentless from the beginning and even when the movie slows down to catch its breath, the tension can still be felt. There is an absolutely amazing figh scene between Bourne and a fellow agent that concludes in a bathroom with a towel being used as the weapon of choice. I won't say any more about that. There is also a pulse pounding car chase sequence near the end of the film that begins, yes...begins, with a car being driven off the roof of a parking garage. Of course all of this action, as thrillingly filmed as it is, would mean nothing if the film didn't have a human heart. Matt Damon's performance as Bourne is wrought with emotion and remorse. You can feel the regret, sorrow, loss and anger in even the subtlest of actions. His character's inner torment is written all over his face. When the film finally arrives at it's conclusion, it manages to pull off a unique feat: it provides a satisfying sense of closure even as it completely alters our perception of Bourne and opens up a whole new series of questions about what made him who he is. This movie ultimately does what any great movie does: it leaves us immensely satisfied even while we want more. Although in this case, knowing less about the central figure may be the best way to wrap up the series.』 (Would have been OK if not for 2 major flaws) ![]() ![]() 『Not a bad thriller, but this film has two major problems: First, it is filmed with a "modern" shaky effect that gets tiring after a while. Second, there is (to my taste) a major scenario bug: without giving up the end, there is a moment when Bourne is on the phone with his worst CIA ennemy after Bourne managed to lure that guy and his minions out of their building on a false pretext. At that point, the super pro and efficient Bourne decides to tell his ennemy where he is, launching a 10 minutes chase episode. Why on earth would Bourne feel he has to give up his location ? There is "some" credibility (that is to say, if you agree to go along with the genre) in the rest of the movie, this kills it.』 (Now Nikki is involved, another movie?) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This was not a disappointment. With a new generation of skilled CIA operatives tracking his every move, Bourne is in a non-stop race around the globe as he finally learns the truth behind his mysterious past. Loaded with incredible fight and chase sequences, it's the exhilarating movie with "mind-blowing action" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times) that you can't afford to miss!』 『The often breathtaking, final installment in theBournetrilogy finds the titular assassin with no memory closing in on his past, finally answering his own questions about his real identity and how he came to be a seemingly unstoppable killing machine. While I'm not very familiar with this musical, I thought, "Just the cast makes me wanna see it." Long story short I finally saw it on DVD and pretended to be disgusted by the blood because my mom would've been horrified if I'd told her I liked it. I really loved the movie, especially the final scenes. I won't give it away. You'll be glued to your chair watching this well-executed tale of a man seeking revenge after years in prison on a false charge ("The Count Of Monte Cristo," anyone?). I admit, I was surprised that Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter (sorely underrated; see her magnificent performance in the classic "Mary Shelly's Frankenstein"), Timothy Spall&Sacha Baron Cohen (aka "Borat") could sing. Great deal for a spectacular movie.』 (A Good Introduction to Sondheim's Masterpiece) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『There are two kinds of people who are going to see this movie, and they will have two differing opinions about it. Please skip to the appropriate portion of the review. IF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN THE STAGE VERSION OF "SWEENEY TODD:" You will thoroughly enjoy this movie, as long as you can get over the fact that it's a musical (this is something they glossed over in the advertising, and is something you need to be aware of if you're going to enjoy the film). The story of the wronged barber Sweeney Todd, who returns from years in prison to find his wife dead and his daughter adopted by the corrupt judge who locked him away, is a fascinating study of one person's descent into madness. What begins as a quest for revenge eventually becomes a grisly tale of murder that involves the disturbing notion of killing someone and then baking them into meat pies. As Todd, Johnny Depp brings his typical depth to a complex and challenging role. He manages the deceptively tough task of simultaneously acting and singing, doing an admirable job with Sondheim's notoriously difficult and haunting score. Helena Bohnam Carter plays his parter in crime, the scheming and amoral Mrs. Lovett, who does the dirty work of cooking the victims and serving them to unsuspecting customers. Both play their roles in such a way that while you may not like or agree with what they are doing, you will totally understand their motivations and even emphathize with them as their dreams spiral out of control. There are also excellent turns by Alan Rickman as the corrupt Judge Turpin, the man Sweeney is ultimately after, and Timothy Spall as the seedy Beadle Bamford. Tim Burton's trademark style is a perfect fit for this incredibly dark tale, and the art direction is exquisite. The movie is never boring, always well executed, and one of the boldest artistic statements to come out of Hollywood in quite some time. IF YOU KNOW AND LOVE THE STAGE VERSION: You will be angry. You will lament the fact that the movie removes all of the gloriously complex ensemble music, leaving us with only an instrumental version of the thrilling "Ballad of Sweeney Todd" and a rendition of "God That's Good" that's butchered more than Sweeney's victims. You will likely be so busy complaining about these omissions that you will fail to realize that the only way the producers could get non-fans to take this seriously is to cute down on the large groups of people bursting into song and focusing on the core characters and plot points. You will at best tolerate Depp as Sweeney, and at worst complain that his thin-voiced singing robs the music of its guttural impact. You will think Helena Bohnam Carter totally mishandles her opening number "Worst Pies in London," and if you're really familiar with the stage show you'll notice Mrs. Lovett is the only character not to have a note of music cut, and then wonder if this is because Carter is sleeping with the director. You will contend that Sondheim's approval of the movie is motivated by money and obligation, and that when he goes home at night the famed composer despises the movie adaptation as much as you do. In short, you will hate this movie, and probably want to run home and listen to the original cast recording to remind yourself how the show is supposed to be done. As for myself, I fall in between the two camps. I love the stage version (it is my favorite musical of all time), and acknowledge the truth behind many of the flaws my fellow thespians see in this film. However, I think this adaptation manages to convey the heart and spirit of the stage version, and is probably the best way to transfer such an inherently theatrical piece to the big screen. I think Depp and Carter do an admirable job in their roles, although I wish they had better voices and think Carter is unaware of the enormous amount of fun to be had with the character of Lovett. Burton goes overboard with the blood, and the movie is so devoid of color that when the bright blues of the "By the Sea" sequence show up it is truly jarring. I think (and I would argue that the objective theatre fan would agree) that this "Sweeney Todd" is as good a movie as we were likely to get, but ultimately Sweeney and Lovett belong on the stage. It is the mark of a work of art that it can only truly work in its chosen medium, and the stage version of "Sweeney" is unequivocally a work of art.』 (Music, Murder, and Mischief) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Most of Tim Burton's movies are a lot of fun to watch and amazing to look at. However, a lot of the times the narratives tend to be less than compelling and even though they were amazing to look at, everything else fades from memory quite quickly. Notably exceptions being "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Ed Wood". Now comes, "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" which is the most delicious work (pun intended) Burton has delivered in his twenty plus year as a director. To me "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" plays out like an evil version of one of those Disney animated musical from the early nineties. Those movies seemed to be composed of two young lovers from different worlds who have to go to impossible ends to be with each other, and the girl often has a overbearing yet loving father, and there is always a villain to make sure the girl and boy are kept apart. In this story the villain interferes with the girls life when she is a mere infant. As the movie opens "Sweeney Todd(played flawlessly by Johnny Depp), formerly Benjamin Barker is returning to London after fifteen years of exile after being brought up on a false charge. The audience quickly learns that Benjamin Barker had a wife named Lucy who he was madly in love with, but so was the unscrupulous Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman) who has Barker sent away so he can take the wife as his own. After many rejections by the woman, the Judge takes Mrs. Barker by force, driving her mad. And to make things even better for the family the Judge Turpin adopts Barker's daughter Johanna to raise as his own, and imprison her as she blossoms into womanhood with the intent of marrying her. Shortly after returning to London Todd returns to his home, which is above a shopped own by Helena Boham-Carter-Burton's Mrs. Lovett, who happens to sell the worst meat pies in London. Mrs. Lovett realizes right away that Sweeney Todd is really Benjamin Barker and takes an immediate liking to him. In the meantime Todd's imprisoned daughter, Johanna, spies a sailor (the same sailor who delivers Todd to London) and the two fall instantly in love. Now in most Disney animated movies the action is centered on the young lovers while the adults are put in the background. Most of the action here is on Sweeney Todd, a moping monster whose only purpose in life is to have revenge for the wrongs done to him. This movie is interesting in many ways, namely the relationship between Mr. Todd and Mrs. Lovett. It's obviously she will do anything to win his affection. However, he is indifferent to her unless she is able to help him get his revenge. There are several scenes in which Todd speaks to Mrs. Lovett as if she is just a distraction. Despite his bitter rage and nastiness Mrs. Lovett still dreams of moving to the sea and getting married to Mr. Todd. One of the best scenes in the movie is when it seems as if Todd is about to open up to Mrs. Lovett and then a clue about how to get his revenge on the judge comes his way, and she is instantly forgotten. Judge Turpin has to be the nastiest villain in all of Tim Burton's movies. And these are villains that include the Joker, the Penguin, blood thirsty Martians, and the boogie man. This guy not only destroys a family on the whim of his own lust, he intends to marry the daughter. The fact that the daughter falls for the young sailor puts her in a terrible situation. And there this is Mrs. Lovett. Here is a character with the morals of a half starved alley cat. She thinks murder is inexcusable unless it is justified (A character tries to bribe Sweeney Todd) or if it can be to her benefit (Using the bodies of victims to boost her pie selling business). Part of the greatness of her role is how nonchalantly she reacts to the murders of several people as long as she stands to gain by them. As great as the story is I can honestly stay Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter can both hold their own as singers. Alan Rickman, great actor, but not so much. The atmosphere of the sets also contribute to the melancholy feel of this movies. Tim Burton has made violent, bloody movies before but they always tended to have an upbeat tone. As I said, it reminded me if an evil Disney movie. After seeing "Beauty and the Beast" I left the theater humming the songs. After this one I walked out feeling like I just had attended a funeral. Still, this is an elegant movie and Burton's best work. Final note...the blu ray quality is very good, but not great. 』 (Superb Performances By An All Star Cast) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『A wonderful dark comedy with an amazing musical score and stellar performances by Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman and most of all the talented Helena Bonham Carter who assumes the role of Mrs. Lovett with the ease of slipping into a pair of slacks.』 『Studio: Paramount Home Video Release Date: 10/21/2008 Run time: 116 minutes Rating: R』 『After years of rumors, it turns out that Tim Burton was the perfect visionary to filmSweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Stephen Sondheim's Broadway masterpiece, and the result is a macabre and moving musical movie as enthralling as anything Burton has ever done. The show's mix of gothic horror, Grand Guignol, verydark humor, and witty and beautiful music never was the stuff of traditional musical comedy, but it's a powerful work, and perhaps the richest of the late 20th century. In the movie, Burton's frequent collaborator, Johnny Depp, plays Todd, a wronged man whose lust for revenge drives him to murder (an 19th-century legend who has been traced to a real-life barber). Helena Bonham Carter, another Burton mainstay, is Mrs. Lovett, the barber's partner-in-unspeakable-crime. It's no surprise that Depp is an excellent choice to convey Todd's brooding intensity and volcanic rage, but he can also sing a score that is so challenging it has often played in opera houses (though not with the same style as the Broadway original, Len Cariou, and he occasionally lapses into pop style). Bonham Carter is small of voice and lacks the humor of the original Broadway Lovett, Angela Lansbury, but she sings on pitch, in rhythm, and in character at the same time, which is no small feat for a Sondheim show. Aficionados will regret the loss of certain musical passages--"The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" is just an instrumental overture and the chorus is gone altogether, among others--but the reassuring presence of orchestrator Jonathan Tunick and conductor Paul Gemignani ensures that the music feels right and sounds great. And the film's depiction of a Victorian London hellhole--with cinematography by Dariusz Wolski and costumes by Colleen Atwood--also looks and feels right. The excellent cast is filled out by Alan Rickman as the villainous Judge Turpin, Timothy Spall as his seedy Beadle, Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) as a rival barber, Jamie Campbell Bower as the young lover Anthony, Jayne Wisener as his object of affection, and Ed Sanders as the young Toby. For fans of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp who don't think they like musicals,Sweeney Toddshould be a revelation (though not for the squeamish, as the gore is intense and completely appropriate). For fans of Broadway and Sondheim, it's hard to imagine getting a better adaptation than this. That's only fair because it is a subject of such importance to America. If you think Moore exaggerated, then please read my own horror stories below. No one should oppose National Health Insurance without first seeing Michael Moore's unrelenting line of horror stories about American health care--a mere selection of 25,000 stories. But I will not repeat Moore's horror stories. I'll give you some of my own. A doctor tried to talk me into a hernia operation. Coincidentally, I saw another doctor a week later. He checked me and said that I didn't have a hernia and that I should never go back to that doctor. Hello, in other words, I was going to pay for that doctor's swimming pool! In the US the incentive for doctors is to perform more and more operations, not to keep people well (as in other countries). My nephew went to see a find doctor at a major medical center, but the doctor refused to diagnose or treat my nephew. Actually, he was doing my nephew a favor because if he had tested him or treated him, he would not have been able to get long-term care insurance. He went out and got the insurance, and had to wait a year to go back to see the doctor! The waiting period! I had to wait 90 days to get coverage with a new job. In the meantime, I was coughing all over my students. Let us all agree to this American creed: No American should loose their home or life savings simply because they get sick. How can anyone disagree with that? The American middle class had better wake up. Regardless of whether you have health insurance or not, you are only one or two diseases away from loosing our life savings and homes. National health insurance is the only answer, taking the best from the other countries that have it (and have a longer life expectancies--we rank 42). Those who oppose national health insurance should do the honorable thing and turn down Medicare as a matter of principle. American cancer survival rates are higher, but note the following: In response to an email that I sent, the Nation Cancer Institute said that "55.8 percent of all cancer cases are diagnosed in people 65 years and older." So Medicare has a big input in those survival rates. Probably even a greater impact in hip replacements. So the argument that government health insurance results in poor quality care is bogus. Now quick, would you want to go to the Mayo Clinic, John Hopkins Medical Center, or a major VA hospital? ANSWER: THE VA PERFORMS BETTING IN ALMOST ALL AREAS. My two cousins love it. Don't believe the lies told about Canada. Sara Robinson, who has duel Canadian-American citizenship, refuted common myths told about Canadian health care in "Ten Myths about the Canadian Health Care System" (see internet). One of those great myths is that Canada's health-care system is "socialized medicine." False: In socialized medical systems, the doctors work directly for the state. In Canada (and many other countries with universal care), doctors run their own private practices, just like they do in the US. The only difference is that every doctor deals with one insurer, instead of 150. The percentage of Canadians who'd consider giving up their beloved system consistently languishes in the single digits. A few years ago, a TV show asked Canadians to name the Greatest Canadian in history; and in a broad national consensus, they gave the honor to Tommy Douglas, the Saskatchewan premier who is considered the father of the country's health care system. It is both true and false that there are longer waits. It all depends where you live. For the vast majority of Canadians, it is not true, but true for a few. It is false that Canadians don't get to choose theirs own doctor. Somebody, somewhere, is getting paid a lot of money to make this kind of stuff up. A bogus falsehood. Canadian drugs are not the same. This is more preposterous bogosity. They are exactly the same drugs, made by the same pharmaceutical companies, often in the same factories. The Canadian drug distribution system, however, has much tighter oversight; and pharmacies and pharmacists are more closely regulated. If there is a difference in Canadian drugs at all, they're actually likely to be safer. It is false that publicly-funded programs will inevitably lead to rationed health care, particularly for the elderly. Sara Robinson calls this myth "False and bogglingly so." "The papers would have a field day if there was the barest hint that this might be true." Basic morality 101: No person should loose their home or life savings because they are sick. One of my readers is from Germany, and she worked at a private clinic in England. Their customers were wealthy Arabs, who could have come to the USA, but chose England. Why would they choose a so-called "socialist country"? Because England does not have socialized medicine--there are private hospitals, private doctors, and private insurance. You cannot argue with life spans in countries with universal coverage. Here they are (overall, male and female--females live longer). I am looking only at major countries. There is something wrong when other capitalist countries are better off than our wealthy country. Major Countries by Lifespan (all have universal health care). These countries except Cuba are ALL ranked in the world's top 10 capitalistic economic competitive list. We have a serious health care problem in America and he brings out the ugly truth in a humorous and thoughtful way. As one of the most developed countries in the world we should be ashamed we do not have universal health care.』 (If you like silly exaggerations, you will like this.) ![]() 『Filled with many well produced exaggerations designed to make a point and not necessary the truth of the situation. While healthcare needs reform in the US, pointing to healthcare systems in other countries where their citizens come to the US for care if they can afford the cost is ridiculous. Anyone that's followed Michael Moore's work has learned to expect a certain amount of exaggeration in his films, but Sicko sets a new high bar for him. Net-Net: entertaining fiction presented as truth.』 『Following on the heels of his Palm d'Or winning Fahrenheit 9/11 and his Oscar winning film Bowling for Columbine, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Moore's new documentary sets out to investigate the American healthcare system. Sticking to his tried-and-true one-man approach, Moore sheds light on the complicated medical affairs of individuals and local communities.』 『SiCKOis more like a controlled howl of protest than a documentary. Toning down the rhetoric of past efforts--no CEOs, congressmen, or celebrities were accosted in the making of this film--Michael Moore's latest provocation is just as heartfelt, if not more heartbreaking. As he clarifies from the outset, his subject isn't the 45 million Americans without insurance, but those whose coverage has failed to meet their needs. He starts by speaking with patients who've been denied life-saving procedures, like chemotherapy, for the most spurious of reasons. Then he travels to Canada, England, and France to see if socialized medicine is as inefficient as U.S. politicians like to claim--especially those who receive funding from pharmaceutical companies. Moore finds quality care available to all, regardless as to income. He concludes with a stunt that made headlines when he assembles a group of 9/11 rescue workers suffering from a variety of afflictions. When Moore is informed that detainees at Guantánamo Bay--technically American soil--qualify for universal coverage, he and his companions travel to Cuba to get in on that action. It's a typically grandstanding move on Moore's part. And it proves remarkably effective when these altruistic individuals, who've either been denied treatment or forced to pay outrageous costs for their medication, experience a dramatically different system. Nine years in the making,SiCKOmakes a persuasive case that it's time for America to catch up with the rest of the world.--Kathleen C. James Spader plays the Egyptologist who successfully translates the Stargate's hieroglyphic code, and then joins a hawkish military unit (led by Kurt Russell) on a reconnaissance mission to see what's on the other side. They arrive on a desert world with cultural (and apparently supernatural) ties to Earth's ancient Egypt, where the sun god Ra (played by Jaye Davidson fromThe Crying Game) rules a population of slaves with armored minions and startlingly advanced technology. After being warmly welcomed into the slave camp, the earthlings encourage and support a rebellion, and while Russell threatens to blow up the Stargate to prevent its use by enemy forces, the movie collapses into a senseless series of action scenes and grandiose explosions. It's all pretty ridiculous, but Stargate found a large and appreciative audience, spawned a cable-TV series, and continues to attract science fiction fans who are more than willing to forgive its considerable faults.--Jeff Shannon』 fetish『 Ric Flair&The Four Horsemen (2 Discs) 』 『 Heroes of World Class Wrestling 』 『 WWE - The Ultimate Ric Flair Collection 』 『 WWE - The Ladder Match 』 『 Happy Days - The Complete First Season 』 『 The Triumph and Tragedy of World Class Championship Wrestling 』
