『I thought this was a cool documentary. It's a good movie about a journey of surfers who push the limits just to find some unsurfed waves. The quality of surfing is good, but it's the trip that's amazing.』
Experience One of the Longest Waves Ever Filmed From Inside the Barrell!
In the world of surfing, there exists a group of elite surfers whose sole mission in life is to surf the unknown. From California to Australia, surfers have marked up the map with legendary surf spots, which over the years have become polluted and overcrowded. But this elite group is constantly hunting for untapped waves. Searching across the globe, they have come to the islands of Indonesia, where the most consistent world-class waves can be found around every bend. However, to reach the perfect waves onThe Forgotten Coast, an extreme physical and mental journey is required. Join Brian Conley, Travis Potter, Daniel Thomson, Micah Byrne, Brett Schwartz, Brandon Tipton and Ben Knight, seven of the world's best surfers as they experience the travel, the adventure and the purest waves on earth!
Special Features include: Commentary Track with Travis Potter and Director Justin LePera; Exclusive Interview with Surfer Brian Conley; The Forgotten CoastScreensaver; Photo Gallery by Brian Nevins, Jeff Dolen; Deleted Scenes』

『For many surfers, the notion of "going feral" is associated mainly with azure blue waves breaking on powdered sandy beaches. It is the casting aside of everyday monotonies for the pursuit of point-break excellence. The Forgotten Coastfuels this romantic ideal, as the exotic locales, glassy sets, and empty lineups are the stuff of wave-riding fantasy. However, it also documents the less-publicized realities of surf exploration that so often escape our daydreams. The intrepid crew of Travis Potter, Brian Conley, Daniel Thomson, Micah Byrne, Brandon Tipton, Brett Schwartz, and Ben Knight encounter sketchy boat captains, hellacious weather, nasty infections, and more as they seek out the finest waves Indonesia has to offer. Proving that it takes much more than just a quiver of boards to make a boat trip, these surfing nomads explore the unexplored by relying on each other and respecting the kindness of locals. It's not always glamorous, but the payback of pristine surf makes the journey worthwhile.--Dave Callanan

(Stunning movie, all-star cast)
『This movie is about Howard Hughes who was an amazing man who suffered from a severe case of OCD. I loved this movie because it didn't show the disease comically. Leonardo DiCaprio took time researching it and really gets the audience to understand how horrible the diease can be and how Howard Hughes struggled with it. Back in those times, it was not as known and studied so treatment was not really there.

This is a captivating movie and the special features are great. The plot keeps moving and it never gets boring. It is one of Leonardo DiCaprio's best works. I highly recommend this movie to anyone and everyone. Especially people who enjoy movies that are a biography of sorts. An absolute must-see and must-own.』

(I had such consideration...)
『...for Martin Scorcese that I feel very sorry for his precocious senility. I can't think of any other explanation (there is no excuse) for mistaking di Caprio for an actor (which is about as ludicrous as mistaking McDos for restaurants). And, since he's persisting in polluting the screens with something whose only merit is he never will be a "Has Been" (since he never was anything in the first place), from now on I will keep clear from Scorcese's movies.』

(Overrated)
『The problem that almost all biopics have is that they tell far too much of their subjects' life facts that most of the drama is drained. They never seem to find the important nor key moments in a life in which to imbue the tale, rather they cram a life with minutia, and miss out on any real insight. Such it is with Martin Scorsese's latest film, now out on DVD. The Aviator spans twenty or so years in the life of Howard Hughes, the reclusive billionaire and eccentric, but never delves into the man, merely glossing the surface of its subject, mainly due to the pallid script by John Logan of Gladiator infamy. Having recently watched a DVD version of Raging Bull, from 1980, the difference is stark. I've never thought Raging Bull was Scorsese's best work- it's not on a par with Taxi Driver, The King Of Comedy, After Hours, nor Goodfellas- but it can be argued as a great film, and it's a cut above this film whose first half has potential, albeit flawed, but whose second half reeks.
The film has many flaws, other than the script, though. The major one being Leonardo DiCaprio is simply not a good nor compelling actor, especially in comparison to Robert De Niro. He is, next to Tom Cruise, perhaps the most milquetoast and passionless actor going and radiates none of the magnetism, power, and arrogance of the real man- he is a boy pretending to be a man, and clearly way out of his league. He has absolutely zero range, and is unwilling to let go of himself to the role. He is always Leonardio DiCaprio, never Howard Hughes. Better actors, like Brad Pitt in Kalifornia or A River Runs Through It, do so. DiCaprio is woefully miscast- although since he shepherded the film to fruition Scorsese had little choice but to use him. First off, he doesn't age, as Hughes, in the twenty years of the film- what? Was all the money gone for looser prosthetic jowls or crow's feet? At forty-five Hughes still looks like a teenager, especially in scenes with his airline rival Juan Trippe, as played by Alec Baldwin, a man who in real life was only a few years older than Hughes. Next to Baldwin the two characters seem of different generations- as the fey DiCaprio may not be able to pass for thirty until he's fifty or sixty, and certainly never lets us in to the `real' Hughes', as he is content with mere gesticulation. DiCaprio also looks nothing like Hughes, facially, but that's not so important if the acting is up to snuff- think Anthony Hopkins as Richard Nixon in Oliver Stone's Nixon. This evidences itself in that DiCaprio sounds nothing like Hughes, and the constant ticking and twitching he does to suggest that Hughes suffered from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is just too carny for a convincing dramatic role, even up to the film's final shot of Hughes in a Tourette's Syndrome-like daze- which is far too reminiscent of both the prison and end scenes of Raging Bull. It's never a good sign when a director has to rip off a better, earlier film of his own.... While not bad, that's also not good. If you need proof just ask yourself if you ever thought you'd hear a phrase like `a rather conventional Hollywood film by Martin Scorsese' and you'll get the points that Scorsese did not.

(Cate Blanchett Owns This Movie)
『"The Aviator" IS Cate Blanchett's film, her Oscar deserving role as Katherine Hepburn is so dead-on, you'd think she was possessed by her spirit. As for the film, not bad, a little slow at times, the CGI is horrific, and Alan Alda's performance as the slimy senator is quite good.
The Blu-Ray is loaded with extras, and the transfer is quite clean, probably in the top 20.
I've never really been a Dicaprio fan, but if he keeps making movies with Marty Scorsese ("The Departed"), I think one these days, he'll get his own Oscar.』

『An epic biopic depicting the early years of legendary director and aviator Howard Hughes' career, from the late 1920's to the mid-1940's.』
『From Hollywood's legendary Cocoanut Grove to the pioneering conquest of the wild blue yonder, Martin Scorsese'sThe Aviatorcelebrates old-school filmmaking at its finest. We say "old school" only because Scorsese's love of golden-age Hollywood is evident in his approach to his subject--Howard Hughes in his prime (played by Leonardo DiCaprio in his)--and especially in his technical mastery of the medium reflecting his love for classical filmmaking of the studio era. Even when he's using state-of-the-art digital trickery for the film's exciting flight scenes (including one of the most spectacular crashes ever filmed), Scorsese's meticulous attention to art direction and costume design suggests an impassioned pursuit of craftsmanship from a bygone era; every frame seems to glow with gilded detail. And while DiCaprio bears little physical resemblance to Hughes during the film's 20-year span (late 1920s to late '40s), he efficiently captures the eccentric millionaire's golden-boy essence, and his tragic descent into obsessive-compulsive seclusion. Bolstered by Cate Blanchett's uncannily accurate portrayal of Katharine Hepburn as Hughes' most beloved lover,The Aviatoris easily Scorsese's most accessible film, inviting mainstream popularity without compromising Scorsese's artistic reputation. As compelling crowd-pleasers go, it's a class act from start to finish.--Jeff Shannon

(Best of the westerns)
『Controversy has swirled around this western ever since its release in 1956. Chief among the criticisms leveled at it is John Wayne's Ethan Edwards' "racist" hatred of the Comanches, manifested from the first minute he sees his brother's stepson, who is one-eighth Indian. In this day and age, when anything that smacks of "racism" is deemed to lower a work of art's rating, Edwards' freely voiced antipathy to the Indians is considered by many to be more than sufficient to demote this film from "Best Western of all time," which some have called it.

I don't feel that way about "The Searchers." Ethan Edwards was a product of his time and society, and thus would not have stuck out as particularly "different" among Southern and Western men of that day. After all, it is made clear that he fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War.

The only flaw I find in the depiction of Edwards' racial views is that the movie never makes quite clear why he holds them to such an extreme degree. None of the other settlers appear to share his smoldering hatred of the Comanche. I have read a review which says that one can catch a fleeting glimpse of a tombstone in the scene in the cemetery; the epitaph states that a woman with the last name "Edwards" was killed by the Comanche years earlier. Could this have been Ethan's mother? His wife? No clue is ever given.

All that having been said, the film is, I think, probably the greatest western ever made, partly because of the intense character study it does of Ethan Edwards. It does not condemn him as a "racist," or as anything else. It merely shows him to us; the decision is ours to make. And I disagree with some reviewers who believe that Edwards seems to see the "error of his ways" in the final scenes. He sees no such thing. Look at his face in the more intense scenes leading up to the attack on Scar's camp, and you can see both rage and hatred etched in that face. Then look at his face again, in the brief shot just after he has exited Scar's tent, the dead Indian's scalp in his hand, and you'll see the hatred and anger gone; it has been purged by Scar's execution. When he approaches his niece, kidnapped five years before by the Indians and presumably having been "sleeping with a buck" -- Edwards' reason for wanting earlier to kill her -- one can tell by his manner that he now comes only to carry her home safely.

Perhaps it's the mark of a great movie when people can disagree, often strongly, about its characters and meanings. "The Searchers" is one of those great movies.』

(The Duke On The Warpath)
『It doesn't take much to get John Wayne rawled in this classic John Ford epic,The Searchers,1956,as the duke is Ethan Edwards,a Civil War veteran who finally rides home after a long and drawn out war between the states, only to find another war with the Comanches. After his entire family is wiped out,the duke sets out to seek revenge and find his only surviving niese (Natalie Wood) who was captured by the hostile Indians. This classic film is listed in the top one hundred films of all time, and is also one of the duke's better acting roles-Oscar worthy, with a solid supporting cast,Ward Bond,Jeff Hunter, and featuring superb cinematography and bold scenery, and the usual John Wayne western action, the 100th anniversary version dvd is 16x9 widescreen,no extras.』

(HD Home Theater (HDMI) w/Blu-ray brings John Wayne's 1956 Widescreen Western Classic Home better than ever. (explained))
『Experiencing this 1956 Widescreen WESTERN Classic in the movie houses was breath taking and unbelievable with that bigger than life panoramic screen and John Wayne.

Not since 1956 have we been able to re-experience that magical event until NOW! Yes my fellow classics movie buffs this Blu-ray Hi-Def (HDMI) Picture and Digital Sound version we can NOW enjoy "THE SEARCHERS" better than its original film quality!

My qualifying statement: My HD Home Theater weighs in at about $2000 plus movies. A breakdown is; a Mitsubishi HD Projector (HC-1500) $800 (orig $1495), a Sony 5.1 Blu-ray Sound System $399 (orig $499) and a Sony PLAYSTATION 3 w/Blu-ray player $399 (orig $499). Sony HDMI cables $150 and HD Screen Paint and Kit $180 for my 108" viewing wall screen. With this 1080p system I've created a HD Home Theater presentation sight and sound equal to an IMAX (on a smaller scale) experience.

This 1080p HDMI Blu-ray showing blows your minds eye, period. You must add this western classic to your movie library, TODAY!!!!

A live and well John Wayne is the reward alone. This 1956 Western Classic allows us to escape seeing the youthful movie stars back into our lives once again. With this Blu-ray movie you are swept off to where ever they take you. Its truly an amazing adventure of sight and sound Pilgrim!!』

『Working together for the 12th time, John Wayne and director John Ford forged The Searchers into an indelible image of the frontier and the men and women who challenged it. Wayne plays ex-Confederate soldier Ethan Edwards, a believer more in bullets than in words. He's seeking his niece, captured by Comanches who massacred his family. He won't surrender to hunger, thirst, the elements or loneliness. And in his obsessive, five-year quest, Ethan encounters something he didn't expect to find: his own humanity.』
『A favorite film of some of the world's greatest filmmakers, including Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, John Ford'sThe Searchershas earned its place in the legacy of great American films for a variety of reasons. Perhaps most notably, it's the definitive role for John Wayne as an icon of the classic Western--the hero (or antihero) who must stand alone according to the unwritten code of the West. The story takes place in Texas in 1868; Wayne plays Ethan Edwards, a Confederate veteran who visits his brother and sister-in-law at their ranch and is horrified when they are killed by marauding Comanches. Ethan's search for a surviving niece (played by young Natalie Wood) becomes an all-consuming obsession. With the help of a family friend (Jeffrey Hunter) who is himself part Cherokee, Ethan hits the trail on a five-year quest for revenge. At the peak of his masterful talent, director Ford crafts this classic tale as an embittered examination of racism and blind hatred, provoking Wayne to give one of the best performances of his career. As with many of Ford's classic Westerns,The Searchersmust contend with revisionism in its stereotypical treatment of "savage" Native Americans, and the film's visual beauty (the final shot is one of the great images in all of Western culture) is compromised by some uneven performances and stilted dialogue. Still, this is undeniably one of the greatest Westerns ever made.--Jeff Shannon

(Hilarious and Heart-Warming)
『People look at me like I'm nuts when I tell them that this is my favorite of the Home Alone films. Well whatever. The main reason that I like this movie is because of the way they portray New York's best sights like Central Park, etc. Whereas the first movie kept most of the scenes at his home, this one explores other scenery. And the cast is hilarious. My favorite character (aside from Kevin)is the bird/homeless woman who ends up being a sweetheart. I always choke up at the end when she and Kevin hug it out. I think everyone should have this movie in their holiday collection. Yes, and the first one too.』

(Love the movie, HATE the DVD)
『This review is not for the movie, which i love, i grew up on this one. It's for the DVD. It is letterbox and looks like crap on a widescreen tv. Wait for them to re-master this one like they did for the original in the 'Family Fun Edition' which i recommend. Do Not, i repeat, DO NOT waste your money on this one. Hope this helps someone not make the mistake i did.』

『Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) is back! But this time he's in New York City with enough cash and credit cards to turn the Big Apple into his own playground! But Kevin won't be alone for long. The notorious Wet Bandits, Harry and Marv (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern), still smarting from their last encounter with Kevin, are bound for New York too, plotting a huge holiday heist. Kevin's ready to welcome them with a battery of booby traps the bumbling bandits will never forget!』
『This somewhat unpleasant 1992 sequel to the blockbusterHome Alonerevisits the first film's gimmick by stranding Macaulay Culkin's character in New York City while his family ends up somewhere else. Again, the little guy meets up with colorful people on the margins of society (including a pigeon woman played by Brenda Fricker) and again he gets into a prop-heavy battle with Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. The latter sequence is even worse than the first film in terms of violence inflicted on the two villains (director Chris Columbus, who also made the first film, can't seem to emphasize the slapstick over the graphic effects of the fight). The best running joke finds a concierge (Tim Curry) at the swank hotel where Culkin is staying trying and failing to prove that the boy is on his own.--Tom Keogh

(MORE HARRYHAUSEN WIZARDRY)
『Yet another Ray Harryhausen film from the 1950's has just been released on DVD in a two disc special edition. It Came from Beneath the Sea comes in between The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and Earth Vs. the Flying Saucers. It's probably the least of those three films but I always liked this one even more than "Earth Vs..." This is such a product of the 1950's when the paranoia over nuclear testing was at its highest. The result was a plethora of films featuring all manner of radioactive-spawned giant monsters: spiders, ants, grasshoppers, and other beasties. In this film the threat comes from a giant octopus, driven out of its deep sea home by atomic bombs tested at sea.

The first to encounter the creature is a U.S. Navy nuclear sub, commanded by Pete Matthews (Tobey). The sub doesn't know exactly what they've encountered but a piece of the creature was caught in the Sub's propellers. The hunk of octopus is taken to be analyzed by two marine biologists, Prof. Lesley Joyce (Domergue) and Prof. John Carter (Curtis). They determine that the piece belongs to an octopus but one that has grown to enormous proportions.

The creature soon makes attacks on other vessels, sinking an entire merchant ship, and leaving only a handful of shocked survivors. While the Navy at first dismisses the professor's findings, they soon cannot deny the truth and decide to take action. The film's climax comes with the memorable octopus attack destroying the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Like all of these films, it's the masterful stop-motion effects that are the real star. While the film itself took only a few weeks to shoot, Harryhausen worked on the effects for months afterwards, painstakingly filming the creature's movement's one frame at a time. Yes, perhaps it looks dated next to today's slick CGI effects but there's a certain admiration you have to have for Harryhausen's work. He knew these were low-budget B features but that never stopped him from delivering 100% effort.

It Came from Beneath the Sea is slower than the other films I mentioned. It takes a good 25 minutes or so before we even get a good look at the creature for the first time and the film only runs about 79 minutes. There is a melodramatic love triangle going on between the three leads. Matthews is the tough captain while Carter is the somewhat sheepish scientist. When Professor Joyce tells carter that Matthews kissed her, all he can manage is, "Did you enjoy it?"

That said, I enjoyed the cast. Tobey was a great character actor who made over 300 film and TV appearances in his fifty year career. He was a regular in the 1950's TV show "Whirlybirds" and

(A film you will never forget.)
『First let me say that my title of this movie is very true. It's not just something I thought would look good as a title. Once you see this movie you will remember it to some degree for the rest of your life. If you watch it alone you will tell your friends and family about it. You will probably let them borrow it or watch it with them just so you can see it again. The movie runs for 3 hours but I did not get tired once. I lost myself in the movie. When I was watching it everything around me disappeared.

The movie has a great cast. Some of the main people are Tome Hanks who plays Paul Edgecomb the head of part of a prison called the green mile (more on that later.) You may remember Hanks from movies like Big 1988 and Philadelphia 1993. David Morse who plays Brutus Howell. You have seen him in movies like The Getaway 1994 and 16 blocks 2006. Michael Clark Duncan who plays John Coffey. He has bee in the films The whole nine yards 2000 and Sin City 2005. These are just some of the great actors in this movie They are all giving some of the greatest performances I have ever seen.

Now for the movie. I do not want to give away the big parts of the film, so I will try to tell you about it while at the same tie keeping the main stuff a mystery. The movie is about a man that is accused of committing a horrible crime. He is sentenced to death and sent to the green mile. The green mile is what the men who work in this part of the prison call it. It is death row. The man accused may be more than a man. You will have to watch to see what I mean. During the end something happens that will make you so mad that he is being put to death. You will think about it for a while. He will hurt 2 men in the prison. One who works there and one who has become a prisoner. You will find out why these men had happen to them what they did. Also, you will ask yourself why about something. The question will be about something very important in the movie. But you will come to find out at the very end that sometimes even good men, whom do things that may be considered good. Must pay for that which they did. Even if not by being in pain or suffering. This movie will probably make you sad because you will take something the prisoner says to hank's character at the end and really think about how true it is in life.

What the basic meaning of all this is, this movie will make so many people happy. As I said earlier you will more than likely never forget it. Buying it is a great idea because you will want to see it again. Whether with a friend, family member or alone. You may even want to watch it twice in a row to make sure you didn't miss anything important. I am sure that this film is in the top 100 films ever made list. After you watch it you can decide on your own if you think it should be or not. Enjoy!

(Just an Outstanding Film!)
『What a great movie! I'm not a huge Tom Hanks fan but have enjoyed some of his films. This one, though, may end up as being my favorite of his. Filled with great scenes of both hope and tragedy, of sorrow and of joy, with just a touch of redemption thrown in.

Based on a book by Stephen King, the Green Mile starts off in modern day times and then uses a "flashback" to tell the story of a group of death row guards during the depression and the strange story of a condemmed prisoner named John Coffy (played magnificiently by Michael Duncan). The story is a mix of drama, humor, and adds the spiritual/mystical as only Stephen King can do. The story also has one of the most creative twists at the end. Very surprising!

But what takes this movie one of the best I've personally watched is the supporting cast. Besides the well known David Morse&Bonnie Hunt, we get James Cromwell (L.A. Confidential, Star Trek - First Contact), Michael Jeter (Open Range), Graham Greene (Dances with Wolves (Widescreen Edition)), Sam Rockwell (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Widescreen Edition))&Harry Dean Stanton (way too many great roles to pick just a couple).

I would recommend this to any movie buff looking for originality and creativity. Great actors, great story, great film!』

(I'm tired. I'm tired of being alone. But mostly ... I'm tired of people being ugly to each other.)
『In its simplest form The Green Mile is about an eye for an eye ... but when have you known Stephen King to be simple? Stephen King ... the man who gets paid fifty thousand dollars for writing "boo" on a napkin. Stephen King. In the beginning we meet an elderly gentleman who tells of his time working on "The Green Mile" Death Row for inmates in Louisiana's Cold Mountain Penitentiary. Shortly thereafter, we meet John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) who was sentenced to death for the murder of two young girls. From his introduction (Michael Clarke Duncan) plays the role of the child-like John Coffey filled with boyish impetuosity to perfection.

During this time, Paul Edgecombe (Tom Hanks) is suffering from a urinary tract infection ... and the extraordinary that is John Coffey shows itself. This miracle of God has the mystical ability to heal. At the same time we meet Percy Wetmore (Doug Hutchison) a mean, stupid, sadistic man. In this setting, that is a dangerous combo, but he is the nephew of the governor's wife. Next we meet a violent prisoner named Wild Bill (Sam Rockwell) who is sentenced to death for killing three people in a robbery attempt. During the film, when Wild Bill grabs John Coffey's arm we learn who the real killer of the two young girls is.

In its simplest form The Green Mile is about an eye for an eye ... the problem with that is ... everyone ends up blind. With John Coffey being innocent, Paul is left with the life altering decision of what to do. Does he put to death one of God's true miracles? During a conversation with his wife, Paul decides to ask Coffey what he wants him to do. John Coffey replies: I'm tired. I'm tired of being alone. But mostly ... I'm tired of people being ugly to each other. The movie then flashes forward to Paul Edgecombe, now a hundred and eight years old telling his female companion of his curse in life. He is cursed to watch all his loved ones die. An eye for an eye........』

(HAVE YOU TRIED MR. COFFEY?)
『An exceptional movie, combining the literary genius of Stephen King, augmented by the acting of Tom Hanks and an array of talented role players, led by Mr. Coffey,(Michael Duncan). A towering figure of a man, Cofffey is a faith healer in the truest non- denominational definition of the word. Even on the green mile (death row,1935), he continues to reach out, curing Hanks, the warden's wife, and bringing a pet mouse back to life. He also has the powers to allow others to see that he is a good man, plus the capability of removing the two biggest scoundrels in the film with comparative ease. (Never underestimate the talents of those who play key secondary roles such as the hateable barracks officer (Doug Hutchison); his may be the hardest part in the movie to play well). In the end, Coffey wants badly to die; he's literally FELT hatred for his entire life, and wishes to escape it for a better place.Tears on the guards' faces indicate the power he's held over them,up until and after his electrocution.R.I.P.』

(Much better than I thought it would be yet not as great as some would have you believe...)
『I honestly didn't think I would like this movie at all. I'm not a huge fan of Tom Hanks. He's impressed me a few times before but honestly I can't think of a time when he's ever `wowed' me. I am not a fan of Stephen King in that I never really have given him a try. Aside from `Misery' I have never read any of his novels. I have seen a few of the film adaptations and enjoyed them but I have also seen some of his adaptations and thought they were dreadful so really it's a mixed bag for me. I decided to give this a chance only because a friend of mine raved it, and it has received high amounts of praise from the critics and have I mentioned yet that it was nominated for Best Picture of the Year at the Academy Awards so with that in mind I decided to sit down and watch this, finally.

The film follows the effect one falsely accused man has on the prison guards in charge over him. This man is John Coffey, an extremely large black man accused of raping and murdering two young girls. Despite his immense size Coffey appears to be a very kind soul. This is noticed by one of the guards, Paul Edgecomb. Getting to know John, Paul realizes that he is, without a doubt, innocent but the evidence against him is surmountable and it appears that his execution is eminent.

While this is the main storyline for `The Green Mile' there is so much more to uncover, and there should be since the film is three hours long. I've read a while back that the character of John Coffey was modeled after Jesus Christ and this makes perfect sense when you watch this film and analyze it. John's `powers' are very similar to the ones heaped upon Jesus and John's predicament is also one similar to that of Christ. Everyone has turned on John except for a few men who put faith in his power to heal. He is wrongfully accused of a crime he did not commit and sentenced to death by the men he was trying to protect. It's something I did not expect to come from Stephen King, that's for sure, but then again I've never given him a fair chance...maybe I should.

The performances in this film also elevate the material, especially that of Michael Clarke Duncan who delivers a performance so solid and so tempered that without it the film would have failed. He is, with all due respect, the heart and soul of this film. Tom Hanks surprised me by delivering an outstandingly tender performance. It may actually be his best performance to date. Patricia Clarkson sizzles in what little screen time she has as does Bonnie Hunt and David Morse and Barry Pepper do their best to stand out amidst powerful performances by James Cromwell and more notably Doug Hutchison who plays the `evil' Percy Wetmore. Sam Rockwell is as disturbing as they come and the revelation of his character will chill you.

Like I said in my title for this review, it is far better than I assumed it would be but it still was not as grand as some have suggested. There are moments where the melodramatic feel doesn't quite mesh right and there are some scenes that tend to drag a bit. I'm not saying that the length is a problem for it enables the audience to truly sink into the mood of the film but there are some scenes that could have been trimmed. It is not one of my top five films of 1999, nor one of my top ten, but it rests well with my honorable mentions. It is not as disturbing as `Carrie' and not as meaningful as `The Shawshank Redemption' but it rest nicely in the middle and delivers solid and gratifying entertainment.』

『Oscar nomimated best picure adaptation of a Stephen King novel about a gentle giant of a prisoner with supernatural powers, who brings a sense of spirit and humanity to his guards and fellow inmates. Oscar award winning actor Tom Hanks heads the cast in this emotionally riveting story.』

(Insulting Romantic "Comedy")
『I cannot believe how many women actually like this movie. I found it insulting that the audience could believe that there exists a professional woman in NYC completely obsessed with everything that is shallow about weddings in such a way that she has time to attend/coordinate them and be so close to 27 brides that she gets asked to be in their wedding party. Not only is the romantic plot hard to believe, a man who has been so harshly cynical about weddings, and possibly marriage itself, falls for a woman that is marriage and wedding-crazy (because I guess men secretly adore women who are desperate to get married), but it also has the most ludicrous scenes between the "lovers"!

The worst scene, in my opinion, was the one where she tries all the dresses for him, complete with hair and make-up (Was he in her apartment for days?). At this point she barely knows him, doesn't trust him, she acts like she's embarrassed by the dresses, but she happily models for this stranger anyway? It doesn't make any sense. And even less sense that a man would be entertained by this. The whole courtship seems forced, not natural at all.

Also unbelievable, the "relationship" that grows between the sister and the boss. How could a supposed intelligent, self-made man fall for a total air-head? He couldn't tell she wasn't really a vegetarian or liked to hike after a few weeks of dating? Why would the sister like him so much she's willing to lie about such basic stuff anyway? What a waste of Edward Burns.

The only reason I watched this movie was because I loved "the Devil Wears Prada" and this is from the same screenwriter. What a difference. Whereas "Devil" embraces the complexities of trying to keep a professional job and balance an actual relationship, this movie barely touches on anything that could possibly motivate the characters to do what they do or even "love" who they love.

Sometimes it feels like they make these movies for teenagers and not for adults: People in professional jobs act anything but, relationships are extremely shallow, and couples fall in "love" just because.

I'm all for romantic escapism, but I have my stupidity limits.

(Looking forward to a sequel, 54 Dresses)
『Katherine Heigl is worth every penny they pay her, for she manages to make palatable even the twist in the plot which forces her to unleash thirty years of fury at her family... I won't say how, but most any other actress would have brought the movie down with her at that point, for it is truly an ugly revelation. But somehow Heigl manages to retain the audience's sympathy.

Did I miss something, or was there really no answer to Malcolm asking Jane how she was able to afford to go to so many weddings (he mentions the airfare alone would have blown the budget for many women at Jane's career level.) She sort of brushes him off, but I expected some sort of payoff about this question, for it was just unbelievable. Don't you love when glamorous Tess comes to her sister's apartment straight from Milan, and she looks in and gushes about how cute and tiny it is! The two actresses make that scene work for the moment, but then on to later reels of the movie where it turns out that Jane has New York's biggest apartment! Well, nearly so, I think the title for the biggest apartment still belongs to the one that Hilary Swank and Gerald Butler (who were also supposed to be struggling New Yorkers) lived in at the beginning of PS I LOVE YOU, the last chick flick I watched.

Edward Burns was OK, but I imagine his casting was the result of some free association down at the casting office. "OK, his name is GEORGE... let's get BURNS..." for otherwise he was not that good. As for James Marsden, he's cute in a way, a little fellow, but now so alarmingly thin that every bone in his face sticks out, not just his cheekbones but bones you were never meant to see. Throw a hat at him, throw ten hats like a hat rack, that boney face of his will catch them all.』

(Love, love, LOVE THIS MOVIE!)
『I saw this movie in theatres and absolutely fell in love with it. I couldn't wait for it to come out on DVD so I could watch it again. A girl who doesn't know how to say 'no'; A sister who is so completely self-involved that she doesn't care to notice that her sister is in love with the guy she hooks up with; and a guy who is a cynic on the outside but a total romantic when he meets the right girl. I laughed and cried. Katherine Heigel and James Marsden are amazing...I love them. The "Benny and the jets"/bar scene is my absolute favorite, i think it's so cute. I Highly highly recommend this movie.』

(Even if you're NOT a "chick...")
『Not "Godfathers" I, II or even III, but an enjoyable flick! Heigl is thoroughly charming, and the soundtrack is TERRIFIC. Evidently, however, the producers of the film didn't wish to pay royalties to all of the recording artists, so there's no CD of it. Most of the songs appear to be downloadable...』

『Katherine Heigl (Knocked up, TV's Grey's Anatomy) lights up the screen in this charming romantic comedy from the screenwriter of The Devil Wears Prada." Heigl stars as Jane, a romantic, completely selfless woman who has been a bridesmaid in no less than 27 weddings. Unfortunately her own happy ending seems to be nowhere in sight. Until her younger sister Tess captures the heart of Jane's boss -- on whom Jane has a secret crush inspiring Jane to change her "always-a-bridesmaid" destiny.』
『Katherine Heigl is delightful as Jane, a self-effacing Gal Friday so addicted to organizing weddings in her off time, that27 Dressesopens with her character juggling two nuptials on the same night. A perpetual bridesmaid, Jane’s hobby is discovered by a matrimony reporter named Kevin (James Marsden), who hides a romantic side behind his wall of cynicism. While Kevin gradually develops feelings for Jane, the latter’s superficial sister, Tess (Malin Akerman), pursues George (Edward Burns), Jane’s boss and the objectof her love. This romantic circle could go on forever, except that Jane is unexpectedly moved by Kevin despite her general irritation with him and without knowing that he’s on the verge of sandbagging her with a ridiculing article in his newspaper. The situation is absurd, but the emotions are not. Heigl is very good, rooted in a long tradition of comely comediennes playing characters who fly under the radar of life. She makes Jane’s pain palpable and conveys her character’s inability to say no without making her look unappealing or weak. Marsden perfectly captures the part of a rumpled, underdressed writer with repressed passions, Akerman is as convincingly shrewish here as she was inThe Heartbreak Kid, and Burns is fine as one of those guys so busy saving the world he barely pays attention to the people in his life. The script by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) is fun if predictable, and Anne Fletcher’s direction is vibrant. --Tom Keogh
