Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Can't BELIEVE I'm Saying This--Better Than the Book) 『I started watching this with very low expectations. I figured it would be based on the fourth book, and I hated the fourth book, so, you know, not all that excited. I came out of it a totally happy person. It seems to me that the screenwriter took everything that was wrong with the fourth book and fixed it. True, I would have liked to see Win, but that's, imo, the only thing the movie really lacked. The acting was great, the chemistry was astounding (and here everyone was saying the girls didn't want to do this!), the storylines, amazing amazing amazing. Upon reading book 4, I was highly disappointed that they lost the pants, but now, watching the movie, I see why it had to happen. Random comments: -Alexis Bledel makes a much better Lena than a Rory. She's so much more natural as a quiet, down-to-earth girl, rather than Ms. Spoiled Rotten. -LOVED Amber Tamblyn's acting, she's been the best part of both movies. Her and Brian are just too cute, and her 'miracle' moment was probably my favorite of the entire movie. -Glad they kept Labor Coach Tibby in! -Best lines? Tie between "And leave me in the middle of my life? God!" and "We are terrible at not loving each other." One hilarious, one sweet, both pretty much summarizing the entirety of this movie and real life. I am not the type to EVER prefer a movie adaptation over a book. I always think the movies cheapen the written word. This is the one exception. Loved it, loved it, LOVED it.』
(FOUR TISSUES AND A NICE CHICK FLICK) 『I enjoyed the movie. I have read all the Sisterhood books, and I am 40+. The movie and books are geared for teenage girls and young adults, but I enjoy them too. I think any woman that has best friends growing up and still has best friends will relate to this movie and enjoy it. I thought the Second movie was better than the first movie. I liked the location footage in Greece, NYC and Yale. Remember to bring your tissues and maybe a glass of wine if your of age and enjoy!』
(Good Clean Fun) 『Okay, so maybe I'm not the target demographic for this film. I don't care. I enjoyed it anyway. The main thing going for it is that Bledel, Tamblyn, Lively, and Ferrera have great chemistry together. They are consistently engaging and genuinely funny. Of course, like action movies, the plot has a habit of getting in the way of the fun, but in the last quarter of the film the four of them are together and deliver the best moments.
There are also some fine performances from rest of the cast. You've got Lucy Hale as Lena's idiot kid sister. (BTW, Hale handles this role much better than Bledel did in Bride and Prejudice, but I'd love to see her cast in something outside of this mold.) You've got Rachel Nichols as acting Carmen's friend/nemesis. As Bridget's supervisor at a Turkish archaeolgical dig, Shohreh Aghdashloo shows once again why she is Hollywood's go-to actress for a strong middle eastern woman. And you've got Blythe Banner as Bridget's grandmother from Alabama. On the male side, you've got reformed Dragon's Lair addict Brian (suddenly sporting washboard abs) as Tibby's guy, Ian as Carmen's British acting foil, and Lena's twin boy-toys, ex-boyfriend Kostas and model Leo. When you combine the stars, the rest of the cast, and the picturesque scenes of Santorini, there is a lot of eye candy, probably something for everyone.
On the downside, the DVD special features are a little on the skimpy side. There are a couple of deleted scenes, none of which are earthshattering. There is a gag reel, but most of the gags are flubbed lines, not too exciting either. There is a brief vignette on the "cliff scene". And you can watch the film dubbed in Spanish or French with or without subtitles. I guess the stars were too busy to deliver more like with the last movie. That's okay. The bottom line is that the film is worth watching. It is good clean fun. (By the way, the PG-13 rating is absurd. This is far tamer than Gossip Girl or even Ugly Betty.)』
(One word: Amazing.) 『I won't sit here and go into this big looooong speech about how amazing the movie is and how each part affected me. I'll just simple say that, the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series are what "true" friendships should be like. Good times or bad, they stick by one another. You can learn so much just from watching the movies. I'll admit I cried my eyes out during the movie, but I also laughed my butt off. This movie is definitely worth seeing but even more to buy. Any of a better review then that, I'd be shocked. =] I hope you'll BUY/watch.』
(widescreen) 『While I love the movie I just spent several hours being suprised by the a-typical letterboxing of the movie. While it is widescreen it is more like the letterboxing they put on certain tv shows as viewed on television. I would have rather had a more noticable widescreen representation. It's a beautiful movie but the sweeping views have a good chance of being cut out when you don't get the full picture you saw in the movie theatre.』 『Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 11/18/2008 Run time: 119 minutes Rating: Pg13』 『Ever wonder what the girls ofSex and the Citymight have been like if they'd been friends since toddlerhood? Probably a lot like the appealing friends inThe Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, the winsome sequel to the winning 2005 film based, as is this film, on the novels of Ann Brashares. Tibby, Carmen, Bridget, and Lena are the Carrie, et al., of this yarn, which picks up in the girls' lives as they're launching into womanhood--figuring out "how to become ourselves without losing each other." The young women fight heartache and family trouble while seeking adventure in their first year of college and the summer after--and trading off a pair of what must surely be the best-traveled garment in the history of Hollywood. All the young actresses have become more famous since the first film--especiallyUgly BettyEmmy winner America Ferrera (Carmen), but also Blake Lively (Bridget), Amber Tamblyn (Tibby), and Alexis Bleidel (Lena). But the film is very much an ensemble piece as all four young stars trade off their piece in the spotlight. Adventures take them to far-flung locales like Rhode Island, New York, and an archeological dig in Turkey, and the adventures and friendship continue across the miles. Above all? The Sisterhood, of course. Tibby, over lunch: "I suck at relationships. I should have been a guy." Lena: "Nah, a guy wouldn't worry about sucking at relationships." And suddenly, sisters, everything seems right in the world. --A.T. Hurley』

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (A Moving Film With a Message) 『El Ultimo Tren is a great film - a moving story, with excellent directing and acting. After viewing so much Hollywood thoroughfare, it was uplifting to see a film with a real human and social message, yet not delivered in a heavy-handed, ideological fashion. At one level, it is a deeply moving story of friends venturing on a risky journey together to protest the intended sale of a national treasure - a railroad engine, symbol of an entire nation's patrimony. The excellent script and acting capture the depths of human friendships, with the presence of the boy symbolizing the intergenerational dimension of the issues involved. At another level, it is about the struggle to maintain national identity in the face of a system where everything is put up for sale. I really cannot say too much in praise of this excellent film. My wife and I watched it twice in a row. After viewing it the first time, every other film we had rented seemed shallow and insigificant. Anyone looking for a good film, outside the mainstream of Hollywood thoroughfare, should see this excellent film. The acting is so much better than what one sees in Hollywood. This film is a true work of art. Five stars.』
(A charming movie from Uruguay) 『In Spanish with subtitles, Ultimo Tren is about a group of older men who relive the ideals of their youth and try to save an old steam locomotive -- part of the country's national heritage -- from being shipped off to Hollywood. A great character piece about the relationships between the men. No blood, violence, or sex... just a good story.』

(Widescreen v. full) 『Just to offer my two cents, now that both versions are on DVD:
Regardless of what aspect ratio it was originally shot in, the full-screen version is indeed pan&scan. I now have both. If you compare the two, you'll see the newer widescreen DVD is not missing any of the picture from the top or bottom. It is the full-screen that is indeed missing the sides. I never saw it in the theater, so I can't say how it was originally projected. Either way, it's one of the best films ever (way better than Citizen Kane), so watch it however you want and enjoy.』
(The Ultimate Con) 『This movie ranks up there as one of the best films ever made and stands up well over the years.
Robert Redford, Paul Newman and Robert Shaw (who I always think of being an underated actor and the performance here and in Jaws show how great he was) all bring A-List performances to the movie.
The cinematography and look of the film adds to the atmosphere and is brilliant, while "The Entertainer" by Joplin adds to the feel of the movie.
And of course there is the plot itself. The planning, twists and turns of the con of the conman stand up on repeat viewings and letting some time pass between the viewings helps make the nuances stand up on repeat viewings regardless of whether you are able to remember the overall plot or conclusion - in other words it is one of the films that you can see over and over.
Highly recommended.』

It is also a movie with a lot of love (even to different species who in the past were natural "enemies"), and a good lesson in tolerance for ALL our differences. Great movie for every one to watch and enjoy!』 『Studio: Buena Vista Home Video Release Date: 05/16/2008 Run time: 93 minutes Rating: G』 『The folks at Pixar can do no wrong withMonsters, Inc., the studio's fourth feature film, which stretches the computer animation format in terms of both technical complexity and emotional impact. The giant, blue-furred James P. I have the Limited Collector's Edition, with the digital copy... the only thing is I can't get the digital copy without the 25 digit authorization code! I can't seem to find it... anybody else experiencing the same thing?』
(wish I'd known what to expect) 『I didn't know much of what to expect--just that it was a historical war movie.
I tell you this so you'll understand why I was underwhelmed for the first quarter of the movie. The monochromatic filming, mostly in sepia tones, but then occasionally in blues, got pretty irritating. And then there was the Heroic Music and the Ominous Music trying to get me all excited or worried about characters I didn't even know yet. And that was really irritating.
It starts off with voice-over narration and a little boy going off to be trained as a Spartan warrior. Complete with a weird-looking CGI wolf. I couldn't figure out why they couldn't use a real wolf. Lots of scrawny kid skulking around being shadowed by a goofy looking wolf with the dramatic music. In sepia.
Truthfully, I was tempted it to the males and go off to the computer or a book.
But it's a good thing I kept watching. Once the boy grew up, he became King Leonidas (Gerard Butler). Xerxes of Persia invades, and Leonidas goes to the Oracle to get... well, basically to get permission to repel the invasion. But the priests are paid off and they advise against it. So Leonidas takes 300 men for a walk.
There's intrigue back home as the Queen tries to send reinforcements, but mostly, it's battle scenes. The fighting did really remind me of the Alerans in Captain's Fury (Codex Alera, Book 4)--the shieldwall type of fighting and the disciplined soldiers were very familiar.
The cinematography continues, with the colored filters and a somewhat dizzying switching between slow motion and fast forward. Here's where knowing what I was getting into might have helped. I've since discovered that 300 is based on a graphic novel that's based on a movie that's based on history. And then it made sense--the cinematography gave it that stylish, surrealistic feel that fits with the graphic novel.
It also made the violence much easier to take for this squeamish viewer.
So, 4 stars, but if I'd known what to expect, I'd probably have enjoyed it a half-star more.』
(I loved this movie) 『I originally had to view this movie for a history class on history on film. This movie blew me away. You have to keep in mind that it is based on a comic book so the coloring and graphics are going to look exactly like a graphic novel, which is actually one of the best parts because it is so unique. The movie is a little gory but that's because it is depicting one of the most famous battles of Ancient Greece. The acting is amazing. Also, while you are watching it, you can see a lot of intentional parallels with America and its involvement in the war in Iraq. When the Spartan Queen goes before her "congress" she speaks about how the war is being fought for all the reasons America goes to war. So this movie is actually oddly relevant.
This movie will have you rooting for the 300 spartans and will have you on the edge of your seat. It is non-stop action and fairly historically accurate. It also follows the graphic novel to a "T". I highly recommend this for any history fans, graphic novel fans, and fans of war&actions movies. Word of warning, it is a little graphic and there is a scene where the King and Queen of Sparta are "intimate" so it is not for young viewers.』
(Great Visuals, Over-the-Top Performances) 『"300 - The Limited Collector's Edition" is a deluxe repackaging of the feature film with mountains of bonus extras. The plot focuses on the Battle of Thermopylae, when armies of the Persian Empire were hot to conquer Sparta. The macho Spartans have been indoctrinated since birth to never surrender, never retreat. King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) leads 300 of his bravest men to lure the Persians into a narrow gorge where the enemy's huge numbers will be of no advantage. However, traitors are working to undermine Sparta's attempt to maintain its independence. Based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller ("Sin City"), "300" is a bloody movie filled with over-the-top, intense images and a stylized manner of acting in which performers are given to shout and bluster, delivering every line as if it were vitally significant. This tends to get tired pretty quickly. But the movie is fun, if only for the wild visuals combining live action and CGI animation and the film's muted color palette. In its clear demarcation between good and evil, "300" is hardly subtle and in many ways is a throwback to films of the 1950's when the audience knew from the get-go that the star was the one to root for. This is simple story-telling embellished with breathtaking visuals, the true attraction of the movie. The Limited Collector's Edition contains the previously released two-disc Special Edition along with the new documentary, "To the Hot Gates: A Legend Retold," a look at the process the filmmakers followed to take a graphic novel's treatment of an ancient legend and realize it as a feature film. There are also a digital copy of the movie, a 52-page hardcover art book, a lucite display with motion film image, and six photo cards.』
(Lame lame lame) 『I went to this movie with few expectations. From the previews, I expected no more than a random, brutal, and stylized action flick, but it still didn't impress. The movie replaced half of the would-be action and violence with a steriotypical story about a soldier giving his life for his family. The movie shoulv'e at least mellowed out the overly-dramatic and soap-opera like emotional dialogue, because it didn't work out very well with the overall presentation of the film. As far as the stylized action goes, the computer-generated blood looks cool as swords impact flesh, but every drop of blood dissapears before it reaches the edge of the screen .Noone wasnts to see an awesome blood spurt fly through the air, and then quickly fade into nothing. This was just downright lame. All of the soldiers would come out of battle clean and blood-spatter free. This is in no way nearly as good as Sin City. Lastly, the movie doesn't feel either visceral nor intense, just clean and full of disapearing blood effects. The movie comes off as lame and cheesy. Rent it first.』 『The epic graphic novel by Frank Miller (Sin City) assaults the screen with the blood, thunder and awe of its ferocious visual style faithfully recreated in an intense blend of live-action and CGI animation. Retelling the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, it depicts the titanic clash in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and his massive Persian army. Experience history at swordpoint. And moviemaking with a cutting edge.』 『LikeSin Citybefore it,300brings Frank Miller and Lynn Varley's graphic novel vividly to life. Gerard Butler (Beowulf and Grendel,The Phantom of the Opera) radiates pure power and charisma as Leonidas, the Grecian king who leads 300 of his fellow Spartans (including David Wenham ofThe Lord of the Rings, Michael Fassbender, and Andrew Pleavin) into a battle against the overwhelming force of Persian invaders. Their only hope is to neutralize the numerical advantage by confronting the Persians, led by King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), at the narrow strait of Thermopylae.
More engaging thanTroy, the tepid and somewhat similar epic of ancient Greece,300is also comparable toSin Cityin that the actors were shot on green screen, then added to digitally created backgrounds. The effort pays off in a strikingly stylized look and huge, sweeping battle scenes. However, it's not as to-the-letter faithful to Miller's source material asSin Citywas. The plot is the same, and many of the book's images are represented just about perfectly. But some extra material has been added, including new villains (who would be considered "bosses" if this were a video game, and it often feels like one) and a political subplot involving new characters and a significantly expanded role for the Queen of Sparta (Lena Headey). While this subplot by director Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead) and his fellow co-writers does break up the violence, most fans would probably dismiss it as filler if it didn't involve the sexy Headey. Other viewers, of course, will be turned off by the waves of spurting blood, flying body parts, and surging testosterone. (The six-pack abs are also relentless, and the movie has more and less nudity--more female, less male--than the graphic novel.) Still, as a representation of Miller's work and as an ancient-themed action flick with a modern edge,300delivers.--David Horiuchi』

(Inspiring Interest in a Future Believer) 『This DVD production of the Joseph&The Coat of Many Colors story has accomplished exactly what I had hoped for my 3yr old son: an interest in learning about the Lord and His involvement in the lives of those who trust Him. My son often recites (in surprising detail) various scenes from the tale. One of my fellow brothers in Christ calls my son "The Little Preacher" because my son enjoys capturing the attention of those around him so he can retell the story of Joseph&The Coat of Many Colors. I understand some reviewing this telling of the story may prefer stricter adherence to various nuances and literary exactness from Scripture - I can appreciate that as I am a literal believer of Scripture. There is never a perfect retelling of any Biblical story that will appeal to everyone's preference. As already mentioned, this achieved what I had hoped for my son: help him develop an interest in learning about the Lord, building a faith in the Lord, and forgiving those who wrong him.』
(quality biblical "edutainment" for the whole family) 『This is my favorite story in Genesis. This cartoon version is just perfect for kids or adults. The story is first introduced by Charlton Heston. If the kids start looking around for other things to do, don't worry.
