(A perfect version of the classic -- and very human.)
『Nana: My grandmother, Anne Gillis

The star: George C. Scott was an icon; legendary American stage and film actor, director, and producer, perhaps best known for his Academy Award-winning portrayal of General George S. Patton Jr. in the film Patton. He was, quite simply, one of the finest actors of his (or any other) generation. An actor who often played gruff and harsh roles, Scott was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor for his portrayal in A Christmas Carol.

Scott's interpretation of Scrooge is spot-on. His Scrooge is a complex human being and as the story unfolds the viewer sees WHY he became so bitter and cynical in his old age, and for (perhaps) the first time an actor playing Scrooge successfully portrays the REGRETS the character has. His Scrooge feels REAL. He takes familiar dialogue and makes it seem spontaneous and fresh. He face, his movements, his words, all convey the emotion the man feels - and he does feel. His ultimate transformation seems believable: This is a man who has closed his heart to love to feeling, and finally realizes what he's lost. Scott is brilliant as Scrooge.

Ebenezer Scrooge: [Sitting under the bridge after the Ghost of Christmas Present leaves] "What have I done... to be abandoned like this? What?"

The Cast: The entire cast is wonderful. No role is miscast. In addition, many of the actors are British, so the mannerisms and accents and use of language seem natural. The acting is believable, making characters in an all-too familiar story seem REAL and full of life.

David Warner's Bob plays just the right balance of timid clerk and loving husband/father. Susanna York (who will always be "Lara" to me), is pitch-perfect as Mrs. Cratchit. There's a nice scene where Bob Cratchit and his wife kiss under the mistletoe and hug lovingly. This version shows that that are not just parents but a couple who love each other very much.

The Cratchit children are not overly sugary but just seem like nice kids. I like when Mrs. Cratchit tells one of the children to go butter the brad and she adds, "Thinly." Tiny Tim is sickly looking, but not overplayed as the over-the-top doomed child.

Roger Rees as Fred is very good, and the casting directors actually made an effort to cast Scrooge's sister Fan and Fred resembling each other. Rees's Fred is just a little too reserved for me, but that may be a directorial choice to contrast him with his Uncle Ebenezer.

Frank Finlay (Marley's Ghost), performance is incredible; you really believe he is filled with regret for his lot. Finlay plays the role as just a bit crazy, just a bit over the top emotional; which is perfect for Jacob Marley.

The Ghost of Christmas past is wonderful; Angela Pleasence conveys just the right balance of teacher/reminder and clear contempt for Ebenezer. What's interesting in this version is that the ghosts have obvious disdain for Scrooge - and aren't afraid to show it. When Christmas Past is departing as Scrooge insanely screams, "Leave me," she smiles wickedly. But she also prods him, sometimes gently:

[Christmas past and Scrooge are watching his past self dance with his great love, Belle:]
Christmas Past: "How long since you danced, Ebenezer?"
Scrooge: "Waste of time."
Christmas Past: "You didn't think so then."
Scrooge: "The was a REASON then."

GREAT writing. GREAT characterization. Honest regret over choices made and not made.

Edward Woodward as the Ghost of Christmas Present is exceptional. He is full of life and humor, sarcastic when he needs to be, and he also doesn't hide his disapproval of Scrooge. He is bombastic at times, commanding, powerful, and a man (ghost) on a mission. He is enjoying his torment of Scrooge. I get the feeling he really doesn't care whether Scrooge repents or not.

[Scrooge, observing the Cratchit's meal:]
Scrooge: "It's a very small goose."
Christmas Present: "It's all Bob Cratchit can afford."

And when the ghost reminds Scrooge of his "decrease the surplus population" comment he is positively venomous as he snarls, ""It may be that in the sight of Heaven you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man's child!" It's familiar dialogue but man, this ghost is seething when he says it.

Throughout the film, many of the actors communicate with facial expressions rather than words. A good actor can pull this off brilliantly. There are many such examples in this film: Scrooge's look of confusion when he sees Marley. Young Ebenezer's look of sadness and regret when he knows he'll never please his father. And so much more.

The film itself:

Thee entire movie is VERY faithful to the original story. It was filmed on location in Shrewsbury, England, giving it an authenticity not found in other adaptations. The costumes are perfect. The attention to detail is meticulous. Nothing looks like a "set," All the places - the homes, the markets, the offices, look real. The scenes of commerce at the exchange, the frenzied shopping at the market on Christmas morning, the bustling city - it looks and sounds very real.

The foggy, dreary London described in the Dickens story is very well created here. The streets where Scrooge walks to his home are dark and creepy.

The majority of the special effects are conveyed by traditional stage effects with smoke, and lighting. It's all very effective.

The scene at the when the horses and Marley's funeral carriage pass by - we see it but Scrooge doesn't - creepy.

Marley's makeup, lighting and clothing -- all a deathly blue - is well done.

The transitions from one scene to the next during the time-travel are unique to each ghost - the cap Christmas Past holds reflects each scene as we transition from one time to the next. Christmas Present's torch bridges one sequence to the next scene, and Christmas future transitions each scene with a loud crash and brilliant flash of lightning.

And in each of Scrooge's visions of the future, after he witnesses the scene the lights dim and only a spotlight effect remains on him - almost like standing alone on a stage. It's a very effective presentation. The Ghost of Christmas yet to come first appears as spotlight shines on him in the distance, and it is conveyed mostly through shadows of hands and hoods. It's all very well done.

Liberties with the story (all good):

As Scrooge takes his cold gruel by the unlit fireplace, he sniffles, a reminder that (in the story) Scrooge had a head cold.

I love it when Scrooge adds his own "Amen" to the Cratchit's Christmas prayer.

We see several scenes of Scrooge conducting his commodity trading business at the exchange. Scrooge is clearly recognized as a man of business and is deferred to as such, but a hard businessman with no compassion or room for negotiation.

The Ghost of Christmas present doesn't age and fade away in this version - he laughs at Scrooge and abandons him outside in unknown territory.

We finally meet Scrooge's father in this version - he's a cold man, a mean spirited old bastard. He does not love his son -We learn that Scrooge's mother died giving birth to him and Silus Scrooge holds a grudge against his son because of it. This makes the characters seem much more real. Also, I think this is one of the few versions where Fan is older than Ebenezer.

There are dozens upon dozens of memorable scenes in this film, but my favorite is the end -- in this version, it's clear that Scrooge is a man whose newfound joy is tempered by remorse. Not only is his intention to make things right in the present and future, but to apologize for his past behaviors. His apology to his nephew is here an integral part of the story--it is heartfelt. And it works.

Scrooge: "Well, I've come for three reasons. The first is to beg your pardon. [What I said about Christmas] THAT was a humbug, Fred."

He goes on to meet Fred's wife Janet and says, "I, uh, I was in love once. Can you believe that?"

Janet: "Yes."

Scrooge: "But I had neither the courage nor the conviction that you two share."

He then reminds Fred how much he resembles his sister Fan and adds, "I loved your mother, Fred. For a time I'd forgotten how much."

And finally Scrooge says, "My God forgive me for the time I've wasted."

Summary: An outstanding adaptation of the story with a perfect cast, believable, flesh and blood characters and meticulously detailed sets and streets. A perfect Scrooge and a larger-than-life stage, an adapt ion that takes a very familiar story and makes it feel fresh, and real. I HIGHLY recommend this Christmas classic.

『Great service and was so happy to have found this dvd I have searched
high and low for. Price was delightful.』

(Fun for the whole family.)
『This is by far the best version of 'A Christmas Carol'. George C. Scott is Scrooge, and he brings to the role a depth of feeling and sincerity not seen in other versions. Fun for the whole family. We look forward to it every Christmas season, and it never gets old.』

(On behalf of my Pops)
『My dad is not an amazon member nor is he computer savvy. But he loves this movie and if I remember correctly, it's his favorite in the world. he likes other adaptations of the story but this is hands-down his favorite.』

(The best version by far)
『I have always enjoyed this version of A Christmas Carol. It is great for kids, not too scary. It is a Christmas tradition. My daughter received a role in a stage production in our town because she watched it and loved it so much.』
『Christmas elicits nothing more than "Bah, humbug!" from Ebenezer Scrooge (Scott), a miser whose sole pursuit of financial success has left him a bitter and lonely old man. But a Christmas Eve visit from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future ultimately teaches him to open his heart to the spirit of Christmas and to the joys of friends and family.』
『In the same year that he directed a handsome version ofThe Scarlet Pimpernelfor television, Clive Donner also made this worthy 1984 small-screen production of the Dickens tale. George C. Scott can't quite muster a decent English accent, but he does bring some new colors to this movie's interpretation of Scrooge, making the character less nasty for the sake of nastiness and more a product of a life of lovelessness. The supporting cast is first-rate, and the production is far more handsome than most TV fare.--Tom Keogh

『Why put the first 14 episodes into this to be release on Dec 30 when the final 8 episodes of season 5 are to be aired beginning Jan 6, 09? Seems to me they could wait a few month to put them all together rather than having a part 1 and 2 for season 5 as so many other tv series have done recently... sopranos, entourage, etc.

Disappointing that we are only going to get 8 episodes in Jan 09 then have to wait till Jan 2010 for next season, and Jan 2011 for final season...』

(Hollywood Babylon)
『The fifth season of Nip/Tuck finds Sean (Dylan Walsh) and Christian (Julian McMahon) setting up their practice in the most synthetic town on the planet: Hollywood. It takes a while for things to take off, which they do when Sean and Christian end up stumbling into playing parts on a TV medical drama, and contending with its egotistic star (Midnight Meat Train's Bradley Cooper) while Sean romances its female lead (Paula Marshall). There's some inventive twists that are abound, including the downward spiral that Matt (John Hensley) and Kimber (Kelly Carlson) are on, and Julia's (Joely Richardson) surprising new realationship. There's pivotal guest star roles from Portia de Rossi, John Schneider, and sexy AnnaLynne McCord, and Nip/Tuck still manages to be entertaining five seasons in, even though this season just simply isn't as good as previous seasons of the series. Still, there's a cliffhanger ending that will have you salivating for more to come, and here's hoping that Nip/Tuck will continue to deliver the goods.』

(Not the NIP TUCK we all knew)
『I to was deeply dissappointed in Season 5. The writers need to bring the series back to it orginal style. Many of the storylines seemed incomplete to me and unbelievable. I will say that Sharon Gless had done a great job playing the nutty so called manager of Sean. Emmy worthy as well, I guess for me it did not pack the punch NIP Tuck usually has. Shame to since it was one of my guilty pleasures.』

『I have always been a big fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas and owned it for years on DVD. Having said that, the difference between the DVD and Blu Ray are tremendous. The blacks are blacker, colors more vibrant and the audio is amazing.

(The Nightmare Before Christmas)
『Tim Burton has created a masterpiece with The Nightmare Before Christmas.
In the Blu-Ray Format you see the amazing amount of detail that has been painstakingly built into this movie. The color and shadings are more impressive than it has ever been seen in Theaters. The depth looks very
much like the 3D film that was re-released last year. The over all look
including color depth exceeds the 3D version. This is a must own for collectors who want to show off there home theater.』

『Now digitally restored and remastered with state-of-the-art technology, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS is deeper, darker and more brilliant than ever just as Tim Burton originally envisioned it on Blu-ray Disc Bored with the same old scare-and-scream routine, Pumpkin King Jack Skellington longs to spread the joy of Christmas. But his merry mission puts Santa in jeopardy and creates a nightmare for good little boys and girls everywhere! Hear the genius of Danny Elfman's sensational music in 7.1 Surround Sound as the fantastic talents and imaginations of Tim Burton and Henry Selick come to life in stunning Hi-Def. Bonus Features
THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS is the first full-length stop-motion animated film ever created.
The movie contains more than 227 animated characters.

The smallest working puppet in the movie is a doll from the "real world" Jack visits that is only one inch long.
Sally is wearing a real miniature dress laid on top of foam latex so that the fabric doesn't move too much on screen.
At the height of production, the animators produced only 70 seconds of finished film per week.
To create Halloweentown's twisted look, the design artists often made their sketches using their nondrawing hand.

『For those who never thought Disney would release a film in which Santa Claus is kidnapped and tortured, well, here it is! The full title isTim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, which should give you an idea of the tone of this stop-action animated musical/fantasy/horror/comedy. It is based on characters created by Burton, the former Disney animator best known as the director ofPee-wee's Big Adventure,Beetlejuice,Edward Scissorhands, and the first twoBatmanmovies. His benignly scary-funny sensibility dominates the story of Halloweentown resident Jack Skellington (voice by Danny Elfman, who also wrote the songs), who stumbles on a bizarre and fascinating alternative universe called ... Christmastown! Directed by Henry Selick (who later made the delightfulJames and the Giant Peach), this PG-rated picture has a reassuringly light touch. As Roger Ebert noted in his review, "some of the Halloween creatures might be a tad scary for smaller children, but this is the kind of movie older kids will eat up; it has the kind of offbeat, subversive energy that tells them wonderful things are likely to happen."--Jim Emerson

『I like Disaster movies so I ordered this movie. It came fast and looks to be in great shape. I have not had time to watch the movie yet』

(Glued-to-your-seat action)
『This is one of the best action movies made for TV. When I watched this the first time, I was riveted to my seat and wondering what was going to happen next. The story and the special effects including the exploding payphone and the sparks raining from the light fixtures add to the appeal to this movie. This movie has become my second favorite sci-fi action movie next to "The Core".』

(LIGHTWEIGHT LIGHTNING)
『Another one of those made for TV disaster flicks featuring the usual characters and a rather incredulous premise. Seems like a bunch of storms are going to merge together all around the globe and predicate a new ice age. Researcher Joanna Pacula is the only one (naturally) who realizes this and most of the movie is spent with her trying to convince disbelieving faculty members and a stern general. Meanwhile we get another 15 year old genius (Pacula's son) who we know is going to come up with the solution to save the day, but not before the usual family problems, the most serious being the arrival of his real mother. Meanwhile lightning strikes a few buildings and provides about as much suspense as a carousel ride.
Moderately diverting but nothing special.』

(Lightning: Bolts of Destruction)
『I enjoyed this movie. I thought that the lightning storms were very scary and the special effects were good.

『Joanna Pacula (Gorky Park) and Nick Mancuso (Under Siege 2) star in this electrifying thriller in which the day after tomorrow has come today! A wave of violent lightning storms is wreaking havoc around the world. Brilliant university researcher Valery Landis deduces the weather has been caused by a level of sunspots the Earth has not seen for more than two million years. (Shock And Awe)
『This film was awesome. Great footage of what lead to Shock And Awe, what happened during Shock And Awe, and the after effects of Shock And Awe.
They take you inside buildings that are standing and look perfectly fine only to see the insides completely gutted. This shows the amazing precision of the USA's military.』

(Excellent National Geographic Documentary! One of their very best!!)
『The other reviewer clearly has not watched the DVD. Probably one of those Know-Nothing,Pro-: Rape-Room/Beheading/Stoning2Death/Limb-Severing/MassGrave-Filling/Kurd-Gassing/UN-Corrupting Saddam Hussein Regime, Anti-American, Anti-U.S. Military activists, who would prefer that you think of them as "peace" or "anti-war" activists. What the "Shock and Awe" DVD shows us is the amazing and humbling power and precision of America's armed forces. The Republican Palace is hit time and time again, pounded over and over again in stunning displays of American firepower. Yet once all is said and done, it is clear that the bombings were so accurate, so precise, that the building was absolutely gutted inside, but from the outside, it simply looks like they had a fire; just a bit of blackened stone by the windows. Nothing outside is disturbed to any degree. A rabid chipmunk would have been far more dangerous to innocent Iraqi civilians than American bombers.

Not only are the bombs themselves, the delivery systems, and the war planning involved all designed to MINIMIZE innocent civlilian casualties, but in fact, according to the best information available to the United States of America, the entire war from 2003 to this moment has only cost approximately 30,000 TOTAL IRAQI CASUALTIES. This includes many groups of human casualties, from regular ba'athist army units, Republican Guart units, insurgents, and domestic Iraqi terrorists to innocent civilians. Considering how amazingly precise and efficient the U.S. Military is, the vast majority of those deaths and injuries consist of those who were fighting against the amazing American Military machine. Ten to twenty thousand Saddam-era Iraqi troops were killed in the initial combat stages. Several thousand have been killed fighting against American and new Iraqi forces, and I would imagine the vast majority of innocent civilians were put in harm's way purposely by pro-Saddam Ba'athist insurgents, terrorists, and religious militias. Very few innocent civilians have actually been killed by American forces.

The display of firepower contained herein is second to none. If you ever wished you had some of the amazing footage from the Shock and Awe, along with a lengthy discussion about the planning and the campaign in general, with many interviews and an obviously large amount of research, then this DVD is for you. Enjoy!』

(A display of modern weaponry with no insights on the actual event...)
『Offers no insight on the iraqui side as to what actually went on during and after the operation. No information about iraqui casualties or how Saddam's regime was affected. No information about the targets struck. Interviews to fighters and leaders on the iraqui side would have helped. It is just propaganda on how incredible the weapons are and the damage they could inflict.』

『this is actually not bad cause it also shows in depth about the players although ankle breakers 1 had better players(steve nash, jason kidd, jason williams) its still pretty good it also has sweet crossovers with l.james and mellow when you see it, its actually not that bad after all!』

(What a disappointment)
『I love watching someone get crossed up, but this video isn't really about that. I thought I was going to get a highlight reel of ankle breaking moves: what I got was a boring video. At least half of the video is a biography of the player they are going to highlight, w/ much if it just being praise from other players. No real meat. And hell, I know about these guys, if I wanted bios on them, that's what I would have bought.

The other half is about people getting beaten off the dribble, but rare are the footage of actual slick moves, and guys left stumbling or confused. Watching a player weave through defenders, is not breaking ankles. I wanted more shoots of moves like when Dwyane Wade crossed up Eric Snow so bad he fell down. I saw that game, and they included that highlight. Most of the rest was rather boring.』

The problem with taking any popular half-hour TV show and stretching it to film length is that you fundamentally alter the formula that made the series successful. The quick pace of the TV-show gives it snap and momentum and frees it from the necessity of plot and even believable continuity.

Though the Simpsons movie manages more than a half-hours worth of clever jokes it doesn't come close to hilarity of some of the series' best episodes. The remaining time is filled with rehashed plot-lines: Marge and Homer's marital difficulties, Homer and Bart's father son difficulties, and Lisa's boy difficulties. I will say that the animation is gorgeous - easily several notches better than on TV.

For a fan of the Simpsons this is must see - but it should have been more memorable. The movie gets 4 stars - the lack of extras on the DVD is why I ended up giving it 3. A few exclusive cartoon shorts or cut animations would have be nice, but that's probably being saved for a future 'special edition'.

The Simpsonshad already ruled TV land for many years by the time they finally attempted to conquer the movie world as well. It was never any big secret that aSimpsonsmovie was in the works: Fox registered the domain name "Simpsonsmovie.com" in 1997, a full nine years before the film was finally greenlighted. When creator/producer Matt Groening’s creation finally made it to the big screen in 2007, it only turned out to be the biggest hit of the summer, raking in over $100 million gross in box-office receipts in its first week, before heading on to do over $500 million worldwide, proving that the best joke in the movie was actually played on the audience: "Why pay for something when you can see it for free?" asks Homer at the movie’s start. Naturally, all the trouble starts with him. When he adopts a pig ("Sir Oinks-A-Lot") destined for Krusty’s slaughterhouse, it triggers an environmental catastrophe, forcing the governmentto seal Springfield into a dome and destroy the city. While the family manages to escape and flee to Alaska, they eventually decide to return and help save the city in more-or-less classic Simpson fashion. As Homer’s joke about the audience shows, Groening and producer Al Jean are keenly aware that their franchise is first and foremost a TV show. Maybe a little too aware, as the movie fails to ever rise above anything more than an extended episode, and not even one of its best episodes at that. True, there are plenty of good jokes; the animation has been kicked up a notch to be particularly sharp and detailed; and there are some truly memorable moments such as Bart’s nude skateboard ride and the "Spider-Pig" song. But when the film finally materialized, the payoff for long years of anticipation turned out to be small as the movie failed to live up to its potential; it’s amusingbut not truly funny. The Simpsons Movieleaves the impression that maybe the show’s writers and producers had already spent their best ideas on the best years of the TV show. Had it been made years earlier… well, we can only wonder what could have been.--Daniel Vancini

(Favorite Christmas Movie)
『This is my all time favorite Christmas Movie. And to now get it in blu-ray it is so cool. Thanks』

(Ummmm........I haven't received this item.)
『I do not know why, but I haven't received this dvd. It has been a while, and I would like it sometime.』

(Words do not describe....)
『Words cannot describe what happens when your family sits down and watches this movie during the month of December. It doesnt have to be Christmas Eve or Christmas night, any night you happened to have free in December will do. We do it every year. And honestly every year, we hear a funny line we never heard before. We must have been laughing too hard the year before.
Every family should own this movie. Seeing it with commercials on tv isnt as good as watching it all the way through the way it was intended. This has got bo the funniest holiday movie ever made. A Christmas Story is up there and so is the original National Lampoons Vacation but there is something extra special about this one.
My wish for everyone is that they would be blessed with people to watch this movie with during the Christmas season.
My advice is skip the ties and leather wallets and buy this movie instead - it will last longer and bring more joy.

『Make merry as Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Randy Quaid and an ensemble of comedy favorites strive to gift-wrap the "perfect Christmas" for the Griswold family. The most successful of the three vacations. Year: 1989 Director: Jeremiah S. Chechik Starring: Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Randy Quaid,』
『You know exactly what you're getting inNational Lampoon's Christmas Vacation: another goofball, slapstick comedy of chaos and catastrophe with Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and family. This time, there's no traveling involved: Clark and Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo) prepare for a nice Christmas with the kids (played by none other than Juliette Lewis andRoseannestar Johnny Galecki), when their home is invaded by backwoods cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) and his brood, along with assorted other crazy and/or stuffy relatives. Complications, of course, are inevitable. The film is preceded byNational Lampoon's Vacation(1983) andNational Lampoon's European Vacation(1985) and followed byNational Lampoon's Vegas Vacation(1997).
