(Spanish Speaking America's Psychosis Conspiracy!! You've Been Warned!!)
『Usually, ripping on a film is kind of fun (despite the flood of "No" votes such behavior attracts). And rest assured; I am going to rip this as it truly deserves. However, I'm actually going to feel bad complaining about this movie for a lot of reasons. I guess I should crank up the shredder and start the ripping...

-DECENT ACTORS PLAYING DULL PEOPLE
Do you know what the basic problem is with playing people as realistically as possible? They're just damn dull!! That's right; you, me and just about everyone else in this world would make a dull movie character. That's why most films are about remarkable people or ordinary people in remarkable situations. This film has a lot of ordinary people doing a lot of nothing for about the first hour. There is lots of complaining, introspection, and driving around. Yet, these are people we've all seen or met or know. The actors actually did a very good job. The problem is the story didn't give them much to do for the first hour.

-A CLEVER STORY THAT BORED ME TO TEARS.
How's that for being conflicted? The biggest problem with this story is that all the boring and seemingly incoherent events that take place in the first three quarters of the film only have meaning during the last 5 minutes. Until then, even though I suspected it was getting to a point, I was still bored. As it turned out, all the little introspective moments and seemingly mundane events were actually building a case for mental breakdown. It was still boring.
Aside from my boredom, I really had trouble buying into the motivation for some of the people's actions and some things never do get properly explained. A guy just loses his job and his first reaction is to move from his Chicago suburban apartment into his rundown, isolated Wisconsin farm house, and his wife also thinks it's a good idea. Yea, that would cheer me up too. What about that hitchhiker? She's alive, she's dead, she's alive, she's dead... ...WTF? Trust me, that never makes sense. This is the first reason I'm sticking it to this film; Good story, bad screenplay.

-I SUSPECTED HOW IT WAS GOING TO END AFTER 20 MINUTES
I'm going to say some stuff now that could very easily spoil this movie if you are inclined to watch it. I won't say anything specific about how this ends (which is key), but just by telling you what I noticed, you may figure it out. SO BEWARE. This is a poor mans version of "High Tension" without the high tension. There, I spoiled it. If you haven't seen that particular French film (which I happen to like), then just let me say that it had a big cheating ending. You know; you couldn't know the killer because you were seeing events through the wrong eyes? "High Tension" ticked off a lot of people when it ended. "Lockout" will tick you off after the first 20 minutes and then it will tick you off again at the end. The worst ploy used was the voyeuristic mystery camera in the bushes, watching the protagonists from afar. It turns out there is nobody watching at all. That's really cheap! The funny thing is, I suspected who the killer was very early in the film. I just needed to wait and find out how they were going to explain it. It turns out they couldn't do it without cheating. This is the second reason I'm deriding this film; Cheating on a grand scale while still being predictable.

-MEANINGFUL SEX AND MEANINGLESS GORE.
Let's talk about sex, baby!! Sorry about that. Would you ever want to see yourself having sex? I wouldn't. It rarely works out as well as in the movies, visually speaking. One sex scene is like watching yourself (I would suspect). The important thing is what's going on in their minds and not in the bed. Another sex scene simply explains the mindset of a character in order to explain later events. Also, a mysterious dark couple partakes in asphyxiation-sex which surprisingly has a purpose. So, the sex scenes are full of meaning.
The gore in this film is close up and graphic. I really didn't see any sense to it at all. The implication of brutality would have done more for me. The gore here was the definition of "gratuitous". If you see no problem with that, keep in mind it really only occurs in the last 20 minutes of the film and only a couple of times.

-WHAT"S ALL THIS ABOUT SPANISH, DOC?
I'm not certain what the point of this was but every authority figure in this film was Spanish speaking. The lead character gets fired by his Spanish speaking boss for not knowing how to speak a second language which gets the ball rolling in this film. Are there a lot of Spanish speaking doctors in Wisconsin? Is all this part of the psychosis? In the end, it turns out to be some mysterious Spanish American psychosis conspiracy. You think I'm joking? I think the Director was. However, this joke was completely over (or under?) my head. Obviously, I'm not sure what he was getting at. But don't think I'm joking; it is part of this movie.

-BUT I DO FEEL BAD.
Director Ricardo Islas is a remarkable character himself. Here is a guy who made his first horror film at the age of 16. He literally hoodwinked a south-of-the-border TV station to produce his film if he got enough sponsors. Of course, he did. The funny part is, all involved agreed to make his film because they were convinced he'd never get it going. After watching his interview, I fell in love with his attitude and love for horror films. He actually did a great job making this very low budget independent horror film. He did a good job of directing his actors. He even had a very thoughtful concept. If only it could have been more interesting and less deceptive. I didn't agree with his use of gore either. I normally cut slack for low budget films, but Islas clearly knows how to use his limited resources. It's funny; I think everyone who made this film has a lot of talent. Yet, I would not recommend this film due to its lack of entertainment value and unfortunate deceptions to move the plot.

(Things are not always what they seem)
『You've got to have some patience with this one because from the beginning to the middle you are thinking how there seems to be at least two plots with holes racing here and there. Things just get more and more bizarre. This is one of those flicks you just have to take in every bit though, follow it along with attention and about the last fifteen minutes or so it starts pulling together enough with things for you to figure out just what's really going on...and if you are still wondering about some things, don't worry because the end hits you like a brick and all is revealed. It's all in the end that makes it worth it.』

(This is Horror.)
『This is Horror in every degree. Not wanting to spoil too much, I'll give ya just a taste of what your in for. Man gets fired from his job, has to move from the city to a small farm house with his wife and her sister. With no income their forced to find a very cheap and run down house some where in rural america. When they move in they start to notice that the house isn't in the best shape, but this doesn't stir them away. They still have a great sex life, and manage to make best from worst. One day the water lines are blocked and the man of the house decides to see what the problem is, he heads to the basement to fix the problem. When he sees water dripping every where, he moves in for a closer look. What he then sees is a small hole in the wall just below the leak. He decides what the hell, and sticks his hand in the hole then all of a sudden....... Like I said, I dont wanna spoil this movie. I loved it and had few flaws to it. Acting was around par level. Begining was a little slow but movie takes a huge turn. Has mystery, suspence, comedy, gore, drug abuse, sex, and a plot. I would give it 5 stars but I can't do that for a Horror flim. If ya love horror this is a must. If ya love a good thriller this is a must. If ya want some shock treatment this has it.』
『LOCKOUT is the story of an American man who gets fired when he fails to adapt to certain changes in the company where he's worked for over ten years. As a result of this, he and his family are forced to move to an old house in rural Wisconsin, where bizarre events will gradually turn their lives into nothing but hell on earth...』

(Ed Wood Strikes Back)
『Though mostly recognized for his "work" on the perennial dud Plan 9 From Outer Space, Ed Wood's prolific career creating the best-bad movies in Hollywood extended well beyond that infamous film to an entire library of B-movie classics. Bride of the Monster is one of the director's "high" points, teaming everyone's favorite architect of nightmares up with the Plan 9 dream-team, a then-living Bela Lugosi and the Super Swede, Tor Johnson.

God only knows how Wood kept wrangling a screen legend like Lugosi into doing these horrendously bad movies, but future generations will thank him for the resulting campiness and hilarity. If the thought of poor dialogue, horrendous sets and even worse editing rocks your socks, you're in for a special treat!

If you're going to buy any version of Bride of the Monster, you'd be best served by getting this particular DVD. Legend Films--friend to all B-movies--provides two versions of the film on the same disc: the original black and white version and their new, color-added version. You're welcome to take your pick of the two based on personal preference, but if you have yet to try the colorized version, you might as well indulge. When I compared the two side-by-side, I could not help but enjoy the colorized version more--it adds so much vibrancy and life to the images on screen. Maybe I've been spoiled by decades of realistic imagery in film, but I'm reticent to return to grayscale after having seen Bela, Tor and the octopus monster in their enhanced forms.』

『An all time B-movie classic explodes on the screen in all its cheesy glory! Ed Wood (Plan 9 From Outer Space) directs screen legend Bela Lugosi in a bizarre tale of a mad scientist who, along with his servant Lobo (the gigantic Swedish wrestler Tor Johnson, in a role he was born to play), attempts to create an army of superhuman mutants. Features the famous scene in which Lugosi "wrestles" with a giant rubber octopus. There are thrills (and laughs) aplenty in this enduring and endearing camp masterpiece.』

(Remembering EMS 30 Years Ago)
『There were a few episodes of Season Five that REALLY took me back. The days before paramedic engine companies, the days before EMT training was required for state firefighter certification, days before automated defibrilators were common practice, and of course the days before the cell phone. If you came on the scene after 1990, please watch in particular these episodes:

1) The Stewardess - This was made in 1975, before airplanes had an AED on board (my old department got their first AED in 1991). Roy and Johnny are returning to Los Angeles from Sacramento, and a man had a heart attack on the plane. Roy and Johnny spend 30 minutes with this patient until landing and then on to Rampart (they are allowed to retrieve gear from the cargo hold). Today, airliners have an AED on board (and better packed first aid kits).

2) Equipment - This was made in 1976, before the advent of paramedic engine companies. Paramedic Gage is overtiming as a firefighter at Station 8 (normal for a big city department) when he and Captain Stone (who had been a paramedic) are treating a construction worker who had a heart attack and have to wait 25 minutes for cardiac drugs and a defibrillator because the only available squad was across town. Gage and Stone did their best with their brains and the equipment they had (as well as CPR), but the patient passed away. Had that happened today, Stone and Gage would of had the right equipment much earlier. REALLY makes you think - it hits home for a firefighter and an EMT or paramedic. I don't think any EMT or paramedic forgets the first patient they lost (I haven't - he was a 48 y/o male who died of a heart attack).

3) There are a few episodes in the Season 5 set where Johnny and Roy are dispatched to meet the Coast Guard. Today, the Coast Guard has their own EMT's and Paramedics.

4) The Frequency episode in Season 3 was also a good one, and there was one episode where a Priority Dispatch System was discussed. Priority Dispatch became reality down the road.

Newbie's as well as old-timers can watch these episodes for the history of the Standard of Care in the mid-1970's. Note the changes, and be thankful that your truck doesn't carry a 42 pound defibrillator, and you have EMT-first responders on fire trucks and police cruisers. Make sure you young guys thank these trailblazers for their perseverance, patients, and tenacity. Without them, you wouldn't be here today.』

(Great show)
『I was torn on the number of stars I was going to give this season because I have not watched this season on DVD. Its been what seems to be a life time ago that I watched the new season on TV. I was maybe 6 or so.

This is an awesome show. The acting in here by John and Roy is outstanding. Now when I watch the show, im watching and have that kid feeling inside again. Im also watching this show as an EMT. And as I watch John and Roy, their motions as they are working on a patient are exact and looks as if they are in real life, paramedics.

Another reason why I didn't put the fifth star on is the anticipation of the lesser quality there seems to be over other DVD sets.
The quality isn't such that had I gotten to preview the first 4 seasons that it would have stopped me from buying the other seasons. You have some spots where the lighting isn't good, sometimes the sound is a bit flat. To me, still well worth owning and not in such poor quality that you can not enjoy the show. The packaging is really good. DVD's are not able to flop around.

My 12 year old daughter loves the show also. I wonder if she will follow her mom's foot prints and become an EMT.』

(Emergency! Rocks!!)
『I remember watching this on Saturday nights back in the 70's--I think I was five when the first season started---how many season were there, I'm thinking six. I remember throwing a fit at my grandmother's hose because she wanted to watch "All In The Family"; I got my way. I remember when the first season came out I must have called everyone to tell them how excited I was. I'm looking forward to this DVD. Also does anyone remember the animated series on Saturday mornings?』

(when will medical center be released?)
『My wife and I are hooked on the show as we were as kids watching it originally in the 70's. She has been pestering me as well to find out about the spin off series called Medical Center which has frequent cameos from the emergency gang. Hey Amazon, please pester the studios to release that one as well quickly so both they and you may make some $ here.』

(I'm pre-ordering with an optimistic outlook!)
『First off, Emergency! is big favorite of mine as is all Webb TV; as in actor, director Jack Webb. With four season sets out, things were looking good when season 3 was released. Then came season 4 with most episodes looking like they were mastered from a 25 year-old VHS rental.

When Universal successfully farmed out season 2 of Adam-12 to SHOUT! Factory, we all had hope that possibly Dragnet and Emergency! and other Webb projects would follow suit. BUT, let us all have a bit of faith in the suits at Universal for a proper DVD release. Perhaps the massive fire experienced at Universal Studios will guide the powers to be in releasing pristine remastered episodes of a classic TV treasure.』

(Insulting Romantic "Comedy")
『I cannot believe how many women actually like this movie. I found it insulting that the audience could believe that there exists a professional woman in NYC completely obsessed with everything that is shallow about weddings in such a way that she has time to attend/coordinate them and be so close to 27 brides that she gets asked to be in their wedding party. Not only is the romantic plot hard to believe, a man who has been so harshly cynical about weddings, and possibly marriage itself, falls for a woman that is marriage and wedding-crazy (because I guess men secretly adore women who are desperate to get married), but it also has the most ludicrous scenes between the "lovers"!

The worst scene, in my opinion, was the one where she tries all the dresses for him, complete with hair and make-up (Was he in her apartment for days?). At this point she barely knows him, doesn't trust him, she acts like she's embarrassed by the dresses, but she happily models for this stranger anyway? It doesn't make any sense. And even less sense that a man would be entertained by this. The whole courtship seems forced, not natural at all.

Also unbelievable, the "relationship" that grows between the sister and the boss. How could a supposed intelligent, self-made man fall for a total air-head? He couldn't tell she wasn't really a vegetarian or liked to hike after a few weeks of dating? Why would the sister like him so much she's willing to lie about such basic stuff anyway? What a waste of Edward Burns.

The only reason I watched this movie was because I loved "the Devil Wears Prada" and this is from the same screenwriter. What a difference. Whereas "Devil" embraces the complexities of trying to keep a professional job and balance an actual relationship, this movie barely touches on anything that could possibly motivate the characters to do what they do or even "love" who they love.

Sometimes it feels like they make these movies for teenagers and not for adults: People in professional jobs act anything but, relationships are extremely shallow, and couples fall in "love" just because.

I'm all for romantic escapism, but I have my stupidity limits.

(Looking forward to a sequel, 54 Dresses)
『Katherine Heigl is worth every penny they pay her, for she manages to make palatable even the twist in the plot which forces her to unleash thirty years of fury at her family... I won't say how, but most any other actress would have brought the movie down with her at that point, for it is truly an ugly revelation. But somehow Heigl manages to retain the audience's sympathy.

Did I miss something, or was there really no answer to Malcolm asking Jane how she was able to afford to go to so many weddings (he mentions the airfare alone would have blown the budget for many women at Jane's career level.) She sort of brushes him off, but I expected some sort of payoff about this question, for it was just unbelievable. Don't you love when glamorous Tess comes to her sister's apartment straight from Milan, and she looks in and gushes about how cute and tiny it is! The two actresses make that scene work for the moment, but then on to later reels of the movie where it turns out that Jane has New York's biggest apartment! Well, nearly so, I think the title for the biggest apartment still belongs to the one that Hilary Swank and Gerald Butler (who were also supposed to be struggling New Yorkers) lived in at the beginning of PS I LOVE YOU, the last chick flick I watched.

Edward Burns was OK, but I imagine his casting was the result of some free association down at the casting office. "OK, his name is GEORGE... let's get BURNS..." for otherwise he was not that good. As for James Marsden, he's cute in a way, a little fellow, but now so alarmingly thin that every bone in his face sticks out, not just his cheekbones but bones you were never meant to see. Throw a hat at him, throw ten hats like a hat rack, that boney face of his will catch them all.』

(Love, love, LOVE THIS MOVIE!)
『I saw this movie in theatres and absolutely fell in love with it. I couldn't wait for it to come out on DVD so I could watch it again. A girl who doesn't know how to say 'no'; A sister who is so completely self-involved that she doesn't care to notice that her sister is in love with the guy she hooks up with; and a guy who is a cynic on the outside but a total romantic when he meets the right girl. I laughed and cried. Katherine Heigel and James Marsden are amazing...I love them. The "Benny and the jets"/bar scene is my absolute favorite, i think it's so cute. I Highly highly recommend this movie.』

(Even if you're NOT a "chick...")
『Not "Godfathers" I, II or even III, but an enjoyable flick! Heigl is thoroughly charming, and the soundtrack is TERRIFIC. Evidently, however, the producers of the film didn't wish to pay royalties to all of the recording artists, so there's no CD of it. Most of the songs appear to be downloadable...』

『Katherine Heigl (Knocked up, TV's Grey's Anatomy) lights up the screen in this charming romantic comedy from the screenwriter of The Devil Wears Prada." Heigl stars as Jane, a romantic, completely selfless woman who has been a bridesmaid in no less than 27 weddings. Unfortunately her own happy ending seems to be nowhere in sight. Until her younger sister Tess captures the heart of Jane's boss -- on whom Jane has a secret crush inspiring Jane to change her "always-a-bridesmaid" destiny.』
『Katherine Heigl is delightful as Jane, a self-effacing Gal Friday so addicted to organizing weddings in her off time, that27 Dressesopens with her character juggling two nuptials on the same night. A perpetual bridesmaid, Jane’s hobby is discovered by a matrimony reporter named Kevin (James Marsden), who hides a romantic side behind his wall of cynicism. While Kevin gradually develops feelings for Jane, the latter’s superficial sister, Tess (Malin Akerman), pursues George (Edward Burns), Jane’s boss and the objectof her love. This romantic circle could go on forever, except that Jane is unexpectedly moved by Kevin despite her general irritation with him and without knowing that he’s on the verge of sandbagging her with a ridiculing article in his newspaper. The situation is absurd, but the emotions are not. Heigl is very good, rooted in a long tradition of comely comediennes playing characters who fly under the radar of life. She makes Jane’s pain palpable and conveys her character’s inability to say no without making her look unappealing or weak. Marsden perfectly captures the part of a rumpled, underdressed writer with repressed passions, Akerman is as convincingly shrewish here as she was inThe Heartbreak Kid, and Burns is fine as one of those guys so busy saving the world he barely pays attention to the people in his life. The script by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) is fun if predictable, and Anne Fletcher’s direction is vibrant. --Tom Keogh

『The plot in "Home Alone" is clearly improbable, but that doesn't detract one whit from the appeal of impish (but sometimes adult far-beyond his years) Macaulay Culkin, bumbling Joe Pesci, and the rest of the cast. 『This movie has always been a childhood favorite and I encourage everyone to buy Home Alone because the language is very mild and it's suitable for a family audience.』

(Grandmother of Twelve)
『This film has many lessons to be learned. I've used it to teach CCD classes, showing that people should not be judged by how they appear (the mean old man next door). Also that families should appreciate one another more, a lesson that is learned by Kevin. The interaction between the boy Kevin and the would-be burglars is over the top, but is much appreciated by kids twelve and under. The good guys win, and the bad guys go to jail. When he is most afraid, Kevin seeks sanctuary in the house of God, the place of ultimate safety. The persistance of Kevin's mother in her attempts to return home to her son shows the depth of a mother's love. She is rescued by the kindness of strangers who show the true spirit of Christmas in sharing their ride with her.』

(One of the best comedys of 1990 and one of the funniest films from my childhood)
『Home Alone was one of the funniest film released in 1990 and is still a Christmas classic to me , tweleve years later. Macaualy Culkin became a star with this film and Joe Pesci showed more acting talent om this film. The ending in the film is one of the funniest and when I have kids I'll show them this treasured classic.』
『Now and forever a favorite among kids, this 1990 comedy written by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club) and directed by Chris Columbus (Mrs. Doubtfire) ushered Macaulay Culkin onto the screen as a troubled 8-year-old who doesn't comfortably mesh with his large family. He's forced to grow a little after being accidentally left behind when his folks and siblings fly off to Paris. A good-looking boy, Culkin lights up the screen during several funny sequences, the most famous of which finds him screaming for joy when he realizes he's unsupervised in his own house. A bit wooden with dialogue, the then-little star's voice could grate on the nerves (especially in long, wise-child passages of pure bromide), but he unquestionably carries the film. Billie Bird and John Candy show up as two of the interesting strangers Culkin's character meets. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are entertainingly cartoonish as thieves, but the ensuing violence once the little hero decides to keep them out of his house is over-the-top.--Tom Keogh
