(One Hundred and One Dalmatians)
『Walt Disney's "One Hundred and One Dalmatians" is one of the best loved family films of all time, however, when lined up against greats like "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and "Pinocchio", it is easy to see its shortcomings. Standing alone, it is a highly entertaining adventure that can be enjoyed by anyone and if released today, I believe it would create the same sensation it caused when it premiered in 1961.

The story revolves around two Dalmatians, Pongo and Perdita, and their owners, Roger and Anita, who occupy a modest flat in urban London. Not long after Perdita gives birth to a litter of fifteen puppies, they are abducted by the evil Cruella De Vil, an old schoolmate of Anita's who lusts for a coat made of Dalmatian puppy fur. While the humans mourn, Pongo and Perdita utilize the "Twilight Bark", a canine gossip chain, which leads them to Hell Hall, a deteriorating manor house in the English countryside where the puppies, along with eighty four others are being held captive by Cruella's bumbling assistants, Horace and Jasper. In order to save their children, Pongo and Perdita must seek help from an assortment of neighboring animal friends including Colonel, a sputtering Old Enlglish Sheepdog and a brave cat named Mr. Tibbs, but as time runs out and Cruella's suspisions intensify, the fate of the puppies grows more and more uncertain.

While this all sounds very thrilling, at times the story can be quite dull and uneventful. The entire first act drones along like an infomercial for Prozac and the animation, especially the scenes in Roger and Anita's flat, looks bland and too two-dimensional.

It isn't until the arrival of Cruella De Vil that the plot truly begins to boil. She is the saving grace of the picture and quite frankly, the sole reason to see it. With Betty Lou Gerson's smokey vocal stylings and animator Marc Davis's graceful hand and observant eye, they create one of the great screen villainesses of all time. It is much more than a performance - it is life on the screen.』

(Classic Disney Movie)
『This is a classic movie to add to any Disney collection. It is best to buy it now while it is out of the "vault" because otherwise the Disney movies are hard to find anywhere, including Amazon.com. My nephews enjoy this movie and want to watch it whenever they come over.』

(FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!)

『This DVD was a gift for someone. I knew it would be here, and I was satisfied with the purchase. It was sent to me very quickly, and it works fine.』
『101 Dalmatians has charmed audiences for generations with its irresistible tail-wagging stars, memorable music, and a wonderful blend of fantasy, humor, and adventure. Now, with spectacular new bonus features and brilliantly restored, Walt Disney s beloved animated classic shines like never before in an all-new 2-disc Platinum Edition.
Cruella De Vil, Disney s most outrageous villain, sets the fur-raising adventure in motion when she dognaps all of Pongo and Perdita s puppies. Through the power of the Twilight Bark, Pongo leads a heroic cast of animal characters on a quest across London to rescue them.
Bring home the exciting 2-disc Platinum Edition with something for everyone, including the all-new virtual Dalmatians game, over 101 pop-up trivia facts, an all-new music video and much more!』

『Back in 1961, Walt Disney got a little hip with101 Dalmatians, making use of that flat Saturday morning cartoon style that had become so popular. The result is a kitschy change in animation and story. Pongo and Perdita are two lonely dalmatians who meet cute in a London park and arrange for their pet humans to marry so they can live together and raise a family. They become proud parents of 15 pups, who are stolen by the dastardly Cruella De Vil, who wants to make a fur coat out of them. Cruella has become the most popular villain in all of Disney; she's flamboyantly nasty and lots of fun. But it's the dalmatians who shine in this endearing classic, particularly those precocious pups. Telling the story from the dogs' point of view is a clever conceit, a fundamental flaw of the live-action remake. --Bill Desowitz

On the DVD
This two-disc platinum edition features great sound and incredibly bright, intense colors thanks to the restoration process, but its most impressive selling point is the huge assortment of bonus features designed to delight children, families, and the most serious Disney fans. Kids will have fun caring for their very own puppy in the virtual Dalmatian game for television or on DVD ROM and can find out just what kind of puppy they're most like and which human Disney character they're most compatible with in the puppy profiler game. The fun with language game is geared toward the very young preschooler and teaches numbers and the names of common household items. A modern Selena Gomez music video of "Cruella DeVil" will appeal to tweens and teens. The whole family will enjoy the "101 Pop Up Facts For Families" option which prints various movie facts like the name and author of the original book and how specific scenes differ between the book and the movie right on the screen during the movie and Disney fans will love the similar "101 Pop Up Facts For Fans" feature which supplies a wide variety of film trivia about featured voice talents, famous Disney animators that worked on the film, technical devices employed like multi-pane shots and the Xerox process, and which artists directed specific scenes in the movie. Eleven separate Backstage Disney featurettes interview a host of animators, writers, historians, producers, and story men regarding the film's contemporary feel and the groundbreaking technical processes like the then-new Xerox process utilized in making101 Dalmatians. Also highlighted is Bill Pete's amazing storytelling contribution to the film, the technical and mechanical innovations of Ub Iwerks, the songwriting process, and the animation prowess of famous Disney animators like Woolie Reitherman, Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Milt Kahl, Marc Davis, Ken Anderson, and Walt Peregoy. The 12-minute dramatization of the longstanding correspondence between author Dodie Smith and Walt Disney is intriguing and the trailers and radio and television spots provide fun historical reference for the film and its various releases. Finally, the "Music and More" feature presents a variety of deleted and abandoned songs as well as many alternate versions and takes of songs used in the final film.--Tami Horiuchi

(The X-Files: I Want to Believe)
『Having never watched a single episode of Chris Carter's "The X-Files" or the 1998 feature film, I was relieved when I discovered that the newest addition to the series did not require any previous knowledge of the popular franchise. "The X-Files: I Want to Believe" can truly hold its own against any other crime thriller out there. Instead of building on preexisting plot points, the audience is totally submersed into a brand new story and while I am sure David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson's portrayals of agents Fox Mulder and Dana Skully are consistent with any previous work, their performances are fresh and very much alive on screen.

In a refreshing twist, the film takes place in a world not too far removed from the present day. Unlike the parallel universe that many movies situate themselves (which looks like the real world but features a never ending parade of explosions, gunfire, and high-speed car chases), Mulder and Skully's latest case is very much rooted in reality, which makes the events of the plot more horrifying than it would have otherwise.

The plot itself is a macabre jig-saw puzzle that had me riveted from the very first scene, which sees a withering, seemingly delusional old man named Father Joe (Bill Connolly) leading a team of FBI agents headed by Agent Dakota Whitney (Amanda Peet) through a vast field of frozen snow, which later leads to the discovery of a severed human arm and a bizarre collection of other clues that lead to one of the most horrifying villains' lairs I have seen in all my days as a moviegoer. Complicating things even further is a series of subplots concerning the disappearance of two young women, the constant involvement of the FBI, the questionable past of a conflicted pedophile who claims to have psychic abilities, the plight of one of Dana's diseased patients, and a team of Eastern European medical workers whose contributions to science are considerably less than honorable.

Compared to last year's selection of summer movies (which included the disappointing sequels to the "Spider-Man", "Shrek", and "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchises), this year has proven itself to be a far more competent season. With the exception of a few, every movie I have seen these past few months have featured rich storytelling and bold characterizations as well as underlying messages that stimulate the mind and invite interesting conversation long after the credits have rolled. It's safe to say that my belief in the summer blockbuster has been restored.』

(Welcome Back Mulder and Scully; But There Is a Slight Problem with the Story...)
『One good news about "The X Files: I Want to Believe," second feature-length film based on the TV series (1993-2002) is that Mulder and Scully are back, with their chemistry intact. Naturally David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson look older, but their characters haven't essentially changed since the last time we saw them together on TV. Mulder is still a believer of the paranormal phenomena while Scully is a skeptic who is somehow attracted to Mulder's belief and, more importantly, Mulder as a man. If you are looking forward to seeing these two beloved characters (and I believe most people would), the new film is fairly entertaining.

Bad news is, "The X Files: I Want to Believe," directed by Chris Carter himself, doesn't have a story that really interests us. Billy Connolly plays a retired (and once convicted) priest who, he claims, can see things with his supernatural powers. He actually finds something that might prove his abilities and Amanda Peet's agent, together with Mulder who is called back to duty by FBI, investigates a case of another agent who is missing for more than three days. Scully, who is now working at a hospital as a doctor, rather reluctantly joins them. Everything in the story looks as if they are borrowed from somewhere else, except the two main characters.

Actually, it seems Chris Carter is more interested in showing us Mulder and Scully, focusing their relationships, than following the case of a missing agent for which they are called back again on screen. His decision is understandable - after all the original TV series worked because of their characters - but still the film which obviously needs a more compelling story also spends considerable time following the sub-plot about a patient in the hospital where Scully works. Carter's direction only slows down the pace of the film, and the slower pace only exposes the plot holes in the weak script.

Some people complain that the film doesn't have UFOs or conspiracy theories, but to me the real problem of the film is the lack of mystery and coherent storyline. I know this is not an action film, but as you know, having a more engaging story does not hurt.

(Who is Frankenstein?)
『I loved the movie. Revisiting Mulder and Scully was like bumping into old friends. But one question has been burning in my mind... Who were they rebuilding??? I would have thought that would be a mindblowing plot point. The only charateristic of the "body" they were working on was that he/she/it had curiously black fingernails (which the camera made a slow deliberate pan down the arm to). The CSM? Unlikely. But WHO????? This is killing me. Can't wait to see the film again. There's got to be a clue.』

(LOVED IT, MADE ME WANT TO SEE THE X-FILES AGAIN!)
『After the season ended I had invested so much time into the X-files and I just didn't want to watch it again because I knew it was over and it wouldn't be the same...so years went by without watching any of it but I went with my friend to see I want to Believe and it got me so much back into the X-Files that I'm now collecting the series and will be purchasing this movie. My favorite parts were the ones between Mulder and Scully, to see how they're relationship had progressed and to see that they are human and get older. And there are hints of Scully's desire for their child...I really hope Chris Carter will do another independent movie to answer maybe that desire for them to see their son. But it was thrilling, I LOVED IT. And isn't amazing how young Scully still looks? What in the world did Gillian Anderson do during these years...bath in wrinkle cream? Gotta love this movie, its another chapter to the fictional lives of these wonderful characters.』

(Just Disappointing...sorry!)
『There is nothing supernatural and/or extra terrestrial about this story. It is pretty boring to be honest with you. The show centered around aliens and supernatural phenomena. Why would you not make the movie in such a way?

Instead you have a semi romantic murder/kidnapping mystery set in a snowy nowhere with a weak cast and plot. I simply do not get why you would anyone in their right mind choose this story for the movie. You could have put any two male and female actors in this slot and it would have been the same thing. The movie simply has nothing to do with the show.』

『The feature filmThe X-Files: I Want to Believeis a satisfying if unspectacular installment in theX-Filesseries, taking place an unspecified time after the show's nine-year television run. Former agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) is now a doctor, while Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) is being hunted by his former agency and living in seclusion. He and Scully are summoned back by a case involving a missing agent and a former priest (Billy Connolly) who claims to be able to see clues to the agent's whereabouts psychically, though his initial search turns up only a severed limb. Don't expect the usual cast of characters; the FBI has completely turned over (except for the George W. Bush portrait), and the only reason Scully and Mulder are back is because agent Dakota Whitney (Amanda Peet) remembers his success on similar cases involving the unexplainable. Don't expect the same rogues' gallery either; unlike the previousX-Filesfeature film, which was inextricably linked to the series' convoluted mythology arc (and served as a bridge between the fifth and sixth seasons),I Want to Believeis a stand-alone piece that makes use of the series' roots in horror/sci-fi and moody Vancouver, B.C., locales. Also unlike the previous film, which was almost self-consciously shot for the big screen, this film is on a smaller scale, like a double-length episode of the series. But it's still a good reminder of the creepy vibe that hooked fans for years. And the relationship between Mulder and Scully? It seems to have resumed pretty much where it left off, at least when you take into account the long period of separation. But stick around for the end-credit sequence to take in all the possibilities for the future.--David Horiuchi

『Series 1-7 was great and i am sure the 8th one is just as good. Can't wait for it to come out!』

(The Waltons, World War, and more Change)
『Season Eight was a particular interesting year for The Waltons. Michael Learned (Olivia) returned for twelve episodes, Ellen Corby is seen in fewer episodes as Grandma, and Robert Wightman makes his first appearance as John-Boy; replacing Richard Thomas for the rest of the series.

Despite these things, the show still retained its family values, and appeal. The season begins with World War II raging, John-Boy is missing in action, Jason is in charge of recruits, and Olivia struggles to keep up with her changing family. Erin, Elizabeth, and Mary Ellen do their best to help in the war effort, and Ben and Cindy have their first baby.

When Olivia leaves to go back to the Sanitorium, Rose--a close family member--comes to help with the needs of the family. Jason befriends a woman named Toni (his future wife), and Jim-Bob finishes flight school and heads to war as a pilot.

The following is a list of the 24 episodes of this season:

1. The Home Front (1)
2. The Home Front (2)
3. The Kinfolk
4. The Diploma
5. The Innocents
6. The Starlet

(A timeless classic!)
『The Jungle Book is one of those Disney classics that I never ever get tired of watching! It was the first ever Disney cartoon that my parents got me when I was a child. The characters in this masterpiece are wonderful and each and every one of them has a unique style and personality. Kudos to Rudyard Kipling for writing this beautiful story that will live on in our hearts for many years to come!』

(Great film for kids and grown-ups, too)
『Having called a month-long time out on princess stuff, I ordered this hoping but not really believing it would replace Little Mermaid or Cinderella in my daughter's mind. But she loves it. She doesn't get to watch the whole thing often but I occasionally just cue up the songs and let her watch, sing along and dance to those. Definitely a solid choice for any home dvd collection.』

(Highly recommend!)
『This was a treasured movie of my mom's...it was always one of her favorite Disney movies, along with Pinocchio. She passed her love of this movie along to me as a child and I loved it too. When I saw that it was restored, I couldn't pass it up(especially because I have a child of my own now to pass it along too). what a wonderful movie...better than I remembered. No Pixar movie can come close to the warm feeling you get when you watch these cartoons that are actually drawn&painstakingly developed by hand.
I highly recommend this to anyone』

『One of the most popular Disney films ever, THE JUNGLE BOOK is a song-filled celebration of friendship, fun, and adventure set in a lush and colorful world. Inspired by Rudyard Kipling's "Mowgli" stories, Disney's 19th animated masterpiece was the last animated feature that had Walt Disney's personal touch. The jubilant adventure begins when Mowgli, a little boy raised by wolves, is urged by his friend Bagheera, a wise old panther, to seek safety in the man village. Feeling very much at home in the jungle, Mowgli resists and runs off. Much to Bagheera's dismay, Mowgli meets a new friend with a happy-go-lucky philosophy of life -- Baloo the Bear, a lovable "jungle bum." Together, the three buddies find the journey back to civilization anything but civilized! They encounter a crazy orangutan, the hypnotic and sly snake Kaa, and the menacing Shere Khan! Fully restored for this 30th anniversary edition, this enduring classic swings with jazzy toe-tapping music, including the Academy Award(R)-nominated "The Bare Necessities," and the freewheeling "I Wan'na Be Like You"! A thrilling story for all ages, THE JUNGLE BOOK is an absolute necessity for your video collection.』
『Disney's 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. Based on fiction by Rudyard Kipling, the film goes its own way as Disney animation will, but the strong characters and smart casting (George Sanders as the villainous tiger, Shere Khan) make it one of the studio's stronger feature-length cartoons. Songs include "The Bare Necessities" and "Trust in Me."--Tom Keogh
『A classic 1967 Disney animated film that's loosely based on Rudyard Kipling's book of the same name,Jungle Booktells the story of a young boy Mowgli who was raised by animals in the jungle. When tiger Shere Khan threatens to return to their part of the jungle, the other animals decide that Mowgli must return to the man village in order to ensure his safety. Panther Bagheera has difficulty convincing Mowgli to follow him to the man village and recruits the help of a big lovable bear Baloo. Mowgli's journey is one of wit, song, and many surprises. A timeless film populated by strong characters bursting with personality, great music like "Bare Necessities" and "I Wanna Be Like You," and inspiring animation by Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, and other master animators,Jungle Bookcaptivates audiences of all ages.

This Platinum Edition includes everything from the standard bonus features like interactive games, music videos, and deleted songs to exciting and sometimes rare commentaries by everyone from modern day animators to Walt Disney himself, multiple featurettes about specific aspects of the film and its production, and a lengthy deleted scene featuring lost character Rocky the Rhino. Especially interesting for adults and Disney fans are "The Bare Necessities: The making ofThe Jungle Book" featurette, which explores Walt Disney's commitment to developing strong characters and his insistence that writers, animators, and song writers create a light version of Jungle Book that followed his own personal interpretation of the story, and the "The Lure ofThe Jungle Book" featurette, which discusses Frank Thomas' and Ollie Johnston's amazing contribution to the film as prolific animators and the inspiration and influence that their work provided for future animators including Brad Bird (The Incredibles), Andreas Deja (Beauty and the BeastandThe Lion King), Sergio Pablos (Tarzan), Will Finn (Home on the Range), and Eric Goldberg (Fantasia 2000). The full length commentary by Bruce Reitherman (voice of Mowgli), animator Andreas Deja, and composer Richard Sherman with its interspersed archival commentary of Disney greats from the original creative team (Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Woolie Reitherman, and others) is also very interesting and insightful.--Tami Horiuchi

("Director's Cut" versus "Theatrical Cut")
『This review is not so much a review of the movie or this release in particular. It would seem that there will be no shortage of glorious reviews of this movie and I would just be adding my voice to the gale winds of appraise. I write this to clear up the common mis-perception that the longer cut of this movie is a director's cut.

The previously released longer cut of The Last Emperor which was released on DVD and subsequently labeled as a "Director's Cut" is in fact a longer, made for television mini-series version that was made to satisfy a particular distribution/production deal. Bertolucci himself has gone on record to say that the actual version of the film that he envisioned is the one that went out to theaters, thereby making the shorter "Theatrical Cut" the actual director's cut.

Being the huge fan of this movie that I am, I can't help but want more of this movie, but I'd be lying if I said that the shorter version isn't great just as it is. The movie does not lose any of its magic without the added content. I've given this review a 4 star rating because of the completist in me. If there are two versions of a movie out there. I would enjoy the option of playing the version that I want. Criterion did so with their DVD release, but failed to do it with their Blu-ray release. Welcome to double-dip country. As of this writing, I still have not determined if I shall fall prey to their marketing ploy since I have been waiting so long for a good transfer of this film.』

(Previous reviews incorrect.)
『The shorter version of the film is the director's preferred version of the film. The longer version was a version he had cut for television distribution, and while its a shame that the extended version will not be included, rest assured that the shorter version is the director's cut of the film.』

(Not Director's Cut on Blu-Ray DVD)
『I agree with the last reviewer. There's gonna be much controversy with this Blu-Ray release because the last release on standard DVD was so spectacular. The Blu-Ray release seems to only contain the 165 min. version as opposed to the 219 min. Director's Cut. It would make sense for Criterion to release both versions with all the extras since they normally contain all the bells and whistles.』

(Not everything that shines is gold)
『I was swept out of my feet when I saw the movie more that 20 years ago. I bought it on VHS format. When it was released on DVD I dumped the VHS and bought the DVD format, then there was a second version of the movie and here comes the sad part. It was the original director's cut of 218 minutes (read 3 hours and 38 minutes). Dump the short version and buy the complete movie. Never regretted it. And what do I see now? The Last Emperor on Blu-ray? Far out! But there's a catch. Despite the bunch of documentaries, bonus material and interviews and so on, and so on, The Criterion Collection's edition on Blu-ray offers us a 164 minutes version of the movie. That's almost an hour less than the Artisan DVD edition I own. I don't get it. If Blu-ray offers us high definition quality and 8 hours of time, why not have the whole movie on Blu-ray DVD? There's plenty of room for whatever else they want to put in. I don't know if director Bertolucci agreed or not on that, but whoever decided to mutilate and desecrate the movie in this edition is a shame and tasteless ignorant (unless it is a mistake in printing the running time information). That's why I rate it only 3 stars. If you ask me for the movie itself, it is a 5 star 2 thumbs up movie not only for the director's superb work, but also for the cast, costumes, photography, locations, script, everything. You want to know what's the movie about? There's more than enough information about it everywhere. Read some of the reviews in Amazon for instance and for the time been buy the 218 minutes DVD edition of the director's cut.』

(A Visual Gem)
『I saw "The Last Emperor" a few years back and the movie has staid with me in many a positive way. I was truly amazed at the quality of the sets, the costumes and and the color throughout the movie. I had the feeling that we were seeing scenes shot in the Forbidden City itself. The tale is one that deserved telling because it gives us the story of China in the 20th Century.

The prime focus of the story, obviously, is the last emporer of China, Pu Yi. We are given ample time to see the Old China through the many facets of his seclusive life in a setting of grandeur. Every aspect of every scene shown reinforces the imagery of a world of imperial power totally seperated from the hundreds of millions subjected to his rule. When rebellion reached the gates, it was time to take the best offer and leave. However, a grandiose lifestyle dating back to one's earliest memory is not replaced by a modest town house. We watched the dethroned emporer drift into an aimless life of spoiled affluence. During the Japanese invasion, the conquering army installs Pu Yi as a sort of puppet emporer to give a semblance of authority to their control. Ultimately, Pu Yi falls victim to the Communist regiem that fells no need to treat the fallen emporer any different form any othe Chinese individual in need of re-education. In a sense, Pu Yi comes to represent everything wrong with the Old China and everything wrong with the New China. All of this takes place with occassional shifts in time between past and present.

The question arises as to what category this movie fits into; an historical drama or a morality play on how the mighty have fallen. In a way it is a combination of both. The visual experience of history in "The Last Emporer" is often breath-taking and the contemplation of the life of Pu Yi impacts us in a similar manner. Yet we may come away asking ourselves just what is the message of this nearly three-hour movie. I, for one, was not able to immediately answer that question. However, it seems that everything I have read or viewed about 20th Century China since has brought me back to "The Last Emporer". As I looked up this movie to write this review, I discovered that Bertolucci has released a "director's cut" edition of "The Last Emporer" that has added an other hour to the movie. This movie impressed me so much that i will just have to get that edition to see what I missed. What I got the first time around was simply outstanding.』

『Bernardo Bertolucci s The Last Emperor won nine Academy Awards, unexpectedly sweeping every category in which it was nominated quite a feat for a challenging, multilayered epic directed by an Italian and starring an international cast. Yet the power and scope of the film was, and remains, undeniable the life of Emperor Pu Yi, who took the throne at age three, in 1908, before witnessing decades of cultural and political upheaval, within and without the walls of the Forbidden City. Recreating Ching-dynasty China with astonishing detail and unparalleled craftsmanship by cinematographer Vittorio Storaro and production designer Ferdinando Scarfiotti, The Last Emperor is also an intimate character study of one man reconciling personal responsibility and political legacy.

『Bernardo Bertolucci does the nearly impossible with this sweeping, grand epic that tells a very personal tale. The story is a dramatic history of Pu Yi, the last of the emperors of China. It follows his life from its elite beginnings in the Forbidden City, where he was crowned at age three and worshipped by half a billion people. He was later forced to abdicate and, unable to fend for himself in the outside world, became a dissolute and exploited shell of a man. He died in obscurity, living as a peasant in the People's Republic. We never really warm up to John Lone in the title role, but this movie focuses more on visuals than characterization anyway. Filmed in the Forbidden City, it is spectacularly beautiful, filling the screen with saturated colors and exquisite detail. It won nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.--Rochelle O'Gorman
