(Good)
『The middle film of Polish-French film director Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colors (Trois Couleurs) trilogy of Blue, White, and Red is a very black comedy, and generally considered the weakest of the three films. This is true, although, given the high quality of the tercet, White (Blanc) is still an excellent film, and compared with the mind-numbing comedies that Hollywood regularly cranks out, it is exceptional. And, at a mere hour and a half, this 1994 film never drags on too long. However, one of the major misconceptions about the film and its hero, Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski)- literally Charley Charley, is that he is a Chaplinesque figure. I believe that the many critics who use this term intend it as a high compliment, as they reference the greatest of the silent era screen stars, Charlie Chaplin, and his character of The Tramp. But, in doing so, they show how little they understand of the character and its portrayer.
There is a range of emotion that The Tramp shows in both the short subjects and feature films he appears in that none of the actors whose performances have subsequently been compared with his have displayed. There have never been moments the equal of the roll dance in The Gold Rush, nor the ending of City Lights, where the blind girl realizes her seemingly rich benefactor is The Tramp, nor the scenes of modernity run amok in Modern Times, nor the dance with the globe in The Great Dictator. This is not to demean any of the later performances, for some, such as Giulieta Masina's role as Gelsomina in Federico Fellini's La Strada, or that of Zamachowski in White are excellent, but none rally come close to that Chaplinesque mix of lightheartedness and dark pathos. Karol, as example, is a far more dismal and dark character than any played by Chaplin. Right from the start there is something `off' about him. In Hollywood a character like his might end up a serial killer or child molester.
That all said, White is a delightful if flawed comedy, and had it been a Hollywood film it would probably rank much higher in critical opinion worldwide. It's merely because American minds have been so cauterized by bad art that a film like this has to be judged against its superior European counterparts, and its own siblings in the Three Colors trilogy, rather than the minor leagues that American cinema represents. Were it judged against the standard fart comedy mindset, or that of the tired `romantic comedy' formulae, it would be seen in a far greater light. Regardless, it is well worth seeing, and a good way to spend an evening. When was the last romantic comedy from America that such a claim could be made for?

(overrated)
『Only just got around to watching this after hearing years of raves for "White". In a word: overrated. Slight comedy. Others say symbolism. More like cheap and obvious. The whole motivation behind this tale of revenge is unbelievable and contrived. Go on to "Blue" and "Red" for rewarding viewing.』

(Utterly brilliant)
『White (Krzysztof Kieslowski, 1994)

When I mentioned to people that I was in the midst of watching Three Colours, Kieslowski's celebrated film trilogy, for the first time, to a person, I got the same reaction: "oh, Blue is my favorite of the three, but the other two are really good as well!" Of course, if you've been following along, you know me: if there's a sacred cow around, I have an overwhelming urge to turn it into shish-kebab, and that may be part of the reason that, now that I've given myself a few weeks' perspective from all three films, I've landed on White as my favorite of the three. But it could also be that White is the film that, in some odd way that I can't quite put my finger on, most reminded me of Dekalog, my favorite Kieslowski offering. Even though Blue has the most surface connection to Dekalog, White has a great deal of that same mindset going on under the hood. Kieskowski's masterful morality play would have fit right in with Dekalog, I think.

The wonderfully-named Karol Karol (The Call of the Toad's Zbigniew Zamachowski) is a Polish expatriate barely getting by in Paris. His lovely young wife Dominique (Killing Zoe's Julie Delpy) has just divorced him after only six months, and he finds himself homeless. While playing a comb in the metro to pick up spare change, he meets Mikolaj (Aquarium's Janusz Gajos), a wealthy Polish businessman who wants Karol to come back to Poland with him to perform a service (saying what would be a spoiler). Things turn out unexpectedly in Poland, and Karol, who has never forgotten Dominique's betrayal, alternately tries to go on with his life without her and concocts absurd schemes to win her back.

I think one of the reasons I liked White more than the other two films is that, of the Kieslowski works I've seen (all the major films at this point, and a few of the shorts-- not nearly as many as I'd like), it's the out-and-out funniest; it requires a warped sense of humor, to be sure, but Karol is without doubt meant to be a comic figure, and Zamachowski's hapless portrayal is spot-on. Karol never feels entirely comfortable in his skin, whether he's on top of the world or at the bottom of the trash heap, and it's Zamachowski's excellent portrayal of Karol that makes this film a success as much as it is Kieslowski's impressive directorial skills. Whereas Juliette Binoche's character in Blue was never less than self-assured, even when she was entirely lost, Karol is her opposite; he's never self-assured even when he's most found. And yet neither Zamachowski nor Kieslowski ever overplay their hands; Karol is usually at least sympathetic, if not outright pathetic, but Zamachowski does it so well that even the well-worn cliché that forms the final movement of the film comes off as fresh and inviting.

White is Kieslowski at his finest, easily on a par with episodes five and seven of Dekalog. I cannot recommend the films of Kieslowski highly enough, if you haven't already experienced them; while I'd suggest starting with Dekalog, it does represent a serious chunk of time, and Three Colours gives you a taste of the genius without having to invest eleven hours and change. ****½

(Superb!)
『Karol ( Zbigniew Zamachowski ) is disposed by his wife, Dominique ( Julie Delpy ) and forced to go back to his home country, Poland. Then, he thinks of and begins to plan the revenge to her, supported by his friend, Mikolaj ( Janusz Gajos ). When he becomes a successful businessman, it's the time to carry out his PLAN to acquire equality...
White implies purity and innocence, but also means equality. This film tells how a man acquires the equality with his wife.
Oscar nominee and the star of "Before Sunset", Julie Delpy portrays Dominique as icy beauty. Zamachowski plays a clueless man well. The story is depicted as somewhat comedic but serious touch. The friendship between Karol and Mikolaj is interesting. This movie received the winner of the best director award at the Berlin Film Festival.
Director Kieslowski is prominent in the unique expression. He effectively uses silence, unique behavior, metaphor, minimum speech, and beautiful music. These effects give deep impression. For instance, some funny moments are depicted by serious touch in this film. Also, an old lady appears through the three colors trilogy. It is interesting that Julie( Blue ), Karol( White ), and Valentine( Red ) react differently toward the old lady.
The three colors trilogy is the masterpiece of Kieslowski and consists of three films (" Blue", "White", and "Red" ) . The colors of French flag means liberty, equality, fraternity. Director Kieslowski expressed these themes through the movies. If you like Kieslowski's movie, you will like it.

(Essential cinema: Krzysztof Kieslowski's 'Trois couleurs: Blanc.)
『One of the most critically acclaimed film cycles ever made, Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski's (1941-1996) Three Colors Trilogy (Blue / White / Red) is the collective title of three celluloid poems, Three Colours: Blue (Trois couleurs: Bleu) (1993), Three Colours: White (1994), and Three Colours: Red (Trois couleurs: Rouge) (1994), and somewhat loosely based on the colours of the French flag in left-to-right order, which represent the three political ideals of the French Republic: liberty, equality, fraternity. Although each film of the Three Colors trilogy stands on its own, the films should be watched as a series. The three-film collected set Three Colors Trilogy (Blue / White / Red) is worth the investment.

Set in Paris, in the opening scene in Three Colors: White (French: Trois couleurs: Blanc) Juliette Binoche (playing Julie from "Blue") briefly enters a courtroom by accident. "White" is a black comedy that tells the story of an immigrant, Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski), who finds himself in a Paris divorce court after he is unable to consummate his marriage with his wife Dominique (tres sexy Julie Delpy). The judge tells confused Karol his wife does not love him anymore. After Karol loses his wife, his means of support (a beauty salon), and his money, while performing songs for spare change in a Paris Métro station, he is befriended by another Pole, Mikoaj (Janusz Gajos). Mikoaj is suicidal and offers to pay Karol to kill him. Still brooding over his wife's abandonment, Karol plots to win back Dominique only as a means to get even with her (equality).

The Three Colours Trilogy ranks among my all-time personal film favorites, and it consistently ranks in critical top-ten movie lists. Highly recommended.

『A seductive story of love and obsession, WHITE won nationwide critical acclaim for its intoxicating blend of eroticism and intrigue. Directed by acclaimed director Krzysztof Kieslowski (BLUE, RED, THE DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIQUE), and featuring sexy Julie Delpy (TV's ER, THE THREE MUSKETEERS, AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN PARIS), WHITE is the mysterious tale of a man whose life disintegrates when his beautiful wife of six months deserts him. Forced to begin anew, he rebuilds his life, only to plan a dangerous scheme of vengeance against her! Winner of the Best Director Award at the Berlin Film Festival, WHITE is a story of dark, illicit passions -- one of the year's most provocative big-screen releases!』
Whiteis the second of witty Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowki's "three colors" trilogyBlue,White, andRed--the three colors of the French flag, symbolizing liberty, equality, and fraternity.Whiteis an ironic comedy brimming over with the hard laughs of despair, ecstasy, ambition, and longing played in a minor key.

Down-and-out Polish immigrant Karol Karol is desperate to get out of France. He's obsessed with his French soon-to-be ex-wife (Before Sunrise's Julie Delpy), his French bank account is frozen, and he's fed up with the inequality of it all. Penniless, he convinces a fellow Pole to smuggle him home in a suitcase--which then gets stolen from the airport. The unhappy thieves beat him and dump him in a snowy rock pit. Things can only get better, right? The story evolves into a wickedly funny antiromance, an inverse Romeo and Juliet. Because it's in two foreign languages, the dialogue can be occasionally hard to follow, but some of the most genuinely funny and touching moments need no verbal explanation.--Grant Balfour

(Batman On Wire)
『While police sirens whine far below, this man looks from a towering skyscraper down at Gotham as he prepares to step into the abyss. He knows that what he will do is not legal, but thinks that it will benefit others. Even more, he is drawn -- by his very nature -- to act.
If you think I'm writing about Batman in The Dark Knight, well, I'm not (at least not just yet). I'm writing about Man on Wire, a documentary about tight rope walker and proto performance artist Philippe Petit, who wire walked between the tops of the World Trade Center's Twin Towers in August of 1974.
Director James Marsh uses a combination of vintage footage, contemporary interviews and dramatic recreations to tell the story of how Petit dreamed up his mad scheme, recruited his motley band of helpers and circumvented security to bring his dangerous plan to fruition. In some ways, the film works as a caper or heist film wherein in a team is gathered to steal the jewels or break out of prison.
There is no mystery about whether he will be successful. After all, Petit is interviewed in the present day (so we know he lives), and no one would make a film about someone who wasn't able to pull off an elaborate stunt over thirty years ago. The fun is watching how it was done. But it can be a bit unsettling to watch as blueprints for the World Trade Centers are laid out to plot a stunt, when we know that in the years after 1974 the blueprints for the buildings will be studied for much more malignant reasons.
But as a Christian, I find it odd to be put in a place of rooting for someone who's breaking the law. In Romans 13: 1&2 the apostle Paul wrote "1Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves."
Petit's comrades argue that since he has no ill intent, it doesn't matter if he breaks the law. In the film we are shown some of Petite's stunts prior to the WTC, tightrope walking between the towers of the Norte Dame Cathedral and the towers of the Sydney Harbor Bridge. After being arrested in Sydney, Petit swipes the watch of one of the policemen who arrests him.
I think when we're young we all have an impulse to break or at least bend the law. (I know as a kid and a teen, I might not have always strictly followed laws scrupulously concerning trespassing when with a friend off-roading or toilet papering houses or...the traffic laws or... how much of this do I want my kids to read?) And part of the fun of watching movies is seeing characters do what we would never do. But this is a real person committing a real crime that could have not only cost him his own life, but the lives of onlookers and the police called to bring him in.
And yet watching a man walk back and forth between those massive structures is captivating and at times quite beautiful. Can we become too obsessed with following legalities?
Jesus certainly was not always a stickler for the law. The Pharisaic law said that one should not do any work on the Sabbath, including healing. But we have this story about Jesus from Matthew 12 - "9Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, they asked him, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"
11He said to them, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." 13Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other."
But there is a difference. When Jesus broke the law, it was always clearly for the glory of God, the benefit of others and the furtherance of the Kingdom. It wasn't just on a lark or for self glorification.
So back to Batman. Yes, I did see some similarities between these films. One of the most fascinating things in The Dark Knight (directed by Chris Nolan) is Bruce Wayne (played by Christian Bale) wrestling with the outlaw nature of his work as a vigilante. He sees his work as necessary to protect the lives of others, but he would rather be able to live within the law. But he finds he can't.
In The Dark Knight, Wayne uses all the tools at his disposal to fight a war against crime and terrorism (as personified by the Mob and the Joker played by the late Heath Ledger). But he comes to realize there will be a cost to such a battle not just for himself, but for those who join him in the battle. And he agonizes over the potential costs in the lives of others. (Petit in Man on Wire rarely seems concerned by the costs paid by those who join him in his quest.)
These moral quandaries, never fully answered, are what make The Dark Knight a little more thoughtful that the average summer superhero epic. And it was odd to find that the fictional blockbuster was more serious on a moral level than the documentary from the BBC and Discovery Films.

(Beneath the Thrill, a Lot of Sadness)
『I was lured into seeing this film by my teenage son, who is a circus acrobat by genetic conviction as surely as Philippe Petit was a high-wire walker and as I am a musician. I would never have entered the theater if I'd known what I'd be seeing. I have a pathologically empathetic response to films. When I was a little kid, I used to shout out warnings to Tweetie Bird when the cat got near. During fight scenes, my whole body twitches and my wife gets nervous for the safety of the unsuspecting head in front of me. I'm a climber in real life. I've been to the summit of Annapurna. But my blood pressure rises and I tremble with acrophobia at Hollywood simulations of climbing. This film Man on Wire took two years off my life, I'm sure. It's that intense, with its coy intersplicing of still photos and super-eight footage of Petit in mid-air and lovely slow talking-head interviews of Petit and his accomplices, years later, clearly establishing that they all survived to tell the tale.

Those interviews of middle-aged daredevils, reminiscing about their greatest caper, were as intense for me as the dodgy accomplishment of the adventure. It was literally the end of a love affair with life for all of them, something "too hot not to cool down," an overture too overwhelming to be followed by a mere opera. When Petit's boyhood friend broke down in tears at the waning of their friendship, when Petit's wife-the-love-of-his-life felt the reality that his life no longer needed hers, the whole social cost of Petit's obsession moved me also almost to tears. Hey, I might have cried if my heart had slowed down to twice normal. I felt an urge to grab my son and hug or shake him, saying "don't let your art be more to you than your life."

There's more to this film than a mere victimless heist thriller.』

(FANTASTIC)
『A MUST-SEE FILM, simply an inspiring, amazing masterpiece. ALSO READ PHILIPPE'S WONDERFUL BOOK; his story transcends words and transports you to a place of rare passion, beauty and possibility. Soaring! I remember this story just after it appeared in the New York Times back in 1974 and filed it away in my mind, wondering when the whole story might be told by the man who did it. Thank you Philippe for sharing your story with us in your own time. I look forward to meeting you some day... Highest regards (no pun intended), Matthew Cross, [......]』

("When I see three oranges, I juggle; when I see two towers, I walk.")
『"I observed the tightrope 'dancer'--because you couldn't call him a 'walker'--approximately halfway between the two towers. And upon seeing us he started to smile and laugh and he started going into a dancing routine on the high wire . . . And when he got to the building we asked him to get off the high wire but instead he turned around and ran back out into the middle . . . He was bouncing up and down. His feet were actually leaving the wire and then he would resettle back on the wire again . . . Unbelievable really . . . everybody was spellbound in the watching of it."-- NYC Police Sergeant, Charles Daniels.

Directed by James Marsh (known for his cult film, Wisconsin Death Trip), Man on Wire is an inspirational documentary about Philippe Petit's daring high-wire walk between the World Trade Center Twin Towers in New York. It has since been called "the artistic crime of the century." Petit, who was 24 years old at the time, is a French high-wire artist (a "funambule") and Paris street juggler who made history by walking (illegally) between the Twin Towers on August 7, 1974 without a net. In the course of his half-hour walk, Petit sat on the wire, gave a knee salute and, while lying on the wire, spoke with a gull circling his head. (While the Twin Tower walk now defines him, Petit has also made tightrope walks using the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Louisiana Superdome, the Hennepin County Government Center, and the Eiffel Tower. He also juggles for children in Central Park.) Why did he do it? "L'art pour l'art," Petit explains, art for art's sake. Marsh describes his film as a heist movie (a "rififi") about Petit's "incredibly beautiful" "coup." The breathtaking film features a soundtrack drawn from the Michael Nyman album, Nyman/Greenaway Revisited, which seems as though it were written for the film. Marsh's film will appeal to the children, clowns, magicians, athletes, and dancers in all of us.

G. Merritt』

(I saw it and still don't believe it)
『I saw this movie in a local theater about a month ago and I can't stop thinking about it. It's a good, well constructed documentary film that uses some recreated scenes as well as current interviews and period film and photos. The story of how Phillipe Petit planned and executed a tightrope walk between the twin towers is laid bare. 1350 feet in the air, 200 feet across. It was hard to believe even as I watched it. It seemed inspiring and insane all at once. I don't know if he's courageous or crazy but I suspect the answer is both.

If this movie sounds the least bit interesting to you, go ahead and get it. You won't be disappointed. If I hadn't seen it on the last night of it's run at the theater I might have gone more than once.』

『On August 7th 1974, a young Frenchman named Philippe Petit stepped out on a wire and illegally rigged between the New York's twin towers. After nearly an hour dancing on the wire, he was arrested, taken for psychological evaluation, and brought to jail before he was finally released. This documentary complies Petit s footage to show the numerous extraordinary challenges he faced in completing the artistic crime of the century.』
『Native New Yorkers know to expect the unexpected, but who among them could've predicted that a man would stroll between the towers of the World Trade Center? French high-wire walker Philippe Petit did just that on August 7th, 1974. Petit’s success may come as a foregone conclusion, but British filmmaker James Marsh’s pulse-pounding documentary still plays more like a thriller than a non-fiction entry--in fact, it puts most thrillers to shame. Marsh (Wisconsin Death Trip,The King) starts by looking at Petit's previous stunts. First, he took on Paris's Notre Dame Cathedral, then Sydney's Harbour Bridge before honing in on the not-yet-completed WTC. The planning took years, and the prescient Petit filmed his meetings with accomplices in France and America. Marsh smoothly integrates this material with stylized re-enactments and new interviews in which participants emerge from the shadows as if to reveal deep, dark secrets which, in a way, they do, since Petit's plan was illegal, "but not wicked or mean." The director documents every step they took to circumvent security, protocol, and physics as if re-creating a classic Jules Dassin or Jean-Pierre Melville caper. Though still photographs capture the feat rather than video, the resulting images will surely blow as many minds now as they did in the 1970s when splashed all over the media. Not only did Petit walk, he danced and even lay down on the cable strung between the skyscrapers. Based on his 2002 memoir,Man on Wiredefines the adjective "awe-inspiring."--Kathleen C. Fennessy

(Eye Candy)
『I never missed an episode when this was on TV and I plan to buy a copy when it's released. That in mind, it is with a great fondness in my heart that I say that this show is one of those car wrecks that you're embarrassed to admit to people that you like. Very entertaining and fun to watch (Josef gets all the best lines) but Mick gets his behind handed to him at least once an episode, causing one of my friends to remark that he's the only vampire in history who really should carry pepper spray.』

(I just do not know what is the problem with CBS)
『This not just one excellent, original show CBS has cancelled. By count this is at least number two in the very recent history. It seems as though in order to be a successful series on CBS, the letters "CSI" must be tacked on somewhere in the title of the show. Jericho was one of the best shows on when it was cancelled not once, as painful as that was but twice.

I cannot say enough about the show MOONLIGHT. It was original in the way it showed that being a vampire is not all good as some shows have attemped to show. You lose all your loved ones, at some point you have to end relationships/friendships because the lack of aging cannot be explained. The relationship between Mick and Beth was shown with sensitivity, and the yearning that only a relationship with these complications can be no matter how much they love each other.

I am more disapointed this show has been cancelled, as much as any other, in the years I have watched television.
GO, CSI MOONLIGHT AND CSI JERICHO!!』

(Hooray! Moonlight lives (a little longer)!)
『Unlike the "vamps" around which the show centered, Moonlight had an inexplicably short life (CBS execs=imbeciles). Along with the "Sarah Connor Chronicles" (which did survive into another season), Moonlight was far and away the best program last season! Clever, creepy and charismatic all at once, with its old detective movie overtones blended smartly with modern settings and music, it seemed to have a little something for everybody (perhaps not quite enough gore for the true vampire afficionado, but, hey, it was prime-time TV)!

This fan is thrilled to be able to own the full season of shows, and hopes that good sales of the DVD set might do what surely one of the largest fan protests since the cancellation of the original 'Star Trek' series failed to do: resurrect the show (either on another network, or a series of made-for-TV movies).』

(Moonlight soon in DVD and in January in SciFI)
『I cannot wait to have my DVD. Of course I'll be glue to my TV on Fridays too to watch Moonlight in SciFi channel . Great Fridays are back !!! This show is great Romance , Action, Humor , great music....I just cannot wait for January!』

(CBS really screwed up yet again and misjudged their audience!)
『The sad thing when CBS suits pulled this show, they're excuse was they wanted to find a show that pulled in more woman....HELLLLLLLLLLLLO??Did any of the so-called brains behind programming over there pay any attention to the ratings? And how many women were watching this show..mainly due to Alex? And then they put another show in its place and now thats been axed too.....I really have my doubts about the intelligence behind the CBS programming from the Prez all the way down. Had they kept this show on--following Ghost Whisperer (which was the perfect match of two shows) they'd have a bigger following especially on the heels of the giant sucesses of True Blood and Twilight. I thought these top-paid brass at the Networks were supposed to be smart enough to think these things through...or maybe they are so much like our soon to be former President of the US--shoot first then deal with the problem....so take a show off due to just being panicky...then find out later you shot yourself in the foot...or got a big neck bite!!! And could have had a goldmine! Man good thing Seinfeld never ended up on CBS--those idiots would have cancelled it after two episodes!!! CBS is the loser here.』
『Any private eye knows a lot about other people's secrets. L.A. private eye Mick St. John (Alex O'Loughlin) has a secret of his own. He’s a vampire, dwelling in a covert netherworld complicated by friendship with an undead finance honcho (Jason Dohring), memories of the alluring ex- wife (Shannyn Sossamon) who turned him into a vampire, and a relationship with a human (Sophia Myles) he feels drawn to protect – and maybe to love. But no matter how tempting, Mick knows a vampire-human romance is eternally dangerous. This 16-episode, 4-disc set of the series voted the 2008 People's Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama is a sure entertainment bet for all who like their vampire stories sleek, intense and passionate.』

(Do not watch with parents)
『I had the good fortune of watching this with my friend instead of mom and dad. It was funny, but got kinda ridiculous in spots. Definitly the kind of film I could watch once, maybe twice, and thats it.
Overall, it was a decent outrageous will ferrell/john c. reilly film, and should viewed with caution...』

(One Of Will And John's Best!)
『regardless of what some people might think...this movie was BRILLIANT...it was hilarious and cute and silly. not to mention when you get these two together , hilarity ensues....it has what i like to call OLD SCHOOL humor...because that was another gem by ferrel but this one is just so outlandish and witty...its worth watching over and over again..if u love to laugh...GO BUY IT! i am for sure :)』

(Funny but not the funniest)
『Well, this movie was pretty funny. But it still is no Old School that's for shore. Basically there isn't much too this plot, 2 40 year old men living together as step brothers and acting like immature idiots. The best part of this movie in my opinion was when Will Ferrel and John C Riley make a music video. Now with that being said, I'm going to just give you all an analysis of comparison with this movie to all the other Will Ferrel movies:

Step BrothersStep Brothers=Semi Pro (Well I thought semi pro was better)
Step Brothers=Talledaga Nights
Step Brothers>Anchor Man (But I guess I could see why some people would like Anchor Man better)
Step Brothers>Blades of Glori
Step Brothers>Kicking and Screaming

But if you don't like Will Ferrel, I would not recommend this movie.』

(Men will be boys)
『"Now look at them yo-yo's that's the way you do it
You play the guitar on the MTV
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Money for nothin' and chicks for free"
(Dire Straits)

Well - at least the money for nothin' part is applicable, if nothing else.

Short Attention Span Summary (SASS):

1. Will Ferrell plays Brennan Huff, a 39 year old unemployed man-child with arrested development who lives with his mommy (Mary Steenburgen)
2. John C. Reilly plays Dale Doback, a 40 year old unemployed only child with arrested development who lives with his daddy (Richard Jenkins)
3. Ferrell and O-Reilly make Owen Wilson and Matthew McConaughey look classy in similar slacker roles. (You, Me and Dupree , Drillbit Taylor , Failure to Launch )
4. The trouble begins when Brennan's mommy and Dale's daddy decide to get hitched, hence the title of the movie.
5. Extended period of hissy fits, pouting, potty humor, fart jokes, indecent language and bad behavior follows
6. Circumstances (and a restless audience) make it necessary for them to grow up in a hurry
7. Movie wraps up within minutes in total absurdity, the highlight being a lip-syncing performance of Andrea Bocelli's excellent "Con te partirò" (Time to Say Goodbye)

This was pretty much over for me in the early stages, as the "men will be boys" punch line wore thin very quickly. The writers opted to substitute crass humor and bad language for true comedy, and even though it has a few funny moments, many scenes are nothing short of cringe-worthy. This would have been better off as a SNL skit than a full length movie.

(Very funny)
『Step brothers is funny simply because of how incredibly silly it is. I found myself laughing through most of the first hour. If it falls down at any point it's when in the last 20 minutes or so the characters have to grow up and learn their lesson etc. But that's all about sticking to the formula and tying the story up. As formulaic comedies go this one is very very funny.』
『Crude, juvenile, and proud of it,Step Brothersstars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as two 40-year-old men, both living at home and leading the lives of 13-year-old boys, who are thrown together when their single parents (Mary Steenburgen,Parenthood, and Richard Jenkins,Six Feet Under) get married. Brennan (Ferrell) and Dale (Reilly) start out hating each other as only teenage boys can--but things get even worse for their long-suffering parents when they become best friends. Step Brothers gets most of its mileage from very lowbrow humor, but hidden among the farts and masturbation jokes is the suggestion that while these guys may be emotionally arrested, so are Brennan's hotshot business executive brother (Adam Scott,Tell Me You Love Me) and his high-fiving frat-boy pals, just in a way that's condoned because it makes money. Also crucial is that Ferrell and Reilly capture adolescence in all its gruesome glory--the awkward insecurity but also the egomaniacal, arrogant self-centeredness. Mind you, this isn't the American version ofThe 400 Blowsor anything--one of the movie's setpieces features Brennan tea-bagging Dale's drum set (and if you don't know what tea-bagging is... well, you will after seeing this movie). All in all,Step Brotherscombines the adolescent humor of producer Judd Apatow (Superbad,Knocked Up) and the comic chemistry of Ferrell and Reilly (who previously costarred inTalladega Nights)--fans of either will find plenty to enjoy. --Bret Fetzer
