Kakaku:Universal Studios Not yet released IPhone 3G used's review (First Feel-Good Musical to Hit the Theatres in a Long Time) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I love musicals. But I am very picky about which ones I watch, and which ones I buy for repeat performances. MAMA MIA was the first musical that multiple generations can appreciate. For the first time, I wasn't the young pup represented in most musicals, but the mother experiencing love lost, found again, and letting go of your children. I found myself amazed with Meryl Streep's voice, cheering on Pierce Brosnan's (and yes, sometimes he hit a sour note, but when your boyfriend is singing to you something really sweet...who cares?)and laughing at how the screenplay writers incorporated particular tunes (Chickadita! Loved it!). I love Christine Baranski and have became a new fan of Julie ___ (can't remember her last name). I would love to have a set of friends like Julie, Meryl, and Christine. I grew up in the ABBA-hit era, but did not "love" them. They were another group that had some great songs. But I did really "love" the way that these songs were not stripped of their melody, and still the words represented something current. There were silly gestures, and some cheesy dances...but I liked it. It made me smile. Like watching your folks dance.... Long and the short...Mama Mia is worth buying. Buy the soundtrack, buy the DVD. Make yourself feel good, without a therapist.』 (Don't care what critics have said... I had fun!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This is supposed to be a musical comedy and it was, so the goal was reached. I'm not a fan of ABBA, but I don't hate their music... besides, it represents a generation, let's say it's part of history. The situations together with lyrics were appropiated, on time... a pretty smart combination. The performers had fun doing this movie and this is exported towards the audience you can notice that, you can feel it, just that fact makes you laugh and somehow be part of that experience. Watch the movie without prejudice and you will enjoy it... I'm definetely buying the DVD.』 (ABBA GOLD) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『What can I say other than the music created by the Swedish musical group nearly 40 years ago is simply to be treasured by all ages. I love ABBA music and waited years for the popular musical Mamma Mia to make it to the big screen and now Mamma Mia on DVD. I have never been a huge fan of Meryl Streep but she gives a wonderful virtuoso performance in this movie. Same for newcomer Amanda Seyfried. Neither actress is known for their singing ability, but are simply messmerizing in Mamma Mia. ABBA's music is timeless and pure joy in this romantic lost and found musical love story. If you look hard one of the original members of ABBA has a cameo in the movie; one of the two "BB" (Bjorn ans Benny) in the sensational signing group's name. The on location photography is beautiful in this movie as the story unfolds. The only fairly deserved criticism is the signing of the leading man (aka 007). Pierce Bronsan is way below par compared to the rest of the cast, but still nails his character's (dramatic) performance in this who's who of a Father-Daughter-Mother love story. If you've seen the play, the story is still the same, if not a bit over the top. Still, the signing and even the dancing in the movie version is just as entertaining and enjoyable to the audience. One thing for sure this movie cries out to be HEARD, so turn up the volume and delight in all the stirring melodies and lyrical music of ABBA. This DVD will make you feel good to be alive, and best enjoyed by singing along. Why not? Celebrate the music of Mamma Mia!』 (Don't feel embarrassed - this movie is a delight!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『As a male, I probably shouldnt say this in public, but I'm a big fan of ABBA's music and you shouldn't feel embarrassed about seeing this film. It is such feel good fun, you will love it. In this brilliant, joyful film adaption of the hit stage show, 20-year-old Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried) lives with her mother Donna (Meryl Streep) on the small Greek island of Kalokairi where Donna runs a hotel called Villa Donna. Sophie is about to be married and discovers that any one of 3 men could be her father. But is it Sam (Pierce Brosnan), Harry (Colin Firth) or Bill (Stellan Skarsgard)? Sophie invites all 3 men to her wedding without telling Donna, who was the singer in a group called Donna and the Dynamos. Glorious music and songs, imaginatively staged numbers and a fine sense of fun are present in this film. I loved it! While Pierce Brosnan sounds awful, and sings like a lawnmower - and Colin Firth sounds rather nasal when singing "Last Summer" on guitar - in a funny way, the casting of actors who sing like us plebs works and adds to the fun and charm of the film. The wedding setting also works because you can imagine everyone at a wedding getting up and dancing or singing. Meryl Streep has an excellent singing voice which will astonish sceptics, and I also thought the actress playing the daughter sang well! The passionate renditions of The Winner Takes It All and Thank You For The Music are my highlights, and yet some uptempo songs are great too (Waterloo, Lay All Your Love On Me etc). I also think there are 1 or 2 touching moments in the film. Yes the screenplay is very cheesy, and it may be camp as Christmas, but you will surely leave the theatre smiling. Delightful. 』 (One of the WORST movies I've ever loved!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Yes, the critics are right. It's cheesy. The plot's an embarrassment. And Brosnan can't sing. But it was GREAT! This movie is meant for audience participation. That's why there are sub-titles/lyrics when the singing starts - Sing along! After the movie was released, ABBA's music had a revival. And this is not really a movie - just an excuse to sing along to ABBA songs. And a reminder of when you used to know these songs so well. And Pierce Brosnan's role in the movie is simply so you'd know that at least you're not the worst singer of the day!』 『The delirious sight of Meryl Streep leading a river of multigenerational women singing "Dancing Queen" is one of the high points ofMamma Mia!, the musical built around the songs of the hugely popular pop group ABBA. The plot sets in motion when Sophie (Amanda Seyfried,Mean Girls), daughter of Donna (Streep), sends a letter to three men, inviting them to her wedding--because after reading her mother's diary, she suspects that one of them is her father. When all three arrive at the Greek island where Donna runs a hotel, Donna flips out and finds that passions she thought she'd laid aside are coming back to life. But let's face it, the plot is not the point--it's a ridiculous contrivance that provides an excuse for the characters to sing the massive hits of ABBA. Regrettably, first-time film director Phyllida Lloyd (who directed the original stage production) has drawn over-the-top performances from everyone involved, even Streep; every production number hammers its exuberance into your eyeballs. Which is too bad, becauseMamma Mia!is a rarity: A middle-aged love story. The kids start things off, but the story is really about Streep and the three guys (former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, former Mr. Darcy Colin Firth, and Swedish star Stellan Skarsgard), as well as Donna's best friends (Christine Baranski, best known from the TV showCybill, and Julie Walters,Calendar Girls). It's a romantic comedy aimed at the people who were around when all these songs were new, and that's an age group Hollywood largely ignores. For that alone,Mamma Mia!deserves to find an audience.--Bret Fetzer』 『 Mamma Mia! Each of the five woefully underseen seasons focused on a different type of investigation, different types of criminal undertakings, and different characters. In all, it is a beautifully woven tapestry of crime in Baltimore. For years and years I thought "NYPD Blue" and "The Shield" were my favorite cop dramas. Then I rented the five seasons of "The Wire" and watched every episode, somewhere around 63 hours, over the course of about 3 weeks. I was sad to see it end. The characters are so rich and layered that you almost believe you are watching a documentary. I would love to own this series, though I don't know if I can justify buying it right now. My local video store has all 5 seasons for rent for the right price so I can rent and watch them pretty much any time I want. But this is the kind of show that I most definitely SHOULD have in my DVD library. The acting is top-notch, not a false note anywhere. Very few actors on this show are familiar or recognizable from other work, so you can easily lose yourself in their character portrayals. One day another show will come along that will top "The Wire". Maybe. But I sure as heck wouldn't bet on it. Count the number of 5-star reviews for this product/series. This isn't a show that can be paid proper homage by simply comparing it to other shows. Dickensian with characters, Shakespearean in writing. Watching the film actually intrigued me enough so I ended up purchasing the series. I know I watched it backwards, but I still loved it all together. I've been patient in waiting for this on Blu Ray and that day has finally arrived. I cannot wait until I get this!!!』 (Great movie now on Blu-Ray) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I watched Firefly when it was on TV and own the DVD set so I was excited about the movie and had high expectations. Those expectations were met, even if they werent exceeded. I want to make this review for people who are not familiar with the show. It helps if you're a science fiction fan, but it's not required. Essentially Serenity is a space opera that blends the setting of the old west with the far future. Sounds like a gimmick? Well it isn't. Why isn't it? Because it's done right. The way the story blends the various elements make it believable that there are some well established planets that are futuristic are "Star Trek"-like and there are other planets that have hardly been colonized, thus more like frontier land. This is where our heroes come from. It's easier to understand and get that feel if you have seen the TV series, but you get enough exposition to keep the new viewers from looking at the movie cross-eyed. The script is, of course, solid. Joss Whedon is known throughout the entertainment industry as being a very good writer. He alone turned a silly B-movie (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) into one of the best-written series on television. Joss' script for Serenity is no exception. You get a good mix of plot twists, comical moments, and drama peppered throughout a story that starts off simple then opens up pretty big. The only negative I will give on the writing is the movie has the pacing and feel of a television show. It reminds me of the same feel I got from Star Trek: Insurrection. It's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just an approach to the movie that's different than what I'm used to from a feature film. Don't let that keep you from seeing Serenity. If it's like a TV show, it's like the best TV show you will ever see on the big screen. While this movie only had a budget about $40 million you wouldn't know by looking at it. They put that money on some fantastic special effects. The scenes in space are beautiful to behold, both the calm ones and the massively large ship battles. By the way I think Serenity does a better job with the big space battle than Star Wars Ep3 (same crazy action, but nowhere near as distracting). I think what helped on the budget was many of the sets were already built from the television show. Still the audio and added effects do stand out in a very good way. The acting is so solid you will find yourself liking more than one character in the movie. The music is a nice blend of that space opera soundtrack and old west. There are some additional features on the Blu-Ray release that aren't on the previous DVD and HD-DVD releases. Here is a list of all of the features (* denotes a feature exclusive to the Blu-Ray): * Alliance Database - Includes dossiers on all of the Firefly crew, profiles on planets, various historical entries, vehicle references and details on the reavers. * U Control - This is broken down into four sections: Mr. Universe Compendium, Digital Tour of Serenity, Picture in Picture and Visual Commentary. It appears these are all interactive features instead of simple menu items. * BD Live: My Scenes Sharing - It's part of the new BD Live set of features and is supposed to let you share your favorite scenes of the movie with your friends. Feature Commentery with Writer and Director Joss Whedon - I am guessing this is the original commentary. If it is he gives a lot of director-type information like lighting and what camera lenses they used, but mentions nothing in lines of background info on the story. Joss also self-depreciates himself a lot on the commentary. First its entertaining that he can crack wise on himself, but it eventually gets old. Feature Commentary with Joss Whedon&Cast Members Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau and Ron Glass - Again not sure if this is the same as on the DVD version. They did a lot of cutting up in that one. Fun to listen to for a while. Deleted Scenes with Optional Commentary by Director Joss Whedon - some of these scenes are nice and some are so-so. The good ones are so good I really hope Joss decides to do a director's cut DVD and put some of those scenes back in. Future History: The Story of Earth That Was - Interview with Joss Whedon on how he got Firefly off the ground and so forth. What's In A Firefly - Essentially a featurette on the special effects of the movie. Re-Lighting The Firefly - Little documentary on the canceling of Firefly and how it came back to life in the form of this movie. Almost a tear-jerker for fans who experienced it firsthand. A Filmmaker's Journey - A more in-depth documentary on the creating the movie. Includes some nice details on the actor's and how well they work together. We'll Have A Fruity Oaty Good Time! - Mini-doc on the creation of the crazy commercial that River went nuts after watching. Comes with the complete commercial. Extended Scenes - Four scenes in the movie in their extended glory. don't expect anything massive. These extended scenes aren't longer by much. I have no idea why Joss doesn't just put these in the disk and call the movie the extended edition. Oh well... Take A Walk On Serenity - A snarky tour of the set with the director and actors. The Green Clan - Documentary on Jeff Green the cinematographer. Session 416 - All five web videos on River's final sessions at the academy they released prior to the movie. On top of all that you get 2.35:1 1080p video and lossless 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. That in of itself is worth the double dip for current Serenity owners. The one thing I don't have info on is whether or not the Blu-Ray release will also have the outtakes. No bid deal as they weren't all that funny and was just the actors goofing up their lines and cursing about it. These documentaries are a mixed bag for me. Having seen the documentaries in the Firefly DVD I can tell these are lacking somewhat. They are still good documentaries. Just not as good as on the TV DVD set. 』 『Serenityoffers perfect proof thatFireflydeserved a better fate than premature TV cancellation. Joss Whedon's acclaimed sci-fi Western hybrid series was ideally suited (in Browncoats, of course) for a big-screen conversion, and this action-packed adventure allows Whedon to fill in theFireflybackstory, especially the history and mystery of the spaceship Serenity's volatile and traumatized stowaway, River Tam (Summer Glau). Her lethal skills as a programmed "weapon" makes her a coveted prize for the power-hungry planetary Alliance, represented here by an Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who'll stop at nothing to retrieve River from Serenity's protective crew. We still get all the quip-filled dialogue and ass-kicking action that we've come to expect from the creator ofBuffy the Vampire Slayer, but Whedon goes a talented step further here, blessing his established ensemble cast with a more fully-developed dynamic of endearing relationships.Serenity's cast is led with well-balanced depth and humor by Nathan Fillion as Captain Mal Reynolds, whose maverick spirit is matched by his devotion to crewmates Wash (Alan Tudyk), Zoe (Gina Torres), fun-loving fighter Jayne (Adam Baldwin), engineer Kaylee (Jewel Staite), doctor Simon (Sean Maher), and Mal's former flame Inara (Morena Baccarin), who plays a pivotal role in Whedon's briskly-paced plot. As many critics agreed,Serenityoffered all the fun and breezy excitement that was missing from George Lucas's latter-dayStar Warsepics, and Whedon leaves an opening for a continuing franchise that never feels cheap or commercially opportunistic. With the mega-corporate mysteries of Blue Sun yet to be explored, it's a safe bet we haven't seen the last of the good ship Serenity.--Jeff Shannon』 『 Serenity [Blu-ray] 』 『 Firefly - The Complete Series 』 『 The Mummy [HD DVD] 』 『 Those Left Behind (Serenity) 』 『 Firefly: The Official Companion: Volume One 』 another good item omega fetish『 The Magic of Paint- Choosing Wall Colors for Your Home 』 East Coast Video In stock soon. Kakaku:Paraen IPhone 3G used's review (The Final Gift...) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This review refers to the Three Colors Trilogy DVD To give this trilogy 5 stars hardly begins to express the way I feel about all three of these films. The illustrious career of masterful film maker Krzystof Kieslowski is capped off by this wonderful gift he has left us with. Those of you that have seen it will understand what I mean when I say that once you have viewed these films, and the characters in them, they will stay with you always. Although told as three separate stories "Blue", "White" and "Red" (the order in which they should be watched ), you will find a connection of life and happenstance relating to the main characters of each story. It should be viewed as one long story. Think of it as if going to a fine dining establishment, where the chef has prepared each course to compliment the other. In "Blue", we get lost in Julie's world(Julitte Binoche), a woman who has lost all that is dear to her in a horrible car accident. Her husband, an acclaimed composer and her little daughter gone forever. She tries to shut herself off from the world, shedding material possesions and shunnung her friends, but is drawn back into life by some revealing facts she has learned about her dead husband. "White" will draw you into it's web of intigue and passion, as a Polish man(Zbigniew Zamachowski) plans the ultimate revenge on his beautiful French wife(Julie Delpy)that he has lost but still loves. Kieslowski adds a wonderful touch of humor to this one. "Red" is the story of chance meetings and fate. Do they happen by coincidence or do we unwittingly make our own destinies? Valentine (Irene Jacob) is a beautiful young model who's life takes a turn in a new direction when she accidentally hits a dog with her car. The dog belongs to a mysterious older man, whose past may be the answer to her future. I have only given a short synopsis of each story, as they must be viewed fresh by the first time watcher. You will find them an experience you will want to relive soon and often. Kieslowski's unique film making style combined with the intricate camera work of Piotr Sobocinski, the lulling music of Zbigniew Preisner, beautiful screenplays by Kieslowski and Piesiewicz and a cast that turns in no less than stellar performances will move you like no other film ever has. I used to watch these films, whenever they appeared on my cable Independent Film Channel. I can think of only one other film that has had such a personal effect on me. That is "Schindler's List". If you have not seen these stories and you really enjoy fine film making give these a try. I hope you will enjoy them as much as I have. Thanx....Laurie the wonderful soundtracks:Bleu: Bande Originale Du Film- White: Bande Originale Du Film - Red: Bande Originale Du Film』 (Red, white, blue) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Around here, red, white and blue are known as the colours of the American flag, and they are also the colours of the French flag. But they also are the names of the late Krzysztof Kieslowski's brilliant "Three Colours" trilogy. This man hasn't gotten the acclaim of more prominent European directors like Tom Tykwer, but his "Three Colors" trilogy has a delicacy that most directors can only dream of. Beautiful, painful, artfully shot, it's a visual feast for anyone who has an appreciation for beauty, subtlety, and good direction. In "Blue," Julie de Courcy (Juliette Binoche) and her family are in a car accident when their brakes fail. Julie is injured, but her composer husband and their daughter die. She can't bring herself to commit suicide, but neither can she just go home and get over it. So instead she leaves her palatial house in the country after a night with her husband's old friend Olivier (Benoît Régent), who has been in love with her for years. Julie arrives in Paris with nothing but a blue cut-glass lampshade, takes back her maiden name, rents an apartment, and tries to leave her old life behind. Though she says she doesn't want love or friends (because they are "traps"), she befriends a promiscuous young woman and is pulled back to Olivier when he starts to finish her husband's unfinished work. In turn, Olivier reveals to her the side of her husband she never knew -- the other woman he loved. "Blanc" is more of a comedy than a tragedy, but there is an element of sadness as well.Hairdresser Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski) is being coldly divorced by his beautiful wife Dominique (Julie Delpy) because she is sexually dissatisfied with him. She also strips him of his money and possessions, leaving him playing pitiful music at the subways. What's more, she rubs it in his face that she's now having sex with other men. Things can't get worse, right? Wrong: Karol goes back to Poland and ends up getting beaten up and robbed. Via some not-so-legal methods, Karol builds himself an impressive fortune and becomes determined to get back at his cold, manipulative ex-wife. Amid a web of killing, seduction and faked death, Karol finds the perfect method to bring Dominique down... And "Rouge" is the color of love. On her way home from a modelling session, Valentine (Irene Jacob) accidently runs over and injures a pregnant dog. The owner is Joseph Kern, (Jean-Louis Trintignant) an embittered, cynical ex-judge whose years of condemnation and acquittal have left him spiritually adrift. He now spends his time alone in his house, wiretapping the phones of his neighbors and predicting what will happen in their lives. After Valentine expresses disgust at Joseph's activities, he turns himself in to the authorities. Their friendship grows into a bond of differing values and unhappy histories. As Valentine prepares to leave for England, the judge reveals the tragic circumstances of his early life -- a tragedy mirrored by some of the people he has been spying on. The three colours of the French flag symbolize liberty, equality and fraternity -- and these are echoed in the stories of Kieslowski's films. And each of the three movies has its own "feel" -- "Blue" is cool and sensual, "White" was sharp and sexy, and "Red" has a sweetness and richness that is truly moving. And while most directors are just boring when they do slow, arty direction, Kieslowski infused his direction with sensual beauty and endless light and colour, like a painting come to life. And he intertwined many symbolic images and lingering threads from one movie to the next, whether it's an old lady recycling bottles or a rather surprising finale for "Red" that brings all three movies' protagonists together. And he saturated the movies with the colour of their title -- blue is sadness, depth and beauty; white is beautiful and pure, stark and blinding; red is passion and warmth. While this may not have been Kieslowski's intention, the constant presence of these colors (a bridal gown, a swimming pool, and so on) add an extra dimension to the emotions in the story, especially the first. Juliette Binoche is an extremely good actress, and this movie uses her expressiveness as most movies don't. Zamachowski brings an element of humanity and poignancy to what could have been an idiotic character, and I never felt anything but understanding for this guy. And Irene Jacob brings a sweetness and innocence to her role as Valentine (aptly named, considering the title of the movie she stars in) that is rarely seen in modern movies. Kieslowski was an unusual and extremely talented moviemaker, and his "Three Colors" trilogy -- "Bleu," "Blanc" and "Rouge" -- is an exceptional piece of work. We shall not see his like again.』 『RED: Nominated for 3 Academy Awards (Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography, 1994) Red stars Irene Jacob (Victory, My Life So Far) as a young model whose chance meeting with an unusual stranger leads her down a path of intrigue and secrecy.
