Granted the plot, what there is of one, is rather thin, it is splashy good fun directed by the dependably versatile Michael Curtiz (Casablanca) with several Irving Berlin standards and four superb variety performers in their prime. As much as Capra's film is an annual tradition, it is really this film that I look forward to the most of all the holiday classics.
The storyline focuses on two former soldiers, Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, both song-and-dance men who become best friends when Davis saves Wallace from a falling building during WWII. After years of post-war success on Broadway and the nightclub circuit, they become reconnected with their gruff but lovable former army commander, General Waverly. The general now owns a Vermont ski lodge, but he is treading water financially since there is no snow as Christmas approaches. As it turns out, the Haynes sisters, Betty and Judy, are playing the lodge during the holidays, and of course, romantic entanglements ensue all the way through the big finale when all four star in a show that they hope will save the general's lodge.
All of this seems rather incidental to the musical numbers showcased in the then-revolutionary widescreen process called VistaVision. The most relaxed of actors during this era, Bing Crosby plays Wallace with his naturalélan, and he croons the classic title tune early on and leads the group sing of the same song at the end. In contrast, Danny Kaye plays Davis with his mercurial style intact, though compared to his other films of the period, he is relatively subdued here. With her smoky, silken vocal skills on display, Rosemary Clooney plays Betty, Wallace's love interest, with aplomb and complements Crosby easily on "Count Your Blessings (Instead of Sheep)". She also delivers a nice torchy Berlin tune with "Love, You Didn't Do Right by Me" despite some silly man-choreography.
I have to say the most impressive performer of the quartet is Vera-Ellen, a phenomenal dancer who was the equal of Astaire and Kelly at her peak. She makes even Kaye look good in their musical duets - "The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing" and the amusing Martha Graham riff, "Choreography". However, her best numbers are with dancer John Brascia - the elaborate "Mandy" number where her pliable, slender frame seems to be everywhere on the screen, and the brief rehearsal number, "Abraham", where she and Brascia snap, pop, clap, kick and swing with unerring military precision. It's worth noting that her singing is dubbed by vocalist Trudy Stevens, which is pointed out by Clooney on the less-than-informative audio commentary track in the 2007 DVD package. Much better is the 16-minute retrospective interview with Clooney where her natural sense of humor emerges.
There are other numbers worth mentioning in the movie - the duet, "Sisters", done first straight by the women and later by the men as a comedy routine in half-drag (Kaye steals this bit handily with his over-the-top clowning); the foursome on the vintage Berlin "Snow" and "Gee, I Wish I was Back in the Army"; and of course, the title tune at the end. Way over on the sidelines, Dean Jagger lends his warm dignity to the role of the retired general, and Mary Wickes plays Emma the housekeeper in her typically sarcastic manner. Special mention needs to be given to Loyal Griggs's vibrant Technicolor cinematography, which makes the entire movie look appropriately like a bright red candy box, and the print transfer in the DVD almost fully captures the original visual quality. This is undemanding entertainment and a dependable holiday classic that feels like a favorite well-worn blanket.』
(A Classic Movie we still enjoy!) 『My family loves this movie. We loved to watch it on cable every year, but recently purchased it to watch it in full anytime of the year!! Definately a classic that everyone still enjoys for years to come!』
(White Christmas) 『This is my all time favorite Christmas movie. I have watched this movie every year since I was a kid and I am 55. It is clean and happy and brings me such wonderful memories of Christmas's gone by. In todays crazy mixed up world, it helps me remember a happier, slower paced, kinder, cleaner, less complicated time. I can't imagin anyone not liking it. I watch it several times each Christmas season!』
(You need to understand the time) 『Those who find this insulting need to understand how things were at the time it was made. Appreciate that we have made a lot of progress since then, but to deny the absolute magical quality of this film would be a waste.
This movie is a perrenial classic in my family. We watch it every year on Christmas Eve (along with "The Ref"). It takes you back to a time when life was so much simpler. I just adore this movie. It is right up there with Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and many other classics. I cannot recommend this highly enough.』
(A Great Old Christmas Favorite!) 『I grew up with this old Christmas favorite, and it is one of my annual Christmas rituals to watch this film along with some wonderful film versions of Dickens' A Christmas Carol. The music is wonderful, and Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby make a great team, as do Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen. And you can't beat those wonderful Irving Berlin tunes. It takes one back to a more innocent time and helps you recharge and then come back to face today's challenges. Besides, Dean Jagger as the former commanding general turned innkeeper and Mary Wickes as his housekeeper are both great in supporting roles. And the production number, "Choreography", with Danny Kaye at the center of it, is priceless. It's a great deal of fun to watch, and I look forward to it every year.』 『Two talented son-and-dance men (Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye) team up after the war to become one of the hottest acts in show business.』

(Known Non-concert Concert!) 『This "Concert" was MEANT TO BE a low-budget lip-synching videolized images of Celine Dion aimed at the English-speaking North American market in order to introduce this new personality to the public in moving images. It was filmed very early in the 90's, during the time when she began to put out a lot of English language songs, composed specifically to be launched as hits. She was not a mega-star at the time, hence the amateurish production value. When you buy something like this, you just have to be sophisticated enough to realize that this is not a real concert, and just enjoy it for what it is. Yes, the title is a little misleading (ALL advertisements are truth-bending in some way, period!), but it did not say "LIVE concert"...For all we care, it was probably "taped before a live audience." Three-stars for low production value, otherwise, Celine is great as she was.』
(Nice Concert but its obviously made up of tracks.) 『My dad and I have many concert DVD's. This one is alright. The concert is obviously all on a track (except for one song.) I didnt like the way that most of the songs faded rather than ended like a REAL concert should have. Unless you'd like to see Celine live and not hear her live this DVD isn't for you..』
(One of the best concerts) 『Celine Dion has an incredible voice and apartently a good chorographer. The problem wth this DVD is that the person operating the camera needed to quit looking at everything else and focus on Celine! She delivers a wonderful performance just to have it degraded by the people behind the post production. One last thing, I Cant Help Falling In Love Has LIVE after it because it's different than any album version. Also it's very evident that she does sing.』 『Filmed in Quebec in 1995, this concert souvenir captures Celine Dion as she turned the corner from pop contender to platinum princess. Long a star in Canada, and a major draw throughout the Francophone world, the Québecois vocalist was still a relatively new, if increasingly successful, commodity stateside. A clutch of single hits, augmented by two big soundtrack themes, hadn't entirely erased the suspicion that Dion's career was being bolted together on an assembly line not far from Mariah Carey's--apart from frequent overlaps in production support, both singers relied on similar mixtures of sweeping ballads and crisp, uptempo dance workouts, and both were notorious for their vocal gymnastics.
The Colour of My Loveworks hard, as does Dion, to convince us she's already a major diva, and the approving crowd of hometown fans obviously agrees. Dion, her hair cropped in a shorter, curly 'do, is equally chic in black suit or blue gown, a troupe of dancers invades for strategic uptempo pieces, and her studio duet partners for both "When I Fall in Love"(Clive Griffin) and "Beauty and the Beast" (Peabo Bryson) pop up to repeat their roles. The star attacks each song with laser-like focus, and she radiates a sense of theatrical drama.
Technically, however, the special suffers from direction that mistakes swooping camera movement, sudden zoom shots, tilted frames, and other concert video clichés for real drama. More problematic is abundant evidence of considerable post-production sweetening in the star's vocals--like other post-rock divas with arena-sized ambitions, Dion (or perhaps her producer) is apparently determined to reproduce the surreal sonic precision and scale of the records. It's a slippery slope that tempts perfectionists to leave less and less of the actual performance on the soundtrack, even though Dion's huge voice would still be impressive (and possibly more exciting) if rendered without such editorial tweaks.--Sam Sutherland』

Usually ships in 1 to 2 days IPhone 3G used's review (Not bad, but not incredible either) 『Documentaries/compilation films like this one are important because most people are so used to thinking of the events of WWII in black and white. That era exists in black and white in the consciousness of many people, even though it obviously happened in living color to those who actually lived through it and haven't gotten the story through archival footage. Seeing these events in color can give them an immediacy and vibrancy not always available in black and white, even though the color spectrum in film at that time wasn't as wide as it is today. However, I agree that a lot of this footage is already available in other DVDs containing WWII scenes in color. And despite the title, most of it consists of the events leading up to D-Day and the events that happened shortly afterwards, like the liberation of Paris. I understand that one can't see a film about a certain historical event in isolation and that one can only really understand it if one is given the backstory leading up to it, but it would have been nice to have seen a little more actual D-Day footage. Surely there exists some more color footage of the landing and the battles than just the meagre stuff here. Although it's also not fair to complain about how there's not a lot of important battle footage, since as it's pointed out in one of the featurettes, real life isn't like a Hollywood war movie. An actual news reporter filming events as they unfold isn't always going to get a good image of something like an explosion or a particular act of heroism by a soldier, or even to capture the most important events at all, busy filming something else and missing all of the fireworks. The narration also isn't particularly exciting or enthusiastic; it seemed to me little more than a monotone, not giving the sense that the narrator were really into this historical event and conveying that interest and enthusiasm to the viewer.
Included as bonus features are interactive maps of the major battles, bios of the major players (American, English, German), short video diaries from three vets, a timeline of WWII (with a sub-timeline just for D-Day), and three featurettes, "The Overlord Experience: Veterans Reflect on the Experience of D-Day," "Media and War: The Impact of Colour Film in Remembering D-Day," and "D-Day's First Battle: The Role of Airborne Troops in Normandy." Overall, it's not the most memorable or indispensible WWII DVD out there, but it's not completely devoid of value or interest either.』
(Nothing much new) 『There's not a lot new here that hasn't been around in previous WW2 in color DVDs released over the past few years. The best piece, which is actually an extra and is five minutes long, covers the pathfinder airbourne troops. Otherwise, this is very average. Note also that the length of this DVD, including all extras, is about 80 minutes, with the main program about 48 minutes.』

(We Don't Like This Ike) 『Great performances by Angela Bassett and Lawrence Fishburne. By now everyone knows the story of Ike and Tina's nighmarish marriage, so the question is how well is it told? The story is told extremely well as Tina even supervised in the production. I have heard that Ike accepted a check for $40,000 rather than sue for damages and that this was the last time Ike and Tina ever spoke. Tina is said to have even avoided Ike's funeral. The only thing I would warn anyone about in this movie is that there are several extremely violent scenes which could be disturbing to some people, most notably a horrifying rape scene. The story is told realistically enough. The beginnings show a nervous and inexperienced Anna Mae anxious to please band leader Ike and to blend in with the other girls in the band who warn rookie Anna Mae about Ike's reputation. His girlfriend's bed isn't even cold before he starts romancing Anna Mae. Ike's ex-girlfriend, Lorraine threatens to shoot Anna Mae, but changes her mind, turning the gun on herself instead, but is so drunk she botches her own suicide attempt. Lorraine goes to the hospital, (she's ok) but Anna Mae is frightened and Ike is upset that Lorraine is just one more person who has turned against him. This sort of becomes a little song and dance that Ike likes to play for people when things don't quite go his way. He tried to help people who have turned on him and each time he tells it, it loses credibility as most of the time it seems to be Ike who turns on others. However, at first, Anna Mae seems to think she is only seeing a more sensitive side of Ike who is still little more than a perfect stranger. Early on in the movie, the band struggles to get gigs and rookie Anna Mae still feels uneasy around the others, but eventually she is accepted into the band, and even becomes Ike's legal wife, a decison she lives to regret as we all know. The band starts to climb the charts, the gigs get better, the money increases, as does the pressure to produce hits. Ike's drug abuse escalates as well as his jealousy at Tina's new found confidence and favor with audiences and producers and fans. While Tina and the others seem to be enjoying the success, Ike spends long hours at the piano and in the studio trying to come up with new hits. Again Ike becomes increasingly difficult to work with and eventhe other band members have a difficult time ignoring the growing tension between Ike and Tina and Ike and themselves, and Ike and the whole human race for that matter. Things seem to come to a screeching halt after a recording session with legendary producer Phil Spector who wants to work with Tina only, an ugly incident in a restaurant and on board an ariline, as well as Tina's unssuccessful attempt to take the kids and go back home, a rape and susequent suicide attempt lead Tina to divorce court. Tina files for divorce and wins easily while Ike is convicted of income tax evasion and possession of narcotics. Tina revives her career solo and the movie ends with 80s Tina making her comeback and winning Grammy Awards in the process.』

(Angela Basset's arms are dyn-o-mite!) 『What's Love Got To Do With It? is the biopic of singer Tina Turner. Angela Basset received an Oscar nomination for her fearless performance, she is a powerhouse! Laurence Fishburne is at his creepiest playing Ike Turner, Tina's manager and abusive husband. This film is a bit much at times but the performances cancel out the soapy plot. Check it out sometime!』 『Experience for yourself the powerful true-life story of Tina Turner -- rock 'n' roll's remarkable and talented superstar. Laurence Fishburne (THE MATRIX) and Angela Bassett (HOW STELLA GOT HER GROVE BACK) deliver winning performances as Ike and Tina Turner -- whose turbulent relationship eventually forces Tina to leave and face the fear, pay the price, and find the courage to believe in herself. Don't miss WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT -- the amazing and uplifting story of one of the world's most exciting, high-energy entertainers!』 『Tina Turner, that dynamic diva of pop/soul/R&B from the '60s to the '90s, sings like a woman whose life story is every bit as rough and tough as her voice. AndWhat's Love Got to Do With It, based on her autobiographical account (inI, Tina, written with Kurt Loder) of her years under the iron fist of her abusive husband and musical partner/Svengali Ike, is further proof of what we've always known about Tina: She's what you call a survivor. The movie is sort of the Disney version of Tina Turner's story--a glossy but thoroughly enjoyable, old-fashioned showbiz biopic with laughs, tears, great music, and outrageous (but faithful) period decor, costumes, makeup, and hairstyles. Our Heroine triumphs not only over the rigorous demands of her career in the music business, but finally manages to bust out of her troubled, violent marriage as well and become her own person. This is a movie that'll have you shouting at the top of your lungs: "You go, girl!"--Jim Emerson』
IPhone 3G used's review (Can't believe my daughter's reaction to Boz) 『My 25 month old daughter LOVES Boz and asks to watch him everyday. The songs on this video are catchy, the concepts are easy for her to understand, and the Christian lessons are simple (definitely not heavy or forced). I love that the Boz videos show Christianity as a perfectly normal, everyday thing with simple prayers and casual talks about God. After watching this once, she knows circles, triangles, and squares and she is more sure of her colors. Success! Perfect for preschoolers, and perfect as far as I am concerned! This one is a keeper, and I want to buy more! My daughter wants to watch this over Sesame Street and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse--now that's saying something!』
(My 13month old loves it.) 『I have this title along with "Friends&Helpers", and "Singing with BOZ". My daughter loves all of them. She was a very clingy baby (still is), but when I put in these DVDs, she barely looks up at me. She can immediately recognize when I put the DVD into the player from the flash screen. She kneels up in the bed and begins to bounce and jump excitedly. I rated it 5 stars just for this alone. I also intentionally went looking for faith-based DVDs and not the ones just to make her smarter. I found that these DVDs had all of the things that I want my daughter to learn. About God, praying, colors, shapes, sharing, helping, etc. I would recommend this series to anyone.
(I didn't like Barney and was glad that my daughter was born way after the Barney craze. BOZ I like and will continue to purchase anything related to it.)』
(Replaced Blue's Clues as Favorite) 『My son LOVES Blue's Clues - but after one viewing of Boz he's hooked - he actually threw a fit when we put Blue's Clues in instead of Boz! Yeah, it is a little Barneyish - but I'm one of the mom's who actually liked Barney, so the sweet positive outlook of the program and the catchy little tunes are quite welcome in my home. My son (he's 2) has been looking all over the house to help Granny find her lost purple gardening glove, finds shapes around the house, and has been searching the sky for rain. I think we'll keep this video around for quite a while.』
(We love Boz!) 『My three year old son loves the whole Boz series. Think high quality computer animation coupled with cute songs and great spiritual values. Within the context of a cute Christian family, this particular video takes the opportunity to view colors and shapes as fun and interesting elements of God's creation without being cheesy or boring. The songs are easy to pick up and sing along with and the characters are adorable and easily likeable. Boz definitely stands out in the Christian kids' video arena, and we hope he's here to stay awhile.』
(Great Values Based Video Series) 『I purchased this DVD primarily for my 18 month old son. I thought he would enjoy it as he grew older if it was too advanced for him now. Turns out that both he and my 5 year old son love the videos and ask for it daily!
The storyline is centered around the relationship between a large green bear who lives next door to 4 year old twin brother and sister and their mother and father. I appreciate the interaction between the parents, grandparents, and twins as well. Sadly, the family unit has been demeaned in mainstream children's shows. Either the parents are missing entirely (Barney, Out of the Box, etc.) or, for older kids' shows, the parents are depicted as stupid or detached (Jimmy Neutron, Fairly Odd Parents, etc.). This series does an excellent job of depicting balanced, loving, supportive parents who are also positive authority figures in the twins lives.
Boz is the bear's name. He is very upbeat, energetic, and positive. Some parents might find this annoyingly so, but, in my opinion, the video is designed for preschool aged children and it certainly seems to appeal to my children very much. My 5 year old watches the videos with a sweet smile (no kidding!) on his face as he experiences the show with them. By the way, my son has seen (and enjoyed) Sponge Bob and Jimmy Neutron, yet he asks for Boz more than anything else.
The value based educational stories are very sweet and well done. This is a Christian video, so there are references to God and faith. The references to God are loving and appropriately interspersed throughout the stories. The subtle references are nice. My son loved finding the cross in the twins' bedroom. The faith references are balanced and (in my opinion) realistic. For instance, along with the cross on their bedroom wall, there are pictures that the children have drawn of super heroes. The focus is not exceedingly on God, instead God is viewed as a normal part of a normal life and referred to at appropriate moments. The primary focus of the inclusion of God is to reinforce how much God loves us.
As for the music, I'll warn you, the songs are very catchy. I catch myself singing them throughout the day whether I want to or not! My 5 year old has found them easy to learn and sing along with too. The music has a full, professional sound.
I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the video. The animation is similar to that used in Disney's "Monsters, Inc." It is well done. The body movements and facial expressions are appropriate and quite realistic.
Overall, I am pleased with the videos. I would recommend them to any conscientious parent who is interested in their child developing a positive view of God and faith while learning and being entertained in the process. 』 『Introducing BOZ The Green Bear Next Door. It's not a connoisseur's guide to wine, it's "Wine for Dummies", people like me, who are enthusiasts, not snobs. It goes over all the basics any ambitious "wino" needs to know: pouring, smelling, savoring, storing, pairing, wines from different countries and their characteristics, grape varietals... a truly thorough presentation packed with tons of useful tips. It's like taking a class because we only hear the sommelier speaking to us for the entire duration, but his approach is very friendly, clear, easy to understand, and not at all pretentious.』
(Good but not great) 『I found the information in this to be modestly useful. Its a good starting point and adequate if you want to just learn basics. I made the mistake of watching it AFTER seeing another more comprehensive DVD on the same subject. So from that standpoint, this was kind of a step backward for me. Aside from being a bit too basic, it only really features the host through the entire DVD. And while he may be a reputable sommelier, listening to just one person's perspective for an hour is somewhat limiting. Especially if you're discussing such a broad topic as wine. So... If you're a beginner, this is a good DVD. But if you know anything about wine, I'd really go with something more in depth (such as "An Introductory Guide to Wine").』 『Wine For Dummies, the visual companion to the acclaimed book with more the 500,000 copies in print, is an accessible, unpretentious "wine lover’s bible" that opens up the world of wine to anyone. The director seems to cater to the celebrities who do cameos here to such an extent that the storyline tries to function like a sitcom. The jokes were either stupid or they required an awareness of pop culture that my preschooler just does not have. "Stiller the Elf" (voice of Ben Stiller) is particularly uninspiring, and having Santa wear fingerless black leather gloves and act in very un-Santa-ish ways turned off both me and my kiddo. I really wish that Kevin Clash (rather than Joey Mazzarino) had produced and directed this one, since he seems to have a much better feel for what parents and their children will be willing watch the fifty or sixty minimal viewings that all Elmo DVDs get.』
(Cute but sends a bad message to kids...) 『This movie is cute... most of the cameos&songs are good. I don't like some of the dialogue. A couple of times during the movie a character starts talking about the "elfin' menace".... Its sounds like hes saying "f-in menace". Another character says something like "not having a snowballs chance in..."&another character pipes in&says something before the character says "hell". Some parents might not care if their kids talk trashy but I do. Its a shame because if they had left out those comments it would definitely be a keeper.』
(Just too cute) 『I bought two of these movies for my younger grandkids. Even the older ones like to watch it. It is a great way to get the little ones into the holiday season.』
(Wonderful Christmas FUN) 『We love this DVD. My son is almost 2 and he is a big Elmo fan...he has wanted to watch this at least once every day since we got it. My husband and I really enjoy it as well (although not EVERY day)! The music is wonderful and the scenes are animated well with extremely bright colors; it is a very up to date Sesame Street production, unlike some of the older DVD's. This will definitely be a Christmas tradition in our home :)』
(VERY GOOD, BUT COULD BE BETTER...) 『The story is very good, but my 4 y/o child and I can't give it the 5 stars.
The main audience of this story is supposed to be young children... some jokes, in my opinion, are waaaayyy tooo complicated for the kiddos. I don't like this "revolutionary" idea of a Santa who likes rock... the rocker Santa was *not* silly; rather, he was simply corny... and it was supposed to be one of the magical moments of the story. something can be funny and still magical.... but that santa?...hmmmm, nop.
Don't get me wrong, the story is very good and my child liked it (let's say that is lacking something.... it's just not having the feeling of a classic Christmas story)... but overall, it's OK. I specially liked seeing so many American celebrities singing so many wonderful songs for the story... but the end is totally messed up... they did a good job putting everything together, so I'll give it 4 stars.』 『Uh-oh, Christmas is in trouble!
