(9-Ball, Corner Pocket)
『Just as a note--my review comes shortly after the death of Paul Newman, and in a sense this is my way to pay tribute to one of the greatest actors of all time. He will be sorely missed.

Fast Eddie Felson (Paul Newman) was once a great pool shark, but that was 25 years ago. Now he's selling liquor, ironically in pool halls, until he stumbles onto Vince (Tom Cruise), an arrogant, young pool hustler. Felson tries to be his mentor, show him the ropes and teach him a thing or two about what it means to be the best. The desire to play was too much for Felson so he pulls a quick one on Vince, and in a turn of events, competes against him in the nine ball championships.

"The Color of Money" is a truly enticing picture. It has a lot going for it...great direction from Scorsese, a magnificent script and brilliant acting. The legendary Paul Newman was so convincingly smooth and charming with his liquor sales pitches that you'd be convinced to buy his booze. In fact, his entire performance seemed to have that quality.

Being that this is a Scorsese picture, you know what to expect in that sense. The cinematography was intriguing and flawless and the entire cast was truly captivating. It's a must have for your DVD collection.』

(Damn good! (But doesn't entirely fulfill its promise))
『There's an admirable economy in the set-up. We see right away that Fast Eddie (Newman, in a reprise of his role from 1961's The Hustler) is still hustling, now off-brand liquor instead of pool, from which he retired long ago. At the same time we meet his love interest, conveniently doubling as the object of his liquor hustling, trying to break through the sales pitch to reach Eddie. We soon see cheap liquor has brought him good money, but it isn't made to appear all that glamorous or enriching in other ways. At the same time we're introduced to Vincent (Cruise) and his girlfriend/manager Carmen (Mastrantonio). The sound of Vincent's "sledgehammer break" (the break being the first shot of the cue ball into the group of nine balls) distracts Eddie from his pitch, and after observing Vincent, Eddie moves in to make a pitch of an entirely different kind. For a few minutes we're being hustled along with Vincent and Carmen. Carmen isn't really so dumb, though, and soon we wonder who will end up hustling whom.

With Eddie as manager/teacher, the trio go on the road where Vincent is to learn to hustle as they work their way to a big score at the national pool championships. Along the way Eddie's own passions, and pride, are rekindled, and he starts to believe he should be pushing the cue stick himself. The trio splits up, to meet again at the nationals.

Among the virtues of the first part of the film, in addition to the very tight script and editing, is that the three main characters are well balanced, each with an interesting and important kind of power and weakness. The emphasis is on psychology and character. As the film enters the final third, there is a shift to the kind of build-up to a show-down that we might have expected from the start. Mastrantonio's character becomes less important, and what replaces the earlier psychological tensions doesn't pay off as well either in terms of depth or excitement. To be sure, there is character development at the end, but some of it's pretty barely sketched. And there's plenty of excitement leading up to the climax, with some impressively edited pool sequences, but the very end is more of a whimper (almost literally, as there's some near-begging) than a bang.

Bottom line: this is an excellent film in most respects, with fine acting from all involved, interesting ideas, intelligent dialogue, exciting sports, and a mixed pay-off. Well worth seeing and owning. The currently available DVD is nonanamorphic widescreen, meaning it has its complete original image but will have black bars on the sides on a wide-screened monitor. The image quality is good; the stereo sound was a bit jarring at first (to me) but quickly became enjoyable in its brightness and fulness. Good music from Robbie Robertson and others.

Some notes. A number of reviewers complain of Cruise's acting, and he often divides audiences in that regard. I think he was a natural for the role, and filled it very well. (I also thought he had the more difficult role in Rain Man, and was every bit as good as Hoffman, maybe better.)

The film avoids almost completely the truly dark side of gambling/hustling, to the point that Eddie openly hands Vincent an envelope clearly stuffed with money at a key point in a way that would have led to investigations, broken kneecaps or worse in real life. Vincent's hustle that led up to this didn't make much sense to me, given the other options available, and not letting Eddie in on it made more sense as a way to heighten the drama than as a rational decision.

The film doesn't draw attention to the different moral/sporting issues involved in different kinds of hustles. Some hustles are used only to build up the bets, but sporting skill is still relied on to get the pay-off. There seems a big difference between that and actually winning money by throwing a game, especially in a major tournament where others rely on everyone bringing their best.

That Eddie had to repeatedly ask a certain character if he was a hustler rang false to me, as the excellent actor who played the character was making it clear to us he was hustling. More subtle direction would have helped make the scene more believable.

About the ending, lack of resolution or open-endedness isn't a problem for me, but it just didn't fit the build-up. Another reel fleshing out the end with material as good as the first part of the film would have made this film great.

I'm among those who would love to see a sequel in Cruise's later years where he passes on the legacy to another hot newcomer.』

(Great movie, Poor DVD)
『The movie itself is great. However, the DVD is of poor quality. It does not have any "extras" either.』

(Great Product)
『The movie I bought was in fantasic shape I would buy from this shipper again.』

(A great sequel)
『A sequel of sorts of Newman's 1960 THE HUSTLER, and a great one. Newman, long out of the pool game now, but still unable to forget it, finds Tom Cruise shooting the daylights out of the game one night and talks the brash young kid into going on the road and becoming a hustler, with Newman as his mentor. Then halfway through the picture Newman gets the bug to play again. He and Cruise meet up in Atlantic City in a match and Newman wins, only he learns that Cruise lost on purpose to collect a bigger debt. Although it's just an example of his pupil learning his lessons too well, Newman is crestfallen; but he refuses to share in the money - thus he's purified under fire and comes away clean. It's a bit of a shock to see the movie shift from Cruise to Newman halfway through, but the ending redeems it. Both Cruise and Newman are simply mesmorizing to watch. Everything in the movie seems to work perfectly: the gritty pool-hall settings, the minor characters (especially Forest Whitaker as a hustler) - everything. Definitely worth a watch.』
『Legendary actor Paul Newman (MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE) and Academy Award(R)-nominee Tom Cruise (Best Actor, 1996, JERRY MAGUIRE) ignite the screen in this powerful drama. Brilliantly directed by Martin Scorsese (GANGS OF NEW YORK), Newman re-creates one of his most memorable roles from THE HUSTLER. As Fast Eddie Felson, he still believes that "money won is twice as sweet as money earned." To prove his point, he forms a profitable yet volatile partnership with Vince (Cruise), a young pool hustler with a sexy, tough-talking girlfriend (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, THE PERFECT STORM). But when Vince's flashy arrogance leads to more than a few lost matches, all bets are off between Eddie and him. THE COLOR OF MONEY will electrify you with its suspenseful story, dazzling cinematography, and dynamic performances.』
『Martin Scorsese handles directing duties in this 1986 sequel to the classic 1961 filmThe Hustler, which marks the return of Paul Newman to the role of pool shark Fast Eddie Felson. Anxious to break into the big time again, Eddie finds a talented protégé (Tom Cruise) to groom; but with the addition of the latter's manipulative girlfriend (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) and the wild streak in Cruise's character, the trio make for a fascinating portrait in group psychology. The cast is brilliant, the script by Richard Price (Clockers) is a paragon of tightly controlled character study and drama (at least in the film's first half), and Scorsese and cinematographer Michael Ballhaus make an ornate show of the collision and flight of pool balls through space--something of a metaphor for the dynamics among the three principals. The film is generally regarded as weaker in its second half, and rightly so, as everything that was interesting in the first place disappears. Still, Newman won a deserved Oscar for his performance.--Tom Keogh

("Miss Celie's Blues"...)
『Okay, so where to start with this remarkable film?...How bout here... Helloooo...Oscar People!...Did you watch this film???...11 nominations and not 1 statue to go down in the books for this beautiful cinematic achievement of 1985? Yes, the winner of the best film of that year, "Out of Africa", was also wonderful and absolutely deserving of all the accolades it received. But there was so many outstanding attributes to this film from Steven Spielberg's artful direction, to the touching performances, to the cinematography and the wonderul music headed up by Quincy Jones, that it is one that more then 20 years later still stands up to repeated viewings and a box of Kleenex. One that is still being talked about, and one that didn't get the recognition it deserved!

Whoppi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover and Margaret Avery, will touch your heart and soul with their incredible performances in this very dramatic story. Sisters Celie and Nettie have each other to love, and it seems that each other, is all they have that is beautiful in the world. When they are torn apart by unfortunate circumstances they must face the world on their own. Celie(Goldberg) is the main focus. She is forced into a situation of an abusive marriage at the early age of 14 and life for her does not get any easier from there. For decades she hopes beyond hope to hear something of her sister Nettie who's last words to Celie were, "Only death can keep us apart!". Celie's character develops quite a strength over the years and she also forms a strong kinship with an unlikely source. It is a film that is unforgettable and once seen, will stay with you always.

Whoppi did capture a Golden Globe and an Image award, and was also recognized by the Nat'l Board of Review for her outstanding work. Mr. Spielberg did not go unnoticed completely, as he was awarded the Outstanding Directoral Achievement in Motion Pictures by the Directors Guild of America. The music captured an ASCAP(Film and Television Music Award). Just see if you can get Quincy's Jones' "Miss Celie's Blues" out of your head after the film!

There are many editions of this film for sale here in both DVD and VHS. Check around for best deals, availability and features you are interested in. Here are a few of the links to check out: The Color Purple, The Color Purple (Two-Disc Special Edition), and The Color Purple (Widescreen Edition).

Every moment of this film is filled with emotion, and it is not without a few smiles as well. Highly recommended....enjoy...Laurie

(The color of life...)
『One of those movies that touches a person differently with each viewing, `The Color Purple' may be a perfect film. It's hard to take, sometimes overly dramatic (this may be uplifting and inspiring in the end, but getting there is a rough journey) but Steven Spielberg almost takes a Ron Howard approach to his filmmaking and creates a film that is dramatic yet heartwarming, with enough elements of purity that make the heavy-handed delivery seem as smooth as butter. Now I have not read Alice Walker's novel, but I really want to now, so I can't say if the film is as faithful as it should have been; but judging the film on its own merit there is no fault I can find, no fault at all.

The film tells the tragic story of Celie Johnson, a young woman abused by her father (birthing him two children) and sold to an older man who wants a woman to help him around the house (he has a slew of children and no wife). Celie takes the place of her younger sister, whom her father is not done abusing, Celie is sold into a life of torment and abuse at the hands of the unhappy Albert (or Mister). The film spans over forty years as Celie grows up reclusive and bitter only to have her spirits and her eyes opened when the boisterous and soulful Shug Avery comes into her life. Shug, one time lover to Albert, has some troubles of her own, but her way of dealing with them far outshine the way Celie has dealt with hers, and she helps Celie to come into her own and take back the life she should have had to begin with.

This is such a beautifully constructed story of oppression, not just by the hands of white men as is so often depicted, but `The Color Purple' paints a disturbing portrait of abuse and oppression within one's own family. Celie is oppressed by her father and then Albert. Albert is oppressed by his own father and his feelings for Shug. Shug is oppressed by the disapproval of her parents and her feelings for Albert and even Celie. The young and defiant Sofia is oppressed by her own actions, which result in her oppression at the hands of those around her, from her husband to her eventual masters. There is a tragic circle of abuse and control that is only broken when these individuals start to think and act for themselves, segregating themselves from the hands of their oppressors and becoming their own person.

This film is aiding by some of the most moving and effective performances I've seen committed to film. Danny Glover is emotionally scaring as Albert, a man confused and embittered by his own conflictions. Adolph Caesar is menacing as Albert's domineering father, and his character helps us to understand Albert, a man who is very hard to understand on his own. Margaret Avery and Oprah Winfrey (both of whom were Oscar nominated) give amazing performances. Oprah is at one moment in-you-face with her abrasive attitude, the next minute concealed and broken. These two variations of character help her build this woman from the ground up. Margaret Avery is beyond fantastic as Shug. The way she effortlessly wraps herself around Celie and dominates her thinking and actions is heart-reaching.

This movie belongs to Whoopi Goldberg though. Yes, Whoopi delivers what may be one of the greatest female performances of all time. She never breaks her characters emotional state, delivering to us a woman who has been conditioned by her surroundings. She is reclusive and unsteady, feeble and alone. She walks hunched and fearful; she speaks soft and unsure. She is afraid to smile. She is afraid to converse. She is afraid to be herself, but when her fire is ignited and her inner person is unleashed she is finally freed from her cage and given the chance to break away from those holding her down. Her final confrontation scene at the dinner table is one of the most earth shattering scenes in my movie watching history. To think that this was her debut performance (as it was Oprah Winfrey's). It pains me when I think of the fact that she LOST the Oscar (I can't believe this went 0/11 at the Oscars).

In the end I highly recommend this movie to any and everyone. This is a truly emotional film that connects with the audience on a deep and personal level. This is not a film about racism. This is a film about oppression, and each and every one of us has been oppressed at one point in our lives. We have not all been oppressed to this extent, but we can all gain strength from Celie's story and can all appreciate her struggle and eventual triumph.』

『Five FULL STARS!
Whenever I'm asked about my favorite movie, it's always a toss-up between Malcolm X and The Color Purple, depending on my mood. I suppose TCP is the best movie tending to be on the girly side while MX is the best on the masculine.
HUGE thanks to all of the actors, directors and producers for making movies that celebrate people of color without the need of the GW Hollywood hero.
We need more movies of substance like these!』

『Steven Spielberg, proving he's one of the few modern filmmakers who has the visual fluency to be capable of making a great silent film, took a melodramatic, D.W. Griffith-inspired approach to filming Alice Walker's novel. His tactics made the film controversial, but also a popular hit. You can argue with the appropriateness of Spielberg's decision, but his astonishing facility with images is undeniable--from the exhilarating and eye-popping opening shots of children playing in paradisiacal purple fields to the way he conveys the brutality of a rape by showing hanging leather belts banging against the head of the shaking bed. In a way it's a shame that Whoopi Goldberg, a stage monologist who made her screen debut in this movie, went on to become so famous, because it was, in part, her unfamiliarity that made her understated performance as Celie so effective. (This may be the first and last time that the adjectiveunderstatedcan be applied to Goldberg.) Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including best picture and actress (supporting players Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Avery were also nominated), it was quite a scandal--and a crushing blow to Spielberg--when it won none.--Jim Emerson

(Smashing movie!)
『This was a great movie; I bought it as a gift for someone who wanted to see John Travolta doing President Clinton&my friend enjoyed it too.』

(A Fun Comedy that Tells the Truth about Politics)
『When I saw this film for the first time my Mom and I both busted out laughing hysterically and after getting the DVD and watching it with an opened mind from start to finish, I have to say that this film is definitely relevant for today especially, with the coming election this November. "Primary Colors" is a film that showcases one Senator's long road to the White House and the many pros and cons behind an unforgettable campaign. Based on the Novel that chronicles the bitter secrets of the Bill Clinton era and what happens on the campaign trail, you begin to see just how far people will go to paint the perfect picture of a presidential candidate. As well as, those who will stop at nothing and risk everything to expose the truth behind the dark facade of an aspiring leader of the free world. From tapping cell phone conversations, digging up the dirt on inappropriate relationships to proving that a presidential candidate is not the father of his babysitter's child. These are the kinds of ill moral issues that often go unnoticed by the public when choosing a truly respectable person for president.
Aside from all the dirt and outrageous ploys that go on behind the scenes with desperate and sometimes unorthodox campaign managers and volunteers, the film's actors serve to tell a very compelling story about what lies beneath the deceptively clean cut and celebrity persona of a willing presidential candidate. John Travolta gives an Academy Award winning performance as a cocky and narcissistic smooth operating Bill Clinton AKA "Governor Jack Stanton." And Billy Bob Thornton has his memorable moments on camera using insanely funny metaphors behind closed doors to protect his boss's eroding credibility in the mist of public scandals and other political calamities that often plague the campaign. Amongst everyone else who is involved in cleaning up after a sloppy Governor's mess, Kathy Bates on the other hand will go to any lengths to expose the truth about why someone like Governor Stanton should not become president. Even if it means threatening to blow a man's family jules off with an unloaded gun.
With all the dark humor and political nonsense aside, this film's story serves to shed light behind a very powerful man's political veil and the kind of desperate measures that people will take to ensure the success of a political victory even if it means destroying one's reputation to get at the truth behind an entire curtain of lies and deception. In the end, before you go to the polls and vote for the next president, "Primary Colors" leaves you with one important message about a presidential candidate, as Rupert Thorne in "Batman the animated series" once said, "The Brighter the picture, the darker the Negative."

(PRIMARY COLORS)
『Great product and great service. Love the movie. It should be right up there with the classics.』

(Feel Good Movie)
『How many times is a political drama called a feel good movie? It may have done bad at the box office, but it was only because people were tired of the Clinton bashing. Yes this movie picks at Bill Clinton's 'bad' habits, but it makes me feel good. Not in the sense that I'm better, but the sense that I can laugh and go through the ups and downs of the movie and come through at the end with a good ending. It makes me want to see West Wing episodes of Jack Stanton's White House. Hands down, I love this movie.』

(Staton or Clinton)
『Travolta does an excellent job of portraying Presidential hopeful Gov Staton which has a very close reality to Clinton in both background and styles. This is a comedy/drama about the campaign trail to the president for a little known southern Governor and all the challenges both in a typical campaign as well as his own (womanizing). All of the acting was very good and the story line was multidimensional, don't be surprised if you have to watch it a couple of times to pick everything up.』
『Based on Bill Clinton's first presidential campaign, a womanizing, charming, and unknown Southern governor runs for president, against all odds.
Genre:Feature Film-Drama
Rating:R
Release Date:4-MAR-2003
Media Type:DVD』

『Based on the novel by Anonymous (a.k.a. political reporter Joe Klein) and released when the Monica Lewinsky scandal was in full swing,Primary Colorsmay have been a case of too much, too soon for many moviegoers, who preferred the real-life Clinton crisis over the movie's thinly disguised "Clintonesque" comedy. The general public felt that the film was exploiting the president's indiscretions, and as a result one of the most critically acclaimed movies of 1998 was a box-office disappointment. But when considered apart from the Clinton scandals and judged on its own considerable merits, this superb comedy-drama provides an illuminating, insightful, and frequently hilarious look at the harsh realities of presidential politics. John Travolta stars as Jack Stanton, a presidential hopeful whose campaign is challenged by dual dilemmas: how to squelch a scandal involving the candidate's alleged sex with an underage girl, and how to handle information that could potentially ruin Stanton's opponent (superbly played by Larry Hagman). Stanton's wife (Emma Thompson) stands by her man despite awareness of his infidelities, but his loyal campaign planners (played by Billy Bob Thornton, Maura Tierney, and promising newcomer Adrian Lester) experience a crisis of conscience. So does one of the Stantons' oldest friends (Kathy Bates, in an Oscar-nominated role), whose sense of betrayal and lost idealism proves too much to bear. Masterfully adapted by director Mike Nichols and his former-comedy-partner-turned-screenwriter, Elaine May,Primary Colorsplays like a sophisticated comedy with loads of memorable scenes and dialogue, but it sneaks up on you with devastating dramatic impact. Anchored by Travolta's superb performance (which is reminiscent of Clinton without being a cheap impersonation), the movie presents a story of great moral complexity and leaves viewers to contemplate their own reactions to the volatile and ethically complicated game of modern politics.--Jeff Shannon

(The Color Purple)
『I have always enjoyed this movie from the first time I saw it to this very day. I have wanted to buy this movie for years and either could not locate a retailer in my area that had it in stock or they wanted just entirely too much for it. The price was most definetly right for a penny pinching mother like myself. I would recomend to anyone to use amazon.com for thier next movie purchase.』

『i could not believe that i was able to get the collectors edition for such a steal. i've always wanted a copy of the color purple but i have yet to find it in stores. thanks amazon!』

(IN LIVING COLOR)
『IN LIVING COLOR SEASONS 1-5. GREAT! REALLY ENJOY SEEING THE PAST EPISODES AND MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS FROM THE SHOW. MONEY WELL SPENT.』

(Great collection!)
『I really enjoyed the show when I was younger and ordered it out of nostalgia.

For the era, the comedy was new and very edgy. Some great young talent was introduced such as Jim Carrey (billed as James Carrey), Jamie Foxx, almost the entire Wayons family, and David Alan Grier.

The down side is that, while the attitudes towards some of the subject matter is pretty over-the-top (depending on one's point of view) and clearly are sarcastic, there is the constant referral to "The Man" as being the sterotyped rich white person who oppressed the minorities on the show. For very impressionable youths of the time, that message got a weekly dose of reinforcement. Having grown up as a poor white kid, "The Man" put everyone down, and not just confined to minorities.

Enjoy it for the visual gags and skits as a whole.

(One of the classics)
『Colors is a classic hood movie. This is the one that still stands the test of time. But what makes Colors so good is that it fouces on the cops and not teenagers as the main characters. Sean Peen is great in the lead as is Robert Duvall as his partner.』
『Academy Award® winner* Robert Duvall (Tender Mercies) and Sean Penn (Dead Man Walking) star in a film that captures the vivid mark that gang life has left upon Los Angeles (The New York Times). Directed by the legendary Dennis Hopper (Easy Rider) and based on a compelling story by Michael Schiffer and RichardDiLello Colors is grimy hard-edged heart-thumping action (Movieline)! Seasoned street cop Bob Hodges (Duvall) and his new young know-it-all partner Danny McGavin (Penn) are forced to work together in the L.A.P.D. s renowned C.R.A.S.H. anti-gang unit. Together they set out to investigate a murderbetween two rival gangs. Hated and hunted by both sides the cops get trapped in the middle of a turf war. With nowhere to turn they are ambushed double-crossed and shot at in a take-no-prisoners street battle. As the violence escalates these two diametrically opposed men must come to terms with oneimportant fact -- to stay alive they must come together!System Requirements: Running Time 120 MinFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: ACTION/ADVENTURE UPC: 027616867711 Manufacturer No: 1002570』
『Robert Duvall plays a veteran street cop assigned to a Los Angeles gang unit. He takes a headstrong young cop (Sean Penn) under his wing as a partner and shows him the ropes on Watts's mean streets. Penn soon realizes that his testosterone-fueled ways and hair-trigger temper won't get him very far when dealing with the gang-ridden neighborhoods of L.A.Colorsis a landmark movie in several respects: it helped bring director Dennis Hopper back into the spotlight after years of self-induced obscurity. Its success at the box office forced Los Angeles's gang problems into the public consciousness and prefigured the next wave of "hood" movies (Boyz N the Hood,Menace II Society,New Jack City) by several years. Though the late-'80s milieu is a bit dated,Colorsis still a vivid, absorbing film. Hopper and screenwriter Michael Schiffer give all the characters a very human dimension and go to great lengths to show gang life from both the cops' and the gangsters' points of view. Wisely, they stir in elements of the cop drama, buddy movie, and action genres, leavened with a bit of humor here and there, while keeping a social conscience. Duvall is excellent as always, as the sympathetic cop, and Penn brings a great deal of depth to what could be an unlikable character. Violent, unsettling, and highly recommended.--Jerry Renshaw
