『I jumped all over this dune buggy as soon as I saw it because RC dune buggies seem to be rare these days. This is the only model that I could find, manufactured by an Asian company. I actually got two of these cars as presents by two different family members, by accident. It is kind of good that I did. I'll tell you why in a minute.

The benefits of this dune buggy are mostly surface. It is large and shiny. It has huge dimpled bulbous tires, and a mean looking suspension system. The moving parts are metal, including a driveshaft that runs the length of the interior of the car, which is impressive, so all four tires turn together. The car itself has a good weight to it, and the plastic body seems durable. The controller that comes with it is a full-sized hand-held trigger-controller with an antenna that is quite long. The battery is heavy, and looks like it means business. Frankly, overall, it looks impressive, but those are only looks.

The drawbacks are these. I "graduated" to this car after a long search to replace an RC dune buggy that I had when I was a little boy, many years ago. Now, these are only memories, but from memory, the dune buggy that I had was about 2/3 the size of this one, and it hauled butt like no one's business, on only the power of a smaller rechargable battery pack. Before settling on this dune buggy model, I first bough one of those RC pickup trucks that you can readily find in toy stores today. I was sorely disappointed, and embarrassed, with how sluggish that pickup truck was. I noticed that the voltage was something like 6 volts, so I decided that if I really wanted to relive my boyhood days with a dune buggy, I would have to drop the cash to get this one, which is of a higher voltage rating. In my mind, higher voltage means more power. I put one on my list, and at my next birthday, two arrived instead.

Immediately, I noticed all the benefits that I listed above in the second paragraph. While the batteries were charging, I looked both cars over from front to back, inside and out, and upside and down. The shiny plastic. The huge tires. The driveshaft and suspension. THIS was going to redeem me.

But, alas, the first kink showed itself quite readily, with the controller. While the controller is a full-sized enormous controller, that dwarfs your hand, the light-weight to it puzzled me. I inspected it, and found the that 9 volt battery goes in the bottom of the stock, and that the trigger seems solid and responsive, and the antenna was quite long, but that the controller itself was mostly empty hollow plastic. It was as if the makers of this unit wanted to make it seem much more powerful that it really was, and made it larger to seem more powerful. Also, up at the top of the controller, behing a sliding door, are a bunch of buttons and knobs that have resistance when you press or turn them, leading me to believe that they controlled something. They did not. They are simply there for decoration. After extending and retracting the antenna only a couple times, it got a kink in the middle, bent, and then broke. I replaced it with the antenna from my duplicate controller. The antenna is quite flimsy.

Once it was powered up, I put the battery in the bottom of the car, turned it on, and took it outside.

The car seemed sluggish. The tires didn't spin-out and spit dirt behind them as they tore up the earth. They just would start to spin slowly, propelling the car forward, as it gradually picked up speed. The turning radius is quite good and tight. I tried to take it up a couple inclines, but it lost power quickly. I would need a good head start to make it up a ramp onto a sidewalk. I took it off the sidewalk, and it slowed down and got stuck in some very timid terrain. It seemed like the short grass itself brushing along the bottom was enough friction to slow it down. The tires are good, and the suspension was very reactive, but after using it until the battery wore down, I just figured that it is slightly underpowered for itself.

Everything about this car was made to be fast, tough, and, well, a dune buggy flying over mounds of dirt - except for the power. It was almost as if the various components of the car were screaming, "Come on! Let's go!", and the battery and motor were saying, "Eh, when we get there."

To try to give it a boost, I'm now trying to find a battery with a higher voltage and amperage, that will fit inside it. Hopefully, that will work, but it will cost me more money. Either that, or I'll have to graduate again to one of those gas-powered RC dune buggies, but that will cost hundres of dollars.』

『I purchased the "Ball of Whacks" this summer at the Portland Art Museum. I bought it for myself but the instant my kids saw it they wanted to play with it too. It has great staying power as the kids play with it just as much now as they did when I brought it home. The pieces are well made and durable but may be a chocking hazard for younger children.
