『Santa Clause brought my two boys one of these each. My boys are ages 2 and 4. They already have the Tonka Toughest Mighty Dump truck and my 4 y/o asked Santa for the tractor to go with his dump truck. Three days after getting it, he left it in the drive way and I ran over it. It barely dented the metal scoop, hubby was able to straighten it out with a hammer. It didnt damage any of the plactic parts at all, apparently the metal scoop protected the rest of the tractor. My boys take these to the park and play in the sandbox. They love these tractors. The only change I would make would be to make the tires a bit tougher, I can forsee those wearing out before my boys do, LOL.』

『We bought this for our son because he was interested in our tools when we would work on projects. After looking around, this looked like the ideal toy, and it's worked out great! The wrench and pliers actually open, the screwdriver works with the nails in the ruler. The belt sings and lights up. The reason I gave only 4 stars is that the hat is too big, and isn't lined. I've lined it myself, so it fits my son's head. Also the tool belt is a little loose when my son wears it...though he's on the thin side. My son will "fix" his toys, and can wear his tool belt for hours...it was a good purchase!』

It is literally just a round, plastic hat. It falls off constantly and that frustrates my son, my husband, and myself. I am looking to replace it with something more kid-friendly. 『I purchased this toy because my son liked it when he played with it at a friend's birthday party. It is a lot of fun from his point of view. No real set-up, fancy rules, or parts to lose, so it is great from my point of view too! We made up our own rules, he who gets bitten first is the winner! 『Candyland has been around forever and you would be hard pressed to find someone who has not actually played it, I know I did when growing up and remember playing it with my younger sister.

I now play it with my 3 year old daughter who loves it just as much. The revised game is a bit different than what I recall, but it has been awhile since I had a copy before I got this one.

It may not keep attention for all youngsters, but as a general introduction to board games it is still hard to beat.』

(How to put SKILL in Candyland.)
『Each player draw a hand of three cards. Play a card out of your hand on your turn, then draw a replacement.

A card may be played on either yourself OR another player. Note that a color card can only move any player forward; this is mainly useful for sticking opponents in the swamp, and so on.

Other players can now send you to the swamp/pitfalls, but on the other hand, it is easier to get out with the greater card choices(It will also be easier to get on the Rainbow Bridge, which seldom happens in the regular game). There will be no more sending yourself back by drawing a special card, but other players will now be dumping the things on you if said things send you back- which should liven the game up.

This variant can teach basic strategy skills, and make the game a little less simple for adults who get roped into it. But beware of teary three-year olds who get sent way back by -mean Mr. Mint- when they are about to win. (That would be -candy hearts- in the old game).』

(Classic game redone badly)
『Candyland is a great first game for children. The redone version of the game with its new illustrations is horrendous.』

(Highly overrated)
『Many adults don't like playing board games. Why? Because they think that all board games are more-or-less nothing more than sophisticated versions of Candyland - games which rely on nothing more complicated than random chance.

The fact is that random chance doesn't make a very interesting game for adults (unless you're making bets, I suppose), and it doesn't make a very interesting game for children either if they're used to games with more strategy involved. (My young nieces, for example, *will* ask a lot for Candyland - but only because I am not willing to play it with them very often.)

Some people think that the lack of strategy makes these games easy for young children, and that's probably true, but it also makes it frustrating for them - they hit a losing streak and they have *no way* to turn it around, and they know that. I have never seen the same frustration with losing in games like Sleeping Queens or Crazy Eights that I have in Candyland - and, tellingly, when my older niece loses Crazy Eights she pouts and then asks to play again. When she loses Candyland, she pouts and puts the game away!

Some chance is good in a game for kids - it levels the game. But I do not think a game that is entirely based on luck is a good idea.

Instead of Candyland, I'd reccommend a game with some level of skill involved - Memory, or Froggy Boogie, perhaps.

There is no reason you and your kids have to be resigned to games of capricious fate.

Edit: I've found out why my niece likes this game at all. It's not for any aspect of the game itself - it's because when she loses or wins due to chance, we have her "draw a bedroom" for herself, or for us. We started doing it because she got too frustrated and upset at losing through no fault of her own.』

『Somebody bought this toy for my daughter's 1st birthday (only it's yellow, not white). It's an okay toy, but the switches and knobs are really hard to push/turn. She is only able to get the blue #3 animal to pop since the button is easy to push. The one that looks like a key is hard to turn, and if you turn it and the animal pops up, you have to turn the key more to get the lid to close. The other switches are really hard to push/pull. My daughter tries to push the other buttons, but it takes a lot of strength to push them.』

(How low does Playskool need to go?)
『I bought this toy for my baby boy. I remember my cousins had it when they where kids in the seventies. After shipping charges I ended paying almost $[...] for it. To my surprise the toy doesn't resemble the picture as much as one would think. It is made of what seems to be PVC (hard and brittle) plastic instead of something a bit softer like most baby toys. The thing comes in an awful tint of yellow that is not quite as bright as it should and has a slight blueish hue that makes it look dirty. Some of the knobs are very hard for little kids to catch on quickly (my kid bypasses those altogether, although I figure he will eventually catch on). There is one that resembles a key and you turn it to make the character pop. The main problem with that one is that you have to mess with the key in order to close the lid with the character again. The craftsmanship is atrocious and I feel ripped-off. I contacted the seller but I do not feel that it is their fault. They only sell the thing they don't make it. After hearing my complaint about the color the seller told me that it also comes in purple. Purple? Can't they think of an even uglier color for the darn thing? All I wanted was the toy in the photograph in proper working order. You figure that is what you would be paying for. Needles to say, I will not be purchasing any more PLayskool products. Other baby toy companies have a manufacturing standard that is far beyond Playskool's wildest dreams. Hasbro should be ashamed of having their name related to such poor quality products. I would not recommend this product to anyone. Better go with the tried and true products such as Fisher Price or Chicco.』

(little play value)
『there are a few things that were recommended in a well known child development book we're reading. they all have what he calls excellent "play value". that means your child is engaged and will return again and again to the toy.

this poppin' pals box is actually mentioned by name. however the author goes on to say the levers and buttons must be hair trigger and easy to operate. at the time of the books writing maybe this was true but our popin' pals box was difficult to operate.

all of the triggers require quite a bit of effort from a small child. we have a girl who is not particularly rough. she tries to move them but has limited success. it's not bolted to the floor so when you apply force the thing moves away. it's hard for a kid to hold it down with one hand and push hard with the other.

also one trigger (the one that turns) has to be just right or the pop up never goes back down.

my advice would be to have your child try one at the store and see if they are engaged and can operate it. if they can't be assured it will spend its days in the heap of other "low play value" toys.

perhaps at one time these were made with hair triggers. maybe there was a design change for cost, or quality control is low.

ahhh! i just re-read the book. they actually say the current playskool toy has this issue and recommend another brand. oops.

one more thing. playskool's rec. ages are 12-36 months. from what i read this is more like 8-14 months. the author talks about how manufacturers routinely overestimate the age ranges. big surprise, right?

『My 3 year old son absolutely loves this rocket. It is very heavy and he likes to lift it up when the recording says 3-2-1. One of the doors comes off constantly, but is very easy to put back on. This is his favorite toy that he got for his birthday. The little astronauts, alien and dog and the land rover vehicle are cute. Inside the rocket is a kitchen, Murphy bed that has a potty behind it and a storage hatch for the land rover. Very cool...great for imaginative play!』

『My 15 month old daughter has absolutely no interest in this toy. We bought this for her when she was around 6 months old or so and she has never played with it. It doesn't do anything. I think there is one spot that will play a little bit of music when you squeeze it, but that's about it. Save your money.』

『This is probably the worst of the Lamaze Toys that I have purchased (granted that I think Lamaze Toys are better than just about any other baby toys). The worm is difficult for my son to grab onto and it doesn't really do that much. The single musical thing is rather quiet. Like the other poster, my son prefers Pupsqueak to this toy. He also likes his Buzz Bug much more than this toy. Inchworm isn't awful and has kept his attention but we've gotten a lot more mileage out of the other Lamaze toys. I'd got with Pupsqueak or Buzz instead.』

I was hoping that there would be a squeek and something scratchy, etc. but we will see! Other than that though it is very well constructed and the colours and very nice and bold.』

『My son is crazy about trucks and firetrucks and like puzzles too, so I thought this would make a great toy for him. As everyone here says it definitely is big for little hands, sturdy and long. But whats firetruck about the puzzle? It looks like ordinary red truck. I would expect the puzzle to exaggerate all things one would see on a firetruck. The ladders (u can hardly notice this), helmets, firefighters, sirens, water hoses, cones, hooks and much more. Its an ok puzzle though, for the price you pay.』

『I bought this puzzle for my grandsons. I decided to do the puzzle myself before I showed it to them. I loved it! When they came over, I gave them the puzzle and they sat down and occupied themselves for quite a while with it (they are 4 and 2). I think the idea of a floor puzzle is unique for children and it allows room enough for more than one of them to do it at a time.
