(Amusing review of French basics)

『This DVD provides both parts I and II of the Standard Deviants' French series. I teach high school French, and my students find the videos engaging, entertaining, and informative. By its nature, this DVD cannot offer the depth necessary to supplant any real teaching (which isn't their purpose anyway); however, it does help remind students of some grammatical and lexical basics they learn in French I. The college-age actors (non-native speakers with some questionable pronunciations here and there but clear enough for their goal) are accessible to my teen students, but their acting is meant to be over-the-top (perhaps to counter boring professors' lectures at some universities). Note that this DVD is not for learning phrases for travel.』

(It's Good for some "basics" as the title states)

『Overall it's decent and interesting to watch. I was actually hoping for more basic vocabulary and common phrases than all the grammar rules they are trying to teach. I just need more "travel/tourist" knowledge. So this seems better suited for someone actually trying to learn the French language for the long haul, not if you're traveling for a week. It's still interesting and slightly corny, but it makes it somewhat fun to watch.』

『I purchased the "Basics" video thinking I was going to get a silly, fun explanation of the basics. It is true that the video focuses on the basics and actually covers the same material our French 1 book does in the first 2 chapters. HOWEVER, I would send this video back if I could for 2 really important reasons:
1. My students fell asleep watching it for about 15 minutes.
2. Even more important - and the most disappointing part of all - the people speaking french had very strong American accents. Even my french 1 students could hear the bad pronunciation. If you are using this to supplement your French program at the High School level, don't waste your money.』

If you're looking to reallylearnthe French language, as opposed to briefly memorizing a few phrases to help you find a bathroom or complain to the doctor of your traveler's stomach, the Standard Deviants have the video for you. TheirFrench, Part Iis a language lesson for the MTV generation. Short segments, funky graphics, and personable youthful teachers make watching this tape entertaining, rather likeSesame Streetsfor grownups. Using the functional approach (making sure people can communicate and accomplish tasks in the new language), the video introduces French with phrases and full sentences, introducing ideas through demonstration. The idea is to help you think in French. Dialogue is clearly transcribed on the screen, so you can see what the words look like, and two cards are included with the tape that give translations of some of the dialogues and useful vocabulary. Note, though, that all of the explanations are given in English, as opposed to an immersion program (meaningallin French, including explanations), such asFrench in Action. Which style works best is purely a matter of personal preference. Skits put the conversations into context and provide levity. Yet, as is clearly stated in the beginning of the lesson, this series is intended to be a supplement to a class, and French really needs to be practiced through speaking and writing. The benefit of video, though, is you can rewind as much as needed to master pronunciation and to let the concepts sink in. The video opens with pronunciation, with close-ups of faces as they pronounce the alphabet to help you learn how to shape your mouth around the French letters. The video then covers a range of topics including -er verbs, gender, articles, adverbs,être, adjectives, pronouns,avoir, numbers,aller, andfaire. While the video could benefit from more native French speakers, this is a delightful introduction to the language and a fun complement to a high school or college French class. The Standard Deviants: French, Part 2
French, Part 2picks up, not surprisingly, where the Standard DeviantsFrench, Part 1leaves off. Using the same functional approach to French, this tape uses fun graphics, humorous skits, transcriptions, and translations to help you learn the language (and once again the video begins with the caveat that these videos are intended to supplement, not replace, a class). Two cards are included with the tape that give translations of some of the dialogues, conjugations, and useful vocabulary. Beginning with a subject near and dear tole français, we visit a café where we learn about food while also discoveringle partif,prendre, and different ways of asking questions. Three more sections cover describing yourself, shopping, and morning and evening rituals, covering topics such as irregular verbs (includingdécrire,vouloir, anddire), regular verbs, more adjectives and adverbs, conjugations, the past tense, direct and indirect pronouns, and reflexive verbs. Occasionally dialogues are repeated with the English translation beneath them, which seems superfluous given that the translations are provided on the enclosed cards. While the video could benefit from more native French speakers, this is a delightful introduction to the language and a fun complement to a high school or college French class.--Jenny Brown』

(Small film yields large pleasures)

『A perfectly put together film about love and growing up. Tully Jr sees love as an endless series of sexual trysts. He learns that there is way more to love than this. Among the many beauties of this tale is the contrast between the free-spirit mom and the boring, trudging dad. Most Hollywood tales, encouraging us to follow our hearts and put ourselves first, never show the broken lives, crushed dreams, and shatttered relationships all too often left behind. But in Tully we see that love is not genetic, not something that happens to us, or something we fall in to, but spiritual, a choice made and honored. The painful difference between those who love others and those who love themeselves is exquisitely done. This is a film that had to be set in the Heartland; no one in Hollywood believes any of this stuff.

Well done in every respect. See it.』

(Life's Twists and Turns Affects Farmers as Much as Anyone Else)

『Probably the single most important reason that a drama fails is because the actors are unable to adequately express the appropriate emotions. Therefore, it is truly a delight to find a movie with such fitting and intensely expressed emotions. Maybe I should add that I watch as many as thirty to thirty-five movies a week when I am working on my book at my cottage, and it is extremely rare for me to find a movie where I have to put everything aside to watch a movie. The feeling in Tully is so intense that I was transfixed, almost hypnotized, by what was happening on screen.

The film had not gone very far when I told my wife that Tully, Sr. was the most believable farmer I'd ever seen on screen. I know that he acted with the Actor's Theater of Louisville, KY for fifteen years, but I still think he must have spent quite a bit of time farming for real! I grew up in the hog capital of the world in Illinois, surrounded by relatives and friends who were farmers, and he would have blended in with any group of old farmers discussing their crops and 'the old days.' His emotions in the scene where he finds out the truth about his long-gone wife is so real one has to wonder if it didn't really happen to him! For that scene alone it is worth watching the movie.

Of course, the movie is about the younger Tully. The expressed relationship between him and his father, his brother, and Ella is also extremely believable. All these younger generation actors are also extremely gifted in expressing the appropriate emotions at the proper times. Indeed, this whole movie should be seen by aspiring actors to observe outstanding expressions of emotions.

If there is anything I would consider negative about the movie, one would be that I didn't find Tully's 'arms-length' sexual affair with the town slut to add anything to the story. A second one would be when Tully began to realize the truth and Ella went to him to offer him a sympathetic and understanding ear, instead of having a serious talk they end up with their clothes off in the back of his car. It would have been more appropriate for Ella to let Tully know she was interested in him sexually, but that then was not the appropriate time. Also, there is a modest amount of coarse language that wasn't really necessary. These are minor drawbacks, however, in an otherwise outstanding movie.

To conclude, it you are interested in fast-paced action films, pass this one by. But, it you can appreciate the slower life of the Midwest farming country, this is a realistic portrayal of that life. No matter how idyllic such a life looks from the outside, this movie shows that life's twists and turns affect farmers just as much as anyone else. And, it does it with such an accurate depiction of the emotions involved that you'll probably wish you could be there to offer your advice and support.』

(Quiet, powerful family drama)

Deceptively uneventful on the surface, the film seethes with repressed emotion underneath, and the end is heartbreaking. A cast of unknowns make these honest, hard-working characters into people that you could expect to meet on the street.』

『The slow pacing is a good match for the rural, quiet lifestyle. Characters are complex, interesting, likeable and believable. Especially enjoyed Julianne Nicholson's portrayal of Ella Smalley, a kind, honest young woman bringing some life to the lonely family dynamic of a single father raising two sons. The theme is bittersweet with a touch of hopefullness. Recommended.』
