(FANTASTIC COLLECTION!!)
『I totally agree with the first reviewer. Not only is this an awesome collection of Classic Country Queens; but, the sound and quality of this CD is excellent. If you are a fan of classic country music, especially the ladies, this CD is a MUST for your collection.』

(Most Awesome Collection of Country Queens Ever Packaged!)
『This Time-Life collection of the 20 greatest female country singers of the 1950's through the 1970's has been such a blockbuster success in the television commercial hawking it has been parodied on Saturday Night Live with Jennifer Aniston! This is truly a historic collection of legendary performances that every country music fan should own, spanning from Kitty Wells in the early 50's to Barbara Mandrell in the late 70's. These are the ORIGINAL recordings too! Almost every song on this CD was an essential ground-breaker for country music, a true landmark record! These are songs ("The End of the World", "Ode to Billie Joe", "Rose Garden", "Help Me Make it Through the Night" etc. etc.) that even those with just a passing knowledge of country music are well familiar with and many of these ladies - notably Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton - are true American pop culture legends. Every song and every performance is truly a classic unforgettably performed by as extraordinary a collection of female vocalists as any music genre ever had in a single generation. Certainly today's country "divas" cannot compete with these QUEENS. Every artist here is represented with her signature hit with the curious exceptions of Kitty Wells (her classic "Making Believe" is featured instead of the historic "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels"), Donna Fargo ("Funny Face" may have been a bigger pop crossover but "Happiest Girl in the Whole USA" is surely Donna's most famous song), and Brenda Lee (represented by "Break it to Me Gently" instead of say, "I'm Sorry"). Lee's presence on this collection is the only sour note for me; yes she was a legendary pop artist who recorded in Nashville but this does not make her a country artist. Her song here "Break it to Me Gently" was not even released on the country music market!!! Nor were any of her other 60's pop hits issued to or played on country radio. The fact that she had a modest career later in the 1970's in the country music market does not make her vintage pop oldies now country records!! Her place should have been filled by Jeannie Seely ("Don't Touch Me"), Jan Howard ("Evil on Your Mind"), Susan Raye ("LA International Airport"), or Billie Jo Spears ("Blanket on the Ground"). Nevertheless, this still remains an awesome collection of every important country queen from Jean Shepard to Crystal Gayle to Connie Smith to Emmylou Harris to Dottie West - every one of these women (with the arguable exception of Ms. Lee on whom I may be being a tad too critical) rightfully deserves to be known as one of the true queens of country music.』

(A Must-Have Symphonic-Metal Album)
『My music libray has been steadily growing for several years, and now consists of what I like to think is a very impressive collection of gothic, symphonic, doom, folk metal, etc., etc. Everything in the 'goth' genre (using the term loosely, of course).
I picked up 'Queen of Light' by Imperia a few months ago, and I'm certainly happy that I did. It really is quite a stunning album, featuring the extraordinarily versatile vocals of Helena Michaelson (Ex- Trail of Tears). It quickly found a place in my top 50.
Imperia have a very well-defined sound, not as bombastic as Nightwish or Epica, but very well structured. Helena's dilivery switches between a powerful, more conventional-sounding 'rock' voice, to stunning operatic tones. No two of the songs here sound the same, and I do not beleive that there is a weak track present. I would have to say, however, that the stand out songs for me are: 'Raped by the Devil', 'Broken Wings','Braveheart', 'Norway'&'The Calling.'
Even though my review only says 4/5 stars, I'd really give this about 4.5/5 (I save my five-stars only for masterpeices like Draconian's 'Arcane Rain Fell', and Theatre of Tragedy's 'Aegis')
That said, I would certainly recommend Imperia to anyone with a taste for this kind of music. They have a sound that it entirely their own, whilst still adhering to everything that we know and love about symphonic metal.

I'm curious that one reviewer said they sounded too 'commercial'... I don't really think so; I think they've got a very well-balanced sound. While I do prefer real gothic-metal, I don't mind the so-called commercial-sounding bands (I also listen to Evanescence after all); I think there's just too much stigma about all that. Good music is good music. And Imperia are fantastic - pick up this album today, you won't regret it!

(Very Commercial)
『Well Symphonic Metal rose mostly from the underground scene with bands like Nightwish, Therion, Leaves' Eyes. Now I guess that it's getting popular you have bands like this. It's not that I don't appreciate some symphonic metal bands that have gone commercial. I think Within Temptation for instance has some really good and creative songs. This music is good to listen to but has about as much depth and meaning in the music and lyrics as say N sync or something...

For a first album everything it is really refined and big budget (unlike most low budget first albums of symphonic pioneers). The band members also are well polished. Seems like somebody with money put this band together. The "symphony" (mostly piano) if you can call it that is really well integrated and strongly in the music (really a big step for a commercial ban), but it is all very rythmic and cliche'. No complex melodies or actual classical influences. The symphony is more "film music" like similar to Nightwish but even less developed than Nightwish (which is hard to do). The whole thing sounds so very radio. The lyrics are mostly cheesy as well. This would appeal to someone who is really into mainstream radio bands (we all know these people), but for people really into symphonic metal, well they might enjoy it a bit, but this definately won't be their favorite album. There's not a lot of real musical creativity or feeling behind it. Though it seems like a lot of people today are just happy with a female fronted band. I'm more into actual classical influences, symphony, actual good opera skills etc. And the general intellectual depth that usually accompanies bands like Therion, Leaves' Eyes, old Tristania, Within Temptation etc.

Nonetheless it isn't a bad addition to your collection if you like symphonic metal. As for the vocals, even here it is very commercial sounding and no real choirs like you might have in most symphonic metal. Really this music sounds very close to evanesence just with a little more of a "symphonic" flavor. I like it better than evanesence though.

Nonetheless it's hard to judge a band by their first album or if they will even stick around. They might grow a lot musically or they might just stagnate and turn out the same old stuff like some bands. I see potential in this band, for the music certainly does come together well and is very listenable. Maybe if they actually hired a composer with some classical background and some real musical credibility to help compose some pieces. Or got someone to write the music who had some real vision. Instead sounds like they are trying to turn out top 20 hits.』

(Good but could have been better)
『A year ago I discovered Imperia on one of the social networking sites I belong to. I am a big fan of gothic metal music fronted by women. I certainly liked what I heard from the samples I had heard. Not too long ago I finally got around to buying their latest album QUEEN OF LIGHT. For the most part, QUEEN OF LIGHT is a solid gothic metal album. Solid drumming, heavy basslines, aggressive guitar riffs, and big operatic vocals from Helena Michaelsen. Unfortunately what bogs down the album is: a) silly lyrics, and b) the oversinging by Helena. Now I am not expecting Shakespeare type lyrics but I certainly don't want to hear such atrocious dreck like "R*ped by the Devil". I would expect that garbage from bands like Cradle of Filth and Children of Bodom. The lyrics for "Missing You" is pretentious as heck. Then there is Helena's vocals. She tends to overdo it for me. Personally she pales in comparison to ex-Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen. Her vocals really irks me on "The Calling" which I equate it to nails on a chalkboard. My personal favorite song on the entire album is "Facing Reality". The pop hooks in that song is super catchy. I also like "Mirror", and "Broken Wings". Although I have given this album four stars, I feel like it is more worthy of 3.5 stars. The material was 50/50 with me. QUEEN OF LIGHT has its moments but unfortunately it has its fair share of flaws.』

(Something very special...)
『Symphonic operatic power metal would be my classification for Imperia's music. Helena has a very powerful, operatic and incredibly beautiful voice and a vocal range to rival Tarja's. Well, it's really difficult for me to write music reviews, but more to the point, this is an excellent album, sounds like something we've all been waiting for a quite a while. If Roy Khan was female, this is what Kamelot would sound like.

Best songs: Mirror, Fly Like The Wind, Raped By The Devil, Braveheart, Abyssum, Queen of Light, Fata Morgana.』

(Another masterpiece from Helena Iren Michaelsen and Imperia!)
『This album is simply amazing! Helena's (ex. Trail of Tears and Sahara Dust) voice really shines through here. You can hear her sing a classic metal (and rather sexy) song "Raped By The Devil", a power ballad like "Broken Wings" and then you can hear her using her operatic vocals on songs like "Abyssum", "Queen Of Light" and "Mirror". On the song "Norway", Helena sings in Norwegian. There is even a song with Helena's little daughter, Angel. You can hear her crying on "The Birth Of..." (the intro to "Queen Of Light").
My favourites are "Raped By The Devil", Queen Of Light", "Braveheart" (about William Wallace as you might have guessed) and "Abyssum". Abyssum is so beautiful - an epic song about being lost and finding you path in life. It really touches me when I'm listening to it.

I can definitely recommend this album! I've been listening to it over and over again and it just gets better and better each time. BUY IT!! I promise you you'll love it ;o)』

『Imperia is an atmospheric metal band who's sound is especially evident by the distinguished and remarkable strong voice of Helena Iren Michaelsen (ex- Trail Of Tears), who sings in a variety of styles from deep emotional feelings to extreme operatic expressions. The music is full of vivacity, it is heavy, bombastic and orchestral, but it also contains elements of pure metal. The band is a true cross-border unit of musicians originating from different countries: Norway, Finland, Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands. Through hard work and extensive touring the band has earned its reputation as a powerful live band.』

(Dawn's light, clear, flexible voiceis a perfect fit for Baroque music)
『Her voice blends beautifully with the light, brittle timbre of the harpsichord. Upshaw shows grace and control without sounding as if she's being held back. This is a perfect genre for her unique voice.

One of the things I love about Upshaw's voice is that it is not typical of most classical singers, and she is able to easily cross over into mor epopular styles. But this recording establishes her finess in the purely classical style as well.』

(Beautiful, fervent Bach, but the Purcell songs are a bit prettified)
『Amazon's reviewer seems to have zoned out on how Dawn Upshaw pronounces words, missing most of the musical value here. Her singing of the Bach cantata, 'Mein Herze schwimmt in Blut,' is very moving. She is deeply involved, and her voice extracts the deep reverence and religious passion that makes this music so great. I'm not as convinced by the Purcell songs, however. Upshaw has chosen some of the most famous, and set against great singers like Battle, Baker, and Ferrier, her rendiitons seem a little shallow and prettified. She's considerably more tuned in to Bach, which is good enough to make this a memorable CD, if not her very best. Things would be much improved if the conducting by the (totally uncredited) conductor weren't so limp.』

(Now that the Sun hath veil'd his light.....)
『Some say angels are God's messangers. When angels communicate, surely they sound like Dawn Upshaw. Upshaw's beautiful soprano voice rises to the stars and floats back again as she sings the beautiful collection of arias and cantatas by Purcell and Bach contained in ANGELS HIDE THEIR FACES.

Shaw's interpretation of Purcell's 'How sweet it is to love' reminds me of the elation I first felt on realizing love exists. 'Lord what is a man' brings one back to earth with a lamentation about human frailty and the finiteness of human existence."Rejoice, rejoice"sings the angel in 'Hark! How all things' with lyrics from 'The Fairy Queen' -- a text by E. Settle after Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream.'

Bach's cantatas fill the air as Upshaw sings arias in German (interpretations are provided in the text accompanying the CD). J.S. Bach's songs are clearly and beautifully articulated by Upshaw while in the backgound various wind and string instruments accompany her vocalizations. Many of Upshaw's vocalizations by Bach in German as well as the instrumentation (including viol consort) remind me of the arias from 'The Messiah' -- majestic albeit on a very human scale. For example, Aria #9 by Bach is comparable to"He shall lead his flock.."(although the latter was written for an alto voice).

The music in English by Purcell is a bit lighter. My favorite piece is 'An evening hymn' by Purcell which I would expect to hear near dusk in an English chapel. However, ANGELS HIDE THEIR FACES contains music you can play year round at any time of day.』

(Picky reviewers)
『I've got a degree in musicology ( and am fluent in German as well), and for a while after total immersion in graduate school, found my listening enjoyment frustrated by the same pickiness that hampers your reviewer. Fortunately, that passed, and I'm now able to simply appreciate Dawn Upshaw's performance of the music we hear all too seldom. I hope that others will be able to participate in Upshaw's interpretation of the poetry behind the music, to think about the theological role of angels (not just pretty faces and feathery wings), to love this wonderful recording. We are indeed blessed that technology allows us to experience such music, such an artist.』

(hark ! how well the lady sings)
『This is one of those little gems that becomes more appealing with each hearing. The Purcell pieces are sweet and lovely, but the Bach ! This Cantata is the glory of this CD. It's verses are of the deepest sorrow and repentance, woeful utterances for God's forgiveness, until the final aria,"How joyful is my heart since God is appeased". Dawn Upshaw's interpretation is beautiful. She captures the emotion, the longing, the spirituality and heart of the piece.

The musicians in the simple accompaniment are superb, and the entire package excellent...it was the cover art that first drew my attention to this CD...an unusual and moving painting by Hugo Simberg titled"Wounded Angel"from 1903. It also has the lovely added touch of being slip-cased, making it a perfect gift item for anyone who likes this type of music.』
『Soprano Dawn Upshaw's programs are always interesting, and this one's a beauty: one of Bach's most heartfelt cantatas flanked by songs and arias of Purcell. For the most part, she's in excellent voice, but with the tics that make some demur from enthusiasm: occasional swooping, thinning of the voice in the upper regions, lapses into a "Broadway" type of vocalism, and diction problems. The latter, oddly enough, are as present in Purcell's English as in Bach's German, as in the way Upshaw lands heavily on therwith a broad American accent rather than the lightly rolledrwe're used to in performances of period English music. There's also some broad word-painting in the Bach, whose text, charting the soul's journey from sin to redemption, really needs no extra emoting. That said, Upshaw's fans will love this disc, and even those who prefer a different approach will enjoy it. Accompaniments are excellent: a continuo team in the Purcell, a small chamber group in the Bach. Outstanding sonics, too.--Dan Davis

(a spirited, very Asian telling of a true story)
『Since gay films are in the news (the critical acclaim earned by Brokeback Mountain), it's worth re-visiting another film about gays which touches on the same themes of love and tolerance (or intolerance): Iron Ladies, a 2000 release from Thailand.

Unlike the more serious, if not downright dour Brokeback Mountain, Iron Ladies is a spirited, very Asian telling of a wonderful story: how a group of transvestite gay males came together to form a champion volleyball team in 1996. This isn't just "based on a true story," it is a true story; the actors' even bear an uncanny resemblance to the actual guys and gals (their coach was a gay female) who lived the reality (they're shown in some clips at the end of the film).

Unlike most Western films about gays, this film isn't afraid to have fun, from the ribald gutter language to the over-the-top antics of some of the players. For added frisson, the team captain is a hetero guy who has to come to grips with his own ignorance and intolerance.

The Asian influence is very visible; at several points, a cheesy pop song breaks out for no particular reason, and the action sequences of the guys playing volleyball do not have the realism expected of a Hollywood sports film. Still, all the sports movie cliches are intact, right down to the cliff-hanger final grudge match for the national championship.

(Volleyball, it seems, is the Thai equivalent of basketball in the States, while the ultra-violent Thai kickboxing more or less assumes the role of the NFL--if football included boxing and no-holds-barred kung fu.)

Yet despite the cliches, the film perceptively imparts the swirling interplay of tolerance and intolerance within Thai society for openly gay people. Despite the cliches, we are openly rooting for the team to win, and we hope for each individual's happiness. Especially touching is the husband and wife who openly accept their son as he is, and enthusiastically celebrate his team's success.

As a footnote, it must be said that the one actor who plays a dancer is more beautiful than most women. Having seen similar guys in Thailand myself, I can only say the outward transformation of a Thai male into a female is most remarkable and most convincing.』

(A BREAKTHROUGH)
『I recently purchased this movie on DVD as a gift to myself and what a good move.
I have been buying a lot of gay films and I would say that a majority of the films tend to be either violent, tragic and unresolved issues with the main characters either being beaten, so much anger with parents and mostly dying.
Iron Ladies delivers a different punch and it was very refreshing, the laughters I had the whole time I was viewing it made all the worries and exhaustion of the day all melt away, it showed me the humanity and kinship we human beings are capable off and how we should just tolerate each other and just accept one another for what we are God's children and have LOTS of fun in our lives and loves and no matter who we are, transvestite, transgendered, queen or straight we can all get along and find love too along the way. This is what the movie has taught me.
the characters, especially Jung and Pia, taught me to be true to who I am and even in adversity face it with courage and lots of make-up foundation, that we do not need to conform to be happy and that love and friendship do conquer all.
I was amazed that a movie with this topic could be made by an Asian Director and I guess after watching the film other societies are more open in their acceptance of people's sexual orientation that we Americans have and that we might think Gay Revolution has move forward here I guess it has accelarated in others.
Bravo to the film makers by showing a different view and perspective on Gay Life and this will be viewed and shared to friends and I will personally keep as a precious Gem,thank you Amazon for including such a wide range of Gay Films.

(Has its shortcomings, but a nice story)
『"Iron Ladies" - as others on these pages have well noted - has its shortcomings: the acting is far from top quality (the 'Coach Bee' character, notably, doesn't act so much as read lines); the sports sequences - for those of us now used to 'Seabiscuit,' 'Ali' or even 'Shaolin Soccer' quality material - is laughably amateurish; the script is trite; the film editing herky-jerky, etc., etc. And, no one is going to rush out and buy this soundtrack, for sure.

All well noted. But what "Iron Ladies" *does* have going for it is a good deal of heart and earnestness in telling what is, amazingly enough, a true story. Indeed, what seals the deal here in terms of having to check 'Ladies' out are the closing credits where - suddenly - we're shown newsreel clips of the 'Real Iron Ladies' squad and we suddenly realize:

a) It's all true (the essential elements of the story, at least).

b) There's a fairly jaw-dropping resemblance between these 'real' folks and their movie stand-ins (and it turns out Coach Bee may not have been such a bad actress after all, as a picture of the real Coach Bee elicted an 'Oh, My God!' from me and my wife).

c) No lie: this group could really play top-notch volleyball (evident in the clips).』

(Laughable)
『Horrific acting (oh, the coach is the absolute worst). Horrendously amateurish movie-making. Dreadful action sequences (hello, they're supposed to know how to play the game....). Lame dialogue that gets overly preachy at parts. If it had been done like a Baz Luhrman or John Waters film with that panache of being purposefully bad, it would have worked, but I get the sense it was actually taking itself seriously. *urp!*』

(Absolutely Fabulous)
『This film is hilarious, sweet, and at the same time touches on the discrimination transgendered folks face. LOVE IT!!』

Cattle Queen of Montana is beautifully filmed on location at Montana's Glacier National Park. Tennessee's Partner: An intriguing friendship forged between high-stakes gambler Tennessee (John Payne) and quick draw Cowpoke (Ronald Reagan) is tested when temptress gold-digger Goldie (Coleen Gray) bewitches Cowpoke into marrying him. Meanwhile, Tennessee has been maintaining an uneasy relationship with The Duchess (Rhonda Fleming), Madame of a gambling establishment which serves as smokescreen to the bordello she operates. In the end, Cowpoke proves to be true-blue when Tennessee is framed on a false rap.Bonus Features:Original Theatrical Trailer| Scene SelectionSpecs:DVD10; Dolby Digital Mono; 175 minutes; Color; 1.33:1 - Aspect Ratio; MPAA - NR; Year - 1954, 1955; SRP - $6.99.』

(Don't bother wasting your money)
『I purchased the Miyim storybook yellow bear in July 07. I noticed that the hands and feet were crunchy. First I was told that they were filled with "organic walnut shell fragments". When I questioned that as being dangerous because some children might be allergic to nuts, I was then told it was a misunderstanding and it was actually "grapeseed filling".
Within a month the seams started to come apart and the stuffing was coming out, by then my child loved the shoddly-made thing. So I sewed and now I have to constantly re-sew because the fabric is so poorly made it's coming apart and the bear is now a bunch of stitching. I contacted Miyim by phone because I was concerned about the hazards of the bear falling apart. The man I spoke to admitted that the earlier bears had not been well made and they had upgraded their collection since then. He told me to throw away the bear and he would send me the yellow frog in its place, Of course I didn't throw it away because my child was very attached to the bear. That was back in October, I never heard from them again. Stay away from these poorly made toys!』

(It came with two big holes!! :@)
『I've got two sets of this sheets, they are nice to touch, and not too warm... but how bad is this? one of the sets came with two big holes... awful』

(Sleepease)
『I was originally searching for green organic cotton sheets and came across these. I would have preferred a green that was a little "warmer" in color, but with all the other great reviews and the fact that I own a bamboo/cotton shirt that I really love, I decided that these would be fine. I received them earlier this week, washed them, and enjoyed their softness. As I went to put it on my king sized mattress however I was surprised to find the fitted sheet a bit large. I consider that perhaps my double pillow top platform bed mattress may actually be "different" some how...but a king mattress is a king mattress unless it's a California King, right? I'm just used to them fitting a little better. Other than that, I'm really happy with them.

(Bamboo sheets)
『Tan Bamboo Sheet Set - Queen We bought the king size blue bamboo sheets. They are wonderful - soft and warm. However, if you like to make a "crisp" looking bed, these will not do. They are too soft to make up a bed for "show."』

(UPDATED REVIEW Soft&Cozy)
『I love these sheets. Hard to believe it is only 250 thread count and not 100% Egyptian cotton...not to mention the price is affordable. These sheets are soft and comfy. Definitely made to fit a tall mattress. Quality seems good although I have only used for a week. I'm getting rid of my old sheets and trading up.

UPDATE Oct 6, 2008 I've now had these sheets almost 7 months and I still love them...still as soft and comfy as the first time I washed them. While I got rid of my old sheets, I have yet to buy another new set. I just keep washing and using the same set over and over.』

(THE BEST!!)
『These are without a doubt the best sheets I've ever purchased. Soft, well made with full elastic the entire way around the sheet on the fitted bottom sheet.Soft relaxing colors..I now have purchased three sets in different colors.Recommend Highly.』
