Would have liked to have the other version of Still haven't found what I'm looking for, nice Choir version, but I prefer their own version. This has 3/5, because to my musical taste 5/5 would be the "Live at Sloan Castle" U2 concert』

Okay there, feel better, you'll not be disappointed, this is a filming before, they started all that fast cutting and flashy shaky camera angels, this is the BEST U2 DVD ever!』
(Brilliant! The cinematography amplified U2's sheer rock music power) 『Quite simply, this DVD was incredible in capturing U2's passionate concert performances and intense songs. The DVD showcases U2's "musical journey" - taking epic scenes from various concert tours they performed throughout the US. The film provided an intimate setting and, for the most part, filmed in black and white, amplified the essence of rock (-n-roll) music.
I went to one of their concerts several years ago. I paid $60 to sit at a nose-bleeder seat so high up in the arena that Bono was as big a my thumb! So, to finally have this DVD, I now can actually see them perform "live" to my favorite songs...priceless!』
(Rattle&Rock!) 『This was a great documentary. It has some great band interviews, live performances, behind the scenes footage and a few celebrity guests like B.B. King. Even though the Joshua Tree songs were mixed in with the live blues album, Rattle&Hum, that was recorded while the band was on tour, it's a great video. Bono owns the stage when he's performing. The camera work was excellent as it really gives you a front-row seat to an intimate U2 performance. I highly recommend this DVD.

Filmmaker Phil Joanou (Heaven's Prisoners), a veteran music-video director and maker of the distractingly kineticThree O'Clock High, finds a suitable outlet for his high energy in this juggernaut of a journey, which finds U2 collaborating with a black gospel choir and B.B. King, recording inside the legendary Sun Records studio, dropping by Graceland, and in a moment of fearlessness, performing the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" to exorcise Charles Manson's sick claim on the song.--Tom Keogh』

(Truly Remarkable Film) 『This film will have you getting out of your chair and dancing along. It is truly a remarkable film with the great dancers like Michael Flatley and Gillian Norris and all the other dancers who were truly remarkabe. You have to purchase this film, you and your family will watch this film over and over. I have had the film for about 9 years and I still watch it like I just purchased the film. It is worth the money.』
(Michael Flatley rocks!) 『You can't beat his talent...when the whole Riverdance fever took the world over a decade ago I tired of his stardom. However watching him in Lord if the Dance reminded me of his superb talent. It truly is an amazing show to watch and well worth every penny』
(A Tell ALL-- not a detail left out) 『My opinion of Michael Flatley is now less than zero. The vast majority of this book is just very descriptive accounts of Michael's extreme promiscuity and sexual addiction. It made me sick. He adds some emotion to it for effect, but I don't buy it. Most of the book is spent bragging about himself. I can't tell you how disappointed I was and I really wish I had quit reading the book when I realized it was all about his escapades with women-- many of whom were in his shows. Yes, he'd wake up some mornings with several of them in his bed!
There is a little worth reading though. I got his side of what happened to Riverdance. But mostly, I felt sick to my stomach at his pervertedness and felt extreme sorrow for how he treated his first beautiful wife.
This may be an updated version to what I've read, but he is married to a different girl than the one he was with and was engaged to in the book I read, and he now has a son. Poor kid.
I wouldn't trust this man with MY daughter! 』
(Moving and Wonderful) 『I am a recent Michael Flatley fan [within the last five years] and I was so pleased to read about his life. I had pictured him as a flawless, untouchable/unreachable star person, born to be great, and not at all like a real person. This is a real human being who has lived a real life, and who has an amazing story to tell. This reminded me of My Left Foot. I love real human-interest stories that tell of both struggles and triumphs. I don't think this is a book just for dancers or fans of dance. I think many people would enjoy reading about a life like this. Highly recommended!!』 『Takes irish dancing to spectacular new heights. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. The light-show presentation is closer kin to another contemporary Irish musical group, U2. Flatley himself has gone designer chic. With close-cropped haircut, earring, buffed abs, and tight black pants he bears more than a passing resemblance to Bono. But you have to hand it to the guy--he works hard for the money, as does his attractive corps. The one maddening aspect of this glitzy, entertaining 90-minute festival is the overzealous editing. No image remains on screen for more than a few seconds. Neither Flatley nor his talented troupe deserves to have such craftsmanship sliced and diced like an MTV music video.--Richard Natale』
IPhone 3G used's review (Now my CHRISTmas is complet) 『I looked forward to the Andy Williams CHRISTmas shows every year growing up,watching Andy and his Brothers and parents, especially his kids. This DVD brings back the great old days. The singing is fantastic, especially Andy singing my favorite CHRISTmas song,"Oh Holy Night."I also loved watching him with his brothers, they sounded so fantastic together, and the Osmonds are also featured on this Disc. If you want to bring back thoes great times growing up,and showing your kids what CHRISTmas was all about, this DVD is perfect.』
(Great Christmas/Variety Show in the '60s-'70s tradition) 『Remember when the Holiday Season on TV ment the variety specials with Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and Andy Williams? I miss them. All you see now are those sappy holiday romance stories or the animated kiddy features. This DVD is great and includes musical numbers with Andy and the Williams brothers. And the Osmonds are a scream. Donny can't be more than 5 years old in the earliest scenes. If you own White Christmas and watch it every year, this holiday DVD is for you.』
(A little disjointed . . .) 『I didn't like this DVD as well as the other Andy Williams special I purchased this year. This one is a colelction of excerpts from various shows instead of being a cohesive show in and of itself. That made it a little disjointed and harder for my kids to watch than if an entire show had been chosen. Still the adults did enjoy the stroll down memory lane!』
(The Best) 『What a shame that this DVD is out-of-print. It's an absolute gem containing the finest Andy Williams Show moments.
Outstanding sets, songs, music and guests. Lots of rare footage of the Osmond Brothers appearances, Bob Hope, Andy's kids and brothers.
You don't find a lot of Christmas DVDs that you want to watch more than once. This is an exception. Can't say enough good things about it.』
(Quality Entertainment) 『The Andy Williams Shows clearly showcase great talent and worthwhile entertainment. The Christmas shows in particular are a family tradition in my home. These shows need to be remastered and shown more often. They just don't make em like this anymore』 『The Andy Williams Christmas Show ran for eight years during the era of holiday variety specials. Now, one collection features Andy's favorite moments from his televised Christmas celebrations. It's a showcase packed with dazzling production numbers, a special appearance by the Osmond Brothers and by Andy's own harmonizing clan, the Williams Brothers. All this plus some tender onstage moments shared between Andy, his family and friends as they perform these and many other timeless holiday favorites: The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Happy Holidays, You Meet the Nicest People at Christmas, What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?, Ave Maria, Mary's Little Boy Child, Silver Bells, I'll Be Home for Christmas, Jingle Bells, The Christmas Song, Holy Night and more!』
IPhone 3G used's review (Where Is It?) 『Where is it? I echo previous reviewers asking why this classic has not been released on DVD. A burnt-out reviewer like Terrence Rafferty (The New Yorker) pans it, but real people who do not live on Manhattan's Upper West Side see virtue in the film. I'm among them and so, happily, is Roger Ebert. Among the many things I like about the film is its portrayal of the wise, patient Catholic priest, who has seen it all yet seems to have retained his faith in a very trying setting and has put his hope where it belongs--in the impenetrable workings of the Holy Spirit.
I also respect and admire the passionate relationship (there's no other word for it) between Moon and Wolfie. Both Berenger and Waits are terrific, but I'd argue Waits steals the show.
The movie aparently cost a bundle and lost money, so the director is ostracized by the moguls. Thank goodness for producers like Saul Zaentz.』
(Savagery accelerates, four stars overall) 『Savagery accelerates. It took European immigrants several centuries to "pacify" - convert, slaughter and segregate - the native populations of North America, but Brazilians have accomplished the same feat in less than 50 years. It is estimated that by the end of the century not a single native in the state of Amazonia will be living under traditional conditions. The issue is almost academic: Thanks to European-introduced diseases, forced relocations and outright genocide, relatively few natives will be around to live under any conditions.
That's the subject of At Play in the Fields of the Lord, adapted from Peter Matthiessen's prescient 1965 novel, and it's an extraordinary one, but Brazilian director Hector Babenco's three-hour, $36-million morality play trivializes it with caricatured performances and crowd-pleasing comedy. Babenco, best known for Pixote and The Kiss of the Spider Woman, has said that Matthiessen's novel was "critical and intense" when dealing with two white missionary couples, the Hubens and the Quarriers, but that the Indians, a fictitious composite tribe called the Niaruna, were "cartoonish." Hence, Babenco has evened the score: in his film, the natives are presented with intensity and the missionaries are cartoons.
Although put into production before Dances With Wolves and Black Robe were released, At Play combines their storylines. The Dances With Wolves scenario is played out by the half-Cheyenne mercenary Lewis Moon (Tom Berenger); hired to bomb the Niaruna, he instead parachutes into their compound and becomes one of their near-naked, idyllically happy number. (If Kevin Costner and Berenger are any indication, firm buttocks are mandatory for those who would go native.)
Meanwhile, the missionary couples enact a Protestant version of Black Robe. Leslie Huben (John Lithgow) is a ridiculously rigid martinet who dismisses the Catholic Church as "the opposition" and even tries to wrest a statue of the Virgin Mary from the arms of a native convert. His wife Andy (Darryl Hannah) has no personality - she appears to be present to give voyeurs in the audience something nice to look at. But toward the end of the epic, she goes skinny-dipping and then - still starkers as the day she was born - sticks her tongue into the mouth of the now thoroughly native Lewis Moon, who has conveniently popped up to ogle her long-limbed nudity. (In the concupiescent camp sweepstakes, the scene rivals The Blue Lagoon.) The embrace has dire consequences. It gives Moon a minor case of the flu, which he in turn passes along to the Niaruna, who have no immunity to the disease. Talk about kiss of the Spider Woman.
The other couple, Martin (Aidan Quinn) and Hazel Quarrier (Kathy Bates) , have other problems. She is a puritanical hysteric - "Everything here is dirty," she screeches of a town on the border of the wilderness, as if a would-be missionary would expect anything else - who is anxious that her child, Billy (Niilo Kivirinta), retain his Midwestern mores. Her husband, however, is a somewhat sensitive true believer (like the priest in Black Robe) who is anxious to help the natives without harming them. This is the single complex character in the film, so it's no surprise that Quinn gives the single multidimensional performance.
Babenco's attitudes toward Hazel Quarrier, as a character, and toward Kathy Bates, as an actress, are inexcusable - Bates' weight and Hazel's hysteria are callously used for comic relief, even after Hazel undergoes a nervous breakdown brought on by grief. Compared to what Babenco does with her, director Rob Reiner treated Bates as a sacred object in Misery.
At Play in the Fields of the Lord is not without rewards. The aerial Amazon vistas, shrouded in mist, are startlingly beautiful; the daily life of the Niaruna is depicted with a glossy, picturesque clarity that brings to mind National Geographic; and the sequences in which the boy Billy goes native are sweetly humourous. But the tribe remains an enigma - we understand far more about the 17th-century native cultures in Black Robe than we do about these contemporary people. With the exception of the inappropriately Christological conclusion (I am being deliberately vague), we are never encouraged to understand the missionaries, only to laugh at, detest and feel superior to them. Surely it's not that simple. Endeavouring to bring salvation, they brought only suffering; there should be a tragic human drama there. Endeavouring to bring insight, At Play in the Fields of the Lord brings only obfuscation; there should have been a great movie there. Benjamin Miller, Filmbay Editor.』
(I have been waiting along time for the DVD) 『I absolutely love this movie and requested it on DVD along time ago. Why isn't it on DVD yet. There are many movies that aren't even close to being this good on DVD, so whats the deal? If your out there reading this Universal, please put this on DVD.』
(Good Movie) 『Good to see this hadr-to-find movie again. Slight tracking problem on the VHS in one spot, but didn't detract. Received in good time. Thanks.』
(An above average drama with some reality) 『Taken from an even lengthier book, "At Play in the Fields of the Lord" is a tale of missionaries that travel to the Amazon, set up shop to convert the heathens to Christianity and make their lives better, and basically end up doing just the opposite. The morality play about the Christian mission achieving the opposite of its intent is a cliche, of course, one that has been played out in film for 50 years.
The rest of the story -- the interactions between missionaries Aidan Quinn, John Lithgow, white man converted to native Tom Berenger, and real world Amazonians -- is more cunning and memorable. A very slow beginning will derail a lot of viewers that don't know what they're getting into. Fortunately, the pace quickens in the final 90 minutes as the machinations of mission work mix like water with the natives' oil attraction to "white" men. The inevitable conflict arises and, with it, an explosive ending that shows even the best intents on the highest plane of existence can come undone in a foreign environment.
Filmed on location in the Amazon, this movies gives an uncompromising look at a culture with whom few viewers are going to have familiarity. The Amazon natives speak in a language few will understand, "dress" in ways that make some of the cliches from white-men-in-Africa 1930s movies look realistic, and show a mean streak about the white invaders that may or may not reflect reality. There is, as others around here have stated, a lot of nudity in this flick including a full frontal nude scene with Daryl Hannah.
The mixture reminds me of a lot of movies about life in the jungle going bad. The overriding tone reminded me of Harrison Ford's venture of life in the jungle, "THe Mosquito Coast", which started out with the best of intentions and ended in similar disarray. The ending reminded me a lot of the final scenes from the 1979 Vietnam epic "Apocalypse Now" where the wayward colonel's jungle lifestyle was reduced to ashes.
I don't discount the votes of the others that gave this film five stars but I don't see much great in this film. Aidan Quinn gave a pretty good performance and Tom Bereger is probably better in this movie than anything I've seen him in. Kathy Bates was pretty much wasted as a whiny wife and Hannah, aside from her voluptuous nude scene, is the same as she's ever been. None of the native actors did much to distinguish themselves, in my opinion. Still, this is a unique film experience and adventurous viewers will gain something from that.』 『Missionaries travel to the Brazilian rain forest and make a mess of everything. What else is new? Actually, plenty in this dark but beautifully realized adaptation of Peter Matthiessen's well-regarded novel, directed by Hector Babenco. Aidan Quinn, Daryl Hannah, Kathy Bates, and John Lithgow play the Americans who travel to the Brazilian interior in an effort to do some good. But their definitions of good vary wildly; Bates and Lithgow are old-fashioned puritans who want to convert the heathens to Christianity and remove all traces of their own culture. Quinn and Hannah are more spiritually minded, hoping to make a connection and a cultural exchange with the Indians they encounter. In the end, they're all delusional, trapped in their own preconceptions. Downbeat but magical in its way, with sterling performances all around and amazing scenery, to say the least.--Marshall Fine』
IPhone 3G used's review (Truth) 『A true characterization of a truly pathetic individual. Historically, Stalin&Hitler were no more than two lost souls, losers in every way, that found a home in subjective, reactive rhetorical organizations.
Stalin used his power to turn his delusions into reality, and untold horrors for the Russian people. This movie accurately portrays the beast and his place in history.』
(History or Hollywood? STALIN delivers an excellent balance) 『I agree with Leaming. Any time Hollywood depicts history, there are going to be issues of inaccuracy, artistic license, etc. In the case of the film STALIN, this is mostly due to the need to compress about thirty years into less than three hours. The portrayals of the primary characters are sometimes simplistic and inaccurate, but Bukharin and Kirov's characters (for example) are portrayed so as to accentuate the perception of Stalin as a monster (which is accurate). In other words, the truth is adapted somewhat to generate a dramatic foil. Films are never a substitute for reading the real history, but I find that they often whet an appetite when one did not previously exist. The mini-series PETER THE GREAT with Maximilian Schell in the title role is another great example of a film that generated popular interest in Tsarist Russia. SHOGUN, ROUGH RIDERS, LAST SAMURAI, GLADIATOR, GODS AND GENERALS, SHARPE'S RIFLES -- all are examples of films that prompted people to actually read history. So, take the films for what they are -- all in all, everyone who loves history should encourage this terrific trend in film-making!』
(nevermind the "purist" reviews - this is an excellent film) 『This film is historically excellent. What most reviewers seem hung up on are accents, make-up and costumes. Most comment that it is historically inaccurate but give nothing very specific. The film is a broad overview of the life of Stalin and could never include every element of his life. All the important stuff is there: the Revolution, the power struggle between Trotsky and Stalin, Stalin's rise to power, The great famines, The Great Purges, WWII, etc. The film gives great insight into Stalin and the paranoia that he experienced and how that paranoia influenced the way he ruled over the Soviet Union. Sure, many of the other characters were somewhat glossed over, but the film is essentially about Stalin and what made him tick - not about the intricate backgrounds of other revolutionaries and supporters. If you don't come away from the film thinking what a bastard Stalin was, then you simply missed the point. The way that he treated his family, friends and so called counterrevolutionaries is illustrated correctly in this film.
The end of the film brings up a very important question that I think many previous reviewers had difficulty with. Fact: under Stalin the Soviet Union industrialized to levels never seen before. With industrialization, this could enable the USSR to compete in the world on par with the US. It would also lead to the development of a nuclear and hydrogen bomb, on par with the US. The film brings up the critical question of whether or not Stalin was necessary for the USSR. That is a powerful and thought provoking question that one carries away from this film. Any film that lingers and makes you think has merit.
The history channel put out a video on the parallels of Hitler and Stalin. As I was watching it I kept thinking, "Gee, everything in this documentary is in the film Stalin."
Is it a perfect film? No. Is it historically innaccurate to merit throwing it away? Absolutely not... Robert Duvall does an excellent and convincing job of portraying a monster.』
(Good Characterization of Stalin, Bad History) 『In the past, apologists for Stalin (including many of his victims) said that Stalin was good, but he was surrounded by bad people. This film turns this on its head saying that Stalin was bad, but he was surrounded by good people. Both of these are wrong--the leaders of the Bolshevik Revolution and the leaders of the USSR in the period following the revolution were all up to their necks in blood. Robert Duvall gives an excellent portrayal of Stalin, emphasizing that he, unlike his ranting partner in mass murder Hitler, was soft-spoken and basically uncharismatic. Duvall correctly does not use a "Russian" accented English because Stalin spoke Russian with a heavy Georgian accent. Having said this, the historical aspects of the film are very poor. First of all, Maximilian Schell's portrayal of Lenin is way off base. The Old Bolsheviks like Trotsky, Kamenev, Zinoviev, Bukharin, Ordzhonikidze and Kirov are shown to be basically well-meaning people who got trapped in Stalin's web. This is untrue, they were all involved in mass terror, justifying it in the name of a "higher good". In Solzhenitsyn's "Gulag Archipelago", he points out what a pathetic man Bukharin really was and how he so freely shed tears for the injustice committed to his person, and yet he had no pity on the millions of others who suffered. At the end of the film, Khruschev says that Stalin's crimes ("the millions" he liquidated) had to be accounted for, whereas,in reality, he himself took an active role in the Great Terror. The film shows very little of what the effect of "Stalinism" was on the average Soviet citizen, with the exception of a scene where Stalin's wife confronts the effects of the mass famine in the Ukraine. The film does not really show the "cult of the personality". It would have been effective if the film had shown how, when Stalin would enter a hall full of people, the crowd would applaud for a very long time because everyone was afraid to be the first to stop clapping. Similarly, towards the end of the film, we see a physician nervously examining Stalin without any mention of the infamous "Doctors Plot" frame-up in which Jewish doctors were falsely accused of trying to murder top Soviet officials which would explain the physicians hesitancy in examing his famous patient.
In spite of the many faults of this film, I have still given it three stars rating because it is important for people to become aware of what this monster did to so many millions of innocent people and who was supported by millions of otherwise good people, both inside and outside the USSR.』
(Problems abound) 『To all the reviewers who think Duvall captured the"real"Joseph Stalin, please run to a bookshelf and consult a non-fictional history of the man. The real Stalin does not appear in this sometimes facile, oftentimes inaccurate biography of the Russian dictator. Originally airing as an HBO TV movie, there are an abundance of errors in the script, as well as a host of other problems.
First, the make-up is amateurish and truly detracts from the viewing experience. Duvall's mustache is a clear paste-on job and in several scenes, the left side of the whiskers almost falls off his face. It's comical at times but ultimately becomes ludicrous in the extreme. His wig is also absurd and fake looking. While this might seem a minor criticism, the make up on the other chief characters is equally ridiculous and cheap. The costumes are also inaccurate in many instances. The color of Stalin's uniform at Yalta in 1944 was not yellow, the color of his uniform at Postsdam in 1945 was not blue!
The historical inaccuracies in the movie are continuous. The characteizations are facile, transparent and weak. Of course Stalin was evil incarnate and a paranoid schizophrenic, but the script doesn't bother to delve into the question of why this was so. There is little material about either of his two wives, or his children. All of that is glossed over. Another silly aspect are the abysmal accents that all of the actors
The only reason I give this a generous rating of 3 is because Duvall is a brilliant actor. Though horribly miscast (and made up to resemble more of a circus clown that Stalin), his acting abilities do shine through. But as far as accurate history goes, this movie is a complete joke.』

IPhone 3G used's review (Nice romantic comedy) 『The first time I saw this one, I thought Witherspoon's character was a little too unlikable for the lead in a romantic comedy, however, after watching the movie more than once I don't feel as much that way. This is a nice movie that still has a few surprises even though you kind of get the feeling you know where things are going. The one thing this movie is lacking that usually shows up in most romantic comedies is a seriously dumb moment in which the characters look goofy and completely unbelievable. That's a plus. The movie has fun with sterotypes about the south and big cities like New York without going too far over the line. It's definitely worth buying a copy of this movie for occasions when you want to watch a nice light movie.』
(ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES!) 『I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! This movie is funny, and filled with the kind of characters that love one another, but won't admit it, that makes for a great movie. Josh Lucas and Reese Witherspoon do an incredible job at battling it out, until they realize what they want most, is to give it another go.
The whole concept of finding your true love in a childhood friend is incredible touching. Josh's undying love for Reese, is one every girls longs for. A knight who does what it takes to win his princess. 』

It's a variant of Julia Roberts'sSomething to Talk About, with all the same strengths and weaknesses, and Reese Witherspoon is definitely its saving grace. As an Alabama country girl turned hot New York fashion designer, Witherspoon finds the genuine emotions hidden under a blandly familiar plot, making her character's romantic indecisiveness seem not only credible but disarmingly appealing. She's just agreed to marry the Camelot-bred son (Patrick Dempsey) of New York's no-nonsense mayor (Candice Bergen), but first she has to officially divorce the husband (Josh Lucas) she left behind years earlier... only to discover that their love is stronger than ever. The rest, of course, is a foregone conclusion, but with a sharp supporting cast and a few charming moments,Sweet Home Alabamawill satisfy anyone who prefers safe, reassuring entertainment.--Jeff Shannon』 『This delightfully entertaining romantic comedy stars Reese Witherspoon (LEGALLY BLONDE) as sophisticated Melanie Carmichael, a rising New York clothing designer who suddenly finds herself engaged to the city's most eligible bachelor. But this is no fairy tale romance for Melanie. She has skeletons in her fashion-filled closet that include Jake -- the backwoods husband she married in high school who refuses to divorce her. Determined to end their marriage and sever all ties with her past once and for all, Melanie returns to Alabama. But home starts to tug at her heartstrings, and what she thought she wanted may not be what she wants at all.』
