(A Great Experience) 『Since Beyonce went solo, I have been very disappointed in her. Not that I have a problem with her going solo. She just have not lived up to the hype surrounding her...until now! This DVD concert is the first project that lives up to her "legend-in-waiting" status.
This concert was great. Beyonce sings and dance her heart out in every number. Don't expect too many surprises though, because this DVD is basically an upgrade from her "Beyonce - Live at Wembley". She took the concepts of her first solo DVD and Destiny's Child farewell Atlanta DVD and upgraded the performances a level or two. That's not a bad thing, but I expected to see a little more from her.
I have only two real complaints: There is no bonus footage (behind the scenes footage, interview, or bonus track). In this day and time, you expect more from an artist and I think Beyonce short-changed us on the extra stuff. Its no wonder Christina Aguilera's DVD is doing better than Beyonce's (despite costing more).
The other complaint I have is the video is stretched. Why? To make her appear thinner? It didn't work because even though Beyonce is beautiful, you can tell she was heavier than her last tour. I just find it tacky that they tried to cover that up by stretching the video.
Either way, I enjoyed the concert and I think you will too.』

(beautiful and exciting...seriously) 『basic, basic plot: Boy meets balloon. Boy and balloon hang out around Paris, despite others' efforts to separate them.
I had put off seeing this because it sounded hilariously boring. (In fact, I believe that the old tv show "The Critic" had this movie as part of some kind of joke, insisting that it was the eponymous critic's favorite movie to exemplify his pomposity.) I wound up watching it the other day late at night because it was short and I wouldn't stay up...and was definitely wide awake afterwards. I won't go into too much detail about what happens in the film because it's so short, but I will say that I found it very enjoyable and I will watch it again sometime to get a better look at the effects used in giving the balloon personality, as well as the final scene. I'd say that the last scene, which is both a surprise and visually stunning, has been aped by the Bravia advertisements and innumerable directors. It's really unforgettable and even a bit shocking - quite refreshing for someone who has grown inured to CGI and other cinematic trickery.
DVD print: I thought it was clear and the colors came across well, but the person watching it with me said the faces were a bit muddy and some of the scenery too dark. Not sure about the scenery claim, however, as I thought the streets of Paris were meant to look darker in contrast to the gloriously red and oddly oversized red balloon. In any event, it's lovely and you won't be angry because it's a Janus/Criterion film.』

In November 2008, Criterion's bare bones DVD of Albert Lamorisse's award winning 'The Red Balloon' (1956) will be getting a new release, but this time 'The Red Balloon' will be paired with Albert Lamorisse's award winning 'White Mane' (1953).
This coupled DVD would be a wonderful present for any little child (young or old).
Again, from the total run time of just 74 minutes, nothing extra will be added outside of (one would hope) the brief printed liner notes for both found in the single DVD version, plus one theatrical trailer celebrating the 50 year restoration for both shorts.
The third short not in this new release, but available separately, is William Mason's 'Paddle to the Sea' (1966). This 28 minute children's short won Best Documentary Film at the International Children's Film Festival in 1968. You also might want to look into that one.

(A timeless classic, worth owning and viewing at least once a year) 『I have always enjoyed this film, and make it a point to watch it at least once a year, usually around the holidays. It's not a family film, so it is definitely not something you'll want to watch with small children present. The theatrical version contains some language which might be objectionable to viewers of any age.
The story itself is very basic -- there's nothing complex to remember. It's simply a story of a man trying to get home in time for Thanksgiving dinner, only to have every transportation option work against him. The twist is that he teams up with a complete stranger in their quest to get to where they need to be. It's in this vain that the unfortunate but often hilarious events take place. The comedy in this film runs from a chuckle to side-splitting laughter. Things are often taken to the extremes, but in an odd way, it all seems logical.
The story is heart-touching in the end. Again, there's nothing complicated about the ending or how the film gets there. In all honesty -- "you're along for the ride". It's simple, endearing, and the message is something to which anybody can relate.
No matter how many times I see it, I still feel good inside during the last scene as the credits roll.』
