(Great for young toddlers!) 『My 19 month old is obsessed with this DVD! He loves the songs and the characters, and sees new things each time he watches it. Yes, it's cheesy and essentially a 30 minute commercial for Disneyland, but it's not nearly as annoying as a lot of the kids' DVDs out there. Also, the French version is quite entertaining - if you understand French, it's interesting to see how some of the songs are translated.』
(Great fun - plus an easter egg!) 『The other reviewers have good points, but I don't think anyone has mentioned what I think is the most fun feature on this DVD! But more on that in a moment.
First, the people giving negative reviews have two good points - this thing IS a little dated, and the song "Grim Grinning Ghosts" can be scary for young kids. (I can't remember any other major criticisms...) Having said that, I really like the return to 1989: Big hair! Guys wearing pink (non-ironically)! The PeopleMover! Party Gras! It's a little like watching one of those World of Disney shows from the Sixties. My kids didn't like the song "GGG" at first, but I watch it with them, and we discuss the relevant issues - that it's just pretend, that there are people in those costumes, and that sometimes it's fun to be scared. I think they'll be ready for the Mansion next time we go to Anaheim...
But there's so much more to love on this video! The songs are fun, and it's great to learn some of these lyrics to sing along at the park. I can no longer walk down Main Street without humming the catchy second song on the disc, and the up-tempo "Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah" is cool, complete with the requisite horrible rap break in the middle (so common in the Eighties). And since it was 1989, they were also trying to cram Roger Rabbit down our throats at every opportunity (sorry, Roger - great attraction, but you're not a "classic")!
The most fun, though, is sort of an easter egg, and I haven't heard anyone else mention it. On the "set up" menu for the DVD, it gives you the option to switch the language to French. Haven't tried it? I don't blame you, I don't speak French either. But when you choose that option, instead of just a translation, you get an entirely different video - shot at Disneyland Paris! It's a beautiful park, and the video shows some things I've heard of, but never seen, like Alice's Curious Labyrinth and the dragon lying in wait beneath the castle. Plus, the Phantom Manor song features the mysterious Phantom himself, and a real treat for Haunted Mansion geeks: a beating-heart Bride face character!
To sum up: * Yes, the video is dated and a bit dorky, but there are those of us that embrace that sort of thing. * The Haunted Mansion is creepy, so don't leave your kids there alone. * Roger Rabbit was never as successful a franchise as Disney had hoped. * Disneyland looks pretty much the same today as it did twenty years ago (except Tomorrowland, which does not look as modern now as it did then). * And even if you don't speak French, Disneyland Paris is a great place to spend part of your day.』

It was shot in the early 90's right about the time I was graduating from high school so the scenery and fashions really bring back some memories. The kids love it too and seem to really enjoy the "Main Street USA" and "Step-N-Time" sequences. PROS: -Definitely loved the movie itself. It's cutesy and the villains are entertaining and funny -Megan's siblings are in full effect! Plus Baby Lickety-Split is a character, haha -It's a great way to play the movie, even better than the best VHS versions -The plot is amazing; the Smooze is after the little ponies and they're working hard to save their home -The Moochick is a hoot, as always, and a big help -Fizzy is the most energetic and exciting pony to watch of them all! -I absolutely LOVE Wind Whistler and North Star, who each deliver magnificent performances -I love Spike's appearance, and the Grundles -Wonderful music, especially "I'll Go It Alone," "Nothing Can Stop the Smooze," "What Good Will Wishing Do?" and "Home." Not to mention the opening and closing themes
CONS: -Baby Lickety-Split is a brat, unable to see how selfish she is -Gusty does have a little bit of an attitude (even BEFORE she gets Smoozed) and Shady is too cynical for me. I also didn't like Sweet Stuff after she was Smoozed -Rosedust was too quick to brush off the little ponies at first -Miscellaneous ponies do show up at weird times. When Megan, Molly, Danny and the others go for the Flutter Ponies, they show Buttons but she isn't supposed to be with them
Overall, you won't be disappointed at all with this purchase -- I definitely recommend it!』

It has so many elements 1) an unusual setting, Christmas in Australia, 2) a touching story on several levels about family, loss, kindness, honesty, love, hardship and the belief of a little boy in Santa, 3) a real sense of humor, 4) the love of a family struggling to make it 5) the pain of loss from of a wife and mother passed on and the healing that's needed for the father and son left behind.
This movie has a charm that is not found elsewhere. Just the idea of a Santa in Australia during their summer season and that man being on the run, with redemption possible for him as he works to fulfill the dreams of an innocent and precocious child.
Most folks we know have never heard of this movie. We can't recommend it enough. We cherish our tradition of watching it each season. It reminds us in many different and beautiful ways about the spirit of Christmas even in summer in December in Australia. chrisbct@hotmail.com』

Australia is very hot at Christmas, because their summer is then, so the holiday gets celebrated very differently. During the story, a drought is on and everything is dying. The family is very poor and can't afford to buy gifts but their little boy is sure that "Father Christmas" whom he thinks he's met in person, will get him a gift if he's good. When a scoundrel pretending to be Father Christmas, and the local rich man get involved, it becomes a Christmas none of them ever forget. The movie has one scene that would make it worth watching anyway, even if it weren't a good movie: the scene where they try to have a traditional English Christmas (complete with Yule log in 100 + weather) and the roasted pig takes a header across the room. You'll love it!』

My twin brother is getting married in May, and as his wedding present, I purchased him a DVD/VCR player and all of our favorite movies from when we were children. Diana's husband is off to war too and Anne is on the field looking for Gil when she finds Diana's husband wounded,he has to lose his arm.Anne gets them both to safety and works a job while Diana's husband adjusts,then Anne finds him safe passage home. During Anne's continued search to find Gil,who has been taken as a prisioner to doctor the enemies wounded,Anne runs into this famous author she had worked for in New York. He has taken on a French wife and they have a little boy together. He is trying to get them back to the states safe. He has to seperate from the woman and his child to later meet them. While Anne is trying to get the woman and child to safety the woman is fatally wounded, leaving Anne with the child. Anne stuggles to keep she and the child safe and alive until she is contacted by the father. She finds Gil and the father/author close together. While the four of them are on a train headed for home the father is shot and killed leaving the little boy for Anne and Gil to raise as their own. Of course there is much more, this is just some of the high points. It was a wonderful movie. And my movies came in great shape and the delivery was very fast! Very satisfied customer!』
