Speaking as an adult male over 6 feet tall, I wish the towel was about 5 inches wider and 5 inches longer. Often I would lie on the towel and slip off the sides and get sand all over my arms. Or, I would lie on my stomach and the front of my legs would all get sandy. I'm sure kids may not care about this so much, but for me it was annoying.

(A celebration of life, music, and the unfathomable beauty of Iceland.) 『As Sigur Ros bassist Georg speaks in the tour diary included in the second disk of the Heima DVD, up until the release of this film, Sigur Ros fans had not really been given a visual document of the bands work and spirit aside from the album artwork, which is beautiful, but does not really give fans the kind of living experience that they have always wanted. Heima is a film about Iceland, and the islands most popular band, Sigur Ros, on a short unannounced tour throughout the country. Heima means "at home," which means that the band is in their most comfortable environment, their own home country with all of it's beautiful, homely charms.
The majority of the film is presented in the form of concert footage and footage of Iceland's beautiful natural landscapes. It is divided into passages concentrated on different towns, villages, and cities, and personal concert experiences from each. The idea that this could turn into a dull, Discovery Channel documentary is immediately disproved, as the band remind us that they are among the most innovative and consistently interesting performers in a long time. In fact, Sigur Ros turn what we know about documentaries upside down. Within the first fifteen minutes, we are shown live footage of the band performing one of the better songs off of Takk while completely silhouetted by an earthen cloth that takes up the entire expanse of a stage. The entire song is performed under shadow, reminding us that the music of Sigur Ros is as much about what is not there as what is there. This may seem pretentious, but we must remember that this is a band that released an album with blank pages in the sleeve meant for fans to produce lyrics of their own, a counterpoint for the fact that Sigur Ros vocalist Jonsi almost exclusively sings in a babel that does not belong to any language.
Almost every song is performed in a unique way or in a unique place, and although some of the performances do not add anything new to their studio recordings, they all resonate with warmth. This may be partially due to the inclusion of the band's supporting strings section, the all girls band Amiina, that has served Sigur Ros very well within the past ten years and act as family both professionally and personally.
Another switch-up is employed very early on in the naturalistic segments. Footage of running water from streams and waterfalls is reversed. I could tell you that this represents Sigur Ros moving backwards in it's own footsteps in the snow, back home, to where things started, but then I would sound like I'm looking for reasons to praise the bands every move. This kind of over-analysis from fans is what has given the band their pretentious reputation. What we need to remember is, water running backwards in gorgeous high quality just looks impressive. And the ideas of Sigur Ros are not always as complex as we may think. The band keeps their music close to the human condition, and closer to the human ear.
What Sigur Ros have done are bring us into their world, into their home, and showed us what their music is about. Heima is as much a testament to Iceland as it is to Sigur Ros and their live repertoire. Throughout the span of the film, the band play songs in desolate regions such as in the middle of a forest as well in a slew of other places that I will not mention so to leave the majority of the movie a surprise. These performances are either pretentious or completely genuine, and we struggle with this question until after the performance of the final song, when Jonsi describes an interesting family tidbit which I also cannot reproduce here, in risk of it losing it's effect. We are also shown footage of the people of the different Icelandic villages living their everyday lives, as well as indulging in the concerts, which they seem only half as impressed about as we do. A local marching band accompanying Sigur Ros onstage seems to them to be completely natural, as unique as it is. Moments like these are not few, and I struggle to not reveal more of them because of how interesting they all are. But shots of the natural beauty of Iceland are just as important and moving as the happenings the people that inhabit it. This seems to be part musical documentary, and part natural documentary, both areas approached in lighthearted and honest ways.
Intricacies aside, Heima is a solid live concert experience. The songs are performed very well, although they do not differ much aurally from the original album cuts. The DVD is put together very nicely, but at times the interactive menus can get a bit confusing and tiring, despite their creativity of their presentation of an elderly map of Iceland, which are probably much more navigable to Icelandic people. The extras are quite interesting and are enough to keep fans' appetites quelled until the band's next release, whenever that may be. There are a couple different versions of Heima that you can buy, namely the standard two disk DVD as well as a deluxe edition with an art book, but both releases have the same two disks and are only cosmetically different. My complaints of the film are only in my desire to have seen some of my personal favorite songs performed, specifically Gong, Saeglopur, and Svefn-g-englar, but you can't please all of the people all of the time, and none of the song selections here are wasted efforts. I was especially impressed with the performance of Meo Blodnasir, a magical little interlude on Takk that would not normally be seen as anything more than filler. Even for casual Sigur Ros fans, Heima is essential, and it is surely the apex of Sigur Ros' career thus far. Easily the best music documentary I have seen, and a highlight of 2007 in both music and film.』
(Not even a fan of Sigur Rós) 『I must admit that I am NOT a fan of Sigur Rós! I lived in Iceland when the concert in Reykjavik went off and I was bored. Some may say I was negligant - but that was just the way it was at that time. Then I was recommended this DVD. I was very sceptical at first and it took me a long time to get my hands on it. Reluctantly I put it on - and was blown away. This "movie" is simply amazing. It is photographed in an amazingly beautiful way and SR's soundtrack is absolutely perfect. The landscapes of Iceland filmed in a special blue hue is just captivatving and it stresses the mood of the film, the country, the stories and... everything Iceland! I am so please having bought this DVD and it is a great supplement to "Screaming Masterpiece" - which btw was the movie that made me interested in SR beyond the hype. "Heima" and "Screaming Masterpiece" are highly recommended!』

(Timeless) 『My daughter and I saw Yentl together in 1983 in the theater when she was in the 7th grade. We walked out of the theater, looked at each other, turned on our heals, went back in and watched it again.
The music is glorious and the story is timeless. This is an intelligent movie. There is a unique quality to the way the film was made by which it seems there is more story telling through the music than the dialogue. It's a lovely way to absorb the story, with your gut rather than your cerebellum.
I watched it again about a month ago, and the strains of the "klesmer" music had me in tears. Minors, 7ths, flats -- flat minor 7ths! Heart wrenching, transcendent, other worldly.』

IPhone 3G used's review (A perfect version of the classic -- and very human.) 『Nana: My grandmother, Anne Gillis
The star: George C. Scott was an icon; legendary American stage and film actor, director, and producer, perhaps best known for his Academy Award-winning portrayal of General George S. Patton Jr. in the film Patton. He was, quite simply, one of the finest actors of his (or any other) generation. An actor who often played gruff and harsh roles, Scott was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor for his portrayal in A Christmas Carol.
Scott's interpretation of Scrooge is spot-on. His Scrooge is a complex human being and as the story unfolds the viewer sees WHY he became so bitter and cynical in his old age, and for (perhaps) the first time an actor playing Scrooge successfully portrays the REGRETS the character has. His Scrooge feels REAL. He takes familiar dialogue and makes it seem spontaneous and fresh. He face, his movements, his words, all convey the emotion the man feels - and he does feel. His ultimate transformation seems believable: This is a man who has closed his heart to love to feeling, and finally realizes what he's lost. Scott is brilliant as Scrooge.
Ebenezer Scrooge: [Sitting under the bridge after the Ghost of Christmas Present leaves] "What have I done... to be abandoned like this? What?"
The Cast: The entire cast is wonderful. No role is miscast. In addition, many of the actors are British, so the mannerisms and accents and use of language seem natural. The acting is believable, making characters in an all-too familiar story seem REAL and full of life.
David Warner's Bob plays just the right balance of timid clerk and loving husband/father. Susanna York (who will always be "Lara" to me), is pitch-perfect as Mrs. Cratchit. There's a nice scene where Bob Cratchit and his wife kiss under the mistletoe and hug lovingly. This version shows that that are not just parents but a couple who love each other very much.
The Cratchit children are not overly sugary but just seem like nice kids. I like when Mrs. Cratchit tells one of the children to go butter the brad and she adds, "Thinly." Tiny Tim is sickly looking, but not overplayed as the over-the-top doomed child.
Roger Rees as Fred is very good, and the casting directors actually made an effort to cast Scrooge's sister Fan and Fred resembling each other. Rees's Fred is just a little too reserved for me, but that may be a directorial choice to contrast him with his Uncle Ebenezer.
Frank Finlay (Marley's Ghost), performance is incredible; you really believe he is filled with regret for his lot. Finlay plays the role as just a bit crazy, just a bit over the top emotional; which is perfect for Jacob Marley.
The Ghost of Christmas past is wonderful; Angela Pleasence conveys just the right balance of teacher/reminder and clear contempt for Ebenezer. What's interesting in this version is that the ghosts have obvious disdain for Scrooge - and aren't afraid to show it. When Christmas Past is departing as Scrooge insanely screams, "Leave me," she smiles wickedly. But she also prods him, sometimes gently:
[Christmas past and Scrooge are watching his past self dance with his great love, Belle:] Christmas Past: "How long since you danced, Ebenezer?" Scrooge: "Waste of time." Christmas Past: "You didn't think so then." Scrooge: "The was a REASON then."
GREAT writing. GREAT characterization. Honest regret over choices made and not made.
Edward Woodward as the Ghost of Christmas Present is exceptional. He is full of life and humor, sarcastic when he needs to be, and he also doesn't hide his disapproval of Scrooge. He is bombastic at times, commanding, powerful, and a man (ghost) on a mission. He is enjoying his torment of Scrooge. I get the feeling he really doesn't care whether Scrooge repents or not.
[Scrooge, observing the Cratchit's meal:] Scrooge: "It's a very small goose." Christmas Present: "It's all Bob Cratchit can afford."
And when the ghost reminds Scrooge of his "decrease the surplus population" comment he is positively venomous as he snarls, ""It may be that in the sight of Heaven you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man's child!" It's familiar dialogue but man, this ghost is seething when he says it.
Throughout the film, many of the actors communicate with facial expressions rather than words. A good actor can pull this off brilliantly. There are many such examples in this film: Scrooge's look of confusion when he sees Marley. Young Ebenezer's look of sadness and regret when he knows he'll never please his father. And so much more.
The film itself:
Thee entire movie is VERY faithful to the original story. It was filmed on location in Shrewsbury, England, giving it an authenticity not found in other adaptations. The costumes are perfect. The attention to detail is meticulous. Nothing looks like a "set," All the places - the homes, the markets, the offices, look real. The scenes of commerce at the exchange, the frenzied shopping at the market on Christmas morning, the bustling city - it looks and sounds very real.
The foggy, dreary London described in the Dickens story is very well created here. The streets where Scrooge walks to his home are dark and creepy.
The majority of the special effects are conveyed by traditional stage effects with smoke, and lighting. It's all very effective.
The scene at the when the horses and Marley's funeral carriage pass by - we see it but Scrooge doesn't - creepy.
Marley's makeup, lighting and clothing -- all a deathly blue - is well done.
The transitions from one scene to the next during the time-travel are unique to each ghost - the cap Christmas Past holds reflects each scene as we transition from one time to the next. Christmas Present's torch bridges one sequence to the next scene, and Christmas future transitions each scene with a loud crash and brilliant flash of lightning.
And in each of Scrooge's visions of the future, after he witnesses the scene the lights dim and only a spotlight effect remains on him - almost like standing alone on a stage. It's a very effective presentation. The Ghost of Christmas yet to come first appears as spotlight shines on him in the distance, and it is conveyed mostly through shadows of hands and hoods. It's all very well done.
Liberties with the story (all good):
As Scrooge takes his cold gruel by the unlit fireplace, he sniffles, a reminder that (in the story) Scrooge had a head cold.
I love it when Scrooge adds his own "Amen" to the Cratchit's Christmas prayer.
We see several scenes of Scrooge conducting his commodity trading business at the exchange. Scrooge is clearly recognized as a man of business and is deferred to as such, but a hard businessman with no compassion or room for negotiation.
The Ghost of Christmas present doesn't age and fade away in this version - he laughs at Scrooge and abandons him outside in unknown territory.
We finally meet Scrooge's father in this version - he's a cold man, a mean spirited old bastard. He does not love his son -We learn that Scrooge's mother died giving birth to him and Silus Scrooge holds a grudge against his son because of it. This makes the characters seem much more real. Also, I think this is one of the few versions where Fan is older than Ebenezer.
There are dozens upon dozens of memorable scenes in this film, but my favorite is the end -- in this version, it's clear that Scrooge is a man whose newfound joy is tempered by remorse. Not only is his intention to make things right in the present and future, but to apologize for his past behaviors. His apology to his nephew is here an integral part of the story--it is heartfelt. And it works.

He goes on to meet Fred's wife Janet and says, "I, uh, I was in love once. Can you believe that?"
Janet: "Yes."
Scrooge: "But I had neither the courage nor the conviction that you two share."
He then reminds Fred how much he resembles his sister Fan and adds, "I loved your mother, Fred. For a time I'd forgotten how much."
And finally Scrooge says, "My God forgive me for the time I've wasted."
Summary: An outstanding adaptation of the story with a perfect cast, believable, flesh and blood characters and meticulously detailed sets and streets. A perfect Scrooge and a larger-than-life stage, an adapt ion that takes a very familiar story and makes it feel fresh, and real. I HIGHLY recommend this Christmas classic. 』

But my son likes me to watch it with him and we sing and dance to each song. I'm glad it's not a 2 hour movie! He sees the words across the screen and is learning new words that way. Xmas is over but we watch it everyday.』
