『Great shoe- but not standard sizing. I usually wear a 41 which is typically a US 10-- but on the Earth shoe box the sizing states that a US 10 equals 42. So I guess they run true to size as stated on the Earth shoebox, but the conversion is not standard and hence runs small.』

(Advanced students)
『I've been doing yoga on and off for years (mostly during the winter). Every year I seem to be getting more advanced and was having trouble finding more advanced videos that I like. I can't get into Yodney Yee as many DVD's as I have. His style is a bit to rigid and seems just physical. I love Bryan Kest and have recommended that one to many of my friends who just love his DVD (the Power Yoga one). Both guys and girls love Bryan Kest, even beginners and friends who teach yoga as well. Beryl Bender Birch's DVD is awesome as well. The style is very similar to Bryan Kest, but she does sun salutations really fast (for warming up the body) and her asanas are really, really advanced. No music, which I love because I can put on my own music. Her voice and words are matter of fact, no trying to sooth you, which is fine when you are concentrating on your form.

After going through so many DVD instructors, I really find her to be the best for advanced students. Highly recommended.』

(Great DVD)
『This is a wonderful DVD... Beryl has been around forever.. Gotta love her Ashtanga background. Also check out TAMARA'S YOGA FUSION』

(Beryl is amazing!)
『I've owned this book for a while, since I started practicing yoga 7 years ago, but I recently took a three day workshop with Beryl and was inspired to reread it. I couldn't have appreciated the layers of wisdom in this book back when I was a beginner ashtangi. I no longer primarily practice asthanga, preferring heated power yoga instead, but this is the best general introduction to that form and the basics of yoga philosophy. I feel that Baron Baptiste's _Journey into Power_ is the best place for beginners because his sequence is more accessible, for nonyogis and westerners in general (let's face it, vrkasana is far more safe and accessible than ardha baddha padmottanasana) .

Beryl writes much better than Baron, however, and introduces much of the important history and philosophy, so I think this book would be an ideal second book to read. Beryl is the best, I think, at explaining the mental side of yoga, the breath, and so forth. The first chapter is filled with extremely valuable insight after insight on how the mind/body reacts, resists, focuses, and surrenders. What she has to say here is eloquent, beautiful, profound, and true.

I find her instructions for the poses to be full of valuable information, but the book is somewhat awkward to use while practicing. While Baron's book has nice color photos, different colored headings, to make it easy to follow, the layout editors or designers did not do nearly so well with this book.

For actually doing the practice Beryl describes (the primary series), I *highly* recommend that you also buy a copy of David Swenson's _Asthanga Yoga: The Practice Manual_. It has great, clear, high quality photos, is spiral bound so that it lays flat next to your mat, has one pose per facing pages or so, and the essential instructions. But, on its own, it won't do, because it has no introduction to speak of and the instructions are too minimal--one must refer back to Beryl. The two books need each other. Plus, Swenson covers the entire intermediate series, which Beryl just introduces.

After this, one should move on to Beyond Power Yoga, to go further down the rabbit hole of the topics raised in the introduction to this book. But the photos in it are awful--they are all jagged and pixellated like jpeg thumbnails displayed full screen, so bad that you can't see the details of the poses, like hand position, etc. If the design on the first book was mediocre, the design of the second is appalling. I can't believe they sell it that way. The person in charge should be fired and they should send replacement copies to all owners, along with an apology fruit basket. Seriously. Beryl's text in the second book is, however, great. I also recommend her meditation CD.』

(A very good Ashtanga Yoga DVD)
『This is an Ashtanga Yoga DVD. For those who are not familiar with Ashtanga (or Astanga) yoga, it includes lots of Sun Salutations. If you don't want to do lots of Sun Salutations do not purchase this DVD or any other Ashtanga DVD. I think this is an excellent DVD. I attend live Ashtanga classes when I can, but love the convenience of yoga DVDs. I own several other Ashtanga DVDs and love them all. I love that she adds a few extra asanas to the routine that are not normally in the primary series (such as crane pose). The class consists of students in a variety of shapes, sizes and abilities. Therefore, modifications are shown. This is a great DVD to add to your collection.』

(Not Just Another "Power" Yoga Practice)
『I have to take issue with Cafreen's review. I strongly suspect that the majority of people who buy this DVD will find the workout to be vigorous rather than moderate. As noted by Jumpuphigh (see the 2 comments posted comments in reply to Cafreen's review) this workout is the Primary Series of the Ashtanga yoga practice. The order of poses in the Primary series never varies. The benefit, or power, in the workout arises out of the way the poses are sequenced (the specific logic of which is beyond the scope of this review). BB Berch did not create the 1.5 hour sequence, known in Sanskrit as "yoga chikitsa" or "yoga therapy". It was developed in India by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, a renowned Sanskrit scholar and yogi. HIS mentor was Krishnamacharya, who, in the early 1900's, also taught Iyengar, and Desikarchar. All 3 students went on to popularize and to become the primary influences in the transmission of yoga to the West. Decades ago, back when BB Berch first coined the term "power yoga", other vinyasa (or flow) style practices that use the term to denote a vigorous, flowing yoga style did not yet exist to create the confusion that the term now often engenders.
Cafreen mentions the series of seated poses that occur mid-practice, but doesn't add that a vinyasa (consisting of a jump-back into Chattaranga Dandasana - the bottom or lowered portion of a push-up - moving up into Downward Dog, from which you jump your legs between and through your hands, (ideally) landing on your bottom) is inserted between every half pose (i.e., a pose done to one side) in order to maintain the heat of the practice throughout the seated sequence. Moreover, in the Ashtanga system, holding the bandhas (or "locks" which in the Primary Series consist of mullah bandha [keeping the muscles that form the floor of the perineum lifted] and udyadha bandha [lifting and engaging of the lower abdominal muscles]) and maintaining a controlled form of breathing called ujayii during the entire sequence are important for "keeping up the heat". Although it is an intense workout, practiced yogis should not find it to be a cardiovascular workout.
The fact that Cafreen found it to be a moderate workout makes me suspect that she may be relatively new to yoga and may not have received any in-depth instruction on correct alignment. As an instructor, I've found that the majority of students who began in vinyasa-style traditions practice poses incorrectly, reinforcing habitual patterns of mis-alignment, which makes poses easier to perform, but ultimately causes us to miss out on one of the most powerful means by which yoga benefits practitioners. By the way, long before I was an instructor, I was one of those students who fell in love with yoga, having been introduced via a vigorous, flowing practice (the Primary Series of Ashtanga, not coincidentally). I then spent almost 2 endurance-building years in which I performed sloppy, ill-executed versions of postures that looked much like they looked the first times I'd tried them. When I first encountered an Iyengar-trained teacher (Iyengar yoga is extremely detail- and alignment-oriented school of practice) who focused on my form (or lack thereof), many of the poses in which I considered myself practiced, became quite a bit more difficult...and they have remained challenging, because there is no such thing as the perfected yoga pose. Ultimately, yoga is not about obtaining a cardiovascular high, but is about uniting movement and breath, balancing effort and surrender, learning to pay attention, to observe, and to stay present in the moment. BB Birch's book of the same name serves as a companion to the DVD workout and is an excellent source for learning more about the fundamentals therein - from what separates yoga from other forms of physical exercise to sequencing and alignment basics underlying the Ashtanga practice.

『Demand for these DVD"s is at an all-time high following international workshops and the best-selling books, Power Yoga and Beyond Power Yoga! Power Yoga is the best-selling yoga book in the United States and has been for the past 8 years - now on its fifth printing. Nearly 300,000 copies sold to date! The DVD&VHS were created to serve as the companions to the book.』

(Finally, permission to feel sexy!)
『My wife and I have been doing yoga for years and our focus has tended to be on the spiritual side. But the truth is we've always found it to be a bit of a turn on. We figured that was just a pleasant side effect to being physically and spiritually invigorated. So when I saw the title Better Sex Through Yoga I ordered it right away to surprise her with it. Was she surprised! I was hoping it wasn't pornographic and it wasn't. It's actually a great workout with a seasoned yoga teacher, who happens to focus on the sexaul side of the things. She really makes you feel good about it. The whole thing is very, well, stimulating.』

(Challenging and Fun!)
『I have tried countless yoga videos and the problem with all of them is that they are not challenging enough and they barely touch on basic yoga poses. "Better Sex Through Yoga 3" is a refreshing change! At 50 minutes, it's a complete total body workout. It's perfect for people (like me) who take yoga classes and are familiar with the poses but need to perfect them. I also feel like it pushes me on those days when I can't make it to the gym. The instructor also reminds you to breathe in and out in the poses throughout the video (which I never remember to do!) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!』
『There is nothing more satisfying than being sexually fit. With advanced yoga positions, designed to target your sexual-core muscles, Better Sex Through Yoga III brings you to your highest level of sexual fitness yet. Volume III, the highest level of this series, is a challenging routine that offers you the ability of regaining the sexual confidence and passion in the bedroom we all desire.

Better Sex Through Yoga deeply targets the hard to reach inner-core pelvic muscles with more difficult, longer-lasting yoga poses. This creates new strength, flexibility, and range of motion three key things that will improve your sex life immensely! As your body awareness grows, so will your control, confidence, and ultimate sexual pleasure.

Radiate new self-assurance and poise others will be sure to notice
Oxygenate the blood, increasing sexual energy and desire
Develop amazing control in the bedroom with new full-body strength and flexability
Enhance sensation and awareness in the erogenous zone
Impress your partner with your new level of sexual confidence and fitness

(strong yoga)
『I love this yoga dvd. I have been doing yoga for years and wanted a step up in strength and ability. Peggy Hall is perfect for what I want on my tough workout day. It is my favorite. Not to floaty, good form, interesting, good strong vinyasas, and I am exhilerated and stronger after each session. I also own Surfer 2, and this is even more challenging, yet doable.』

(More than just yoga for surfers)
『In this video, Peggy definitely steps it up compared to the two previous videos. The video extends beyond the yoga realm into pilates and beyond. I found this more challenging and enjoyable than YFS2. My only complaint is the use of Brian Conley and Garrett McNamara. They are both just tokenly going through the easy motions. Tom Carroll is the real star of this video, and his flexibility and strength is definetely impressive. All in all I would recommend this video.』

(Excellent in Every Way!)
『I love the other two Yoga for Surfers DVDs, so I couldn't wait to get this one -- and it even surpassed the other two! The production of the DVD is mroe like a movie than an exercise video -- every thing is very high quality and cutting-edge. The locations are beautiful and inspiring. I love that Peggy uses professional surfers in her routines (this time Tom Carroll, Bryan Conley and Garrett McNamara -- and you won't believe the waves he rides!).

The DVD has three segments, each about 20 minutes long. The first is all about the abs and back, with poses that are really challenging but also accessible. (Peggy reminds us to breathe and focus and we can accomplish anything!) The second is all about lower body strength, along with balance poses. The third is about upper body strength along with more arm balances. I'm motivated to keep doing this DVD until I get good at it -- there's always more to explore, never boring. And the best thing -- not a bunch of sun salutations, just unique variations on different poses. I felt fantastic after doing it.

I like that I can do the program all at one in about an hour, or I usually just do one segment every other day and finish it in a week. Perfect to do in the morning before going to work, and I feel great the rest of the day.

Yoga for Surfers always gives you a great value for the money, and this one does, too -- lots of bonus material about the pro surfers, a very interesting interview with Peggy Hall about the whole Yoga for Surfers idea, and the best part: a guided surfing meditation. This kept me sane when the surf has been flat! There is gorgeous footage of Tahiti and Australia and of course a lot of inspiring surfing from the pros!

So yes, do buy this one, it's an excellent program in every way.』

『The highly-anticipated DVD is the third in the popular series by the Yoga for Surfers crew and includes challenging yoga poses, creative sequencing, and a mesmerizing original soundtrack. Avid surfer and certified yoga instructor Peggy Hall is joined by the pro surfers in three 20-minute segments, one focusing on the abs and back, one focusing on the lower body, and one focusing on the upper body. The routines can be done separately for a quick, efficient practice or put together for a more complete practice. Bonus features include profiles on each surfer as well as a guided meditation for surfing. Running Time: 80 minutes. Release Date: 11/29/2004.』

(Max Strom is an amazing teacher.)
『I think anyone wanting to learn more about yoga anotomy and alignment should watch this video. I also recommend TAMARA'S YOGA FUSION』

(Krikey, this is sublime)
『I haven't bought a new hatha yoga DVD in a while but from the glowing reviews and a desire for some variety in my home practice I took a chance and I'm so glad I did.

I've used Ali McGraw's wonderful DVD taught by Eric Schiffman since that was relased 10 years ago, as well as Bryan Kest's original Power Yoga Series, both of which I do love, and Seane Corn's DVDs. I still love those, and I own about 20 Kundalini yoga DVDs that I rotate and use religiously, but this is quite special.

First, I love Max. Such amazingly peaceful, loving energy. He's the kind of guy you want to hug immediately. So that sets the tone. Second, the meticulous detail on these 2 discs is admirable and SOOOO valuable. I've been practicing yoga for about 20 years, give or take, and with the brief workshops on various challenging poses (and poses I never thought of as challenging but in fact they are when done properly) I am finding my own practice to be transformed through his teaching. Moving my hips into cat tilt while in cobra was a WHOLE other experience; protected my back, engaged the core and just brought such energy and strength to a pose I've done for years and years thinking I was "just fine". You can always go a little further, make it a little safer and make even the simplest poses can become more active. That's the alchemy I found in this DVD.

There are two separate classes; one of 90 minutes, the other is 45. They both end with a wonderful and lengthy stay of having your legs up on the wall in total relaxation. They are not the most intense classes, compared to say a Power Yoga set, but they are definitely thorough, graceful and as intense as you make them. But they are also gentle, approachable and fluid without feeling repetitive.

I love the option of choosing music&Max, or either of those separately. I hope all yoga DVDs follow suit. I also loved the look of the video; a sunny, crisp, clean studio with 3 students. Two of them do the entire class (both) at Level One, with one student at Level Two. This makes it completely non-intimidating so this would be a fabulous DVD for a beginner.

I find the energy of these classes to be so beautiful, I popped one of them on as background while I was doing domestic chores over the weekend!

There are so many types of yoga and different experiences within this ancient art. With Max and these DVDs, you get gorgeous meditations, well chosen series of asanas and spectacular attention to detail not for aesthetic value, but to deepen your experience of the poses and to stay safe every moment.

I can't recommend this DVD enough. Absolutely beautiful. Very pure yoga, though Max infuses it with some other influences and his own lovely persona. For people who find Seane's approach too gruff or think Bryan Kest is annoying (I like them both), this would be a great alternative. For people who LOVED the Ali McGraw/Eric Schiffman DVD and wish they'd do another, this would be another favorite.

Note: the Level One students do use a block and a strap during the classes.

(Multi-Useful, LOVE Max)
『I used to take Yoga with Max back when Exhale in Venice was Sacred Movement. I was disappointed when he sold to Exhale and moved away. He is an extraordinary teacher with a gift that's hard to explain.

His voice is calming and he gives off the most positive energy. His 90 minute classes were so therapeutic, sometimes I cried...

This DVD is fantastic. You have your choice of 45 or 90 minutes and you can also choose to just select the meditation option. Best exercise video I have. I travel with it.』

(A wonderful workout that makes you feel good!)
『This great DVD by Max Strom has many additions not all yoga videos have: focus on breathing (which makes everything so much easier!), detailed explanations and examples of each asana for proper technique and safety, and options for different experience levels.

Max guides with clarity, humbleness, and humor. The sign of a good teacher. Max gets across the frequencies of peace and understanding, but not in the false spiritual way that sometimes comes along with yoga classes.

The main student is beautiful and also easy to relate to. The music is inspiring.

Before I knew it I was getting a great workout without even thinking about it! And the end meditation is perfect.

Buy this DVD, you will want to pop it in the player all the time for the expansive feeling it gives you.』

(Gifted teacher)
『I was fortunate enough to attend Max Strom's classes regularly for about a year in Los Angeles. His classes were a transporting experience for many people, including me. The poses were challenging but safely attainable, and provided a framework to keep advancing. I felt healthier than I had in years. My eating habits also improved because I started to crave healthy foods. In the classes I was always inspired and moved by Max's presence, voice, and musical selections.

When I moved back to Connecticut, I purchased an audio recording of Max's Level 1-2 class, and his music compilation "White Swan Yoga Masters, Vol. 1". What a great decision. Here is an email that I recently sent to Max:

Hi Max,

I really enjoy getting your newsletters, and am trying to get to
one of your workshops. Although my practice has not been
where I would like it to be lately, tonight I put on your level 1-2
class CD, along with the 'White Swan Masters Vol 1' CD. It
was great, and I feel so much better. Now, I have the 3rd track
'Ganga Pooja' on repeat - the chanting is really powerful.

Thanks again for all of the inspiration.

Best wishes

("Love Always-Spirit of the Ancient Masters")
『For those unfamiliar with Tisziji's music, this compilation makes an excellent introduction to the cataclysmic, catastrophic, transcendental,
ultimately benign Spirit blessed, Heart Fire Sound of this humble master.
I've had the privilege of hearing and playing with some of the great guitarists of the world but Tisziji stands apart from them all by way of his purity, fearlessness, compassionate detachment, lack of ego or karmic gravity and the absolute reality of a life lived in selfless service to the needs of Spirit.
This cd is infinitely rich in truth, heart, soul, creativity and Spirit. It should be essential listening for any and all who appreciate
    those qualities in music.
As Tisziji says, "Gratitude is the Attitude"!

    (Music to pierce the Heart)
『This is Heart to Heart music. There is no question of the high level of musical/artistic mastery present on this disk, with Rashied Ali, Bob Rakhalam Moses, and others at the prow, and Pharoah Sanders and Tisziji and others at the helm. But if it were merely about the art it would be an empty shell, as so much art is. Truly this music is of and for Love, and the Joy of Spiritual Freedom. This is why Tisziji moves so seemlessly between 'straight ahead' or 'free jazz' styles. The form is only there as way to carry the message, but the spiritual 'content' of the music is always at its source the same. So for me, listening to this music is sadhana, spiritual practice, because I experience the enveloping light of a heart broken wide open, because every note is a window to enlightenment, because it speaks from the realm beyond karma. I cannot really even say how moving to me certain tracks are like Song for All Children and Blessing, just that they pierce and burn the superfluous glut of garbage around my Heart. Thank you Tisziji, and Love Always to all beings! Hu.

    (Powerful Spiritual Jazz)
『This lengthy compilation covering nearly 20 years of recording serves as a potent introduction to one of the most compelling and enigmatic figures in jazz, guitarist Tisziji Munoz. The recording features some well known world class musicians, Pharoah Sanders, Dave Liebman , Ravi Coltrane, Rashied Ali, Paul Shaffer, Bob Moses and others working under this powerful and mostly off the radar bandleader and composer. The appearence of musicians so closely associated with John Coltrane is particularly apt and telling. Mr. Munoz is in many respects following in a tradition of spiritually based music that includes John and Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders as its most important proponents. Mr. Munoz is a serious spiritual practitioner and a prolific author on spiritual matters, indeed some see him as a bonafide Guru or Spiritual Master.
So this music has spiritual sources and conveys a very unearthly point of view at times. The recordings starts with and includes some very melodic and passionate playing that is anything but avant-garde. Mr. Munoz then tackles Seven Steps to Heaven and All Blues and establishes his credentials as a straight ahead jazz player of the highest order.
This CD veers between beautiful straight ahead romantic playing such as on Summer of 42 to powerful uncompromising originals. At times such as on Happy Sadness , the playing brings to mind Carlos Santana but quite frankly Mr Munoz is a far more capable, more melodic and more passionate player. The track featuring Pharoah Sanders demonstrates how "out" the two of them can play. Yet this free playing has a strange compelling serentity about it that distinguishes it from much of the field. I think Dave Liebmans perfomance on Happy Sadness may be the best I've ever heard by him.
For those beings seeking more heart, more love, more tragedy, more humor, more transcendence in their music .』

『Wahe Guru Kaur has established herself as a deep and meditative performer / composer in the mystical niche of the New Age Music market. Her best seller AQUARIAN SADHANA is a meditation CD designed to elevate human consciousness during the Aquarian Age. Blending ancient rhythms with contemporary western instruments, the album initiates the listener into a world of uplifting and spirit-filled music. The words on AQUARIAN SADHANA come from yogic scriptures and practices based on Hindu and Sikh spiritual traditions from 15th, 16th,&17th century India. These simple poems, called 'mantras' prodruce a special energy which can heal the human psyche. AQUARIAN SADHANA brings new life to a ancient practice with a pleasing variety of rhythms and melodies. (Excellent)
『a very excellent selection. i listen to it at home, in the car, at the office...just about anywhere.』

(Yoga is just the beginning . . .)
『This CD is truly one of Michael's finest recordings. As with his other music, Michael composed and mixed all of the tracks but this music CD is unique because it is his first At Peace Music recording on which he plays all the musical instruments himself . . . Every time I listen to this CD I pick a new favorite track and I never get tired of any of them. Each track has it's own unique yet mesmerizing vibe; the track sequencing is sophisticated and energizing. If you're looking for music to listen to while you practice yoga, enjoy a massage session or simply relax and enjoy life, you need to add this to your collection.』

    (Manduka Travel Mat)
『I have been a yoga student for 8 years and over time have used several different mats; nike, lululemon etc..
A month ago my yoga teacher suggested I buy a manduka travel-light mat for a firmer support under my feet; ILOVE IT! It is light and easy to carry and most importantly my balance has improved. It is firm but very comfortable! You will not be disappointed.』

(Unfortunatelly this mat is very slippery)
『This mat is very slippery for vinyasa yoga. I bought it to replace my old mat that I have for over 5 years, a regular inexpensive mat that I couldn' t find any more in the market. I have washed the manduka mat more than 20 times and I have tried all possible different detergents. It is still slippery.』

    (BEST MAT EVER!)
『This mat is excellent. At first it was a little slippery, but if you read the instructions and wash it and leave it in the sun, it comes alive. Recommend it to anyone who is tired of leaving little mat pieces on the floor.』

    (land fill blues)
『after a few months it started to disintegrate. Now I have to put it in the land fill.』

    (Great mat)
『I was torn between this lighter version and the heavier version. I am very pleased with my final choice of the lighter Manduka mat. It is wide enough and thick enough in comparison to your average mat without being too heavy to tote to the gym. It was delivered extremely fast so fast that I checked to make sure I didn't order expedited delivery! Yes, it was VERY stinky and a little slick. I tried washing it in the house but it wasn't helping with the smell. My solution was to leave it outside for about 2 weeks on my porch table. Our winters are mild so it wasn't getting too cold or getting too much sun. I would flip it periodically and wipe it down. We had a few rainy nights that was just perfect to get rid of the residue. After 2 weeks, the smell was gone. I tried once to use it sooner and it was an hour of torture - way too stinky to use. I prefer to use the bottom side of the mat - it has a better grip with the little circles on my hands. I haven't had any problems slipping until just recently when I had an instructor who insisted the room temperature be at about 100!!! I was sweating enough to slip for the first time ever. I had a thin hand towel with me that I placed on the mat under my hands. It was the perfect solution and no more slipping!』
『This awesome eco-responsible yoga mat is Manduka's alternative offering to their ultra-heavy 7-pound-BlackMatPRO. The 4-pound PROlite has all of the great qualities of the BlackMatPRO (density, durability, firmness), but it is slightly thinner and narrower than the its heavyweight counterpart. Available in 5 colors: purple, olive, pacific, pinot, and apricot. 3/16" x 24" x 71" (3" longer than a standard yoga mat)』
