『I am a member of a Dahn Yoga center and I wanted the video for days when I couldn't get to classes. I was both pleased and somewhat disappointed with the video. While the exercises on the video were done extremely well, I felt that the time devoted to each segment was way too short. I would recommend stopping the tape and doing the exercises for longer that the brief time they show if you want to get more benefit from the video.

The setting of the video was very pleasant and peaceful. The explanations of the movements were excellent and easy to follow. I really appreciated that when they would say turn to the left (or right) that you were actually following the direction they were moving, and not THEIR left (or right). So many exercise tapes tell you to move to one direction and they are not doing it in a mirror image so you are actually aimed in the opposite direction and I find those videos confusing, so I was very pleased that Dahn Yoga for Beginners made it so easy to follow the directional movements.

I would hope that Dahn Yoga would produce several videos with each video concentrating on different exercises and allowing plenty of time for each exercise, but I felt that overall this was a wonderful video and I would recommend it to anyone wanting a Tai Chi-type exercise. It is more like Tai Chi than traditional yoga, so please keep that in mind as well.

It would also be beneficial for people to take an actual Dahn Yoga class at a Dahn Yoga center to better acquaint themselves to this style of yoga and to see how the video and the class differs. I am not affiliated with Dahn, and I am only suggesting trying a class at least once. Hope my 2 cents was helpful to you.』

『This video was an essential componenet of the lifestyle I followed to avoid complications during my pregnancy, labor&birth. It includes modifications so women at all fitness levels can enjoy the yoga session through all stage of their pregnancy. There is no distracting chatter: pregnant practioners, as well as Collette herself, clearly demonstrate the wide variety of poses&the audio track is Colette's calm&soothing voice. Accompanying her voice is wonderful music that enhances concentration&relaxation during the session.

I purchased this tape because I was pregnant for the first time at age 40&wanted to do everything I could to have a normal pregnancy&labor&to give birth without any medical interventions in a non-hospital setting. On April 13, 2003 I achieved that. I am especially grateful for Collette Crawford's teaching me with this tape how to 1) avoid/turn a breach; 2) the flowing cat pose to optimally position a baby for birth; 3) trust in my body's ability to birth normally; 4) still my mind with the humming meditation that is part of the session&, perhaps most importantly, 5) the Udjai brathing, which helped me be&stay in that sacred space of"no place, no time"that I went into during my 8-hour labor.』

『I liked this video and found the yoga to be very helpful in my first pregnancy. It dramatically decreased back pain and sciatica when I consistently practiced. I found it easy to use and inspiring. I agree that it is too long, I had to devise my own ways to chop it up into smaller bits and the explanations during the video could have been decreased (it made it more choppy). But overall, it is soothing, calming and very beneficial to use.』

『I found this video to be very helpful during my pregnancy while I coped with a changing body and changing center of gravity. The poses are clearly explained and demonstrated twice to assure you are in the correct pose.

Colette takes time to give hints and provides instruction on how to modify the poses if needed. The relaxation steps toward the final section of the tape is a must for first time and beyond mothers -if you have time for nothing else in your day, 20 minutes to relax will benefit you, your baby and those around you greatly!』

It breaks your concentration to be interrupted to watch instruction on a pose that you could have learned otherwise.Also, too many props needed to do this workout and not enough time to set them up between poses.』

『This video has some excellent yoga postures for pregnant women. Colette explains what each is for, however, the separate instructions she gives and demonstrates for each posture take too long and are repeated when the tape switches to the group of pregnant women. Other yoga videos I have just seamlessly blend the verbal instructions into the video.

Because the tape takes too long (a little over 60 minutes), I am not motivated to do it very often. However, after doing the workout several times, I can do the moves I need without watching the video whenever I have the time. For instance, when I wake up in the middle of the night with a backache, or while watching TV, or upon getting home.

For a tape this expensive, one would expect better production values. Instead, we see a plain set with an occasional fly getting in the screen, and no music.』

(Advanced students)
『I've been doing yoga on and off for years (mostly during the winter). Every year I seem to be getting more advanced and was having trouble finding more advanced videos that I like. I can't get into Yodney Yee as many DVD's as I have. His style is a bit to rigid and seems just physical. I love Bryan Kest and have recommended that one to many of my friends who just love his DVD (the Power Yoga one). Both guys and girls love Bryan Kest, even beginners and friends who teach yoga as well. Beryl Bender Birch's DVD is awesome as well. The style is very similar to Bryan Kest, but she does sun salutations really fast (for warming up the body) and her asanas are really, really advanced. No music, which I love because I can put on my own music. Her voice and words are matter of fact, no trying to sooth you, which is fine when you are concentrating on your form.

After going through so many DVD instructors, I really find her to be the best for advanced students. Highly recommended.』

『I've owned this book for a while, since I started practicing yoga 7 years ago, but I recently took a three day workshop with Beryl and was inspired to reread it. I couldn't have appreciated the layers of wisdom in this book back when I was a beginner ashtangi. I no longer primarily practice asthanga, preferring heated power yoga instead, but this is the best general introduction to that form and the basics of yoga philosophy. I feel that Baron Baptiste's _Journey into Power_ is the best place for beginners because his sequence is more accessible, for nonyogis and westerners in general (let's face it, vrkasana is far more safe and accessible than ardha baddha padmottanasana) .

Beryl writes much better than Baron, however, and introduces much of the important history and philosophy, so I think this book would be an ideal second book to read. Beryl is the best, I think, at explaining the mental side of yoga, the breath, and so forth. The first chapter is filled with extremely valuable insight after insight on how the mind/body reacts, resists, focuses, and surrenders. What she has to say here is eloquent, beautiful, profound, and true.

I find her instructions for the poses to be full of valuable information, but the book is somewhat awkward to use while practicing. While Baron's book has nice color photos, different colored headings, to make it easy to follow, the layout editors or designers did not do nearly so well with this book.

For actually doing the practice Beryl describes (the primary series), I *highly* recommend that you also buy a copy of David Swenson's _Asthanga Yoga: The Practice Manual_. It has great, clear, high quality photos, is spiral bound so that it lays flat next to your mat, has one pose per facing pages or so, and the essential instructions. But, on its own, it won't do, because it has no introduction to speak of and the instructions are too minimal--one must refer back to Beryl. The two books need each other. Plus, Swenson covers the entire intermediate series, which Beryl just introduces.

After this, one should move on to Beyond Power Yoga, to go further down the rabbit hole of the topics raised in the introduction to this book. But the photos in it are awful--they are all jagged and pixellated like jpeg thumbnails displayed full screen, so bad that you can't see the details of the poses, like hand position, etc. If the design on the first book was mediocre, the design of the second is appalling. I can't believe they sell it that way. The person in charge should be fired and they should send replacement copies to all owners, along with an apology fruit basket. Seriously. Beryl's text in the second book is, however, great. I also recommend her meditation CD.』


(A very good Ashtanga Yoga DVD)
『This is an Ashtanga Yoga DVD. For those who are not familiar with Ashtanga (or Astanga) yoga, it includes lots of Sun Salutations. If you don't want to do lots of Sun Salutations do not purchase this DVD or any other Ashtanga DVD. I think this is an excellent DVD. I attend live Ashtanga classes when I can, but love the convenience of yoga DVDs. I own several other Ashtanga DVDs and love them all. I love that she adds a few extra asanas to the routine that are not normally in the primary series (such as crane pose). The class consists of students in a variety of shapes, sizes and abilities. Therefore, modifications are shown. This is a great DVD to add to your collection.』

(Not Just Another "Power" Yoga Practice)
『I have to take issue with Cafreen's review. I strongly suspect that the majority of people who buy this DVD will find the workout to be vigorous rather than moderate. As noted by Jumpuphigh (see the 2 comments posted comments in reply to Cafreen's review) this workout is the Primary Series of the Ashtanga yoga practice. The order of poses in the Primary series never varies. The benefit, or power, in the workout arises out of the way the poses are sequenced (the specific logic of which is beyond the scope of this review). BB Berch did not create the 1.5 hour sequence, known in Sanskrit as "yoga chikitsa" or "yoga therapy". It was developed in India by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, a renowned Sanskrit scholar and yogi. HIS mentor was Krishnamacharya, who, in the early 1900's, also taught Iyengar, and Desikarchar. All 3 students went on to popularize and to become the primary influences in the transmission of yoga to the West. Decades ago, back when BB Berch first coined the term "power yoga", other vinyasa (or flow) style practices that use the term to denote a vigorous, flowing yoga style did not yet exist to create the confusion that the term now often engenders.
Cafreen mentions the series of seated poses that occur mid-practice, but doesn't add that a vinyasa (consisting of a jump-back into Chattaranga Dandasana - the bottom or lowered portion of a push-up - moving up into Downward Dog, from which you jump your legs between and through your hands, (ideally) landing on your bottom) is inserted between every half pose (i.e., a pose done to one side) in order to maintain the heat of the practice throughout the seated sequence. Moreover, in the Ashtanga system, holding the bandhas (or "locks" which in the Primary Series consist of mullah bandha [keeping the muscles that form the floor of the perineum lifted] and udyadha bandha [lifting and engaging of the lower abdominal muscles]) and maintaining a controlled form of breathing called ujayii during the entire sequence are important for "keeping up the heat". Although it is an intense workout, practiced yogis should not find it to be a cardiovascular workout.
The fact that Cafreen found it to be a moderate workout makes me suspect that she may be relatively new to yoga and may not have received any in-depth instruction on correct alignment. As an instructor, I've found that the majority of students who began in vinyasa-style traditions practice poses incorrectly, reinforcing habitual patterns of mis-alignment, which makes poses easier to perform, but ultimately causes us to miss out on one of the most powerful means by which yoga benefits practitioners. By the way, long before I was an instructor, I was one of those students who fell in love with yoga, having been introduced via a vigorous, flowing practice (the Primary Series of Ashtanga, not coincidentally). I then spent almost 2 endurance-building years in which I performed sloppy, ill-executed versions of postures that looked much like they looked the first times I'd tried them. When I first encountered an Iyengar-trained teacher (Iyengar yoga is extremely detail- and alignment-oriented school of practice) who focused on my form (or lack thereof), many of the poses in which I considered myself practiced, became quite a bit more difficult...and they have remained challenging, because there is no such thing as the perfected yoga pose. Ultimately, yoga is not about obtaining a cardiovascular high, but is about uniting movement and breath, balancing effort and surrender, learning to pay attention, to observe, and to stay present in the moment. BB Birch's book of the same name serves as a companion to the DVD workout and is an excellent source for learning more about the fundamentals therein - from what separates yoga from other forms of physical exercise to sequencing and alignment basics underlying the Ashtanga practice.

『This is a wonderful DVD. I had been hesistant to use DVDs for my yoga practice, as I have always preferred to do my practice with a group of people. But Baron Baptiste's DVDs have provided me with the perfect alternative since I don't have a lot of yoga options in the town that I currently live. I use this DVD and Unlocking Athletic Power, both of which were filmed live, and provide a great visual for modifying postures. Baron's descriptions of the postures, and soothing voice make for a great practice. After only 3 weeks I feel stronger, and with less joint and muscle pain that I was feeling before. These practices are only a 1/2 hour long, so I'm able to start my day with the practice without having to get up an hour or two early. Its a great way to clear one's head and make for a fresh start for the day. I highly recommend these DVDs.』

『I really like Baron Baptiste! He was one of the first to do Power Yoga and he has made it accesible to everyone.
He moves very fast during the salutations but it is not hard to get into the flow and it does warm up the body.
My regular pracitce is now Kundlaini Yoga, thanks to Ana&Ravi, but this is great to do once or twice a week to get my Power Yoga fix!』

『A few words about myself so you can judge easier if my opinion might be helpfull for you: I'm into Power Yoga since about 6 Years, I practice every day and teach Power Vinyasa Yoga at a local Hotel Spa Fitness Club.
I personally prefer physically demanding Flow Routines challenging strength but still contributing to all the aspects of Yoga.
Beeing german my spelling is far from perfect, sorry for that!
About the DVD:
This is one more of Barons good short programms for the days inbetween when you can't practice 60 to 80 Minutes. It is 30 Minutes long and has a focus on the muscels of the Stomach and Back. It is still a complete Programm featuring Sunsalutations ( only A) and some twists and streches. The programm leaves you warm and energized but is not to hard to do. It will challange the Abs and the back but wont leave you exhausted.
It's a good programm for the morning. I highly recommend all of Barons short Routines since every one is somewhat different, aswell as his longer Programms. Baron is a very skilled, gentil and encouraging teacher giving his students a lot of important information in a calm and soothing manner. The Music of Krishna Das was a great pick for the Background.
A nice flow practice (ones again tis is true for all his programms) with beautifull Yoga Chant music. What else can a Yogi ask for?

(Great advanced beginner/intermediate workout...)
『... that is, if you don't take yourself or the instructors too seriously. Folks who are generally unfit will find the balancing poses demanding and probably won't have the stamina for this workout, but for those with a bit more strength and endurance it is a challenge and quite fun. The women in the video are a somewhat odd combination of typical peppy aerobics instructors ("Eight more!") with some mumbo-jumbo about finding your center and claiming your inner beauty, and they intersperse yoga terms without really explaining them. Their best advice was about the satisfaction of working hard to achieve your fitness goals, and with that in mind, doing this workout regularly will definitely enhance one's core strength and gluteal muscles.』

『Yoga Booty Ballet is sometimes kind of cheesy, but the moves are effective. The women may grate some people's nerves because of their mantras or because their personalites are a little out there. There is one moment where one of the ladies gives the other stink eye and their deep breathing close ups are... interesting. Once you get past all that the moves are doable and worthwhile. I used this DVD as a followup to a more strenous one. The time flies through this one because everything is pretty succinct.』
