(Nice practice for experienced beginners)
『This is one of the longer Yoga Zone practices led by founder Alan Finger. It's labeled as being for beginners, and although Alan does offer a good deal of form pointers, I think the practice would be most appropriate for experienced beginner to intermediate practitioners. The setting is an indoor studio, and Alan leads Yoga Zone instructors Lisa and Michelle; Michelle shows more modified versions of the postures, sometimes using props.

The practice begins on the floor, where Alan leads you through ujayyi breath while in a seated postured and then moves into a potted palm series. Kneeling poses follow, including cat, active cat, and lunge, and you finish with down dog and standing forward bend before moving to a standing position. Once standing, Alan moves through two series of sun breath and then two series of sun worship (aka sun salutations). Next comes a sequence of standing postures: triangle, standing quad stretch, side angle pose, and warrior 2, performed all on one side before switching to the other side. The standing work finishes with wide-angle standing forward bend and squat.

Returning to the floor, Alan first has you practice sitting in staff pose, then balance in scale (boat) posture. Next comes cow-face pose to open up both the hips and the shoulders, and finally, full seated forward bend. At this point, Alan has you roll down to the floor for savasana, and my one complaint is that he doesn't do any twists to release the spine before having you lie full on your back. He does lead you through a nice savasana where he has you tense and release various parts of the body, and he concludes the practice in a seated position for a total time of about 51 minutes.

Overall, this was a nice practice. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as my favorite Yoga Zone, Flexibility and Stress Release, which I find both more challenging than this one and more relaxing, but still, this is another solid Yoga Zone offering, especially for those newer to yoga.』

『I like this tape. I would like it more if it included more backbend poses. I don't like speeding through poses because I also do aerobic dance and step for heart health. I do yoga for flexibility and strength. I do one hour of yoga a day and I alternate hour-long Alan Finger tapes with Yoga Journal (Rodney Yee, Suzanne Deason, and Patricia Walden) tapes.』

(Good for Beginner's who like lengthy instruction)
『This is a great dvd for those new to yoga as Alan Finger directs 2 women while they do the poses while he speaks.
Other reviewers wrote the poses, so I'll just add, if you like lengthy instruction above&beyond the basics&no silence, this is for you. If you like less talking, try Gaiam's or other beginner yoga dvds.
Yoga Zone relies heavily on using mats, straps (you can use a belt instead), blocks&blankets. Don't feel you have to go bankrupt&buy these in order to do the poses correctly. Just do the best you can&through practice you'll get better.. it's doing it that feels wonderful, being aware of your body&getting the circulation going, not concentrating on being perfect, just don't do anything that is painful.

『I just recently bought this video and can't believe the difference it's made! I'm more flexible than I've ever been, and my legs are firm and strong again.
While this is a good beginner's video in terms of learning the postures effectively, I don't recommend buying this as a 'first-time' video, as some of the postures may be a bit tricky or confusing. However, if you're in the process of learning, this tape is for you.
This routine doesn't do much for abs or upper body toning, but your legs will get worked. And, it definitely delivers on the flexiblity. A great program!』

『The DVD had two sessions - backbends and forward bends. Some of the poses in the forward bends session are very difficult. The really unfortunate aspect of this DVD is that there's no menu selection that allows you to immediately start a session. You either have to sit through the opening dialog for each session or keep hitting the next button. The DVD should have at least three sessions, minimize the opening dialog, and provide better verbal instruction through each pose.』

When I started this workout I thought "Yeah right!" However after a few months of dedicated practice I mastered about 80% of the poses. I'm still being challenged by it. I usually do these yoga practices AFTER and intense cardio session when my muscles are warm and there's no food in my tummy. Have plenty of water handy and PACE YOURSELF! Don't do anything you are not ready to do.

(My first Yoga DVD)
『Watching Patricia Walden in the amazing introduction gave me goosebumps. I was a little scared that she was going to make me try it with her. This was a gift to me from a friend. I was very hesitant to even try Yoga, because of my Christian background. My friend sent two DVDs on Yoga to me because of my horrible battle with degenerative arthritis. She said that it would help, and it has.

I found that Patricia Walden was very pleasant. The sessions were not easy. The fact that I have been working out for many years made it a little easier for me, but I still had a week of very sore muscles. I thought I was flexible, until I saw Patricia. The advise I give anyone who is new to working out is that you need to respect and honor your limitations. I love to feel the sensation of going a little past my comfort zone, but I never will be able to do every move exactly like Patricia. I cannot put my bottom on my feet. My knee joint is not good, but I adjust my poses to honor my body. (Brian Krest said it this way, "There is no perfect pose. Just find a place of sensation and hang out with it". I personally have an easier time with the backbend session than the forward bend session. I found out that my hamstrings and hip flexors are tight.

This is a really good DVD. I don't use it as often as some of the newer ones, but I still do like it. It never makes me feel uncomfortable as far as my Christian convictions go.』

『This tape has more depth than any other tape in this genre. Yes, it is challenging, but so is life.

However, I agree with the other reviewers that it is not for beginners; I would recommend it for the intermediate level student as well as the advanced.

The student simply needs to have some good body alignment and correct muscle usage before embarking on this quest.』

『I am glad to see that the dvd is not touted as a beginners workout like the vhs was. I also really do not recommend practicing yoga without taking classes, if classes are not available to you then read as many books as you can on the subject particulary paying attention to alignment principles. You will eventually injure yourself if you do not fully understand how to do the asanas. Look for an Iyengar teacher as they are excellent in teaching alignment. Use this dvd as a complement to your classes.
This workout has two sections, forward bending and backbends, as they are complementary to each other. The forward bending workout is more attainable for beginners, and Patricia Walden provides excellent instruction. The backbending workout is more challenging and if you do not have sufficient strength it will be impossible. I would recommend doing bridge pose instead of upward bow until your strength is improved. Also Patricia instructs you to "step your feet in" Once you are up in upward bow to shorten the distance between hands and feet to intensify the backbend. This is pretty advanced and most people won't be able to do this. My yoga instructor has not taught us to do this yet as a lot of people in my class just have a hard time getting into the pose. So don't do this until you are totally comfortable in the original position!
Another reviewer said that the workout didn't provide enough warm-up before the difficult part and I like to do some sun salutations from Shiva Rea's excellent dvd Yoga Shakti before doing this workout. I still do build a lot of heat by really focusing on the preliminary poses in this dvd though.
I would give this dvd five stars, but because it is not stated as a more advanced workout and could be misleading, I gave it four. I really love this dvd, I believe I get the best workout in the shortest amount of time of any dvd I own. I love the instruction, and the length of time the poses are held. You really get acqainted with the asana! For me, this is the next best thing to my classes.』

Yoga Journal's more advanced offering of yoga stretching exercises presents two routines for flexibility: back stretches and front stretches. Each routine begins with a short warm up, though if one is not already well practiced in yoga stretching techniques, not to mention already flexible, some of these stretches should not be attempted. Even the so-called "moderate" poses for those with less strength and flexibility are difficult to achieve. Patricia Walden encourages the viewer to practice often and work toward the stretching goals, and conscientiously demonstrates the stretches in a methodical manner. The principles of balance and strength in all parts of the body (achieved by practicing both front and back stretches) is a lofty goal for many, but one to work toward in small increments. The two distinct routines in this video are conveniently presented separately so that they can be combined or practiced alternately. (If you're not already on your way to yogic flexibility, in the beginning you may be sitting out a good part of this video.) The production value, like the otherYoga Journalofferings, is consistently good and even. Certain stretches require props such as yoga blocks, but chairs and phone books are a good substitute for the home user.--Gilia Angell

(Restless Legs Syndrome Relief)
『I have found after doing the exercises, the restlessness in my legs is gone, and I am able to sleep well. I focus on the exercises related to my legs, which are many, and simple, even most elderly people should be able to do many of these.』

Unfortunately, after watching the video, I found it would be very difficult to do w/ out all the blocks, mats, and straps. Buy them first, or don't buy this tape. Otherwise, a good film... I watched it while I was eating popcorn. It still lies on its shelf waiting for the day I give in and buy the block set.』

『It adds to my stress level to try to keep up with Suzanne Deason! The pace of this video is very fast, most poses are only held for one breath. So I found I was spending a lot of effort looking up at the TV, and was not getting the mental grounding effect that I was looking for. I much prefer Patricia Walden's PM Yoga, which has a lot of the same poses but at a more relaxed pace.』

(Stress relief? No way!)
『The movements are good in this video and they are great for a beginner, but the speed is unbelievable. It's like they crammed as much as they could into 20 minutes. The poses change so fast. At the beginning, I couldn't believe how fast she goes. The pace slows a little and by the end you are more relaxed, but only still recovering from the fast paced first half. Like I said, the movements are good and a nice program for beginners, but the pace is by no means a good one for stress relief. It should be called Yoga for those in a major rush. This series of videos is outstanding. I have never been disappointed in the past. I recommend looking in this same series, but another video.』

『Something was about to give - I bought this video when I was working 40+ hours a week and commuting 2 hrs. in traffic everyday. I suffered shortness of breath and mental as well as physical fatigue. This video was great because I could just pop it in the vcr and spend twenty minutes doing stretches and poses that truly rejuvenate the whole body (especially targeting the neck and upper back).

I was a more pleasant and content person on the evenings that I did this video and it inspired me to learn more yoga and eventually become a certified teacher. Is it worth the money? Depends on if you really use it as a tool and if it is what you are looking for - an easy and convenient key to destressing after work or whenever. If you're looking for something longer, try Suzanne Deason's Pilates for weight loss. I am a Pilates instructor and it is the dvd that I recommend to my students. It's fantastic.』

『Our 2 year old daughter loves this video. She figured out how to do all of the poses without any instruction from us because the instructor is so clear and simple. The setting is in a grassy park, and the home-spun music is so perfect and non-commercial. Leanne has a life-loving glow about her that makes you smile. It feels like how yoga should be. Not in a fancy studio with music that fades in and out, but just simple. The conversion of yoga poses to animal activities is wonderful. Our 8 month old son loves LeAnne, and his face turns to joy when she introduces herself.』

(Lacks pizazz)
『The video is basically watching a yoga class for kids who are in a field of a park. The teacher does talk directly to the camera, with some nice close-ups, but otherwise it often feels amateurish. The music that they tout is just a woman singing with a guitar, and it's so soft that it's overpowered by the kids' giggles in the video. And the music is not a motivating factor, instead it's more background noise. Although I wasn't impressed with it, my son (who is 6) chooses it over "Silly to Calm," which is what I like better (it's more professional, and the visuals and music are more dynamic). But I think he likes this one because at one point they pretend to drive in a car, and he also likes the Dead Man's pose. (My daughter, who is 4, seems to be able to stick more with "Silly to Calm") Since I bought it for the kids, it's not a total failure, I just wished it was more pleasing to me!』

『My wife takes Yoga and the kids love trying the poses with Mommy. I was wondering if there were any DVD's with direction for kids. My daughters are 2 1/2 and 6 1/2. This video is perfect for them. What a great way to keep your kids interested in exercise without it seeming like exercise. My daughters think it is just something fun to do.』

『I really enjoyed doing this yoga DVD. Kathy Smith isn't too perky and doesn't provide too much useless information during her workouts. The beginner yoga workout is fairly straightforward, although I could have used some better worded instruction on a few of the poses. When you're concentrating on contorting your body into different shapes it's a little annoying to keep having to look up at the TV screen to figure out exactly what you're supposed to be doing. But after you've done it once or twice you know what to do and it's a well-paced but challening workout. And the cool down at the end is extremely relaxing if you complete the whole thing.』

(I loved the original version, love the bundled one better)
『I was a huge fan of Kathy Smith's beginners yoga video, so this reissued version with the addition of the intermediate yoga workout and the added bonuses is right up my alley. Is Kathy Smith a true yoga instructor? No, and if you've done yoga classes, or done any of the Gaiam yoga videos, Kathy's lack of prowess is evident. However, she still offers the best stretching of any yoga video I've ever done. I genuinely feel relaxed after her beginning yoga workout--much like I did when I did weekly yoga class. I can't say the same for the other 5 yoga videos I have.』

This is the best Yoga CD I own. Use it everyday. The Beginners are Tranquility are the best for beginners but definitely may be difficult for the older crowd. I love them and use mostly Beginners everyday. Tried many but love Rainbow Mars. It helps to have had a yoga class prior to using a CD. This is a must purchase for any beginner. The Pure Power and Pure Sweat are not for beginners. They are something to move towards after using the beginner and tranquility CD's. Thank you Rainbow Mars!』


(Mindful and unique guidance in this practice)
『I really love these videos. Whenever I start my day with a Rainbeau Mars practice, I am in a great mood that lasts all day long.

She provides excellent guidance through the movements and has a wonderful way of explaining the intricate details of the asanas and their purpose to you.

I would definitely recommend this set.



(Wonderful flow)
『I really like this set. Rainbeau is a lovely instructor: she has a very sweet, calm and encouraging presence, and the slow flow style of these programs is exactly what I wanted. I never got the PEACE aspect of yoga begore.

I've tried Iyengar yoga (tapes and and classes), but the "let's do pose A. Okay, now let's do pose B" format felt too fragmented and, well, like exercise. I tried power yoga as well (DVDs from two instructors), but I always felt like I was rushing to keep up. Rainbeau's slowly-flowing sequences were a perfect balance: the smooth progression of poses made the whole program feel like a single dance, which really kept me in the moment. I always had enough time to mindfully execute the transition between poses, and enough time to really feel the poses as I held them.

That's not to say it's easy: moving slowly is actually harder than moving quickly, because it's easier to cut corners when you go quickly. Going slowly forces you to use the muscles that support the intermediate positions that you pass through on the way. Plus, the poses can be as intense as you need them to be, as long as you choose the appropriate disk for your level, and push yourself to do each one with intention and commitment.

My only complaint: in the beginner program, there seems to be an error in the voiceover timing during the alternating lunges section. If you follow her voice exactly, you'll end up doing your lunge on the second leg for much longer than on the first. Once I figured this out, it was easy to deal with, but it's something to watch out for.』

Vinyasa Flow for Beginners

(Just keep on inflating)
『I originally thought the ball was fully inflated and was only 46 cm, so I was disappointed. However, a friend who knows more about fitness balls than I said the ball was definitely not inflated to the maximum. So now it's 55 cm and it didn't pop when I sat on it. I'd say I'm very happy with it. An instruction sheet and some system to know when the ball is fully inflated would be VERY helpful. Other people have complained about the pump, and yes, it takes a while to inflate the ball with it, but it does work. The company has changed the tip for the pump (I received both the old one and the new one), and it doesn't leak and fits the inflation hole well. The DVD is useless unless you have a fitness band, and the product description doesn't state that the video requires a fitness band.』

『Ok, I bought this pilates ring after trying out a few different ones at a couple of different stores. This one actually has better resistance than some other brands I've tried. The DVD contains 2 workouts, an older workout for mainly the lower body&abs&is instructed by Madeleine Lewis, and the other workout is newer (and prettier I have to say since it's filmed outside&Madeleine's is filmed indoors) working both upper&lower body, as well as abs. I can't recall the name of the instructor for the 2nd workout. You'll want to buy a CD or DVD case because the DVD comes in just a little paper sleeve. The instruction on both workouts is very very good. I'd rate the difficulty level for Madeleine's a high beginner to low intermediate. The newer workout is probably better rated at solid intermediate to high intermediate. One last note about the ring. It's hard to see from the Amazon pictures, but there is no padding on the inside of the ring for exercises for which your legs will be inside the ring. It really doesn't feel bad using it without the padding on the inside, but it's worth noting if you're particular about that kind of thing. I like the pads on the outside of the ring&the reason I bought this one was partly due to the resistance being better than others, but mainly it was because the pads are not foam. Foam breaks down pretty quickly sometimes,&the pads on this are not foam. They are a soft vinyl or plastic kind of substance. This means the pads won't lose their form, no flaking off of foam or worrying about the foam coming loose from the glue holding it to the ring. The pads are very secure on this ring,&no foam.』
