『I found this tape to not be very challenging at all. Linda Arkin might be a good teacher, and very concerned with proper technique, but the pacing is much too slow. She also talks throughout the entire tape, and spends the first 15 minutes of a 45-minute tape on chatty introductions to the sequences. That leaves 1/2 hour to practice 3 or 4 moves. If you're looking to build on previous yoga knowledge, then this tape is not for you.』

『I am enjoying this tape and feel like I am getting some good out of it. Linda is a good instructor. She does each sequence of poses three times and I am able to push a little further each time. There is a second instructor who shows an advanced form of the poses. There is not a wide variety of poses in this tape but she keeps you moving throughout the routine. I have all four of her tapes and this is not my favorite but it is still good. There are a few times when she doesn't cue pose changes when you are not looking at the TV.』

『I'd say that this video was disappointing. The instructions are fairly good and easy to follow but so much is left out. There needed to be more postures offered. The meditation was okay but I wish she'd not talked so much!』

『Ananda Yoga for Emotional Healing delivers on what it says it will. It is an hour-long video that combines hatha yoga poses, breathing exercises, and affirmations, and ends with a guided meditation. Overall, I really enjoyed it. The poses seemed designed for beginners, and Lisa Powers gave step-by-step instructions on how to get into them. The breathing exercises and affirmations were helpful in calming me down. Overall, I came away with a feeling of relaxation, balance, and a little bit of a stretch.

A few words of caution, though. First, the postures in this tape were ideal for me, a beginner to yoga, but may not be challenging for those who are more advanced. On the other hand, for those who are simply looking for a way to relax, this video may still be useful. Second, this tape is not a good one for those looking for exercise videos. Finally, the tape stated that you need a cushion, blanket, and strap. You will need the folded blanket, and may or may not need the cushion. The strap is only necessary for one pose, and then only if you have trouble with your flexibility; I didn't use it at all.

Overall, a very good video, and one that I would recommend.』
『Like another offering from Ananda,Yoga to Awaken the Chakras, this tape focuses more on the inner effects of yoga than on its purely physical benefits. But where the former focuses on the body's sevencharkasas the seat of our emotions,Ananda Yoga for Emotional Healingconcentrates on the emotions themselves. Instructor Lisa Powers, herself a breast cancer survivor, presents hatha yoga as a means to develop "inner strength, calmness, and the ability to respond to life's trials" as well as a vehicle to express your emotions and promote a "stronger flow of positive energy." Thus the various poses demonstrated, such as those for the hamstrings, hips, and shoulders (there are also some backbends, twists, balancing poses, and more), are all referenced to their emotional content. The sphinx pose, for instance, isn't just a simple lying backbend but a way to "overcome fear of failure," whilejanu sirsanasa, the one-legged forward bend, is not only to open the hamstrings but to "release fear and relax the fight-or-flight response." Powers also supplies positive affirmations (such as "I live protected by the infinite light" or "What I do today will create a new and better future, filled with inner joy") to accompany many of the postures, as well as a lengthy guided relaxation at the end. Will they work? Can yoga really be used to expunge jealousy, anger or grief? That will be up to you. If you can cast aside cynicism and doubt, then surrender to the power of the breath and the poses, you might be surprised.--Sam Graham

『I loved my Yoga Zone Conditioning&Stress Release VHS (part of a boxed set I purchased in 1997) so much that I brought it with me when I moved to Europe. Afraid that the tape would wear out or the recorders become obsolete I now own it in DVD! I'm sure blu-ray is next...

11 years ago as a former ballet dancer I needed a way to stay supple and stress free after I quit dancing. Now as a Pilates teacher I use this tape to start my day relaxed and stretched. It is the perfect antithesis for an active Pilates teacher who regularly uses her core. I also love the momentum of this tape to get my day started, working out aches and pains. The clear and precise information Alan Finger imparts develops body awareness, an important aspect to owning a body. Much like a car, one must listen to the rattles and wheezes to know when to add oil or send it for a tune-up. Mr. Finger has a soothing voice and he never says too much going slowly enough to make it a pleasurable session everytime, even after 11 years! It is the perfect meditative way to start my day.

Lastly, I was also able to use Conditioning and Stress Release at home while doing physical therapy to rehabilitate my shoulder after arthroscopy for a torn supraspinatus tendon. Routinely and gently doing the many neck and shoulder stretching exercises finally helped me to realize my goal of almost 100% full use of my arm.

I recommend this tape for anyone interested in starting yoga. The boxed set which includes this DVD is perfect for continuing on with meditation and the asanas.』

『This video is way to basic, and you barely get anything out of it. Too much talking and not enough flowing. If you're a beginner, start with the intermediate videos. They're just as easy to follow, but you get more out of them.』

『I have several yoga DVDs and VHS tapes, but Alan Finger and Yoga Zone are among my favorites. This particular title, "Conditioning and Stress Release" is one I use the most. I think it adequately addresses both flexibility/strength and stress release, and no matter how many times I do this DVD I do not tire of the moves. Alan is very soothing to listen to, and describes the asanas so well that you need not look at the screen to know what you should do after the first few viewings. I had this in VHS format and replaced it with DVD, I loved it that much. I take it with my portable DVD player when I travel.』

(Not sure this is good for ALL beginners)
『This is my second yoga DVD. I am a 32 y/o male who is trying to take up yoga as a way of dealing with chronic neck/low back pain and also stress relief. My first DVD was Element: Yoga For Beginners with Elena Brower. I felt it was excellent overall.

This DVD, however, just hasn't been very good for me. It seems less like a beginner DVD and more like a just past beginner/early intermediate stress relief type DVD. The instructor, Alan Fingers, is very thorough in his descriptions. Quiet honestly though, for stress relief, he talks entirely too much and his voice is not soothing at all. Its a non stop voice that sounds more like a professor in a lecture hall than a yoga instructor who is trying to help you relax. Elena Brower's voice and music combo was far more soothing and I had always felt an immediate sense of ease and release when starting her DVD.

Overall, I feel like this one may be good for a lot of people. I may even come back to it later after I have become more comfortable with my breathing and postures. I just didn't find it to be a good DVD for my purposes and tastes. However, considering the knowledge and instruction given are top notch and my issues are with the presentation/voice/etc., I would rate it 3 stars because it seems to have a lot of good information.』

『I have practiced yoga for a number of years, and although I still only consider myself beginner-intermediate, I am in fairly good "yoga-shape". I have 4 Yoga Zone dvds, and this is the one I pull out when I am sore from some other vigorous activity, like hiking or a cardio class. For me, this video is less like a yoga workout and more like yoga physical therapy. Don't get me wrong, it's not easy... yoga never is! But this is the least strenuous of all of my yoga videos, and my favorite for a good stretch and some de-stressing.』
『Some people take up yoga to build strength and flexibility; others are primarily looking to reduce stress and tension. This 55-minute program, while purporting to address both groups, is actually much more appropriate for the latter. Yoga Zone founder Alan Finger does an excellent job not merely emphasizing the importance of the breath--the single most vital element of any yoga practice--but also explaining yoga breathing techniques, followed by a series of easy stretches (for the neck, shoulders, arms, and such) and a variety of standing, sitting, and lying poses beneficial to yogis of all levels. 『I bought this years ago&though they are a bit hard for those who are out of shape, I wouldn't recommend them for novices, but they are still beginner level in terms of physical/flexibility level.
The lower body is with Susanne Season. The music is light, the scene is her near the edge of a cliff with gorgeous mountain range behind her. She is alone&there is no modifications.
There is no sun salutations, but a lot of downward dog, standing fwd bends, chair&mountain. Add is lunges, hand/knee with arm/leg balance, donward dog with 1 leg lifted, plank, upward dog, warrior 1 2&3, triangle, side angle, half moon, dancer's pose, bridge, reclined single leg stretch, boat, sitting fwd bend, wide legged fwd bend, reclined cobblers, etc.
If you own several yoga dvds, the pace is not power fast, she holds it about 2 full breaths. I loved the workout though, there are many poses were if you do too many sun salutations, you never have time for many other poses.

『I am not a beginner by any means. I have been studying various forms of yoga for 10-plus years. I had no idea this was a beginners workout when I did it and would never recommend this for beginners.
It has, however, a very lovely, inspiring, effective, lower body workout that I plan to do often. Suzanne Deason is wonderful. Her exercising on the edge of a cliff is a bit terrifying to watch and I don't generally like yoga DVDs with "scenery" but this one works. I skip the Rodney Yee portion because he is not my favorite instructor though, of course, this is just personal preference!』


(No, not for absolute beginners)
『I have pretty good fitness training and have taken some yoga. This has been a good first DVD for me to use to complement outside instruction. The 25 minute routines are short enough to easily fit in to my day, or add on a workout that includes my stationary bike. The difficulty of the poses is not terribly high, but they aren't pedestrian, either. The pace is fairly quick, which I like. I particularly like the instructor for the Lower Body section. I like Rodney Yee, but I often find that I'm not in the mood for his ego as I choose a DVD to practice with.If you are an absolute beginner, or not comfortable with yoga, these routines will go too fast for you. For an enthusiastic novice, this DVD has been great, and has launched me to other DVDs.』

(Be committed, see results in a few months)
『When I bought this DVD, I thought that I would be able to do all of the routines right away. But, after the first viewing and attempts, I knew that it would be a challenge. Rodney Yee and Susan Gleason present the routines clearly but quickly. For beginners this is the only fault with the contents. Furthermore, the routines are rigorous. I decided to follow just the abs rountine. After three times a week for about a month, I began to feel an increase in strength, but it was not until I had been doing the same routine for about four months before I could see a difference and longer before anyone else first took notice. After 8 months of the abs, I added the upper body routine and after 6 more months of each routine 3 times per week, I can slowly feel and see a physical improvement. Next, I will add the lower body routine and by the middle of the year I hope to have all three under my belt.

This is an excellent program for beginners, but it takes months for it to be effective. Those naysayers who have reviewed this product may not have had the willpower to stick with it, or they wanted miracle results. That will not happen. Clearly the yoga instructors have been working at this for years and the viewers have to remember that. If a viewer is easily disenheartened, this is not going to be effective. But, if one is willing to put in three to four days a week for six months or so, then the speed and the postures can be learned and practiced in the comfort of one's home. (Once it gets too easy, add some wrist and ankle weights to build up tone and strength.)

To build up strength and flexibility, I also reccomend Tamilee Webb's DVD, Total Body Stretch for Beginners and Jorge Cruise's book, 8 Minutes in the Morning. These three resources combined make for an effective and efficient weight loss, management, and strenght and toning program.』


(Varied yoga practices for toning and building strength)
『In this set, Living Arts offers three solid yoga practices, each focusing on a separate area of the body. However, with the exception of the abs video, I definitely would not recommend these practices for the beginning audience to which they are marketed, as the instruction is not overly detailed and the upper body practice in particular is quite challenging. Also, although these are billed as being 20-minute practices, each one is actually a bit longer.

That being said, I have owned these videos for some time and really enjoy them. The 22-minute abs video was my first-ever experience with yoga, and I found that I was able to follow it without any prior yoga knowledge. The practice gradually builds from gentle warm-up stretches to isometric-type movements which challenge your core strength. It is led by Rodney Yee, one of my favorite yoga instructors; he provides excellent cuing, and his voice is particularly calm and soothing. The upper body practice is lead by Suzanne Deason. She begins on the floor but moves on to standing postures, including several balancing poses such as Warrior III, King Dancer, and Half Moon. Those who have not tried these postures before will definitely find them challenging (particularly given how quickly Suzanne moves in and out of the poses). When I first started using this video, I needed to modify most of the standing poses with a block (Suzanne shows how to use props at the end of the practice), but after using this video for several years, I am now able to follow along with good form and no props (although I still wish Suzanne moved a bit more slowly). This practice is 25 minutes long. At 27 minutes, the upper body yoga practice is both the longest and the most challenging in this series. It is again led by Rodney Yee, who builds heat by taking you through several series of sun salutations, gradually adding more strenuous postures such as Bow, Camel, and Upward Bow. The latter is a backbend which you push up into from a lying position, and on my first few tries, I thought it would be impossible for me to ever acheive this pose. However, I persisted in using the video, and one day, I was finally able to push up. At the end of this practice, you will definitely feel like you have had an intense workout for your upper body.

These practices provide an excellent opportunity for experienced beginners to expand their home practice and move towards an intermediate level; those who already consider themselves to be intermediate will enjoy the intensity of the practices within short time periods. In conclusion, this set would be an excellent addition to virtually any home practice collection.』

(Great mat)
『I am a beginner at yoga and just got this as my first mat. I love it--it's comfortable and sticky enough so I don't slip. The only complaint I have is that it might be TOO sticky, but I think this might wear off a bit over time. The rubber smell isn't overly strong to the point where it bothers me.

It's eco-friendly, and it's more comfortable on my spine than other mats I've tried. I recommend it.』

『Love the mat..hate the smell. I had to leave it open for days in the back of my car with the windows down..I sprayed it with some strong spray fragrance from bath and body works and its still a little stinky. So if you buy this mat and want to use it right away, get some mat cleaner or have some good smelling body spray to douse the thing with so you don't get weird looks in the studio. I still think its was worth buying since they plant a tree for every mat sold. To me, thats worth the stench.』

『I needed a mat which would not only remain 'in place' but also one that would allow my feet to move smoothly (without sticking to the mat) when doing vinyasa (flow) yoga. This mat met both needs.

I do yoga in my garage on a concrete floor. I have tried many mats on many surfaces (including thick and thin rugs!)but none would stick to the floor and yet allow me to move my feet quickly in sun salutations and glide smoothly when moving in modified chaturangas! My best solution was a bamboo mat (cloth on one side)...which sticks like glue to the concrete floor...and this mat on top of the bamboo mat. (I tried a mysore cotton mat on top of the bamboo and it would have been fine except that it was not long enough. I would have needed either a shorter bamboo mat or a longer mysore cotton mat. The solace mat works well because it is cotton on one side...for easy flow movements...yet sticks to the bamboo on the other side. Therefore, it can be shorter than the bamboo mat.)

I love this combination so much that I got a 2nd bamboo mat (for a total space of 6'x8') and use 2 of the solace mats on top of the bamboo. This allows me ample room for reclining twists and even roll-overs (when I am experimenting on my own or when doing yin yoga)!

I have recommended them to all my yogi friends!

(Nice Material but over priced)
『I returned this product because I found it unnecessary for Bikram yoga. It is a beautiful mat but overpriced for what it is - a thin rug. It reminded me of a kitchen or bathroom rug. A towel will do for most hot yoga but if you want a distinct mat and don't mind spending the money,I would highly recommend this mat.』
