『The energy vortices or charkas are located within the cerebrospinal system and are the points of interaction between the spirit and the body. Each of the 7 main charkas is also connected to certain glands in the body and therefore has a role in the hormonal system.

The psychophysical energy dealt with here is electrochemical and operates through the life force (prana) that moves through the body along the nadi channels. The seven main chakras are all connected to the main nadi. By understanding this system one can cultivate a higher state of being.

This illuminating and comprehensive book includes the following chapters: 1. The Principles of Tantra Yoga, with a section on states of consciousness; 2. Kundalini Yoga; 3. The Essentials of the Chakras; 4. Chakras, Rebirth&Spirituality. The appendix consists of extracts from the Hindu scriptures on the various stages of Yoga.

The aforementioned Chapter 3 deals with each of the chakras in turn, providing a description of each, the psychological energies that operate in it, the shape, yantra and color of each chakra, its predominating sense aspects, its seed sound (bija), number of petals, residing deity and ruling planet. It was interesting to learn about the Soma Chakra, an unnumbered energy point also called Amirta or Indu, that resides within the 7th or Sahasrara chakra.

The principles of the chakra system and practical applications are discussed in detail, including visualization techniques. The text is enhanced by beautiful color paintings of each energy vortex plus plenty of interesting black and white illustrations. The book concludes with a glossary and index.

Johari's revised and expanded edition of Chakras is a very accessible work and packed with facts. As such it is ideal for both the novice and the advanced energy worker. It provides all the information, techniques and tools to activate one's energy system for enhancing spiritual growth, balanced emotions and mental and physical well-being.』

『Why Not?
This book is very confusing, it uses a lot of sanskrit words,
which just makes it impossible to comprehend.
The information is presented with no form, they're is no way to remember everything. The book has no life in it.
The book needs more pictures, and the use of english terms instead of sanskrit.
If you are trying to learn about chakras, and yoga, this isn't the book for you.
It is like a sanskrit dictionary.
The part that really bugs me, is that it says the book is about chakras, when most of it is about Yogi Meditation.

Expect for that, the book has nice pictures (but few) and very descriptive.』

『I was a bit suspicious of all the 5-star reviews by "people" who apparently read only this author, but I purchased the book anyway because I enjoy breathing. It's one of the few things that all humans have in common, but the quality of our breathing varies tremendously, even in a given individual. I have no doubt that even slight changes in the quality of our breathing can have huge implications over the course of a lifetime, in terms of health, productivity, and even intellect.

This book teaches a simple method of breathing that nearly anyone can practice nearly anywhere. The author recommends doing the practice for five minutes, twice daily, but the beauty of it is that you will probably grow more attuned to your breathing and will want to breathe more deeply and efficiently even when not doing full-on spinal breathing. Incidentally, you do not need to know how to meditate or do yoga to enjoy spinal breathing.

I also found the book well written and edited, with sufficient detail but no longer than it needs to be.』


(Nice simple presentation, but inaccurate information)
『While this book promotes a clear and simple cleansing of the spine, it is also loaded with misinformation and downright incorrect information.

The technique that is presented here, is simply a clearing of the Kundalini channel. It in fact gets the Kundalini moving, yet nowhere does it really allude to that. It also incorrectly states that Kundalini energy is sexual energy, and that is not true. It is easy to confuse the two energies, but they are completely different and have very different uses.

The author also has you run the Kundalini energy from the root chakra to the brow, and eventually he has it running forward through and out the front of the brow chakra, instead of up and out the crown chakra. Why? Because he doesn't want you to have a "premature" enlightenment. Why is it that so many Eastern teachers want you to avoid enlightenment? Is it because they are falsely teaching that you need a guru (them) in order to experience it? I really don't know why they do it, but clearing the crown chakra is just as important as clearing all the other chakras.

The author presents possible negative effects of this technique (jerking, twitching) and tells one to stop if it happens, instead of presenting information on how to gently control it.

There is a great deal of misinformation regarding Kundalini and how to run it already being taught, and this book adds to it.

I have been clearing my spine and my entire reality with Kundalini energy for more than 25 years and I would have given this book only one star, but the author does present pranayma in clear and simple terms, yet with the misinformation mentioned above.

『I am new to yoga and this tape is fabulous. You can truly get addicted to doing yoga because it is so relaxing. Don't be fooled you get a really good workout but it is at a slow pace and when you finish you are filled with peace and serenity. What a godsend! Can't wait to do it again.』

(Good yoga effort from The Firm)
『I own this DVD, and do this workout every Sunday. I do the Firm daily, and this is my workout for my active rest day. It is great for the non-yoga person and yoga enthusiast both, IMO. I used to do yoga daily, but missed the fun and variety of aerobic weight-training. It is not a very long workout, about 35 minutes, and is good for those times when you need to stretch out. The music's not bad and the instruction is relatively clear. The instructor is not annoying at all, just pretty chill and she seems to be knowledgeable.

As an intermediate/advanced exerciser with decent natural flexibility(I used to dance and can do splits and stuff), I still found myself challenged by this workout. There are some ab balancing exercises which I find particularly hard, but that's good. If you can do a workout easily your first time, it's not a good workout. This workout is a nice balance to the other Firm workouts- it still works your muscles and heart, but in a different and gentle way.

If you have qualms about doing yoga for religious reasons, this is probably a good place to try yoga- this is not really meant to be spiritual at all(as far as I can tell). There is no chanting or meditation. It wouldn't bother me if there had been, but I just thought I'd bring that up. It's really just more of a deep stretching workout.』


(Yoga pure and simple)
『The Firm has done it again. My core and lower back feel incredible after this workout. I wanted an intro to yoga without all the "jargon" and I got exactly what I was looking for with this video. Anyone who stretches and works on their flexibility regularly will be familiar with the movements and postures in this video, but there's enough of a learning curve to give those who aren't athletic/flexible something to aspire to and keep motivated. I plan to use this video on rest days or on days when I'm too tired to workout at a much faster pace.』

『I am in the minority, but I did not care for this yoga workout. I found the cueing confusing and uneven. The instructor does not state what yoga pose we are doing either which would be helpful. She never says- this is the triangle pose or warrior I. There is inadequate time spent in the stretches and the transitioning is rocky.
I enjoy many other Firm workouts but this one was a dud. I would recommend Rodney Yee Yoga DVD's or David Swenson and/or Baron Baptiste. You would get a more valuable Yoga Stretch workout and Yoga knowledge from these instructors rather than the Firm's take on Yoga.』

『I started with this DVD in an aerobics class that I take. We do a different workout video everyday and this one is by far my favorite out of over 50 we've done.

I'm not very good at fast pace kickboxing type videos and this was the perfect solution for me. I was able stretch myself extremely well and gain a lot of flexibility. I'm an avid tennis player and I've noticed an improvement in my game since I've been working out with this video.

Usually, I'm turned off by yoga. I don't like the "mystical elements" most videos try to incorporate. This workout left that part out, but still manages to be extremely relaxing.

I'd recommend this video to a beginner or a pro!』

(An authentic, powerful Kundalini experience)
『Unlike so many recent Kundalini DVD's with all sorts of bells and whistles, this simply edited masterpiece truly demonstates what a real Kundalini experience ought to be. Look, it's not about whether there's music or a chant at the end. It's about whether a kriya really forces a person to "keep up" and push past the point where one really wants to quit an action. This tape has A&B salutations, something I always thought should have existed on several kundalini tapes. I know several real Kundalini teachers and have seen this done. Unfortunately, most Kundalini marketers want the viewer to think he or she is getting something far different from classic yoga which uses salutations, to ensure the buyer doesn't get confused. The truth is there are universal components to all yoga and the salutation is part of this. April Bernardi moves through a very hard set with a real sense of how long kinetic actions are supposed to continue. Most Kundalini tapes fail to do this, trying to put in too many actions for too short of a time. Real breakthroughs in Kundalini only occur when the will is truly challenged. I also lift weights, and have done all varieties of yoga for nearly a decade. When it comes to truly connecting the mind and body together and recentering the self with a fantastic inner piece, this DVD achieves this. As I stated, the holds are for so long that even though I consider myself to be reasonably strong, I must push myself past a point of exhaustion. The other great thing about using this DVD as a real practice is that all the annoying verbal nonsense accompanying most yoga DVD's in general is missing. April simply instructs the viewer how to do each exercise and without continuous dialogue, one can actually focus on the mantra Sat/Nam internally without distraction. I am not buying yoga DVD's for cheap entertainment or to be psychologically uplifted. I am buying them to do the routine and go on with my day. This DVD is something I can use in the morning or even after work and if I've had a trying day, it completely recenters me. I've had a lot of suspiciously bad side effects from Kundalini DVD's which somehow either aren't good routines for the whole body or force too much exhale holding and breath of fire, creating a turbo charged high I don't really need. Like Baron Baptiste's Long And Lean Power Yoga DVD which doesn't have everything in the world but has holds which truly work the body because of how long they are, this DVD truly challenges the practitioner more than all the recent high end over produced DVD's which never force a person to test endurance of the will, the body, and the mind. If you want an unassuming, simple, yet real 60 minutes which I do as one unit even though it's broken up into two sets, this is the DVD for you. It's ironic that the best Kundalini DVD I've purchased in years hasn't even gotten one revue yet. Most people who buy these tapes don't understand the true notion of raising Kundalini or augmenting the electromagnetic field around the body. After doing this DVD, I can feel a real Kundalini raising, something quite different from merely feeling hyperactive.』

However, this is just a basic intro to vinyasas and while it claims to have beginning, intermediate, and advanced postures, the camera rarely ever focuses on the girl doing the advanced forms so how can we follow it? I recommend this DVD to those who want to learn basic yoga postures but not to those already well-versed in yoga. It will frustrate you as she focuses on the beginners, dragging out the routine and slowing me down without offering the option to focus on the advanced. I am giving this to a friend who is new to yoga. I prefer Sara Ivanhoe's 20 Min Yoga Makeover: Flat Abs for a good core workout.』

『I think the name is deceiving. While the stretches are great as is the instruction, there's WAY too much of it. Some of my pet peeves with this video are:

Too MUCH time spent on instruction;
Too much repetition;
Too much focus on arms and legs and not enough on core;
Actually BOTHERED my lower back vs. relaxing it

I can't see how this would strengthen your core. While I realize I have a pretty strong core and a pretty strong, flat lower stomach, even if I didn't I don't see how this would build those muscles. Maybe I'm missing something. I wouldn't say don't try it, but if you are looking for something closer to a miracle than doing nothing at all, this won't do it.』

I never buy a workout dvd that is going to take any longer than 45 minutes, this one comes in segments but if you do the whole series it wont be any longer than 45 minutes. (Beginner Yoga for those not into mind/body connection)
『Yoga has bee around for thousands of years&can ease/heal many health issues.. burning fat/calories is the least that it does. This is another Westernized/aerobicized version of a deeper/beneficial physical healing session.
There is only chapter choices&choice of instruction w/ or w/o music. The music is the usual fast beat elevator music of most fitness videos that are meant to be soothing.
Set the usual hardwood floor&lighted wall stage w/one woman showing the beginner&the other advanced, Desirée Bartlett leads a toning/calorie killer emphasized easy paced yoga workout. As another reviewer said, with Desiree taking her time telling you what's coming next, you are standing there resting, those who aren't beginners will get bored. I found her lack of instruction on dangers of injury if done incorrectly disturbing like most Westernized yoga. Yes, you can move your body w/o knowing you should turn your head a certain way, but if repeated, you may cause strain or a neck ache over time if you don't listen to the discomfort when you do a pose incorrectly. She also will take time say showing a move that is considered intermediate, like standing hand to foot balancing (utthita Hasta Padangusthasana A) first explaining how the beginner does it w/a belt&then the advanced which is a big time eater.
Warm-up - 5 min
Sun salutations - mountain, standing side bends, standing fwd bend, downward dog, plank, chaturanga, cobra.
Series I - 10 min - Standing poses - down dog, cobra, knee to nose stretch a few times, crescent, standing hand to foot balancing
Series 2 - 10 min
Mountain, chair, bear (chair deeper w/airplane arms), standing fwd bend, down dog, chaturanga, up dog, warrior 1, warrior 2, reverse warrior, side angle, chaturanga, up dog, down dog, warrior poses&side angle again (explained in length), plank, up dog, down dog, same thing AGAIN but w/a variation added of "sunrise sunset"(warrior 2 w/raised arms&a torso side bend, interesting but didn't feel it), boat (w/arms pointed fwd together&torso twists), down dog, standing fwd bend, mountain.
Series 3 - 10 min
Mountain, standing fwd bend, plank, chaturanga, updog, down dog, siting straight leg fwd bend, lie down, pilates roll ups, reclined knees to side spinal twist (WINDOW WIPERS she calls them?), spine rocking, reverse plank/up facing plank, table, sitting spinal sage twist, bridge, reclined knee to side spinal twist (again&held longer), sitting torso side bend.

I am an advanced beginner who enjoys the trust emphasis of yoga as I said, so this dvd annoyed me, especially all the repeating of poses so she can give her limited explanation&never holding the pose for long. I find it a good toning workout for those who are beginners&don't like the more spiritual, authentic yoga. Those with muscle/joint limitations would be better off finding a beginner yoga video with MORE instruction on how to avoid injury unlike this one.

(Not for the core workout lover)
『I love core work and was very excited about this DVD. Unfortunately the workout did not live up to my expectations.

The production is professional and the instructor is pleasant. The setting is inside a studio and two yoginis show modifications, one for beginners and one for advanced yogis. The workout is well chaptered into three approx. 10 minute sections and one would think they'd make great add-ons... but they don't. That's because not much happens in those 10 minutes. There's a lot of talking and not enough workout. The poses are repeated maybe two or three times and they don't flow together which creates a stop/start feel to each practice.

The instructor usually pauses between poses to explain what's coming next. For that reason this would make a great beginners' practice. But advanced beginners and beyond will probably find it dull. There is one fun pose that I haven't seen before. If I recall correctly, the instructor calls it "bear" and it's a flow from chair to airplane. Unfortunately, that's the only highlight, at least for me.

If you are not an absolute beginner and are looking for a core yoga routine that is challenging and fun then there are much better ones available. Try Sara Ivanhoe's 20 Min Yoga Makeover - Flat Abs from her Yoga Makeover series. Or even Rodney Yee: ABS Yoga for Beginners. They both clock in around 20 minutes. If you're looking for something shorter, then there's Self - Firm Flat Abs Fast. The yoga chapter comes in under 10 minutes and provides a nice little core workout.』
