『I was really put off by the chanting, I guess mostly because the cover of the box did not tell me this was a chanting yoga video. I also found the instructor's approach to be distracting and annoying. But mostly, it was the chanting.』

(Great Introduction to Ashtanga for someone who has never done yoga)
『The bad reviews are coming from yoga teachers, or non-beginner yogis. Yes, her voice is monotone. But she goes really slowly which is a very good thing for beginners. I'm also a yoga teacher and even I like to go back to this video once in a while for a very basic, slow series of poses that is still sweat-inducing. It's good to go back to basics sometimes and focus only on the breath and movement. While her voice is monotone, sometimes it's nice not to have the teacher's personality always there.

The difference between this DVD and "Introductory Poses" should be apparent. "Introductory Poses" is Suryanamaskara A and B. This DVD includes A and B as well, but goes on to add a few more poses from the series.

I don't think a beginners DVD should adhere strictly to the traditional Ashtanga series. It would scare too many people off.』

『I really like this DVD. It doesn't go through the whole primary series. It just goes through the two sun salutations and the standing poses, but I'm new enough to need that because I'm not ready for the whole series. It's also slower paced for beginner's to get used to the correct form. She explain's in her interview that she purposely leaves out the whole series because she's taught long enough to know what beginner's can handle. If you are looking for more of the primary series on DVD, Richard Freeman has a three DVD set of very challenging moves. I'm starting out with this DVD first. Yes, she has that Lilith voice, but I thought it was pretty funny.』

『I bought this on VHS with out any prior knowlege of yoga at all. I am very pleased that this has been my introduction. This video shows that Yoga is a real life "practice" not just a form of exercise. The first time I did it after the "A" series I was done! But something deeply quiet was created inside of me by it...and it stayed with me for a while... so I kept going back to it...Now I can do the entire session and the positive effects, mental and physical... are amazing.
I really appreciate that the instructor seems to expect the viewer to be able to do the exercises, she speaks with an authority that pushes you to want to do the movements correctly. Which after all is the point!

『Ten years ago (in 1998) I was taking an Ashtanga Yoga class with a talented if not overly ambitious instructor. For a few months I was doing fine and enjoying the many benefits of the practice, but I took on too much too soon and pinched a nerve in my leg. I shied away thinking it was not for me. I'm 45 and still `active' and just last year I fell off my mountain bike and fractured my clavicle and tore muscle and cartilage in both my shoulders. Not wanting to wallow too long in my new pain and suffering I went to the library to find this superb "beginners practice" DVD with my new hero Nicki Doane. I do the Sun Salutations A&B by following the DVD 5-6 times a week and my shoulder flexibility and strength after 5 weeks is in amazing recovery. The DVD is superbly filmed and produced on Maui on a verdant mountain spot. Nicki Doane is so clear and so confident that I look forward to my early morning sessions nearly every day. Knowing my humble origins, post surgery, I recommend this DVD for anyone who believes in the body's ability to heal itself - given the proper framework.』
Yoga Journal's Ashtanga Yoga: Beginners Practicecombines breathing and standing poses, including many repetitions of two different Sun Salutations, then various standing forward bends, and side angle bends for balance, flexibility, and strength. The pace of this 67-minute practice is slow, calming, and physically challenging. Remarkably fluid and flexible instructor Nicki Doane explains clearly and in detail how to do each pose and integrate the breathing. Although called a "beginners practice," true beginners will find it challenging, and no modifications are demonstrated for the less flexible, although of course you are instructed to stay at your own level. 『It is because of Kathy Smith that I love yoga. I've had many of her exercise tapes/DVDs over the years, and decided to try yoga several months ago. I love this DVD, and I'm happy to say that I'm getting fitter and stronger. Kathy is an excellent instructor, and doesn't speak in a sing-song voice like many do. I feel fantastic when done practicing, and am proud of myself for getting fitter. I also have and love Yoga Sculpt, also by Kathy Smith.』

『This is a very good DVD's for a beginner. This DVD starts lying on the ground with abdominal breathing exercises and then moves on to stretches (knees to chest etc) and then twist (knees to ground etc.)This is bit different than most yoga DVD's start, but I like the change. The practice starts out with a more relaxed and calm atmosphere.
Then on to hands and knee poses (Cat-Cow, knees to chest) and then standing. There are only a few standing poses (high lunge, side-angle, forward bend with a chair, etc) but they are held long enough so you can feel the effect of the pose.
It ends again on the floor with forward bends and relaxation. Beginners will learn about posture, foot placement, breath work and alignment. The total workout is about 1 hour and is well cued, expertly demonstrated and has a person to the right who modifies most moves. You will need a chair, strap, and or wall available to complete the practice. Very nice』

『Granted I am not the fittest person video on earth, I did find this to be an excellent yoga video if you are fit and never done yoga. If you could stand to lose some more weight like me then you might want to wait a little longer. Kathy was great in her instructions and it went at a nice easy pace. You do need a few things for the video: a chair, a strap or long bath towel. Head and wrist bands are optional. I did sweat to this video. The only down side to this video and I am not alone in this (read other people reviews) some of the poses are held a little too long and the video is fifty minutes long. I did have to stop half way through to take a mini breather. I would recomend this video to another person.』

『This is the first yoga video I ever bought, and it's the only one that I keep coming back to!

My only complaint is the length. At 50+ minutes long, the video is too long for me to do the whole thing every day. I tend to do just the floor poses and then I skip to the guided relaxation.

I do feel great afterward. It's a great way to get rid of a headache. I even found that it helped with my carpal tunnel symptoms, which wasn't something I was expecting it to do!』

『I have never done yoga before and I wanted to try it so I read some reviews on this particular DVD and decided to go for it. It was okay. I felt that she kind of babbled too much and the poses were held for quite a while. I didn't exactly find it as relaxing as it probably should have been.

I have only done the video once. I believe in giving things a second chance so I will do that with this video, but I'm not convinced that my star-rating or feelings will change.』

『Bought the two dvd set. The exercises were a bit softer than what I was looking for; seemed to be aimed at continous gentle movement rather than stretching into and maintaining positions. There did seem to be the advertised several hours of viewing. However the menu navigation did not respond well either to playing on my computer or my dedicated dvd player; gave up trying after a while.

Contacted the producer and prompt restitution was made. Five stars for service.

Schlorholtz has arranged the routines on the disk to provide many different options in level of exercise and time commitment needed to complete the routines. Doing them regularly has been very beneficial in terms of general health and flexibility. By creating your own customized program of routines, you really can find an individual, progressive path from gentle beginner exercises (where I was when I broke my ankle) to more challenging levels. 『I just did this video for the first time this morning and I was surprised at how sore my knees were afterward. Now they are not the greatest to begin with, but not terrible either - I can run a few miles if I'm careful. But I took a yoga class at the local college this past semester, and I had no problems whatsoever with my knees. The instructor gave us time to get into each pose correctly, the whole while giving tips on how to do each pose correctly, and then gave us time to get into the next pose correctly.

THIS VIDEO, however, DOES NOT give one time to move from pose to pose correctly, nor adequate tips on how to get into the poses correctly. I'm sure that's why my knees are sore. I don't see other complaints of this, so if you have no problems with your knees to begin with you may not have one with this video. But if you do have creaky knees, or cannot run because of knee issues, I would not recommend this video.

Beyond the knee issue, the video provides a decent amount of stretching, light strengthening maneuvers, and a couple of balance poses - which is all you can really ask of a 35 minute more-or-less beginning video.

I would not count on this video as my main exercise for weight loss. It is a nice adjunct as it will help with flexibility and balance, but if my experience in achieving and maintaining a 50-lb weight loss is any indication, you would do well to consider more strength training and some cardio that involves moving yourself in a way that requires real exertion, and not just movement per se. Try running (not jogging), jumping rope, swimming (sprints, not leisurely), cycling, rowing, etc. in addition to strength training. Of course you will need to work up to those levels - always start slowly, but do keep pushing yourself. Also cut out all sugar and grains, eat lean protein, fresh organic fruits and vegetables and you will lose quickly and without hunger pangs. Sugar and grains fuel the appetite, protein and vegetables quell it. And I do love yoga for the gains one can make in core strength, flexibility, and balance, so it's definitely worth taking a class or finding an excellent video. Good luck!』

『I really like this workout. It is easy to follow. I also have Pilates weight loss for dummies, but I like this one better. It is a 35 minute workout. 20 minutes of standing yoga and 15 minutes of mat work. I would recommend it.』

『I bought this DVD in search of a yoga-based weight loss routine, and found exactly what I was looking for. I have some basic yoga experience and while I don't know if this routine would be feasible for a real beginner, I would recommend it to anyone else. The pace is lively and intense, though not so much so that it takes twenty minutes to cool down. I was painfully sore for about two days after my first run-through, but I was surprised how dramatically the charlie horse eased with only one or two more run-throughs. Chris Freytag did seem a bit eerily robotic at first, but again it was easy to adjust too, as was the music.

My main issue with this program is the few sections during the mat work that I find too fast-paced. Specifically, it is difficult for me to move from either version of side-plank to child's pose and back as fast as Freytag does. Still, it is just something to work on. I also wish that just a bit more relaxation was added to the end, but the amount provided is sufficient.

In short, I would not hesitate to recommend this DVD to anyone with a familiarity with the groundwork of yoga who is looking for a workout. I would certainly purchase another Dummies program along these lines, should one ever be released.』

『This DVD was a pleasant surprise when I first borrowed it from my local library (and I've borrowed all that they have). It's reasonable and paced well (at least for me). Probably because it's part of the "for Dummies" series, it has enough technical information in it to be interesting - more than most. It's taped in a studio, so you don't get the breathtaking scenery and the music could be a little more up to date, but, (and here's the big but (really sorry about that pun)) there's nothing annoying about this DVD. Most other DVD's I've rented or purchased have some annoying element that makes it difficult to put back into the machine for the 30th time. Not so with this one. The workouts are challenging enough, the leader is perky - but not too perky, and the Yoga-ish meditation-oriented stuff is not included. I wasn't looking for a meditation guide but for a low impact workout. I am VERY happy with this DVD and will certainly buy it again if this one gets damaged.』

Tamara s Yoga Fusionis not your typical yoga dvd. This 90 minute instructional vinyasa style yoga DVD is a powerful and original yoga practice suited for all levels. Tamara Schreyer, M.A., CYT, from San Diego teaches a creative blend of Power yoga, Ashtanga yoga, and Vinyasa Flow yoga all accompanied by an inspiring array of contemporary music by up-and-coming artists. 『I bought mine from Amazon in 2003 and it is still in amazingly good condition despite frequent use. I don't have any comparison as I've never needed another mat. I'm very pleased with the durability and performance of this product. So far it seems like it will last for a lifetime.』

『I do like the "stickiness" and cushion of this mat, but for the $12.99 I paid 2 years ago and combined for free Super saver shipping it very good, but for nearly 20 bucks it's average and not super impressive. I am 5'3" and find it just right for me.
I use it mostly at home but I took it to a highly regarded and priced class of a local yoga teacher and one of the first comments made to me was how narrow the width of my mat was =-/ Oh, well of course being small I had never really noticed because the mat is AVERAGE, but you may if you are taller and wider. For the current price plus burning fuels to get one I would recommend a local sports shop or general Dept. store.

It also comes with instructions to wash off the residue from manufacturing(?) before use. If you have slipping problems try washing it as described- stick it in the tub with lukewarm water and a good rinsable, mild soap or detergant.』
