『Yoga for Scoliosis features Elise Browning Miller, a yoga instructor who discovered in her 20s that yoga was the only thing which helped to control her scoliosis. Her four background exercisers each have scoliosis as well, and Elise frequently refers to their differing curvatures throughout the practice. I don't have scoliosis myself, but I was interested in trying this video in hopes that it would provide nice stretches for my back.

The main part of the DVD is broken up into three sections. The first is a short introduction (4 minutes) with Elise followed by a brief overview (1 minute) of scoliosis by an orthopedic surgeon. The next section is the 50 minute yoga practice, and the final segment is the bonus materials, including longer interviews with both Elise and the surgeon (4.5 minutes each), and six bonus yoga postures (wall stretch, down dog, shoulder stretch, warrior 1 with wall, chair twist, and 3 part pull) which are performed with props.

The yoga practice itself is broken up into three segments, with Elise providing a short introduction at the start of each segment. The first, Breathing and Spinal Lengthening Poses (16 minutes), focuses on poses to stretch out the spine. It begins with yogic breathing and then moves on to standing side and wall stretches, cat pose, puppy pose, child, down dog, and lunge. The second, Centering and Strengthening Poses (18 minutes), consists mainly of standing postures, including mountain, triangle (performed with a chair), warrior 1&2, and wide-legged forward bend. From a face down position, there are also simple back extensions, cobra, and child's pose. The final segment, Restorative, Releasing, and Relaxing Poses (16 minutes), includes a supported back bend (over a ball or bolster), a side stretch, chair twist, reclined hand to foot pose, revolved stomach pose, and relaxation posture.

Although I don't have scoliosis, I found this to be a nice, relaxing basic yoga practice. However, given Elise's frequent reminders about spinal curvature, the video is most ideally suited to those with scoliosis or other back conditions.』

(Challenging Power Yoga Workout!)
『This is a challenging power yoga workout. Baron warms you up with a long standing forward bend. Then you jump right into a series of upward and downward facing dog poses which will quickly raise your heart rate and warm you right up. Later you move into some other challenging poses like the eagle pose, tree pose, camel, and crescent moon. Baron's cueing is very good. He walks you through the poses and always reminds you to only go as far as you can go. The only pose I could not do at all was the backward bend where you go all the way back and only have your hands and feet touching the floor. The workout ends with floorwork (but you still won't get a break until you reach the final relaxation pose). The cobra pose is included in this section to work your back, and a slow motion bicycle exercise works your obliques. This workout moves quickly. It requires a lot of balance, and you will feel your leg muscles working throughout the workout. Many of the poses incorporate lunges, squats, and balancing on one leg. I definitely think that this video will increase both your strength and your flexibility. This video was originally produced in 1998, and it does not have the highest production quality (the picture is not as crisp or clear as it could be). The only other minor detail that I did not like was the fact that everyone was wearing white, I prefer a little color or a more exciting background. Other than that I think this is a great workout for intermediate/advanced exercisers.』

『This is a good challenging workout, but a little fast-paced, and not always sufficienttly explained.
The balancing series was a particular problem, and could have been slowed down to help explain the moves and improve your concentration.
The students in the tape were also falling down. Not surprisingly from viewing his other tapes, he would use these episodes as an opportunity to touch them in areas generally considered a bit personal (which may be the reason that they all looked so tense).

And, (although I know reviewers aren't supposed to get personal) does his really need that silly get-up he's wearing on his head?

He could also drop the yogababble to make time for some practical information on beginner's modifications of the more difficult positions, so that people don't get hurt.』

『First of all - thank you to the reviewer who wrote a review for Power yoga 3 - that's what made me finally buy this - once she didn't say it was blurred! To everyone out there who thinks these tapes are blurred and are bad quality - ie who read the same article I did on another site - yes, it's a Goodtime tape, but no, it's not blurred at all. The quality is just fine!

Now - workout. Phew. this must be his toughest, it'/s definitely his longest. At just under 70 minutes it's longer than soul of strength at about 53 mins and Power and PRecision at about 63 including breathing exercises. 46 minutes standing poses followed by 18 minutes floor poses. Intense. After the usual sunsalutation A and B opener - which seems to go for ever - he goes on to warriors, side angles and so on - and intersperes sun salutes in between. It never lets up. Definitely more intense than Soul of Strength - also has some different asanas - like sideways stretch, lots of standing backbends, a tiptoes pose I found quite challenging and so on.

In a way i understand the reviewer on another website who said she prefers his newer series - He is smoother, in a good way - his whole attitude is more relaxed, more philosophical perhaps - the music is MUCH better - and even though his new series is tough, the feel is more relaxed - overall (plus I love those lunge prayer twists which are not in this video). Although that sounds wierd, because it is a tough tape. However this is fabulous to alternate with - for days with more stamina - and is more challenging, and a satisfaction when you finish!』

『This is my favorite workout in my third trimester. It keeps me feeling good. I attribute this workout and the others I do to the reason I am still so mobile and able to do things almost like I usually do. It completely loosens everything up. Say goodbye to backaches and all those other pregnancy aches. I really like the prenatal modification for sun salutations, it is much more effective than the versions on my other workouts. This is a little slow for first and second tri if you usually exercise. If you want a more challenging 1st and 2nd tri workout try Kira Landgolf's Total Body Tone or Erin O'Brian's Prenatal Fitness Fix. I learned the hard way to stick with prenatal workouts in pregnancy, regardless of how good you may feel. I tore a muscle from overdoing (tricked by the relaxin I guess) during a regular workout. It took over a month to heal. I haven't tried the postnatal workout yet, I'll add a review when I get to that point. This DVD was very worth it. Other good prenatal workouts include Shiva Rea's prenatal yoga and Crunch Yoga Mama. They are good quality, I used them during both of my pregnancies. If you are an experienced exerciser, they are really best for third tri. Try the ones I recommended above for the earlier days or just go for brisk walks (Leslie Sansone's walking workouts have been great too!)

『I would have to agree with some of the other reviews, her accent is a little annoying, but it can be overlooked. The poses could be held for a little longer to deepen the stretch more, but overall I really like it. I have not done yoga before, but I am pretty athletic and have really gotten into it. Once you get the poses figured out, she does a great job walking you through them. I don't even need to watch the screen much anymore and I have only done it 4+ times.』

『I used to have the Yoga Journal's Energy Balance videotape, which was fine. Only did not really like the speech about yoga at the end of the yoga workout. This DVD put his speech at the beginning now, which is better. Love Rodney Yee's yoga methods!』

『I didn't see any results, nor did I improve my practice with this DVD. The poses in the second section are fast pace and not easy to follow. The exercise is not aerobic at all. The locations are beautiful and I use some of the poses as stretches after running.』

『I had this particular Rodney Yee program for years on VHS, until it wore out. I was glad to find it on DVD. With over 30 years of practice, it remains my favorite routine. Divided into 5 short mini-routines geared toward different times of day, you can choose which ones fit your need. It is easy and fun enough for beginners, but challenging enough for more advanced practitioners who need a "pick-me-up" during the day.』

(A MORE ADVANCED LEVEL, A CHALLENGE, AND WONDERFUL!)
『I have been into Yoga for several years and am now going to the Intermediate level. This superb Rodney Yee DVD is for one who knows the Yoga positions as this is done with little dialog and one is expected to be very familiar with Yoga. Each session is at a different time of the day. The first 2 sessions are my favorites in the morning and take just about 15 minutes. The 3rd one the Creativity lasts right at 16 Minutes (the longest, most difficult and the very fastest section). The last 2 sessions called Reflection (11 minutes) and Surrender (4 minutes) are my PM favorites. These were done on the DVD at SUNSET and these last 2 sessions, just 15 minutes total are wonderful to do in the PM after dinner and I have found that I am so relaxed and sleep wonderful after I have done these! What I love so much about this DVD is the navigation is so easy and you can choose the section that you wish to work on. This, I give a SUPERB RATING and oh yes, 10 STARS! Bravo!』

(My favorite yoga video)
『This video is one the I use for my daily practice. It's so nice not to hear verbal instruction -- that might be necessary for beginners, or the first few times you use a DVD, but after the 50th time you hear the same old stuff you feel like telling Rodney to "Shut up!" In this DVD, all you hear is the name of the pose -- which would be a disadvantage to absolute beginners.

The first section "Awakening" is similar to the A.M. Yoga, or the "Back Care" section of the Healing tape in this same series. Nice, easy stretches.

The second section "Centering" is a nice flow series of standing poses. It really gives me some much-needed help with balance. You go through the series twice, first doing Tree to the right, then Triangle to the left, and so on through, Side Stretch, Warrior I and II, Half Moon, Warrior III, and Extended Leg Stretch. It's the shortest routine on the DVD, but quite possibly the best.

The third section, "Creativity" is the most difficult, and the one which seems to generate the most complaints. It *is* fast; I think it's intended to be aerobic. The worst part to me is that I simply can't make some of the transitions. It is physically impossible for me to jump from dog pose to standing forward bend, for example, or to go directly from downward dog to Triangle. Dog pose, or the plank-up dog-down dog sequence is used to transition between poses, and quite frankly, I usually just skip this and do the next pose. (Anyone who needs to use the blocks will not be able to keep up otherwise.) Things slow down towards the end, however. I keep trying with this practice, but I skip it more frequently than any of the others on the DVD, and it's the reason I can't give it five stars.

The fourth practice "Reflection" is virtually the opposite of the one before -- nice, slow seated forward bends. You spend quite a long time in each one, and it's very relaxing.

Finally, there's a short four-minute relaxation pose, the only practice where there's any narration. I usually mute it at this point; if you don't, you'll find yourself rudely awakened by Rodney explaining the whole concept behind the Energy practice.

Overall, it's a good everyday practice, and that's how I use it. I add some conscious breathing before I start, and meditation after it's over, and that's my usual yoga practice for the day.』

Yoga Journal's approach to instructional yoga tapes is always innovative, but their hour-longYoga Practice for Energyis truly different. Filmed at the beach on Maui, the sessions Awakening, Centering, Creativity, Reflection, and Surrender offer movements that follow the cycle of the sun through the course of a day. A month ago my yoga teacher suggested I buy a manduka travel-light mat for a firmer support under my feet; ILOVE IT! It is light and easy to carry and most importantly my balance has improved. It is firm but very comfortable! You will not be disappointed.』

『I was torn between this lighter version and the heavier version. I am very pleased with my final choice of the lighter Manduka mat. It is wide enough and thick enough in comparison to your average mat without being too heavy to tote to the gym. It was delivered extremely fast so fast that I checked to make sure I didn't order expedited delivery! Yes, it was VERY stinky and a little slick. I tried washing it in the house but it wasn't helping with the smell. My solution was to leave it outside for about 2 weeks on my porch table. Our winters are mild so it wasn't getting too cold or getting too much sun. I would flip it periodically and wipe it down. We had a few rainy nights that was just perfect to get rid of the residue. After 2 weeks, the smell was gone. I tried once to use it sooner and it was an hour of torture - way too stinky to use. I prefer to use the bottom side of the mat - it has a better grip with the little circles on my hands. I haven't had any problems slipping until just recently when I had an instructor who insisted the room temperature be at about 100!!! I was sweating enough to slip for the first time ever. I had a thin hand towel with me that I placed on the mat under my hands. It was the perfect solution and no more slipping!』

『This is a great machine for a total body workout. I cannot believe how quiet it is and it runs very smoothly. It was quite easy to assemble and did not take too long. The only con I can think of is that they should have put more levels of resistance on it. I am a woman, 5'6'' and weigh about 135 lbs. I can row on the highest resistance, so I think men with more body strength could use more resistance. It was a little pricey, but it is definetly a quality machine compared to some I have tried. Very sturdy and folds up easily. I would recommend it.』

『I bought this because it was both a recumbent bike and a rower. I am very happy with this product because the quality is the best I have had with any fitness equipment I own. It is so quiet and sturdy and easy to use. I can go from bike to rower in seconds, making it easy to rotate every couple of miles if desired.
The extra bonus is that you can use it for strength training by just pulling the resistant bar while standing. And a few other options are shown in the book that comes with it.
I would recommend this product for the quality and ease of use. Easy to fold up if needed.』

『I ordered the Stamina Deluxe Conversion II, knowing that it would be an excellent addition to my home gym. After assembling it, I saw that the tension knob and the spring pin knob were cracked, making it impossible to use w/o taping it together (which I did, just to see how the unit worked). I liked the unit, but it was ridiculous to pay that much for something in order to "tape it together" so I contacted Stamina and they would not return my calls or e-mails. Amazon (from whom I had purchased it) graciously replaced it with a new one.
When the new one arrived, I examined it thoroughly before the delivery person left. After assembling it, I started to work out and there was such a loud squeaking noise, it was impossible to use. I persevered, thinking that there was something that "needed to be worked out" but it got worse. Once again, Stamina would not return e-mails or voicemails, so Amazon (thank goodness I had bought it from them) allowed me to return it (their policy is to not provide a third replacement).
So, this leads me to believe that Stamina would not accept calls (only voicemail) and would not reply to my e-mails because they know that they are manufacturing an inferior product.』

If you are looking for calming guitar music I suggest Guitar Meditations by Soulfood and Billy McLaughlin.』

『I teach yoga so I am always looking for cds. I admit I purchased this cause it was inexpensive. I did listen to samples and liked the classical music. I thought this type of music would be general enough for the not-so-serious or new to yoga. The cd turned out to be a flop because the music does not flow one to another and the loudness changes from one song to another. Terrible for a class as I found myself wondering what happened to the music. I suppose this cd would be okay if you don't want to spend alot of money and just want some background music in your home but not for yoga practice.』
