IPhone 3G used's review (Best Kundalini disc I own) 『Thank God this made it to DVD, I've already worn out two VHS tapes. I was fortunate enough to take classes with Carol in NYC before she moved to the wilds of northern Minnesota (my wife and I were really bummed). She and Ravi Singh were the best teachers we ever had (I own a bunch of Ravi's discs too but Carol's is my overall favorite). You don't have to be terribly experienced at yoga to enjoy this set, though it helps to be in reasonably good shape. It really puts you through your paces and leaves you feeling relaxed and energized. For me it is the perfect workout and I can't recommend it enough.』
(Not bad, music is a bit boring) 『I actaully enjoyed this DVD overall. I liked Kundalini yoga A Journey through the Chakras W/Ravi Singh better. They both had many of the same poses&many uses of breath of fire for many of them. The music worked much better, faster in Ravi Singh. I did feel good doing this dvd&as it progressed I did feel more energy. Her voice feels a little stiff&it's just her alone w/blank white background. It didn't have a wrmup&got right to it, but I as able to keep up&didn't get bored or want to turn it off though I get bored easily.』
(Great practice (and what strange reviews!)) 『I read these reviews and was initially turned off. However, my library had this available, so I thought I had nothing to lose and gave it a try. It's excellent. I taught vinyasa yoga for a few years, but I don't consider myself an expert- and certainly not on Kundalini. However, by the end of the practice I felt clear and happy, and the effect lasted well into the next day. The instructor is not, as others have pointed out, overflowing with effusive joy, but she is still inspirational and expert in guiding what I would consider to be a high beginner kundalini practice.
I've got to say, I think other reviewers overreacted to some of the kriyas used here. When I read "she starts with a full backbend", I was a little nervous. However, I don't think that's accurate. She starts with what others call "tabletop", not "wheel". I think your shoulders might complain more than your back, but I had no problems.
I also think that the concept of "flow" isn't appropriate for a Kundalini practice. This isn't vinyasa or in the lineage of Iyengar, Ashtanga or Viniyoga, for which that might be a more pertinent criticism. Kundalini, from what I have seen thus far, is aimed at releasing energy usually located at the base of the spine all the way up to the crown of the head and throughout the body. There is then perhaps a "flow" of energy, but not necessarily physical movement. Most of the practices I've seen usually start with movements aimed at opening up the chakras or energy centers from the base of the spine up to the crown of the head, perhaps starting first with spinal warmups. This practice was no exception, although she doesn't discuss the chakras at all.
This practice has quite a bit of abdominal work (though not of the "crunch" style), some of which may be too intense for absolute beginners, including the Kundalini staple Stretch pose, as well as a bicycle and inner thigh stretch/kriya. Even with a regular yoga and Pilates practice, my abs were still talking to me for the rest of the day- but I liked it. I also liked that even though there were several "stretchy" positions that utilized long holds, it wasn't as demanding of perfection as some other styles of yoga. Finally, I thoroughly enjoyed the relatively long rests between postures, as well as the guided meditations, relaxations and chants.
I think this practice can give physical "results" as far as weightloss and appearance, but if you're just here for the physical, you might find the other trappings off-putting.』
(It's a treasure!) 『This is beautiful, energizing and centering yoga. The benefits include a real work-out integrated with deep relaxation and meditation. It leaves you with an afterglow of tranquility, energy and vitality. Although I have invested in plenty of other yoga DVDs, I find that I keep coming back to this one time and again, as it feels like deep nourishment on both a physical and spiritual level. I highly recommend it to all. Many heartfelt thanks to Carol, for creating such a deeply moving program, and then sharing it with the world!』
(An Engimatic, Beautiful,&Inspiring Workout) 『Anyone who thinks this workout is disjointed clearly is not meditating while moving through this kriya. First, it's time to shed some light on what this type of kundalini sequence actually is. This is definately a Yogi Bhajan sequence. Bhajan created several kriyas with similar names - "Grace&Prosperity," "Flexibility&the Spine," for example. "Grace&Strength" is a fusion workout existing in an interzone between the original "Warrior Workout" and "Flexibility&the Spine." Like the "Warrior Workout," there is a running segment, frog pose, and several back bends like bow. Like the flexibilty or spinal kriyas, there are cobra, seated wide angle forward bends, wheel, crow squats, and standing back/forward bends. Carol is showing you exactly how this kriya would have been taught by Yogi Bhajan. Anyone who has ever done Ravi Singh's and Ana Brett's "Ultimate Stretch Workout" can see obvious similarities to this set. The difference is that it has a more rapid motion, contains an aerobic component, a segment designed for the heart chakra, and a rather complex abdominal sequence in the middle of the set. I personally think Carol magnificently explains breath of fire, what real strength is, and concludes her set with a beautifully inspired resting pose dialogue. As she says, this set is to improve your strength, not prove your strength. I have spent years doing power yoga, ashtanga, and kundalini. This segment, in a similar mode to Donna Davidge, works on the body and the mind throughout the day after performing it in the morning. Also, those hatha yoga critics who claim it is unsafe to begin in table top (truly one of the less difficult asanas) need to understand that before doing any intermediate kundalini sequence, one should already be warmed up. Before I do this or any kundalini set, I perform the Five Tibetan Rites. After doing any rigorous segment, Carol gives you more than ample time to consolidate your gains through a moment of still meditation. Realize, if you are doing yoga simply to de-stress through deep breathing, kundalini yoga is less appropriate than hatha, ashtanga, or power yoga variations. If you are doing this to actually raise kundalini, work the lymphatic, nervous systems, and increase the internal will linking the body and mind together, this is the type of yoga to do. Upon finishing this workout, even though it is made up of an anti-intuitive sequence, I feel active, strong, defined, and just as ready to take action in my day as I would if I did power yoga. Often, power yoga can make me feel too heavy or weighted down from too many held poses. I like how this unusual sequence jump starts my heart after running/skipping in place, making me feel extremely light on my feet. I also think her return to child's pose and her instructions on how to round up, using your abdominal muscles makes transitioning between meditating and action extremely fluid. Those who have criticized this DVD should take a look at a kundalini book and understand the wide variety of sequences Bhajan created before displaying their obvious lack of knowledge to the world. Carol Carlson didn't make this DVD for shock value, fame, or bedazzlement. It is clear that she expresses a true, deep felt love of kundalini and a true urge to give you, the viewer, a true kundalini experience.』 『Kundalini is a Hindu word that refers to energy that lies dormant in the spine until it is awakened and channeled upward through the chakras in the process of spiritual perfection. Yoga practitioners unfamiliar with kundalini may find Carol Carlson's 70-minute video a bit daunting, as it combines fairly energetic exercises with the "breath of fire": short, quick breaths pulsed by the diaphragm through the nose. Carlson uses a meditation mantra and a breath mantra as she moves through a series of stretches and strengthening postures.Kundalini Yoga with Grace and Strengthis undoubtedly a good resource for experienced practitioners, but since it is a little short on instruction and explanation, it is recommended for intermediate-level students and above. People who enjoy the postures and practices of Iyengar yoga might do better with theYoga Journal's series.--Jhana Bach』

IPhone 3G used's review (Good but not what I was looking for) 『I really like sara Ivanhoe so I bought this after I'd been doing her hips and thighs video. This one is alright but I get the same exersizes on my pilates dvd I wanted more yoga moves. It's still a good workout but I like her others better.』
(A challenging yoga practice for strengthening your core) 『In this 20 minute video, instructor Sara Ivanhoe leads a challenging yoga practice aimed at strengthening your core abdominal muscles. She begins with standing side bends, adding a twist with a knee lift. Next comes some additional seated stretches with forward bends, twists, and spine rolls. Sara then moves to an all-fours position and leads some particularly challenging work moving from down dog to plank pose with one leg pulled in towards your chest. This is followed by some additional seated twists, including a twisting boat pose. Lying on your back, you'll then perform Pilates-like abs moves such as criss-cross, bicycle, and stretches with both bent and straight legs. You'll also perform a half sit up with the legs both bent and stright as well as side knee drops with the legs both bent and straight.
Although the box for this video says that it is "designed for all abilities," this is a tough, challening practice which is likely to feel overwhelming for beginners. The practice is best suited to those with some level of prior yoga experience as well as some pre-existing core strength. Overall, if you like Sara, have done yoga before, and want to focus more on your core, you are likely to enjoy this video.』

She does basic exercises that most dance, etc. use as warm up&she then proceeds to take a 5-7 min warm up&turn it into 22 min. This is best for those who are totally out of shape or can't exercise. Otherwise save your money. The production quality is great&I do agree if she has that big a chest (hey she was born lucky), she shouldn't be wearing such a low-cut tank shirt&the bikini on the beach scene... it must be for the men.
I'd write what's in it, but I don't have to since you can see almost the whole thing on youtube. 』
(This DVD is a total stress buster!) 『These 7 routines are simple yet highly effective in reducing stress. I can literally feel the tension melting away when I do these stretches. I feel much more balanced in general. The DVD is a must purchase for anyone who just wants to feel better!!』
(Eye candy for the guys, but didn't work for me...) 『I had trouble taking this routine seriously. First off Michelle LeMay starts by talking about yoga, laying forward with her large chest in plain view. Then in the routines it seems to be all about her and how she looks, including yoga on the beach in a skimpy bikini.
In addition, I think the DVD quality is poor. When played on my DVD player it broke up (like the cheap ones do). I had also purchased one of LeMay's other DVDs and it wouldn't even play. I sent my copy back to Amazon.』
(Just what the doctor ordered!) 『I've been doing yoga and Pilates for years and working out regularly for a while. While I enjoy "powerful", strong yoga or intense stretching, sometimes I want to stretch just to feel good, not to "progress". This 25 minute DVD, divided into seven sections, easily fills that requirement.
It starts out with a soothing roll down, first to the center, then to the sides, then back to the center. Next section focuses on the hips, with some forward rolls and twists, and then we move onto a neck stretch. Afterwards is a hip opener that finds you on your back and slowly rolling through your hips. Back to seated for some forward bends, then standing again to work more deeply into rotating your back, and then finally lying down to work on your breathing for a brief relaxation. Each section has one or two exercises, but they are down slowly, so the two to four minutes you spend on each is well-spent. You can do them all for one 25 minute relaxation, or you can do them in pieces. 4 out of 7 can be done seated, so most people should be able to get some relief.
This stretched out my back and neck when it was spasming, and overall made me feel very peaceful. Highly recommended.』 『" This DVD includes 7 different routines - less than 5 minutes each. IPhone 3G used's review (Favorite Yoga Tape) 『I LOVE THIS YOGA TAPE. I was the first yoga tape I ever used and is still my favorite, nothing I have found has measured up to this tape. While it does take a few times to get the movements down and some of the positions are harder it gives you something to work towards and after a few weeks I could just listen to the tape and no longer have to watch. I can't say it enough how much I love this tape, in fact I am trying to find it on DVD because my VCR no longer works and I can not find anything that has lived up to this yoga tape so far.』
(good but not great) 『I agree with some of the other reviews. I consider myself a yoga beginner but I've been doing yoga for a couple of months before I got this tape. I knew some of the poses and had seen pictures of others but never attempted them. I think some understanding of yoga is required for this tape because of the speed of the routine. Sometimes it goes too fast from one pose to the next without explaining the pose in detail. I'm glad I bought this tape used.』
(INVIGORATING...A GREAT FOR ADVANCED BEG. OR INTERMED) 『Before I got this video I read these reviews. I was spurred on by the undertone of vigorousness in some of the reviews. I am not a beginner in terms of physical activities so that yoga presented here is not a first timer kind of challenge. Though not unaware of what the less thrilled reviews had to say. I got the tape and the first time I worked along with it to see how I like it...I give this video a 4 stars rating!. I find it invigorating and a challenge because I know how to deal with it I think. It has a lot of good poses/combination of, to offer and in a niffy 20 minutes as well. I am very glad I lessened to what turned out to be my better judgement. Contrastly, here are the problems:
1) "Beginners": The word "Beginner" is a BIG mislead. Probably used for promotional/commercial sell to that "market". It is overall a good workout...for ADVANCED BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE. If you look at the back of the video cover you will see "Dancer" pose which may not be considered beginner as such but may not be enough of a hinter at the deception.
2) The hold of the poses: While she is trying to do "POWER YOGA" and thats fine, there must have a decent moment where you finish the pose completely. Its like a dancer who does a beautiful jump and just comes out of it not holding it to establish the move, so that its unfinished, not fulfilled visually nor physically. This is what makes it seems so "fast" and "quick". She does not hold some of he poses to a basic finality and benefit, thus the cutting it off for the next pose. This is disconsorting even for advanced beginners/intermediates at first.
3) The poses themselves: Issues of abilitiy, flexibility, mobility, alingment are things not taken into account at this level of a tape it is assumed or presumed which is why I say its better as a advanced beginner/intermediate. When she does the pose where you raise your leg behind up in the air face downward hands on the floor. She needs to hold this pose a bit. You might as well kick the leg up and back down that as much time as you get with her. In general, though I love that pose and am able to get a good stretch by adding my own alterations; head to knee with leg up. For a beginners to maneuver this kind of thing is hard especially if they follow her just timing. In some instances even she a little too jump the gun for herself. I try to complete a pose even if I am a smig behind her pace its fine. Also for me she trys to get in a too much instruction in places where she could say less and allow the pose to be experienced and not to be held static in the meantime. The music is the same as the Rodney Yee yoga..which is a great plus for me, its produced by the same people/Living Arts. But I found my tape music too low and her voice overriding it. As always with these kind of videos you have to take into account any back, knee, etc issues you have.
On the upside I can see why some people really did like it. For one they are probably NOT beginners! and know how to speed up while getting the most out of the pose or know how to alternate what they want without skipping too much of a beat. There is that "yoga gentle feel"; the background, colors, her voice, and the music which does its part in creating a relaxed peace. Although I think downward dog is overdone, I like the poses combinations. I am familiar with the Rodney Yee yoga sessions so that her pose combinations add more variety for the while. What Susan Deason in this tape DOES OFFER for the NON-BEGINNER is the chance/challenge (by your own patience, observation, trial and error..she helps only in that she has presented the challenge) to learn to move yoga gracefully, vigourously, yet throughly.. not only necessary and downright triumphant in this case, but in general.』
(more like "Intermediate" !) 『These yoga exercises are so fast moving that one would have to just watch the video 2 or 3 times to get a handle on what is going on before being able to do all the poses with any expertise. I also found the moves done so quickly that I wasn't able to get my mind at the level of serenity I enjoy when doing yoga. Some of the poses are very difficult, and even Suzanne Deason looks a little wobbly in one of the "Triangle" variations, so you know it must be hard, because Deason is like a cross between stretchy elastic and strong iron.
There is a cautionary notice at the beginning that says "not all exercises are suitable for everyone", and that might include anyone with creaky knees, for doing the lunges for instance, and those little "jump" movements Deason does with ease. If you are in marvelous condition, and like your yoga done in sequences that move like a rapidly flowing stream, you will like this tape, and I'm sure it will develop the strength and flexibility it claims to produce. Beginners should not purchase this tape...it will be very discouraging, and there will be few poses that they will be able to do with confidence and competence.
I'm giving this a lower rating for being what I consider mislabeled; with my knees, I would never attempt yoga beyond the beginner level, and would not have bought this had it been labeled Intermediate, which it is, at the very least. The scenery is marvelous, of a volcanic landscape of Maui, and the end of the tape includes "modifications" to make the poses easier, by using a block or strap to make the stretches less of a stretch, but I can't imagine how one would deal with the accessories considering the poses are done so quickly. 』
(Good video but not for beginners) 『This a good tape, but I do not think it should be labeled as for beginners. Her poses require flexibility that a beginner just will not have yet developed.
Also, unlike other beginners videos, the instructor does not offer visual modifications to the poses for those not flexible enough to perform the poses as shown. Perhaps most importantly, she does not verbally address the fact that it's ok to not be this flexible as a beginner and that one should go at one's own pace.
I found this video very frustrating and not at all nurturing.』
『Lower Body Yogais a great supplement to any at-home fitness program. It's brief, it's fun, and it feels good. Suzanne Deason's program invigorates and stretches the lower body in a series of flowing postures, working to stretch, tone, and challenge one's muscles and balance. Deason bravely works through her routine from a cliff top at the Haleakala volcano in Hawaii, but this merely provides a scenic backdrop for a fast-moving yoga routine that otherwise requires attentive concentration on the part of the viewer. Exercises cover the abdominal, buttock, and hip areas, in quick-paced, challenging movements. One might be inclined to pause the tape to extend a stretch for a few seconds more because it feels so good, but overall, the routine presented delivers on its promise of thorough invigoration with brevity.--Gilia Angell』

The narration is twice as fast as I can actually do the poses and the narrator isn't actually doing them. The poses have been over-rehearsed and are too fast to follow. The music covers up the narrator part of the time. I have arthritis and other pain so I can't do the poses at breakneck speed. I'm giving my copy to a charity yard sale.』
(Amazing!) 『This is an amazing video for anyone, but especially for people with chronic pain, who cannot exercise normally. I highly recommend it - it is very soothing and the backdrop of the ocean and mountains is beautiful! Charles and Lisa Matkin lovingly teach you the basics of using yoga for pain relief and it has truly helped me.』
(An Excellent beginning DVD for those who 'hurt') 『This DVD perfectly meets my desire for a guided program of yoga that addresses specific aches, pains and 'hurts'. The poses are adaptive, so that almost anyone can do them, but more challenging alternatives are offered as your flexibility improves. It's gentle, but you know you have used your body. I especially like the use of chairs to adapt, prop up or extend your reach.
I don't guarantee that you'll just spring up from your first session and be healed forever. In fact, as I crawled off my mat, I wondered if I'd be able to stand up! But within :30 or so, my body felt more relaxed and flexible. Within a week, I was feeling much better where it hurt- the lower back. I alternate this now with Dr. Lamm's 'Tai Chi for Arthritis' and feel that they compliment each other nicely. By taking it easy and working gradually into the routine, you can gain flexibility, better posture and yes, more painlessness.』
(Excellent to get started or get well) 『I love this DVD. The yoga is gentle, controlled and focuses on breathing and proper technique for healing the body. (My favorite yoga DVD by far!) 『I have become a huge fan of yoga and attend classes as well as use DVDs at home. I bought over 10 yoga DVDs, returned some, kept some, and this one is my absolute favorite! I keep going back to it - from her soothing voice, to the easy instructions, gorgeous setting by the ocean, and music (there are some mighty cheesy DVDs out there with a bath rug as a mat, awful annoying clangy music, hyper talky instructors), it's a must have.
I'd start out with easy beginners yoga first to gain some basics - live classes are the best for this. Then get into this DVD and as in any yoga practice, use it at your own pace, practice with your own pace. It's a lifelong practice so don't expect to be all bendy and flexible as the instructors. It's perfectly fine! I'm buying her new one, that's for sure. Maria』
(Excellent practice for beginners with some knowledge of poses and alignment) 『I was pleasantly surprised by this DVD. Based on some of the reviews I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. It's a mildly challenging workout with a good vinayasa sequence and focuses on lots of hip opening poses. Beginners should just go at their own pace. For example, I've been doing Yoga for about three months now and Chaturranga is still a very challenging pose for me. I still have to do the modified version with knees on the floor. Nearly all beginner video's show it in the unmodified form but I just go at my pace and remember that someday I will be able to do the full version.
There are two poses that I found difficult, one was a variation on the pigeon pose and the other a deep hip opening lunge variation. The pigeon pose was especially challenging but if you go at your own pace, don't sink down to the floor but stay up on your arms and rest if you need to, it's accessible to even beginners. I found that by conciously relaxing and using my breath I was able to get my elbows to the floor the first time I tried it. The lunge variation was easier although more awkward at first. I had to repeat it several times in a row before I felt comfortable with it. It really does make your hips feel great and challenges your balance with the side twist.
The rest of the video is done at a challenging pace but still good for beginners and the poses are pretty basic. I've done this video three times now and I have a feeling it will continue to be one of my favorites. It's got beautiful scenery, a nice combination of poses, and the instructor is great. I highly recommend it.』
(Great and simple) 『I'm surprised at the number of people who say this DVD is for advanced people. I've found it very easy from the start. Elena Brower has a very relaxing voice and spends a nice lengthy amount of time on breathing. The scenery and music is beautiful and I love her little spoken "gems" here and there (Honor your effort of coming to your practice today).
