『I was a little let down by this CD. I am a fan of other things Stephen Cope has done and was expecting to be really excited by this. But there is nothing new here and it seems much more surface level than his other works (perhaps it is the spoken vs. written, but I find people like Pema Chodrun and Jack Kornfield very compelling on audio). This would make a nice introduction for someone who really has not spent much time on yoga/meditation, but is probably not for people who have read Cope's work.』

『This set consists of two CDs. The first CD provides a simplified introduction to yoga thought and covers concepts such as duality, interdependence and the distinction between feeling an emotion and acting out. It also talks about the development of witness consciousness, introduces the concept of an energy body and talks about how this is related to working with emotions. The first CD also briefly discusses yoga as a physical practice and an overall life philosophy. It's a good introduction for those who know very little about yoga, but have some real curiosity about the very basic concepts.

The second CD is where the real value of this set comes in. Disc TWO begins with an exercise called the daily body scan which puts one in touch with the sensations that are occurring in the body. Since emotions are related to what is occurring in the body and awareness of changes in these sensations, the overall effect is to heighten awareness of emotions as they are expressed or held in the body.

The second exercise on this CD talks about riding an emotion as a surfer would ride a wave. It builds on exercise 1 and helps the individual to disidentify with their emotion it while fully feeling it. This causes a felt shift and perhaps a healing transformation. This often happens in therapy, so this is not exactly a foreign concept.

I particularly like the third exercise on this CD which you do before you fall asleep. It is similar to exercise 2, but it brings in the events of the day and has a very relaxing phase that quiets the nervous system through deep and relaxed breathing. Physiologically, by extending the exhalation by relaxing the abdomen and avoiding chest breathing, the parasympathetic branch (calming) of the nervous system is activated. If you don't like deep explanations, then all I can say is it will help you with problems with insomnia.

If you are interested in working with emotions in this way and would like to read further, I suggest THE POWER OF FOCUSING and/or FOCUSING and Tara Bennet-Goleman's excellent book EMOTIONAL ALCHEMY. For a truly great and comprehensive introduction to yoga, I highly recommend THE YOGA TRADITION by Georg Feurenstein. If I could rate this book a 6 I would and it is a tremendous bargain at under $30.00.』

『TONY SANCHEZ, FOUNDING director of the United States Yoga Association and the San Francisco Yoga Studio, is the creator of a system called Yoga Challenge, based on the 84 classic asanas taught at Ghosh's College of Physical Education in Calcutta, India, where Sanchez was certified in 1979. (The college was established in 1923 by Bishnu Ghosh and his brother Paramahansa Yogananda, founder of the Self-Realization Fellowship.) This video is the fourth in a seris of increasingly vigorous asana practice sessions. Just over two and a half hours long, it consists of 144 asanas (including variations) divided into 21 series, varying in number of asanas each from just a few to more than 10. There are also two short pranayama sessions, one at the beginning and one at the end of the asana series.

Each series is organized around an asana or theme, such as Half Moon, Eagle, or Lotus Pose (the latter is by far the longest in the session), or a "stretching" sequence that includes forward bends and backward bends. In general, the asanas in each series progress from less difficult to more difficult, though overall, this is definitely a practice session for advanced students with lots of time on their hands. Even if you think you're advanced, you probably should consider beginning your study of this system with one of the earlier videos.

Sanchez trained with Bikram Choudhury (who himself studied with Ghosh), founder of Bikram Yoga, and Bikram's fingerprints are evident in the content, terminology, and sequencing of the Yoga Challenge system. Sanchez has a no nonsense approach to the practice. His instructions are fairly basic, but his modeling of the asanas is quite impressive, especially considering the demands many of them make on both strength and flexibility. I've seen teachers balance upside down on one arm before, but never with quite as much assurance as Sanchez. Although the practice itself is for advanced students, Sanchez's extraordinary demonstration of asana will serve as an inspiration for students of all levels.』

『I am a certified yoga teacher, have taught yin yoga for two years, and been familiar with Paul Grilley's work for quite some time. Allow me to let you in a secret - yin yoga is simply holding standard yoga postures longer (2-5 minutes) and trying to relax the muscles during the poses. There is nothing complicated about a yin practice, and it is particularly useful for beginners, the chronically ill, seniors, and anyone wanting or needing to have the time during a yoga practice to go deeply inward. Grilley has renamed traditional hatha yoga postures (for example he calls pigeon "swan pose") so there aren't any new postures to learn. It is the way of practicing these postures that is unique.

I tend to dislike the packaging and branding of yoga "styles" as a commercial endeavor, however Yin Yoga: The Foundations of a Quiet Practice is extremely well done and worth owning. One strength of the DVD is Grilley's detailed explanation of anatomy and theory. He explains how yin yoga affects fascia and connective tissue and why practicing yoga this way can be so transformative to the body and mind. The DVD serves not only as a practice tool, but as a source of education about the role of connective tissue and fascia in the body. Grilley has brought the philosophy behind cranial sacral massage to yoga. The results are transformative.

The second strength of the DVD is the well thought out organizational format. The DVD contains a stand alone lecture for background information. The individual yin practices are broken into categories, such as hip openers, and there are also three yang sequences. What is particularly ingenious is that the viewer has two narration choices for the sequences. You can choose detailed narration with explanations and anatomical cues, or you can choose to have a more quiet practice with minimal narration. Grilley is very skilled at narrating, and his cues and explanations are informative without being distracting. I appreciate his emphasis on the individuality of a person's practice and that yoga is about making a pose your own. Viewers learn that yoga is not about exactly imitating the teacher or following some preconceived notion of what a posture should look like. With that approach towards yoga, he uses the models in the DVD to show how people experience poses differently. For example he compares a very flexible model to a stiffer one, showing how in pigeon the very limber person achieves a spine stretch, while the stiffer person experiences primarily a hip stretch. Do not heed other reviewers' criticism of this DVD as being inappropriate for beginners or seniors. Grilley uses models with a range of flexibility, however the DVD could have been stronger if he used one model that needed the aid of props for certain poses. His overall message of making a yoga pose work for your individual body will make even a stiff beginner feel comfortable trying a yin yoga practice. Lastly, there are several bonus routines that feature only a still picture of the pose, and timed prompts to move onto the next posture. This section is great for someone who knows the postures already, and is seeking minimal guidance through a routine. This section really allows you to go deeply inward in silence. You get a lot of bang for your buck with this DVD. Grilley's lecture is similar to the $150-200 he charges for a workshop, and the multitude of practice choices on the DVD will keep you challenged for a long time.

『I have studied many styles of yoga, and Yin is one of my favorites, but you need to have this master DVD to really understand the full implications of the practice and how to do it. Yin gets to the core of connective tissue and holds each stretch for several minutes, allowing full stretching and relaxation of the muscles and tissue. It works along various meridians, and I could not live without doing this at least twice a week. This DVD is great because one disk is a full explanation of the practice and the other is a series of one hour, 30 minute, and even shorter practices, with and without verbal instruction and music, so you can choose what you want to do, and it provides options for stretches that are too challenging or too simple. A wonderful DVD.』

『This is my favorite DVD right now. I just love it.

What I appreciate most about this DVD is the way in which Seane focuses on alignment and breathing in the vinyasa. I also found, for a beginner, that her explanations were very helpful and I notice something new about them every time I use the DVD. I also the way she builds up her "Sun Salutes...to their kind of completion" (as she puts it) piece by piece--I've found Sun Salutes kind of dizzying, so slowly assembling them bit by bit was very helpful. I appreciate very much how much she focuses on alignment. I find she hits a very happy medium for me between hyperactive ashtanga flows (hard for a beginner to jump into...) and the often slow pace of Iyengar beginners classes.

As someone who deals with anxiety issues, I found her discussion in the interview about yoga and her OCD to be very interesting and inspiring.』

『My husband and I love this DVD and use it often to bring in the new day. We are very active and it feels like this DVD helps with all of our other sports which occur in hilly, challenging terrain. My usual pet peave with instructional dvds regarding lack of breathing and form instructions do not apply here because Corn explains all this in great detail while performing the movements. I appreciate this since you can cancel benefits of any practice/workout with improper breathing and movements. It is long but the chapters are arranged nicely; we usually break it into two segments, around 30 min ea(alternating days). There is also a full session without the instructions (we haven't used that yet since we still benefit from the instructions).』

『I had read other reviews and thought I would give Seane Corn a try. Now, I'm wondering what to do with this video that I spent money on...? This video is fine for beginners that do not have any yoga experience. This is a two DVD set. First: The step by step instruction is very helpful for beginners, but for those who know and enjoy the poses, her voice and constant talking gets overwhelming. Your body feels good after, but there is nothing stimulating for the spirit, which leaves one NOT in a state of peace and harmony. It's not nearly as sturdy as it looks, and as another reviewer pointed out, it has a very strong smell. Mine arrived with a stain on it, as though something had been spilled and not cleaned up properly. Customer service was very helpful in refunding my money, but that didn't the product itself any better.』
